Steve was used to his kitchen regularly being raided by the kids. He would often come home to find them crowded around his table and eating his hard-earned food. Not that he ever complained. He was happy for the company.
But his favourite candy, Baby Ruths, were hidden in the highest cupboard at the back, away from prying eyes.
So when he came home one day to find Eddie sitting on the countertop, surrounded by the kids and eating one of his chocolate bars, Steve was surprised and a little annoyed. He snatched the half-eaten candy bar from him with a glare. Eddie grinned knowingly back, even daring to wink.
"What the hell, Eddie?"
"I figured you'd have a secret stash somewhere."
"Yeah, it's secret for a reason. These are mine."
"Aww, don't be a sore loser, Stevie."
"Fuck you."
Dustin gasped, throwing a marshmallow at Steve's head. "No swearing!"
"No! You lot come here nearly every day and eat my shit! I can't have one goddamn thing just for me?" Steve snapped, thawing the candy bar back at Eddie. He flinched as it bounced off his chest and Steve realised how quiet it was. Everyone was staring at him in surprise. He could feel a flush creeping up his neck and cleared his throat. "Never mind, it's been a long day. I'm gonna get changed."
Avoiding everyone's eye - especially Eddie's - Steve hurried upstairs. When he returned he felt a little ashamed of his outburst and was ready to apologise but the words died on his tongue when he got to the kitchen. Eddie was gone.
The kids were arguing about a new game at the arcade, Black Tiger or something, Steve's outburst long forgotten. He sat down quietly and tried not to feel too guilty that Eddie felt he had to leave. Max caught his eye and grinned smugly.
Before he could ask the front door opened and closed and a moment later Eddie was back. he caught sight of Steve and grinned too. "Okay, I'm sorry for stealing your chocolate. I hope this makes up for it." He handed Steve a bag.
Steve swallowed thickly. "You didn't have to-"
"Just shut up and look."
So he did and found Eddie had gone to the store and bought him several Baby Ruths. Each one had 'Steve's property' scribbled on the front in large black letters. He laughed and grabbed Eddie, hugging him tightly. "Thanks, Eds. I really am sorry for snapping at you."
"It's cool. Shouldn't have stolen your shit." Eddie grinned guiltily. "We good?"
"More than good." Steve found he didn't want to let go and neither did Eddie apparently. They were standing arms wrapped around each other and grinning goofily when Max cleared her throat loudly, making them jump and spring apart.
"Oh, don't stop on our account. Are you gonna kiss yet?"
Steve rolled his eyes. "Max, we're not-"
But Eddie grabbed his face and planted a chaste but hard kiss on his lips. Stunned, Steve stared at him with wide eyes. Eddie just shrugged and hopped up on the counter again. "Give the kids what they want, Stevie. They always get their way anyway."
"Fine," he grumbled, jumping up next to him. Handing over a Baby Ruth, they both ate quietly until the attention returned to the arcade. "Do you wanna do that again?" Steve asked lowly.
"Once the buttheads are gone?"
"Deal."
