Two-faced
"You lied to me!" The righteous indignation in the girl's voice was nearly palpable as she glared at Jareth, who was lounging nonchalantly against my office wall with his arms crossed. "How could you?"
I resisted the urge to roll my eyes, and just shrugged. "I told you he would. He's a card-carrying Faerie Lord. What did you expect?"
She flung a baleful look my way. "Sarah! You said I could trust him."
I crossed my arms. "If you recall, I said you could trust him to be himself. That's fairly different."
Her shoulders slumped in sudden realization. "But you work with him all the time. Does he lie to you, too?"
I adjusted my glasses. "As I said, you can trust him to be himself." I glanced briefly at Jareth, who smirked like a fiend. "I don't believe a word he says, and it works out great."
She blinked. "Not a single word?"
I tilted my head, pretending to ponder. "Mmmm...yeah, I pretty much take what he says, invert it, and then that turns out to be something like the truth. He tells me quite a bit that way."
"Hush now," said Jareth, putting a finger to his lips. "You'll give away all my secrets, and then they'll take away my Faerie Lord card."
I nodded. "Wouldn't want that. It gets us into the coolest parties."
The girl stared at us for a long moment. "You both are simply awful." She turned abruptly on her heel and slammed the door as she left.
Jareth and I lasted almost thirty seconds before we burst out laughing.
"Awful," I wheezed, "simply awful."
Jareth nodded vigorously, still doubled over. "Such a pity."
