"Where to?"

Doctor Matthews lowered her voice as she and Jamie walked out the back entrance to the house, where a large rental box truck was waiting.

"Here. All of the medical supplies and equipment we need."

Some of Rolanil's men opened up the rolling door to the box truck and on pallets were the medical equipment from the list Jamie provided to Rolanil.

"Let's get these inside."

Jamie looked around in the rather large courtyard, looking for weak spot in the bushes or maybe the fencing, but it wasn't obvious in the dark. Maybe he could figure out how to get back out here during the daylight hours. Doctor Matthews motioned for Rolanil's guards to bring the equipment into the house.

"I want the vacuum extractor, the defibrillators one in each room if possible. I want the vacuum extractor either with me or Doctor Stevenson. The supplies the two of us will put in each room."

Jamie followed Doctor Matthew's lead and helped her organize and put things away. He still wasn't sure what some of the instruments were for. As they were putting instruments in the last room, they were both alone and he decided to ask his question.

"What exactly are these for?"

Doctor Matthews answered in understanding.

"Those are retractors. We use them during a C-section. Which if we have to perform one, I don't know where we'd do it. This place isn't sterile for it and it's very messy."

Nodding, Jamie let his eyes wander over the other instruments in the drawer. The room they were in currently didn't have an expectant mother in it. In the last three weeks he and Doctor Matthews had delivered a total of 6 babies. After the mothers gave birth, they would disappear. Rolanil wouldn't give any details as to what happened to them either. The babies too. Jamie didn't know what to believe anymore. He now worried for Eddie's safety each day that got closer to her due date. As he and Doctor Matthews exited the empty birth suite, they found three of Rolanil's guards struggling to hold up one of the pregnant women clearly in distress.

"A little help here doc! She's heavy!"

It took the three guards, Jamie and Doctor Matthews to get the ailing woman back into the room and into bed. The guards left and locked the door. A couple of nurses must've entered the room and they were going here and there organizing supplies and various trays. Jamie and Doctor Matthews had kind of developed a tag team approach when they had a difficult delivery. One of them would stay with the patient while the other went to wash up. Just as Jamie finished washing up and was about to help Doctor Matthews, there was a sharp knock on the door and Jamie went towards it. It unlocked and opened slightly.

"Doc, Missy needs you next door."

Jamie cast a glanced at Doctor Matthews. She nodded at him.

"Go Doctor Stevenson. I'll be there as soon as I can to assist you."

Jamie felt his hair begin to rise on the back of his neck, but he had to remain professional and make it look like he knew what he was doing. Letting out a breath, the guard lead him next door and opened up the door. Entering, Jamie gave a sincere smile to Missy and the guard closed the door. Another set of nurses were in this room. One of the nurses looked at Jamie.

"I'm sterile. I washed up in the other room. I haven't touched doorknobs or anything."

The nurse seemed satisfied with Jamie's answer and helped put a mask and gloves on. The second nurse pushed a stool towards him, and he caught it with his foot setting himself on it. He could see the fear and worry on Missy's face and he did his best to reassure her.

"Everything's going to be just fine Missy. Girl or boy, I will make sure they come into the world healthy and safely."

Missy nodded but her nervousness was very apparent.

"I'm scared."

Jamie nodded and gave her another sincere smile behind his mask.

"I know, and its ok to be scared. It's your first baby. My wife is here too. We're also having our first baby. It's really the unknown that's scary."

This seemed to soothe and alleviate some of Missy's worries.

"Do you know what you're having?"

Jamie shook his head no.

"No. We wanted it to be a surprise. Missy, do I have your permission to check your progress?"

Missy nodded and scooted to the end of the bed while both nurses helped put her feet up.

"Yes."

Jamie nodded and pushed the sheet back slightly. He took a silent breath in and let it out slowly. He hoped he was doing this right.

"Ok Missy, deep breath in for me. That's it."

He looked up for a moment over the sheet when he heard Missy whimper.

"I know. I'm sorry that's uncomfortable. It's ok. Almost done. I feel the head. Ok Missy. Your there. I want you to give me a great big push. Not too hard though ok?"

Missy vigorously nodded her head and grit her teeth, putting her chin to her chest. Swallowing once more, Jamie nodded his head and kept encouraging her.

"You're doing really good Missy. Keep going. One more push and the head will be out. One more I promise. One more big push. That's it. Ok, heads out, here come the shoulders. One more really big push for me. Good. It's a boy! You have a beautiful baby boy!"

Missy let her head fall back against her pillow and she let out a sob. Jamie frowned behind his mask and looked at the baby in his arms. Grabbing for a bulb syringe, he began cleaning out his nose and mouth. He spoke to him, hoping it would rouse movement.

"Come on buddy. Give me a good cry. Come on."

It took thirty seconds or so before Jamie began to see movement out of the little boy and then he belted out the biggest scream he'd ever heard.

"Good boy! What's his name Missy?"

One of the nameless nurses cut the umbilical cord and placed the screaming little boy onto Missy's chest. She placed a hand over his tiny body, and he seemed to calm. She smiled down at him and then placed a kiss to his tiny head. She then looked up at Jamie with tears in her eyes.

"Toby, I'd like you to meet the nice doctor that brought you into the world. Say hi to Doctor Stevenson."

Jamie knew he had to get these women out of here. These mothers didn't deserve to be separated from their children. They were family. He went through the motions of weighing Toby and taking measurements like her had the last 6 babies he'd helped bring into the world. Doctor Matthews entered the room and sat down on the stool at the foot of the bed. As Jamie was wrapping Toby up in a receiving blanket, he listened as Doctor Matthews spoke.

"Sounds like a good strong boy you've got here Missy. Doctor Stevenson were there any complications?"

Jamie put his professional mask back on.

"Toby wasn't breathing when he came out. I bulb suctioned out his nose and mouth. Took about 30 seconds before I saw movement, then he started screaming. There's still a little bit of active bleeding."

Doctor Matthews nodded and added her two cents.

"I'll give her some Pitocin. Good work doctor."

Jamie nodded and headed for the bathroom to wash his hands. He scrubbed all the way up to his elbows and reached for the towel to dry them off. Exiting the bathroom and going towards the bedroom door, he heard voice just outside. Opening up the door, he saw two of the guards arguing with one another in hushed tones.

"That woman downstairs needs help. We have doctors up here that can help. I didn't sign up for locking up the mothers down below."

Jamie furrowed his eyebrows and cleared his throat.

"Is something wrong gentlemen? Does someone need help?"

The guard to the right of Jamie had an apprehensive look on his face.

"Yes Doctor Stevenson. But you'll have to have this over your head. Sorry."

Jamie suddenly had a black hood thrown over his head and he found himself being led somewhere with a bunch of stairs. The three of them weren't going up. They were going down. When they got to the bottom, it was cooler and the air smelled damp. Jamie wrinkled his nose. It smelled old. They came to a locked door. Since Jamie couldn't see, he had to rely on his other senses to try and figure out where he was. He heard a door lock click and a door being opened. The two guards led him inside and closed the door behind them. Pulling the hood off his head, it took him a minute for his eyes to adjust. When they did adjust, he saw a woman lying in a bed about 20 feet or so away from him, covered in sweat. Her breathing was labored. He recognized her. There was also a roaring fire behind her to keep her warm.

"Doctor Stevenson? Are you here to help me?"

Jamie tried to wrack his brain to figure out who she was. Then it clicked.

"Sienna."

Nodding Sienna looked at Jamie with pleading eyes.

"I don't feel so good."

Jamie had almost forgotten the stethoscope behind his neck. Taking it and putting the earpieces in his ears, he placed the bell up to her chest and listened. Taking the stethoscope away and placed his back behind his neck, he looked to the two guards who stood over by the door.

"She's got an infection. Sepsis. She needs antibiotics to clear it up."

He was only repeating the words Doctor Matthews had explained to him. She had explained what Sepsis was and how bad it could get if untreated. One of the guards nodded.

"Fine, whatever you need doc."

Jamie put a hand up and tried to reason with the other guard.

"What happened to her daughter? Marleigh."

The guard had a no nonsense look on his face.

"That's a need-to-know basis doc. You most certainly are not on a need-to-know basis doc."

Jamie had to hide his nose from flaring. He was going to find out what was happening to these babies.
