Talking About

By B.L.A. the Mouse

TYR: I just er, saw my child sleeping. Waiting.

...

TYR: Consider this. It's either the end of it all, or you'll have a magnificent tale to tell your children.
BEKA: I've got plenty of stories, thanks. Speaking of kids, we should talk about that.

...

Tyr must have known she was there as soon as she crossed the threshold of Obs deck, not even turning from the window. "Here to talk?"

"Yeah." She crossed the room, leaned on the rail. They didn't look at each other. "You said you saw a child. With your wife or with Desiree?"

He hesitated before answering. "My wife," he said finally. "I barely saw him before the Genites arrived."

"I'm sorry." And she was. She could hear the catch in his voice, and it explained how upset he'd been after returning. "It must have been hard, being reminded of that."

"It was."

She should have left it there, shouldn't have poked at her own sore spot again, but of course she didn't. That would have been smart. "I wondered. You never mentioned your wife in the first place, so I guess it makes sense that you didn't tell us anything else about the Orca, especially after the Genites. I probably should have remembered that you don't believe in crossbreeding, so of course it wouldn't be with Desiree." She glanced over at him, resolutely studying the stars and not acknowledging her comment. "Or was telling me that crossbreeding was ridiculous something else you said to me once?"

There was another long pause. Right when she was thinking she should just leave and maybe spare them both, he answered. "I did say that once, yes." Another hesitation, and she wondered briefly if he was trying not to offend her anew, but then he did so without any apparent regret: "I don't have a child with Desiree only because she turned me away when I would have."

With that verbal gut punch, he turned away from the rail, leaving her angry at all three of them and feeling so very, very small.
