Here is the fourteenth chapter in this series released in keeping with my self-imposed upload schedule for this series. It's been a while since we checked in on Class B and while their Grimm Studies lesson was probably not as noteworthy as Class A's they did have their battle trial during said Grimm Studies lesson so let's see how that went for them. That is all the administrative stuff I have and while there are no questions that need answers or guest reviews that need responding to so I will leave this off here. Do keep the reviews and PMs coming as I always like hearing how much y'all are enjoying my work. Anyway, that is it for this pre-chapter note which means that it is time to sit back and enjoy the fourteenth chapter in Black RWBY Academia.
Disclaimer: I own nothing related to these three great franchises.
Chapter 14: Class B's Battle Trial
"I am here coming into the classroom like a hero!" All Might said as he threw open the door and leaned into the classroom in full costume just as he'd done the day before with Class 1-A and like the day before he was in his Silver Age costume and not his current Golden Age one. "And it's time for your first lesson in standard Hero Basic Training!"
The students of Class 1-B looked to All Might as he walked into the classroom and headed to the lectern there with anticipation for what the class would entail. Some of them were muttering at the retro outfit All Might had on or were fanboying a little at what they saw, especially those who realized that the number 1 pro was wearing his Silver Age costume, but Yuno just looked at the top pro with a calm gaze.
The pro he admired the most was the Wizard King as that was the position which he was aiming for, but he understood that All Might was on the same level as the Wizard King in terms of strength and respect, if not above him. As such Yuno intended to learn what he could from the man though he wasn't going to gush over him like some of his classmates were doing.
It was after lunch on their second full day at U.A. and that meant that at long last it was time to start the standard hero basic training program that many of them had come to U.A. for. The day before, during this time slot, they'd had their first class dealing with the alternative paths a hero could take in a Grimm Studies lecture from Professor Port which had been rather dull to Yuno though he had watched Pine comfortably handle the Boarbatusk Grimm that the professor had brought into class for a demonstration on how to take down a Grimm.
That had been the only interesting part of the lecture due to the professor's constant off topic ramblings. Yuno was sure that his stars could handle Grimm but he wasn't arrogant enough to believe he could do it without training so he had watched closely how Pine had done it and had been impressed by how he'd handled it with only using his Quirk to supplement his own speed and mobility while defeating it with his weapon. It had been an educational experience for Yuno and he'd learned a lot about how a Huntsman acted, a branch he wasn't familiar with at all.
The biggest surprise had been the weapon aspect. Asta had told him that Huntsmen and Huntresses carried weapons because in his entrance exam where he worked with a Huntress called Weiss Schnee, as well as a strange girl called Nero, to beat the zero pointer as she'd carried a sword though apparently it was of a different style to Asta's own sword so he didn't know how much he could learn from her fighting style.
That had intrigued Yuno, but he'd not seen it himself until Pine had pulled what looked like some strange silver handle thing off his belt which had a lever on it and gears in one end while the other had some orb thing set into it. He had then pressed the lever down and a black cane shot out of it which Pine then used as if it was a sword to parry the Boarbatusk's tusks while keeping his Quirk active around his body to match the Boarbatusk for strength and speed.
Pine then kept it up until he got an opening to smack it in the head with his cane hard enough to drive it to its knees and then leap over it the thrust the end of the cane into its back with such precision that he hit it in a gap of its armor. Add in the boost to his strength that Pine's Quirk gave him, and the blow caused more than enough damage to end the Boarbatusk.
It had been a surprise to the class while Professor Port had praised Pine's work, while also adding a running commentary on the battle during it, and explained that he'd won by overloading the beast with internal damage, a common strategy for the few who used cane or shockwave-based weapons. That had led Mimosa to asking about other weapons which got the professor on a tangent about his own weapon, a strange axe and blunderbuss hybrid he called Blowhard that made no practical sense to Yuno, and how each weapon was forged by the Huntsman or Huntress to fit their own personal styles.
From there it devolved so Yuno just ignored the story of how Blowhard got its name, which apparently didn't come from its creator being a blowhard himself, and looked over Pine's hero costume as he returned to his seat. It was much more interesting than whatever the professor was rambling on about, which in that moment seemed to be cabbages for some inexplicable reason.
Yuno's intrigue with Pine's costume was because, as a Quirk Knight, wouldn't have one unless he joined the Golden Dawn Squad, which as the top Squad was the one to aim for, so he just wore his usual long sleeved black shirt, ¾ length brown pants, lighter brown boots and a brown crossed leather belt that had a bag for supplies and what not on it when he was in battle. As such he was curious as to what the others in the class would wear and he had to give it to Pine, the boy had a rather elaborate getup.
Pine's hero, or as it was apparently called Huntsman, outfit consisted of an olive-green overcoat that didn't reach across his chest but was held there by a dark brown strap with a brass buckle with a second, larger strap that went over his hips and the jacket at an angle and on which his cane was held in its collapsed form. To add to it the coat had red shoulders for some reason, brown straps on his biceps that weren't symmetrical, and it ended just past his elbows. His forearms were wrapped in some black bracer things with the left hand one having a strap that went over the orange gloves he wore over his hands.
Under the coat he wore a white tunic of sorts that was open to show what looked like bandages or wrappings over his upper chest and lower neck, a wide brown belt, black pants, and boots. It was an overly fancy outfit that Yuno couldn't see a practical purpose in but for some reason it worked for Pine, and he was able to fight well in it. Hopefully the rest of the class wasn't as fancy with their outfits when they debuted them today.
"You've already had Grimm Studies with Professor Port so you already know how important this class is as this is where you will learn to be a hero." All Might said as he addressed the class with a smile on his face and getting Yuno's attention again. "However, this is the class where you will learn the basics of being a pro in general rather than the specifics that Huntsmen and Quirk Knights usually deal with. That means that it is here where you will learn what it means to fight in the name of good, and how to deal with the multitude of scenarios that you will face as heroes in the field one day that exceed things like creatures of Grimm though those are important as well. So, let's get into it. Today Class B's lesson will pull no punches…"
"That means we get to fight." Leo, he had insisted on the class calling him that after Grimm Studies and as his cousin was in the class and they shared a family name it made sense, said as All Might thrust out a handheld sign thing that said 'BATTLE' on it. "Alright let's do this, I hope you all make great rivals out there regardless of our branches."
"Yes, let's do this and get stronger as a class." Kendo said with a nod. "We should be helping each other to get better so make sure to push and support each other out there today."
"Alright, this is real manly stuff." Tetsutetsu roared. "Can't wait to see who I get to punch with my steel fists."
"You will certainly get that today young Tetsutetsu as you will be engaging in real combat." All Might said as he pressed a button on a remote control that he had on him and the panels that held their costume cases began to slide out. "And to do that you must look good in the process so that means costumes!"
The class had already seen this the day before as they'd had their cases on them for Grimm Studies though only Pine had actually had to wear it. Now, though, they'd get a chance to all wear their outfits and see how their initial designs held up in actual combat, for those with them that is. They knew that the designs may change over time as they got a better sense of them and added support items when needed but for now it was time to really test their first costumes in the field.
"As you know, these were designed based on your Quirk registration forms and the requests you sent in before school started for those of you who are currently in the normal hero branch or undecided on your future heroic path." All Might said as the class got up to collect their cases in an orderly fashion with those in the row nearest helping to pass out the cases to the respective students. "And you are already aware of how the other branches work so it's time get yourselves suited up and then meet me at Training Ground Beta for your first lesson in Hero Basic Training!"
Yuno didn't say anything to that, he just got up, grabbed his case while handing out the other one in the same storage area as his, and then headed to the changing room with the rest of his class. He was ready to show the class what he could do in actual combat and see what they could do as well as he continued his hero journey to becoming the Wizard King.
"They say that the clothes make the pros, and they were right about that." All Might said the whole class began to leave the tunnel as one, Kendo had made sure that they were all ready before leaving together, with the aid of Shoda for the boys, so that they came out as a class via the tunnel that connected the changing rooms to Training Ground Beta. "From this moment on you are now all heroes in training no matter the heroic path you have chosen, best to look cool doing so."
Yuno did take a moment to look around at the other costumes noting that they were a mix of personal style like Kendo's traditional Chinese dress that was made to allow movement, to practical as had to be the case for the scaly looking purple body suit that Tokage wore which he'd learn was made from her own dead cells so that it broke up with her, to themed like Komori's mushroom themed outfit that went well with her Quirk. Others were simple affairs like the black ensemble that Kuroiro had on that was clearly practical to his Quirk or the bare chested, metal based one that Tetsutetsu wore.
However, the was one costume that Yuno didn't get. It wasn't confusing per se, but it didn't give him any indications as to what its purpose was other than that making noise was involved and that was Shinso's costume. It didn't help that he still didn't know what Shinso's Quirk was, but Yuno took a moment to study the outfit.
In general, Shinso's outfit was a practical affair consisting of a loose short sleeved black shirt with gray shoulder pads and fishnet style arm sleeves to cover his forearms. His pants were a matching black with purple rings on it that had a pair of speakers on them for some reason just above his knees and were tucked into white boots with purple tips on it. The speakers were why Yuno thought that noise had to be a factor and the ones on his legs weren't the only ones on the costume.
That was because the boy had accented his outfit with black fingerless gloves, a black belt with more speakers on them, and for some reason a series of gray cloths around his neck that came off as a narrow scarf. The cloths almost hid a black metallic mask of sorts that was around his neck, and which seemed to be comprised of a series of metal plates.
All in all, it was a costume that didn't give Yuno any indication of what the boy could do other than that his Quirk had to be sound based in some way or else he wouldn't have speakers on it. Yuno was sure that he'd learn what the boy could do now, he was a recommended student so had to be good and Vlad had said that Shinso's Quirk could only be evaluated in this class, so Yuno was sure that it would be powerful.
"Wow, everyone looks so good in their outfits." Mimosa said from next to him. "Makes me wonder why we don't bother with them, other than in the Golden Dawn that is and that's more a uniform that they all wear rather than a costume."
"Ha well I just say that they all look good but not as good as me." Leo said as he came up to Yuno's other side.
At lunch, the Vermillion cousins had sat with him, Asta had opted to sit with his own class as apparently he had Grimm Studies and wanted to discuss it with Rose while Midoriya, Uraraka, Ida, and Nero all joined them which Yuno didn't mind. They were here to grow and compete and one way was to make their own friends though of course he expected Asta to randomly sit with him at times if there was space which Yuno didn't mind as it gave them a chance to banter over their progress.
In Yuno's case, his first friends here seemed to be the cousins in his class as they were all Quirk Knight track students. He didn't mind Mimosa, who insisted he call her by her first name though as with why Leo wanted to be called Leo it made sense to do so with her, as she seemed a kind and nice soul. Leo, on the other hand, could be annoying but in a good-natured way that was a bit like Asta.
They would be Yuno's first friends in the class but he was sure he'd make more over time that would include the entire class. Hell, Pine had actually joined them at lunch as well though he'd not said much, just answered some questions about the Grimm Studies class. He seemed a little shyer, but Yuno was sure that in time he'd become good friends with him and see Pine, and the rest of the class, as family. It was in that vein that he looked over the cousins to see what they were wearing.
Mimosa was dressed in clothes that were clearly expensive and fancy but not in your face about that which played to her more humble nature. What she was wearing was a puffy, cream-colored sweater of sorts with long sleeves that came down to her wrists, and white, puffy, shorts.
Over it all she wore a brown corset that was laced up in the center and pushed up her rather impressive chest that Yuno pointedly avoided looking at though it was clear that her school uniform hid the extent of it though even then you could tell that she was above average in that department. It also helped that the look was still highly conservative and Mimosa completed it with thigh high brown boots leaving only a strip of skin visible between the tops of the boots and the bottoms of her shorts and a brown a satchel at on her hip.
It was a nice outfit that suited her and while it was clearly expensive it wasn't some garish thing that screamed wealth and status. That was reserved for what Leo was wearing which, while Yuno didn't know fashion at all, still seemed to be an afront to it.
Leo wore a purple jacket of sorts with gold cuffs, gold stripes running from them and up to his shoulders, and gold edging to the center that went from his popped collar to the bottom of it. It was all synched at his waist and over a white tunic by an off-pink sash-like belt folded over to stay in place at his right hip with the satchel that was basically a staple of all Quirk Knights to carry supplies in on the back of it. To complete the look he wore cream pants that came to his mid calves and pointed black boots that lefts part of his lower legs bare. It was certainly a statement of some kind and one that Yuno didn't get at all.
"Er…" Yuno said looking over Leo as he finally responded to the redhead boy. "I'm not sure I'd say that."
"Come on Yuno this is the height of fashion in the Vermillion family." Leo said clearly annoyed at the statement. "My brother and sister wear similar styles though they have the red robes of our family's Squad over them, robes I will someday wear as well."
"It's a bit much Leo." Mimosa said with a smile. "But considering my brother's style it's not too bad. The Silvas have a similar familial outfit as well, but I prefer to make my own path away from my family name. That's why I intend on joining a different Squad to either the familial one or the one my moronic brother is in."
"Well, whatever works I guess." Yuno said with a shrug as they all gathered up around All Might and waited for him to start the class. "We don't really have costumes, so it doesn't really matter what we wear so long as it's practical."
"It looks like everyone is already here." All Might said interrupting their conversation, and a few others, as he looked over the class and was impressed at how efficient they had been, he could tell that this was a steadier class than Class 1-A though steadier didn't mean better just a different learning style and it seemed that the kids had been chosen aptly for it by Nezu which was just what All Might would expect from his old friend. "So, let's begin the combat training."
All Might paused there to see if there were any questions like young Ida had asked the day before but surprisingly there weren't at this stage of the training session. This class it seemed were more than willing to wait and listen for the instructions to come to them, something Kendo had suggested they do on their way as she inadvertently took charge of the class, before asking questions which worked just fine for All Might. As such, he quickly continued when there weren't any immediate questions having gotten a better hang for this teaching thing after Class 1-A's lesson.
"For this class I'm going to be moving you two steps ahead of what you would normally do by having you fight in teams and against other teams with one side being the heroes and the other the villains." All Might continued as he looked over the patiently waiting class. "This way you will get a feel for actual combat against humans right off the bat so you can figure out how best to battle villains in the field."
"Why are we in a cityscape?" Shishida asked his cultured and well enunciated words showing his upper-class upbringing as he stood there in a shirtless costume that was clearly designed to be accommodating for his body's change when he activated his Quirk. "This is the same location as the entrance exam, at least one of them, right?"
"Correct, this is the main location for city battles and was used for one of the entrance exams though we will be using a differed area cityscape than Class 1-A as there was extensive damage to one of the buildings during their training session." All Might confirmed though he didn't elaborate on what said damage was. "As for why we are here, it's because while most of the villain fights that you see on the news take place outside, that's only because they're the big visible battles that spill onto the streets and which you will be taught to avoid if at all possible due to the collateral damage they cause. Statistically speaking, the really serious fights with the worst and most devious of villains take place indoors."
"I see that does make logical sense." Shishida said with a nod as he understood the reason for this location. "It is safer for villains to get things done in backrooms and underground lairs as they're outside of the watchful eye of society where they can ensure that their villainous plans go unnoticed. So, it is a good idea to train us to fight indoors and in close confines as we will often be doing so."
"Again, correct though that is for the normal branch heroes." All Might said. "Quirk Knights and Huntsmen tend to be more outdoor and rural based so there will be exercises that take into account fighting in forests, mountains, and small towns in time but as with how normal heroes can experience what the other branches deal with so can the other branches experience what normal heroes do. This is all part of your rounded education."
"It is what I'd expect from U.A." Shishida said. "Please go on sir, I am sorry for interrupting you."
"Oh, er, right." All Might said a little taken aback by the formalness of the boy but moving on with his prepared remarks that he'd improved on from the day before. "The criminals who are the most dangerous, the truly intelligent ones, stay hidden in the shadows but it is our duty as heroes to shine the light of justice on them. That is the why this exercise is set up as it is."
"Seems like we're being thrown in at the deep end right from the start." Kendo said though she just sounded intrigued by the idea. "Why is that sir?"
"Because the best training you can get is the training that comes from being on the battlefield for nothing else can compare to learning from real experiences of combat." All Might said in response. "Most of you faced robots in the entrance exam which is a good start but combat against actual people who have the agency to think creatively and not on some set program is something else. In actual combat you will have to fight both with your wits seeing as your opponents can think as well, and safely as human are in general more fragile than robots."
"Makes sense, my brother always said that the best way to learn is through combat." Leo said grinning. "He's always going on about how battle is the business of the Quirk Knights so learning it through combat is key to improving as a Quirk Knight. My sister just punches people with fire until she wins but she's a little mad."
"Probably best to not let Mereoleona know you said that cousin." Mimosa said. "You know how she is."
"Yeah, not a good idea." Leo said with a wince at the thought of annoying his older sister.
"Sir, what are the consequences of losing the fight?" Kendo asked. "And how will it be determined who wins and loses?"
"Also, how will the teams be determined?" Shoda asked looking around. "We have an odd number of students so how will that be factored into this situation?"
"All fair questions and I will do my best to answer them now." All Might said holding a hand up to stop any more questions though none were forthcoming it seemed which made it easy to answer what had been asked. "Other than pride and whatever your teacher has to say to improve on your showing there are no consequences to losing. As for the matches themselves, the winners will be determined not by me but by how the scenario, that I will go into in a moment, plays out. As for teams, they will be decided by lot with one exception that will take into account the odd numbers, but I'll get into that after the scenario is explained."
"Ah I will wait for the scenario then." Kendo said. "I apologize for my impatience, sir."
"Lot makes sense for the teams." Shoda said getting it. "Sometimes in the field we won't be able to choose our allies or the numbers at play so learning to deal with a new partner on short notice, and the randomness of facing a team with what I presume will be 3 people so a numbers disadvantage as well, is a good idea."
"Yes this is just what to expect from U.A." Shishida said. "Preparing us for things like this from the start is a good teaching strategy."
"That is the logic behind this exercise." All Might said glad that they got it and that he didn't need a script anymore after the day before. "And in this exercise the villains have hidden a nuclear missile somewhere in their hideout, which will change for each battle, and so the heroes must foil these dastardly plans."
"How?" Kaibara asked.
"For the heroes they have to either catch the evil doers or capture the weapon by touching it." All Might said. "Conversely, the villains win if they protect their payloads for the duration of the unspecified time period, which will also change from battle to battle as something like this wouldn't be fixed in the real world, or capture the heroes. I will be providing capture tape to replicate handcuffs and once that is around the villains or heroes they are out. Now, time is limited, so all those on the normal track and young Pine will now choose their teams by drawing lots."
"That makes sense." Mimosa said understanding now who the three-person team was and why. "Quirk Knights usually work in set Squads with little overlap between them once you are a member of a Squad so putting the three of us on that track on a team will help for when we are on a Squad and also address the whole uneven numbers thing."
"Precisely though you will still be assigned a random opponent as well as whether you are the hero or villain." All Might said with a nod. "If we had other Huntsman track students, I'd assign them to a team as well and pit the two branches against each other like I did yesterday but at the moment young Pine is the only one so he will be paired with a hero which will still help as there will be times where the branches have to work together so best to be able to understand the different styles as well."
"This all makes a lot of sense." Kendo said looking around her classmates. "So, let's draw our lots and see who we are working with. Once you know who your partner is, meet up so you can prepare in advance."
"Please step forward." All Might said as he held up a box impressed with how young Kendo was taking charge of the situation. "And draw lots!"
They did as Yuno watched, he hadn't spoken during the class overview as he was listening to it so that he understood what the exercise was and now that he did the whole scenario and concept made sense. Even the teams were a good idea to address the numbers in the class as well as the nature of the Quirk Knight branch while also training the others to deal with random, last minute, allies. Hell, indoor fighting could happen for him as there were underground compounds and rural villainous bases that they may have to investigate and deal with, so it was all good practice.
Yuno was also fine with his team. As brash as Leo was, he sensed that the boy knew what he was talking about, and Mimosa was clearly an expert at support and assistance so her help would be invaluable to the match, and he fully intended to win it. As such he focused on the teams that were forming to be ready for whichever team he faced and some of them were interesting to say the least. It was a mixed bag but in their class they were already learning to get along well so there didn't seem to be friction in the teams. The other teams were:
Team A – Tetsutestu and Shishida so a team of brawn and raw power with some brains thrown in as well.
Team B – Pine and Kuroiro so a balanced team of stealth and strength with some solid defense thanks to Pine's versatile Quirk.
Team C – Kaibara and Fukidashi so solid mix of long range and close combat that could be a good balance if done right.
Team D – Tokage and Kamakiri which meant recon and precision were their strengths in this exercise.
Team E – Shinso and Komori which was the hardest to gage as Shinso's power was still unknown and the practicality of Komori's hadn't been assessed yet as it was a hard one to assess without seeing it in combat first.
Team F – Tsuburaba and Monoma which was another one that was hard to predict given Monoma's versatility so it would likely come down to who they were facing and how Monoma used Copy.
Team G – Bondo and Rin so a strong capture team with some useful range to it but again one that would be hard to assess before first contact in a battle scenario.
Team H – Yanagi and Kodai which seemed the best chemistry and the girls appeared to have already become good friends after only a few days so that should help them in the exercise.
Team I – Kendo and Awase which was very close combat based team so a lot would come down to their strategy for ensuring they fought that way.
Team J – Honenuki and Shoda in another balanced team with plenty of brainpower behind it that probably had the best adaption skills to whatever curveballs may occur in their exercise.
Team K – Shiozaki and Tsunotori which looked to be a solid pairing especially with the abilities of Shiozaki's hair though her clear religious outfit and pure personality could be an issue in their strategy as she clearly had sincere beliefs that Tsunotori would have to work around.
That left Yuno, Mimosa, and Leo as Team M and they'd already grouped up before the lots were drawn and watched as the others formed up as they found their partners for the coming matches. It was only once they all had their partners that All Might produced two more boxes, a black one labeled villains and a white one labeled heroes for the role and matchup draws that he would do.
"Alright now that the teams are sorted out, I declare that the first teams up will be…" All Might said as he reached into two boxes withdrew two balls that he held up to the class showing the class that fate had a sense of humor to start out as the first matchup had Team A as the heroes against Team M as the villains. "…these guys. Will those teams remain here so I can take you to the building for your battle. The rest please head to the observation room to watch the battles unfold."
The rest of the class nodded at that as they headed to the room that was set aside to watch the matches, going there in their pairs as they either discussed tactics or got to know each other better. The two teams that would start this out waited as they left and then followed as All Might led them to their assigned building for the first match.
Along the way he gave both teams floor plans for the building, one specially for the hero team and one for the villain team, that showed that they would be in a standard 7 story apartment complex that had the stairs on one wall and the rooms opposite them on the other side though the interior of each apartment was different. The floor plans were slightly different because the villain's one had their bomb location on it, as well as any alterations made to the interior that had not been there when it was built, which made sense as they were the ones defending it.
All Might also gave them the capture tape and special radios for the exercise as they walked to the building. The radios had been set to a frequency for the teams and could be reached by All Might's master one, but they couldn't hear the other team naturally.
It was all what you'd expect for such a mission if they had it in the field, minus the master frequency, and they were all ready for it. It was time to experience their first taste of human-on-human combat at U.A.
"Alright, villains you may enter now." All Might said and they did so, walking in and Mimosa made sure to shut the door behind her but only after All Might had added. "Heroes, you have 5 minutes to prepare before I give the go order."
With that All Might left and Tetsutestu and Shishida began planning their strategy outside, which basically boiled down to speed and surprise with Shishida going beast mode and charging in, smelling them out and trying to find them to see if they were spread out or grouped up in one place. They'd adjust from there and attack with a steel Tetsutetsu bashing his way through the doors, especially if Shishida could deduce that Leo was there as Tetsutetsu was the best person to face Leo given his fire-based Quirk. The villain's plan, by contrast, was much more complex.
That was because the moment the door was closed Mimosa created some seeds in her hands and tossed them down the corridor as they made their way to the stairs, making more as she did so that there were seeds outside the doors to each apartment, all 4 of them as each floor had 4 apartments, as they moved through the building. They continued like this up the stairs until they reached the third floor when it seemed to be safe to talk, Shishida could already be in beast mode which likely enhanced his hearing hence the caution, and Yuno asked the obvious question.
"Why are you scattering seeds Mimosa?"
"It's for a move I know that will really help us, but it will basically require all of my strength to focus on it as it is a large exertion on my Quirk." Mimosa said as they moved up to the fourth floor. "It will allow us to know exactly where they are and predict their moves."
"I see." Yuno said as they moved, and he pulled out the floor plans to see that the bomb was in the third apartment from the street on the 6th floor. "And with the radio you can set up in front of the bomb and monitor from there while Leo and I either take the fight to them or serve as a distraction."
"Correct to a point as I will need a guard, but Leo can do that." Mimosa said with a nod as they reached the 5th floor and did the same there before proceeding. "We are indoors, and fire isn't good here so best for him to be the guard duty where he can use his fire sensibly rather than blasting it around the building."
"That does make sense." Leo said. "I lake the finite control my brother has because of the nature of my Quirk but I can keep my blasts focused and that's easier to do from a fixed position at the moment. I will get better and stronger of course but for the moment best to fight within my capabilities."
"Precisely." Mimosa said as they cleared the 5th floor and moved to the 6th. "The issue is Shishida, his speed is great and he's stronger than the rest of us. Plus, with his enhancements when his Quirk is active, I don't doubt that he'll be able to sniff us out and pinpoint our locations with his nose."
"Leave him to me." Yuno said as they reached the 6th and headed to the right apartment as an idea came to him. "I've got an idea of how to handle him providing that I can lure him to me. I'll set up on the third floor and serve as bait. He should be able to roughly tell who's who by smell and as I'm a more favorable matchup than Leo, who Tetsutetsu is better suited to face, I expect Shishida to come at me."
"Are you sure he'll do that?" Leo asked as they entered the 6th floor apartment to find that it was a studio one that had been completely stripped of appliances and furniture but for the bomb in a back corner and a doorless bathroom to the side so a good place to defend. "Won't he come here to where there are two?"
"Not if you are here though we are banking on his smell being able to tell that it's you not me, I think he'll pick up Mimosa fine as there is likely some subtle difference between the genders that an acute nose will be able to pick up." Yuno said shaking his head as he turned to leave to go to the street facing apartment on the 3rd floor, it was the studio apartment on that floor, but as he left, he created a transport star and placed it in bathroom for fast travel back here if he was needed. "Tetsutetsu is better against fire seeing as it takes a lot of heat to melt steel so they'll send him here and play on how you can't use too much here."
"He'll learn that I can fight indoors real fast." Leo said with a grin. "Even if he can withstand my fire for a bit, he has a limit and I'll blast him past it."
"Just be safe Leo, you only need to hold him until Yuno returns or radios in that he's beaten Shishida." Mimosa said as she created a special seed that was different from the others and dropped it in the in front of her. "Then I can stop using my move and we can win as a team."
At that Mimosa held out her hands and all the seeds she'd scattered in the building sprouted and sent roots creeping through out the building. Whenever the roots met, they connected up to form one massive network of roots that formed and spread all over the interior of the building excluding the top floor where there were no seeds until Mimosa felt that everything was covered by the roots her seeds had sprouted. Only then did she cause the other seed to sprout.
The other seed was different and created a larger, thicker, dark green vine that rose with a twist to about waist height on Mimosa and then opened to reveal a dull red flower with white edges on the leaves. It was all impressive but as the roots touched it they began to pulse and the flower appeared to cough up a thick yellow and oddly translucent pollen then proceeded to form a three dimensional map of the building complete with the rooms and what was in them sized down to scale and confirming to Yuno that all the studios had been stripped bare but some of the other apartments were fully furnished.
Yuno's eyes went wide at the image as while not the most detailed, it was rather blocky, it was still a proper map and even had dense, non-translucent, pollen circles for the three of them where they were standing. It was a serious use of power and for the first time Yuno truly understood why Mimosa was a recommended student.
"That's impressive." Yuno said looking at her and noticing that she had her eyes closed and was visibly straining.
"Thanks, it took a lot of training to master this, but I drew inspiration from my cousin Noelle's hard work and made sure to work hard as well rather than just coast on the strength of my Quirk." Mimosa said her voice strained but she still opened her eyes to look at the map as she seemed to get a handle on what she was doing. "It takes a lot of my power and concentration to hold all these roots active but so long as they're touching something and connected to this special guide flower, I can recreate a blueprint of an area in pollen. I can't do anything more but maintain this at the moment hence why I need Leo to protect me but this is the least that I can do to help. I call this move Flower Guidepost."
"It shows the power our family has, and as annoying as her brother Kirsch is his Cherry Blossom Quirk is just as impressive." Leo said with a grin as he took a position up in front of the flower with his back to it. "Now go Yuno, it's starting soon."
"Right." Yuno said as he walked out and headed downstairs noting the roots on the walls, stairs, and floor that continued to pulse slightly as he moved. "Damn this is the power a top Quirk Knight House can possess. I've got to work harder to surpass it."
With firmer resolve after seeing the extent of what Mimosa could, and Yuno was sure the girl had more in her than just this move, he headed down to the third floor and into the chosen apartment to set up there. It was time to begin this and after what he'd seen Yuno couldn't let his teammates down. It was as the door closed that he heard All Might's voice in his ear over the radio there.
"Begin!"
Shishida roared as he activated Beast and barreled through the closed door of the building not bothering to open it as he sniffed wildly to get the scents of the villains in this battle trial. He loved being in beast mode as it was freeing and he got rather jubilant when he was in it, a side effect of the slight cognitive loss he got but the trade off of an enhanced constitution, stamina, and senses was more than worth it.
It was times like this that he wished that he could properly let go all the time like Hound Dog, the hero he looked up to the most. Alas his upbringing meant that he couldn't truly do that but when in beast mode Shishida did let himself go a bit and embraced that side of himself.
Tetsutetsu just followed him grinning his sharp toothed grin as he did. He could only turn his body to steel for a certain period of time, shorter than what Shishida could manage in beast mode at the moment, so he was saving it for when needed and he remained behind the immense bulk Shishida now had thanks to his Quirk.
Their plan was simple, the perfect kind for power hitters like them though Shishida did have a good tactical mind that in a larger battle he'd use but for now simple was the best strategy for their team. Add in Shishida's senses and this was a winning strategy for shore because his nose was the best in the class when his Quirk was active, so it was easy to use it to find the villains and track their locations. Then they'd either go at them together if they were all in the same room or they'd split up and take their targets separately based on who was were.
In the latter case the primary focus was determining where Leo as they had the best plan for him. Mimosa's combat skills were unclear though she was a recommended student so that couldn't be overlooked, as was Leo but his combat skills were clearer to them as his Quirk was very offensively inclined. Plus, the reputations of Leo's siblings were well known beyond the confines of the Quirk Knight branch, so they weren't taking him lightly at all.
Neither were they taking Yuno's skills lightly as those were clear as day as well. After all, Yuno had scored 109 in the entrance exam, the highest since the current Wizard King, and placed 2nd in the assessment test only because of Monoma's versatility which exceeded Yuno's. He was the tough one to face but as Tetsutetsu was pretty resistant to flames he'd be the one to handle Leo leaving Yuno to Shishida.
"You got their scents?" Tetsutetsu asked.
"Yeah, I got them, they're split up." Shishida said as he sniffed again to confirm it his voice excited as he smelt the air. "One's in the first apartment on the third floor, he's alone and the scent is clearly male. The other two are in the third apartment on the 6th floor. I deduce that the bomb is on the 6th floor hence why there are two people there but that could be a decoy for all we know. I can tell that one of the two scents is clearly female, that's got to be Vermillion Mimosa, the other male but there's a strong scent of expensive bathing products on him that I recognize so it has to be her cousin Leo. We know Yuno isn't wealthy."
"Why have they split up?" Tetsutetsu asked. "Any idea?"
"Probably to force us to fight them separately or lure us into a trap where we can be beaten easily." Shishida said as he swept his arm around the area. "See the roots here, that's got to be Mimosa's Quirk and if not for the distinctive differences between human and plant smells it might through me off. I think she has something big planned or else she might have used floral scents to throw me off, I presume her Quirk allows for that, so whatever she's doing we've got to be careful of."
"She's controlling this stuff from the 6th floor?" Tetsutetsu asked stunned at that as he processed what Shishida had said. "Damn, she's a lot better than I realized."
"She's a recommended student from a High House of the Quirk Knights with a direct line back to the first Wizard King." Shishida said. "She and her cousin shouldn't be taken lightly in this exercise; their Quirks are going to be really strong, but we can overcome that. Speed and physical strength will win this for us. Go to the 6th floor and crush them. You're best against both their Quirks. I'll deal with Yuno and then join you once I've captured him."
"Got it." Tetsutetsu said. "Be…"
Tetsutetsu didn't get to finish his sentence when Shishida let out a boisterous howl and charged up the stairs on all fours wrecking the banisters as he did. Tetsutetsu just shrugged at that and ran up the stairs as fast as he could trusting Shishida's nose as he did and ignoring the loud crash as Shishida charged through the door to where Yuno was and roared his attack. That was for him to deal with as Tetsutetsu ran up the stairs to where the cousins were ready for a fight against a pair of Vermillions.
"Yuno, Shishida is on his way to you." Mimosa's voice said over his radio and Yuno nodded as he backed up to put his back to the far wall so as to give himself enough space to handle someone as large as Shishida was when he was in his beast mode. "The speed of movement means that it has to be him, so your idea's worked. Tetsutetsu is coming for us."
"Got it, I'll deal with him." Yuno said as he created a wall of stars before him and ignored anything he was about to hear over the radio to focus on taking down Shishida. "Time to put the beast down."
As soon as Yuno finished saying that the door opposite him was obliterated by a punch and Shishida charged through it breaking the doorway with his bulk as if it was nothing in the process and roaring as he closed on Yuno. His fist was cocked back, and he was roaring at Yuno as he charged across the room at the black-haired boy.
It was clearly an attempt to intimidate Yuno, but he remained expressionless as the stars connected with lines of star power to form a constellation shield before him just as Shishida punched out at Yuno's face. The shield absorbed the blow with a boom though the force was greater than Yuno had expected and looked like it might not hold for a good portion of time.
"What the hell?" Shishida roared as Yuno created a field of stars in a semi-sphere around Shishida to strike him from multiple angles. "What is…oof."
"My constellation shield, my Quirk is defensive as well as offensive and transport based, I just didn't need to show off this aspect of it during the assessment test." Yuno said calmly as the stars around Shishida opened fire in rapid succession and slammed the beams of star power into his broad back and sides, the power increasing as Yuno got a sense for how much would be needed to take him down without doing any serious damage to Shishida in the process. "Now let's see what will hold out longer, my shield or your body."
Shishida roared in a mix of pain and frustration as he reared up to his full height, hands clenched over his head and brought them down on the constellation shield with as much force as he could bear while being blasted from all sides by rapid fire beams of Yuno's star power that singed his fur. The force of the blow shook the shield but didn't break it as Yuno grunted from the strain of doing so much with his Quirk but kept it up.
"Just break already." Shishida roared as he crashed against it again though his force less now as his energy was sapped from all the blows he was taking as Yuno had them to a good stun level to take down someone with the enhancements Shishida currently had. "What the hell is this, Quirk."
"Starforce and it's why I got the score I did on the entrance exam; in fact, this is a lot like the move I used to take down that zero-pointer single handedly." Yuno said as a third blow hit and this one actually cracked the shield. "Now go down already."
Shishida just roared as he saw his chance and put his all into his next hit, leaning back to full strength but Yuno was also giving his all and as the beans of powers from the stars slammed into Shishida's back and sides. In addition to those, Yuno created more in front of the shield that blasted Shishida in the chest and face with an overwhelming barrage of attacks that were set to bring down Shishida.
That was what did it as the sheer volume of attacks was too much for even Shishida's enhanced constitution to stand and rather than bring his fists forward as he finished his rear back, he just kept going before he toppled over to crash on his back with a thud, mouth open and eyes white that Yuno could see now that his sunglasses had been knocked askew by hitting the ground though oddly, he remained in his beast form despite being knocked out.
Yuno didn't pause as he dismissed his stars and created a transport one above Shishida's outstretched hands. He didn't know how long the big guy would be out for as Shishida might have a faster recovery time as part of the enhancements Beast gave him, so Yuno had to act fast and quickly lifted them up to bind them with the capture tape, doing so tightly to make it clear that Shishida had been captured. The moment he was done he heard All Might's voice over the radio.
"Shishida has been captured by the villains." All Might declared. "He's out."
"Hear that, Mimosa?" Yuno asked as he panted, he'd used a good bit of energy there, but he was still a fair ways off his limit, so he was in no danger of passing out like he had in the entrance exam.
"I did and I could use your help now." Mimosa said. "So, get here as fast as possible."
"Coming." Yuno said and he accessed his star in the bomb room and teleported to it, it was time to aid his team and win this.
"Yuno, Shishida is on his way to you." Mimosa said knowing that the radio would pick up her voice as she addressed him. "The speed of movement means that it has to be him, so your idea's worked. Tetsutetsu is coming for us."
"Got it, I'll deal with him." Yuno replied over the radio and Mimosa put her trust in him to handle Shishida. "Time to put the beast down."
"Yuno's got it." Mimosa said to Leo as she watched the movements on her pollen blueprint. "Brace for Tetsutetsu, eta 45 seconds."
"On it." Leo said with a grin as his hands glowed and he faced the door. "Come on tin man, let's see if you can handle my flames. Let me know once he's outside."
Mimosa nodded as she looked at the map a grimace on her face from the effort it took to maintain this move and tracked the dot moving up fast to their location. Their predictions on Shishida's nose were spot on as Tetsutestu didn't stop once on his path to them and in seconds he was on their hallway and heading to their door. It was time.
"Now!" Mimosa yelled.
Leo roared as he unleashed a pair of tight spiral flames at the door before them planning on blasting through it and into Tetsutetsu before he could turn to steel and this beating him that way, while hopefully not causing a fire in the process. However, before he could the door was punched off its hinges and into the approaching flames that caused it to explode in a shower of wood and cinders\.
"Ha, nice try Vermillion Leo but that won't work on me." Tetsutetsu roared as he charged, his body already steel having anticipated it and turned to it in the corridor of the 5th floor so that he could punch the door the moment he reached it and deal with any preemptive fire that might come his way. "Now I've got the upper hand."
"Not yet." Leo said with a grin as he held out his hands and blasted a pair of spiral flames out, one aimed at Tetsutetsu's head the other his chest making sure that he was focused solely on Tetsutetsu's body. "Now that you're steel, I can go all out without worrying that I'll burn you."
The blasts of fire hit on target causing Tetsutetsu's head to snap back as the flames hit it while the ones that hit his chest forced him to take a step back. Leo smirked as he kept it up, but that smirk soon fell as Tetsutestu snapped his head forward and lowered it before he began to walk towards Leo as he seemed to part the flames that were hitting. He was slowed by the force of Leo's attack but not stopped as he just pushed through it.
"Steel has a high melting point and while I'm keeping all this heat inside me it's not enough to take me down, you've got to go hotter if you want to beat me." Tetsutetsu said as he slowly walked forward and Leo grimaced, but he yelled as he increased his heat and power to try and stop Tetsutetsu. "This is why I'm facing you. Recommended or not, you've got nothing on someone you can't burn."
"Shut up!" Leo roared as he put more into it again, but Tetsutetsu just kept pushing through it. "You will go down."
The room was getting unbearably hot for Mimosa who was sweating now, and her roots were burning up from the heat, so she dismissed them causing them to wilt instantly now that she was no longer controlling them. She needed a plan and already had it as she backed up from the heat, her guidepost wilting away as she created the seeds that she needed in her hands but held them there as she waited for her opening.
"Come on Leo!" Mimosa yelled. "I know that you can do it!"
"I've got to, I would dishonor my siblings if I didn't." Leo said as he yelled and put even more into it, the room now in danger of igniting though why the sprinklers hadn't gone off was a mystery to all of them. "I can…"
"Too late." Tetsutetsu said as he punched out with his left fist to slam it into Leo's gut causing him to double over in pain though the blow had been slowed by the fire that Tetsutestu had been taken though it did end Leo's fire to show a glowing Tetsutetsu but as the flames ended the steel that was his body began to slowly cool down. "You're done."
Leo didn't even get a chance to straighten up before Tetsutetsu slammed the back of his left hand into the side of Leo's face with enough force to break his jaw and almost knock him out though thankfully Leo's natural heat resistance thanks to his Quirk prevented him from getting burned by the hot metal. It of course didn't prevent him from being blasted to the side and through the flimsy walls of the apartment and into the next one where he crashed to the ground as he rolled through the open plan living room of the next-door apartment before slamming hard into a sofa.
Leo's vision was blurring, and he was in a lot of pain, but he had to push through it before he passed out and with the last of his strength, he raised his left hand and aimed at a small metal item above Tetsutetsu's head and fired off the tightest spiral of flames that he could manage from his palm. Leo had been surprised that he'd not set the feature off with the heat he'd been generating but a direct hit on it would ensure that it was set off.
Tetsutestu didn't notice this as he had turned to face Mimosa, so he was unaware of the blast as it hit the sprinkler head above him and the direct hit did what Leo's heat hadn't and triggered it. Instantly the sprinklers in the apartment that the bomb was in went off and doused the place in a stream of water that caused Tetsutestu to steam as his body was rapidly cooled.
"Get him Mimosa, he should be cool enough now." Leo said with a smile as the last of his strength left him and he passed out where he lay.
"What the…?" Tetsutetsu asked as the room was soaked in seconds, and he cooled down so fast that his movements began to slow from the extreme heat change he'd been through. "How?"
"You didn't knock Leo out right away." Mimosa said with a grin as she tossed her first handful of seeds at Tetsutetsu's feet as he looked up to the sprinkler that was flooding the room with cold water. "He used the last of his strength to cool you down for me."
"Huh?" Tetsutetsu asked as he looked to Mimosa to, she her toss her second handful of seeds into the air from both hands.
"I'm a Vermillion, I may not be an arrogant brat like my brother, but my name means something." Mimosa said as thick vines, thicker than even Shiozaki's hair, burst forth from the seeds in the air and on the ground around Tetsutetsu and wrapped around him. "I may not seem it because I prefer to provide support and heal with my Quirk but that doesn't mean that I don't have offense as well. I just needed you to cool down to avoid my vines burning on contact, heat and fire annoy me which is saying something given the traditional Quirks of my family."
Tetsutetsu couldn't respond as vines had ensnared their way around his mouth, they were too thick to bite through, leaving only his nose and eyes visible. Mimosa moved her arms to control the vines as she lifted Tetsutestu off the ground and moved him into a hog-tied position while being suspended from the air and connected to the ground at the same time. She smiled at that and was about to call for Yuno when she heard her radio crackle in her ear.
"Shishida has been captured by the villains." All Might declared. "He's out."
"Hear that, Mimosa?" Yuno asked over the radio a second after All Might's declaration with a slight pant to his voice.
"I did and I could use your help now." Mimosa said. "So, get here as fast as possible."
"Coming." Yuno's reply came back, and Mimosa grinned at Tetsutetsu knowing that they'd won this.
A second later Yuno walked out of the bathroom having gotten there via the transport star that he'd left and blinked through the water pouring from the sprinklers in the ceiling. It was certainly a strange sight to see Tetsutetsu hogtied with vines that suspended him in the air as Mimosa held her arms out ignoring the water pouring down around them. There was a hole in the far wall and Yuno could see Leo's prone body on the ground there.
"Huh I take it things didn't go well for Leo." Yuno said as he pulled out the capture tape and walked through the water to Tetsutetsu who was trying in extreme vain to rip free of the vines, but they didn't budge. "He couldn't stop Tetsutetsu I see."
"Not hot enough, yet." Mimosa said as the moved the vines to expose Tetsutetsu's wrists and brought them together. "This was probably the worst matchup for him in this class. Shiozaki would have been the exact opposite with her hair."
"It happens, he'll learn from it." Yuno said idly as he wrapped the tape around Tetsutetsu's wrists to secure the capture. "We all will."
"The heroes have been incapacitated!" All Might's voice declared over the radio. "The villains have won. Please wait for the robots to take away young Vermillion Leo and young Shishida and then come back for the debrief."
At that Mimosa ended the vines and they wilted away dropping a still steel Tetsutetsu to the ground with a splash in the water that had finally stopped pouring. She was near her limit and fell to a knee but waved Yuno off as he approached her.
"I'm fine." Mimosa said. "I need to be able to ride this out on my own. In battle I may push past my limits so I should be able to handle it."
"Ok but you can lean on your friends as well." Yuno said as Tetsutetsu broke the tape, rolled over, and ended his Quirk.
"Damn we lost." Tetsutetsu said from his back as he panted there his body sore in ways he'd never experienced before. "Holy shit though, that Quirk is unreal Vermillion. I can see why you're a recommended student and Yuno took down Shishida, we were really out classed in this match."
"We won because we had three people and because Leo hit that sprinkler, if he hadn't then you might have won as I couldn't beat you while you were still hot from his fire." Mimosa said as the robots arrived. "But thank you and please, call me Mimosa, it will be easier."
Yuno just nodded at that as Tetsutetsu grumbled but accepted his loss. Mimosa was right, they'd won because of all of them working together like a team but that was the point of being in a Quirk Knight Squad and Yuno gave a small smile as he went to help Tetsutetsu up so that they could all return once their friends had been taken away. It was time to get a debrief on how they'd done.
"That was an impressive match there." All Might said once they were back in the observation room and Leo and Shishida had been taken to the Nurse's Office for treatment from Recovery Girl. "The villains won and the MVP of that was young Vermillion Mimosa. Now can anyone tell me why that is the case?"
"She was the key to her team's success though that was a true team effort." Kendo said as she raised her hand. "Vermillion had a plan from the start with her seeds creating that map, which none of us realized she could do, and she used that to plan accordingly. Yuno and Leo played their parts well, but she coordinated it and even had more ready for Tetsutetsu at the end to capture him and hold him for Yuno to get the capture tape on him. She put trust in Yuno to beat Shishida and Leo pushed past the hit to cool things down to ensure that she could use her Quirk. That's why she's the MVP though if just one of them hadn't done what they did Tetsutetsu would have reached the bomb and won."
The class just nodded at that. They'd all been shocked by Mimosa's power and as none knew her beforehand no one had been able to explain it, but it really showed why she was a recommended student. They'd also been impressed by Yuno's shield and how he held it while attacking Shishida though Kendo had been able to explain that one with ease as she'd seen it in the entrance exam, and how he'd taken down Shishida. Even Leo's actions, while the most reckless had been impressive to ensure victory.
Overall, it was a solid team effort against a solid plan from the other team so overall it was a good match to start the training session with. It also had the effect of motivating the class to do well in their matches. They all wanted to be as impressive as the first two teams so were ready to show that.
"Precisely and as young Kendo noted that was a great team effort on both sides with solid plans that played to their strengths so even a loss there wasn't bad as you all did well." All Might said as he pulled out the next balls to see who was in the second matchup and revealed them to the class. "But the show must go on and next up we have Team C as the heroes against Team F as the villains. Please follow me."
All Might led them out of the room as they all chatted and on the way out Monoma, who was wearing an elaborately fancy costume that seemed to have no practical purpose but for the stopwatches on his belt that had to do with the time limit he had when he copied a Quirk, brushed past Mimosa without her noticing. She'd shown her skills in that battle, and he intended to use them himself in his coming match that he'd win.
The others of course missed this as they chatted and congratulated the three people from the first battle as they'd all done well in it and asked some questions about their Quirks so as to learn more about them with Shiozaki asking Mimosa for tips given the similarities of their Quirks. Well, some did and others stayed in their partnerships and discussed the battles to come and plans for it. They were all so engrossed that they didn't realize the next match was about to start until All Might returned and began it.
That was when they settled into watching it and saw that Monoma had copied Mimosa's Quirk and used it to set up traps of vines and plants in the building while Tsuburaba used his Solid Air Quirk to bloc off paths for the heroes. It worked to funnel them to a single spot and really cut off Fukidashi's range that he had with his Comic Quirk, though he still got rid of some of the plants with onomatopoeia that would kill them, but not before he'd fallen into an air trap. It was as Kaibara was trying to break him out with Gyrate, which could break Tsuburaba's air, that Monoma appeared and copied that Quirk.
From there it was over as Monoma used his surprise to knock out Kaibara, who'd managed to free Fukidashi, but the latter was struck in the chest by a gyrating arm of Monoma's and thrown back into a solid air wall to stun him before he could use Comic and allowed Monoma to capture him. Monoma then captured Kaibara for the win. It seemed like Monoma had a good handle on things and was the MVP, but Yuno wasn't so sure as he watched as Monoma began to laugh. It seemed the kid had something off about him that might snap soon though what would cause that was beyond Yuno.
What it was Yuno couldn't dwell on as the matches really picked up from there and next up was Team K as the villains verses Team D as the heroes. As such, he focused on watching them and learning what he could from his classmates.
This time however the heroes won the match despite a large amount of vines being used by Shiozaki as she guarded the bomb with them and attacked Kamakiri when he tried to get to it while Tsunotori looked around for Tokage. Unfortunately, as strong as Vines was, Kamakiri's Razor Sharp Quirk was a great counter for it and when coupled with his agility he was able to slice and dice the vines as fast as they were grown and hold off Shiozaki to set up Tokage.
That was because Tokage had used Lizard Tail Splitter to first hide and then ambush Tsunotori with her fists long enough to capture her and break the communications as Shiozaki was too preoccupied trying to punish Kamakiri to focus on her teammate. Then all Tokage had to do was regenerate the parts of her body that had died and break up again to go around the vines and reform sitting atop the bomb with a grin on her face to secure the win for her team. As it had been her plan she got the MVP of it but Kamakiri had done well himself.
After them the next two teams to go were Team H as the heroes and team J as the villains. In this matchup the class watched the fasted victory so far as Honenuki showed his recommended status by softening the entrance a few feet in, as well as other key places just in case the heroes got past the entrance, to make Yanagi and Kodai sink right at the start and then resolidifying it as soon as their hands had sunk into the ground as he'd been hiding in the shadows for it so that neither could use their Quirks.
Once captured Shoda appeared and used Twin Impact to strike the girls in places that the second blow would knock them out, making sure to start with Yanagi as her Poltergeist Quirk might still be usable, so that they could be captured after Honenuki got them out of the ground. The girls had to go to the Nurse's Office as well but it was necessary and Honenuki got the MVP for the match.
The penultimate matchup ended up being between Team I who were heroes and Team D who were the villains. This was the first true surprise match of the day as Kendo, who'd been doing a lot of commentary as she had a good eye for it while showing that she was a big sister type to the class by being there for those who'd lost, had underestimated what Bondo could do with his Cemedine Quirk. That was compounded by Rin using his scales from range to occupy her and Awase, who required physical touch for Weld to work, occupied them and force Kendo to use her Big Fist Quirk to shield them.
The moment that happened Bondo acted and doused both in glue that he instantly hardened the moment they put their hands on something and thus ensuring that they couldn't move. Even with the added strength of her hands enlarged, Kendo couldn't do much as that strength was in the hands that she couldn't use so when she realized she couldn't do that, or that shrinking her hands would work, she surrendered before being captured and Awase did the same to give Team D the win. This was also the first match were the MVP was shared by the winning team as it had been a joint plan to win it.
With that done though that meant that there was only one matchup left, Team B against Team E, so all that was needed there was the draw for the roles. As soon as the debrief for the battle before was over, All Might reached into the boxes one last time to see who were the heroes and who were villains in the final match.
"And the final matchup will see…" All Might said as he drew the balls from the boxes. "Team B as the villains against Team E as the heroes. Please follow me."
At that All Might, for the final time and he was glad as he was nearing his limit for the day, led them to where the last matchup was being held, a four-story corner house that had a different layout on each floor. The first floor was a series of rooms off a central corridor with one that had a ladder up to a large open plan and completely bare second floor while the third, accessed by wooden stairs along one wall, was a maze that led to a single chamber where the bomb was and the 4th just a mass of storage. It was designed for a quicker round, and All Might needed that.
Still, he gave them the gear and floor plans before telling the heroes that they had 5 minutes to prepare and then left them to get back to the observation room in time. As soon as he said that Oscar and Kuroiro went inside and closed the door to move quickly to the bomb while Komori and Shinso remained outside. He'd not said a word all day as he'd been focused on watching the battles but now, he had to as Komori turned to him to finally ask him what she had to ask.
"All right, shroom." Komori said. "What's your Quirk? I need to know before we go in."
"Do you?" Shinso asked looking at her and meeting her oddly pupiled eyes with his own purple ones.
"Yes, I…" Komori began before Shinso brainwashed her leaving her gaping for a moment with white eyes until he released his hold, and she blinked before looking at him a look of total confusion on her face. "Huh, what happened?"
"My Quirk is called Brainwashing." Shinso said simply. "So long as you respond to me when it is active I can brainwash you. When that happens, you're effectively my puppet. I can't make you speak, yet, and I can only order simple tasks that don't require much thought so I can order you to move or write out Vlad King but if I was to ask you to write out the name our teacher down you wouldn't be able to as that would require thought."
"Oh wow, shroom." Komori said with a shiver as she understood Shinso's Quirk. "That's quite sinister but also really useful."
"It is sinister and only works on humans, but I want to be a hero with it." Shinso said his tone neutral, but he remembered how people reacted to it in the past and how that motivated him to use his power for good. "So I applied for the special recommendation Eraser Head was offering, part of a program he set up for Quirks like his that can't be tested well by the entrance exam but for kids like me who lack the connections for a recommendation."
"Oh, I see." Komori said. "The entrance exam was against robots and so you're Quirk, as strong as it is, wasn't going to be useful in it."
"Correct." Shinso said with a nod. "That's why I applied for the recommendation and after some interviews and proof I fit what Eraser Head was looking for I was lucky enough to be chosen for it and thus got his recommendation. After that I took the recommended exam where I brainwashed all my opponents to win the race while using them to help me, and got into U.A. that way. It's also why I use binding cloths like him, he's teaching me to use them but because he recommended me, he can't be my homeroom teacher hence why I'm in Class 1-B. It's also why I was last in the assessment test, it's really hard to test my Quirk outside something like this."
"But this is the perfect venue for it." Komori said getting it now. "And I take it I'm the only one who knows what it is at the moment."
"You are and we will use that fact and my Quirk to win this battle." Shinso said. "But to achieve this we will need your Quirk as well because our opponents aren't as straightforward as others were in this exercise."
"Sure, I am your teammate so we should work together, shroom." Komori said. "What do you need me to do?"
"Blanket this place with mushrooms, so long as you can avoid hitting me, and find Kuroiro." Shinso said. "He's the biggest nuisance in this fight because his Black Quirk allows him to travel around and attack from anywhere that is dark, so we have to make sure he has no shadows. I'll brainwash him as soon as I can. Then we leave him and proceed to the bomb which is where I expect we'll find Pine. He's got protection and strength all in one package with his Quirk, so it makes logical sense that he'll be guarding the bomb. He'll be easy, I won't even need to use my item to face, but I will use it if need be."
"Ok and that item is?" Komori said understanding the plan as Shinso put his mask on.
"This but I'll only use it if need be." Shinso said. "I want to save it for later as it's designed to overcome an obvious weakness of mine but at the moment that weakness has yet to be realized."
"Got it." Komori said deciding not to ask about said weakness as she pulled out some fungal disinfectant from a pouch on her belt that she made sure was always on her costume. "Here, rub this all over. It will kill my cute mushrooms' spores, so you won't be affected."
"Thanks." Shinso said as he took it and began applying it all over his body, turning so that Komori could do his back before he did the same to her, apparently she wasn't immune to her own Quirk sprouting on her body. "A useful thing to have for your Quirk."
"My cuties are versatile but I tend to affect large areas that could hit my allies as well so having fungal killer on me is essential." Komori said as they worked before she noted. "You know a fair bit about tactics, shroom."
"I watched the assessment closely." Shinso said. "I figured it might help to learn what the class could do especially because there wasn't much else that I could do in it seeing as none of those tests would actually test my Quirk unless I used it on a classmate which wasn't the purpose of it."
"Clever." Komori said. "I can see why you got in how you did."
"I'm just lucky." Shinso said simply. "Without Eraser's help I'd have had to apply normally, likely fail given the apparent nature of the standard entrance exam here, but I would also apply for the General Studies Course just in case. That one I knew that I would get into because I had the grades and scores to manage it. From there I'd apply to transfer to the Hero Course after a good showing at the Sports Festival. That was my plan until I heard of this way and took it. If I did fail the recommended exam, I'd still had my original plan as a backup. Thankfully, I didn't and here I am. I intend to repay what Eraser did for me one day by enacting a similar program when I am a pro."
"A nice thing to do, shroom." Komori said. "And…"
"Final match, begin." All Might's voice said in their ears.
"Let's go." Shinso said.
Komori nodded as he opened the door, and she walked in first with Shinso behind her. It was time to win this and show that he truly belonged in U.A.'s Hero Course.
"So, what's the plan Pine?" Kuroiro asked once the door was closed behind them, and they moved down the corridor to the room that had a ladder up to the next level. "Got one?"
"It's simple but I do have one." Oscar said as he quickly assessed that Kuroiro wasn't much of a leader but clearly could think on his feet though Oscar himself wasn't a leader either he felt even if it seemed like Ozpin was grooming him to be one. "I'll go to the bomb room and guard it; my Quirk can protect it and I have the strength to fight them off in a direct fight."
"Makes sense." Kuroiro said. "Only Kendo, Shishida, and Tetsutetsu can match you in strength it seems."
"Raw physical strength yes but there is more to strength than muscles." Oscar said. "Other Quirks will be hard for me to face. Anyway, while I am guarding the bomb, you use the shadows to wait for them to enter. The moment they enter grab Komori and haul her away to the end of the corridor. Knock her out if you can, I don't know what tricks she might have up her sleeves, and capture her. From there retreat to the third level and wait for Shinso to get there, though if you can't defeat her in the opening move do so regardless. In either case do what you can to frustrate Shinso and force him to reveal his Quirk so that if he gets to me, I know what it is and can avoid it before knocking him out."
"Simple and a lot of work but I like the shadows." Kuroiro said as they reached the right door and Oscar handed Kuroiro the blueprints to help him out before he backed up to meld into the shadows. "I'll go knock out the lights."
"Leave a few." Oscar said as he reached the ladder and began to climb. "They may be too suspicious otherwise."
"Of course." Kuroiro said as he began to merge with the shadows in the hallway. "Now to take them to the abyss."
With that Kuroiro melded into the darkness and moved away with some ringing laughter that came out as a sinister chuckle. Oscar wasn't sure what to make of it, but he left it as Kuroiro being odd and moved up to the second floor and then the third to find the bomb and set up in front of it. It wasn't the best plan, but he was sure that they could win with it. So long as they dealt with Komori and her mushrooms they had a chance. After all, how strong could Shinso's Quirk be?
Shinso followed Komori into the building as she pulled out a pair of water guns that she'd specially designed to increase the moisture and began squirting them as mushrooms appeared all around them and continued to appear down the corridor and on the walls. It was as they were appearing that Shinso noticed that there were only had a few lights on which he didn't like and began to call out to Komori about it.
"Wait, be careful, don't…"
Shinso didn't get to finish before a chuckling sound came from the shadows above where Komori was and a black hand with a silver cuff at the wrist shot out from them and grabbed Komori by the back of her dress. She yelped and dropped her gun things as darkness seemed to shift and shoot down the wall carrying her away with it, which was an odd sight to say the least.
That had to be Kuroiro's Black Quirk at work. It was a surprisingly useful one for stealth as it allowed him to merge with darkness or anything dark for that matter and if he had a scheming mind it would be damned useful, but Shinso wasn't going to deal with that now.
Instead, he just thrust out the binding cloth and warped it around Komori's angle, just managing it as she was at the end of his range with it as he was still learning to use the damned thing, and then yanked back with all his strength. He had more raw strength and a sturdier position than Kuroiro had so he was able to pull Komori free though there was a brief moment of resistance before a ripping sound and part of her dress came off in Kuroiro's hand as he continued to try and pull her away.
The moment she was free, an explosion of mushrooms filled the corridor as Komori got over her shock at Kuroiro's initial attack to release a ton of spores for her darling mushrooms, all of which she knew the Latin names for, that grew almost as soon as they hit a surface. It would serve as a good barrier to prevent Kuroiro from coming back for her before Shinso could come to her assistance.
As this was happening, Komori herself landed hard on the ground with a thud. Shinso hurried forward to check on her as he recalled his cloth to its normal position around his neck, opening the doors along the way to make sure there was no way to the next level and reached her a few moments later as she got to her feet.
"That wasn't fun, shroom." Komori said with a pout. "And I didn't get to use my secret weapon, his head wasn't free the entire time."
"You have one?" Shinso said as he pressed them on, more mushrooms appearing as moved down the corridor checking the rooms to their sides as they went.
"A final trick to get around a fungal killer should an opponent have one as well but it's not a cutie cos its microscopic." Komori said as they opened a door to see a flash of silver shoe disappearing through a jagged hole in the roof with a metal ladder coming down from it. "But…"
"Hold that thought." Shinso said as he turned a dial on his mask hoping to get Kuroiro in this opening as it was too good to pass up and then speaking with a good mimicry of Oscar's voice. "Kuroiro, I'm coming down to assist you."
"What, no Pine, stay…." Kuroiro's voice said from above but that's all he got out before Shinso's Quirk took affect and he was brainwashed.
"Wait what just happened?" Komori asked as they headed to the ladder. "Did you get him?"
"I did." Shinso said with a smile under his mask as it had clearly worked as intended. "I think he was retreating up a level to try and regroup with Pine or find another angle of attack as he seems good at hit and run fights, so I called out to him to get him."
That had been Kuroiro's exact plan. He'd grabbed Komori, which had been tough as he had a shyness around girls and he found her especially attractive in the class already, but he'd done it and grabbed her before he fled to knock her out. However, Shinso showed off that the cloth things around his neck were some kind of capture item not a strange fashion statement, so he needed to fall back as Pine had suggested and then harass them on the third level as they headed to their defeat at Pine's hands. Plus, those mushrooms were obscuring his precious darkness, so he needed to get clear of them as well.
As such Kuroiro had retreated, the light from the second floor that came in through the hole in the ceiling was such that he had to climb the ladder and get into a barren open room with nothing but a concrete floor, pillars for support and a wooden staircase along the far fall leading up to the next level. It was an open space that he didn't want to get caught in, but would actually be good for Pine's Quirk if he'd opted to stay but the defensive aspect of his Quirk was better used protecting the bomb so he couldn't be here and as such Kuroiro needed to move up to the third level as fast as possible.
Unfortunately, Pine must have gotten nervous from a lack of success, after the failed first contact, and had decided to come to help out and called to him but Kuroiro had tried to ward him off as he was needed to protect the bomb but before he could finish his reply to Pine Kuroiro's mind went blank. He wouldn't remember a thing until the match ended.
"I get that." Komori said as they began climb the ladder with her going first just in case there was a surprise waiting for them, so she used her mushroom spores to create a barrier between around the edge of the hole. "But how did you speak with Pine's voice, or close enough that in such a situation Kuroiro wouldn't notice."
"My support item, Artificial Vocal Cords." Shinso said referring to his mask. "My Quirk won't work through a megaphone or something like that, so this was designed instead, it uses metal plates to change my voice into rough approximations of other people's voices without putting my voice through something that would nullify the effects of Brainwashing. It's how I can use it after people learn what my Quirk is, that's the weakness this item was designed to overcome."
"Damn that's really smart." Komori said as they reached the second floor and found Kuroiro just standing there facing the stairs along one of the walls with his mouth slightly open and his eyes wide and oddly white. "Huh, so this is what it looks like. I was surprised you got him without seeing him."
"Vision isn't needed for Brainwashing; the person just has to be within vocal range for it to work." Shinso said as they walked up to Kuroiro, but he held out his hand to stop Komori from going nearer. "Don't touch him, enough physical contact can break my hold. That or me ending it are the only ways to do so, no one has ever managed to break it without either thing happened."
"Seriously, your Quirk is like really strong, shroom." Komori said.
"So is yours, those mushrooms are annoying as hell and if you can incapacitate someone with them that's really good." Shinso said. "Not to mention how annoying getting covered in mushrooms would be. You could even use it to overcome someone with an invisibility or camouflage-based Quirk."
"The secret weapon I have can incapacitate someone because it's a spore for a microscopic fungus that can get into your lungs and airways and cut them off." Komori said. "It's not going to kill but breathing will be a damned sight harder and as they're struggling, they're open to being caught."
"Ok that's scary." Shinso said reassessing just how strong Komori was as he looked at Kuroiro. "Now let's see. Kuroiro, hand over your layout."
"Will that…" Komori said but before she could finish Kuroiro did just that, reaching into his pocket and pulling out a building layout that he handed to Shinso who took it and left him there as he turned and began to walk to the stairs with Komori jogging to catch up to him. "Ok so it did work."
"Yup and good thing too." Shinso said showing it to her as they made their way to the wooden stairs just leaving Kuroiro standing in the room. "See, it's different to ours."
Shinso was right, the whole thing was different with the empty second floor shown, theirs showed a similar layout to the first floor, and a full maze with a marked path through it for the 3rd floor where it ended in a chamber that had the bomb in it. Clearly their map was an official one that heroes would be expected to get while the villains in this scenario had the right one with the modifications they'd made to their base. It was certainly a good touch to the realism of the exercise.
"Um, are we not going to capture him?" Komori asked.
"It would tip off Pine." Shinso said removing his mask as they reached the third level and used the map to make it through as fast as possible all the while keeping eyes and ears open for Pine. "All Might's been announcing captures for some reason so best to avoid that right now. Plus, we just need to secure the bomb to win, and we will do that now."
Shinso was right, they'd reached the door to the bomb room while he'd been talking so he raised his foot to kick it open as soon as they reached it and then walked in though it thus barely breaking stride on the way to where the bomb was. Inside, as expected, was Pine standing before the bomb with his cane out and twirling in his hand before the though he jumped at their arrival but had the cane ready and a green sphere of his personal energy around him and the bomb the moment he realized that they were there. His reactions were fast, Shinso had to give him that.
For his part Oscar had been nervous. He'd not heard anything from Kuroiro then entire match and was about to contact him despite how early into the match it was. He was trusting Kuroiro, but he'd clearly failed somehow and now it was up to Oscar as he set himself knowing that his energy shield should hold against pretty much any physical attack that was thrown at it.
"Where's Kuroiro?" Oscar asked through it. "What have you done to him?"
"Why do you want to know?" Shinso asked back with a grin as he calmly walked towards the shield looking Pine in the eye the entire time.
"Because he's…" Oscar began before Shinso brainwashed him and he dropped his cane to the ground with a clatter as he had the same reaction as Kuroiro had downstairs.
"Too easy." Shinso said with a smirk as the green sphere deactivated, a bonus of Brainwashing was that an active Quirk that required constant activation, so not Komori's mushrooms as she was no longer in control of them once she released the spores, was deactivated once the subject was brainwashed, and Shinso just walked past Pine to place his hand on the bomb. "We win."
"And the heroes win!" All Might declared. "With that the battle trials are over, please report to the same spot we started the exercise at, that includes the final team as you will get your debrief there. Young Shinso, please release young Pine and young Kuroiro from your brainwashing."
"Sure." Shinso said as he released his Quirk. "Come on, let's get back to our class, I'm sure many will have questions for me."
"What just happened to me?" Oscar asked as he blinked and raised his hand to his head as he shock it to try and figure out why his cane was on the ground and Shinso was no longer in front of him. "One minute I was facing Shinso and now…"
"You've lost." Shinso said as he passed Pine. "My Quirk, it's called Brainwashing. Once you replied to my question you didn't stand a chance."
"Hey, I…" Oscar began before Shinso got him again.
"Sorry, couldn't resist." Shinso said with a chuckle but at a look from Komori before he released it. "Come on Pine, let's get Kuroiro and I'll explain it and why you two lost."
"Um ok." Oscar said as he followed Shinso out and they headed through the maze to get Kuroiro who was just as confused where he stood as he had no idea what was going on when he was released from Shinso's Quirk.
Shinso just smiled at it as they reached the last person in the match, and he began to explain his Quirk as they made their way back to the tunnel to the training grounds. He'd shown how good he could be and why he was a recommended student. Sure, now that they knew what he could do they could prepare but that was why he had his Artificial Vocal Cords and besides, he was going to be a hero so he welcomed the challenge as he and his class grew. He was still smiling as he answered several questions from Pine and Kuroiro asked him about his Quirk.
"Woah." Mimosa said as she stared in amazement at Shinso's dominating win over Pine and Kuroiro and All Might finally revealed what was going on as it was Shinso's Quirk at work now that the final battle was over. "That's his Quirk?"
"Brainwashing." Yuno said. "That's some serious power. Even Asta's swords couldn't beat that I'd say and given his loudmouth he'd easily fall for it."
"It's a hero worthy Quirk indeed." Kendo said as they all began to make their way to the exit and began to follow All Might to the tunnel to the training ground. "And one that would never pass the entrance exam because that is combat against robots. Vlad did say that Shinso's Quirk could only be tested in something like this after all."
"Correct young Kendo." All Might said as they walked to meet up with the last 4. "It is why Eraser Head created a special recommendation that he would give to a worthy candidate so that he or she can take the recommended exam which is different from the normal exam. He knows that some heroes don't have Quirks that can be tested well in our exam, so he gave young Shinso the chance to get in via his recommendation, which he passed. As you can see, that is a strong and useful Quirk that will serve him well as a hero."
"It really is." Shoda said as they reached the tunnel to find the 4 of them waiting and all of them turned to All Might. "I take it that Shinso was the MVP of the final match."
"Correct and that is all I need to say on the matter given how quick it was." All Might said as he felt his buff form begin to reach its limit for the day. "And now to leave like a hero, quickly."
With that he turned and sprinted off so that he was a blur that kicked up a lot of smoke and vanished into an alleyway before the class could blink. It was a rather anticlimactic way to end the day but clearly it was over.
"Well, that was an interesting way to end the training session." Kendo said turning to the class. "Certainly, a good experience. Come on, let's get back, change, and make sure the four in the Nurse's Office are ok."
The others nodded as some approached Shinso and began asking him questions while they walked back to the changing rooms. Yuno for his part was thinking on the day and how it had been. It had certainly been good, his team had won their match as well as winning the individual fight he'd had in it, and he'd learned a lot about the others in his class so he could grow and surpass them, and Asta of course, to one day become the Wizard King.
Today just showed him all the work that he still needed to do and as it came to a close, he was ready for more and what the future held for him, after he did his campus job of course. As Yuno entered the changing room and began to change back to his school uniform, he wondered how Asta's battle trial had gone and what his Grimm Studies lesson had been like. It couldn't have been that interesting, it's not like Asta had caused anything of note in the but this was Asta, so he'd be getting stronger. So would Yuno as they both continued their rivalry to see who would become the Wizard King.
Well, there it is, a look at Class B's battle trial for fun. It's a long one but I wanted to keep it in one chapter so as to not distract from the main story that will focus on Class A but to also show some of Class B's growth and development as more will be seen in time though probably not again until the rescue race training episode. For anyone wondering how I determined the teams for Class B when there was no canon material, as well as opponents, I used a random number generator with each student's seat number for them and started with the partners for Oscar and Shinso (yes, that outfit is Shinso's actual hero costume that he wears in the final arc which should debut in season 7 of the anime) and as they were going to face each other it made sense to start with them. Then I did the pair to face Yuno's team. After that it was pure random, and the outcomes determined by how I felt the students would work together at this juncture as well as the Quirks and mentalities at play. Also, this isn't really relevant other than maybe making a similarly sounding reference (which I'll do a bit for other cases as well) at some point but I do find it amusing how Shiozaki and Mimosa share and English VA and have similar skills in their respective franchises though of course different personalities. Lastly, just in case people are wondering or confused, while 9/10 I will use dub terms or styles in my work as that is how I watch anime and get into these series (well for MHA and Black Clover as RWBY isn't an anime and it's original language is English) there is one exception to this rule and that is Kuroiro's Quirk and hero name. In the manga and sub his Quirk is called Black and his hero name Vantablack and I will be using those for him (in part actually because I first learned them from the manga not anime) because they work better for him than the dub which is Dark and Vantadark, respectively. For all other things, mainly revolving around Black Clover where there is differences, I'll be using dub terms only. Anyway, that is all I have for you so I will end this long chapter off here. If you like this story please follow, favorite (this story and me) to keep up with it and leave a review or PM, your support is what helps motivate me to keep up this work and any questions posed before the next chapter is uploaded I will try to answer. Until next time.
