Despite being in more battles than she had war scars, Vaggie ends up in a nearby infirmary after a bad encounter on a mission. Luckily for her, a pretty nurse whose father was also in the military is taking care of her and it's helping her relax despite her position.

Soldier/Nurse AU

Hello friends! This was originally a random three AM prompt that I couldn't help but finish but I figured I might as well post it lol Hope it's enjoyable to you all!

I took the call of duty at the first chance I could when I was a young teen. I was alright in school, I got by pretty easily with minimal effort, but I knew that I had a purpose to serve since I was little and I jumped at the first chance I could to enroll in the military. I know there were stories that only fucked up kids jump at the chance to join the military, but I felt like it was my destiny to join the armed forces. That I would fight for the rights and safety of my people where others couldn't.

The fact I could be able to escape the bullshit of my home life was just a bonus.

I trained under Admiral Adam for years. Was one of the top "bad bitches" in his Marine platoon. I quickly raised ranks under his guide and even became the leader of my own platoon, The Hazbins. We're a scrappy bunch. A ragtag group of fighters with different skills and traits that all caused glory to our names. At first, younger cadets would call has-beens due to the stories about each of us from our private days, but would quickly shut their mouths once they realized we were the top platoon outside of Admiral Adam's. Being given some of the most dangerous missions and coming back with more accomplishments than expected.

I was a leader and a fellow Sargent named Hugues was my right-hand man in the platoon. His code name was Husk. He got his name from leaves shells of ammo rounds and men in his wake. He had such precise aim and quick reflexes that whoever went against him became a husk after the encounter.

Then there was Anthony, code-named Angel Dust. A flirtatious but quick-thinking medic of the platoon who could get himself and others out of tough situations faster than Hell. People often compared him to a spider because of how he seemed to move quickly and keep on his toes at all times. The fact that he could use his charm to set up traps didn't help with the comparison either.

There was also Cherry, who went by Cherry Bomb as well, who was the explosives expert. The name quite clearly implies itself once you get to see the manic the woman became when too many explosives were given to her.

We were the four-man squad that would take on any mission and showcase what a few Marines could really do. We were even hand-picked plenty of times to join Admiral Adam on "suicide" missions more times than I could count. We always came back on top. Always striving to be ready for the next deployment. Always able and willing to serve.

Until recently.

The pain in my back felt as if the shards of scrap metal that had empaled my skin days before were still digging into my body as I did my best to lay still in the infirmary bed. My empty eye socket ached and burned as memories flashed within my mind of the final minutes of our last mission.

Angel was off helping Cherry set up a perfect trap to secure the enemy tanker that was bound to send supplies and support to the mainlines. The plan was to make a small calculated explosion occur right under the tread of the right side of the tanker so that we could flank the left side and capture whatever surviving tank members we could for intel. Drastically important there was a supposed important document being transported by the tank squad for the enemy Admiral's convoy.

What we didn't expect was that they knew we were coming and set up a small trap of their own to balance the playing field.

I remember running alongside Admiral Adam to lead Lute and a few others of his platoon to the flank. Only for one to not realize she detonated a buried mine and caused a domino explosion across the roadside. Most of the soldiers were out of the radius of the explosion, but I unluckily, was not. The mine she set had clusters of sheet metal trapped within it that sprung out and scattered across toward any near victims and they instantly went across my back like a million little needles stabbing me at once. I screamed in agony as a few more mines went off around me. I was able to dodge most of the scrap metal, but one lodged itself into my eye and a few got into my arms and legs. I tried my best not to fall onto my knees as it would have plunged the metal deeper into my skin. Admiral Adam and the rest of his platoon rushed forward still, leaving me in agony as Husk rushed over to assist me.

"Medic! Get your ass over here now!" My vision started to fade rapidly as I felt myself being dragged over toward the ditch in the side road as the roars of battle and Husk's ragging voice screamed out incessantly more. "MEDIC!"

I groaned to myself as I looked down at my bandaged hands and arms before running a hand through my hair.

To say I was lucky to be alive is an understatement. Anthony stated that I was far enough from the explosion to keep the scrap metal from going too deep into my arteries but I was not far enough to be kept from immense damage. I was lucky not to bleed out, let alone not die from the impact.

I looked over myself once more as I shifted slightly so I could sit up a little so all my weight wasn't on the healing wound on my back.

Admiral left me to die but my team had my side. I risked my life time and time again to save his ass but when mine needs saving, it's my team that are left to save it.

Sad, isn't it?

"Oh, you're awake." I brought my attention up toward the soft voice that suddenly appeared before me. I was still adjusting somewhat to the loss of use of my one eye, but I could somehow make out her features clear as day. She was a tall woman with long blonde hair tied in a braided ponytail behind her. Her pale complexion was complimented by her rosy cheeks and white nurse uniform. She had soft yet intelligent blue eyes that looked at me without any pity, but sympathy as she walked up to my bedside. A small smile took over her face as she messed with something beside me. "I would do the whole 'You're lucky to be here' speech, but I'm sure you feel that enough right now, huh?"

"Just a little." I couldn't help but smile as my response earned a small chuckle out of the woman.

"Based on the uniform I saw as you were brought in, I'm guessing you're a Marine?" I turned my head a little to watch the woman as she pulled out a small notepad from her uniform pocket and started to scribble.

"Sargent Motha at your service." I gave a small nod as I knew it wasn't smart of me to salute while she was now messing with the vial bag connected to my hand. "Leader of The Hazbins Platoon under Admiral Adam."

"Oh! So you must know Anthony!" I watched as she smiled wide toward me before scribbling something else down on her notepad. "He used to come by and volunteer here and there when he had the time outside of working for his family. He still stops by now and then to lend a hand whenever we have an influx of soldiers and he's stationed nearby." I quirked a brow as I connected a few dots within my mind.

Anthony used to praise a young woman he knew whenever someone would speak about how good of a medic he was. He always would say that he learned everything he could from a woman named Lilith and her daughter who were some of the best nurses anyone could ever see. Would gush about the infirmary that ran which gave him a chance to run away from his family's crime life and how even the husband, a former admiral by the name of Lucifer Morningstar, all came together to help as many people as they could.

He spoke several times about how even with Lilith gone and the infirmary now being run by the daughter and husband in her memory, it was still the best place to bring your injured for not just amazing care but for otherworldly hospitality.

"Of course, Angel brought me to the place that he gushed about so highly." This caused the woman to smile widely and have this joyful glow to her as she gave a small nod.

"Welcome to Pentagram Infirmary! The best care a soldier or civilian could ask for in these trying times. My name is Charlotte Morningstar, by the way. But everyone around here calls me Charlie."

"Nice to meet you, Charlie." I couldn't help but smile at the happy energy that just seemed to flow easily from the taller blonde. "You can call me Vaggie then, if we're gonna be on a first-name basis."

"Sargent Vaggie Motha." Charlie had a smirk as she pulled a stethoscope from around her neck and placed them in their ears. "Pretty name for a soldier." I felt a soft blush take over my face as she placed the other end of her stethoscope over my heart. "Now easy breaths, Vaggie."

Easy for you to say, Nurse Morningstar.

I did my best to keep my breathing steady as Charlie seemed to study what I could guess was my heartbeat. It was hard to keep myself from looking over her features though as with her so close, I could see the faint freckles that were slightly hidden by the naturally rosy tint of her cheeks. I could swear in that moment that if we were in any other universe the woman must have been an angel instead of a nurse.

Anthony would tease that he had the prettiest little sisters in the world, both adopted and biological, as he claimed that he and the head nurse's daughter were more like siblings by the time he signed up for the Marines.

I swallowed hard as I caught Charlie's gaze for a second before she smiled and pulled back from me to take the stethoscope off and loop it around her neck once more.

Angel Dust is on a roll for being right today, honestly.

"I'm going to go grab a tray of instruments I'm going to use to make sure there isn't anything we missed when you first arrived and to run some quick tests. Is there anything I can grab you that could make you more comfortable in the meantime? A pen and paper to write to your platoon, perhaps?"

"I don't think I'll be any good at writing at this time, but I would like to notice them of my state."

"I can always help you write to them." Charlie smiled sweetly as I shook my head.

"I'm sure you have plenty of other patients that desire your care, Charlie. It'll be fine."

"We've got more staff than normal today, so I have the time if you wish to write to them. I don't mind at all!" I couldn't help but chuckle for a second before giving Charlie a smirk.

"At this point, Miss Morningstar, I would think you just want to spend some time with me." She giggled as a wide smile took over her lips.

"Well, it's not very often that I get such a pretty patient." I couldn't help but blush at her words as she pocketed her little notebook. "I'll go grab what I need for tests then as well as what we'll need to write your platoon. I'll grab some water and some more pain meds too because I'm sure what we gave you a few hours ago is bound to wear off any moment now." I watched Charlie thoughtlessly as she moved toward the door of my room with that same wide smile that now caused something within my chest to flutter. "Now don't go anywhere. If I know anything about Marines, and my father was one for years, you'll jump at the first chance to leave this place."

"Now that's the first wrong thing I heard today," I would have slapped myself for not keeping my mouth shut, but my mind just kept going as it decided for me what it wanted to say. "With someone like you around, I may not miss the combat at all." I could swear I saw a glimpse of a blush on her cheeks as Charlie rolled her eyes with a teasing smile.

"I'll be right back, Vaggie." I nodded my head as I felt that same fluttering feeling within my chest as Charlie left my infirmary room without another word.

There's a high chance I'll be discharged from my position. I lost an eye and had quite a bit of scrap metal in my body for me to not get seen as unfit for the field. There's a lot that will have to change and I'll have to find out what else Admiral Adam has for me as my strategies have been the thing keeping our sector going.

I couldn't help but smile a little as my eyes still stared at where the blonde nurse once was.

But I think I'll worry about that later. For now, I'll let myself heal.

After all, I think a certain Morningstar wouldn't let me do much otherwise.
