Jere's POV

Friday and Saturday flew, by Sunday morning I was packing my bags to leave later that evening after dinner. Madison ran in my new pink frilly room, tackling my knees. "Please stay the whole summer!"

"I can't," I patted her head. "I have to work, but ill try to come back before it's over Maddie."

She beamed up at me, "UNCLE JERE IS COMING BACK NEXT WEEKEND!" She ran out screaming. I guess I set myself up for that one.

When I walked downstairs Taylor was cutting up some breakfast for the kids, "Good morning."

Eggs and waffles, that I'm positive were both ordered from a local diner. "Smells good," I eye the left overs on the counter.

She smiles, "Go for it."

Conrad and Steven had some errands to run for the fourth of July next week, they asked if I wanted to go but I didn't really feel up to it and they said it would be a short trip.

"Where's Belly?" I ask curiously.

Taylor eyes the pool area and looks back at me, "Jut hanging out." She then gives me a grin that I didn't quite grasp the reason behind it. I grabbed a fork and sat next to Madison and Kyle, "So what's going on in toddler world?"

"I'm not a toddler!" Madison said angrily. "I'm a big kid now uncle Jere."

"Right, yes practically a teenager."

"No," She laughs. "I'm not a grown up!"

"Either is Uncle Jere," Taylor adds.

"Ha-ha so funny."

In that moment I look over at Kyle, he's old enough to talk but definitely does not really engage with me. I wonder if he he hates me. All kids love me.

"Why do you sleep in mommy's room?"

I looked Madison confused, "What?"

Taylor sucked her lips in, her eyes wide.

"I just want to know why you sleep in mommy's room instead of a different room?"

That's when it all came together now. That pink frilly room was for Belly, Madison had her original room and she'd been sleeping in MY ROOM. "Oh, I just the color blankets in there."

Madison nodded. "Me too."

I didn't really think much when my comforter and pillows went missing, I didn't even question why the drawers didn't have any of my old clothes in them. But now I realized how stupid I've been! Belly and Conrad sleep in different rooms!

I look at Taylor upset, "How long has that been going on?"

Taylor shrugged, amused at this new finding. "Christmas."

I scoot closer to Taylor, "Why though?"

"It's not my business."

"Just tell me Taylor or so help me-" She put a hand up.

"All I can say is, Belly hasn't been the same since Luna was born."

I look over at the kids scarfing down eggs and waffles. What could have changed?

I instinctively walk over to the door, about to pull it open and go talk to Belly when she opens it up. "Oh, sorry I didn't see you."

"It's okay, I was just coming to look for you," I feel my throat tighten. I realized I'm not going to ask her what's wrong.

"Tay, I have to go grab some things from the store for dinner- can you watch the girls?" She asks, ignoring me. Walking past me like I'm a ghost.

"Of course."

Like word vomit I say, "I'll go to."

Belly looks back at me, surprised. "If you want."

"I mean three and a half kids, I could use some help Jere," Taylor interjected.

"You're a big girl you can handle yourself," I smile at her.

Belly just looks between us both, confused.

I grab the keys to my car off the hook, "I'll drive." Just like that I made my first mistake of many to come.

Inside my car I realize there was a loud silence stirring. I thought how maybe I should have stood home, fed Luna and stood quiet. "So.."

Belly looks at me then the road, "This is a nice car Jere," She said it flatly.

"Thanks," I nod my head. "It's modest, like me." I give her a grin and she smiles back.

"Oh yeah, very modest."

Another few minutes pass and we're parked outside of the store. "I just needed white wine, so you can stay in the car if you want," She says quickly bolting from the car. I realize she didn't want me to go, so I stay behind and fidget on my phone. "Sure thing." I roll down my window, staring at the family beside me. Two dad's and a young girl, maybe eight. They were all putting the groceries in the car, so happy. I want to be happy like that, I think. I shake my head, snapping back to reality.

I call Amanda to confirm dinner for tomorrow. The phone rings for maybe a whole second. "Hey!" She answers excitedly. "It's my main squeeze!" her voice booms through the blue-tooth.

I laugh, "What?"

I hear her rustle, "Sorry Kevin, it's my boo I'll see you around."

I shake my head, she'd bumped into her ex and was trying to get away I assumed.

"Sorry Jere, that one is a stage ten clinger," She sang. "I know he does not come to this target."

"That's okay Boo," I chuckle. "What time should I pick up my new lady for dinner?"

"I guess seven works," She said distracted. "How'd your weekend go lover?"

"It was nice, but I have some juicy gossip when I see you tomorrow night so wear something sexy-" Belly opened the door at that moment with a bag in her hand.

"Ooh, something sexy!" squealed Amanda. I hit end call before she could finish. My face flushed, for some reason I was embarrassed like a child who'd gotten caught behaving badly.

Belly looked amused, "Did you just hang up on your girlfriend?" She climbed in the car and was almost laughing.

"No."

"You did! What is she your secret fling, why did you hang up!" She was laughing now. I felt so silly, I don't know why I hung up, but I got a text from Amanda asking if my phone died. She's not my girlfriend, we're as platonic as it gets- so why did I now want Belly to hear us joking around?

I need to just be honest, tell Belly it's not my girlfriend and I'm single. Pathetic and single.

"No, I just- we're... Amanda's can get pretty raunchy," I laugh. This is my second mistake.

"So, how come you're not telling me and Con that you have someone?"

This is my second change to be honest. "It's just really fresh and I don't think I want to talk about it."

Belly nods, her laughter died down and she's just staring at me now. "She's a lucky girl, this Amanda."

What in the actual hell.

"She is," I say with a nod. "Who knows maybe she'll be Mrs. Fisher one day."

Belly bites her lip and smiles, "Wow, this must be serious."

I look her dead in the eyes, no joking tone. "You never can tell."
