I've made a mother's day chapter~! I remembered having written down this idea 2 days before mother's day! So I kinda had to rush to get this done on time, but I got it done.
And since it just turned midnight here and mother's day is officially here this is the perfect time to post it~!
It was a Thursday afternoon when the Warner siblings met up with Ari and some other friends in the nearby park. They just got back from school, which the Warners didn't go to, so this was one of the only times they saw each other. This time they were playing hide-and-seek. So far only Yakko, Wakko, Dot and Ari were found, and inwardly grumbling about now being allowed to use toon-physics for this game.
"Found you, Terry!" Ah, another one to join their little group.
Terry was one of the two humans who joined this game, hence the "No toon abilities"- rule. He sat down in the 'found box', which was just a square drawn in the dirt, and waited for the others to be found. They started talking about whatever.
"Hey Ari, does your school do something for mother's day?" Terry asked the lioness cub. "We're gonna make picture frames."
Ari perked up. "Oh! Oh! Yeah! My class is gonna make make-up boxes. But mama doesn't wear make-up, so it's probably gonna be something else."
Terry turned to the Warners. "How about you guys?"
"We -eehh… We don't go to school?" Yakko told him. Not too surprising he didn't know. He only started hanging out with the friend group recently. "Also, what's mother's day?"
Ari tilted her head. "You don't know? It's a day for mamas." she told them. "You give your mama presents, and hugs and kisses, and do fun stuff that they want to do!"
Now that's something. A day specially for moms? The siblings looked at each other, each thinking the same question. 'Should we do this for Kassie?'
"How did you not know that?" Terry asked them not unkindly.
The trio shrugged. "We've never had a mom before." Wakko replied. "Not before Kassie."
"Oh. S-sorry." Luckily the awkward silence afterwards didn't last long. Before long more joined the found box and started talking about what they were gonna do for their moms. When everyone was found another round began. Soon though everyone had to leave, including the Warners.
When the siblings got home they found Andy in the kitchen, Kassie nowhere in sight. Well, this was the perfect moment to ask then, right? Maybe they could celebrate this 'mother's day' too, now that they had one.
Andy nearly dropped his cup of tea when he heard his kids' question. Celebrating mother's day? He hadn't even realized it was close to that date already! It would be a first time for all of them…
He shook his head. No bad thoughts! Think positive. This could be just what Kass needed on this day!
"Of course we can celebrate it." he told the kids. "But we have to keep it a secret for your mom, okay?" The siblings eagerly nodded.
So they made plans and preparations for that Sunday. Presents were both bought and made, then wrapped and hidden and breakfast duties were assigned which Andy would supervise of course.
Then the day came.
Andy's alarm went off, which he quickly silenced. One look at his partner and he knew she knew the date. He kissed her on the cheek and left the room without a word. Talking to her was useless when she's like this.
The dog went to wake up his kids, reminding them to be quiet as to surprise Kassie. They quietly went downstairs and got to work. Yakko was in charge of the cheese stuffed omelet, Wakko prepared the batter for the waffles and Dot would get the fruit salad ready. Andy helped where he could, as well as pouring some milk for his girlfriend and making his kids' breakfast.
Pretty soon breakfast was set up on the kitchen table. They even got a small vase with a single pink carnation, Kassie's favorite flower. Now all that was left was to get Kassie. The kids volunteered to do it, but Andy had it covered and told them to just eat their breakfast.
After all… He opened the door to the bedroom and walked towards Kassie's side of the bed. She was on her side, staring at the wall with a dead-eyed stare. Andy sighed. After all, the kids shouldn't have to see their mom like this.
"Kassie? Darling?" She didn't respond, as expected. Andy placed a hand on her cheek, stroking it softly. "Love, I know today is hard. Trust me, I know." He felt a pang in his heart. "But the kids have a surprise for you downstairs." Besides a small twitch, she didn't respond. "Come on, dear. Can you try? For them."
There was no response for a minute, but then she uttered a small 'Okay' and sluggishly got up. They went downstairs and at the kitchen entrance were met with party poppers and streamers.
"Surprise!" The Warners shouted. "Happy mother's day!" They ran over and nearly tackled Kassie into a hug.
Kassie slowly returned the hug as she took in the kitchen table. Her favorite breakfast items, as well as her favorite flower were on the table. And guessing from the mess on the counter, she'd say her kittens were the ones making it.
A weak smile appeared as she scratched her babies heads. "Thank you, kittens."
"We've got more." Yakko said. He and his sibs let go of their mom and pushed her to her seat. "Just sit here, enjoy your breakfast and we'll be right back!"
They zoomed off to where they'd hidden their gifts. They pulled five wrapped gifts out of the closet, one handmade from each of them and two that were their shared presents. They raced back to the kitchen as carefully as they could and presented their mother with the gifts.
Kassie put down her half-eaten breakfast and reached for the first one, the one Wakko held out to her. It was a white mug with the words "World's best Mom" painted on it in brown, blue and pink. Next was Dot's, which turned out to be a photo album with a self painted cover. Many flowers covered it, as well as glitter and in the middle was written "Our Family". All the photos taken up until that point were already in it. And many more were to be added.
Last of the handmade gifts was Yakko's. His was a self painted picture frame with different things glued to it, like buttons, lint and paper mallets as well as a cartoony dog and cat face. There was already a photo in it. The first photo of all of them together, taken on Christmas posing in front of the tree.
Kassie smiled and pulled the trio into a hug, thanking them for their wonderful gifts. Lastly was a set of gifts that was Andy's idea. It was two books. One was, according to friends, a genuinely good book and the other, according to those same friends, was outright terrible. Kassie would have fun ripping apart all the plot holes and nonsense.
After breakfast, Kassie was pulled to the backyard and was met with garden beds that hadn't been there previously. She'd always planned to make something of her backyard, but between job hunting, she just never had the time for it. But now, as Andy pulled out several trays of flowers to be planted, it seems like now is the time.
After getting dressed into something that was not her pajamas, and after the dishes were done, the family spend a good chunk of the morning planting flowers in the two garden beds. The two adults both had their own garden bed, since Andy kept refusing Kassie's help, stating it wold be a surprise, but the kids went back and forth between the two. It was honestly a messy mishmash of flowers, but they did it together so it was beautiful enough.
When afternoon hit, Andy called for the kids to clean up and get ready for their outing. While the pups were doing that, Andy showed Kassie what he'd been working on. What she saw left Kassie in tears. In the middle of the flower bed was a little angel statue, surrounded by blue irises, pink carnations and daisies, with a few gardenias here and there. Andy's favorite flower and Kassie's favorite flower were expected, those were not to be left out, but the daisies… Those were his flowers. Their baby's concept art flowers.
Wakko chose the exact moment Kassie broke down in tears to peek around the door opening. "It's not fair…" Wakko heard her sob. "It's not fair, Andy. He should be here with us!"
Something told him he wasn't supposed to see this. He went back inside and waited with his siblings in the living room. Then his brother asked him if mom and dad were coming yet. Right, he'd gone to ask them that. Luckily he was spared an answer when the two got inside and went to clean up themselves.
When Kassie came back downstairs, Wakko practically jumped in her arms to hug her and purr. Purring makes everyone feel better, right? Kassie didn't see it as anything strange. Just her cuddlebug-kitten being his cuddly self.
Their day at the aquarium was very enjoyable. The Warners were in awe of the many different fish and other aquatic animals and he adults had a surprisingly calm afternoon. They expected to have to run from tank to tank to keep up with their kids, but they behaved well and could sit surprisingly still if they were interested enough in a certain kind of fish. Yakko took the task of info-dumping by reading the entirety of as many bulletin boards as he could.
All in all, I was a good day. Andy made dinner, they played a few board games, Kassie was receiving more hugs and cuddles than usual, especially from Wakko. Dot even got to show off her recently learned braiding skills on Kassie's hair, held together with a matching flower hair-tie. They played games and had fun until it was time for bed. Kassie tucked them into bed, giving each their goodnight nuzzles and kisses.
As the night fell Kassie lay in bed thinking. 'Maybe… Maybe mother's day doesn't always have to be a bad day.' She smiled weakly at her thoughts.
Yakko, Wakko and Dot laid curled up close to each other that night with big smiles on their faces. This was a good day. Hopefully there would be more mother's days, so they could do something like this again. As they drifted off just one question remained in their minds.
If there's a mother's day… Is there a father's day too?
This was meant to just be fluff when I first thought of a mother's day chapter… Now it's angsty… Oops?
So, if you hadn't guessed already (First of all SPOILER!); But yes, Andy and Kassie lost their child. I've been thinking of writing a chapter around that, but I'm not sure yet.
Reasons behind the flowers:
Blue iris: In-universe reason: It's Andy's favorite - Real reason: It's one of the flowers that seem to represent fatherly love.
Pink Carnations: In-universe reason: It's Kassie's favorite - Real reason: It's one of the flowers that seem to represent motherly love.
Daisies: In-universe reason: Frank drew Andy and Kassie's kid holding daisies in concept art - Real reason: An old Celtic legend that says whenever an infant dies, God would sprinkle daisies over the earth to cheer up the parents.
Gardenias: No in-universe reason - Real reason: Represent children and family.
