Chapter 5— Hans spends the night at Eden Hall
10:45 Adam's POV
Gunnar, Hans, and I just got back to the dorms about 10 minutes ago. Gunnar was setting up Hans playpen up while I was on the floor trying to get him changed and he was fighting two battles, one the battle with sleep and the other battle was getting his pajamas on. Charlie, Fulton, Jesse, Mr. Roberts, our Dorm supervisor, and Portman saw us roll Han's stroller up into the dorm's.
{Flashback 10 minutes earlier}
"What's this Sesame Street Parade?" Portman asked.
"No," I said.
"Hey Hans, are you coming to spend the night with us?" Charlie said.
"Harlie, Harlie," Hans said.
"Harlie?" Jesse asked.
"Cut him some slack he can't say Charlie yet," Charlie said.
"Adam, Gunnar what is going on?" Mr. Roberts asked.
"Vou should vell him," Gunnar said.
"Why me?" I asked.
"Vecause vhey're vour parents," Gunnar said kind of loud.
"Gunnar quiet down," Mr. Roberts said sternly.
"Sorry," Gunnar mumbled.
I took a deep breath, "All right, mom went into Labor tonight….."
"Tonight, isn't she early?" Charlie asked.
"VES," Gunnar screamed.
"Gunnar that is two," Mr. Roberts said again sternly.
"Sorry," Gunnar mumbled.
"Yes, she went into labor. Yes she is early. Anyway, Grandma Lebrie isn't equipped to have a baby in the house. And Grandma Bombay is in the Bahamas on her annual Girls trip/pre-Christmas cruise. It's only for tonight, until Dad or Grandma MacKay can get down here to pick him up," I said.
"Wait, wait, wait. Your Grandma Patricia is coming down here tonight? What about your Grandpa Thomas?" Charlie asked.
I shrugged my shoulders.
"Wait who is Patricia and Thomas?" Jesse asked.
"Patricia and Thomas is Ms. Michele's parents, vou moron," Gunnar said.
"That's the plan and Gunnar you need to take it easy," I said.
"Well, I suppose, we don't have a choice do we?" Mr. Roberts said.
"Nope," I said.
Mr. Roberts looked at the Grandfather clock that now read 10:40pm before he said "All right, get him upstairs and settled for bed. Lights out in 20 minutes boys."
"I think we are done, there is more than 20 minutes left of Psycho," Portman said.
"Come on Gunnar let's get him upstairs," I said as I wheeled Hans to the stairs.
"I will help you, Adam," Charlie said as he got in front of Hans stroller to help me carry it up the three flights of stairs. Why the elevator stopped working was beyond me.
"Do you need help Gunnar?" Guy asked.
"Ves, I don't think that I should carry Han's playpen up the stairs," Gunnar said.
"That's a playpen, looks a little flat to be a playpen," Portman said.
"It's a pack and play portable Playpen. For tonight, Hans sleeping area," I said.
"What happens if Coach or Mr. and Mrs. MacKay doesn't make it back here in time tomorrow?" Jesse asked.
"Well, he will have to go to Daycare before school and then I don't know what we will do about hockey practice tomorrow," I said.
"Vell I guess I vill have to vatch him, vhich vill make Coach Orion veal happy," Gunnar said.
"I guess either that or Ollie, but I don't know if Ollie is on the list to pick up Hans. In fact, I am not sure if I am on the list to pick up Hans," I said.
{End of Flashback}
I finally got him wrestled into his pajamas and laid him down in his bed, Just as Gunnar was changing into something more comfortable for him to sleep in. I was going to grab my pj's and head down to the bathroom to change and brush my teeth. When I returned Gunnar and Hans were laying down. Well, that was easy, I thought and then I locked the door and turned the light off and crawled into bed with Gunnar. Dad and I moved the beds back together the day that Gunnar and I moved back into the dorms the Sunday after thanksgiving. I said, "Goodnight Hans. I love you Gunnar."
"I love vou," Gunnar said and then we kissed.
Then Hans started to cry.
"Han's go to sleep. Goodnight," I said.
One hour later-Gunnar's POV
Hans had been crying for an hour. We got a knock on the door about 15 minutes ago, Adam got up and answered the door.
"Jesus we can hear him clear down in our room," Fulton said.
"I don't know what is wrong with him, he just won't settle down and go to sleep," Adam said.
"Here I will handle it," Portman said and then he barged through the door.
"Portman what are you doing?" Adam yelled.
"YO KID GIVE IT A BREAK ALREADY!" Portman yelled.
Hans stopped crying for a second and then picked up the wailing even louder.
"Vhat's great, good job Portman," I said as I climbed out of bed.
"What it always worked for me," Portman said.
"Alright the only people that should be in here are Gunnar, Hans and I. Get out," Adam said.
"Fine just get the kid to shut up!" Portman said as he exited the room. Adam closed the door and locked it again.
"Come here Hans," I said. Hans came into my hands, and I lifted him into my arms.
"Gunnar be careful," Adam said.
"I got it," I said.
"I don't want you to hurt yourself," Adam said.
"I said I got it, vhat do ve do?" I asked.
"We could try singing I guess; mom always did to get him to sleep. He loves Rock a bye baby," Adam said.
"I don't know it," I said.
"You rock him, I will sing," Adam said.
I started to rock Hans back and forth and then Adam started to sing,
"Rock a bye baby, in the treetop
When the wind blows the cradle will rock
When the bough breaks the cradle will fall
And down will come Hans cradle and all."
Hans started to settle at a point during the song, but the second the song was over he would start crying again.
We sang for about 30 minutes. Before I said, "I am getting vired of vhis, vhy vouldn't he settle down?"
"I don't know, poor kid. I wish we could go off campus, maybe a drive would help," Adam said.
"His binky, vhere's his binky?" I asked.
"I don't know he had it in him, when he was coming to, oh no," Adam said.
"Vhat?" I asked.
"It's got to be in the car," Adam said.
"Oh, great vhat do ve do," I asked.
"Call Bella, she can sneak out and grab it for us," Adam said as he picked up the phone to dial Bella's room.
Bella's POV
"Bella Banks is rushing down the line. She could win it for the United States, she shoots. She SCORES! Bella Banks has put the United States up 5 to 3. Boy, she can really fly," Bob Costas said.
"Yes, Bob. The United States is going to take the gold. If Julie "the Cat" Gaffney. Can keep the Canadians out of the US net for the next 2 minutes and 45 seconds," Hannah Storm said.
"3...2...1 The UNITED STATES WINS!" Bob Costas said.
Down on the ice I and my teammates were mauling Julie, we were so happy.
"Bella, Baby you are watching that again?" Charlie asked as he walked into our living room, our living room in Wisconsin. It was about 6 months after the Olympics, we were preparing for another year in Wisconsin. Well Charlie was preparing for another year at Wisconsin, including trying to get on the first line of the Badger's that year. I was preparing to have a baby.
"I can't help it, I wish that Grandma was alive to watch us win," I said as I looked down at my barely there, 4-month-old pregnant belly. Grandma had passed away 2 months before the Olympics. I just made it to the funeral from Boston.
"I know, and we will miss her terribly. But you knew it was her time," Charlie said as he lifted my chin up.
"I know, can we call the baby Josephine after my grandmother? I want to honor her," I said.
"Whatever you want, Angel. Listen I know I promised Coach and your Grandmother and your brothers that I was going to wait until after we were done with school. But well, I know that with you being pregnant, that sort of speeds up the timing of this," Charlie said.
"Charlie what are you doing?" I asked.
Charlie fished a box out of his pocket, got down on a knee, opened the box and said, "Isabella Lillian Banks, I love you. Will you be my wife?"
[Ring, Ring]
"Wake up Bella," Charlie said in a soft feminine voice.
I opened my eyes and looked up at Julie as she said to me, "Wake up Bella. It's Adam he needs you."
"You better be dying," I said I heard Hans crying in the background.
"And hello to you too. No but we need your help, or we will be dead," Adam said.
"What?" I asked.
"We need Han's pacifier, it's the only way we are going to get him to sleep," Adam said.
"Why can't you do it?" I asked.
"Because we are not going to get past Mr. Roberts because he will know what is going on," Adam said.
Mr. Roberts was about 35 years old, so he would be able to hear perfectly. Unlike Ms. Swartz when her hearing aids were out. Ms. Swartz was about 65 years old, but she had perfect hearing when they were in, but when they were out, she could not hear much.
I sighed before I said, "So let me get this straight you want me to drag my warm ass out of bed, walk clear across campus to get the keys to Michele's van and go to that van to retrieve a binky and bring it to you to give to a child that is no way, shape or form related to either of us. Are you out of your mind?"
"Yes, because we all need sleep," Adam said.
"No," I said.
"Please Bella, pretty please. You girls can sneak out better then we could," Adam begged.
"No," I said.
"Vell her I'm despite," Gunnar said.
"Gunnar says that he is despite and to be honest, so am I," Adam said.
"Fine," I said and then I hung up.
Adam's POV
I waited down in the entrance for Bella to show up, when she and Julie did I was happy that we would soon have some relief. Within about 10 minutes they were back with Han's pacifier.
"Thanks Bella," I said as I opened the door to receive the pacifier and keys back.
"Yeah, yeah, yeah you owe me for this," Bella said, and she quickly turned around and headed back to her dorm.
"What's her problem?" I asked Julie.
"I have no clue," Julie said.
When I returned I heard Gunnar singing a song in Icelandic,
"Sofðu þig núna, barn mitt
Sofðu þig í jötu þínum
Sofðu meðan vetrarvindar munu væla
Sofðu öruggur fyrir hættu
Sofðu þig þegar myrkur ísinn stynur
Frost og eldur nálgast
Sofðu þig þegar þögnin grætur
Sofðu þig án ótta
Sofðu þig vel og sefur þig lengi
Því að lífið mun láta þig þreytast
Sofðu þig kyrr og sefur þig sterkan
„Til að þú heyrir ekki lengur í mér
Þú heyrir ekki lengur í mér
(Sleep you now, oh child of mine
Sleep you in your manger
Sleep while winter winds will whine
Sleep you safe from danger
Sleep you when the dark ice groans
Frost and fire nearing
Sleep you when the silence moans
Sleep you with no fearing
Sleep you well and sleep you long
For life will leave you weary
Sleep you still and sleep you strong
'Til you no longer hear me
You no longer hear me)"
"That's really pretty," I said.
"Shush he's almost asleep, do you have it?" Gunnar asked.
"Yeah, I have it," I said as I stuck the pacifier in his mouth. Hans immediately started to suck on it and then closed his eyes.
"Thank God he's asleep, finally," Gunnar said.
"He is going to be one tired boy in the morning," I said.
"He is not going to be the only one," Gunnar said as he put Hans down in the pack and play, he then covered him with a blanket and went to bed.
I went to the door and relocked it again, went to turn off the light and found myself staring at my little brother.
"Vou okay?" Gunnar asked.
"Yeah, I was thinking about Hans. Do you think that we will be able to handle kids?" I asked.
"I vont know come to bed," Gunnar said.
"Your right," I turned off the light and went to bed. Within literal seconds I was out.
So, What do you think? Please take 5 minutes and leave a review! Thanks in advance!
