A week or two later, and it was the day before Christmas Break.
And that's when I got a letter.
For a split second, I thought it was another letter from Shari, but when I took in the bird, the colour drained from my face.
"Leo?" Elaine asked, having obviously noticed the change from her position on the pillow pile in the middle of the boys dormitory, and the others turned to look at me as well.
"What's wrong?" Lily inquired, rolling off her back and onto her knees.
"That's my mother's owl." The owl, much like my mother, was a beacon of bright light, a little two bright. It was starchly white, with two, big black eyes peeking out from above it's sharply angled beak.
"Are you sure she's not an animagus?" Sirius asked, his tone somewhat weak as he looked it over, and I shrugged.
"I'm definitely hoping." I murmured, crossing the few feet from my bed to the nearest window and carefully, cautiously, untied the little half rolled letter from the bird's scaly little leg.
As I flattened the letter out, I flipped it, and my eyes fell on the the swamp green wax seal on the back of the letter, and the Joannis family insignia.
A 'J' in the middle, with an Axe in one side tilted over it, and a wand on the other, meeting it in the center of the stamp just above the 'J'.
That little sign shot fear straight through my veins.
"What does the bitch want?" Peter squeaked, and I couldn't blame him for sounding, or being, afraid, because well, so was I.
Gingerly, I pried the parchment free of the seal, and unfolded the little letter.
Leonides Judas Ellwood,
Christmas Eve ball.
Pick you up at five thirty p.m. on the dot.
Be prepared.

I raised an eyebrow, and turned to look at the others.
"It seems I have a gala to attend."

6/1/23 - Since I added the explanation of the Meliflua family crest to Chapter 29, I thought I'd explain the Joannis family crest here. When looking up the symbolism of common elements from coat of arms, I found that the axe represents military service, strength and duty. The meaning of a wand was trickier to find, because it's probably something that would be a lot more common in the Harry Potter universe where people use wands every day, but I did find a website that basically explained the symbolism of the wand in tarot cards, so I went off of that. It said the wand was a symbol of power, energy, will, control and wisdom. It also said that the wand denotes traditionally masculine qualities, which I thought was funny since Cipicia is the one we see using it.
