Here is the twenty-ninth chapter in this series released in keeping with my self-imposed upload schedule for this series. The Sports Festival has entered its final event, a one on one fighting tournament so the 32 remaining students have 5 rounds to battle through to win the Sports Festival which means that it is time for the first of those rounds as those 32 are whittled down to 16. That is all the administrative stuff I have and while there are no questions that need answers there are three guest reviews to respond to which I will do now. Do keep the reviews and PMs coming as I always like hearing how much y'all are enjoying my work.
To Nathan Ramos (guest), thank you for your review and support. Nero did her best but this is something Momo had to learn the hard way though she should be wise to that little gremlin's schemes now. The combat starts now so do enjoy 16 fun battles. As for your question, it depends. I have already begun to think on how to adapt the Black Clover movie to this crossover either as a stand alone story or as part of the main series though where it would fit has yet to be determined. There are some things to work out of course though some like having Edward alive aren't an issue but reincarnating Princia and Jester are the big things as well as how Elsdocia would work with Quirks not magic but I've got some ideas already. As for the MHA films, those will likely be their own respective stories. The first and third films at least fit within the timeline pretty well so if I wanted to I could add them to the main story but I feel like they'd just digress from the main story and so having their own stories would be better. Same for the second film which is harder to fit into the timeline due to various factors (mainly the fact that it seems to occur before Bakugo and Todoroki get their provisional licenses yet they work as if they have them). While RWBY doesn't have films they do have two books that could provide material for adaptation into separate stories (Neo's book is a prequel so doesn't work) so there is a lot of avenues. Right now I'd say that only the events of the Black Clover movie could work within the main series but doing the other films, maybe mixing in some things to them from the other franchises if possible that are non-canon like the Devil Worshipers, but there are possibilities. I'll know more if its possible by the end of the year as my other MHA crossover story, 'Miraculous Quirks' is about to go on an indefinite hiatus when I catch up to the anime in it and as such will start work on adapting the first film into that crossover so I'll understand more how that kind of adaptation works. I hope that answers your question and do keep reading and enjoying my work.
To Guest (guest), thank you for your review and support. The set up has to be good to whet the appetite for what is to come so glad to see it worked. Yup, the little pervert got some of what's coming to him but he won't learn as there's going to be a few more incidents so the girls will have to start getting creative until Mina goes full Clockwork Orange on him (still one of the best western culture references in MHA I feel). Julius was have a great time but alas when avoiding your duties it's not a good idea to go straight to where you can be located and reminded of your work. The movie was good and I'm working on figuring out how to incorporate it more, if for nothing else it adds another potential side story to this series coupled with the 3 MHA films and maybe some drawing from the two RWBY books for at least villainous characters. My main hurdle is the reincarnation but I've got some ideas there. Do keep reading and enjoying my work.
To Guest (guest who left a review in Spanish), to answer your question, no this is not set in Remnant. I'm not sure what gave you that impression and I'm sorry for any confusion but this story is entirely within the MHA universe and timeline.
That is it for this pre-chapter note which means that it now officially time to sit back and enjoy the twenty-ninth chapter in Black RWBY Academia.
Disclaimer: I own nothing related to these three great franchises.
Chapter 29: 32 to 16
"Alright sports fans, the time is here at last!" Present Mic said as the crowd, now seated after the break, let out a roar of approval at it. "Let me hear that you are ready?"
At that the crowd cheered even louder as Cementoss added the final touches to the arena for the one on one battles to come. When that was done he used the remaining cement to create a chair for himself at the halfway point as he was to be in charge of student safety for the coming one on one battles that would end the first years' Sports Festival.
32 students, 31 from the Hero Course and one Support Course student, were about to duke it out in a single elimination tournament to see who'd win the Sports Festival for the first years so the crowd was pumped and ready for what was to come especially after all the excitement that they'd already witnessed in the first two events. Natural, Present Mic wasn't done hyping them up.
"We've seen so much action already through our first two events that both culminating in shocking endings we didn't see coming but now it's finally time for the real battles to begin!" Present Mic said. "Can you feel it? The air is thick with excitement for what is to come."
"This is the moment that really defines who a hero is." Oobleck added as Izuku stood in the entrance area he'd been assigned ready for his first match knowing the weight that was on his shoulders after a final chat with All Might during the break. "There will be times when heroes, even those in the Huntsman and Quirk Knight branches, must work alone with only themselves and their skills to fall back on to survive. This is where it all gets shown at an early age."
"Yes today we will see all the virtues needed for such a hero." Port said. "Heart, skill, strength, wisdom, courage, all of these things will be on display and to win this bracket all must be shown."
"That is true, to get to the top you must display everything." Present Mic said as Izuku took a moment to really set himself as the braziers at the corners of the lower platform below the actual battlefield flared to life with flames and Izuku knew that this was his cue to walk towards the battlefield. "And now it is at long last time, no need to delay the finals any longer, it's time for the really good stuff. So let us welcome our first fighters!"
That was it and Izuku walked out of his side as the jumbotron showed his photo taken for the Sports Festival which wasn't flattering at all, in fact it showed him being really nervous which was accurate right now, but he pushed his nerves down as he made his way up while Present Mic introduced him and Aoyama who was walking out from the entrance at the opposite side of the field. Izuku had a serious look on his face as he walked over the grass to the steps up to the battlefield.
"And a quick explanation of the simple rules that we have for this event before we start." Present Mic said as Izuku and Aoyama climbed the steps and walked onto the battlefield as Present Mic spoke. "To win you need to either immobilize your opponent as determined by Midnight, knock them unconscious, or force them out of the ring which is helpfully marked by white lines."
The crowd cheered at this and Izuku listened closely as he climbed the second set of steps to the battlefield. The rules were simple enough but having a good idea of them would be key in assessing his tactics and how he would beat Aoyama without using One for All as he was still unsure if he could use it without breaking his bones.
He'd even spoken about his concerns with All Might briefly a moment ago as he got ready to come out as his mentor had come to let him know that he was doing a good job and discuss how Izuku had used One for All in the Cavalry Battle. Izuku had pointed out that it wasn't really the case and that he still didn't have control over it, that despite all his training his body was still too weak to properly handle it at 100%.
All Might had agreed with that, Izuku's current strength could only handle about 5% in his estimation which surprised Izuku and made him a little depressed as he realized that he'd only gotten by so far thanks to a mixture of luck and his friends. That had led to All Might hitting him in the head and neck and telling him off for that because all he wanted to hear from Izuku was that Izuku would do his best in the Sports Festival. According to him there was no such thing as luck and Izuku wouldn't be the hero he wanted to be if he believed in that.
That got to Izuku and the final words of encouragement from All Might, said in his powered up form, struck home and allowed Izuku to smile. He was ready for it and as he reached the top of the stairs and looked out over the battlefield he knew that he could win this and advance to the next round of the final tournament.
"In addition, you can force the other person to surrender and give up the match by making them cry uncle." Present Mic continued talking over the roaring crowds as Izuku and Aoyama entered the ring, Izuku's mind now clear and ready for what was to come. "And don't worry, you can go as hard as you like so long as you don't intend to kill the other person, as determined by our safety official Cementoss, because we've got Recovery Girl on standby with at least one student healer assisting her so bring on the injuries because we've got you covered. Play dirty and go all out within the bounds of what real heroes do because we use our powers to throw villains in jail, not kill them."
"Ready to lose Midoriya." Aoyama said striking a pose when he came to a stop at the designated starting points for the students, though there was no line to delineate them, and the sounds of the crowd faded from the boys as they got ready for the battle. "Because I am going to win zis mon ami."
"No, I'm ready for you Aoyama." Izuku said and he already had his plan to win this now solidly in mind. "I can't afford to lose."
"Ready?" Present Mic said interrupting anymore trash talk. "Begin!"
The moment Present Mic said that Aoyama attacked with a strong blast for his Navel Laser. Izuku was more than ready for that though and dove forward and to the side, rolling on the ground as he did to make sure that he began to get closer to Aoyama before popping up and running forward as Aoyama repositioned himself for his next shot. His plan for Aoyama was simple, avoid the Naval Laser until Aoyama hit his limit and then use that backlash to get in close and beat Aoyama with non-enhanced physical strength.
Izuku studied his classmates and their Quirks as much as possible and had added what he'd learned about them to his notebook. Over the course of the semester so far he'd noted that while Aoyama had a powerful blast attack with Navel Laser he'd never used it for more than a few moments at a time before taking a break so Izuku had deduced that Aoyama couldn't maintain it for long. Likely the nature of a Quirk like that came with some backlash so the more he used it the more it hurt him, which would also explain why he was wearing a belt that he was wearing right now.
That belt had been the thing that had really tipped Izuku off as he dove to the side, still running forward and evading another blast creating a rough zigzag as he ran forward, to Aoyama having a limitation. He knew that Hero Course students needed special permission that required paperwork to be submitted to have a support item in the Sports Festival and that permission required proof of need for said support item.
The two most likely excuses were to improve established Quirk control issues that could be serious, Izuku knew that Silva had her item on her for the Sports Festival which confirmed that theory to him given her established control issues, or that overuse of your Quirk had a painful backlash requiring support. Of course Izuku was both but no item could help him that he could think of but if Aoyama had an item then it had to be one of those two reasons.
All that added together with what Izuku had seen of Aoyama's accuracy with his Navel Laser had led to his conclusion that the reason for the item was due to discomfort after overuse, which was right but the only person Aoyama had told about it was Ashido after their race in the Quirk Assessment test. Izuku had correctly assessed the situation so he Izuku had to do was evade until he was proven right and Aoyama hit the limit he could handle. Then he could use his physical strength to win without having to use One for All.
Fortunately for Izuku, that limit didn't take long to hit as Aoyama used longer and longer blasts after the first two misses as he tried desperately to end the battle before he hit that limit but only managed two more, both of which missed, before he hit that limit. They were strong blasts though as one did force Izuku to fully hit the deck to let it pass over him, but by then Aoyama was clearly struggling with tummy pain.
It was clear on Aoyama's face as his legs shook and he wobbled as Izuku looked up from the ground following his latest dodge. Izuku knew that that was a look of pain and as such was his cue. With all his current training, he leapt up and forward from the ground and charged forward as Aoyama had no more energy to give lest he cause an issue so Izuku closed the final few feet, got low and slammed his shoulder into Aoyama's gut where the belt was over his navel.
The force of the blow winded Aoyama and caused him to almost vomit and crap himself at the same time, as he bent over Izuku's shoulder. Izuku had gone for the shot there simply because it was clearly a weak spot and while he didn't like doing this to his classmate he wouldn't if this was a real situation and he had to if he wanted to win so he wouldn't hold back in the Sports Festival.
However, the blow was just the first part as he reached his arms around Aoyama's legs and picked him up in a carry over his shoulder right after hitting Aoyama so he never broke stride and ran to the edge of the battlefield while carrying Aoyama. Only when he was near the edge did Izuku come to a halt and toss Aoyama off his shoulder and out of the ring where Aoyama landed on his back with a thud but he was already past his limit so he just lay there with white eyes and arms spread on the concrete.
"Aoyama is out of the ring." Midnight declared with a crack of her flail. "Midoriya is the winner."
Izuku just knelt down to offer Aoyama his hand and help him up but Aoyama was clearly in too much pain so the robots were called out to take him to the infirmary as the crowd cheered at the match. As this was happening the commentators commentated on the battle though it hadn't been that interesting while Aizawa pointed out Izuku's strategy worked well and took into account a limit Aoyama had to win it.
All that didn't matter to Izuku though, he was just glad he'd advanced and waited to make sure that Aoyama was loaded onto the stretcher and taken to the infirmary before he turned and left the battlefield. One match down and Izuku was moving on, he'd face the winner of Ojiro v. Shinso so he wanted to get back to watch it, and the other matches, closely from Class A's box as the first round of the final event began in earnest.
"Damn, Midoriya's a lot stronger than I realized." Asta said with a grin as the match ended. "And he wasn't using his Quirk there so that's some serious core strength."
"You can tell?" Noelle asked from next to him, she had quickly sat next to Asta though no one was going to stop her. "How?"
"There wasn't any of that strange powerup that occurs when he uses his Quirk and it's clear he's not broken any bones." Asta said simply. "He just avoided Aoyama's belly button beam and closed in as he did before using raw strength to win it. He's got to have some decent muscles under his clothes. Not like mine of course but he clearly knows strength training."
"Deku's amazing." Ochaco said ignoring a scoffing sound from Bakugo at that. "I had no doubts that he'd win with or without his Quirk. I'm just surprised that Aoyama faltered there. I figured with his Quirk he'd have a better time but it looked like he was hurting at the end and I don't know why."
"Oh I do." Ashido said helpfully. "When Aoyama uses his Quirk too much it hurts his tummy. It's good in short bursts but that's it. By the end of that he was blasting too hard and Midoriya used that to close in. I'm not sure if Midoriya knew beforehand, deduced during, or got lucky though."
"Huh, interesting." Ochaco said. "No doubt Deku knew that, or at least suspected it, and that's why he evaded until the time and went for a gut blow. He's really good at this analysis stuff."
"Yeah seriously." Asta said grinning. "I bet I can learn some battle tactics from him and clearly he works out so I can give him some tips there as I've built my muscles all myself. I could use a gym buddy."
"Count me in as well Asta." Kirishima said. "That's real manly stuff, I could go for a workout buddy. Strength and damage helps build my Quirk as well."
"Definitely." Asta said looking at Kirishima. "We can have full gym session and help each other get stronger."
"Can you bro out some other time." Weiss said as the boys got louder about working out. "There are matches to watch."
"I agree though that might be a good idea for them." Nero said from Asta's other side, another thing than angered Mineta now that he could see again as Asta had his two girls on either side of him and he still didn't get what Asta had that drew such cuties to him. "It seems that Midoriya's Quirk is too strong for his body at the moment so if his body was stronger he'd be able to handle it better."
"I'm surprised you can assess that so well." Ruby said looking at Nero. "Is that what's holding him back?"
"I know Quirks well; an old friend was a little obsessed with them and how they could be used to make society better if properly harnessed via support items." Nero said vaguely as Aoyama was stretched off the field. "He's the one who showed me that my Quirk was better than I thought it was. He also taught me about Quirk limits and how to better prepare your body for them as there will be Quirks that bodies can't hold well. We just saw two in action in that first match."
"Interesting." Weiss said as another piece of info about Nero's past that made no real sense but the way the girl said it showed that it was true so Weiss added that to her growing puzzle of who Nero was. "Well…"
"That match was just an intraclass matchup but the next one is the first of the many matchups between our classes." A voice said and they all turned to see a plain looking boy with blond hair pop his head up from the other side of the partition between the boxes that had the classes in them. "And we're going to win the first one, along with all the others of course, and show that we're better than you lot."
"Sorry, who are you?" Asta asked bluntly though Noelle was a little confused as to why he sounded a bit like Leo for some reason, well a more unstable version of Leo but still like Leo. "I don't think we've met."
"I'm Neito Monoma from Class 1-B, the guy who your traitor teammate took his headband from in the Cavalry Battle, and the one who planned how we're going to beat you." Monoma said with a laugh. "So you'd better watch it. Shinso is one of our two best combatants I'd say. He may not seem it but he's probably the scariest in our class, you're going to lose this one the moment it starts it."
"Ojiro's got this." Asta said defensively getting into it and defending his class as the commentary for the next match began. "You'll see."
"There's no…" Monoma said before his eyes went wide and he slid down the wall out of view and an attractive girl with orange hair in an off center ponytail and teal poked her head over the edge. "Sorry for Monoma, he can be a handful when it comes to class pride so don't worry about it. Name's Kendo by the way, I hope we can all be friends despite him. Anyway, best of luck in the match."
"Kendo…" Monoma's voice groaned from the other side causing Kendo to disappear from view and Class 1-A to blink as whatever was being said was cut off.
It looked like there was a ringleader to the rivalry and it wasn't that loudmouth that had first yelled at them. Asta was sure he'd heard that name before but he wasn't sure where, well he'd figure that out later as the next match was about to start and he settled in to watch it and support Ojiro in it.
"Alright folks, after that exciting first battle it's time to see if the second will top it!" Present Mic said excitedly as the crowd cheered and Ojiro and Shinso walked out of the wings. "Facing off in this match is, from Class 1-A in the Hero Course, the man with a prehensile tail, Mashirao Ojiro and also from the Hero Course but Class 1-B, the mysterious Hitoshi Shinso. This is going to be an interesting match for you Eraser as it pits one of your student against the kid who got in on your recommendation."
"I merely provided Shinso with the recommendation as he had potential but wouldn't have passed the normal exam, he earned his spot in U.A.'s Hero Course on his own." Aizawa said as the boys began to climb the stairs. "I will not be playing any favorites in this or any of the matches."
"A wise choice but this should be a good match." Oobleck said. "Shinso showed how skilled he was in the Cavalry Battle, as well as how he can use it in conjunction with a team, but if Ojiro can avoid it then, well, that tail is really useful in close combat."
"It will be good to see for sure." Port added as the boys came to a halt. "If Ojiro can avoid Shinso's Quirk then we'll really see what Shinso can do without that support item he uses. Think of it like a Huntsman without his weapon only Shinso is likely destined for the normal hero ranks."
Ojiro didn't need to say any words for this as he looked at his indigo haired opponent, he was ready for it and what was to come. He had no clue what Quirk Shinso had, he'd not even seen the boy in the last event but his team had won it with a shocker at the end, so he had to be careful as he was clearly skilled with a Quirk strong enough to get in on recommendations.
That was the fact that really made Ojiro take Shinso seriously as they squared off waiting for the match to start. He would also remember how quickly he'd lost to Todoroki in the battle trial, it had forced him to adjust and train harder, so he knew better than most not to underestimated a recommended student. Rose had reinforced that belief in the last round with her tactics in forming the team, though the general plan had been Schnee's, but it was thanks the Huntress girls that he was here at all so he wasn't going to waste it.
For his part Shinso kept a neutral expression as he looked at the plain kid with a tail across from him. This would only work this time as his secret would be out afterwards so it would take an idiot to respond to him but that was why he had a support item for the field that ensured he could fully use his Quirk when facing villains, plus he'd hit Todoroki earlier so he was doing well.
That just meant that a win in this battle would increase his proof that he earned his spot and hopefully the next person was an idiot he could brainwash as well and thus progress further into the tournament. Thankfully the teachers had given him an opportunity to use it at the start so Shinso knew he'd already won this before it started.
"Alright are you ready?" Present Mic said as the crowd roared. "Begin!"
"Bet you want to know what I did to get that recommendation, don't you?" Shinso said simply as Ojiro charged, he only had close combat skills so he was going to use them hard and fast, his tail raising to slap the ground and increase his speed and get to Shinso faster. "Go on, ask me what I did to get into U.A. via recommendations."
"I don't care, you're…" Ojiro began as he tail came down but before it could hit the ground Shinso activated Brainwashing as Ojiro responded to him and the came to a sudden, almost jarring, halt as his tail flopped limply to the ground.
"Too easy." Shinso said as a smirk formed on his face. "Now turn around and walk out of the ring."
The crowd had gasped at Ojiro's sudden stopping but the moment he turned and did as commanded it really shocked them. Ojiro was just walking at a slow, methodical, pace towards the stairs he'd climbed up, a blank look on his face and tail dragging on the ground behind him as he walked.
"What is going on?" Present Mic said as Ojiro walked. "Is Ojiro going to walk himself out of the ring?"
"Unless he can break it he will and so far I've never seen anyone break the hold without physical contact or Shinso ending his Quirk voluntarily." Aizawa said simply as the crowd began to mutter at what they were seeing. "This is the reason why he earned my recommendation and why I set up the process for giving out a recommendation in the first place. There are Quirks out there that can't be tested by our normal exam for various reasons but are still hero grade Quirks and Shinso's is one of them. As such I got permission to recommend one student each year who fit that criteria and then showed me that they were worthy of it. Course he had to get in on his own via the recommended exam but he did and we're seeing why."
"Yes, Brainwashing, a powerful Quirk indeed and one limited as it only works on humans so robots aren't affected hence why he would have failed the normal entrance exam even with a Quirk that is great for defeating villains, especially powerful ones who talk a lot." Oobleck said as Ojiro got nearer the edge while Shinso didn't move at all. "If you'd not set this up Eraser then he'd be forced to go into General Studies and then see if he could transfer from there which isn't easy."
"A rather ingenious idea." Port said as Ojiro reached the edge and walked out. "And there it is, just as we expected the moment that Ojiro fell for Shinso's Quirk."
"Ojiro has left the ring." Midnight declared with a crack of her flail and Shinso ended the brainwashing causing Ojiro to come to and blink in utter confusion before realizing he was out and had been beaten without any effort so he just continued to walk out humiliated, dejected and tail still dragging but realizing that Shinso truly earned that recommendation because he'd just destroyed Ojiro without moving an inch. "Shinso is the winner."
Shinso just nodded and turned to leave as the commentators continued their discussion of his Quirk and potential as a hero while he walked out to the cheering from his classmates. He didn't care so much for Monoma's antics but he'd won and advanced which was good so he may as well have some class pride in the process, especially because he wasn't sure that most of his class could advance against who they were facing from Class 1-A.
That was for them to worry about though, Shinso was focused on his next opponent which was that Midoriya kid. Hopefully he wasn't smart enough to not talk though Shinso wasn't going to take it lightly as he had no idea what to expect from that as the kid hadn't shown his Quirk.
Well, that wouldn't matter, so long as he was dumb enough to respond to Shinso then Shinso had won as no one had ever broken free of his brainwashing without physical contact or his own ending of the Quirk's effect. Even with the cat out of the bag about his Quirk, Shinso had this and he believed that as he left the field to return to his class and watch the rest of the matches in the first round of the final event.
"That, that was strange." Asta said his eyes wide as everyone nodded at that following the decisive victory that Shinso had had over Ojiro who looked really down after such a complete loss. "He brainwashed Ojiro? How does that work?"
"That's what the commentators said." Noelle said a little uneasy about it herself. "I don't know how it works but damn, that is one powerful Quirk. It's no wonder that he got in on recommendations."
"There's likely some kind of trigger for it." Nero said thinking on it. "But what I can't say as it was so quick that I didn't get enough data to make an assessment of it."
"Deku had better be careful." Ochaco said as she looked to the entrance to the box, he'd not returned yet which meant he'd missed it that was how quick Shinso's win had been. "We'd better tell him."
"We will but Ojiro should be the one to do it." Weiss said. "He'll know more than we do having faced it and can help out. That was bad though, we lost right away, that wasn't a battle at all."
"Ha, told you that that was going to happen." Monoma said popping his head up again in what looked like it would be a routine thing during the first round at least given how many interclass matchups there were. "I told you that Shinso's a recommended student and he's scary as hell and now you know that. Despite all that he really wants to prove that his Quirk is a hero grade Quirk and not a villainous one, I get that better than most given my own Quirk so we're kindred spirits in a way, and he's going to really show it off now. You lot don't know what you're in for with him."
"It's a good Quirk." Nero said thinking on what she'd just seen and not realizing that she had one of the best counters for Brainwashing. "But once it's figured out it will be easy to counter it. All we need to do is deduce how it works and then avoid doing whatever allows Shinso to activate it. I bet it's something simple that can easily be dealt with once you know. The way it caught Ojiro off right at the start seems to imply that that's the case."
"You won't realize until it's too late." Monoma taunted. "Along with Yuno, Shinso's our best bet to win the Sports Festival so they are likely to meet in the final but I wouldn't don't count out the likes of Pine and Komori either as both are dangerous in their own way. You jerks don't…"
"Be nice Monoma." Kendo said as he fell back again the same way as before and Kendo popped up again to apologize for her classmate. "Sorry, this may be routine."
"It's fine." Ruby said. "Don't worry, we lost this one but next time we'll win because it's Weiss and I know she'll beat that Setsuna girl."
"Setsuna's no slouch so good luck there." Kendo said while Nero wished Weiss was here and not down in the waiting room having left after Midoriya's match to get ready because she was sure that the upper class would have blushed at that as the next combatants, Todoroki and Sero were introduced. "See you then I guess as I'm sure Monoma will be back for it."
At that Kendo went back to her side to no doubt admonish Monoma again and Class A settled back for another matchup between classmates. There was little doubt who'd win this one but it was still going to be worth watching just in case there was a surprise as Todoroki and Sero climbed the stairs to the battlefield for the third match of the first round.
There was no surprise, the third match was over almost as soon as it began. There wasn't even much to say about it, not that anyone was under any illusions that it would be competitive but there had always been an off chance.
Sero was good an all, his Quirk was a strong capture one that had been key in getting him into U.A. and he had solid reaction time so that when Present Mic began the match he was able to quickly wrap Todoroki's arms in tape to bind them to his sides and haul him, still attached to the tape, to the side of the ring to try and get him out as swiftly as possible. It was a good strategy and it would have worked against a good portion of the students but Todoroki could emit his Quirk from anywhere on his body with the only factor being the side he used so he simply used his ice to break free and counter attack.
That counterattack though was intense and well beyond what he needed to do. It was as if he wanted to guarantee victory, which he did as Todoroki knew two victories would pit him against Midoriya if Midoriya won as well, and so far he had won his first match, so he had to win and advance as well if he wanted to face Midoriya in the quarterfinals. As such he went a little overboard with a massive, jagged, wall of ice engulfed Sero and trapped him within it but which also froze half the stadium and was so large that it stuck out of the top. It was, to put simply, total overkill.
Aizawa noted that it was a too much, as if Todoroki had lost control, while Sero conceded because he was fully immobilized while the other commentators shivered and noted that Todoroki had gone overboard with his Quirk. Even Todoroki seemed to notice it as he walked up to the ice and placed his left hand on it to thaw it out and free a very cold Sero from it. As all this was happening a chant of 'nice try' came from the crowd for Sero as a slight pause began before the next match as there was a lot of ice to clear.
"Well that was anticlimactic." Asta said as the ice was slowly cleared from the battlefield and stands. "I thought that there might be more to it but the moment Todoroki used his ice it was over."
"Not really, Todoroki had that from the start." Izuku said having rejoined their little group just before the start of the match. "Sero's tape is good and strong, so long as he wraps you up in it he's got the advantage against most of the class what with his range and capture skills but Todoroki's ice and fire can be produced from anywhere. Both can break tape so it was his match to lose though he did go overboard at the end."
"I'd say." Noelle said. "That was too much and a hero should know the right amount of power to use in a situation."
"True though it did show his power." Nero said. "We've said that in the class only Todoroki can match your raw power, Noelle, and he just showed it there. Course he has more control over his Quirk at the moment but you might still have the power on him."
"Yeah and once you fully get control over yours I know you'll be able to control that much water." Asta said causing Noelle to flush at Asta's praise. "Probably more actually. You're going to be a real powerhouse Noelle."
"Well I'm still a ways off but I'll get there." Noelle said blushing and not looking at Asta. "But thanks, I'll do my best to get full control over Hydromancy."
"I'm just wondering how long this will last." Ruby said as the ice slowly melted. "Weiss is next and I can't wait to see her win."
"Probably a fair bit." Izuku said as Sero was freed and helped off while Todoroki continued to melt the ice he'd made. "That's a lot of ice."
"Well she's already in the waiting room so please be quick." Ruby said. "She's going to win and then she'll face Todoroki, that will be interesting because she can handle this ice."
"Oh I don't think your heiress will win." Monoma suddenly said popping his head up and over the wall between the classes once more to trash talk now that another interclass matchup was coming up. "Tokage is cool and dangerous, she's one of our recommended students so…"
"Sorry for him." Kendo said as she popped up having dragged Monoma back but he kept complaining at how quickly she'd stopped him from telling Class 1-A how inferior they were until she chopped him in the neck while looking at them. "Good luck to you lot as well, this will be a good match, I know it."
"That it will be." Nero said as Kendo dropped back down to her class. "Plus I have no idea what Tokage's Quirk is other than that it is something worthy of recommendations so it's got to be good even if Weiss would have gotten in on recommendations if she'd been able to go down that route as well."
"We should have asked Mimosa but as we didn't go after their team she didn't say." Noelle noted. "I think she mentioned it's name and that it could be a nuisance but that's it."
"That just means that this will be really interesting then." Izuku said as he flipped his notebook to a new page in his Class 1-B section, currently empty as Izuku had missed the first battle so he started his first entry for it with this Tokage girl. "I wonder what she'll have. She's recommended so it's got to be good but as Nero noted, Schnee is on par with a recommended student, she'd just not one because she's at U.A. not Shiketsu so let's see. Depending on…"
With that Izuku devolved into a mumbling storm and they all decided that it was best to just leave him be and refocused on the upcoming match. The ice was still being cleared, there was a lot of it, so they had time but one thing was certain, they all wanted Weiss to win it and if she did, well a match between her and Todoroki would be in the next round and no one knew how something like that would go.
"Alright, the field has been cleared of all that ice so it's time for our third match of the day and boy do we have a good one for you with two beautiful and deadly ladies." Present Mic said as Weiss and Tokage walked out of the entrances and towards the steps having finally been able to start the battle. "From the Hero Course Class 1-B, she got in on recommendations, it's the slippery Setsuna Tokage and also from the Hero Course but Class 1-A, she did not get in on recommendations despite her name and yes this is the genuine article that we have at U.A., it's the heiress to one of the largest companies in the world, Weiss Schnee!"
As expected that got a lot of cheers and noise but Weiss just ignored it as she headed to the battlefield. She'd dealt with that all her life so she could easily ignore it. She was here to show that she belonged at U.A., that she was capable, a future Huntress, and above all else she could do this on her own and it all started with giving her all to win the U.A. Sports Festival.
"Folks, I can confirm that she's the first Schnee not to attend Shiketsu." Present Mic continued and Weiss just rolled her eyes as she began to climb the stairs. "So she's gone against family tradition to attend U.A., likely why she's not a recommended student, but to top it all off she's not the only one in her year to defy familial connections and come here as the first of a prestigious family to attend this school. More on that later though as that other person's fighting in a bit."
"Was that necessary?" Aizawa asked. "My student is not different from any other."
"Perhaps but it is certainly noteworthy that Miss Schnee here did buck her family's trend by coming to U.A." Oobleck said. "And she's in the Huntress track so this will be an interesting match for her to see if she can fight without her weapon at hand."
"It is always interesting seeing how the Huntsmen and Huntresses who favor weapons over Quirks do in the Sports Festival where Quirk usage is more important rather than supplemental as they're used to." Port said as Weiss and Tokage, who she noted was an attractive girl with shoulder length, dark green hair and matching eyes, reached the tops of their respective stairs and walked onto the battlefield. "Some like Miss Xiao Long are good without them but others like Miss Nikos aren't so where will Miss Schnee stack up in comparison to some of our current top Huntresses I wonder?"
"So the heiress herself graces me with her presence." Tokage said smiling and showing sharp teeth as she and Weiss came to a halt as the commentary continued for a moment and she looked Weiss up and down. "Gotta say, I'm surprised an icy beauty like yourself didn't get in on recommendations what with your familial name and money. You could have gotten them easy and that's not factoring in the stories I've heard of your family's uniquely hereditary Quirk."
"I had to earn my way here the normal way if I wished to attend the school and course of my own desire so I was more than happy to apply and take the normal entrance exam." Weiss said simply noting that Tokage was only a few inches taller than her. "I see you got in on recommendations. I've learned that that could mean anything and to not presume based on appearance or personality but I'm not the same brat I was when I started and I messed up on that front. Rest assured that I won't take you lightly."
"Smart as well, I'd expect that." Tokage said unphased by what Weiss had said. "You're the whole package I see, seeing as you're rich, smart, and stunning. Hell, that scar adds to your alure as it gives you a certain mystique as well as humanizing you somewhat kinda like Todoroki's in fact. You ever thought about switching teams?"
"Come again?" Weiss asked a little confused at what Tokage was saying before it clicked and she added. "Are, are you hitting on me?"
"Just gauging interest, well are you?" Tokage asked giving Weiss a sharp toothed grin. "Interested that is cos I'd be more than interested in seeing if I like the same side if you're the one I'm trying it with."
"Er…" Weiss said not sure what to say as this was something that was actually confusing her outside of this match given certain things but she pushed that down, especially because it involved Ruby, and decided to just question it as she may get some understanding from Tokage on this front if she was into the same gender. "You're into girls then?"
"Not sure which team I play for but I'm willing to experiment to see where I bat be it right, left, or switch." Tokage said still grinning. "If you're confused and wish to experiment though I'm definitely down."
"Pass." Weiss said though it took all her self-control to not think of what 'experimenting' with a certain raven haired girl with red tips would constitute. "I'm going to be a Huntress; I don't have time for romance."
"Alright enough banter." Present Mic said interrupting the chatter. "Begin!"
Immediately Tokage attacked by releasing her hands at the wrists and sending them at Weiss clenching her fists in the process. It took Weiss a moment to realize what Tokage had done but as soon as she did she erected a glyph in their way but Tokage moved them around the glyph and opened her hands to go for a grab instead. Interesting, it seemed that Tokage could break apart her body, or at least parts of it, and control it, a useful Quirk to have and if used right, which given that Tokage was a recommended student Weiss didn't doubt that, it would be tough one to face.
Still, Weiss quickly came up with a plan to handle it, she just needed to see a few other things first as she erected two glyphs on either side of her right before the hands could reach her causing them to slam palms first into the glyphs and bounce off before flying around for another attack. That was the first test done, the pieces that Tokage detached could take a bit of damage and still be useful. That was good to know but there were a few more tests to conduct before Weiss enacted her plan as the girls continued to not move and Tokage's hands came around for their next attack.
This time, however, rather than activate her glyphs as just a shield to protect her, she created 5 smaller glyphs the moment Tokage's hands bounced off her shield glyphs to capture the hands in crude boxes of circular glyphs. They weren't perfect and Tokage could escape them if she broke apart her hands as there were small openings at the points that the glyphs met but Weiss figured that would take a lot of effort that Tokage wouldn't want to waste.
She was right and rather than do that the Class B girl didn't do anything but dramatically pound on the glyphs with her hands until, after a few moments, her hands fell limp and to the bottom of the glyph boxes. Weiss held them for a moment longer before the hands vanished and a new pair reformed on Tokage. That confirmed two things, the first that there was a limit to how long part of Tokage's body could be away from whatever her Quirk considered its center, likely her brain, while the second confirmation was that Tokage couldn't regrow her body parts until the ones off her body 'died'.
That was good to know and Weiss doubted that it wasn't taxing to regrow parts of your body rather than return them to it which was another thing to factor in. She had to suppress a smile as Weiss was sure that she had the battle now.
"I get your Quirk." Weiss said as she looked at Tokage across the ring from her. "You break your body up and can control it as if it was still part of you while it flies through the air, likely in unique ways depending on what you break off. I don't know how much you can control at once but clearly they can take a bit of damage but they can't be away for too long or else you lose control over them and the pieces, for lack of a better word, die and then you can reform those pieces on your body. It's a good Quirk and it makes you very mobile, great for scouting, while also prevents dismemberment as you can do that yourself."
"Figured me out already Schnee, I'd expect no less." Tokage said grinning at her. "But what are you going to do about it now that you know what I can do" Can you beat me with just your glyphs? This isn't training, you can't use a weapon like most of you Huntresses use so it's all about Quirk and unarmed combat now."
"I don't need my sword because all I have to do to beat you is this." Wiess said as she created two glyphs under Tokage's arms right next to her body and grew them so that they would hit her armpits. "Instincts, they're useful but can be used against a person."
Tokage frowned at that not sure what Weiss was getting at as she detached her arms as the shoulders so that the expanding glyphs shot harmlessly through her sleeves rather than hitting her. However, the moment they did Weiss instantly created more glyphs to box Tokage's arms in them while simultaneously creating another two glyphs, one between Tokage's knees and the other right in front of her waist and expanded them at the same time trying to hit Tokage with both just like she'd tried with the ones aimed for her armpits.
Again Tokage broke up her body out of instinct to avoid the hits and again Weiss created more glyphs to box the now detached parts of Tokage within the glyphs so that now the only part of Tokage that was free to move was her torso, neck and head. The other girl did just that as she quickly flew high up to get free, showing that she could fly thanks to the nature of her Quirk, and try to use that altitude to reform but before she could she flew into a glyph over her head that knocked her senseless and back down so that she fell back first onto another glyph and was boxed in one last time.
By this point Tokage's body was broken into 6 pieces held in 5 crude glyph boxes and Weiss looked at her without any sign of strain though Weiss would admit to Ruby later that she was starting to near the limits of how many glyphs she could make and control at one time, not that she'd show her opponent that she was straining to hold her. All Weiss needed to do was make it clear to her opponent that she had the upper hand and in that vein she called out to Tokage to get her to yield and give Weiss the win.
"Do you surrender?" Weiss asked glad that the way Tokage had broken up hadn't caused any wardrobe malfunctions for the other girl. "I've got you boxed up and you can't reform well at the moment. If I had to guess the parts not attached to your skull are going to die soon and it's going to be draining to reform them, especially when you're in that box."
"How are you not a recommended student?" Tokage called back from the box with her head and torso in it unable to look at Weiss from the position she was in but able to hear her so she had to ask before she answered Weiss's own question. "This level of precision and control, the training it takes is easily recommended level."
"If I wanted to shun Shiketsu and forge my own path as a Huntress who went to U.A. then I had to get in via the normal exam, which I came second in as you well know." Weiss said. "And besides, don't compare me to the likes of Ruby, she's shown me what it takes to be a recommended student and I'm not at her level, yet. I thought I was when I first met her but my arrogance blinded me and now I work hard to be her equal."
"Oh I get it now, interesting so you do lean that way." Tokage muttered to herself and smirking though Weiss was unable to see it before speaking up so that Weiss could hear her. "Alright Schnee, I'll admit that you got me here. I cry uncle, you win."
"Tokage gives up." Midnight said with a crack of her flail. "Schnee is the winner."
As soon as that was announced Weiss dropped the glyphs and the pieces of Tokage that weren't attached to her head fell dead to the ground as she floated down to lie on her back panting a bit as she began to reform. That did cause a wardrobe malfunction as Weiss blinked when Tokage's pelvis and pubis reformed to reveal just a purple, there was no other word for it than thong, made from some special material and that was it. Weiss was concerned at that and called out.
"Are you going to be ok?" Weiss asked. "You're, um, rather exposed."
"Yeah in a moment, you're right that reforming large parts of my body is tiring." Tokage said clearly not bothered by her sudden display of her taste in panties to the entire stadium and viewers at home though hopefully that was censored. "I'll be fine, the robots will help and once I get my hands back I'll pull my pants on again. Go back to Rose, Schnee, I'm sure she'll be happy at your win and don't worry, it's not your fault that you saw my panties."
Weiss nodded at that as she couldn't really say anything in response, not that Tokage could see or that Weiss could see Tokage's continued smirk, before she turned and walked off the battlefield moving for the first time since the battle had begun as she hurried down the stairs and off it. She'd advanced and was looking forward to Ruby's praise, as well as her sister's of course, but as Weiss walked out she did have tension as she knew who she was up against next. Todoroki was going to be a whole different battle and she had to be fully ready for that when the next round rolled around.
"Woah go Weiss! I knew that you could do it!" Ruby cheered as Weiss won her match with Tokage's submission. "You're amazing and looked so cool there!"
"Schnee certainly did well." Izuku said scribbling in his notebook as he added what he'd seen in the battle to it. "I don't know what Quirk that was she was facing but she gave me a lot of data on what Tokage could do. That was a great match to watch."
"Only you'd see so much in that, Deku." Ochaco said with a smile as Tokage began to reform which led to a quick blinding of Mineta and Kaminari from Tsu and Nero respectively as it became clear that Tokage was about to have a full stadium panty flash. "I'm just glad that Schnee won that battle."
"Weiss was awesome in it; she was so cool and collected." Ruby said really happy now and looking forward to glomping Weiss when she got back. "And we avenged that loss to Class B so we're even now but that won't last long."
"I'm sorry for my loss." Ojiro said though no one held it against him other than himself. "I'll make sure that Midoriya doesn't do the same thing."
"No one knew that kid's Quirk, it was clearly something strong." Noelle said. "And don't worry, Class B is going to be behind us soon because next up is Asta and he won't lose so we've got another win in the bag there."
"Definitely." Nero said with a nod as she returned from sealing Mineta's eyes as well so that Tsu could draw her tongue back in while the class creeps complained that they couldn't see the panties on display though that wouldn't last much longer as the robots reached Tokage and covered her lower half. "That loudmouth doesn't stand a chance against him."
"I don't think so, Tetsutetsu is one of our strongest in terms of power." Monoma said popping up over the divider again which didn't surprise any of them as they'd expected it. "You may have bested Tokage there, impressive as she's a recommended student, but you won't beat Tetsutetsu. He's…"
"Shut it Monoma, you know as well as the rest of us that in a one on one fight, especially against a Quirk like Schnee's, that Setsuna is at a disadvantage as she's not the most combat orientated hero." Kendo said popping up as well to hit Monoma and knock him down once again. "Sorry guys, good luck in the next match."
"We won't need it." Noelle muttered as Kendo dropped down again as Monoma began complaining to her. "Asta's got it."
"No question, that Tetsutetsu guy's got one thing going and all Asta needs is a single hit." Ruby said as Nero unsealed the perverts' eyes now that there was nothing more to see. "We're going to win now where's Weiss; I want to embrace her after that amazing win of hers."
The others weren't sure how to react to that, though Nero was going to find it amusing, so they just settled in to watch Asta's match. With his Quirk, there was no doubt in their minds that they had the next match won already, the only question was how badly hurt would Tetsutetsu be at the end of it.
"A little more extreme than I would have expected but she didn't move the entire time either and that showed great glyph control Weiss." Winter muttered to herself as she assessed Weiss's win over Tokage. "She assessed what that girl could do after just one exchange, analyzed the situation from her assessment, and then made her to use more of her Quirk than necessary allowing Weiss to create those boxes and force the submission. I wouldn't doubt that regenerating your body parts takes a toll so Weiss really did well there though she could have avoided showing us that girls underwear. Good job but next up is Endeavor's son, that will be harder and father will be watching closely. Good luck Weiss, you'll need it."
No one else in the Huntsmen agency box responded to Winter's musing. The three heads were in front chatting with themselves about the battle they'd just watched as it was the first with a Huntress track student and the other two deputies with Winter didn't bother to answer her which she didn't mind, she was talking to herself after all.
Winter was proud of Weiss for advancing to the last 16, she was doing well but the next match would be her toughest one yet and Winter hoped that Weiss was ready for it because it was matches like that that made a Huntress. She couldn't wait to see how Weiss would handle Shoto Todoroki in the next round as she settled in to watch the rest of the first years.
"The battles stop for no one and after a nice, non-arena destroying, match we can quickly move onto the next one in this exhilarating first round!" Present Mic said as Asta walked out a grin on his face ready to face the loudmouth he'd wanted to face for a while now. "And once more this is an inter Hero Class matchup as we see the passionate, manly fighter made of steel that is Tetsutetsu Tetsutetsu of Class 1-B against the rural boy of the north who's on the Quirk Knight track from Class 1-A, Asta! Thoughts boys?"
"This match will be over in a single blow." Aizawa said in a bored tone as Asta walked up the steps to the level of the battlefield at the same time his silver haired opponent did. "That's all I have to say about it."
"Yes I must concur, this will come down to who lands the first hit." Oobleck said as the boys walked onto the battlefield. "A shame Julius is no longer here; he'd have loved it especially seeing as Asta's on the Quirk Knight path."
"True, Asta's Quirk is something else." Port said as Asta and Tetsutestu reached their starting points having been faster to get to them than most had been so far. "After that was made as a result of Asta's Quirk, those of us in the Huntsman branch are also intrigued by him. I'd be surprised if he didn't get offers from all 4 Huntsmen agencies when this is over."
"Seems like you're popular." Tetsutetsu said with a sharp toothed sneer at Asta. "I'll enjoy putting a Class A jerk like you in his place for that and show you that we're just as good as you lot are."
"Keep talking, only Yuno in your class is worth facing in my book, at least as a battle rival." Asta said as he got ready. "But I was hoping to face you and shut that loudmouth of yours."
"Why you cocky…" Tetsutetsu began as his voice got louder but he was cut off by a single word from the commentators' booth.
"Begin!"
At Present Mic's starting word Asta rushed forward and Tetsutetsu roared and did the same a split second later, turning his body to steel in the process. Asta just grinned at that as he ran and leapt into the air when he knew it would work and causing a slightly startled Tetsutetsu, still made of steel, come to a halt with a look of surprise at Asta's odd actions. That stayed as Asta roared and the rend appeared in the air above him and the long handle of his larger sword appeared.
Asta grabbed it with both hands and continued to roar as he yanked it out of the rend before bringing it down with a yell as he came down in one smooth, unbroken, move. Tetsutetsu didn't stand a chance as the edge of the blade slammed into his left shoulder and upper chest instantly dispelling his Quirk and turning him back to normal as well as breaking his collar bone and leaving a shallow cut there. The force was such that even the concrete below them cracked as Asta roared through the blow and drove Tetsutetsu into the ground before landing on it as Tetsutetsu flopped back eyes wide and white out cold.
"Tetsutetsu has been knocked out." Midnight said with a crack of her flail the moment that it was clear that Tetsutetsu wasn't getting up from that hit. "Asta is the winner."
"That shut you up." Asta said with a grin as he hefted his sword onto his shoulder before he turned and walked away with his sword still there for a few moments before he dispelled it as the robots came out to help Tetsutetsu out while the commentators commented on it and the accuracy of Aizawa's assessment. "One step closer to the final, I'll be there waiting for you Yuno."
With that Asta continued off the field and began to head back to his class. He'd won and advanced so he was one step closer to the final where he knew Yuno would be as well. This was the perfect venue for their rivalry to go to the next level as they got the first chance to see how far they'd come since starting at U.A. They just had to reach it first and Asta fully intended to do so.
"Mr. Aizawa was right, that lasted one blow." Izuku said as he made some notes on Tetsutetsu's Steel Quirk as he got a good sense for it from the brief exchange while using Kirishima's Hardening Quirk as a basis for comparison. "All Asta needed was to land the hit and he'd win the battle, which he did."
"Makes sense, for all his dumb meathead nature, Asta's strong and the ability to nullify Quirks with that heavy sword of his, which alone is a strong weapon, can't be overlooked." Noelle said. "He wouldn't lose to something as simple as turning your body to steel. That was more force than I expected though."
"It's Asta, he probably felt that it was needed." Nero said simply. "Best to be safe when dealing with a transformation class Quirk like that anyway so he made the right decision to use a lot of force."
"What mattered was that it worked." Ochaco said. "And we won another win over Class B which is good."
"Right and the next battle is the only all Class B battle." Noelle said looking at the bracket as the battlefield was repaired following Asta's win. "So it's going to be interesting at least but Mimosa's got this."
"That Shiozaki seems similar to her." Weiss said as she got back from her own match, Asta's had been so quick that it had started and ended before she returned to their class's box, and too her seat next to Ruby, Ruby hugging her from the side the moment that she sat down which she smiled at and blushed but continued enjoying Ruby's embrace as she spoke. "But I agree, I don't know the Vermillions as well as the Silvas as they've always been a U.A. family but they're powerful even though she's not got a fire Quirk like the main line of the family has."
"That would be better as it looks like Shiozaki has a plant Quirk as well." Noelle said as the pictures of the girls went up on the jumbotron to hype the match up and it was clear that Shiozaki's hair was vines. "But I have faith in Mimosa, she'll win. Which does mean that she'll face Asta next."
"That will be interesting." Nero said as the field was fixed and the commentary resumed with the Class B girls walking out of their sides. "For now though, let's watch and enjoy a Monoma free moment."
The others nodded, they'd not been bothered by Monoma likely because Class B had lost so decisively in the last battle that he couldn't show his face and now this battle was an intracell match for them had so they just sat back to enjoy the only battle without any of their own class present in it. This was going to be interesting, they all knew it as the two plant Quirk based girls made their way to the battlefield for the coming confrontation.
"It's time for our next match and it's our only Class 1-B matchup as the two beautiful flowers of their class, who both come with thorns, show that this matchup is more than just between classmates but between plant Quirk users." Present Mic announced to the cheering crowd as Mimosa and Shiozaki walked out of their sides and headed to the battlefield. "It's the recommended girl who's the flower of House Vermillion, Mimosa Vermillion, versus the assassin of Class 1-B, Ibara Shiozaki! I'm expecting a flashy battle filled with…"
"Excuse me?" Shiozaki said turning to look at the commentators as Mimosa walked up the steps and onto the battlefield knowing exactly what her classmate was doing, Present' Mic's announcement had been rather off for Shiozaki's character. "Pardon my interruption of your commentary but I do not know what gave you the idea that I am an assassin. I have come to the Sports Festival with nothing but the noblest and purest intentions in my heart as I search for victory, not to kill my opponents. That is not in the lines with the values of a hero good sir, nor is it in line with teachings of our Lord."
"Right, er, sorry." Present Mic said as Mimosa sighed, Shiozaki was taking this a little too literally but that should have been expected knowing her personality. "Didn't mean it."
"I did not come to U.A. for wicked or selfish reasons." Shiozaki continued clearly not hearing Present Mic's apology, or more likely not thinking that it was enough and had more to say, as she held out her hands to the side as if she was on the cross which was poignant with what came next. "I came here to deliver salvation upon others for it is my humble quest to spread true good along with the word of the Lord across this world."
"Alright I said I'm sorry ok." Present Mic said as Shiozaki clasped her hands in prayer before releasing them and smiling up at the commentators. "Can you please got to the battlefield now."
"I thank you for your kind understanding of my pure and true intentions." Shiozaki said with a bow. "And now I shall engage my good friend and classmate in this competition."
"She showed you." Aizawa said with a chuckle. "Try to actually look up our students before making things up for the hype, Mic."
"Shut it Eraser Head." Present Mic said as Shiozaki finally entered the ring to walk to her starting point.
"For a commentator that was dumb." Oobleck said adding onto what Aizawa was saying. "You should know who you're introducing Mic."
"Yes, Shiozaki is a pure heart." Port added. "You should have mentioned that.
"I said I'm sorry, there's no need to gang up on me guys." Present Mic complained but no one had any sympathy for him.
"Mimosa, I do hope that we can have a good and fair battle." Shiozaki said as the commentary after Shiozaki's chiding of Present Mic ended and she looked at her friend and classmate. "Unlike the other sinners in our class, you remained pure and true without deception giving your all in the Obstacle Race and then you were the only one to team up with members of the other class in the Cavalry Battle, I admire you for that."
"Thank you." Mimosa said she was still unsure how to gage Shiozaki's devoutness as she'd never met someone so evangelical especially when it came to a faith that less than 2% of the population practiced but it did make her a good and nice person if a little over the top when it came to her convictions so Mimosa was fine with it though as they sounded similar and both had plant based Quirks they did get lumped together at times. "I disagreed with Monoma's plan from the start, we shouldn't be competing with our future hero colleagues but learning to work with them from a young age, so it made sense. I knew you'd also not go for something so deceitful."
"Yes it was rather unpleasant, I'll whip them for it after the Sports Festival and be praying extra hard for my own role in the deceitful way we got the small one's headband last round." Shiozaki said causing Mimosa to blink as this was one of her over the top moments. "But God punished us for our wickedness by having Rose steal it from us because we didn't deserve it though thankfully that was enough to absolve us of our transgression so we kept out headband and thus made it to this stage of the Sports Festival."
"Right…" Mimosa said really not sure how to respond to that.
"Well folks, let's get this lovely ladies of Class 1-B battle started." Present Mic said thankfully saving Mimosa from any possible response while also trying to get his own mojo back after his scolding. "Begin!"
As soon as the word was said, Shiozaki clasped her hands before her in the sign of prayer and her vines that were her hair and Quirk shot up and around her before bending and shooting towards Mimosa ready to ensnare and immobilize her. Shiozaki wasn't one of the top members of their class for nothing after all, so long as she got plenty of water and sunlight for her hair she had full control over her vines.
Mimosa, though, wasn't idle either as she formed all the seeds she needed in her hands and tossed them out so that they scattered all around her. As soon as they were out of her hands she made the important instantly sprout to reveal that they were seeds for small trees that fell before her and intercepted the vines as the ones that formed specialized roots hit the ground and began to form, growing fast under Mimosa's control to quickly cover the battlefield in their root system.
With the initial block in place, Mimosa created more trees from seeds and formed them in a ring around her to prevent attacks from the side while also creating a large flower plant under feet to lift her up off the ground as several layers of roots wove and intertwined with each other to form a barrier on the floor as Shiozaki could send her vines into the ground and then up from under someone while also using them to locate people if they touched a vine. The former occurred right in time as the roots took a vine attack from there while the trees took more from all sides.
Mimosa knew that Shiozaki would just creep them up and over the trees so she activated the Flower Guidepost move she'd created to show her where Shiozaki was. Her classmate hadn't moved but her roots were under her thus giving Mimosa her location relative to the battlefield, so Mimosa knew that she had it.
Countering Shiozaki wasn't easy but she'd come up with a general strategy for it that took advantage of Mimosa's greater versatility with flora compared to the raw combat advantage Shiozaki had. It started with the block and getting off the ground while also covering the battlefield in her special roots. Those roots would contain seeds as well, seeds that weren't the same as the ones Mimosa used to make the roots and which all suddenly grew at the same time as Mimosa activated the and instantly grew them.
In a lot of ways Mimosa's Quirk was like Komori's only she could make any plant seed that she knew about and then cause that seed to sprout and grow instantly while Komori could do that with mushroom spores. However, where she differed from her classmate and why Mimosa was a recommended student from one of the top Quirk Knight families was that she had full control over what she grew while Komori could only instantly make her mushrooms.
As such, when Mimosa activate her hidden seeds a veritable plant based ecosystem bursts to life with a mix of trees, vines, large flowers, bamboo, and a whole lot more that erupted from the roots that covered the battlefield. The one thing that Mimosa lacked was the ability to properly connect to her plants, she had to see them to truly control them beyond just making them sprout.
Her guidepost was her way around that to an extent as it gave her a sense of where things were but it wasn't perfect as she couldn't make out fine details yet. As such, this move allowed her to flood the ring with plant life and pin Shiozaki in place as it forced the other girl to go on the defensive thus allowing Mimosa to come out of her own defensive shell. She confirmed this with the lack of movement in her guidepost so Mimosa felt that that was going well.
That meant that it was time to end this and she did so by parting the trees before her to see out, the flower she was on moving forward as she easily moved aside the vines on her trees that had been severed from Shiozaki's head by her explosion of flora and were the only vegetation she couldn't move as it was Shiozaki's, and looked out. Her friend and classmate had protected herself by creating a cocoon of her vines around her but that would also be her downfall as Mimosa reached out her hand and took control of her plants.
With the precise control that years of practice a member of House Vermillion received, Mimosa moved her vegetation away to create a path from herself to Shiozaki's cocoon that still hadn't moved as the girl was likely trying to figure out her own counter to Mimosa, and behind it, which meant withering a tree there, so that she had a clean shot. Then, with a flick of her wrist, she sent out a seed that she grew into a thick tree in midair and took control of it the use it as a battering ram that slammed into the cocoon with as much force as Mimosa could muster.
That was a lot of force as there was a boom from the impact before the cocoon was ripped off the ground where Shiozaki had used her vines to secure it, blasted back and out of the ring, over the stairs, and hit the ground hard enough to break apart to spill out a dazed and shocked Shiozaki. The moment Mimosa's counter attack had begun Shiozaki had gone into defense and used her connection to her vines to find Mimosa and break through her defenses to capture her but she'd failed to do so hence her sudden loss.
It was clear now that the other girl had a greater plant Quirk thus ending any debate their class had had on the subject. Shiozaki swore to the Lord as she lay on the grass that she'd get stronger so that she did not shame Him again with such a defeat.
"Shiozaki is out of the ring." Midnight said with a crack of her flail bringing everyone back to the conclusion of the battle. "Vermillion Mimosa is the winner."
Mimosa let out a sigh of relief that she'd won as she began to wither and dismiss her Quirk leaving the battlefield clear but for the holes Shiozaki's vines had caused and where her own plants had taken root for security as the commentators noted what had happened and Shiozaki knelt and prayed for forgiveness for her loss. As this was going on Mimosa suddenly realized that she'd be facing Asta next. That got her all flustered and she hurried off without even checking on her classmate, she'd apologize later for that, to try and quell her beating heart at the idea of facing Asta in battle.
"Wow." Ochaco said her eyes wide as the plants withered. "I did not see her having that much power, or her Quirk being able to do all that. That was something else."
"Mimosa is a Vermillion; they are as strong as the Silvas when it comes to their Quirks." Noelle said with a flick of her ponytail as she tried not to let the sheer display of Mimosa's control get to her as that was the kind of control she wanted to obtain. "She's going to be strong; it's too be expected."
"Still, that was some serious power." Izuku said making notes on what he'd seen. "What is her Quirk called, I think she's told me before but I can't remember it."
"Plant Seeds." Noelle said. "Mimosa can create the seeds to any plants from anywhere on her body so long as she knows what that plant is and instantly make it grow and bloom. To add to it she can control her plants with her mind providing that she can see them. There's a reason why she's a recommended student, I suggest not taking her lightly just because she as a sweet personality because she's got the power to back up her familial name and enrollment status."
"Still, that is some serious power." Weiss said. "I don't know the Vermillions well, and what I know is more reserved for their fire based Quirks, but that really showed their power and that's the branch family, right?"
"Soon to be." Noelle said with a nod as neither girl noticed the slightly unintentional pun. "Mimosa's father is the younger brother to the current patriarch of the family, and both she and her brother gets their plant based Quirks through him which he got from his mother, her grandmother. Her uncle, the patriarch, and all of his kids, which includes Leo, have the traditional fire Quirks that the main branch is famous for. similar to how the Silva's are historically water though with my brother's Mercury Quirk, a derivative of our mother's metal Quirk, we're going to change soon as he's our father's heir."
"I was just impressed by all that power." Ochaco said. "She's a lot more than I expected. Really shows that you shouldn't judge a hero until you see her power."
"Mimosa is humbler than most of our birth, especially compared to her brother, and has always been noted for her support abilities and control." Noelle said. "But she has the power and will use it when need be."
"Clearly, there's a lot she can do." Izuku said as he continued to make notes. "I can see why she's recommended. That will be hard to beat."
"She's facing Asta next." Nero noted her tone as neutral as ever. "If anyone can truly counter that, he can as all of those plants are from her Quirk so one hit from his swords would destroy them. Also fire and ice would work well so she's not unbeatable, just tougher than most of us initially thought."
"True Asta facing her will be interesting." Izuku noted. "It will come down to who's faster I feel."
"Yeah that's going to be fun." Asta said. "I can't wait to see how well I do against Mimosa and her Quirk."
"You may have beaten Tetsutetsu but next round you're done for." Monoma said finally appearing as the battlefield was cleared of plants and Mimosa hurried off though there was a brief pause as the damage was repaired by Cementoss and Shiozaki continued to pray where she was. "You just saw how strong Mimosa is. She's up there with Shinso and Yuno in terms of power. She may have betrayed us in the Cavalry Battle by joining one of your teams but she can make it up by beating her rider from that battle in the next round of the tournament."
"Mimosa won't beat Asta." Noelle said the defensiveness in her voice a lot stronger than she expected but she felt that she had to defend Asta and make it clear that he'd beat Mimosa. "You saw what he can do, he'll handle Mimosa with ease."
"That parlor trick of his may have worked on a meathead like Tetsutetsu." Monoma said ignoring a loud 'hey' from behind him as Tetsutetsu had returned all bandaged up and arm in a sling following his loss. "But against Mimosa it won't. Just you watch, we're going to come back and then…"
"Apologies again." Kendo said as she knocked Monoma out from behind before popping up as he slid down the wall. "That will be an interesting match but let's get through the first round first. This next match has the only non-Hero Course student to make it to the final event so it will be interesting."
"Right Hatsume, I wonder what she'll do." Izuku said as Kendo dropped down to lecture Monoma, again. "And against Kaminari so it will be good to see what her plan is."
"She'll use some of her support items." Ochaco said trying to ignore the slightly off feeling she had when Deku spoke about Hatsume. "She has plenty of items on her so she's bound to have something that can counter him."
"Would be fitting for him to lose to a Support Course girl, especially after that stunt that he pulled." Nero said. "Mineta's paid for his roll, now it's Kaminari's turn and what better way than an embarrassing loss to someone who isn't in the Hero Course."
The other girls nodded at that as the commentators began to commentate again indicating the start of the next match as the combatants walked out. It was time to see just how good Hatsume could be with her 'babies' against a Hero Course student in one on one combat.
"It's time folks for the only matchup in the entire final tournament that doesn't feature a Hero Course student!" Present Mic said as the crowd cheered and Kaminari and Hatsume walked out into the arena. "Because in this one pits the boy with the electric personality, from Class 1-A in the Hero Course, Denki Kaminari against a fully kited up gadget girl, from the Support Course's Class 1-H, it's Mei Hatsume. What do you think guys? Who's got this."
"No clue." Aizawa said in a bored tone. "With a Support Course student in it, especially one seen to be a prodigy, you can't tell until you see her items and what they can do."
"Precisely which is why this is going to be so interesting." Oobleck said as the competitors ascended the steps and Hatsume showed how geared up she was with her boots, backpack, what had to be a capture gun on her hip and several other gadgets that couldn't be identified. "Support gets to bring in whatever they've made between the start of the year and the Sports Festival so if you really want to show off with your gear then making it this far is a good way to show that you can create items that can compete with the Hero Course. Shame Huntsmen and Huntress track students don't get the same allowance as they have personal support licenses for their weapons but it is only fair."
"That is true, it's only right that just Support gets this unless someone in the other Courses goes through the proper channels for specific, personal, items." Port said as the pair walked into the ring before coming to a stop. "And for the companies watching the Sports Festival looking for recruits is the time to do so, so long as we don't get a repeat of last year's incident with Sally when she got this far and then some in the tournament."
Kaminari had no idea what the commentators were talking about as the commentators went on to discuss how a Support Course girl had made it this far as well the year before when she was a first year and had won two matches to reach the quarterfinals. However, her items were at best questionably ethical leading to her disqualification when one of her items that she used to win her quarterfinal matchup apparently violated the Chemical Weapons Convention.
It was just idly chatter to Kaminari because all he cared about was that the Support Course girl was really cute with an adorably eccentric flair to her that made it a shame to beat her in their upcoming battle, so he would offer to take her on a date to make up for it. That and the way her backpack thing was strapped really accentuate her impressively sized bust though Kaminari wasn't as much of a sucker for breasts as Mineta was.
"Say, how about after the Sports Festival I take you out for dinner." Kaminari said with a grin as he got ready. "I know a great spot in the area that we could check out as I make it up to you for beating you."
For her part Hatsume didn't respond to the attempt to pick her up, she just reached a hand up to turn on the speaker system she had on her and adjusted the mic so that she could speak clearly into it. This match wasn't as important to her as the moron she was facing wasn't useful for her purposes. Also, he was clearly into something she wasn't, she had no time for dating or relationships when her focus was her babies and showing them off, but she had two devices that would work for it as a good warm up for the next round. That was where, providing the right person advanced, she'd really be able to market herself.
"Alright, it's time." Present Mic said cutting off the conversation between the Huntsmen regarding the potential of Sally if she could learn what ethics were. "Begin!"
"No words fine I'll ask you again when I defeat you." Kaminari said as he charged up and Hatsume just smiled at him. "Now face 1.3 million volts!"
"Attention, this is how a hero who's not resistant to electricity can handle a moron like this who just discharges all his electricity in one go." Hatsume said her voice carrying to the whole stadium as she spoke showing that she was wearing a speaker somewhere in all her gear as she pulled a metal rod off her belt and pressed a button on it before tossing it in front of her and it extended to about twice her height as soon as she did. "My baby number 49, a simple one but useful as the tech inside as it draws all electricity to it rather than just relying on being metal."
That was shown as all the electricity that Kaminari had sent off was drawn right to it and sucked in before it dropped to the ground and glowed and crackled at one end. Hatsume just walked towards it as Kaminari went stupid and stood there going 'yeah' or whatever he did, Hatsume wasn't paying attention as he wasn't a useful billboard for her items so she left him where he was until she needed him again. Instead, she just picked up the rod and held it up before collapsing it to a short baton size while the end remained the same.
"And voila, not only does it protect you but now it is a charged stun baton all thanks to a villain's own power." Hatsume said as she put it back on her belt where it rested against her thigh not frying her. "Plus, as you can see, it's perfectly safe and contained until you need to discharge it after making contact with a villain who isn't resistant to electricity. Next up I will now capture and defeat this kid to show one of my latest capture devices."
At that Hatsume pulled out the gun she had on her, pointed it at Kaminari, and then fired it causing a red net to appear from the end of it and wrap up Kaminari taking him to the ground and unable to move though he didn't seem to notice as he lay there still in his stupid mode. As he did, Hatsume held up the gun in her right hand and pointed at it with her left.
"As you can see this is my capture gun to use against villains." Hatsume said as she used her free hand to emphasize the aspects of the gun as she described them. "The nets are loaded into small cartridges and you can fire up to 5 before you have to reload it and I have many more variants of them for all kinds of villains so you can capture all kinds of Quirks. This is just a taste of my items, a preview for the next round were I'll debut even more babies for your enjoyment."
"Well it would appear that Kaminari is captured and therefore immobilized." Midnight declared with a crack of her flail when it became clear that he wasn't going to get out and that Hatsume wasn't going to release him. "Hatsume is the winner."
There was some confusion and surprise at that but Hatsume just smirked as she walked off the battlefield and the robots moved onto the battlefield to take Kaminari away with some snide comments about his level of intelligence when it came to using his Quirk. She'd shown that her items could take down a Hero Course student which was a huge boost to her recruitment hopes and next up, so long as that Ida kid advanced, she'd really show off. All she needed was for him to win and so she found a place in the tunnel to wait for him as she got ready for her next round where she'd really show off her babies.
"That was embarrassing." Jiro said putting her hand over her face as several in the class nodded at that as they stared at Kaminari still in a net and in full stupid mode on the battlefield. "He lost, that's not the bad thing because it's Kaminari he was likely to lose to anyone who could withstand his electricity, no he just had to lose to a Support Course girl and it wasn't a loss, it was an utter defeat. He's not living this one down."
"Hatsume is pretty talented with her babies." Izuku said not making notes as he'd not seen Hatsume use her Quirk, in fact she'd not even told him what her Quirk was so he had no idea what it could be or if it even helped her with her support items. "She was a big help in the Cavalry Battle, between her and Uraraka we couldn't have been that mobile, and she showed just how good they can be against a Hero Course student which is kinda the point of support gear. It's meant to take down villains so if it can take down one of us then it's got a lot of potential."
"She also showed how stupid Kaminari is." Nero said bluntly. "And how easy it is to counter him in battle. His electricity is good as it can stun and take people down but that side effect, he needs to work on that if he wants to be a good hero in the future."
"Ha, see, your class is nothing special." Monoma said with a laugh as he popped his head up once again now happy that one of Class 1-A had lost for the first time since Sero had lost to Todoroki which didn't count, and to a non-Hero Course student at that which only added to the humiliation of the loss. "Kaminari's an idiot and he lost in seconds to a Support Course student. That wasn't even a contest and you call yourselves a Hero Course class."
"We've still beaten two of your class to one of yours beating one of us." Asta said having returned during the commentary. "How's that loudmouth doing?"
"I would ask about Tokage but I don't think she was embarrassed there." Weiss said. "Seriously, who wears panties like that."
"Most girls have a pair or two, well I don't but that's because that doesn't interest me." Nero said as Mineta perked up at the panty chat. "But let's not discuss this while the pervert is in earshot."
"Good idea." Weiss said.
"I'm still annoyed you made miss some good panties." Mineta wailed. "Just how good where they?"
"Thong." Sero said and Mineta wailed at that."
"Shut it, you got lucky in those two battles, that's all." Monoma said clearly annoyed they weren't paying him attention so trying to get it back. "We've still got this and next up is Komori, she's scary with what she can do so…"
"Monoma, shut up." Yuno said suddenly appearing and dragging Monoma back which was a little surprising as they'd come to expect Kendo so she must be in the bathroom or something. "Tetsutetsu lost because he was facing Asta, simple as that, while Tokage isn't great in direct combat as her skills are better suited to leadership and scouting. Now sit down and watch to see if Komori can win because this is a matchup that is hard for her whether you like it or not."
"That was a little different." Ochaco said as usually it was Kendo who stopped Monoma as Yuno ignored them to sit back down while Monoma continued to complain. "But whatever, Ida's got this, right?"
"With the move he showed off in the Cavalry Battle, he should." Izuku said as he flipped to a new page to make an entry for Komori as Ida and a small brunette girl walked out onto the battlefield. "But I'm not sure what this Komori girl can do so we'll see."
The others just nodded at this as they sat back to watch the next matchup that would conclude the first half of the bracket. In this one, just like another to come, it would come down to a simply question; was Class 1-A faster than what Class 1-B could do?
"It's time for the 8th match and the final one in the first half of the first round of the final event in the first years' Sports Festival!" Present Mic said to the cheering crowd as Ida and Komori walked out and headed to the battlefield. "It's two new competitors in another inter Hero Course class matchup as the kid with engines in his calves from Class 1-A, Tenya Ida, faces off against the aspiring idol of Class 1-B, Kinoko Komori! How will this play out?"
"It will come down to who's faster." Aizawa said as Ida and Komori climbed the steps up, something Ida agreed with as his plan to win was to just use Recipro Turbo to get behind Komori and push her out as he didn't know what she could do so this was the safest bet to win and advance to the next round of the tournament. "This match will last at most 10 seconds."
"I agree, speed will be key here." Oobleck said. "In more ways than one."
"Right, I wish we had some better tech because the replays will show it well." Port said. "Especially with the Quirks at play in this battle."
Ida didn't know what that meant but he didn't care as he entered the ring and got to his starting spot as Komori did the same opposite him. He didn't know who she was but he'd beat her and advance to face that Support Course girl as he pushed through the bracket to win this hoping that his brother was watching but if he wasn't that was fine as well because he knew that Tensei was busy being a great hero.
On the other hand Komori knew what the commentators were talking about as her Mushroom Quirk allowed her to produce spores of any fungus it seemed from her body and make them grow right away so she was the fungi to Mimosa's plantae. That meant that this battle would come down to whether or not she produce enough spores to cause an issue for Ida before he could push her out. Well that was about to be learned as they didn't speak to each other like most of the other pairs had so Present Mic just began as soon as it was clear that both were ready for it.
"Begin!"
"Recipro Turbo!" Ida yelled as he got down in a runner's stance and over torqued his engines so that blue fire short from them right before he blasted off the ground and ran at Komori as fast as he could muster it.
For her part Komori was no slouch as the moment the match began she started to release spores but they didn't even touch the ground before Ida was suddenly behind her and grabbing her shoulders which shocked her and broke any concentration so she could cultivate her cuties. That was all she got before she was pushed forward as Ida ran behind her and suddenly she was standing outside of the ring blinking with Ida behind her still in it behind her. The match had lasted less than 10 seconds as predicted.
"Komori is out." Midnight said with a crack of her flail. "Ida is the winner."
Ida bowed to Komori and then waited as his engines cooled down so that he could move again. Komori just blinked again at that before she walked off dejected at how fast she'd lost. As she walked she realized that what she really needed something that could immobilize a person without them noticing and to do so quickly.
Thankfully there were fungi that were microscopic, they were just not cute to her to use normally because you couldn't see them but perhaps she could branch out and use them to attack someone's lungs as a last resort. That could come in handy in the future and Komori resolved to practice that as she walked off, the 3rd of her class to lose to a Class 1-A student in their 4 matchups so far.
It wasn't until Komori was out of the stadium that Ida could walk again and when he could he walked out as well. He'd won and advanced as he'd intended so he was ready for his next match and has he was leaving his path was blocked by none other than Mei Hatsume, his next opponent who smiled at him in what Ida thought was a genuine way.
"Hey legs, I've got a proposition for you for our match, to make it fair." Hatsume said with a smile that didn't meet her crosshair eyes but Ida didn't notice that. "If you're willing, I can…"
At that Hatsume explained her plan and Ida listened, moved by her words as he didn't doubt her sincerity and agreeing quickly to it. Hatsume just smiled, it was too easy it seemed, she had just what she needed and she'd make the most of it in the next round where she truly showed the support company executives what she could make.
"That was quick but it's what we've come to expect from Ida." Izuku said as he made notes on Ida's power, he couldn't do anything for his entry on Komori though. "Just a shame I didn't see what Quirk Komori had. I wonder what it is."
"Something with range." Nero said. "At least I think that's what Mimosa said about it during the Cavalry Battle."
"That was fast." Asta said agreeing with Izuku as he thought on it, he was facing Mimosa next which was going to be interesting in its own right and if he won that then he'd likely face Ida in the quarterfinals so he needed a plan for that. "I wonder how best to counter that speed."
"Speed is important." Ruby said with a nod. "And Ida's fast, faster than me at top speed though my acceleration is better. That gave me some inspiration for my match."
"Just because you won this one doesn't mean that you will win any of the remaining matchups, Ida was just too fast for Komori at the moment but next time she'll really show what she can do against your class." Monoma said once more popping up. "And besides, next up is our ace in the hole, Yuno. Between him and Shinso we've got two of the strongest in the year, you're not going to beat either of them so you'd better…"
"Sorry." Kendo said popping up to chop Monoma in the back of the neck and cause him to fall back down with a groan. "He's just excited for the next one because he's not wrong, of any in our class Yuno is the most likely to win against one of you after Shinso's win. This one is in our favor, just watch and you'll see why Yuno topped the entrance exam. I was in his group for it and saw what he did to that robot first hand so I do agree with Monoma on this, Yuno's our ace."
"No worries, I expect Yuno to win this." Asta said with a grin. "He's my rival so I've got to be the one to beat him in the final even if my own class loses to him along the way."
"Er, ok." Kendo said not sure how to respond to that and deciding to just go back to her seat as she dealt with Monoma who was coming to.
"Yuno's that good?" Izuku asked looking at Asta. "Kirishima's no slouch, he was 6th in the entrance exam after all."
"And Yuno was first." Asta pointed out. "So yeah, I don't think he'll lose. There are some in the class who can counter him, myself included, but for once that Monoma kid is right, they're the favorites in this match."
"This will be good then." Izuku said as he flipped to a page and began to make an entry for Yuno. "I have wanted to see what his Quirk can do in a combat situation so there's a lot to learn from this."
Asta just nodded as the commentary began and Yuno and Kirishima walked out for the 9th battle of the first round. He was eager to see how his rival did and while he didn't want to root against his own class, Yuno was his to beat so he hoped he won like Asta had as then they'd be one step closer to being in the final together as the second half of the final event's first round was about to begin.
"We've entered the second half of the bracket and we're starting off with a flip of an earlier battle." Present Mic said as Yuno and Kirishima walked out though Yuno was just ignoring this as he had to win, Asta had won so he was going to as well as he wasn't going to fall behind his rival. "This will be another inter Hero Class matchup as we see the passionate, manly fighter made of rock that is Eijiro Kirishima of Class 1-A against the rural boy of the north who's already announced that he's aiming to be the Wizard King from Class 1-B, Yuno!"
"Gah it's the same as Tetsutetsu's." Kirishima complained though Yuno didn't care, winning and advancing was all that mattered to him. "I'm different you know."
"So what will we see in this one?" Present Mic asked as the boys made their way to the stairs up to the battlefield. "Rock or stars?"
"Yuno's shown some of his skills so far but he has more to give based off what I saw in his entrance exam." Aizawa said simply. "He didn't come top of that exam with the second highest score since All Might for nothing so it will come down to seeing if Tetsutetsu is strong enough to break through."
"Precisely." Oobleck said. "There are a few aspects of Yuno's Quirk we have yet to see in action, or at least not as it's normally deployed, so it's a good way to see how it stacks up against something like Hardening. If he goes for that at all."
"It shall be interesting whatever happens." Port said.
Yuno understood what they were getting on about and he was planning on doing that as he walked onto the battlefield and faced off against the redhaired boy who was apparently the other class's version of Tetsutetsu. His plan to win was simple because it was the same plan that he had used against Shishida back in the battle trial and it would work fine here.
Thanks to the Cavalry Battle, Yuno knew that he could just use teleportation stars on others but that was a cheap gimmick to him, he was going to win this without using that aspect of his Quirk on anything but himself and even then he'd only use a teleportation star if he absolutely needed to use it. If Yuno wanted to show that he had what it took to be the Wizard King one day then he had to win with strength not tricks and besides plenty would have ways around it so he needed to always have multiple strategies to win a matchup.
For his part Kirishima was just grinning as he cracked his knuckles and looked at Yuno. This was the kid who'd topped the entrance exam, who'd come second in the Obstacle Race and orchestrated the shock at the end of the Cavalry Battle that had won it for his team. He was living up to his pledge which was so manly but Kirishima planned on winning this to show that he was just as manly as Yuno was.
"You're a man of your word, I can respect that as a true man should be." Kirishima called out to Yuno. "You made the pledge and are sticking to it but it ends here, I'll beat you now."
"There's only one person who can beat me and I won't lose until I get the chance to face him and show that even he can't beat me." Yuno said simply. "And you're not him so be prepared to go down."
"Alright folks it's time, let's kick off the second half." Present Mic said ending any trash talk before it could start, not that Yuno would lower himself to something like that, that was the kinda thing Asta would do. "Begin!"
Kirishima let out a roar and charged but Yuno didn't move, instead he stood still as the other boy rushed him and his body hardened into, well Yuno didn't know what it was but Present Mic had called it rock so he went with that as his baseline for Kirishima's toughness as the stars formed before him. Regardless, it was a simple Quirk that while not flashy had a lot of potential as a shield for a team as well as a strong close combat Quirk depending on how hard it was.
That meant that this would be a good test for Yuno as the beams of light between the stars formed and connected into a constellation shield before him right as Kirishima reached it and punched. If he could hold out defensively, and score hits offensively, against a Quirk like this it would show how strong his stars were.
Their strength was shown right at the start as rather than crack it or break through, the shield held and Kirishima's fist rebounded off it though there was a boom as he made contact with the shield. Yuno was impressed, that Hardening Quirk gave him some serious power but it was nothing compared to what Shishida could produce with Beast active so it would hold for long enough as more stars formed behind Kirishima as he recovered from his shock at his attack being blocked and punched again.
"Just what the hell is this." Kirishima said as he punched again to no avail though the force was enough to tell Yuno that his shield could withstand at best a dozen or so more blows which was why the stars behind Kirishima began to open fire with their offensive beams of starlight that drilled into Kirishima's back and sides. "What kind of Quirk can…ah."
"My Quirk is called Starforce, with it and my brains I'll become the next Wizard King." Yuno said simple as Kirishima groaned in pain from several blows to his back and side that even with his hardening he felt. "You're tough, I'll give you that, but there's only so much you can take while holding your Quirk active. Don't forget that Quirks are physical abilities too, they can tire just as much as any other part of your body can and yours is a transformation class Quirk, that kinda stuff can take more of a toll on the body the longer its active I believe."
"Smart, handsome, and powerful, damn you're so manly." Kirishima said through gritted teeth though he smiled as he hardened himself as much as he could and began to wail on the constellation shield with all his strength as the stars continued to fire on his back. "You're the full package, whatever happens I'll get stronger for next time."
"Do what you need to become a better hero in your own right." Yuno said. "Only Asta can rival me."
With that more stars appeared as Yuno pushed himself a little bit more, the blows were harder than he'd expected and this kid really had a good drive to him, so he had to end it fast and with Kirishima's defense Yuno could use more power in his offensive stars. He did just that as the blows overwhelmed Kirishima and he began to slow in his assault before finally he couldn't anymore and collapsed to the ground, holes in his clothes and out could with marks all over from where the star beams had hit him. Still Yuno kept the constellation shield up as he awaited the news.
"Kirishima has been knocked out." Midnight declared with a crack of her flail. "Yuno is the winner."
Yuno nodded at that and dismissed his stars before he turned and walked off leaving Kirishima to be picked up by the robots and taken to the infirmary. He'd won and that was what mattered, he was one step closer to the final where he hoped to face Asta. There'd be challenges in the way of course but he'd weather them because his rival awaited him and Yuno wouldn't let Asta down as they both advanced to the next round of the final event in their first U.A. Sports Festival.
"What, what just happened?" Ochaco asked her eyes wide as Kirishima collapsed and the battle ended with his defeat. "What did that Yuno kid do?"
"Starforce, that's what it's called right?" Izuku asked as he furiously made notes about it. "Seeing it in action in combat, it's more than I could have imagined."
"Yeah Yuno's always been like that, lucky bastard was born with a super powerful and versatile Quirk." Asta said with a grin and a shake of his head. "Plus he's handsome so a natural lady killer but he's my rival, I'd expect no less from him."
At that pretty much every girl but Noelle, who was in denial, Yaoyorozu who wasn't present as she was in the next match, and Ruby who was about as dense as Asta was on this kinda stuff, in the class that had heard Asta's statement about Yuno being a lady killer, as well as a seething Mineta, gave him a sideways look. Even those he didn't speak to much had been able to tell that Noelle was already crushing on Asta hard, they were schoolgirls after all so it wasn't hard to notice.
Nero and Weiss knew it for certain given all they'd seen from Noelle but it didn't take a genius to deduce that Noelle liked Asta and that she was in so much denial that a manga tsundere would be envious on the levels of denial that Noelle was reaching. That just made Asta's statement super dense given that one of the hottest girls in the class had fallen for him and was only falling harder as the days went on.
In Mineta's case it was more he believed that Asta had some magical way with girls after 3 carried him in the last round so the fact that he didn't realize that he had his own harem forming really pissed the small pervert off. He wanted the ladies and Asta had at least one if not three and didn't know, he could at least share his wisdom with Mineta so that he could learn the tricks to getting a harem of his own as well.
"Kirishima's good and all but there's only so much Hardening can take and Yuno can dish out more than that to the point that he can overwhelm Kirishima before he reaches his own limit." Asta continued oblivious to things around him. "I knew that Kirishima would lose, a shame for the class but oh well, I fully intend to beat Yuno in the final when we make it there."
"Ha, I told you that Yuno was our ace, he was going to do it no matter what." Monoma said as he again popped his head up to taunt their class after finally securing a victory in the interclass matchups following three losses in them. "We got one back on you with that and next up is Awase, he's not going to…"
"My apologies, he keeps coming to, I think he's building a resistance to my chop." Kendo said as she repeated what had to be routine by now as she pulled Monoma down and hit him. "Ignore him, he's just pleased Yuno won, we all are, that's all."
"Right." Izuku said before he looked back to the battlefield as the next match was about to start. "So next is Yaoyorozu against Awase, who's got this?"
"Unless Awase has a ranged Quirk that can be activated in seconds, Momo has it." Weiss said and Noelle nodded. "She's too versatile and clever to lose this. That said, that Yuno kid has the power to beat her so she'd better be smart if she advances because she's going to face him next."
That made sense so the rest of Class A settled in to watch one of their own recommended students head out and win the latest matchup between the two Hero Course classes. They needed it after the last loss and so they all cheered as Momo stepped out as the commentary for the second match of the second half of the first round of the final event got hyped up.
"Folks it's time for the second match of the second half and boy do we have an interesting matchup for you in this one." Present Mic said to the cheering crowd as Momo and Awase walked out and onto the field heading to the raised battlefield in the middle of it. "In this one we have the man who can bond anything on a molecular level so long as he's touching them, the welder of Class 1-B Yosetsu Awase, against the great creator who can make anything so long as she understands it's molecular structure, admitted because of recommendations and I'm sure we can all see why, from Class 1-A, Momo Yaoyorozu! What are my boys' thoughts on this?"
"I'm not your boy." Aizawa said. "But in this one it's pretty straightforward how it will go."
"True, the mismatch is clear as day and shows that there will be times in the field when you can't defeat who you're facing." Oobleck said as Momo began to climb the stairs doing her best to not listen to the commentary but failing in that regard. "But such is the nature of some matchups, the true test of a hero is how he or she overcomes such a mismatch with retreat to get a better suited hero being a valid way to overcome it."
"It will be interesting to see if that can happen in this match." Ports said as Momo and Awase reached the top of the steps and walked into the ring. "I'll be watching closely to see if that is the case or if this is one where retreat would be the best course of action in the real world."
Momo wasn't sure who they were referring to but she'd heard the intros and at least got a sense for what Awase could do. It would seem that his Quirk Factor was localized to his hands and while it sounded useful with a similar molecular aspect to it that she had, it couldn't contend with Creation.
Between the versatility of Creation and Momo's mind which was the key to making her powerful Quirk work due to the need to know the molecular structure of what she made, she had a lot of potential. It was why she got her recommendation after all however, after the way her team had lost in the Cavalry Battle her confidence in her abilities was shook. They had barely made it into the final round and that weighed on her mind but she pushed it from her mind as she focused on the match and the raven haired man before her.
Awase meanwhile was sure that the commentators had spoken about him as the one at the disadvantage as he looked at the refined, elegant, and very classic Japanese beauty before him. He couldn't lie that he found Yaoyorozu stunning but he had to push that from his mind as he was here to win.
It was clear from what the commentators had said that he was at a disadvantage in this matchup and he knew that well enough seeing as he needed physical touch to make his Quirk work so he had to get up close and personal for it to work. That was in contrast to what he'd gathered of Yaoyorozu's Quirk as it gave her ranged options with its versatility. That meant that he had to be quick and fast to get in close and use Weld on her if he wanted to win this.
"Just so you know Yaoyorozu, I'm not going to hold back because you're a woman." Awase said to her as they squared off with each other. "As heroes we will face the opposite gender in the field so we can't let notions of chivalry cloud our minds when facing a villain threat. If I can avoid that here with a fellow hero then I can do that in the field."
"I would expect no less, it would be a dishonor to treat me any different because of my gender just as it would be a dishonor for me to do the same to you." Momo said with a small smile. "I look forward to this battle and making up for my failure in the last round."
Awase didn't know what that was about but he ignored it as he set himself for this. The moment the word came he had to act and he was ready to do so.
"Alright, begin!" Present Mic said and instantly Awase rushed Momo to try and get close enough to touch her.
It was a quick start but Momo was calm as she made her item as fast as she could as she raised her left arm and flicked it at the charging Awase as the sparkles formed there showing that Creation was active. Awase didn't even have a chance before a special capture net, the same kind as one that she had used during the USJ incident, shot out of her arm and at Awase who proceeded to run into it before he could evade it. She'd assumed correctly that he had to use touch to activate his Quirk so she'd kept him at a distance with the net that engulfed Awase and dragged him down unable to move as he struggled in it.
"What the hell is this made off?" Awase asked as he tried to break free but he couldn't. "I can't get out of it."
"A special polymer that is designed to make capture easier and it's strong enough to restrained a standard strength enhancing Quirk so I don't think you can get out but I need to properly subdue you to win." Momo said as she walked forward a taser gun complete with already loaded discharge cartridge coming out of her right hand. "For what it's worth, I'm sorry this was so quick but our matchup was bad from the start."
Awase didn't get a chance to say anything to that before Momo fired the taser and the electrodes shot out and hit Awase in the chest through the netting. Instantly he fried, letting out a yelp of pain as he spasmed from the electricity coursing through his body before he slumped back still in the net only now unconscious and slightly smoking.
"Awase has been knocked out." Midnight said with a crack of her flail that had come to signal the end of a match. "Yaoyorozu is the winner."
Momo let a small smile grace her lips at that as the robots came out to help Awase and she stood by to make sure that they sorted him out as the net could be hard to get off without the right tool that she made just in case. She'd lost some confidence following the Cavalry Battle but it had started to come back with that win. The problem was that her next opponent was the very person who'd orchestrate that finale to the Cavalry Battle.
That meant that Momo would need all she had to beat Yuno and that strange Quirk of his and advance deeper into the final event. So, as Awase was stretchered off, Momo turned and left the battlefield herself thinking on how best she could use Creation to counter Starforce.
"Did anyone expect anything else from that?" Jiro asked the class as the match ended. "Yao-Momo handled that within a minute, she's so punk rock when she wants to be."
"Yaoyorozu's Quirk is versatile and strong but it's her application of it that brings out its full potential." Izuku said noting it as he made some additions to his notes on Creation in his notebook. "I didn't get to see what Awase could do but from the announcement and his opening charge I presume that he has a touch based Quirk which against Yaoyorozu's range wasn't going to counter her. That said, she's against Yuno next and that will be hard."
"Yuno's as versatile and strong as Yaoyorozu while also able to create his stars in seconds so I expect it to be good." Asta said. "That was quick but we won over Class B so another solid win."
"I'm surprised that annoying boy isn't popping up." Noelle said. "We're now what, 4 to 2 against them, you'd think that he'd be getting irritated by that and try to cover it with some more trash talk."
"Probably licking his wounds from another loss, as you pointed out Noelle, we've won all but two of the matchups so far, and the next battle it between two members of our class." Nero noted idly. "So he has no reason to taunt us as there's no one in his class to lose this next matchup as I won't lose to whoever I'm facing."
"Speaking of the next match." Ojiro said as Nero got up to leave and wait for her own match that came after the one about to happen and feeling that the current one was going to be a quick one so she needed to hurry. "Who do you think will win it Midoriya?"
"Hard to say, Ashido has mobility with her Acid Quirk and getting it on you can't be good but Dark Shadow is strong offensively and defensively." Izuku said thinking on it and not going into Tokoyami's weakness as it wasn't his to divulge. "Plus Tokoyami can call him out in an instant so it will be interesting to see how it plays out. I'd say that Tokoyami has the edge but I won't rule Ashido out right away."
"Cool this will be good to watch then." Asta said as the commentary began. "And we're guaranteed an advancement either way."
The others nodded at that as they settled in to see the next match as Tokoyami and Ashido walked out onto the battlefield for the match. Ultimately, though, for the second time that day a match occurred without anything of interest or note for Class 1-A as their classmates Tokoyami and Ashido faced off in the 11th battle of the first round. The only real thing that was at play was would Ashido be able to evade Dark Shadow with her acid and would her acid actually work on the creature.
It turned out that neither were the case as Tokoyami could summon Dark Shadow in an instant and he tore at Ashido before she could move using the acid from her feet so that his head slammed into her chest driving her back. Ashido tried to throw handfuls of acid at it but that didn't seem to affect Dark Shadow who kept up the pressure landing two more hits before Ashido fell backwards and landed on her ass out of the ring at the back so Tokoyami was declared the winner in another quick battle that helped move the first round on at a good pace.
With his victory secured, Tokoyami simply recalled Dark Shadow having not moved an inch, bowed to Ashido, turned and left the battlefield as she complained on the ground. It had lasted less than 30 seconds and was one of the fasted battles so far but the crowd still cheered at it and Present Mic began hyping up Dark Shadow as he didn't know that there was a pretty big weakness to the bird that at least four of the students that were still in the Sports Festival could easily exploit. That may come in play though later on as the battles moved swiftly to the next one after a simple, nondestructive, win.
"So how will this go?" Asta asked as Nero and her opponent, some guy called Honenuki, walked out of their entrances. "Didn't Mimosa say she knew what that guy's Quirk is? I think I recognize him from the Cavalry Battle."
"He used his Quirk on our team near the start." Izuku said as he flipped to make a new entry for the Class 1-B boy. "Made us start to sink into the ground, not sure what he does precisely though."
"According to Mimosa he can soften what he touches." Noelle said. "Which is an interesting Quirk to face off against Nero's."
"I'll say." Izuku said now excited as he began to write. "We rarely get to see an example of Quirk on Quirk dominance like this so I wonder which is going to win out."
"I'd say Nero's." Weiss said simply. "I've seen her use it from her feet, the girl's got a lot of skill and control with it and part of me feels like she's not shown us all that she can do. Also, she may have gotten the second highest rescue points in the entrance exam but that was mainly because of Asta's recklessness, but she also got enough villain points to come 5th so she's got combat skills."
"Ha, you think so but Honenuki is another recommended student in our class and has the best tactical mind." Monoma said popping up for the first time in a few battles to trash talk them. "So…"
"Again sorry for him." Kendo said in an exacerbated voice at having to once again deal with Monoma's antics especially after a decent lull in things. "The match will start soon so just sit back and enjoy it."
"Right." Asta said as the commentators started to speak. "Come on Nero, I know you can win!"
The others felt that as well, though deep down Noelle wanted Asta to cheer that loud, if not louder, for her when the time came but she pushed that away, for the moment at least. She was here to support her friend, they all were, and the class cheered for the match to begin and hopefully notch them another win over Class 1-B.
"Moving onto the next battle, let's see if this is as short as the last one." Present Mic said as Nero and Honenuki walked out of their entrances and across the grass to the battlefield. "And as with all but one of the battles in the final event, this is a Hero Course showdown and like all the ones we have left to see it is another between Class 1-A and 1-B. Representing the latter is one of their recommended students, the softener himself, Juzo Honenuki, who's facing off against the mysterious Secré Swallowtail. Um, does anyone know why she's not wearing shoes or socks?"
"You'll see why soon enough though if you'd been paying attention you'd have realized that she's not worn them in any of the events so far." Aizawa said as the pair climbed the steps while Nero tried not to sigh at the use of her legal name. "This one will be interesting given the Quirks at play in it."
"That it will be, I wonder which Quirk has dominance." Oobleck said the intrigue clear in his voice. "From an academic perspective this is a fascinating matchup as we rarely get to see Quirks that are in clear opposition with each other in a conflict situation but we're going to see it today with these Quirks. This is beyond something like fire and water, which is coming up actually, this is something much more complex."
"True it shall be entertaining at least." Port added as Nero and Honenuki crested the stairs and walked onto the battlefield. "I for one am looking forward to seeing which one wins out."
"I don't know what they're on about but you're going down." Honenuki said to Nero as they came to a stop a respectful distance from each other like all the other pairs had done. "I may not have raced with the pack in the first event but I still support my classmates, they're my friends and we're going to show you lot in Class A that we're just as good as you are."
"Huh, interesting, your voice is pretty similar to his." Nero said as she cocked her head but remained expressionless as she spoke. "However, while you may sound like Asta but you've got nothing on him even if he's not recommended compared to you. This will be easy, I can't lose to some poor imitation of the man who'll be the next Wizard King, of who will truly follow in his footsteps and complete his legacy."
"What are you going on about?" Honenuki asked confused before shaking his head as he wasn't going to let his opponent play head games with him. "Never mind, prepare to be sunk."
"Well this will be a good test to see how much stronger I've become thanks to my p…, my friend." Nero said as she got ready. "Let's start this already so I can beat you."
"You heard the girl, folks, begin!" Present Mic declared.
"Ha you're done for now." Honenuki said as he knelt down and slammed his palms into the ground sending a wave of Softening across it to Nero. "Unless you can fly or leap a good distance then you're not going to…huh, wait what?"
"I see, so my Quirk is the dominant one." Nero said as her feet seemed to glow blue and the ground around her in a few inches remained hard while everything in front and around it became soft as it took on a mud-like consistency. "Your power isn't bad; it got you in on recommendations but against me you've lost."
With that Nero just walked forward and activated Sealing in her feet every time she was about to step so that she sealed the ground back to hard as she walked effectively creating stepping stones for herself as she walked over the softened concrete as if it was nothing. She'd expected to have the dominant Quirk in this matchup but she'd not been able to confirm it until now and she had another thing planned because she wasn't going to let this imitation of Asta beat her.
"Damn you, what Quirk is that?" Honenuki said as he tried to adapt to it but he'd never encountered something that was in such direct contrast with his own so he was getting a little thrown by it. "How can you negate my softening."
"My Quirk is Sealing." Nero said as she kept walking at a slow pace. "It allows me to seal or unseal whatever I touch with my hands or feet. You can't beat me now that I'm shown to have the dominant Quirk in this matchup of contrasting Quirks."
"We'll see." Honenuki said as he took a deep breath and then dove into the ground.
"Interesting, well guess it's time to show more of what I can do." Nero said as she fell to a knee and paced her hands palms flat on the ground next to her as blue light brighter than she'd shown before emanated from her hands and feet at the same time. "I wasn't expecting to show this much this early but it's just a taste of what I can do."
As Nero spoke she forced her Quirk into the ground around her and sealed anything that wasn't solid and was in still part of the same thing that was in contact with her hands and feet so that she could make it hard again. So long as it was the same object, which in this case it was because it was the concrete battlefield, she could exert her Quirk all over it providing that there was something to seal or unseal and unnaturally soft concrete constituted something that she could seal and thus return it to its normal state.
Nero hadn't yet shown this aspect of her Quirk as it was part of what had happened in her past and she was trying not to reveal too much about that but in this match she could pass this off as she pushed her Quirk to its limit by infusing it into the concrete and sealing the material back to its true state. The only part of the battlefield that she didn't seal back to normal was area to her left and few feet away that she left soft for one specific purpose.
That purpose was of course to force Honenuki up for air as he'd need it, she presumed at least and also guessed that he had a breathing apparatus in his costume as that made the most sense to maximize this useful application of his Quirk, so she gave him that path as that wouldn't be lethal. That came a few second later as Honenuki burst from the ground splattering concrete as if it was water and panting hard as he tried and failed to soften the concrete around him so began to pull himself out of it.
However, the moment that he'd surfaced Nero activated Sealing again and sealed the ground around him, the blue light that was the sign of her Quirk being active passing over to him to do so and leaving him with only his upper body and right arm free. She had him now and she new it, it was just a matter of making sure he was at her mercy so that he'd surrender the battle.
"What the hell, I can't soften it." Honenuki said as he continued to slap his free hand fruitlessly on the concrete that was warped as Nero's sealing simply made it hard again not restored it to how it had been before Honenuki had softened it as Nero rose to her full height. "Usually I can adapt to changes on a battlefield but I can't work around this."
"It's hard to when Quirks are in opposition to each other, especially when it's not an obvious opposition like elemental based Quirks." Nero said as she walked over to him. "My pri…my friend taught me that before I came to U.A. though I never expected to be against a Quirk that is such a contrast to my own."
"If you think I'll surrender then I won't." Honenuki said and as Midnight hadn't called it so he knew he still had a chance to win this. "You…"
"Will show you that Sealing is more than it seems." Nero said as she reached Honenuki and grabbed his free wrist in her left hand before closing her right around his elbow and sealing the joints there so that they locked in place. "My family thought it was useless because it could only lock or unlock locks but he showed me that there was much more to what I could do than that."
"What did you do?" Honenuki said now completely thrown, his usual flexible mind gone against someone like this as Nero knelt down and did the same to his shoulder thus completely immobilizing his arm. "I can't move my arm."
"I told you, Sealing means that I can seal or unseal what I touch." Nero repeated as she knelt down before him and suddenly thrust her right hand out and grabbed Honenuki around the throat with it but didn't activate her Quirk as she gently squeezed to show that she had him. "That means that I can seal or unseal muscles for cramps, break or mend bones, lock up joints, seal eyelids or mouths shut as I've done to that little pervert in my class, or, well, I take it you can guess what I can do with my hand on your throat, right?"
"You can seal my windpipe up." Honenuki grunted out realizing what was going on. "Which would at the very least make me pass out."
"Yes I can so please just end this." Nero said her tone the same as it had been all match. "You're outmatched against me. A shame, you're clearly strong but I was the worst opponent you could possibly face other than Asta."
"Yeah I get this, a hero should know when he is beat." Honenuki coughed out. "You win, I surrender."
"Honenuki has given up." Midnight said with a crack of her flail and Nero released her grip on his throat and rose, unsealing his joints in the process and turning to walk off the battlefield. "Swallowtail is the winner."
Nero just sighed at that as she used her feet to unseal the concrete as she walked off the battlefield allowing Honenuki to get out behind her. She'd cast off that name but it was still here to stay on her records so she may as well put up with it.
Well, it didn't matter right now, she'd won and advanced but she really only cared so much because Honenuki sounded like Asta but clearly wasn't him so she had to make an example of him as the commentators discussed her win and how she had the dominant Quirk in the matchup, along with Oobleck going into a lengthy diatribe about the theory or inter-Quirk dominance. Nero ignored that, she'd be facing Tokoyami next, that could at least be interesting so she'd better get back to prepare for it.
"Well that was, er, different." Izuku said as he furiously made notes after the match ended and there was a slight pause to fix the aftereffects of Honenuki's Quirk on the battlefield that Nero's Quirk hadn't done anything about. "Did anyone know that she could do that?"
"Which part?" Weiss asked as she processed what she'd seen, Noelle would have asked that as well but she'd already left as she had the match after the one about to start so she needed to be in the waiting room for that. "That she could lock up parts of the body or that her sealing range is more than just the immediate vicinity of her hands and feet?"
"Both." Ochaco said as Izuku made notes. "I thought it was just a direct contact like my Quirk."
"Yeah that was unexpected." Izuku said as he analyzed it better now that he had a moment to think on it. "Interesting though as it seems like she can seal things that have been softened though it doesn't restore them to normal the way she can with broken bones but rather just restores its consistency. I wonder why that's the case, maybe because the material isn't actually broken just unstable but I'd have to ask her for more details. Whatever the case that match showed that Sealing was the dominant Quirk though I do wonder why and how. Was it just the surface level or deeper? So many questions to ask."
"Well I can answer some of them." Asta said. "Noelle and I have trained with Nero a lot over the last 2 weeks so we knew that she could seal parts of your body, I believe it's basically locking up joints and muscles, and as she's shown with Mineta she can seal your mouth or eyes shut so sealing a windpipe isn't out of the question for her either. That we knew, her range that we didn't know."
"Yeah she's been holding back somewhat if she can affect a greater area than just her immediate vicinity." Weiss said annoyed. "I just thought it was what she could touch but it seems like she can extend it over an area. That girl is full of mysteries."
"I presume that it only works if it is technically the same item or substance which makes sense and as all the concrete that was softened there was part of the battlefield that would explain it." Izuku said noting it. "Impressive and we've likely not seen it because she's not had the chance to use it on such a scale as I feel like the simplicity of the battlefield helped there. We shouldn't forget that she came 5th in the entrance exam, she's really showing it now."
The others nodded at that though Weiss was still a little contemplative. She liked Nero, the girl was a little blunt at times and not the most expressive, though she clearly took amusement in Noelle's crush on Asta, but she was loyal and good to be around. However, this was just another thing that didn't add up to Weiss.
First there had been how Nero was clearly born into the upper class given her tea drinking knowledge and mannerisms but was now a financial aid student, that made no sense. All that was confounded by the fact that Weiss's research the other day had revealed that while there had once been a Swallowtail family, it had died out some 175 years ago or so back during the early decades after the Advent and around the time of the founding of the Quirk Knights in the wake of the first Wizard King's sacrifice.
If Nero was part of that family then why'd they died out and why did she reject her family name rather than strive to reclaim it and its standing in society. Weiss knew that Nero had severed her past and foresworn her familial and given names but that just added to everything that was confusing about her.
Now there was this revelation, the girl's Quirk was a lot more than it seemed. It had always been like that as on the surface Sealing appeared to be a simple Quirk but Nero showed that it was hero worthy with a unique way of using it but she'd just shown that she had more to it. It all made the fact that Nero was in the rare camp of technically being a heteromorph given her horns but with an emitter class Quirk seem laughably irrelevant when compared to everything else about her.
Weiss had so many questions but she had no way of getting answers as Nero wouldn't give them, especially if she pried as the girl was very guarded about a lot of things. Thankfully she was broken from her thoughts by the sudden appearance of Monoma again.
"You may have gotten lucky there because of how Quirks work when in conflict with each other but you won't win the next one." Monoma said popping up now a little more cracked after another loss to Class A putting the head to heads between the classes at 5 to 2 but the remaining matches were also head to heads so his class had a chance to turn it around before the end of the first round. "You won't win the next one. That girl may be fast but she's not going to be able to handle Yanagi's Quirk."
"Please, Ruby's got this, she'll win within a minute." Weiss said dismissively as she defended her best friend. "She's not a recommended student for nothing after all and you seem to like to hype up all the recommended students in your class so don't overlook ours. There's no way that Ruby loses."
"Recommended means nothing as you lot keep proving." Monoma said. "We'll…"
"Again I apologize." Kendo said popping up having dragged Monoma down again before hitting him. "Good luck to you in the coming match."
"And to you." Weiss said to which Kendo nodded and fell back down to scold Monoma some more not that he seemed to be listening to her.
The others just blinked but before they could say anything the commentary began and they focused on the battle that was about to commence. Weiss knew that Ruby had this and the others agreed with her, this was going to be a fast battle for sure.
"Alright folks, the concrete is back to normal after that interesting battle of Quirk dominance so let's move on with the next match." As Ruby and Yanagi walked out into the arena and headed to the steps. "Next up we in the remaining inter Hero Class matchups that remain in the first round we have the speedy and recommended Ruby Rose representing Class 1-A, and we certainly remember her speed from the first event, while Class 1-B is represented by the spooky Reiko Yanagi. Thought my fellow commentators?"
"The start will determine this." Aizawa said as Ruby got in the zone, she had no idea what her opponent could do but she was going to win this the best way she could without her sweetheart in hand, by using her speed. "That's all."
"An astute and correct observation, Eraser." Oobleck said as the girls began to climb the stairs. "This isn't so much a matter of dominance like the last match but more reaction time and skill in how to apply your Quirk."
"Yes we shall see a good show, albeit a quick one." Port added as Ruby reached the top of the stairs. "The question really comes down to will speed overwhelm precision and power, an interesting contrast to see the results of."
Ruby just ignored that as she walked onto the battlefield and to her staring point taking a good look at the taller, silver haired girl before her. Yanagi had her hands out in front of her with limp wrists for some reason but Ruby didn't mind, it was her style, and Ruby didn't get any impressions on what her Quirk was from it which only added to her desire to end this match quickly so as to not find out what the other girl could do. If she did that then Yanagi's Quirk wouldn't matter in the end.
For her part Yanagi was a little nervous. She'd not shown off Poltergeist yet, well she'd used it strategically during the Obstacle Race but no one had noticed it, so that was her advantage but Rose had really shown off her Petal Burst Quirk. It was fast and the girl had excellent control over it so that was going to be an issue for Yanagi. It would all come down to the start and if she could get control of something as fast as Rose when she was in her Quirk.
"Good luck." Ruby said with a smile at Yanagi. "No hard feelings about how this plays out, right?"
"Er yeah, good luck to you too." Yanagi said blinking a bit, she didn't really care for the rivalry Monoma and Tetsutetsu had but she did want her class to do well and had played into the strategy.
"Well that was civil." Present Mic said. "And on that, begin!"
The girls reacted almost at the same time with Yanagi getting her arms up and glowing to grab hold of Rose, she presumed the shorter girl was lighter than her limit though Yanagi's limit wasn't much more than her own weight which she'd not divulge for multiple reasons. However, Ruby was a hair quicker as she pushed off the ground the moment she could and burst into her Quirk as soon as she had her forward momentum that would ensure she reached her top speed almost instantly.
The result was that she was too fast for Yanagi to handle and she literally sped through the attempted telekinetic hold to reach Yanagi in less than 4 seconds from the word 'begin'. Rather than try anything specific, though, Ruby just slammed into her with the front of her swirl the moment she reached Yanagi. The force of the blow drove the air from Yanagi's lungs and she gasped out as she was bent around Ruby's vortex and was carried back by it for a few feet before Ruby arced back and tossed Yanagi off it.
Yanagi couldn't recover from that as she flew through the air and then hit the concrete hard, bounced off it, and spun in the air before she hit it again and rolled over it and out of the back of the battlefield before she could stop herself. As this was happening Ruby was arching back in the air and then burst out of her Quirk to finish her flip in the air and fall the last part to the ground to land in a crouch with her arms spread and a smile on her face.
"Yanagi is out of the ring." Midnight declared with a crack of her flail. "Rose is the winner."
As Present Mic commented on that and the other commentators added their two cents about how Ruby's speed had been too quick for something as precise as Yanagi's Quirk to grab before Ruby hit her, Ruby rushed over to make sure that Yanagi was ok. They may be in rival classes and she may have won but the least she could do was make sure that the other girl wasn't too badly hurt after the match before she returned to her class and cheered on Noelle in the next battle.
"Go Rubes!" Yang yelled pumping her arms in the air as Ruby won while Blake leaned to the side to avoid getting hit by her best friend as she celebrated her little sister's win. "Man that was fast."
"It's Ruby, she tends to do things fast." Blake said as Ruby went over to help Yanagi up and they chatted as Ruby helped her off the field in a great display of sportsmanship. "Though does anyone know what Quirk she was facing. She kinda just blew through it I feel."
"No but it was clearly not able to overcome that speed." Hado said. "So cool! I wonder what happens when she turns into that swirl, like how does it work?"
"Yeah Ruby's like that." Yang said with a smirk. "She's advanced and next up is either going to be a Vermillion or a Silva of all families. Any idea who she'd face guys? Those are two of the three big Quirk Knight families."
"They are but aren't the Silvas tied to Shiketsu more so than even the Schnees are?" Hado asked putting a finger on her chin as she thought about it. "Why is one here?"
"Apparently it has to do with her control issues." Magna said. "I learned that in the wake of the USJ incident as she was one of the ones who ended up in the same sector that I was sent to. She's got a seriously powerful water Quirk as is expected within her family though her eldest brother and the future patriarch has a metal based Quirk from his mother. However, Silva lacks control over it, at least offensively, but why that meant that she had to be sent here I don't know."
"They're an elite Quirk Knight family so we can't even begin to fathom their reasons for things." Blake said. "But if she's water and this Vermillion is fire like most of the main line then that will be interesting."
"True but I just care who wins." Yang said grinning and pounding a fist into her palm. "Because whoever does will be facing Ruby in the next round and that will be as far as he or she goes because Rubes isn't losing."
"I hope it's Silva." Blake said. "She seems friendly with Ruby as Ruby said that she's part of her little group so it would be nice and I think facing each other is a good thing."
"True though I'd rather her face Schnee, and admit something about her feelings." Yang said. "Still, facing friends is good remember last year?"
"No and I'd rather forget about it or that laser pointer that you used." Blake said her cheeks going red at the memory of how Yang had beaten her in the tournament the year before as the next students walked out. "Now shut it Yang and see who Ruby will be facing next."
Yang did just that as the third years of Class 3-A fell silent to see who would win the coming match. So far the first year matches had been decent but they all knew that the first round was usually pretty quick, it wouldn't be until the next one that things picked up with those who'd already secured one victory and Yang for one couldn't wait to see who Ruby would beat then as the commentators began their commentary for the match.
"Well that was as expected, quick and simple." Nero said having returned in time to see the match while they heard Monoma rage next to them but he didn't pop up this time it seemed. "Rose's speed overcame whatever Yanagi could do and she used brute force to blast her out. That was the only surprise but she was going for a quick win so it makes sense that she'd not bother stopping."
"It was a little more blunt than I expected." Izuku said as he noted it in his notebook. "But interesting, she can strike in that form as well, I didn't know that. Petal Burst is a lot more than it seems."
"I knew that Ruby would win." Weiss said with a smile as she'd had no doubts in her best friend and couldn't wait for her to get back so that she could congratulate Ruby. "A little crasser than usual but in this case it seems that speed and force were what was needed so who am I to question her methods."
"Ha, she may have overcome Yanagi's Poltergeist Quirk but that's only because she sped past it before Yanagi could get a good hold on Rose." A now really losing it Monoma said as he popped up but most of Class 1-A just ignored him at this point though some of them groaned as they'd hoped that he wouldn't pop up this time. "Leo's got power on his side and he's from House Vermillion, he won't lose."
"And Noelle's from House Silva and awesome, her water will win this over whatever he has to offer." Asta said defensively and Nero wished Noelle had been there to hear it as she'd have gone red and freaked though it was a really nice thing to say and showed how much support Asta had in his friend. "Just you watch."
"Well I hear that Silva is only here and not at Shiketsu like the rest of her family because she can't control her Quirk, what a failure." Monoma retorted. "Why she's…"
"Sorry, we'll tie him down now as knocking him out isn't working." Kendo said as she dragged him down, knocked him out, and popped her head over. "Don't worry, this will be a good match seeing as it's a Silva verses a Vermillion and U.A.'s never hosted that kind of matchup so best of luck in it."
"Er…" Asta said but Kendo was already done and had dropped down to head out as she was next to fight after Noelle.
"Let's just watch." Nero said as Noelle and Leo walked out and the commentary began. "Noelle will need to be sensible and smart to win. She still lacks offensive control of her Quirk so I wonder how she'll win it."
"This will be good regardless." Izuku said as he began to make more notes. "It's rare to see two of the Quirk Knight Great Houses face off so there's a lot we can learn from this, especially because I'm sure this is water verses fire."
The others nodded at that as they sat back for the next battle, the round slowly winding down but two of their friends still had to go as Ochaco was after Noelle hence why she wasn't with them at the moment. So far things had gone well for their group but this would be the toughest of their matches so far due to Noelle's control issues. Regardless, Asta had faith in Noelle and let out a cheer for her as she reached the battlefield showing his support as the battle was about to begin.
"All right folks it's time for a matchup that we never thought we'd see at the U.A. Sports Festival!" Present Mic said his excitement greater than it had been so far and to Noelle it sounded like the crowd gave an extra-large cheer at that as she walked out of the entrance on her side and to the battlefield as Leo did the same on the other side. "For the first time ever, two of the three great Quirk Knight houses are about to go at it in the final event of the Sports Festival as the fiery Leopold Vermillion of House Vermillion and Class 1-B faces off against his fellow Hero Course student from Class 1-A and House Silva, Noelle Silva!"
Present Mic paused there for a moment as the crowd roared at the implications of it. Noelle didn't really want to have the focus be that, especially with hers and Leo's brothers watching this, but it was clear that she'd have to deal with it. Hopefully that would be it and Present Mic wouldn't add how she'd ended up at U.A. but alas that was not to be the case.
"That's right folks, this is what I was alluding to earlier as this year doesn't just have the first Schnee to attend U.A. but the first Silva as well." Present Mic said to the cheering crowd. "And to top this battle off, this as good as a recommended student matchup as Vermillion is a recommended student and Silva the special exemption student which is akin to being recommended only there was a specific reason why she needed that exemption."
"Did he need to mention that." Noelle said with a sigh. "Though at least he did say that it was as good as recommended which makes it sound a little better than that I'm a failure with no control over her Quirk."
"It's been a while since we had a special exemption student at U.A." Present Mic continued. "So what can we expect from this guys?"
"Silva is here because there was a space for the exemption and with her Quirk I was the best teacher to ensure that she reached her full potential as a hero though she has a classmate who's better at that than me." Aizawa said as Noelle and Leo reached the stairs and began climbing. "That's why we have the first scion of House Silva to attend U.A. in our first years."
"Yes and she's already improved proving that the Principal was right to admit her via that route so this is going to be a good match for sure." Oobleck added as the combatants reached the top of the steps and entered the battlefield. "And it's a classic as both have Quirks in line with what their houses are famous for."
"Too true, fire v. water and control v. power." Port added as the two scions of great Quirk Knight Houses reached their respective starting points. "This will be interesting to say the least."
"You know that I have as much power as you do, Noelle." Leo said with a grin. "So I won't let that intimate me. Nor will I let the fact that you're a water Quirk user, if I want to be the Wizard King one day I'll have to be able to counter that weakness just as my siblings have managed to do."
"I'm here to prove that I belong Leo, beating you will show that and I'll beat you even if I've only gained a little control." Noelle said as she reached to her side and pulled her wand off the strap around her waist to hold it to her right side. "I'm not the failure I used to be, I'll show you and everyone that now."
"Then bring it." Leo said still grinning as he got ready to take down Noelle. "I'm not holding back."
"I expect no less." Noelle said.
"Begin!" Present Mic suddenly said interrupting the chat and the moment he did Leo raise his hands and blasted swirls of flames from his palms right at Noelle.
Knowing that she had to act fast, Noelle surprised everyone by rushing the fire as a ball of water collected at the end of her wand before she suddenly leapt to the side of the flames right as they were about to hit her and leveled her wand at Leo as she did. She felt the heat of the flames pass her but ignored them as she blasted a jet of water at her opponent from her support item before she landed back on the concrete.
This was a deliberate move to see what Leo would do and he didn't disappoint her as he stopped his flames to turn to her and didn't move so that the jet veered to the right to miss him as he expected. Noelle also expected this, within their circles her utter lack of control and accuracy was legendary because of how much of a failure it made her so it was only natural for Leo to not feel threatened by it.
"Still the same as before I see, Noelle." Leo said with a grin as the water missed him. "This will be…wait what."
"I've been at U.A. long enough to begin to learn that control doesn't have to mean offensive power and I've managed that because I have friends who support me." Noelle said as rather than the water splashing down on the ground, it looped around Leo, Noelle mentally controlled it to do so, so that it formed a ring around him of high speed water that she'd cut off so that she still had some water in her bag as she used her wand to direct the water that was out. "And I don't need attacks to beat you, well water attacks that is."
Leo just grinned as the swirls of fire appeared in his hands but before he could blast them out the water ring around him burst and quickly formed into a dome of water all around him with swirls in it that kept the water moving. It was a creative use of the one thing Noelle could do with her Quirk, the water dome, but rather than use it to protect her from Leo's fire she was using it to trap him in it. It also showed just how strong it was as he blasted fire at it only for it to be extinguished by the roiling water but not before creating a lot of steam that blinded him inside the dome.
That was exactly what Noelle had expected as for all of Leo's power he was still pretty impatient and tended to just blast fire rather than be tactical. That was how Noelle had been able to trap him and the moment that the steam formed she rushed forward and at the dome of water.
As she did she saw more light inside and knew that Leo was going for something bigger but rather than hold the water in the dome she released her control over it so that it collapsed down and drenched Leo in it extinguishing his flames and soaking him before he could act. That had the added benefit of distracting him as he blinked and spluttered from the sudden exposure to cold water.
All this was part of Noelle's grand plan to win this and as she'd timed her run to reach him as he shook the water out of his eyes to see her there. That was all he got before Noelle planted her left foot and swing her right one up to kick him squarely between the legs and right in balls with as much force as she could muster.
It was an extremely low blow but with Noelle's accuracy issues when it came to using her water she had to get up close and use a physical contact move to beat him. However, because Leo was a guy so naturally stronger than her and the fact that Noelle had absolutely not combat experience she had only one choice to beat him and that was going for the weak spot all men had.
"Sorry Leo." Noelle said and she meant it as she drew her leg back and Leo's eyes went wide as his hands went to his crotch to cup his testicles. "This was the only way I could beat you at the moment and I had to beat you."
Leo wasn't able to get any words out as the pain overloaded him and he fell to his knees still clutching his balls before he toppled to the side, eyes white and foam coming from his mouth as he hit the ground. He lay there twitching for a moment before it became clear that he was done for.
"Vermillion Leo is unable to battle." Midnight said with a crack of her flail. "And with that low but valid blow Silva wins."
"Ouch, that hurt and I'm just watched it." Present Mic said as Noelle turned and walked off, she'd apologize to Leo again later but he needed to be healed first and the robots were coming out for him. "But a valid blow, many female villains will go for the junk so boys make sure that you have crotch protection in your costumes."
Noelle droned out as she made her way off the battle field while the commentators discussed the need for testicular protection in the field. It wasn't the most dignified way of winning a match but she didn't care, she'd won and what's more she'd beaten a Vermillion which showed that she was improving at U.A. Of course next up was Rose and that strategy wouldn't work with her, plus the girl was a recommended student like Leo with some decent close combat skills so Noelle would need a plan for that.
That was for later, for now she was going to enjoy her win as she walked out of the arena to rejoin her class. Hopefully Asta would praise her for winning and how she used her Quirk, that would be nice not that she wanted his praise of course.
"Ha, my guaranteed new member has got an interesting style to her." Yami said with a bark of a laugh from the booth that contained the 9 Quirk Knight Squad Captains who all sat in it with spaces between them as they watched the matches though up until this point they'd not had much to note other than the talent of that Yuno kid who was clearly going down their path after his pledge and already several were planning on making him an internship offer while ruling Asta out due to his loud attitude and uncertainty over what his Quirk could do. "I'll admit, I wasn't expecting her to do that. Damn Fuegoleon, your little bro got hit hard. Thankfully Recovery Girl's one of the best around, I'm sure he'll still be able to have kids."
"It was a low blow for sure." The serious, red haired man said from a seat to Yami's left. "The pain and humiliation of it, and losing to a Silva on top of it, will teach him many things that I alone cannot teach him. It is good that he learns now before he goes into the field. I'll give it to my rival's little sister; she's got a unique style."
"She'll fit right in with the Black Bulls." Yami said. "She didn't even use an attack in that, just defense to counter his fire and that low blow."
"Ke, ke, it was interesting from that girlie." A scrawny, black haired man with a red scar on the left side of his face said from Yami's other side his tongue out as he spoke. "But I'd like to see some more slashing in this. Haven't seen much of that but those boys who could turn their bodies to steel and rock, especially the latter, look interesting to me. I want to see if I can slice them with my Quirk, oh yes I do. I'll try and tempt them down our path so that I can see how long it takes to slice through their Quirks."
"And you're being a freak again." Yami said though coming from a super sadist like Jack the Ripper, the Captain of the Green Praying Mantis Squad that was normal. "Still, there's some talent here for sure, better than most years."
"Some perhaps but it is undignified for a lady to win like that." Charlotte said from behind Yami her attitude slightly thorny at what Yami was saying. "Fitting for a ruffian like you. I'm just surprised a major House like House Silva churned her out."
"That was a fair blow Charlotte but whatever, I'll take her any day, she's going to be good once she's trained up in the right environment." Yami said. "Just because she's not all high and mighty about being a warrior woman who needs no man like you doesn't mean that she's not qualified. I've never had a failure of her caliber before, it will be interesting to see how she interacts with the rest of the Squad. Some of the others do as well, could be a good year for me here like it was two years ago."
No one responded to that mainly because the next match was about to start though in Charlotte Roselei's case she was bright red at what Yami had said and wasn't looking at him while fighting her inner turmoil. The Captain of the all-woman, and notoriously misandrist, Blue Rose Knights had a reputation for being all about woman power and the fact that she didn't need a man in her life but all that was just on the outside. On the inside Charlotte was a total mess mainly because she was hopelessly in love with Yami after he saved her when her Quirk suddenly awakened and almost killed her a decade ago.
Since then Charlotte had silently burned the torch of love for Yami in her chest so when he said things like that it cut her as she fought the situation she was in. She could at least admit to herself that she loved him but her views and history made it clear that she couldn't be open about loving a man, especially a man like Yami Sukehiro. How would her Squad react to a revelation like that, not good she felt and as such she was torn and dealing with that at the moment.
The other not paying attention to Yami was Noelle's own brother, Nozel. He agreed that it was undignified and low blow for Noelle to win like that but a win over a Vermillion was still solid for their House and she'd shown some control over Hydromancy which she'd never shown before.
Noelle was still a failure by Silva standards and Nozel had his issues to deal with and why he couldn't truly face his youngest sibling but he was at least a little bit proud of how she'd gained some control over her Quirk as it seemed that U.A. was looking like the right choice after all. He could ponder more later; the next match was starting and the Quirk Knight Captains looked on at it to see if the participants could be wooed to their branch of hero work.
"That was low." Ida said with a wince at Noelle's finishing move. "To go for a man's testicles like that, it's unspeakable."
"It's a valid strategy when you're outmatched like that." Nero said as most of the guys present continued to wince in sympathetic pain for what Leo had gone through as the robots reached him to take him away. "Noelle can't hit the broad side of a barn with her water at the moment, though she did get creative with how she applied it there, and when it comes to hand to hand combat, well she's got no skills there so she needed something to beat Vermillion and as he's a guy she used the typical male weakness against him. At times you have no choice but to go low."
"True, as my sister would say, there are no rules in a fist fight with a villain, or a bar fight for that matter and she gets into those pretty regularly as well." Ruby said, she'd returned in time to see the blow and give her thoughts on it. "That won't work against me though, I don't have balls."
"No, Noelle will have to fight you fairly and with dignity." Weiss said saving her praise for Ruby's win for later as now wasn't the time. "But I'll give it to her, she won and that's what counts."
"Plus she used her Quirk to set it all up which was an improvement." Asta said. "I'd have never thought to use it like that against someone, she's really coming along well. I'll let her know when she returns."
"Very true." Izuku said with a nod as he made notes on the battle while Nero got ready to enjoy Noelle's reaction to Asta praising her victory to her face. "That tactic of using her water dome to drench him would work best against Vermillion as he has a fire Quirk but I can see it being useful in other situations. The low blow aside, she did well."
"Silva only won because of that low blow; without it Leo would have won that match." Monoma said as he popped his head up. "But next up is Kendo, she's out class rep and she'll win with ease just you watch."
"I have the utmost faith in Uraraka." Izuku said his conviction in his friend clear. "She'll win."
"Yeah well…" Monoma said before he was suddenly dragged down by his classmates and knocked out with a little more force than Kendo would use so he was out of it for the rest of the first round not that Class A minded as it was getting rather annoying.
Without Kendo no one popped up to apologize, not that they cared. Right now their class was doing well and there were two more matches left in the first round so they settled in for the next one. Izuku was sure that Uraraka would do this so he leaned forward to support his friend as she won and advanced even if he was nervous about the next round for her given who she was likely to face in that round. They'd deal with that hurdle in time though. For now it was time to support Uraraka as she walked into the arena to face off against Kendo.
"It's time fore the penultimate match of the first round!" Present Mic said as Ochaco and Kendo, she knew who Kendo was by this point after all the Monoma chops and subsequent apologies that she'd done during the first round, walked out of their respective sides and headed to the battlefield. "This is going to be a good one as we see the Class Rep and big sister of Class 1-B, the fighting Itsuka Kendo, against her fellow Hero Course girl, from Class 1-A, the girl who can defy gravity itself, Ochaco Uraraka! As always any color commentary from my fellow commentators regarding the coming match is greatly appreciated."
"Contact will be key in this matchup." Aizawa said simply. "Whoever lands the first hit will win it."
"Precisely, both girls have close combat, hand localized, Quirks." Oobleck said as the girls climbed the steps to the battlefield. "So a lot will come down to the first exchange."
"That is an oversimplification of what is to come but I concur with the others on how this match will play out." Port said as the girls entered the arena and made their way to their starting points. "The first contact is key here."
Ochaco wasn't sure how that all applied to her opponent as she got ready for the coming match. She didn't know much about Kendo other than that she clearly had some martial arts skills given the chops she'd been delivering to Monoma which had caused her to think about improving her own hand to hand skills as she had none, but for Ochaco contact was what she needed.
If Kendo was also a close combat specialist then that worked to her advantage because all she needed to do was get her finger pads on Kendo and she'd won the battle. It was a simple but effective plan that Ochaco intended on executing.
Kendo meanwhile was in a similar boat. She knew that Uraraka's Quirk was related to gravity somehow, if she recalled Uraraka was the girl who'd registered a score of infinity in her class's ball toss during their Quirk Assessment which meant that she could negate gravity in some sense, but Kendo didn't know how Uraraka did that.
It didn't matter though, with Big Fist Kendo could add to her raw power and martial arts prowess to deliver a single, devastating, blow with her Quirk that would win the match for her and let her advance. She may not care for Monoma's rivalry stuff but she was the Class Rep and had pride in, and love for, her class, so she fully intended on winning her match and advancing.
"No hard feeling about Monoma, right?" Kendo said as the girls got ready. "I know he can be a bit of a handful but he's a good guy deep down, he's just passionate about our class. I think we should all get along as future heroes though so let's have a friendly battle."
"Agreed." Ochaco said with a nod and a smile. "Though I'll still win."
"I like your determination because I share it." Kendo said with a grin. "This will be…"
"Begin!" Present Mic said starting the match and interrupting Kendo in the process.
The moment he said begin, Ochaco rushed Kendo as fast as she could with her hands out and to her sides palms facing Kendo as she ran. For her part Kendo had no idea what style this was but she wasn't one to not capitalize on what she perceived to be an opening and she did that now as she took a ready stance side on, left hand out in front of her and right arm back ready to deliver a fast, precise, palm strike the moment she could. She'd enlarge her hand at the last moment to deliver the strong blow that would knock Uraraka back and hopefully beat her in one blow by sending her out the back of the battlefield.
That was Kendo's plan at least but it didn't exactly go as she'd planned as she thrust her arm forward to strike as soon as Uraraka was in range, her fist getting bigger at the last moment to land it with more force. That, however, was what would do her in as the greater surface area her enlarged hand had was perfect for Ochaco as she brought her hands up, palms out, to intersect Kendo's hand with both of her own.
As such, all 10 of her finger pads made contact allowing Ochaco to activate her Quirk the moment they did, and instantly made Kendo weightless, her body floating up and off the ground. The added effect of that was that when Ochaco made Kendo weightless all the momentum from her strike vanished thus preventing Ochaco from taking any damage as Kendo's palm thrust caused her to pitch forward with a wide eyed look of surprise on her face.
"Your finger pads, that's what they're for." Kendo said realizing where Ochaco's Quirk was located as she tried to move her enlarged right hand to slap Ochaco but it wasn't easy to move when you were weightless. "You remove gravity from what you touch with them."
"Correct and now you're essentially weightless so unless you can move in the air this match is mine." Ochaco said as she moved to the side and forward to avoid Kendo's hand and grabbed her ankle as she planted her feet. "Because now that your no longer under the effects of gravity I can do this to you."
At that Ochaco spun on her heel a few times with Kendo still in her grip before she let go to toss Kendo to the side and out of the ring in seconds thanks to the effects of Ochaco's Quirk. As Midnight didn't say anything the moment Kendo flew over the white line, Ochaco brought her hands together and touched all her finger pads to each other.
"Release." Ochaco said removing the effects of her Quirk and gravity once again took hold of Kendo as she flew and now fell to crash to the grass past the raised part of the ring where Kendo rolled over it as Ochaco secured the clear victory.
"Kendo is out of bounds." Midnight said with a crack of her flail. "Uraraka is the winner."
Ochaco hurried over to make sure Kendo was ok. It had been a hard fall so she had to make sure the other girl was good as the commentators commented on it and how it was all down to that first contact to determine it and the mistake that Kendo made in letting Ochaco get her finger pads on her. Ochaco didn't pay attention to it as she helped Kendo to her feet smiling at advancing to the next round while trying not to think about who she might face there.
"What I don't get is why didn't the palm strike do more the moment it hit her." Ojiro asked as the match ended with another victory for their class. "That should have broken bones in Uraraka's hands and wrists given the power I saw behind it. I can tell that Kendo is an expert in hand to hand combat just from that single move."
"Uraraka's Quirk removes gravity on what she touches so when she activates it momentum is killed thus negating any damaging effect it might have." Izuku said simply as he scribbled in his notebook on the page he'd created for Kendo though he didn't have much to go on from what he'd seen. "And Kendo gave her a big target with that large hand. That's how Uraraka won. If Kendo had realized that Uraraka's Quirk was in her hands, or more precisely the pads of her fingers, then maybe she'd have avoided it, with that Quirk of hers she can likely deliver a lot of force and Uraraka is not physically resistant so a superior marital artist has the edge on her providing that she doesn't let Uraraka's fingers touch her."
"It was two hand based Quirk Factors, well Uraraka's are more localized than that but its close enough." Nero said simply. "Came down to who landed it the right way and Uraraka was the one who managed it. I know how hard it is to work with a hand based, close contact, Quirk though I have my feet as well with adds to what I can do so I've got a little more versatility than those two have."
"My swords could have handled that." Asta said simply. "Uraraka can't make them float and I'm sure a hit from them would negate the effects of her Quirk."
"Your swords nullify Quirks, of course they can handle it." Noelle said. "You're one of the favorites for a reason, Asta. Don't let that go to your head or read into that though."
"I wonder what would happen if Uraraka used it when I was in full burst, or just used it on me in general." Ruby mused as Asta looked confused at what Noelle had said while Nero just sighed at it. "It could make me fly."
"Very likely." Izuku said. "You're Quirk offers you some minimal flight to begin with, Rose, so with Zero Gravity on you as well it would be flight in some sense."
"We should try it then." Ruby said excitedly. "It would be so cool to properly fly."
"Later, Ruby, we're still in the Sports Festival and there's one more match in the first round." Weiss said. "Midoriya, any idea who'd win it?"
"Kacchan doesn't quit, he'll be tough to beat and his analytical skills and battlefield adjustment are right at the top of the class despite what his personality may imply." Izuku said. "So he'll probably win it depending on what Pine can do. Anyone know?"
Those around Izuku all shook their heads at that as no one knew what Pine could do. Ruby and Weiss were pretty sure that he was a Huntsman track student so he likely had weapon experience, though they had no clue what kind of weapon he used, but his Quirk was a total unknown. That added to the intrigue of this final match and with Monoma apparently out cold they didn't get any taunting from him though he had mentioned earlier that Pine was one of their better combatants so that was something to consider.
"Then it will come down to what he can do." Izuku said as the commentary for the final match began and he turned to one of the few remaining blank pages in his notebook to make another new entry in it. "I can't wait to see that though; I hope it's good and can give Kacchan a challenge."
The others just nodded at that as Bakugo and Pine walked out for the final match of the first round. It had been a wild, hectic, and intense first round to the final event of their first Sports Festival with several interesting battles and now it was time to see how it all ended as the last match was about to start.
"At long last, after so many exciting and memorable battles we've reached the final one of the first round!" Present Mic said his enthusiasm still the same as it had been at the start as Bakugo and Oscar walked out to the cheering of the crowds, Oscar nervous given Bakugo's personality, Bakugo just bored and ready to deal with this extra. "First up, from the Hero Course's Class 1-A, he was a bit of a hot shot when he was in middle school but he's been consistently fourth in everything be it the entrance exam, the Obstacle Race, or the Cavalry Battle, it's Katsuki Bakugo. Facing him is the Huntsman track student who like Rose was recommended by Ozpin himself, from the Hero Course's Class 1-B, the man of energy himself, Oscar Pine!"
Bakugo growled at that. He didn't need to be reminded of how he was constantly coming in 4th place in the Sports Festival, or the entrance exam for that matter, when he should be winning all the events. That would change though, he fully intended to win the tournament and thus the whole Sports Festival and it started with this extra he was facing as he climbed the steps ready to explode his first of 5 opponents who stood between Bakugo and finally proving that he was going to be the next number 1 hero.
"Bakugo really looks determined." Present Mic said as the boys reached the top of the steps. "Any idea on how this will go?"
"Yes but I won't say." Mr. Aizawa said simply. "There's a clear path to victory for both and it will come down to one factor that will determine it."
"I concur, tactics and knowledge of the nature of Quirks will be key here." Oobleck said. "And as Pine was recommended by Ozpin I want to really see what he can do against someone like Bakugo."
"There's a lot to look forward to here especially with the Quirks that these boys have." Port said as both boys walked onto the battlefield and made their ways to their starting points. "A good match to end the first round on."
"I won't hold back, extra, so if you want to quit now's your one chance to do before I murder you." Bakugo said as they came to a stop and faced off, the boy opposite him looking nervous at what Bakugo was saying to him. "I don't care for your status or that you were on that team that stole the 10 million headband last round, yeah I noted that, I'm winning this match."
"I've heard of your reputation and I'm more than ready for it." Oscar said as she steeled himself for what was to come, Ozpin had told him that he'd face villains and Grimm alike that would unnerve him so he needed to be ready for them and Bakugo was just like that so this was a good place to start. "I have a lot to live up to with being here, I won't let down my sponsor."
"Alright folks it's time to end the first round of the final event." Present Mic said cutting any remaining chatter off. "Begin!"
Almost instantly Bakugo blasted forward with his Explosion Quirk before pulling up short as he swing his arms forward and unleashed a barrage of explosions on the extra he was facing. He was going for the hard and fast approach but just as he started to unload on his opponent there was a flicker of green light but that could only be seen for a moment before the explosions rained down and obscured the boy in front of him.
His attack only lasted a moment; Bakugo had noted the light and his gut told him that he shouldn't waste his Quirk too much the moment he saw it but only use it to test out what he was facing and he trusted his gut. That's why he cut his barrage short and when the smoke cleared his feeling was confirmed, the extra was in a green sphere of energy that protected him from Bakugo's explosions leaving him unharmed and showing that the sphere was strong as well as it too was unmarred by Bakugo's attack.
"Interesting, you're a bit more than I'd have expected." Bakugo said as he stood before the sphere assessing it for a moment and talking aloud as he deduced what the extra could do. "You can create a barrier of sorts that can withstand my explosions. That's not bad but if it's strong enough for that then I bet that this takes a lot out of you to make and maintain it. I wonder, how long can you hold it knowing I'll blast you the moment it ends."
Oscar knew that his face gave away his concern when he saw Bakugo smirk as he finished speaking. This was not a matchup he'd been hoping for given Bakugo's personality and mentality but he thought he could defend and use that to his advantage by forcing Bakugo to exhaust himself with fruitless attacks that got more and more intense the more frustrated he got, which would only force Bakugo to hit his limit sooner, before Oscar chose the right moment for a swift counter attack that would win the battle for him.
Alas it seemed like he couldn't do that as Bakugo had already figure out that Oscar couldn't hold the barrier for long. Personal Energy was a strong Quirk and gave Oscar a lot of offensive power and defensive protection but it required his stockpiled energy reserved to use and while he'd yet to use his Quirk today until this moment, as well as having a hearty lunch to maximize his reserves, there was a limit to how long he could maintain a sphere as it was draining.
As such the best strategy was to shift his Quirk from defensive to its internal form that both protected him and boosted his strength, speed, and resistance so that he could take the fight to Bakugo. That's exactly what Oscar did dropping the sphere before quickly activating Personal Energy over his whole body and charging as Bakugo got his hands up in fists ready for some hand to hand combat. The goal was to use the speed boost to his advantage to reach and punch Bakugo before he could move to win this with a single, Quirk enhanced, blow.
That, however, was not to be the case as Bakugo, rather than blast him in the face as Oscar expected, blasted the ground and flipped over Oscar as he charged, turning to blast him in the back. The force of the blow staggered Oscar forward and destroyed part of his shirt but the ripple of green light over his skin showed that his Quirk had absorbed the blow. That intrigued Bakugo as he landed and Oscar turned to Bakugo to charge again only before he could Bakugo unleased a massive flurry of explosions right at Oscar, the distance such that he couldn't avoid it while the force such that it held Oscar back.
"That Quirk of yours can boost your body and protect you as well as being used to project that sphere thing." Bakugo said as he blasted away. "But I've got you figured out; you can't fight in a prolonged battle with a power like that no matter how you use it. You're like Kirishima in a way, good for small bursts but if I can outlast it you're no stronger than an average, Quirkless, human. Quirks are physical abilities too, there's a limit to what you can do so let's see which will hold out longer, yours or mine."
Oscar had gotten his arms up to block the explosions as he tried to push forward through them to Bakugo as that was the only way to go if he wanted to win this before he burned through his energy reserves. He couldn't go to the side or retreat, his Quirk wouldn't hold up long enough and Bakugo's range would enable him to keep up so he had to push forward but even with Personal Energy active, all it did was protect him, it didn't mitigate the force of the blows so he was trying to move against the explosions but it was slow going.
Add in that the more damage Personal Energy took the shorter he could hold it for as more of his energy was burned to maintain his Quirk and the end result was inevitable. It was clear that Oscar was going to have to train harder to get stronger in the future.
The moment the battle shifted came as Bakugo was forced to take a few steps back to keep distance between them and his barrage, his wrist starting to sting a little from the constant explosions but he knew that with a Quirk like what this extra had he could outlast him, which was shown when there was a sudden bursting of green light as if it was shattered and fizzled off the extra's body. The moment that happened Oscar let out a yell of pain as the explosions overwhelmed him and he staggered back, PE kit shredded by this point, and now feeling the explosions full force.
Bakugo ended his barrage and lunged forward bringing up his right hand in front of him so that as Oscar staggered back he was right in front of the extra to unleash an even more powerful blast right into the other boy's chest from point blank range. Oscar felt the blow but that was the last thing he felt before he was blasted back and hit the ground hard to slide on his back for a few feet before he came to a stop out cold on the ground, his PE kit ruined and body covered in superficial burns from Bakugo's final assault.
"Pine has been knocked out." Midnight declared with a crack of her flail. "Bakugo is the winner. That is the end of the first round."
At that the crowd cheered but Bakugo didn't pay attention to that, he just turned and walked off the battlefield with his usual expression on his face as the robots moved to collect Oscar and take him to Recovery Girl. He'd advanced and done so against a so called recommended student, that was good but he needed to win more and next up was rosy cheeks, the infuriating girl who clearly had a thing for Deku. He'd beat her and whoever was after her as he showed all that he was the future number one by winning the Sports Festival.
"Alright folks, the first round of the final event is over and now 16 students remain in the first year's Sports Festival." Present Mic said as the board showed the advancements of the winners in the bracket while the losers names went gray to show that they'd been knocked out of the tournament. "There's going to be a little break now but we'll be back soon with the first battle of the second round. See you then."
With that the commentary was cut off and there was a general buzz in the stadium and chatting amongst the spectators and students about how that first round had gone and who was the favorite of the 16 remaining while people got up to get food, use the facilities, and generally stretch their legs before the next round started. There had been some good performances, some better than others, and as such there was a lot of discussion about the matches to come based on what had been seen so far.
This included in Class A's box but Izuku wasn't joining in with it as those who'd already lost got animated over who of their class would do well now that 12 of the 16 remaining were in their class so they had strong odds of winning this. He'd heard of how Ojiro had lost to Shinso though he'd not seen it and as such he was nervous about his coming match. He was facing that guy next and he needed to be ready for whatever it was that allowed him to beat Ojiro without even moving.
"Midoriya." A voice said breaking Izuku from his thoughts and he turned to see Ojiro in the seat behind him a serious look on his face. "You got a moment?"
"Sure, I need to head to the waiting room anyway so that I'm there when the next round starts." Izuku said knowing that Ojiro was the person he needed to talk to most and rose as he fully turned to his classmate. "Walk with me?"
"Of course." Ojiro said standing as well. "You should know what you're up against though there's only so much help I can provide. That Shinso kid, I've never faced anything like what he can do."
"Alright tell me." Izuku said as they walked out to head to the waiting room while the others chatted around them. "What can he do? How'd he beat you?"
"Well for starters, I don't actually remember most of the match." Ojiro said as they left the box. "One moment I'm responding to Shinso's taunts as I'm charging him ready to hit him with my tail, the next I'm out in front of the stairs I climbed to enter the ring no longer in it having just walked out to lose. It was like…"
At that Ojiro gave Izuku his impression of the match and what he thought Shinso did to trigger his Brainwashing Quirk, along with what Brainwashing did. It was a powerful Quirk and clear to Izuku why Shinso was a recommended student so Izuku listened closely as they walked and mentally prepared himself for the next round.
He had to be ready to face Shinso and win so that he could continue to advance through the Sports Festival. Little did Izuku know that what was about to happen would be big for both boys, as well as for the future of One for All in a way, as the Sports Festival's final event moved into its second round.
Damn was that a long one, a new record across all 30 of my stories by almost 4,000 words, which given that I've published over 800 chapters across those 30 stories is saying something but I felt like this chapter couldn't be broken up as I wanted to do a chapter for each round so they will get shorter as the tournament goes on, well shorter in comparison to this chapter as they're still going to be long for the next round or two even by this story's standards. There actually isn't that much to say about the battles, they were for the most part straightforward as it is the first round and this style of battles and reactions to it will continue throughout the tournament. This will include the canon battles which will be like the ones in this round and as those battles will be a little more frequent they'll shorten things a bit but as you can guess the other two franchises crossed into this story will cause changes as they've already done. The only other thing to mention is that there were several VA jokes to make and most are straightforward what with Leo and Monoma, Shiozaki and Mimosa, and Honenuki and Asta sharing VAs so they were there (Asta actually shares a VA with a second Class B kid but that will couldn't be made yet) however there was one deeper reference and that was with Tetsutetsu. As some of you may have noticed, he was beaten very similarly to how Asta delivered the final blow on Vetto and that was deliberate as Tetsutetsu shares a VA with Vetto (as does Snipe) so I felt that a deeper reference like that would be good. There was an even deeper reference there as well but I'll be making that one (along with others like it) clearer after the Sports Festival. Anyway, that is all that I have for this massive chapter so I will leave it off here. If you like this story please follow, favorite (this story and me) to keep up with it and leave a review or PM, your support is what helps motivate me to keep up this work and any questions posed before the next chapter is uploaded I will try to answer. Until next time.
