Remnants of a Courier
Chapter 22: The Little Things
Joshua let out a sigh as he went along his patrol route.
All classes had started already which meant that the halls were empty. This also meant that there was nothing to do but walk in silence followed by sitting around in a security room. What an exciting day. At least he got a lunch break eventually.
That did give him time to be proud of the work he did last night as he maintained a leisurely stroll.
First, he had monitored the cameras and seen where most students and staff went to when it got dark out. He'd have to monitor them multiple nights to be sure of their schedule but it was a good start. Especially when he monitored Ozpin who retired to the tower where his office was.
As he walked, Six's gaze shifted to one of the classrooms, peering in through the window on the door. It looked like a slightly overweight teacher was giving a lesson.
The second thing he had done was alter his elite riot armor. Using the various tools and paints he had acquired at the workshop, Six redesigned his armor.
The cauldrons on his armor were painted white along with several other minor areas along his armor. Mostly throughout his chest and abdomen. He even added on white spikes on his shoulders and along the forearms.
The most impressive piece however was the cover for his mask. Joshua had mimicked it after the White Fang mask with a few minor alterations. There were no intricate designs as it was just a solid white color. And while the White Fang masks were sleek, his was rough and had a savage appearance to it. The cover went over his riot armor mask and covered the upper portion of it.
All in all, this was meant to give the appearance of a Grimm. That was the general theme most people had given the Mimic so far. He might as well play into that.
The Courier turned away from the window, only just now realizing that he had been staring in for far too long. Long enough that the first period was coming to a close. This meant that students were starting to file into the hallways again.
His shuffling feet picked up speed as he went to complete his route in some sort of timely manner.
One shift done, or at least, the route for it. Now all he had to do was head to the security room and monitor the cameras for a while.
Joshua turned a corner before stopping in his tracks. He heard voices from ahead of him.
"Ruby, I've made more mistakes than any man, woman, and child on this planet. But at this moment, I would not consider your appointment to leader to be one of them."
That was Ozpin's voice. Who was he talking to?
Six strode down the hall before spotting Ruby and Ozpin speaking. So, he was giving one of his students a pep-talk huh? At least the headmaster took the time for the little people.
He continued walking until he came to a large open archway that led outside. In the courtyard nearby Joshua could hear and see Weiss speaking with the overweight professor from earlier.
The Courier paused while passing the archway and listened for a few moments. It quickly dawned on him that both of the discussions going on were about Weiss and Ruby respectively.
Normally, it wasn't any of his business; but there was a certain part of him that felt guilty for Weiss. He sighed before pulling up his Pip-Boy and tapping on it to try and look busy.
Most of the conversation went as he expected. The overweight professor pointing out Weiss's flaws and Ozpin trying to encourage Ruby.
There was merit in their words but it didn't seem to be hitting home with the white-themed girl. Six listened in on the conversation, trying to discern what the problem was.
"-so instead of fretting about what you don't have, savor what you do." The mustached professor's words were generally wise. But the look on the young girl's face seemed anything but pleased.
"You don't know what I don't have, how are you supposed to savor…" Weiss seemed to catch herself as her fists clenched and her eyes closed. The heiress turned away before saying, "thank you for your time professor Port."
It sounded like he hadn't caught anything useful. Just the end of the conversation.
At roughly the same time, Ruby finished her conversation. The silver-eyed girl made her way to the same archway he was at and glanced at Weiss with a thoughtful expression on her face.
Six did his best to look inconspicuous as Weiss began walking towards the two of them. Before the irritated student made her way towards them, Ruby left in a hurry. This left just him and Weiss. He was a bit surprised that Ruby hadn't recognized him but maybe she was just too focused on her task.
The white-haired girl didn't seem to notice him either. Was he better at blending in than he thought? Figuring he might as well help, Six looked up before saying, "something on your mind ma'am?"
The future huntress seemed stunned for a moment as she realized someone was talking to her. Whatever she had been thinking about must have distracted her.
"Oh, it's you," she said absently, still somewhat in thought. "There's just a lot that seems… Unfair right now. I don't know how to handle it."
The Courier's gaze moved to the sun outside as he thought. While he was thinking, Weiss's eyes shifted to his wrist.
"I'd say that a lot in life is going to be unfair. You'll be put in unfair scenarios or lose people. I think it's just a matter of getting through it." Six paused for a few moments before turning back to her and continuing, "what I guess I'm saying is that you need determination. Never stop moving forward no matter how unfair it gets. Oh, and talk to people, I hear that helps."
Joshua felt a bit out of his element giving life advice to a teenager but he still felt he needed to try. Her gaze was settled on his wrist seemingly lost in thought.
"Of course, I'm just security, take my advice with a grain of salt," Six continued before shrugging.
Weiss seemed focused on his wrist. "I… Think I understand. Say, where did you get that device on your wrist? It looks familiar?" The teenager's words caused House to freeze up momentarily. He hadn't even thought about her recognizing his Pip-Boy.
"It was a gift from a friend," Six replied, trying to keep his tone as neutral as possible. "Basically, it functions as a scroll and it was free so I couldn't say no."
There were a few moments of silence as Weiss continued to stare and Joshua could feel his hand clench. The girl finally looked away, seemingly not recognizing the Pip-Boy.
"Right," she said while shaking her head. Weiss's gaze moved back to him. "As for your advice, thank you. Though I don't want to burden a stranger with my troubles anymore."
"It's what we're here for I guess, don't worry about it." After he spoke, Six took a more rigid posture with his hands behind his back. Both to look more professional and to hide his Pip-Boy.
The girl seemed to think about something for a moment as her eyes narrowed. "Do you," she began before pausing to choose her words. "Are you a bad person if someone dies but you don't feel sad about it?"
Six eyed the girl through his helmet before speaking, "ma'am, people die every day and we hardly think about it. It depends on the person. Were they a good person that was close to you? Someone you didn't know? Someone you hated? It's all a matter of perspective."
"Perspective," Weiss echoed before sitting in silence for a few moments. Her pensive look never wavered as she said, "thank you for your time, I need to go think." With that, the white-themed girl turned and began walking away from him. Leaving him alone.
"Goodbye," she called back to him as she slowly disappeared down the hall.
The Courier waved to her while replying, "so long."
With that done, it was high time to head to the security room for a boring day.
