Fly Me to the Moon
(1 / 2)
When the family entered Orchid's Restaurant, which was featuring their weekly family fun night, DJ and Angie greeted the hostess by name and introduced everyone. "Hi Ms. Melissa," Angie said with a grin. "We got lots of visitors cause Grace graduated college." She turned to beam at her cousin. "That's Aunt Deb and Aunt Mary and Uncle Aaron and Joanie, and this is Nonna!" She took the great grandma's hand and squeezed. "And this is Uncle Eddie and Aunt Clara, they're Uncle Danno's mommy and daddy. We got more people visiting but they're doing the luau tonight. You know everybody else, right?"
"Welcome, I'm really happy you all decided to visit us," said Melissa, who was not only the hostess, but the daughter of the owners. She showed them to a large table in the dining room. Melissa was well acquainted with Steve, Catherine and the family. She greeted Danny and Gabby, congratulated Grace and exchanged pleasantries with Elizabeth, Joseph and Grandma Ang. "We have karaoke tonight and then a trivia game," she told the kids.
Angie's head whipped around to look at her brother. "Trivia! Mommy and Daddy are so good at trivia, right, DJ?"
"They really are," he confirmed. "It's almost scary how good they are at trivia games."
"Oh you two in a public trivia contest? This I have to see," Mary said as she took a seat next to Catherine.
Melissa took drink orders and left them to check out the menus and get settled.
Having been a little distracted by introducing everyone and the idea of the trivia game, Angie's eyes widened as soon as she spotted the karaoke setup in one corner.
"Ohhhh, Karaoke! Can we sing?" Angie squeezed Catherine's hand, her excitement bubbling up.
"Of course, baby girl, but let's order our food first. It's not starting quite yet."
"I want the cheeseburger with fries and extra pickles, please. Can I go just look at the karaoke with Aunt Deb?"
When Catherine nodded, Deb stood and offered her hand, saying, "Let's go check it out." They made their way over to the stage, where a man with a warm smile greeted them.
"Aloha Angie." He held out a hand to Deb. "I'm Luke, the owner. Angie and DJ are two of our favorite customers. We've got some karaoke going on tonight. Are you interested?"
"Deb McGarrett, Steve's aunt," she responded with a small, proud smile. "And I believe my niece is way more than a little ready for karaoke."
Angie's eyes sparkled. "I love singing, but Aunt Deb's a real singer Mr. Luke! Like she dropped albums!"
Deb chuckled. "Back when they called it releasing a record."
Luke chuckled. "Well, in that case, how about we have a special treat first? How about you and the kids lead everyone in a song when we start karaoke?"
Angie gasped, her excitement reaching new heights. "Like, for real?"
"For real," Luke confirmed.
"Pleeeeeeease, Aunt Deb? We can sing Fly Me To the Moon." She turned to Luke. "Me, DJ and Joanie all know it 'cause Aunt Deb taught us."
Deb cupped her chin. "Can't say no to that face, can I? Okay, angel, let's go tell the others." She turned back to ask Luke. "Do you have it on the play list?"
Luke nodded. "Definitely. You'll be first up."
After the family had appetizers, the three kids and Deb went over to the stage where Luke announced, "Welcome to Family Fun Night at Orchid's! We have an actual recording artist with us, so she's up first with the cutest back up singers you'll ever see. "Please welcome Deb McGarrett and Joan Reyes from Los Angeles and two of our favorite customers, DJ and Angie McGarrett."
Aunt Deb took the mic, the crowd hushed, curious to hear her. "Hi everyone. Please sing along if you're old enough to know the words," she teased and the crowd chuckled. Her voice filled the restaurant as she sang the Sinatra staple accompanied by Angie, DJ and Joan.
The applause was thunderous when they finished and Angie beamed. "That was so fun, Aunt Deb!" Joan gushed as they made their way back to their seats. "It was!" DJ added as they took tiny bows at their table and the family clapped. "Belissima!" Nonna said as Danny stood in a standing ovation with a wink at his grandmother and the kids got hugs from everyone.
After their performance, the regular karaoke session began. As the patrons enjoyed their dinners, a host of parents, kids from toddlers to teens and a few retirees all sang a vast array of songs.
When Angie wiped her mouth and placed her napkin down, she said, "Can I go up with Uncle Danno now?"
"And he can't say no," Gabby whispered to Eddie and Clara.
"Of course not," Clara responded with a wink at Grace. "Just like her Uncle Steve never says no to my granddaughter."
Danny guided Angie through the process of choosing a song to sing together. "How about Bon Jovi?" He suggested, scanning the song list with Angie.
Angie's face lit up. "Yes, please! Because we love Bon Jovi!"
With her uncle by her side, Angie took the stage, the music starting, and belted out the lyrics to Livin' on a Prayer with gusto. Reminiscent of the Springsteen cover band concert from the previous summer, her voice may not have been exactly on pitch, but her enthusiasm stole the show.
Laughter and smiles filled the room and the audience couldn't help but be charmed by her infectious energy.
Catherine watched with a soft expression, her heart swelling at her daughter's fearless spirit. She glanced at Steve, who was grinning from ear to ear, enjoying the moment just as much.
Deb, Nonna and Grandma Ang exchanged happy glances as Angie and Danny stepped off the stage.
After Danny and Angie's Livin' on a Prayer, there was a burst of applause and cheers from the audience. Angie had bounced off the stage to make her way back to the table where her family sat, beaming from ear to ear. "We did awesome, Uncle Danno!" she exclaimed, giving him a high-five.
The detective laughed and gave a thumbs up to a beaming Nonna. "We definitely did."
Joan, who had been watching from her seat, turned to Aaron with wide eyes. "Daddy, can we go up next?" she asked eagerly. Aaron chuckled softly and looked at Mary whose expression was both delighted and amused. "Sure, Pumpkin. You pick a song and we'll try." He kissed her cheek.
As they made their way to the stage, the family clapped and cheered. Aaron handed the mic to Joan, who took a deep breath before launching into a spirited rendition of Hakuna Matata. They received a round of applause as they finished, and Joan grinned up at her daddy as he took her hand.
Back at the table, DJ had an idea. He turned to his great grandmother. "Grandma Ang, do you want to sing with me? I know the perfect song for us."
Her blue eyes twinkled. "I'd love to, sweetheart. Lead the way," she said, rising from her seat and looping her arm through his offered one.
Luke flashed them a smile as they approached and placed a chair on stage just in case she wanted to sit. "Please welcome two of our favorite regular diners, DJ and Grandma Ang," he announced, gesturing to the pair. As the music for Take Me Out to the Ball Game started playing, DJ and Grandma Ang shared a quick hug and with arms around each other's waists, began to sing.
DJ's voice was clear and in tune, blending well with Grandma Ang's soft tones. Many of the other patrons sang along, caught up in the joyful feel of their performance. Angie clapped enthusiastically, her face glowing with pride for her brother and great grandmother.
Catherine and Steve exchanged a soft glance as they watched their family members take the stage. "We have a beautiful family," Aunt Deb said and shared a knowing look with Mary, who wrapped her arm across her aunt's shoulders for a hug.
After their song was over, DJ and Grandma Ang added, "Go Cubs!" and shared a laugh before making their way back to the table to be greeted by cheers and applause from their family while Angie and Joan rushed forward. "You were so amazing!" Joan exclaimed. "This is the most fun karaoke night ever in the whole world," Angie added.
With the karaoke performances coming to a close, the atmosphere in Orchid's Restaurant was quiet for a bit as the family chatted about the performances and plans for the rest of their visitors' trip. "So who wants dessert?" Nonna asked and laughed when all the hands around the table were raised. "Good! You have to keep your strength up for the trivia!"
