Tears pricked her eyes as Lily laid on the bed, her body curled into itself. She was mindful of her burns, but she couldn't help herself. She knew when she came back, she'd be seeing everyone. Ben. Alicia. Johnny.
Johnny.
A sob escaped from her, and she clapped her good hand over her mouth. She didn't want anyone to hear her. Hearing his voice was one thing but seeing him was another. When she had seen him just moments before, anger and sadness rose simultaneously. It had been so long since she last had that dreaded conversation.
I don't think this is working out.
I met someone.
Don't bother calling me.
His words had confused her then and still confused her now. After the call, she distanced herself. Snapped at Ben. Ignored him. Ignored Reed and Sue. Hidden herself away in the apartment. Tore down everything that reminded her of the blond man. She doubted everything she felt for him.
She knew she had been too young for him but when she landed in London, she grew up. She matured and became independent without fear. With that one conversation, he tore all that away and she forgot. She forgot who she was. The sound of knocking interrupted her thoughts.
Lily stifled her sobs quickly and sat up. She wiped the tear stains away from her cheek and scooted back to the headboard.
"Lily?"
Sue's voice floated through the door, and she sighed. For a moment she had been terrified it was Johnny. Not that she was afraid of him, but more so that maybe he'd come to her to talk. She wasn't ready for that-not by a long shot. She got up from the bed and went over to the door. The door clicked open, and she peered through the opening.
Sue gave her a smile and gestured towards the tray she held in her hands. "I made your sandwich."
Lily stuck her hand out and grabbed the tray. As she pulled it towards her, there was resistance and she looked up. Sue's eyes met hers.
"If you want to talk, I'm here."
Lily bristled. "If you stop looking at me with pity, then I'll talk to you." She pulled the tray towards the door, phasing it through and then shut the door in Sue's face. Once the door clicked shut and locked, she drew in a breath. She hadn't meant to snap at Sue like that. But to see the pity in the older woman's eyes grated at her.
She knew she had a lot going on from the issue of the abandonment of Johnny to the incident of the fire. She looked down at the tray. Her appetite was gone suddenly and took the tray to set it on top of a dresser. Then flicked the light off and crawled into bed.
Sue let out a little gasp as tears brimmed her eyes. What Lily had said hurt but she also couldn't hold it against her. She knew the girl had gone through a lot; so much more than she knew. She took in a deep breath then let it out as she rubbed her large stomach. Then turned in search for her husband. Moments later, she found Reed in his usual hideout-the Lab. She spotted him sitting at his desk and as her footsteps echoed, Reed lifted his head and turned.
He had smiled when he recognized the footsteps behind him but the moment he spotted her and the unshed tears, he frowned. He lifted his arm out towards her, and she grabbed his hand. He led her to his lap as he turned the chair around.
"What's wrong, love?" Reed asked as he rubbed her back.
"Lily." Sue replied.
It seemed as if that's all he needed to hear and he sighed. "What happened?"
Sue shook her head. "It's not a big deal. I made her a sandwich and offered to talk if she wanted. But she was a little rude about it. But I'm not going to hold it against her. She's been through a lot."
He rubbed his face as he let out another sigh then settled it into his palm. "I know she's been through a lot but that shouldn't give her the right to be rude to you."
"Reed…"
"No. You're my wife. You're carrying my child. No one should be rude to you. I'll talk to her. Maybe she'll be more receptive to me than you." Reed said.
"Maybe." She said then yawned. "I probably should take a nap; it's been a long few days."
Reed nodded then helped her up. He held her hand as he led her out of the lab and into the direction of the rooms. They paused outside Lily's door. They kissed and Sue walked away to their room. Once Reed could no longer see her, he turned his head to the door in front of him. He raised his hand to knock then paused.
Was he really sure she'd talk to him? Would she want to see him? He knew from the recent events that she was opening up to him in a way, talking to him. He wouldn't know unless he tried, he thought. And with that he knocked on the door.
Immediately a voice replied, annoyed. "Go away Sue!"
"It's Reed."
Silence at first but then he heard her voice. "Go away." It wasn't as strong and loud as it was before, but meek and small. Right then, he knew he made the right choice to knock. And even more so to try to open the door. But it was locked. He looked down and let his hand fall, stretching towards the gap under the door.
He had to do this, or they'd lose her before they ever had her back.
The hand stretched under the door and upwards towards the lock. The subtle click and he opened it from the inside. The arm snapped back into place as he opened the door. He stepped through as darkness greeted him. He shut the door behind him. He squinted through the darkness and could barely see a lump on the bed.
"Lily?" He whispered into the room.
"I told you to go away." She replied from the bed, her muffled voice coming from the lump.
He followed the voice, rounding around the bed until he reached the head of it. Then kneeled down to where he assumed her head was. "Sue told me you were a little rude to her."
She sighed. "I didn't mean it." She abruptly flipped the blanket off her head. "She just…I don't know. I'm sorry."
He reached up and flicked the bedside lamp on. Lily came into view, wincing from the bright light. Her eyes rimmed a deep red. He got up from his knees then sat on the bed, Lily shuffling away from him under the blankets.
"Lils…what happened?" He asked her softly, his hand reaching to find hers and squeeze.
Tears spilled over quickly at his question, heavy sobs erupting from deep in her chest. He was startled at the reaction but wrapped his arms around her, pulling her to him to hold in a comforting embrace. Her body shook from the sobs. Her voice shuddered through the tears.
"Ev-everything happened."
