"It's ok bud. Almost done. There we go. Daddy's got you."
Patrick's whines turned to unhappy cooing and Jamie did his best to soothe them. The nurse rubbed a finger over Patrick's tiny arm.
"I know buddy. I'm sorry that wasn't fun."
Jamie looked up at the nurse seriously, but with sympathetic eyes.
"This'll clear out his system, right? That's what the saline's for?"
The nurse nodded her head.
"Yes. This is just saline. It'll clear the Aconite from his system, and you should see him start to improve."
The nurse pointed at the bag of saline hanging from the iv pole next to Patrick's bassinet. Jamie nodded and sunk into the chair once more. Eddie hadn't moved. She was adamant about staying with Patrick and seeing him through this. Jamie put a hand on her shoulder, and she moved her head from lying on her forearm.
"You should get something to eat Ed."
Shaking her head no, she placed a hand inside the heated bassinet and ran a finger over Patrick's tiny cheek.
"Not until this baby boy shows signs of getting better."
Jamie wiggled his eyebrows at Eddie and leaned down, whispering in her ear.
"You mean, you're not even hungry for a steak sandwich?"
Eddie raised her eyebrows and gave him a small smile.
"Ok, I could go for a steak sandwich. Extra peppers please."
Jamie arched an eyebrow.
"You're sure you want extra peppers Ed? You said that while you were pregnant with him."
Jamie pointed at Patrick to emphasize his point. Eddie nodded her head yes.
"I want extra peppers on my steak sandwich bub. Now go get it for me."
Jamie gave a slight chuckle and smirked.
"Wow. So, demanding."
Eddie looked up from Patrick and gave him a look.
"Shemanding? That's not what I am Reagan. Now go get me that steak sandwich."
Jamie continued smirking and pulled Eddie in for a kiss. Pulling apart, he placed his forehead against hers.
"I love you babe."
Eddie ran a hand over his left cheek.
"I love you too bub, but you really need to shave! Your five o-clock shadow has a five-o-clock shadow!"
Jamie had been sporting more facial hair recently and Eddie didn't like it. She wasn't afraid to voice how she felt about it either.
"What about it Ed? You don't like this new look?"
Eddie made a face and shook her head, then running a finger along Patrick's cheek with her index finger once more.
"Nope. Bub, Patrick came into the world and into the arms of a man who is his father, who I recall was clean shaven at that point. Yes, I was unconscious at the time of his birth, but you were completely awake, and you were clean shaven. Let's keep it that way bub."
Jamie pretended to be hurt by Eddie's comments.
"Ouch Ed. That cut deep."
Eddie pointed a finger at Jamie. Before leaving the room, he quickly and carefully leaned into the heated bassinet and brushed a kiss to Patrick's forehead.
"I love you bud. Daddy will be right back. He's going to get mommy something to eat. Hopefully we can get you to eat something too."
Jamie nodded and kept an eye on Eddie and Patrick as he opened up the door. Two uniformed officers were standing just outside.
"Keep an eye on them. Anyone entering this room needs to show some id. Any nurse coming in with a cart, check for guns with silencers on them. Any injection Patrick is to be given I want one of us in the room to watch carefully. Make sure any labels on injections, solution bags are exactly what they say they are."
Jamie felt like he'd been promoted, even though he was still a patrol officer. But this was his son he was talking about here. His safety was very important to him.
"Don't worry Reagan. We'll keep your boy safe."
Jamie could see sincerity in the other officer's eyes. Nodding he let out a breath. He left the pair of officers outside Patrick's room and left the pediatric floor. He made his way outside the hospital and three blocks away to a diner him and Eddie used to frequent while they were patrol partners. Entering, he smiled at a man behind the counter.
"Hey Mike. Can I get a steak sandwich with extra peppers and a Cobb salad. Hold the olives."
Mike nodded his head and went back into the kitchen and began making Jamie's order. He made small talk with him while he prepared everything.
"Congratulations by the way Jamie. Boy or a girl?"
Jamie smiled and took out his phone, pulling up a photo of Eddie and Patrick. He was glad the photo he had of Eddie; her bruises had faded on her face.
"It's a boy."
Mike chuckled and finished preparing Eddie's steak sandwich.
"He looks just like you Jamie. I think I see a little bit of Eddie in there too."
Jamie gave a bright smile and put his phone back in his pocket. Mike had finished preparing both his and Eddie's orders and placed them in a plastic bag.
"Thanks Mike. How much do I owe you?"
Mike waved a hand at Jamie.
"It's on the house Jamie."
Jamie took his wallet out and put a hand up.
"I can't do that Mike. Now how much do I owe you?"
Mike sighed and pulled off his gloves, punching in the total for both meals.
"$14.50. Do you want to add any drinks?"
Jamie shook his head.
"Just the sandwich and the salad this time Mike. Thanks. I'll let Eddie know you said hi and congratulations. See you around."
Jamie waved at Mike and left the diner with the bag of food in his left hand. Things may be starting to look up. But for now, Jamie had to stay on his toes.
"You're doing great Marla. One more push and your baby will be here."
Doctor Carla Watson kept urging the governor's wife, Marla Stanson. She was tired but kept at it.
"Just get him out!"
Doctor Watson shook her head.
"I've got a shoulder! One more push for me! That's it! Good girl!"
Marla let out a cry and plopped her head against the pillow and looked at the screaming little boy being held over the sheet covering her.
"He's so handsome! Can I see him?"
Doctor Watson frowned for a moment and then handed him off to the nurse next to her and she cut the umbilical cord.
"In a minute, I just want to get his length and his weight and then he can bond with you having his first meal."
Marla nodded and winced as Doctor Watson finished up down by her feet.
"That really hurts…"
Doctor Watson nodded and took her blood-soaked gloves off and pulled the sheet back over Marla's legs.
"Shh. I'll get you something for the pain and let you sleep."
Marla nodded and leaned her head back against the pillow behind her head.
"After I take a nap, can I see Cayden?"
Doctor Watson nodded and patted her hand.
"Of course. You two can get to know one another. Shh. Just rest now."
Marla furrowed her eyebrows in confusion as she started to feel strange.
"I feel weird… My head… The pain is gone… But my head feels weird…"
Doctor Watson nodded one more time and squeezed her hand.
"Shh. It's ok. That's just the pain medication settling in. Close your eyes and have some rest."
Marla nodded and closed her eyes. Doctor Watson watched the monitor Marla was attached to and the lines quit going up and down monitoring her heart rate. They were completely flat, and it gave out a steady tone.
Meanwhile, outside the room, the nurse handed the little boy swaddled comfortably in a receiving blanket to Marian Wintlock, who took the little boy with a large smile on her face.
"The mother won't be any trouble?"
The nurse shook her head.
"No. She just had a heart attack no one will be none the wiser."
Wintlock only nodded her head and exited the shuttered hospital. Outside the old employee entrance was the man with the black hoodie. She gently handed the sleeping little boy to him. In return he handed her a thick envelope with money.
"Here's $2 million. Shall we celebrate with some drinks or blow it on a vacation?"
Wintlock smirked and ran a hand down his left arm.
"I'll think about it Greg. Be safe. Take care in deliver this little charge to his new family. We'll talk later."
Little did the man in the black hoodie know, part of his face was seen by a pole camera a block away and loading the little boy into a dark sedan.
