Could you do a sort of Sonic Boom headcanon where Sonic gets very injured during a battle against Lyric and Tails has to take a stand and become leader for the gang for a little while, even though he feels a bit insecure and unsure of what exactly to do, since he's always been the second wheel and simple mechanic. But as he continues to give orders and direct attacks, he grows in his confidence, and...you do the rest! (Tails is kinda one of my fav characters...he's just soo CUTE!)

The battle against Lyric is under way as Sonic is suddenly shot down and buried under rock, sacrificing himself for his new found friends/team, as they don't know what to do now.
"We…We need a plan!" Amy tries to get it together, trying to be the leader but is slowly falling to her knees. She crouches on the ground and begins to cry, "He…He can't die! He can't!" she covers her eyes and shakes her head, unable to focus as Tails looks down to her, panicking because he always relied on Sonic, but now it was his turn…
"K-knuckles!" he hesitantly looked up to Knuckles, who was a bit shaken as well, but seemed to keep it to himself.
"Y-yeah, buddy?" he looked on the ground, before shaking his head and looking at Tails. "What do you need?"
"I need you to dig Sonic up! Me and Amy will cover you, Amy! You have to help me distract the robots fire to help Knuckles save Sonic! Amy! Please! For Sonic!" He knelt down and tugged at Amy's arm, as she wiped her tears and looked to him, nodding.
"Whatever it takes." she stated, getting up.
"Knuckles, go! Now!" Tails and Amy launched themselves forward and started to battle, as Lyric laughed and flew off, having rockets on the back of his metal suit that propelled him away.
"With Sonic gone, they'll be a mess, and there's no way anyone can stop my plans of a perfect empire!"
"Not on my watch!" Tails flung a tracker on the back of his suit, one he couldn't reach, but one he didn't hear land on him as well. Tails smiled, slightly proud of himself before robots started to fire, and he freaked out and ducked, flailing his arms and dodging another set of laser fire as he quickly lost his confidence.
"Tails! I need you!" Amy was hitting away robots, but they were ganging up on her, and worry filled her eyes.
"You.. You do?" Tails remembered Sonic saying, 'I can't believe I'm saying this, but I need you, kid!'
Tails was flying above them, but the camera gave a close up on his fists, that slowly twitched to close into a tight ball before he grabbed his inventions and started to release bombs from above, "AHH!" he shouted out a powerful battle cry, as the robots looked up to the sky, distracting them from Knuckles and giving Amy time to hit them off the cliff to the side of her.
"Great work, Tails!" She shouted up.
"Knew you could do it, buddy!" Knuckles nodded up to him, having Sonic over his shoulder.
Tails swooped down and landed with a cool demeanor about him, walking boldly up with a man's stride in his step. "Let's get Sonic to Doc, she'll know what to do!"
"Yes sir!" Amy saluted, winking to him as a sign of praise, as Knuckles nodded.
Tails grinned an open smile, seeing how his friends were there to support him taking the leadership role, and swished his tails in excitement. "Thanks, guys. For accepting me." he stated, showing a kinder side to his eyes, before narrowing them again, and nodded, looking determined to succeed and save Sonic!
