Prompt:
Amy was shot out from the side and scaled a large part of the battlefield. The custom character looked up, shocked to see the moment, and ran to try and catch her, dodging debris and robots but one charged through a building's wall.
The custom character put up their hands, using a gadget to get out of the way before looking back at Amy, worried.
Suddenly, a blue stream of light flashed before them, and Sonic leapt up to break the stream of light, having it pixel away as he grabbed her- tumbling to the ground with a skid on the walls as a decent descent.
He sprung off and landed to put her down, holding a hand to her shoulder and seeming to bend slightly as if asking and examining her to make sure she was okay.
She nodded, giving a closed-eyed smile to reassure him she was fine, as he nodded and gave her a thumbs up; removing his arm, he took off passed the custom character.
"Come on! Gawking won't win us the war!" Sonic encouraged, as the custom character looked frazzled, nodding with a frown of embarrassment, blushing slightly at the scene and rushing off to follow him.
-Later~-
Tails mentioned the looming destruction awaiting them a few towns down, and then mentioned that half the city was already destroyed, as Amy fell behind, before finally falling to her knees.
"What are we fighting for!?"
The team suddenly turned around, as Custom character seemed startled, turning as well.
She shook her head, holding her arms out in front of her to support her above the ground. "There's… there's nothing left.. it's all… gone…" She squinted her eyes shut, having them sting from the dust that rose into them from being so close to the ground where the wind was giving a steady blow of eerie desolation.
Sonic frowned, slowly starting to make his way to her.
"I just… I can't do it anymore!" she covered her face, crying suddenly.
Custom Character looked concerned, reaching a hand forward and bending their eyes back, wanting to comfort in some way.
But then,
Sonic turned to speak over his shoulder.
"Tails, go on without us."
Tails was about to protest, but nodded and pulled Custom Character along, shaking his head at the desire the character showed to stay and help.
As the team departed, Sonic walked further over to Amy, bending down to her level on one knee. He tilted his head to her, a look of care in his eyes as his kind and gentle nature began to show through his usual leader-like persona of wise-cracks and confident chuckles.
"I just can't… I can't see anything left worth fighting for." in shame, she bent down, trying to keep her face concealed as she cried.
His smile shifted to one of understanding, as he drooped his eyelids a little down, before looking to the ground, thinking…
He looked up, much more confident in an answer now.
"I do."
She slowly… with soft sniffles,… curled her fingers to look over her hands…
He was staring right at her, a loving look of praise, before reaching his arms out to her shoulders, then dropping them down a bit with a friendly grin of encouragement, and helped her get up.
"There's always something to fight for, Amy. A future… this place…" he gestured around him, removing his arms from her to show the ruins around him. "Everything can be rebuilt. Everything can be salvaged and made into more than what it used to be."
Amy looked around, suddenly picturing a wonderful, bustling city. People and shops lining ever cracked corner and bended postboard.
It brought a smile to her face, picturing families at home, friends in the park, and no Eggman overlord to worry them into a state of dread and unhappiness…
He turned back to her, "That's what I fight for. Can you see it?"
She gracefully nodded her head in acceptance, "Yes." she agreed, and turned to him. "I see that future." her eyes glistened with new hope.
He smiled, seeing the sudden shift in her and nodded, taking her hand and starting to lead her back to the others.
He carefully watched her eyes, making sure there wasn't a second of doubt that he needed to address, before cautiously continuing on and moving at her pace.
He was growing confident in his success, before Amy walked and spoke up again.
"In that future… I see much more than things rebuilt or salvaged."
"Huh?" he felt a pull on his arm, and stopped to look back at her, blinking in innocence at not knowing what she was implying.
"I saw you too." she tilted her head, and with a slight flirtation, looked away at the city. "And me."
He turned his eyes away, a look of confusion as he straightened himself out. "Uhhh.." he tapped a foot down, being careful about how he replied.
As she swayed her body a bit, he noticed her daydreaming, and frowned with suspicion on that gesture.
"Well…" he looked down, trying to avoid as best he could with revealing he knew what she meant now. "You and I might see two different futures. But they're both still worth fighting for." He gave her a quick glance before trying to move on, continuing passed the awkward moment she almost created before he felt another tug and looked as though he had flinched from the tug.
His face drooped to an awkward look of 'please, don't.' as Amy continued, her eyes more obvious in her flirtation as she blinked them a few times and kept her hand locked in his.
"I think it's the same future… but we're looking at it in different directions and times." she mused, before she saw him lighten his grip on his hand, acting as though he was trapped by her own hold and just seemed to avoid confrontation.
Surprisingly, he kept his mouth shut, not combating her after a wild mood-swing, in his opinion, before she let his hand go and pouted.
"Oh, you said look to the future! Why can't I look a little farther ahead?"
"I guess I try and see the current possibilities… instead of the endless ones."
He grumbled slightly out, as if not really wanting to be heard.
As if on cue, not realizing he wanted to end the conversation on that last note, and being a woman- she naturally wanted the last word- replied with utter confidence radiating from her renewed sense of life and optimism.
"More possibilities, more things worth protecting, right?"
He gave her a pity smile, curling a side of his mouth as if awkwardly trying to just satisfy her with that response.
She bought into it, bouncing back to lead the onward march towards the rest of the team, as he returned to his frown, as if wishing that went better.
'What possibilities could that be… Amy?' He almost wished he could ask, without knowing what she'd respond with.
'The ones where we're all happy… and love can't be missed… nor destroyed… nor forgotten.'
Yeah… he knew that's what she'd say.
And he smiled.
(Tried to keep it mostly in character and canon XD what do you think? Cute, right? xp)
