Coming back from just defeating Emerl, Cream was very depressed, and stayed within her room, not feeilng hungry and eating with the others.
Tails looked up towards where her room was, before continuing to eat, but only holding the bread in his mouth, looking worried.
The whole crew sighed, as Ella looked up as well. "She hasn't been down yet… I'm growing a little worried…"
"Well, he was someone special to Cream. They never really did leave each other's side…" Amy commented, before fiddling with her food by having her spoon turn it every now and then.
Everyone sighed again.
"Sometimes, you have to deal with what's going on inside by yourself. It's just how it has to be." Sonic shrugged, leaning back in his chair, looking relaxed. "I'm sure she'll be okay soon. For now, she'd expect us to smile and continue being happy!"
The others looked to Sonic and smiled, but something in the back of Tails's mind told him he needed to check…
'Just in case.' He told himself, jumping down as he waved to Chris, winking, "I'm just gonna make sure she's okay."
Chris nodded, "Okay. I'll make sure Sonic doesn't stop ya." He winked back.
Tails nodded and left quietly as Amy tried to feed Sonic, who was more than reluctant at the gesture.
With that distraction, Tails flew up silently to where Cream had locked herself in her room.
He looked down.
The plate there was still not taken…
He made a face, before folding his arms and putting one hand up to his chin… thinking…
"Ah! That'll do it!" Tails laid a palm out and hit his fist within it, getting an idea before picking the dish up, and lifting the window open.
Cream stood on the balcony that usually Amy thought or daydreamed at, before seeing something coming from below.
She had her head down and her ears drooped even more forward, resting on the railing, but her head shot up and so did her ears when she saw Tails flying up with food.
"Ah! M-…Mr. Tails!"
"Chao, Chao!" Cheese was previously trying to comfort her, before being startled and just as surprised as Cream.
He happily flew up to Tails and cuddled the side of his cheek.
"Haha! It's good to see you too, again, Cheese." He smiled politely, and flew towards Cream, holding out her food. "Ella said you hadn't eaten all day. We figured, you might want to be alone right now, but that shouldn't keep you from a full stomach." he lightly placed it down on the table there, before flying closer to her face. "You okay, Cream?"
He tried to remember what Sonic said, that Cream would want everyone to smile.
But something still nagged him…
She smiled up to him, before bending her head down, her ears drooping over her face again.
"…You know… Cream?" Tails looked down and away then too, before scratching behind his head. "I figured… if I just lost someone.. I wouldn't want to feel even more alone… Not ever. Especially then."
Cream's head twitched up, and her mouth started to form a swiggly line.
"Mr… Mr. Tails… I … I don't want to be alone… M…Mr. Tails."
Tails looked back down, "Huh?"
She flapped her ears up, "I don't want to be alone!" she cried out, tears falling as she jumped into his arms, making him a little startled.
"C…Cream…" he arched his eyebrows back, before hovering there with her, and hugging her back.
"It's okay, Cream. We're all here for you… and if you want… I could stay awhile. Just until you feel ready to see everyone. Would you like that?" He pulled her away just slightly to look at her face, as she nodded, and held onto him tighter.
This made him smile, closing his eyes before Cheese flew on the other side of them and started crying and hugging him too, making him nervously laugh a little as well.
He let her curl up with his tails as she silently cried about her lost, departed friend. And after a while, he unlocked the door and stepped out, holding a hand to her.
"Are you ready, Cream?" His smile was encouraging.
He tilted his head, looking charmingly comforting.
'I don't get why Sonic has issues with hugging. I mean, I can understand Amy. But Cream's hugs are nice. They make me feel… l-like I actually did something good for once!'
He smiled more at his thoughts.
She made him feel like a hero.
She rubbed her eyes and took a strong stance, looking up, determined to show everyone that she would be alright.
"Chao..?" Cheese flew to her side, still worried about her.
She looked to her friend and shook her head, "I'm ready to show everyone that I'm gonna be just fine. You'll put on a smile for everyone and really mean it too. Won't you Cheese?"
He suddenly beamed, and nodded, flying in a circle and shouting out praises of joy.
She genuinely smiled and giggled, before happily skipping up and taking Tails's hand, going down the stairs.
"I'm here, everyone!"
"Oh! Cream!"
"Miss Ella!"
"Cream!"
"Miss Amy!"
Cream leaped into their arms, as Sonic smiled down at them, and Chris and his grandpa looked happy to have them back too.
"We were really worried about you, Cream. Did you eat anything?" Chris leaned down, as Tails came in, a clean plate in his hands.
"She sure did. Politely ate and didn't put up much of a fight." Tails smiled, looking happy he was able to help her.
"Heh, I guess I was wrong, Tails." Sonic looked to him, and unfolded his arms, giving him a thumbs up and signature smile with a wink to boot. "You may have better instincts at this than I do, pal!"
That praise really sent a swarm of humble blush marks to Tails's face, and he scratched behind his head again, his tails swishing behind him.
"Thanks, Sonic! Haha!"
Cream then ran back, looking behind her, and jumped into Tails's arms. "Oh, Mr. Tails! Thank you! Thank you so much!"
He blinked a moment at the sudden jump, but held out his hands to her and smiled, watching her take them smile up to him.
He had given her strength to know she wasn't alone.
What a foreshadowing… of things to come. (Cream comforts him with Cosmo a while after that ;) )
