Within the city of Robotropolis…

Sonic: "See ya around, losers!"

a very speedy hedgehog is seen running through the streets, avoiding laser shots from the various Swatbots as they tried to catch her. She turned corners, tripped up the robots, and made the usual taunt as she passed by.

Sonic: "According to our spy network, Robotnik may be planning something big… He's been in his lab a lot more than usual and that has me worried…"

As Sonic began to think aloud, in a split second, before she even had time to react, her head hits something metal. The impact left her knocked out as she laid on her back. A couple of Swatbots come out of the shadows, one's arm being bent hard by the impact.

Swatbot A: "I told you that would work. The pesky rodent had no idea of an ambush."

Swatbot B: "Huh. I guess I owe you a thousand bolts… I am not sure where I am going to get that much…"

Swatbot A: "Nevermind the bolts. We shall settle that matter later. Let us bring the hedgehog to Lord Robotnik."

As Sonic slept, the ringing in her ears began to slowly fade. She opened her eyes, seeing a shape that… should have looked familiar, but she didn't know where.

Robotnik: "Well well, rodent. Did you enjoy your nap? I would hope so, since…"

Sonic: "...R-Rodent…? Wh-Who… are you talking to…? Wh-Who are you?"

This caught Robotnik, and beside him, Snively, by surprise. They were not expecting that kind of response from who they consider their greatest enemy.

Snively: "I-It is a trick, sir! She is simply deceiving you to lower your guard!"

Robotnik: "Quiet, Snively! I'll be the judge of that."

Robotnik said as he approached Sonic, seeing her genuinely terrified. He has known Sonic for years now and not once has she ever showed such a docile and frightened side of her. He smiles wickedly internally but proceeds to pull his best worried act.

Robotnik: "Young lady, are you quite alright? My robots found you just outside my citadel, collapsed on the cold ground. I had worried that you may have caught your end, but, to my relief, you hadn't."

Sonic: "W-Wait… You… saved me?"

Robotnik: "I did. My name is Dr. … Kintobor. Yes… That's it. Do you remember who you are?"

Sonic: "...I… don't… I don't remember anything… I… I came here for… some reason though…"

Robotnik: "Ah yes. Allow me to speak with my assistant privately. Feel free to rest your mind."

Robotnik moves away from the confused hedgehog as he pulls Snively aside. Snively gives him a look, stunned to hear the name 'Kintobor' again.

Snively: "Kintobor? That's a name I haven't heard in years."

Robotnik: "And Sonic hasn't heard it once. I didn't want to risk retriggering any memories because of our frequent fights. I'm surprised she didn't even recognize me, but I'll consider it luck."

Snively: "Well fine. What do you plan to do with her? I personally suggest we just roboticize her while we can."

Robotnik: "Delightfully evil, Snively… But you are not in charge here."

Robotnik then returned to Sonic's side, once again donning his worried act.

Robotnik: "Now, my friend… How are you feeling?"

Sonic: "Truth? A little dizzy still… And maybe curious as to why I'm strapped down on this table…"

Robotnik: "Oh that! That was to prevent you hurting yourself when you woke up, as well as myself. Being in an unfamiliar location can cause one to be a bit… violent. That being said, do you mind if I ask some questions to test your mental faculties?"

Sonic: "Uh… Sure, I guess…"

Robotnik: "Good, good… First question: Does the name "Knothole Village" sound familiar to you?"

Sonic: "Knothole Village? No…"

Robotnik: "Hmm… Second question: Does a group calling themselves the "Freedom Fighters" sound familiar?"

Sonic: "No…"

Robotnik: "Ah, then it's worse than I thought. You have totally forgotten your objective."

Sonic: "My… objective, Dr. Kintobor?"

Robotnik: "Yes, my girl. You see… There is a foul group of mobians that have made their base in the Great Forest. They call themselves 'Freedom Fighters', fighting against freedom and attempting to rule Mobius with an iron fist. Led by that nasty Princess Sally, who plans to overthrow me, a kind and delightful gentleman!"

Sonic seemed… confused. Something wasn't quite right with that story, but at the same time, it felt like she was meant to fight someone… Maybe it was the Freedom Fighters?

Robotnik: "I know it's a lot to think about. Take a little while longer to rest. Me and my assistant need some time to prepare you anyway."

Sonic just shrugs as she shuts her eyes, falling asleep again as Robotnik begins to chuckle to himself evilly…

In Knothole Village, Bunnie and Antoine return from their recon mission without Sonic, which doesn't go unnoticed by Sally, who runs up to them, hoping for good news.

Sally: "Bunnie. Antoine. Glad you two made it back… Where's Sonic?"

Antoine: "We don't know. We lost contact with her. She ran in and did not run back out."

Bunnie: "We waited as long as we could, sugah. But when them Swatbot patrols came out we feared th' worst…"

Sally was worried, but she kept a brave face as she spoke.

Sally: "Alright. Sonic should be fine for now so let's plan a way to get her out. In the meantime, standby while I check in with Rotor."

Antoine salutes as Bunnie waves gently at Sally as the princess goes back into their underground bunker, walking up to Rotor.

Sally: "Rotor? Can you get a visual on Sonic's shoe camera?"

Rotor was seen fiddling with the surveillance system before Sally came in, so it only took a simple switch to be flipped to change to Sonic's shoe camera. Unfortunately, it only showed static.

Rotor: "No can do, princess. The camera is active, but something is causing some interference. So we can't get a visual."

Sally: "How do you know it's active?"

Rotor: "I made some tweaks after Sonic's race with Metal Sonic - with some minor complaints from her, of course… Unless the camera is destroyed in some way, when it's active, a little light on the surveillance monitor will tell me it is online."

Rotor points to the light, which did blink a green color to indicate that it was active.

Sally: "Can you pinpoint Sonic's exact location? That would help too…"

Rotor: "Let's see…"

Rotor pulls up a crude green map of the surrounding area. The green light appeared on the citadel's location.

Rotor: "Strange… It says Sonic is in Robotropolis' Citadel. But she's completely still."

This got Sally even more worried as she feared the worst. She needed to come up with a plan and fast. But as she began to plan, Rotor sees the green light starting to move.

Rotor: "Princess, look! Sonic's starting to move from the citadel and out of Robotropolis!"

As he says this, the camera feed came back online, confirming that Sonic was indeed alive.

Sally: "Ah thank goodness! Come on. Let's meet her halfway."

Sally and Rotor ran out of the base, Rotor being the slower one taking his time…

Meanwhile, in Robotropolis, Robotnik was observing the same map - though generally more detailed than Rotor's - which presented the same green dot moving away from his city. The evil dictator started to laugh as he sees his most hated enemy leave towards Knothole Village.

Snively: "Doctor Robotnik. Explain to me again what your plan is? Why set that hedgehog free and not roboticize her?"

Robotnik: "Silence, you dolt. The plan is very simple… Operation: TROJANHORSE. Those foolish Freedom Fighters think they could bring cameras into my city without my noticing? Hmph. Truly, they underestimate me. While Sonic was out cold, the Swatbots alerted me of a foreign object within the rodent's shoe. A camera which had an unfamiliar radar signal. While I can't detect the exact coordinates of the radar signal, I decided on the next best thing… Use Sonic as a tracker to find Knothole Village!"

Snively: "An interesting plan, sir. But how will we know if the rodent makes it to Knothole Village?"

Robotnik only smiles as he turns on the camera feed, seeing what Rotor saw.

Robotnik: "Grab some popcorn, Snively. And prepare the Demolition Army to march into the Great Forest. Once Knothole is torn down, the Great Forest will follow! And no one will stop us!"

Robotnik lets out an evil laugh, letting his voice echo throughout the city as Snively just watches, unsure of this plan fully.

Sonic runs through the fields leaving Robotropolis, keeping a steady pace as she took a moment to think over "Kintobor's" plan.

Sonic's Thoughts: "According to Kintobor, the Freedom Fighters are said to live around the Great Forest. He wants me to go in, destroy their base of operations, and be home by dinner…"

She suddenly stops, screeching to a halt as that phrase sounded familiar to her.

Sonic's Thoughts: "'Be home by dinner'... Where have I heard that phrase?"

Her thoughts get interrupted by her name being called. She looks ahead as she sees the Freedom Fighters run up to her. But they didn't seem hostile; in fact, they seemed really glad to see her.

Sally: "Sonic! There you are! Where have you been?"

Sonic stayed quiet, looking on guard as she looked at her former friends. They all stopped, noticing Sonic's stance change to one they were all too familiar with.

Sally: "Uh… Sonic? Are you quite alright?"

Robotnik and Snively watch on from the camera, seeing the Freedom Fighters having just stopped Sonic before she even could enter the Great Forest. Snively gives a look to his boss, curious as to how he would respond to this inconvenience.

Robotnik: "Oh get rid of that smug look, you twit. We can't risk Sonic regaining her memory before the Demolition Army can pinpoint the exact location of Knothole Village."

Robotnik then picks up a table microphone and turns on communications.

Robotnik: "Sonic!"

Sonic: "Huh?"

Sonic hears the voice of "Kintobor" in her head, but before she could look around for him, he speaks up again.

Robotnik: "Don't be scared, my girl. I put a communicator in your ear just for such an occasion. And don't react too much; let's just say I see what you see. These are the Freedom Fighters I spoke about. Deal with them, but don't listen to their lies. They may appear to be friendly, but they are anything but."

Sonic looked back at Sally and the other Freedom Fighters. Though it was still cloudy, their faces did look very familiar to the hedgehog.

Sally: "Sonic? Is something the matter?"

As Sally approached her friend, Sonic very quickly and very suddenly used a low sweep to trip up Sally, knocking her to the ground, much to the shock of everyone.

Sally: "Whu!?"

Sonic: "Nothing's the matter. Just here to put an end to you Freedom Fighters!"

Sonic then kicked Sally away, causing her to hit the ground hard. Everyone looked at Sally before they looked at Sonic.

Tails: "Wh-What do we do?"

Bunnie: "Ain't it clear, Tails? Sonic's gone and turned on us!"

Bunnie is the first to act, charging in to attack Sonic; she extends a fist towards her, which the hedgehog jumps over, then quickly runs on to jump over Bunnie, landing just behind her.

Sonic: "Sorry, but I called that attack coming a mile away!"

Sonic used a Spin Dash to knock Bunnie forwards. Tails, though not wanting to, rushes in to provide support for Bunnie, using his own Spin Dash and knocking the hedgehog off her feet.

Sonic: "Whoa! That's a pretty fancy move! Where'd you learn it, tiger!?"

Sonic's Thoughts: "Actually… Where'd I learn my own…?"

Tails: "I… I learned from the best! You!"

Tails says before flying in to try and land some punches on Sonic, but the hedgehog sees through this attempt and quickly retaliates, sliding under the fox. She then grabs his tails and jumped, spinning as she held a firm grasp on her opponent before slamming him to the ground.

Sonic: "Sorry, kid. But you're still two million years too soon to be on my level."

Rotor runs over to help the princess with Antoine, Sally scratching her head after that hit left her dazed.

Sally: "Ugh… Thanks, guys… Something is definitely wrong with Sonic."

Antoine: "You are telling me… She has gone crazy!"

Sally: "Crazy or not, we need to beat her and see what's going on. Freedom Fighters! All out attack!"

Bunnie gets up at that command, jumping into the air as she starts launching more extended fists at Sonic; the hedgehog attempts to dodge the attacks, but is held down by Tails.

Tails: "Sorry, Sonic!"

Sonic: "Huh?"

Sonic is struck in the face by the metal fist, leaving a nasty mark on her face as Bunnie retracts her fist. Bunnie goes for another extended punch, but Sonic glares at her before jumping with Tails still holding onto her.

Sonic: "Special… DELIVERY!"

Sonic kicks her leg forward, flinging Tails right at Bunnie, causing him to hit the rabbot in the face and dazing her. Sonic once again runs up Bunnie's arm, but once she reaches the end, Sonic using her Spin Jump to slice off Bunnie's cybernetic arm, completely disconnecting it.

Bunnie: "M-Mah arm!"

Sonic then quickly slams a drop kick onto both Bunnie and Tails, knocking them both to the ground and out of commission. Sally runs in and slams a kick to Sonic's head, knocking her aside.

Sally: "Sonic. Don't make me fight you. What's going on?"

Sonic: "I don't plan on answering that. Especially not to you."

Sonic goes in to attack, charging up a Spin Dash, only to get hit by a laser blast on the ground next to her, the force of the explosion causing her to fly back. Rotor is seen holding a small ray gun, gulping as he hoped that he didn't accidentally kill Sonic.

Rotor: "This thing is still in beta testing… I hope that didn't just finish Sonic off…"

Sonic: "Nah big guy… I'm still here!"

Sonic rushes at Rotor, slamming into his stomach with enough force to knock him into a tree and onto the ground. Sally growls as she pulls out her slingshot, but Sonic quickly grabs her and slams her to the ground, easily taking her out.

Sonic: "Boy, you guys aren't very strong. How is it that Kintobor never beat you guys?"

Antoine: "Zat eez quite enough out of you, ruffian!"

Sonic turns and quickly ducks under a sword swing coming from Antoine, who rolls forward to land on his feet as he turns to his foe.

Antoine: "After everything, you decide to turn on zee princess and your friends, Sonic!"

Sonic: "You'll have to forgive me if I say that I have no idea what you're on about."

Sonic rushes in to strike Antoine, but the coyote manages to just barely dodge. Under normal circumstances, Antoine wouldn't be this brave. But he was angry at feeling betrayed, so the fear of fighting a much stronger foe was subsided.

Antoine: "Are you saying zat night… when you tried to comfort me… Was zat all an act zen!?"

Sonic: "That night…"

A quick flash came before Sonic's eyes. She remembered this coyote… It was the middle of the night and… She remembered she tried to encourage Antoine.

Sonic: "...You were talking about your dad and…"

Antoine: "So why betray us!?"

Sonic began to stand up straight, her widening eyes showing some clarity. Then it shifted to pure anger.

Sonic: "I would never…"

Before Antoine could inquire anymore, Sonic bursted off towards Robotropolis once again, leaving a hard wave of wind in her wake.

Within the citadel, Robotnik watches as Sonic pauses seemingly, unsure of what exactly was happening, much to Snively's concern.

Snively: "S-Sir… Why is Sonic not finishing off the Freedom Fighters?"

Robotnik: "I'm not sure. The camera feed is working. Why did she stop?"

Sonic: "Why don't you ask her yourself!?"

Once Robotnik heard that, he turns to find Sonic having burst through his security. In record time no less. One look into Sonic's eyes told him all he needed to know…

Robotnik: "Drat… It seems you've regained your memories, hedgehog. Perhaps sending some of my Swatbots out to finish off your friends would have been better after all."

Sonic: "Cut the gibberish, Robotnik. I'm ending this back and forth right now!"

Robotnik: "Perhaps another time, you flea bitten fur ball. You may have regained your memories, but you forget… I always have an escape plan!"

Robotnik says as he presses a button on his chair, causing him to descend to safety with Snively falling in with a 'yelp' just before Sonic could rush at him.

Sonic: "Tch… Figures…"

But Sonic wasn't leaving without dealing with her mission first. She presses a few random buttons on the console until one activates a self destruction timer. It wasn't for the citadel, but it was for the Demolition Army, which was fine by her. Once she left the city, an explosion went off, signifying her mission was complete.

Later that night, in Knothole Village, Sonic could be seen on her porch, leaning against the railing as she looked towards the ground. She had a pretty somber look on her face, which did catch the attention of one certain coyote.

Antoine: "Madam. You know eet eez curfew, right? Why are you still up?"

Antoine wasn't really joking around, still looking quite angry about today. But the response he got wasn't what he expected.

Sonic: "...Sorry."

When Sonic turned to head back inside, Antoine calls out to her, approaching her hut.

Antoine: "Hold on, Sonic. Are you… still torn up about earlier?"

Sonic: "...Wouldn't you? You said it yourself… I betrayed the Freedom Fighters. I hurt all of you, without holding back. Tails gave me an earful before slamming the door to his room in my face… Sally and Rotor understood, at least, but considering the state I left Bunnie in, I'd be shocked if she could even forgive me… And then there's you… You had every right to be angry with me."

Antoine: "Stop. Sonic… You had zee amnesia. You didn't know zee friend from zee foe. If anyzing… I acted out of line… You wouldn't willingly betray zee Freedom Fighters…"

The two looked at each other for a moment, both sharing at that feeling of guilt - Sonic over her actions, and Antoine over believing Sonic to be anything less than a hero. But when they realized that they were staring a little long, they both turned away quickly.

Antoine: "I-I should return to zee night watch. Um… You have a good night…"

As Antoine walks away to continue his night watch…

Sonic: "...Thanks, Antoine. I needed that…"

He then hears Sonic open her door to go inside. Antoine paused, taking a deep breath as continued on his way. He made a promise to himself… To believe in Sonic much more rather than assume the worst of her… That is a mistake he will never make again…
