Prompt:
"Well, this is different!" Amy happily jumped up to the tree branch, a low-riding appendage to a large oak tree. The night sky glimmered with bright stars, far from the skyscrapers in the distance that lined a jagged frame for the sky to sit upon.
"It can't be all that different." Sonic mused, jumping up quickly to lay across the branch a little farther from her, eating his Chilidog. "Em-em." He chewed, "It's not like I haven't bought a chilidog for you before."
"Yeah, but…" Amy dangled her feet off the side, smiling with her thoughts elsewhere as she examined the warm chilidog in her hands. "Last time we agreed to get a chilidog together, you got your nose stuck in a book…"
Sonic's eyes blinked a moment, recognizing that she still didn't understand his whimsical adventure and becoming King Author, but he just let it go with a sigh. "Sorry about that…"
She shook her head, giggling to herself at his cute apology. "Em-hmm. It's okay! I just never took you for a book worm!" her eyes glanced over to him with sheer love, which always made him slightly uneasy, but his awkward nerves just made him even more the charmer.
"You gotta cut that out, Amy…" He smiled back to her, sweating a little at her over-doting nature. "I honestly asked you to come here to tell you something."
"Oh, I know." Amy bit lightly into her chilidog, not speaking again until she finished swallowing and wiping her mouth.
"You do?" Sonic squirmed a second, "How?"
"Tails messaged me this." She held up her personal Miles-Electric, as the message written there was a text stating: Amy, Sonic has something to tell you. Don't flip out, okay?
She then placed the chilidog by her cheek, as though attempting to 'cup' her face as she swooned, "Oh, Sonic~ I've been waiting for this night, forever!"
"Yeah… I can see how that might be taken when out of context…" Sonic sweat-dropped, realizing she probably didn't expect what he was really going to say. "Look, Amy… It's really not what you're thinking…" He tried to let her down gently but she went on.
"Ah! I have to find a dress!" She exclaimed, "And soon too. I'm not a fan of a 'lengthy engagement'."
"A-Amy…" Sonic stood up, not sure how to go about this now. "G.U.N is asking me to leave with Shadow and investigate a strange comet. It apparently has a power signature much like the Master Emerald, but possibly deadlier."
Amy's starstruck eyes suddenly dulled, "W…What?"
"…Amy, I'm leaving." He held the chilidog down and looked over to her. "Space has… kinda a different paradigm than earth does. I think the time fame might mean… I won't be back for a while…"
The disheartening news swept through Amy like a shattering glass that's pieces spiraled away and cut into every part of her.
"…I came to tell you-"
"No." Amy leaned forward, gripping her chilidog as she felt herself trembling. "You can't say it. You can't!"
"…I never say goodbye, so that's not what I was going to-" he noticed how much this was hurting her and bit his lip, looking away. "I wanted you to know."
"When..? How long?" her voice sounded lost, almost desperate.
"…Soon." He stated, jumping off the tree branch, looking out towards the skyscrapers. "Long." He then looked at his chilidog, not really in the mood to eat anymore… but downed it quickly anyway.
He wiped his mouth on his arm and then turned back to give Amy a confident smile. "But I'll be back. I always do come home. Besides, how could I ever leave earth forever? That doesn't sound like me, now, does it?"
His tone was reassuring, but Amy just looked at her chilidog.
"…You… You'll need your strength!" she jumped off the branch, rushing to hand him the chilidog.
He smiled, "Amy…" He lightly took a hold of her hands, moving the chilidog back to her. "I got it for you."
She was trying to fight back tears.
"Amy, there's something else." He looked away, as though afraid to see further pain in her face.
"What else could there be?" Her voice broke, leaving him to twitch at how downright sad it sounded.
"Shadow and I… We've been asked to take the Chaos Emeralds."
With that line, Amy's head shot up.
"What? But if you do that-! Ah… Eggman…" her eyes bent in distress, but Sonic never let go of her hands, shaking his head and stepping closer.
"No worries, Amy." He said her name in a way that spread a warm light of comfort through her being, as though he had summoned a sunrise in this cold night. "I need you, Tails, and Knuckles to be amazing while I'm gone. Take care of this world. I'll be back before you know it." He winked.
"Knuckles… how'd he take it?" She knew the echidna well, and by Sonic's faint chuckle, she knew he hadn't told him yet. "Are me and Tails the only ones who know?"
"Rouge knows." He clarified. "She's the one who's gonna steal the Emeralds." He scratched the back of his head, as though not wanting to admit that part of the plan.
"I'm gonna miss you…" Amy closed her eyes, lowering her head as the warmth of the chilidog in her hands began to fade.
"…I'll miss you too, Amy." He just stared at her, but Amy shook her head and forced a smile on her face.
"I want to come too!"
"I knew you wouldn't take this that easily." Sonic sighed, seeing her true colors finally come forth as she held a determined look in her eyes.
"But I can, right?"
"A stowaway? What would Shadow say?"
"Who cares!" She threw her hands up and tackled into him.
"A-Am-Amy-Amy-Amy! The Chilidog!" Sonic's heart raced when Amy held him and wouldn't let him dive for the now airborne chilidog.
He lightly moved her aside and caught it, skidding along the ground to do so. "Phew."
"Really?" Amy said, placing her hands on her hips. "For a chilidog?"
"Hey, it's not just any Chilidog…" He dusted himself off, coming back to her, "It's your chilidog."
She gasped, amazed by his kindness as he gestured for her to take it back.
She giggled, lightly scooping it out of his hands to receive it again.
"Hehe, you remind me of someone…" She walked towards the tree again.
"Oh, yeah? Who?" That was a first. "Anyone I know?" Sonic raised an eyebrow, thinking she was going to talk about his younger years again.
"Emm… well, I don't like talking about him… but you reminded me just then… a little of my Ex."
As she hopped back up on the tree branch, Sonic's cool and charismatic nature suddenly toppled over in a stumble of confused footfalls.
He groped for the branch and tried to stand upright again, "Your WHAT?!"
His knees grew slightly wobbly, a strange sensation he had never felt before.
He clung to the branch, faking a composed look towards her. "Sorry, I think I misheard you there, Amy…"
"Oh?" She had her mouth open to eat, not really reacting to his stumbled lost of balance. "What'd you think I said?"
"Something about… well, it's kinda ridiculous. Considering… I'm the only guy you've ever liked… right?"
"Oh, no. I had a boyfriend before I met you." As nonchalantly as she had said it the first time, another bomb dropped as she took a bite of her retrieved chilidog.
Sonic's grip slipped and his hand reached up to the sky, his leg trying to forcefully pull the rest of him up onto the branch.
"You… You've gotta be kidding me." His eyes shook in small buttons over the whites of his eyes. "You… You had a boyfriend?" his mouth grew dry and it suddenly felt very hot in the night.
"Em-hmm." She chimed, chewing her food and refusing to speak while her mouth was full.
He crawled on the branch towards her, still uncertain of her words. "H-h-hey, Amy… Be honest with me right now, you're joking… r-right?" he was like a chameleon, shaking back and forth as he tried to take his first few steps along the branch and approach her.
"Eh-em." She shook her head swiftly back and forth, continuing to eat and then swallow.
"I… Really?" He took a seat by her, scratching behind his head and letting his head drop. "Dang, Amy… I guess this whole time… I just assumed you weren't as… normal like that."
"Huh?" Amy looked a tad insulted by that last statement. "What does that mean?"
"W-well…" Sonic decided to choose his battles wisely. "This isn't another… Dexter, thing, is it?"
"No. He was a real boy." Amy gave Sonic a puzzled look, as though annoyed by his rejection of the idea. "What? Are you jealous or something?"
Sonic pouted and stood up straight, crossing his own legs. "Why would I be jealous? What's there to be jealous of?"
"Hehe, he would say the exact opposite of you." Amy giggled into her hand.
"He would?" Sonic's interest suddenly peaked. Amy sounded sincere, but who could this 'mysterious first boyfriend' be?
"H-how long ago was it?" he was trying to do the math.
"When I was younger." She gave him another death glare, "Why?"
"N-no reason… How long did you two stay together?" He, again, decided to choose his words wisely.
"About a year, when you started showing up around town." She took another bite.
"Ah…" Sonic let one leg down and relaxed a bit, "Poor guy." He lifted his head up, closing his eyes as he pictured a sad little boy crying his eyes out as Amy charged after his younger self.
"He dumped me."
The strings from the crickets that night seemed to snap off their violins.
Sonic was a bit shaken up by that statement too, looking over to Amy with a flabbergasted expression. "He… Oh." He looked sadly to her, then away. "Sorry, I guess I've been assuming a lot tonight…"
"Yes." Amy looked back at him, showing her slight annoyance. "You have." Then she smiled, showing all was well. "It was a long time ago… but I still really do love him."
That last statement seemed to conflict a lot with Sonic.
It was like something deep inside him didn't believe that.
"Do tell?" Wait, was that him asking? Or was he just that curious?
She sighed, "I don't like talking about it. I never wanted to bring him up around you, either. I hear it's bad luck to talk about your Exs' when you're in a relationship."
He muttered to himself, "Who's in a relationship?" and then continued but at a normal talking range, "What was his name? It's not like he's come back for you after all these years. And… to be honest, I've never really asked about your past."
"That's true." Amy blushed a little, "Teehee, but still, I wouldn't want you to think I don't love you now or something like that."
Her face… it was really full of thought and gently living in a past memory. He noticed, too. Because usually, Amy was always focusing on him with those sweet, adoring eyes.
For the first time, Sonic saw Amy having those sweet eyes glance off into the distance… away from himself… longing for something that had been denied her long ago.
"I want to know…" His voice was soft, more enticing the information out of her than she was previously used too.
She looked back to him, amazed by the look he gave her.
"…W-well," she ducked her head a little, surprised he was so interested in her all of a sudden. "His name was… Nikki."
"Many Years Ago, Nikki asked me to be his girlfriend. Before that, I was always harassed by this other boy, his name was Anton. Nikki was a bit of a shy boy… always scared to really butt-heads with Anton…" Amy began, and as she did, the night sky shifted into a dots of a picture, showing them moving to the narration of her story.
"Wow, the popular girl, huh?" Sonic snickered, "Good for you, Amy."
"It's wasn't always as good as it sounds…" Amy pouted, but winked to Sonic. "But yeah, I was a wanted woman."
"Go on." Sonic rolled his eyes.
"Hehe! Well, before I was a rascal, I was very much an advocate. I used to fight for things, quite a lot actually… Nikki would always have something going on, and I would lovingly scold him for not eating his PB&J sandwich right and getting sticky jelly all over his jersey; Or falling into mud and getting his glasses all smudged up. Either way, Nikki was a handful of a boyfriend, but I really did wash up his adorable face, full of peanut butter and jelly… or clean his glasses with my skirt to make sure he could see the mud puddle better next time. He was the sweetest thing. He always called me wonderful or kind." Amy went on and on, and as she did so, Sonic couldn't help but watch her face slowly revert back into that little girl again. A girl he didn't know.
"Again," He stated, "Poor guy." He smiled, nudging her arm.
"Hee! Hey… You're pretty lucky I don't have to scold you so much." She styled a slashed line with her mouth, as though a playful threat.
"Heh… what happened then? Sounds nice." Sonic put his chin in his hand, listening and wondering when he would come along in the story.
Everything sounded weird. Normal weird. That's what was weird about it.
Nothing was familiar to how he knew Amy, either. So domestic. He just couldn't handle that kind of life.
"…Nikki wanted to be strong, but he couldn't seem to bring himself to do it." Amy's voice changed, along with her once sweet gaze…
The stars bore a new picture, as though teleporting Sonic into the past at lightspeed.
-Many years ago-
"You can't take on me, Nikki!" Anton had Amy over his shoulder, looming over Nikki. "I'm the real man Amy needs!"
"You're being such a butt head!" Amy cried out, "Nikki!" she looked to him, hoping he would do something and save her.
She was very small at this age, and Anton was a huge boy for his age.
But Nikki froze there… trembling.
His glasses fogged up as Anton feigned a punch, laughing as Nikki shrunk away and blocked his face.
"Hahah! Such a loser! Dork!" he kicked him down.
"Nikki!" Amy couldn't take it anymore, "Leave my boyfriend alone!" she pounded at Anton's head, a hardshell with nothing in it as far as she was concerned.
She hadn't discovered her Piko Piko Hammer at this age, and she didn't train herself for combat until after journeying with Sonic… So she kicked and squirmed, but to no avail.
"Come on, Babe. I'm the one for you…" Making kissy-faces at her, she continued to fight back, looking to Nikki as he gripped his head, rushing away.
"Nikki…" He was running away again. He always ran away.
"Look at him! Scared so badly he's gonna wet himself! Hahah!" Anton laughed, but Amy would defend Nikki with all her heart.
She slammed a foot into his boisterous mouth, "Let's see how you like getting kicked!" she shouted out, forcing Anton to fling her from her.
"PAh! PEw! Ugh!" he coughed up her shoe's dirt as she went flying.
"Ahhh!" But as soon as she thought she'd hit ground, something fast and marvelous scooped her up into his arms.
"Oh?" she looked up to see… "Sonic!" she exclaimed, excited a true hero had stepped forward as he raced her to safety.
At this point, they hadn't properly met, and wouldn't until Amy chased him all the way to the Little Planet.
"Pick on someone your own size!" Sonic dashed over and homing attacked into Anton, who was too dim-witted and slow to really reflex fast enough to hit him away.
For all his strength, he was nothing compared to pure, blue speed.
"Thank you so much, Sonic!" Amy placed her hands together, eyes shining with admiration as Sonic zoomed in front of her, facing Anton's now swirling eyes.
"Let that teach you to not mess with pretty girls! They hate to be man-handled!" he waved his scolding finger in Anton's face before rushing off.
"Excuse me, miss! I've got a city to run through!" he reeved up his feet in a fast-moving figure eight and took off in a Sonic Second!
Amy swooned before remembering that Nikki had rushed off by himself. "Oh, Nikki…" She worriedly took off to find him.
Asking around, she finally found him, yelling as he held a crowbar above his head.
"Oh, dear!" Amy grabbed the crowbar, "Nikki! Stop!"
They tustled a moment before Nikki finally opened his frightened eyes and looked around, "Wah? Amy? But I thought…" He looked back to a fainted Anton, who woke up crying and cowering back to his family. "What happened..?"
"Sonic The Hedgehog swooped in and saved me!" Amy's eyes shone with stars. "He's the new handsome hero that everyone's been talking about!"
"H-handsome?" Nikki's face grew grave.
"Oh, Nikki…" Amy looked at the crowbar that he was still holding onto, yanking it from his hands. "Don't you know how dangerous this is?" She shook it lightly in front of him. "Anton could have grabbed it from you and whacked you over the head with it! Then my boyfriend would have had a dent for a head!"
Nikki's mouth shook like a wobbled wire, "I'm sorry, Amy… I just wanted to save you… B-but I didn't know how."
"It's okay, Nikki. All that matters is that we love each other." She hugged him, tossing the crowbar aside. "And I love you, Nikki! To the moon and back!"
Nikki usually hugged her back in these moments, but his hands twitched, thinking about her comment about Sonic.
"…But… I can't save you like Sonic can."
"That doesn't matter! Why are you saying stuff like that?" She pulled back and held Nikki in front of her. "Now, you listen here, Nikki! I'm your girlfriend, right?"
"R-right." Nikki hesitantly stated.
"And who's my boyfriend?"
"M-me?" His eyes seemed to well-up with tears.
"That's right." She nodded, sweetly smiling at his expression. "Now, don't go crying on me, Nikki! Sonic is really needed right now. I'm just excited to see him! After all, someone has to stand up to injustice like that mean ol'Robotnik!"
She placed her hands on her hips and closed her eyes, glaring at the image she had seen only in a newspaper.
"Grrr..! If I was strong enough… I'd teach that Robotnik not to mess with us!" She got herself pumped up, and Nikki's face turned red at her bravery.
"You'd do that? Take on Ro-Ro-Robotnik with just your bare hands?"
"Hehe~ I'd probably borrow your crowbar, if that's okay." She kissed his cheek and then winked, "You can stand behind me, Nikki. I'll protect you from his robotizing machine!"
"B-but what if you get robotized!" His face grew into a panicked worry, gripping the sides of his head. "My girlfriend would be a robot!"
"Hey! A cute robot! And besides, that's not gonna happen. Not as long as Sonic is leading the charge!" she fantasied a little, making a dumb face as she pictured fighting beside Sonic The Hedgehog and an army of other fellow peers to take on the evil tyrant.
"L-like Sonic…" Nikki grew depressed again. "I'll never compare to someone as cool as him."
"Oh, come on, Nikki! Stop with the negative talk! What'd I say before?" She lifted his face up, cupping it with both hands. "Now, repeat after me. I'm a decently good fellow!"
"I'm… A loser." Nikki sunk into her loving touch.
"Hey! Wake up!" Amy scolded, bolting him back to life.
"I'm a decently good fellow!"
"I'm a decently good fellow…" He muttered in the most depressive voices, slowly sinking back into her warm touch.
"And I can be strong! Just like Sonic!"
"And I can be strong… J-just like… My amazingly beautiful girlfriend! Amy Rose!" he took her hands and started balling tears, but Amy just smiled at his endearing words.
"You're really too much, Nikki. But I'll always be here for you."
-Back to present time-
"This guy sounds pathetic." Sonic raised a hand up, almost shrugging, "No wonder he was always jealous. You kept comparing him to me."
WHACK!
"Ow, hey!" Sonic rubbed his head, as Amy's hammer disappeared and she glared at him.
"Don't ever insult Nikki again! Understand?" she gave him one final warning before nudging him in the arm, "Only I can call him a cute weakling, okay?"
"Yikes,… you still really care about this guy, don't you?" Sonic rubbed his arm, squinting one eye shut.
"Hmm… I like to think he's still out there… thinking about me somewhere." She looked up at the stars.
"What happened with you two? Sounds like a pretty good place to be, if I were him." Sonic felt something inside him when he said that but didn't bother to explore it.
Amy's face suddenly turned cold and blank. The space above her head, beckoning Sonic on another adventure turned quiet and cruel just then.
"He left me." She looked down, her eyes covered in the darkness as Sonic furrowed his brow.
"Oh… that's right. I forgot about that… wait, what?! Why?! He had everything when he had you!" Sonic was surprised by what he so bluntly stated, and quickly shook his head. "I-I mean… You were so kind to him…"
"…I guess it wasn't enough." She looked away. "I knew why he did it… but that hurt even more…"
-Long ago…-
"Nikki! Don't lag behind! Come on! Someone said Sonic was this way!" Amy was rushing through the alleyways of the city, having heard Sonic was there, and desperately wanting to ask him to join a rebellion she was planning.
No one had signed up yet… unfortunately… but that wasn't going to stop her!
"Once everyone learns that Sonic is coming to my rebellion, they'll have the courage to take down that stupid Robotnik!" she peered over the corner, then looked the other way down the street. "Huh, not here either… Nikki! Where are you? Oh… there you are!" she cooed, seeing him huffing and puffing as he tried to keep up with her.
"You're…ha…ho… going… ha…ho… too fast!" he clutched his knees as she finally gave him a second to catch some wind.
"Ohhhh… You're the slow one. I've gotta find Sonic! He's super fast, you know. And I still can't believe you've never seen him before!" she turned to look around, "There's no sign of him… when I came to find him, you were just getting here. You sure you didn't see a blue blur flash by?"
"Amy… I told you…" He whined, "I didn't see anything… Anton must have hit me so hard, I don't remember anything… besides wanting to be stronger… for you…" he held himself, suddenly remembering something.
"Amy..?"
"Not now, Nikki. Sonic's a foot!"
"…Amy…"
"Hold on, Nikki. I'm sure he's around here… somewhere!"
"Okay…" Nikki quietly tagged along… until…
He put his foot down, "…You'd be better off with Sonic."
"What was that?" She turned around, "I can't hear you, Nikki. Come on, you know I love to hear your loud, confident voice!" she cheered, "You know, like we practiced!"
He took a deep breath, and adjusted himself. "Amy. I think you should find Sonic on your own. He's strong. He's fast, and… And… And I don't want to be your boyfriend anymore!"
It was like a penny had dropped to set off a landmine.
"W.. What?" Her heart cracked, "Nikki… You don't mean that…"
She reached out for him.
His head was down, tears streaming through his eyes.
"Sonic's so cool… he'd be at your rebellion. But I'm a scaredy cat. I can't even look Anton in the eye when he grabs you and runs off with you in his car!"
"Anton's a bully, Nikki. I've never blamed you for-" She continued to approach him, but he pushed her hand back.
"No! You shouldn't be with me! You love Sonic! That's the man who should be your boyfriend, not me!" he stepped back, eyes closed and not daring to look at her.
"Nikki… don't do this." Amy's eyes began to water too. "Look at me, Nikki… I… I love you."
-Back at the current time's tree branch-
"Urk!" Sonic's head began to give him a splitting headache.
He collapsed from the tree, jumping back up and hobbling in uneasy steps towards the forest side.
"Sonic?" Amy looked a bit frightened, "What happened? Are you okay?" she jumped down too, putting her chilidog down by the tree branch and rushing to him.
"I… You said…" He felt his eyes tearing up, but why?
There was something else too… he felt sleepy, nauseated, but… why?
"You said… you said you loved him… and then… he… I said…" his vision started to blur… "What's happening?"
Amy stopped approaching him, "Sonic?" she looked worried, this was the same way he acted before turning into the werehog. "Sonic… tell me what's going on!" she held her hands together, covering her mouth as Sonic's body shook on the ground.
"I… Don't… know…"
The memory flew by-
"You're better off without me." Nikki stepped away from, before fully dashing off with tears streaming down his face. "You'd be better off if Sonic was always here! Always around!"
He turned a corner, gripping his heart as it raced quickly, more than he had ever experienced before.
His thoughts were wild too, stating, 'I'm not a decent fellow, Sonic is! I'm just a pathetic excuse for a boyfriend! Amy deserves a hero… a hero like Sonic! I wish I was strong like him… I wish, for Amy's sake, that I could just be Sonic!"
…Nikki's eyes opened.
"A…Amy?" he turned to look back at her.
"W-…What are you wearing? Wh-where am I?" He looked around, squinting without his glasses. "Are you… did you pick up my glasses?"
Amy's whole mind was reeling. "What are you talking about, Sonic?"
"Sonic?" Nikki looked back at her, "I'm not Sonic, I'm-…" He looked at his strange gloves, "Why are my hands so big? My legs… my…" He looked at his shoes.
"Why am I wearing Sonic's shoes?" he looked to Amy, "Amy… W-where am I?"
Amy shook her head, "What are you talking about..? Is this… Sonic, this isn't funny!"
"I remember… the last thing I remember was saying I didn't want to be your boyfriend anymore…"
"I… I just told you that Nikki said that." Amy was growing defensive. "This isn't funny, Sonic! Don't make fun of me like this! It still hurts! It hurts…" She covered her face with her eyes.
"…Amy, no… D-don't cry…" Nikki got up, unused to the height of his new body, and slowly stumbled over to her.
He hugged her, a little awkwardly, but dipped his head by the side of hers. "I'm here… I'm sorry I yelled at you. I'm not better off without you… I don't want to lose you… So I won't! I won't leave, Amy. I won't just disappear from your life! I'm sorry… I shouldn't have said those things to you. I was just… upset and angry at myself."
Amy's eyes widened, looking back up into Sonic's face. "I never told you that." She barely whispered it. "How'd you know the last thing he said to me..?"
"Wh-What are you talking about?" He pulled slightly away, looking into her shocked eyes. "I just said that, then I think I had another fainting spell again. My heart beats really fast and I blackout, I told you that happens sometimes."
She pushed him away, "I never told you that about him either!" she was getting creeped out. "Sonic… You're scaring me!"
"Scaring… But I'm not Sonic!" He gestured out, stepping towards her, "Amy… I'm Nikki!"
"What..?" Amy still didn't understand. "Sonic, quit it! I… You're acting just like him."
"But I am, Nikki! Sonic… I don't know where he is. We'll find him tomorrow, okay? W-…Why is it so dark? When did we… Why are we in a forest? Why'd you change your hair, anyway? What's… going on…" He gripped his head. "Amy… I feel like… I've been asleep for a long time… I don't understand. It never usually feels like this. My heart racing… it was so fast, faster than it's ever raced before. And now… Now that I've come to, it feels worse than any other time I've awoken before. What's going on? Amy? Amy, why do you look so afraid? It's me. It's Nikki."
It wasn't long before Amy rushed Sonic to Tails, who did a thorough brain scan on him.
"What do you mean, duel personality?" Amy blinked her eyes, amazed by what she was hearing.
Tails was also equally stumped, but continued, "Apparently, Sonic has a split-personality disorder. When he's triggered, his heart speeds up and his brain immediately alternates to an alterative him, opposite to his nature."
"…So… Sonic doesn't exist?" Amy's eyes shook, stepping back to the desk where Nikki, glasses and new jersey, stared at her in love and worry.
"Mr. Tails, there must be some mistake." Nikki spoke up, "I'm not Sonic. And Sonic is real." He looked to Amy, gently showing her his reaching hand, but she just couldn't let him touch her.
He lowered it, afraid of making it worse and rubbed his arm with it.
"Nikki… or Sonic. I'm not sure who is the true persona. All I know is that… Nikki IS Sonic. Sonic was Nikki. But now, Sonic is the dormant personality, and Nikki is the one walking and talking with us now."
Tails gestured to Nikki, who immediately grew shy and pushed his pointer-fingers together. "I… I can't believe it. I'm actually Sonic The Hedgehog?" he nervously took a glance at Amy again, "Anton? The village? Is everyone..?"
"That was years ago." Amy pushed her eyes shut, torn between two lovers who were really one in the same, sharing a body… "I'm sorry, Son-… Nikki. I can't do this. I can't be here right now!" She raced and slammed the door, making Nikki flinch.
"This is really hurting her… I don't understand though. She barely knew Sonic… why isn't she… um… happy that I've come back?" He turned to Tails, who was acting just as distant as Amy was.
"Umm… Well… She kinda…" he scratched the back of his head, having been told by Amy that Nikki was a close friend from her past. He didn't know that his next words would change the course of Nikki's life… "She loved him. I mean, she loves Sonic. She wants to marry him, so it's understandable that she's really conflicted right now that he's two separate people at the moment."
If Amy's heart shattering like glass wasn't detailed enough, Nikki's body was shot through with a high-racing bullet, piercing his heart like a hunted fowl, with the hunter having no sympathy for his state of mind.
With he feathers exploding everywhere, Nikki was left in a darkness within his mind.
"She… She loves him?" he felt behind him for the table, leaning on it. "But… She loves me." He placed his hand over his face. "…I… Tell Amy I went out for a breath of fresh air." He took off.
"Wait! Sonic-I mean, Nikki! Don't go too far!" Tails cried out, but Nikki stumbled out the garage door, breathing hard, looking around for a safe location.
He ran as fast as his normal little legs could go, not realizing the powerful speed they could reach, and fell to his knees at the cliffside.
"Sonic!" he cried out, gripping his head. "I don't know where you are… I don't even know if you exist while I'm around, but-!" he looked up to the sky, his glossy eyes having their tears caught by the rim of his glasses. "She loves you… doesn't she? I knew she was better off with you… I just…" He hit his hand to the ground, pounding it repeatedly into the cliff's tip.
"I love her! I gave her up once, but you've never done that! At least… I don't know if you have. I don't hardly know anything about you… But she was my girlfriend, and you… you were the opposite of me, so does that mean you… did you love her? Did you not? I don't know. But she's clearly better off with you than wimpy ol'me." He hugged himself, closing his eyes. "Come back, Sonic! You're a hero! I'm a nobody! Even if I'm the real personality. Even if I'm the real Sonic. Amy needs you… Tails is your best friend… I love Amy so much… I want her to have everything she's ever wanted. She's helped me so much… she's given me so much love… I can't do this to her! I can't take the man she really loves away from her!"
There was silence… some seagulls… nothing more.
"Please… I'm a nobody…" He fell to a sitting position, letting his hands go limp by his side. "She loves you now… I'm just Nikki. I can't be with her, not in this world." He looked around him at the beautiful lake, and Angel Island, which gave him the heebie-jeebies.
"Sonic… Amy's who she is because of you, right? I'm not you… but she needs you. If I'm the you that loves her then…" He blinked his eyes open, seeing his glasses were smudged again.
He chuckled, pulling them off and wiping them on his fresh new shirt. "But we're one and the same, aren't we, Sonic? We both care about her… I know there's not a soul alive who wouldn't be in love with Amy Rose. She's a rascal! Haha, but she's also so kind and strong… I can't be strong. No matter how hard I try… I can't be good enough for her. But you… can't you and I have her? Can't we share? If there's no way for us to be one and the same… then I'll hate her! I'll do everything in my power to despise her so that when you come back again, and you have to come back again…, that you will love her as much as I do!"
For the first time in his life, Nikki took a stand.
He got up, spreading his arms out wide, a clear look of anger on his face. "Do you hear me!? Come back! And when you do- I'll make sure you love her! You'll love her so much, you'll hate me for it! Heh. I won't let you not love her! If you're truly Sonic The Hedgehog, then you'll give me this last wish. I'll be the forgotten you. I'll be the dominant personality. But you don't dare forget! Don't you even once think you can! You will love her! All of her, too! You'll be there for her like I could never be!"
Amy had come to a resolve, stepping back into the garage as Tails worriedly looked distraught, gazing out the garage door.
"What's wrong, Tails?" she was wiping her eyes, calming down somewhat. "Where's Nikki?"
"…" Tails was biting his nails.
"Tails..?" Amy looked at where he was looking.
The waves crashed against the cliff where Nikki stood and shouted, unable to hear him from this distance, the wind rushing by him too loudly…
She gasped, "Nikki! No!" She raced towards him, "No, Nikki! Don't jump! Please! Nikki!"
She knew Sonic would survive, no problem. But Nikki?
Nikki couldn't hear her, challenging Sonic by stepping closer to the edge.
"Come out! Amy doesn't need me in this world. You're the hero! So let's see you save me, instead!"
"Nikki! Don't! Please, wait!" she reached up for him, but tripped over a rock, crashing down as Nikki lowered his arms…
"NIKKIII!" Amy shouted, but he stepped over the edge, dropping his glasses.
"SOOOOOOOOOOONNNNNNNNNNNNIIIIIIIIIIIIICCCCCCCC!"
Like a blue whirlwind, a gust of a blue blur spiraled around the cliffside and reversed the strong winds, causing a gentle breeze that blasted by Amy while it stilled.
Her eyes were now bloodshot, her voice gone with that loud shout from her heart as the jersey blew off and floated down the cliffside into the sea.
The blue hedgehog opened his eyes, smiling.
"…Nikki..?" she mouthed, unable to speak properly.
He continued to stare.
"…S…Sonic?" She mouthed again, but this time, her eyes sparkled in renewed hope.
He smiled.
She silently wept, as he walked over to her and picked her up bridal style.
"I know what happened." Sonic stated.
Amy just listened, looking up at him.
"…He knows." Sonic nodded, closing his eyes as he ducked his head towards her. "And he loves you."
She mouthed, "Is he still there?"
Sonic nodded, "But he's not in control… He won't be here long. His will lingered… but he's going to leave for good this time… he's not coming back this time, Amy."
Her eyes widened, mouthing, "No…"
"We can't exist at the same time, Amy. To make sure I stay, permanently this time, he's going to disappear."
She silently cried into his chest again, mouthing Nikki's name over and over again as she rubbed her stinging eyes into Sonic's chest.
Sonic bent to a knee, waiting patiently and quietly as Amy whispered her last farewell.
"Tell him… Tell him I love him too…"
"He hears you. He knows."
From within Sonic's being, he could feel Nikki pleading, and so… Sonic took a deep breath.
"And I love you too."
When Sonic left for space, Amy told herself it was Nikki. He was leaving to be the hero he always wanted to be.
Out in space, Shadow noticed Sonic's quiet contentedness. He wasn't his usual joking self, not for the first part of the adventure, anyway.
They turned super and found the comet to be a deadly foe, but even after the fight, Sonic could feel there was no trace of Nikki left.
Except for something that stayed with him.
'Love her… Sonic, please. Just love her. Love her more. Love her so much more than me. If you have to be my opposite, then love her greater than me. I was so afraid, I was so weak. My love was fearful and weak. Love her like the hero you are. Strong and brave. Bravely love her. Strongly love her. I don't want to leave… unless I know you'll look after her.'
"Sonic?" Shadow inquired, snapping Sonic out of his deep, emotional thoughts.
"Huh? Yeah?"
"…You alright?"
"Head in the game!" Sonic beamed, shooting him a thumbs up.
Shadow raised a questioning eyebrow.
"Alright, ya got me. It's just-" He looked away a moment, "…I'm missing someone. A part of me I didn't know existed… I guess I wish I knew more about it. But… I think I'm also missing my friends too."
Shadow smiled, "Get the job done and you'll be back on earth, receiving your hero's praises, soon." he went back to his duties, but Sonic still looked at himself, trying to feel Nikki again.
When he couldn't, he sighed and looked back at the small dot Earth had become.
'Promise..?'
Amy's loud shout for his name echoed in Sonic's mind.
"…I'll do my best." He muttered.
"I'll try."
