Silence. That was all that filled the air around them, nothing but silence, as if the island, the world even, was shocked at the event that had befallen it. No birds dared move, no leaves rustled, no rain fell from the partially cloudy sky, even the very wind itself had fallen silent.
On the ground, Mothra and the smaller human companions stared horror-struck at the sight of the fallen titan, his adversary standing over him akin to a warrior triumphant over his opponent. It had been quick, but brutal; the beating guaranteeing defeat, the drop from the heavens almost certainly meaning death. Elsa looked on breathless, though she was internally screaming. Even a titan could not survive that, right?
But Godzilla's no ordinary titan! He's still alive! H-he has to be!
Her eyes desperately scanned the surface of his body, looking for any sign of life. The twitch of a finger, a slight rise and fall of the chest, a flicker of the eyes, the mouth to open and release a groan of pain. Anything!
Her efforts were rewarded when Godzilla's head turned slightly to the side, the fingers curling inwards towards the palm, a moan of pain filling the air. Elsa felt like jumping for joy.
He's alive!
That elation was quickly crushed when Cthulhu, who had been standing still and silent like an invisible phantom next to his foe, grabbed Godzilla by the throat and, seemingly effortlessly, dragged him over towards Mothra's mountain nest. His huge form dominated their peripheral vision, his footfalls shaking the ground, causing all of the humans (and reindeer) in the group to back away at his sheer immense size. Anna instinctively clutched Elsa's arm and pulled her back away from the approaching living mountain with Kristoff and Sven. The elder sibling protectively gripping her younger sister's arm, feeling the ground turn to ice beneath her feet. Even Mothra shrank away in fear from the being that was her master, which only served to heighten the absolute terror in the other Mu inhabitants.
When Cthulhu was about four or five paces from the group, he gently tossed Godzilla to the ground in front of them, flattening a huge score of trees and tossing another cloud of dust in the air that briefly obscured the fallen behemoth in front of them before dissipating. Elsa rushed forward, breath hitched in her throat, eyes brimming with tears, the calls of her sister and the others ringing in her ears.
As she approached, she saw Godzilla's head, which was laying on its front facing towards the group on a pile of trees on the edge of the clearing, move a little, a wounded groan filling the air. Elsa's heart pained with fear. Is he okay? How bad is he hurt? She looked up at Cthulhu standing nearby, having to crane her neck up to meet his own emotionless, almost robotic gaze.
"You hurt him!" she cried up at him. "How could you do this?!"
"It had to be done," his deep voice carried down from above. "He is a danger; he cannot be allowed to continue on in this world."
She stared up at him, totally flabbergasted at his matter-of-fact manner, his total lack of care. One might even describe it as nonchalant, as if he were jut reciting some useless, everyday thing. He had hurt another living thing, how could he do such a thing?!
Anger seized her; her hands clenched, her teeth gritted together, her brows narrowed into a dangerous, piercing gaze, that rush of fury flowing through her. Ice began to swirl at her fingertips, lace the ground at her feet. Even her breath became colder as if she were able to create the stuff with her breath. Her eyes flicked back to Godzilla's form, which was still lying by her side, breathing weakly, the eye facing her closed. It sent another jolt of anger right through her.
I'll kill him! She seethed to herself, taking a step towards him, the cries of the others behind her just faint whispers in her ears. Distant. Unintelligible. I won't let him get away with this!
"Elsa!" Cthulhu's voice rang out as he looked down at her disapprovingly. It snapped her out of her desire to act further, but she still held that firm gaze. "We do not have to expire him as normal."
She blinked. W-what!"We need not kill him as what happens to others." He continued as if reading her mind. "Freeze him,"That surprised her. "What?!"
Behind her, the other Arendellians and Mus (except for Belvera) exchanged confused glances.
The earth shook a little as Cthulhu knelt down on one knee, his golden eyes staring right into her as if seeing directly into her soul. The very weight of his gaze made the Arendelle queen withdraw a few paces as she tried to keep up the firm façade, but inside she was terrified, accentuated by the light snowfall falling around her. The huge god titan leaned in towards her, his face dominating her view, the tentacles around where his mouth would be writhing about like snakes.
"Freeze him, Elsa." He told her, his voice now calmer, less imposing and booming as before. "We do not have to kill him, but he must be stopped."
The blonde-haired queen blinked, unable to really believe what she was hearing from this beast. What? How could he say that when just minutes ago he was telling her that Godzilla was a danger that had to be removed completely, that he was a danger. He had even said the words directly: 'he had to be killed'. Why was he changing tact now?
Maybe … Maybe he's seeing some sense.
She looked at Godzilla, the huge form of her titan still on the ground, the eye facing her now flickering slightly as it struggled to fully open. An apt metaphor. Her mind flooded with questions and worries. Would freezing him even be possible? And if so, would it work? He was certainly strong enough to break through it; the wall she had created in front of Arendelle years ago had been more than enough proof of that! But then what if it did not work?
That made her worried beyond any shadow of a doubt. If Godzilla could not be frozen, then Cthulhu would no doubt continue beating him to a pulp until he had been killed. No, she-she could not let such a thing happen. What if I freeze Cthulhu?
She glanced up at said being, but the look he gave her instantly made the queen reject this idea. Even if she were to try it out, who was to say that it would actually work on him? And there was no doubt he would swipe her aside like a human swatting a fly the moment she would use her powers on him.
"Elsa!" Cthulhu's voice growled from above, now more demanding, terrifying.
She shook her head, her chest heaving as she glanced desperately from Cthulhu to Godzilla and even once at the others, searching for something, anything to help her out.
"I-I can't!"
"You must!"
Again she shook her head. "No! I can't! I won't!"
"Elsa, it is the only way to save him!"
That surprised her. Save him?! What the hell did he mean?!
The queen searched his eyes, wondering, searching for any kind of meaning behind them, behind his words with his actions. Then she looked over her shoulder at the others, hoping that they could somehow give some sort of reply. All of them gave her concerned looks, some silently telling her not to disagree with what the gigantic creature before them wanted her to do – these being Belvera and the Mu sisters. The Arendellians, on the other hand, gave her looks that would have had them vehemently protesting such a move. Don't do it. It doesn't sound like a good idea.
Elsa's gaze then turned to Mothra, hoping the gigantic titan would be able to help her out. Yet, there too she saw nothing but worry, fear even, in the eyes of the enormous insect as she shifted her gaze from the human queen back up to the enormous god that was her master, her antennae curled up in fear and wings flittering nervously. Not a good sign, but was that the intimidation, or something else?
The queen looked back at Cthulhu again, then at Godzilla, the down at her own hands. She had never wanted to use her powers against him. But this was not against him, it-it was helping him, right? Maybe she could freeze him, then free him later. Cthulhu would see sense! He had to. She could save him.
The queen walked over towards the gigantic creature, the 'Saviour of Arendelle', the one who had protected her and her family – in one form or another. As she approached, she saw his eye look down on her, focusing, wondering what was happening. Ragged breaths filled the air near him like a blowing horn, sending another jolt of panic through her. Again, she wondered if it would work. She had never tried to freeze an entire creature before, and that lingering, terrifying thought of what might happen if Godzilla was not completely frozen; what would Cthulhu do to him then?
Looking up, she gazed sorrowfully into his eye.
I'm sorry. I promise it will be temporary.
She thrust her arms out and cloud of white/crystal blue slammed into Godzilla, quickly spreading over his skin, covering it in a blue layer of ice and frost. Within moments, the entire side of his body was covered. Elsa wanted to stop, but she continued on, glancing nervously at Cthulhu, who had gotten back up and was watching her, making sure she did what he wanted. She turned her attention back to Godzilla, though she could feel the piercing gaze of the god-like titan boring into the back of her skull. More and more ice covered the body of Godzilla, who now looked as if he had been sleeping in snow, or been caught in a repeat of the Great Winter that Elsa had accidentally unleashed onto her kingdom. Thinking about it made her shudder, but she repressed those thoughts. This time was no accident, and nothing malicious too. It was to help him!
With one final look at his eye, she saw it staring down at her with a lost complexion, a feeling of 'why'. Why was she doing this? Why was she freezing him into a prison? Why? Why?!
The ice covered his face, lacing across it like a plague, consuming him and entombing him within the blue prison. Elsa exhaled and fell on her knees, exhausted mentally and physically. Anna rushed over and knelt down next to her, but the queen did not register her presence as she stared up at the now frozen form of the titan she held so dear. Her heart rang with guilt; she wanted to scream, shout, curse loudly. Anything to unleash her frustration at what she had been practically forced to do. Another bout of anger surged through her. She felt that familiar, yet eerily alien crackling feeling around her fingertips.
She glared up at Cthulhu and stood up, clasping Anna's hand in hers, holding it tightly as she made sure to move her younger sister behind her.
"Alright, I've done it!" she called up to him angrily.
Cthulhu nodded, glancing at Godzilla's frozen form, then back at her.
"You did the right thing, Elsa."
Suddenly, his fist came down and slammed into the ground not far in front of the two Arendelle sisters, the force sending both girls flying back towards the others, who were themselves taken by surprise that by the time they had any reaction, Anna and Elsa were on the ground in front of them. Elsa was dazed and tried to sit up but fell over again, though thankfully Moll and Lora caught her to stop her from hitting her head. Kristoff and Belvera rushed to Anna; the former leaning her against his body whilst the latter checked her head for any injuries.
Heavy footfalls made the group (even Elsa, though she was dazed) look up to see Cthulhu put one closed fist in his other hand and raise them both into the air.
"N-no!" Elsa cried out weakly.
She could only look on in horror as Cthulhu brought his closed fist down on Godzilla.
A thunderous crack/crash sound filled the air and the centre of Godzilla's body caved in. Cthulhu followed up with a stomp that shattered more of the centre of his body, the remains crumbling into a shower of ice and frozen flesh.
With a weak cry, Elsa fainted into the arms of Moll and Lora, both of who, along with the other Arendellians, looked on in shock. Belvera sighed heavily, part of her relieved that it was all over, yet the looks on the faces of those around her made it feel less victorious than she had hoped.
"Mothra," Cthulhu spoke, his normal aura resonating through the air like the voice of a god. "Dispose of what's left."
Said moth glanced up at the gigantic being before her, then at the shattered form of Godzilla; still, unmoving, lifeless. Though she was a titan and had fought many times before, the sight of the one that had been the unquestioned alpha of the world … it was … frightening, to say the least.
A spine-chilling growl snapped the moth out of her thoughts. "Mothra!" She flinched and shrank back a little, uttering a fearful whimper as Cthulhu glared down at her, his golden eyes glowing that fierce gleam like the bowels of hell itself. "Do as I say!"
She did not dare question or hesitate. Mothra ambled over to Godzilla and began to lay silk across his form. Cthulhu watched for a moment, then picked up a piece of the frozen blue remains, and began to walk away; his wings folding away into his back.
The humans – and reindeer – on the ground looked on helplessly at the retreating mountainous form, then at Elsa, who was still passed out in Moll and Lora's arms. They still tried to process what had just happened, how such a thing could have really happened! If anyone had told them that Godzilla would have … would have … they did not wish to say it, but had someone told them something like this would have happened years ago it would have been dismissed.
And yet, here it was right before them.
They did not know what the future would hold, but things were not going to be good.
