Chapter 4

"Carlos, do you have any photos of the donation you made to the museum?" Marshall asked. At that point, he began to yawn, and he was struggling to keep himself awake.

"I do," said Carlos, and he showed them to everybody. "This is what it looks like. It's another ancient monkey shrine. I think it belongs to the same tribe that prevented us from donating that crown to the museum; as you know, they crowned Mandy their queen when all was said and done."

"It's too bad we don't have a replica," Rubble commented. "Then the monkeys could use that instead of the real one, and not have to worry about Mayor Humdinger."

"Great idea, Rubble, but the monkeys aren't dumb. They know a fake when they spot one. That's why they're so grabby of everything."

"Could we make them another prize?"

"I don't know; it's worth a shot."

By that point, Rocky had finished making the new spinner for the board game, and so everybody got to work very carefully replacing the regular one with the new one. Then Chase and Skye worked together to bring it back to the playground. "Mission accomplished, Ryder, sir!" Chase announced when he contacted Ryder. "Need any more help?"

Ryder began to yawn. "I think we'd better call it a night. The two of you can go back to the Lookout now. The rest of us will camp out here."

"Works for us," said Skye, and the two pups returned their vehicles to the Lookout, putting them back into the right position, before turning them back to their doghouse forms, and proceeding to take a snooze. It felt more like a nap than sleeping, but the pair were grateful to get some rest. Likewise, the other pups, Ryder, and Carlos found a place to camp before grabbing some shuteye themselves.

Skye and Chase did don their uniforms and return to Foggy Bottom the next morning, though.

The next morning, when the police and aviator pup arrived, the monkeys awoke to discover that their prize, Mayor Humdinger, was gone. Naturally, they were red in the face and very cross, but they did not bother to bother Ryder and the others by confronting them, or using one of them as the prize. Carlos decided to ask Big Hairy what was going on with the board game, and translated the giant monkey's "ooka" sounds. "He says that the original item they were going to use for the prize was this very shrine," the jungle archaeologist reported, "but he and the other monkeys admit to assuming Humdinger stole it." He turned back to Big Hairy and said, "I am sorry, but the museum wanted to make an exhibit featuring that shrine. It's only temporary; we'll bring it back. I promise. Humdinger didn't steel it. The only ones that stole anything were you, because you took Adventure Bay's playground's merry-go-round without asking."

The monkeys began to feel a sense of guilt and remorse for what they did. "Stealing is wrong, but it's also wrong to make assumptions the way you did," Chase added. "Mayor Humdinger is under house arrest. Your acts could have led the authorities to assume he was violating the terms and conditions he is sworn to obey as part of the house arrest."

"But what you are saying is that because you thought he stole it, this was your way of punishing him and trying to teach him a lesson. Did I understand that correctly?" Marshall asked, and the monkeys nodded and made more "ooka" sounds.

"Can you tell us why you're playing the game in Foggy Bottom instead of your jungle home?" Ryder asked. The monkeys didn't have an answer for that. "You don't know?" They shook their heads. "Did you not have any space in the jungle?" The monkey shook their heads.

"Oy-oy-oy!" Tracker winced.

The monkeys eventually declared their game a draw and followed the pups, Ryder, and Carlos back to the jungle, showing them the space where they had originally planned to play their game. The space was originally wide-open, surrounded by trees, and had some rivers going around it. But now, there was nothing but fallen trees lying around it. "Was there a big storm?" Everest guessed.

The monkeys struggled to remember if there was, but then Tracker chimed in and said, "Come to think of it, there was a pretty big storm that rolled through here last night; look at all the tree damage." A nearby elephant trumpeted to confirm Tracker's statement as a true statement.

"And you were simply looking for a new space, then?" Skye asked. Big Hairy nodded, still feeling awful about what he and the others did.

Just then, Mandy arrived, wearing said crown. She herself was very cross with Big Hairy and the others, and began scolding them in a very harsh tone. The monkeys tried to explain that they were sorry for what they did, and they were planning to make things right, but she wasn't having it. "This is so out of character for Mandy," Carlos commented. He then tried to explain to Mandy that they had already seen the errors of their actions, but she wasn't having it.

When Ryder showed her some photos he and Zuma had taken (using the pup-pad and a camera attached to Zuma's vehicle), showing how they were using Mayor Humdinger as a prize, her mood instantly changed, and she began laughing. In fact, she was laughing so hard at it, the crown fell off her head and started rolling down the hill. Tracker, Skye, and Chase jumped in their vehicles (without any prompting) and began to follow it. (Skye was eventually able to grab it with her hook.)

Later on, after returning the crown to Mandy, she was about to make "ooka" sounds to apologize for jumping to conclusions, but was interrupted by what felt like an earthquake when Marshall lost his footing (again) and tripped over something hidden (again). Out popped another monkey shrine that looked identical to the one Carlos had donated to the museum, making Big Hairy and the others feel even more embarrassed. "I'm okay!" the Dalmatian announced. "I've got to quit doing that, though."

"What a find!" Rocky exclaimed. "Look at that!"

"It looks like exactly like the shrine that I donated to the museum," Carlos observed. "I had no idea there was more than one. I wish I had; the long-lost tribe that crowned Mandy queen worshiped more than one monkey god, after all."

"Can you monkey use this as your 'prize' in the board game now?" Ryder asked, and the monkeys agreed. An embarrassing scene of bear hugs and other gestures followed, but the pups and Ryder took it in stride. Their "ooka" sounds translated as "Thank you," and Ryder replied, "You're welcome! Whenever your grand prize goes missing, just 'ooka' for help!" The others laughed for a bit. Then they helped the monkeys clear the debris.

Meanwhile, Mayor Goodway was watching the news, and began to panic upon hearing that Mayor Humdinger was back in Foggy Bottom and was out of prison. "Ryder, how long until they put him back in prison?" she asked.

"Calm down, Mayor Goodway," Ryder replied. "His status was changed to that of 'house arrest.' He can't leave Foggy Bottom."

"Oh. Yes. Well, still, he was nothing but trouble to all of us!"

"He was, but what you have to remember is that the new prison warden negotiated with the authorities to make this happen because he didn't want to put up with Mayor Humdinger."

"That's not what I would have done."

"BA-BUCK, BA-GERK!" Chickaletta clucked.

After getting permission to do so from the authorities (via a text), Humdinger called Mayor Goodway via the computer screen on his lair and explained what was going on, as well as show the ankle bracelet. "I can't leave Foggy Bottom," he confirmed, "but through some rehabilitation program they're putting me through, I will eventually be allowed to buy groceries and such with the money I earn from it. Somebody would have to deliver it to me, though. The difference is that I don't have my kittens anymore."

"BA-BUCK, BA-GERK!" Chickaletta clucked.

"Oh, I suppose you're right, Chickaletta," Goodway sighed, assuming her purse chicken wanted her to forgive Humdinger. (In reality, she just wanted more corn to eat.) "It is better to forgive and forget, although I will have trouble forgetting anything the Humdingers do." She turned back to Mayor Humdinger and said, "That's not just you. That also includes Harold."

"I understand," said Humdinger, "and just so you know, I did watch that entire F-Zero tournament on TV. Harold and I had many squabbles over who was the rightful mayor, and I had declared many times he would never be the mayor of anything. But did he listen? No. I was the mayor, not him. He was supposed to obey me and give me any meteor pieces he found. But no; he kept it for himself."

"I see."

"In the end, I also took delight in seeing that girl with the blue hair get her just desserts, too."

"She vowed she'd be back, though. We haven't seen the last of Codi Gizmody; she was ultimately angry with me because I wouldn't sell her Adventure Bay, and so she started teleporting everything and vowing to destroy it. Had she succeeded, all of us would be stuck on the moon right now. I promise you she wouldn't have done that to Foggy Bottom."

"I bet; she'd be terribly disappointed."

As the pups and Ryder reinstalled the stolen merry-go-round, they continued to assure Mayor Goodway that everything was going to be all right, and that she was panicking over nothing, just as she had done with virtually everything in her life. She had a hard time believing the monkey story at first, but the pictures and footage the pups and Ryder had managed to film helped explain it. "No, I get it," she said. "And it doesn't surprise me that your monkey friend Mandy let them have it."

"That's the angriest I've seen her in a long time, dudes," Zuma chimed in. "But when she saw what they were doing to Mayor Humdinger, she burst out laughing. She laughed so hard, she lost her crown. We got it back, though."

"It turns out there was another monkey shrine exactly like the one that Carlos had donated," Chase added, "and so they're using as the prize."

"What do they do with the prize?"

"I don't think they were doing anything special with it; I think it was just a prop for the board game."

"This is one of the silliest things I've ever seen with those monkeys, but if you got them to understand why it was wrong of them to do what they did on both counts, then it makes me even more glad that we have you and the PAW Patrol. Thanks again, Ryder. Thanks for everything."

"BA-BUCK, BA-GERK!" Chickaletta clucked.

"You're welcome, Mayor Goodway," Ryder smiled. "Whenever you have a problem of any kind, just yelp for help!"
