The next day, Raincall woke up Leafpaw, Lavapaw, and Clawpaw who were sleeping in the bramble bush. Clawpaw had small pricks all over her body, including a few particularly painful areas, making her groan and limp. Raincall instructed them to swim three laps around the lake while carrying a heavy rock. Leafpaw was very sore after the swimming exercise. Later, Raincall assigned them the task of cleaning up the dirtplace. Unfortunately, Lavapaw ended up with more ticks than Minnowsight!

Afterward, the three of them were forced to roll in fox dung. Raincall even made them collect mouse bile, and then dump it on each other. When Lavapaw refused, she was forced to sit on a branch positioned in a particular position so she would slowly have it poke into her more and more. While Lavapaw sat on her branch, Leafpaw and Clawpaw were made to carry each other and Raincall around the territory. When Leafpaw asked to make dirt, she was told to do it on top of Clawpaw, and when she didn't, Raincall made dirt and put it on her.

Then, they had to climb on a branch and painstakingly cover it with moss for Raincall's comfort. Clawpaw fell off and twisted her leg, and since Raincall forbade her from going to Icewhisker, she had to have Leafpaw help her treat it. Lavapaw was forced to make a bramble barrier around the camp, and a thick bunch of brambles in one spot, which was the only way they were allowed to enter the camp.

Then, for the rest of the day, Raincall beat them with sticks. She also rubbed honey on them and forced them to hang on a branch. Then she swatted a hornet nest at the three of them. Hornets stung them and it took until sundown for the sting marks to go away. After Leafpaw was let down, she fell over because a hornet had somehow gotten stuck on her. Clawpaw pried it off and got several stings on her paws, so Lavapaw had to carry her back, making a quick detour into the river.

When Leafpaw pushed through the thick brambles in the entrance, she was sore, and everything hurt. She had scratches everywhere and she still wasn't allowed to go to Icewhisker.

Then, Raincall came over, "You've completed a fifth of my punishments. Do better tomorrow slackers."

Lavapaw and Clawpaw groaned while Leafpaw licked her wounds. How can we get out of this?

At that moment, Icewind, Doveripple, and Stormfrost came running over. "Where have you been all day?" Doveripple demanded.

"I'm sorry Doveripple," Lavapaw said.

Clawpaw added, "We were hunting and fell in a hole with some hornets. It took us all day to get out," giving her a look that meant Raincall would probably punish us more if she found out we told someone.

"You mean you fell in a hole and dragged us in with you," Leafpaw said, catching onto what Clawpaw was doing. But wouldn't she get banished if we told Birchstar? She's already on probation.

"You should go visit Icewhisker. Those cuts look pretty deep," Stormfrost said.

"If you want, I can help carry you. It must hurt to walk," Icewind said, looking at Clawpaw's paws.

"N-No, I'm fine," Clawpaw refused, wincing as she limped to the medicine den. Leafpaw and Lavapaw followed, both half-carrying Clawpaw.

After Icewhisker fixed them up, she confined Clawpaw to bed rest. Leafpaw and Lavapaw padded out, covered in blackberry poultice, not sure what to do. Just then, she saw Doveripple heading for Birchstar's den. I wonder what she's doing. Leafpaw decided to follow her and listened outside of the den.

Doveripple was saying, "Birchstar, I think you should assign a different mentor for Leafpaw."

"But why? I think you have been doing excellently," Birchstar argued.

"Because Leafpaw got stuck in a hole all day with hornets and I didn't think to look for her, or even bother to do anything! I just stayed in the warrior's den and played with Hawkstream."

"That doesn't mean you have to stop being a mentor," Birchstar said.

"I still want Leafpaw to be reassigned. She deserves better than me," Doveripple said.

"Fine. Come back in a moon. If you still want to be reassigned, I'll consider it," Birchstar said.

Doveripple padded out and Leafpaw walked over, "I bet you two listened to the whole thing didn't you?" She said miserably.

"Yep. But I don't think you're a bad mentor. It wasn't your fault you didn't look for me. If I was you, I wouldn't look for me either," Leafpaw said, "Actually if I was you, I'd go back and spend more time 'playing' with Hawkstream."

"Yeah," Lavapaw said, "I heard he wants kits."

"Lavapaw!" Leafpaw said, "We weren't supposed to tell her! Oh well. Just try to have them after my apprenticeship, will you? Otherwise, you might have to get reassigned after all."
