Prompt:

"You were never just a hero, Sonic… people gave you that name after they saw what you did! But you've always just naturally followed your heart with an unyielding stride! You've fought for those who can't, and worse, wouldn't do it themselves! Don't feel like you have to keep up an image or face for us! We'd understand… Sonic… You don't have to suffer alone…"

It was the last bit that got him.

He was pretty touched by most of what she said… she was right. She usually,.. nah, always was.

He looked at the ground, realizing he was probably staring a bit too long…

Uncomfortably long…

He smiled then, before turning to his side, letting his arms hang beside him.

He looked away a moment, his eyes gently opening slightly…

"Thank you… Amy." he did mean it, but… "I appreciate it. But I need to think… some things out."

He scratched his head, turning more casual as he looked back at her, turning a bit more serious than usual. "Alone."

He nodded to her, before walking away.

That seemed to crush her though, and something inside him told him not to dismiss her quite like that…

For the first time in Sonic's life, he sighed and stopped.

What else had he to lose?

Right before she turned around, surrendering to give him some space, he spoke over his shoulder, eyes up as if giving in himself.

"You could tag along,.. if you want."

Her head shot up, feet stopping from stepping further, as she shot around with a huge, open grin on her face.

Before she got too excited, Sonic angled himself around and pointed a finger up, wagging it slightly as he warned her discreetly. "But on one condition." He shook his head with a tilt. "No talking. Understand?"

Happily, she nodded, thinking the action charming.

He smiled slightly, and nodded, before looking away, shifting almost robotically to step a paused foot out.

"…Okay."

He marched forward, hearing her footsteps keep up joyfully behind.

She just wanted to be with him… help him out… it wasn't wrong of her to do so. Why should he keep her away from where she wanted to be?

After a long walk, the two stopped to look over a cliff with some high-rising wind, below, a beautiful ocean with crashing waves.

He thought and folded his arms, the silence was nice, company wasn't… so bad.

He turned to glance at her after taking in some sea air, and noticed nonchalantly that she was looking down, her mouth fidgeting.

She realllly wanted to say something…

Praising her secretly in his heart for her long patience, he smirked to himself and looked forward.

"Alright. You can talk now."

"Haaa~ Finally!" Amy stretched, before bending down and then moving her quills back with both hands, sucking in some fresh air before gesturing out to the ocean. "Isn't it beautiful?"

She was always so animated. A little ball of never-ending energy. Just wanting to be noticed and appreciated. Wanted and loved. Necessities… Tails had once told him, to a happy life.

For a second… Sonic wondered if she was happy. Stupid question.

… But then he wondered…

Was he?

He 'heh'd and looked down, closing his eyes and agreeing with her. "Yeah, it is."

She swayed her arms side to side, smiling up at him before looking towards it again.

There was another moment of silence, before she spoke up again.

"Sonic…" she looked away, but before she could continue, he started to turn around and walk away, startling her to looking up and turning around to see what he was doing,… or where he was going.

"Let's go." he stated bluntly. "Everyone's waiting."

She smiled, thinking this meant he was okay, before she also wondered…

Was he?

She quickly bounced forward, her usual awkward run Sonic would secretly laugh at, before calling his name in her familiar tone once again, "Sonic..!"

She slowed down as she reached a hand out, before looking strangely unsure, and pulling away, her head ducking down and to the side.

Sonic noticed the strange shift in the way she called his name, and tilted his head to the sound, recognizing the disturbance, and turning to see her a little off her usual quirks.

He waited for her to respond, "..hm?" he blinked a moment, slightly responding but not really loud enough for anyone to hear.

"…I… I'm really glad you let me tag along, today!" she smiled warmly up to him, matching the rays of the sun, or at least, the feeling of such things.

He nodded, "No problem." he gave her a thumbs up, before breaking the formation of his hand apart and just shaking it around a moment, "Well.. I was glad for the company." he started to walk off again, but seemed to wave the touching moment off.

Until…

"I was surprised!" Amy moved forward, as if not done.

His head turned back once more, snapping a little at the strange continuation of the conversation, and turned back; a neutral,… but,… curious frown on his face.

She paused again… as if thinking her words through.

He settled now, putting his feet firmly down, and bent his head down a bit to try and see what her face looked like. "Amy..?" she wasn't usually so.. so closed off like this.

Or shy.

He thought that kinda weird, weirder than most days.

"…You know… you never usually let people get this… close to you. So I'm really glad we got to spend time together. Even if it was just a little while… it was.. wonderful.. being by your side!" nodded, cheerfully, seeming really touched by the notion.

Now Sonic was curious…

He folded his arms, tapping his foot slightly as he thought, before walking back towards Amy.

She was startled as he didn't seem to stop walking… moving closer and closer…

She stepped back a moment, leaning away as he put his hands on his hips, smiling and just leaning forward to turn himself back and forth, looking over her expression.

"S..Sonic?"

"How close do you want to be?"

She blinked a moment.

He leaned away, before putting a hand to his chin, straightening up. "Maybe that's not how I should put it… let's see…" he tapped his finger on his face, before looking up, closing one eye, before looking back at her, and flicking out a pointer finger to gesture to her, leaning once again and sticking his toe on his front foot up a bit with the motion, a very animated look for a usually peppy hero.

"What I mean is… where do you think my limits are? Do you think I naturally shun people away?"

"N-no! That's not it all..! Well, I mean… you do kinda hold up a bit of a… a wall?" Amy nervously tried to explain in a 'non-insulting or threatening' way, but gestured like a mime with her hands back and forth to show a kind of 'barrier' there that Sonic kept around his heart, or at least, personal feelings.

"Maybe I'm not communicating this right, either…"

He tilted his head, raising an eyebrow playfully before straightening up.

"Well… Does everyone think that?" he put his hands behind his back. "I'm surprised though… usually you're so… excitable with moments like these." he suddenly shifted directions, taking it off him and waving his hands out, turning the conversation to her.

"..M-me?" Amy looked up, curiously, not sure what he meant.

"Well…" he rolled his eyes up, and then gestured around him.

"We're all alone… just the two of us…. talking.." he shrugged a bit by keeping his hands out like his motioned gesture before, and then lifted a shoulder up and tilted his head in towards it.

"This kinda stuff makes you crazy, doesn't it?"

"A-ah!" Amy looked around, suddenly self-conscious as she bundled her hands together and shifted around as she noticed what he meant. "Y-you're right! I haven't noticed!"

His expression suddenly completely dropped.

It was like pure shock.

Wasn't she here to be around her hero?

"I was so concerned about helping you.. I hadn't really thought of it like that!" She put her hand, embarrassingly, behind her head.

Sonic slowly lowered his arms.

"B-but, you're right! I-it is kinda like a date… now that you mention it…" she reverted back to her younger years a moment, hiding half her face with her fisted hands, before turning herself left and right in excitement.

Sonic looked away as she commented further, but he didn't pay attention to what she said.

He let out a stiff chuckle, rubbing his head in amazement.

She wasn't there for herself…

She was trying to be there for him…

He smiled and ran off.

Amy watched him leaving, and suddenly dropped her hands fast to her sides, "Sonic! Ah..! W-wait up!" She took off after him.

There was a strange joy in realizing what her words meant… and Sonic continued to smile as he kept his head down during the run.

She really cared that much.. huh?

About what he was feeling…

"Sonic!"

He tilted his head towards the sound, closing his eyes, enjoying the sound and absorbing every last syllable of it.

"Soniiic!"

It was comforting… this time, when he heard her calling his name.

Her voice…

Her persistence…

She truly just wanted to be there for him. Just him.

He slowled down a moment, tapping his foot as he waited for her to get closer.

He pouted at how long he had to wait, folding his arms, then leaning forward her way with his hands on his hips.

His ears perked up when he heard bushes rustling, and her once again calling his glorious name, escaping once again from her mouth.

"Sooooniiiic!"

Each fluctuation of her voice meant something different, he could only recognize over the years if she was upset, angry, or just wanting attention.

But this time.. it was different.

He zipped ahead again, before jumping from one foot to another, not moving, but clearly playing with her as he waited.

"Come on… come on… There ya-go!" he zipped ahead as he looked over his shoulder and saw her emerge from the forest.

Allowing her to chase him home, he bent his head down, a whole new expression of joy came over him… he knew she was attempting to understand him.

It was something he never thought he cared for, really.

You can't really know someone.

But he felt, in that moment…

Maybe she could.

His smile turned to the warmth of sunshine, as if she had truly taught him… how to smile like that.

As he raced forward, a strange sensation of energy came from his heart, when once again… he heard her call out his name from behind… at a distance.

"Soooniiicc!"

(I missed writing Canon uTDuT It's a little less because of I'm describing through Sonic's pov. It's not common to see his emotions expressed so truthfully and purely, you know, very raw emotion. He hides it well, but I tried to make Amy not notice… truly canon would have Sonic's emotions and feelings a mystery, only words and some simple gestures would reveal anything. But… isn't this better? :) )
