Yes, the purple haired trainer was Paul, someone we know competed in a Silver Conference, however as I said both trainers were known to have competed in a Silver Conference in the anime, and we know main universe Dawn didn't, and there is no proof alternate universe Dawn from Journeys did. In fact the blue haired trainer is Marina, the third New Bark Town trainer from the opening episodes of Pokemon Chronicles. The arc was titled The Legend of Thunder.
"Hello and welcome to the third day of this years Johto League Competition, the past two days have been jam packed with all sorts of exciting battles and it won't be stopping yet!" DJ Mary said excitedly. "The final 42 trainer will be split into 18 groups of three, in each of those groups you will be fighting two battles each, and the trainer with the best record at the end of each group will move on to the Semifinals!"
"I wonder who Ash will be facing off against?" Molly asked, trying to find him on the screen.
On the field
"Ash do you see either of us?" Ritchie asked.
"Yeah, I see us." Ash said, seeing him, Ritchie and Jimmy in a bracket together.
"Well then, best of luck, but if last time proves anything, I'll be moving on." Ritchie said jokingly.
"You won on a technicality at best." Ash said. "No way you'll win this time."
"So it looks like you two are my opponents for this round." Jimmy said walking up. "Best of luck to the both of you, but no way I'm loosing now!"
Later back at Ash's room
"So these are the information pages you have on Jimmy and Ritchie?" Casey asked, seeing the two trainers information.
"Yeah, this is everything the league allows me to see, Pokemon they've used in gym battles and the badges earned." Ash said. "It's helpful but not an answer key."
"What do you mean by that?" Casey asked.
"Isn't it obvious, if Ash can see theirs, they can see his." Molly pointed out.
"I know Ritchie uses a variety of Pokemon and it looks like Jimmy does as well so planning for a certain type will do me no good." Ash said.
"We know he started with that Typhlosion, so maybe bring Feraligatr to handle that." Casey said.
"Maybe, but it still leaves questions for my other two against him, and I'm running out of time." Ash said, knowing his match would be soon.
"Well, I hope you come up with a winning strategy." Casey said.
Later that afternoon
"Alright everyone, it's time for our next match between Ash of Pallet Town, and Jimmy of New Bark Town." The fields judge explained. "This will be a three on three match that will end when one side is no longer able to battle. We will now flip for which trainer will send out their Pokemon first."
A coin appeared on the screen, flipping showing both Ash and Jimmy's faces, before landing on Jimmy.
"Alright then Heracross come on out!" Jimmy called out.
"Heracross, who's that Pokemon?" Ash asked. "No matter, come on out Bulbasaur!"
"And the trainers have selected their first Pokemon, battle begin!" The judge declared.
"Bad choice going with a grass type, my Heracross is a bug type, you stand no chance! Heracross use Mega Horn!"
"Bulbasaur use Leech Seed!" Ash called out.
Bulbasaur launched a single seed, striking Heracross's horn as it split open, tangling the bug type in vines before he struck Bulbasaur.
"Alright now Bulbasaur come back!" Ash said, recalling the grass type. "Now that I know what I'm up against come out Houndoom!"
"That's great with Houndoom, Ash has an advantage!" Casey exclaimed.
"Except that Heracross are also fighting types, meaning Houndoom is still weak now against both of Heracross's types." Molly said in realization.
"Houndoom use Flamethrower!" Ash called out.
"Heracross use Horn Attack!"
Heracross flew forward as the bug type was quickly engulfed in flames, coming out the other side without having hit anything.
"Wait where'd Houndoom go?" Jimmy asked, as a pair of red glowing eyes showed from the dust created by Heracross's flight.
"Houndoom use Headbutt!"
"Heracross use Reversal!"
Houndoom leapt at Heracross, striking the bug type before he was thrown back with the same force.
"Houndoom use Flamethrower!" Ash called out.
"Heracross use Mega Horn!"
Houndoom tumbled into a landing, firing off a stream of flames, engulfing Heracross as they flew towards him.
"Heracross is unable to battle, the winner is Houndoom!" The judge declared.
"Heracross return!" Jimmy called out. "Come on out Donphan!"
"A ground type, Houndoom use Solar Beam!"
"Donphan use Defense Curl!"
Donphan rolled up as Houndoom took in sunlight from around him.
"Donphan use Rollout!"
Jimmy's Donphan rolled forward with great force and speed knocking Houndoom back before he was able to send out his attack.
"I really hope Ash registered Wobbuffet for this match." Casey said.
"Why do you say that?" Molly asked.
"When Ash last fought a Pokemon rolling around like that, he used Wobbuffet to counter the attack." Casey remembered, from Ash's fight against Whitney.
"Houndoom use Flamethrower!" Ash called out.
"Donphan keep up the rollout!" Jimmy said.
Donphan's armor protected them from Houndoom's flames as it struck the fire type again, sending Houndoom tumbling back.
"Donphan one more to make it count!" Jimmy called out as Houndoom was still recovering.
Donphan rocketed forward in a rolling moth ion, pinning Houndoom to the arena's wall, leaving an imprint of the two.
"Houndoom is unable to battle, the winner is Donphan." The judge declared.
"Good work Houndoom, take a well deserved rest." Ash said. "Now come out Kingler!"
"Kingler, now that's a good choice." Casey said excitedly.
"Donphan keep on the pressure with Rollout!"
Donphan rushed forward with more speed and ferocity than ever before.
"Kingler now! Use Crabhammer!" Ash called out, the water type slamming his pincer into the ground type, rocketing them backwards and ending the rollout.
"Now Kingler use Bubblebeam!"
"Donphan use Fury Attack!"
Donphan rushed forward, pushing through the stream of bubbles as it struck Kingler with his tusks.
"Kingler use Crabhammer!"
"Donphan use Earthquake!"
Kingler struck Donphan, sending it up and into the air, keeping it from using Earthquake.
"Donphan use Rollout!"
"Kingler use Ice Beam!" Ash called out.
Kingler pointed his left pincer, sending an ice cold beam at Donphan, freezing the ground type in a block of ice, causing it to come crashing to the ground.
"Donphan is unable to battle, the winner is Kingler." The judge declared.
"Donphan return. Come on out Typhlosion!" Jimmy called out.
"Ash has this in the bag, no way Kingler can loose now!" Casey cheered.
"Kingler use Bubblebeam!"
"Typhlosion use Flamethrower!"
Typhlosion sent out a stream of flames, evaporating Kingler's water attack, and singing the crustacean.
"Kingler use Hyper Beam!"
"Typhlosion use Dig!"
Kingler fired a massive beam of light at Typhlosion as the fire type dove underground.
"Kingler use Crabhammer! Straight down!" Ash called out.
Kingler slammed their pincer onto the ground, sending Typhlosion flying back out of the hole it came from.
"Now use Bubblebeam!"
"Typhlosion use Flame Wheel!"
Typhlosion curled into a ball of flames, shooting at Kingler, bursting each of it's bubbles before striking the water type.
"Kingler use Crabhammer!"
"Typhlosion use Thunder Punch!"
Typhlosion struck Kingler with speed and precision, knocking out the water type.
"Kingler is unable to battle, the winner is Typhlosion." The judge declared.
"Okay, not great but Bulbasaur is one of Ash's oldest Pokemon, surely that has to count for something right?" Casey asked.
"Even then, Typhlosion is fully evolved and has a massive type advantage. Bulbasaur would need a miracle to pull off this win, but the one piece of good news is that even if he loses, both knock outs will count towards his total points as long as he beats Ritchie." Molly said.
"Right, right, he just needs to keep it together." Casey said still concerned.
"Bulbasaur I choose you!" Ash called out.
"Too easy." Jimmy said with confidence. "Typhlosion use Flame Wheel!"
"Bulbasaur use Vine Whip to stop him!"
Bulbasaur wrapped his vines around a rock, stopping Typhlosion's forward movement by putting it between them.
"Typhlosion use Dig!"
"Bulbasaur quick use Leech Seed!"
As Typhlosion dove underground, Bulbasaur launched a seed that attached to a foot of the fire type.
"Bulbasaur get to higher ground!" Ash called out.
Bulbasaur quickly hopped on the very boulder he had previously used as a shield, watching and waiting for Typhlosion to pop up.
"Now Typhlosion!" Jimmy exclaimed.
Typhlosion leapt out of the ground a few feet behind Bulbasaur, diving right for the ground type.
"Bulbasaur behind you! Use Return!" Ash called out.
The grass type turned around, tackling into Typhlosion, sending it tumbling back.
"How is that possible, what even is that move?!" Casey asked in shock.
"A risky move that still isn't fully understood, but one thing is clear, the closer the bond between a trainer and the Pokemon using it, the better." Molly said.
"So for a duo like Ash and his Bulbasaur, it's probably stronger than anything Typhlosion has." Casey said.
"Push back all you want, you can't stop us! Typhlosion use Flame Wheel!"
"Bulbasaur use Razor Leaf!"
Bulbasaur sent out a series of leaves that burnt to a crisp on contact as Typhlosion ran right into him.
"Bulbasaur!" Ash called out.
"Bul. Ba!" Bulbasaur said getting back up, refusing to loose.
"Alright then, Bulbasaur use Return one more time!"
"Typhlosion use Flame Wheel!"
The two Pokemon collided with each other, bouncing the other backwards on impact for massive damage.
"Both Bulbasaur and Typhlosion are unable to battle, the match ends in a draw!" The judge declared.
"You were great Bulbasaur, standing up to a fully evolved fire type like that, I couldn't be more proud." Ash assured.
"So wait, what happens now?" Casey wondered aloud.
