"It's Bella," he blurts. "She's awake."
"What?" I jump up, turning in circles, not sure what to do. "Awake, awake?"
I put Masie in her carrier.
Grab my keys.
"Yeah," he breathes excitedly. "The doctors kept me out so they could check her, but"—he heaves a sigh—"yeah."
Buckle Masie in.
"We're on the way."
My entire body quakes.
Slow down.
I lift my foot. Check the mirror. Masie's asleep.
We make it.
The car jerks to a stop, and I grab her carrier.
We power-walk to the sliding doors.
They're locked.
Security guard says visiting hours are over.
