Remnants of a Courier

Chapter 23: The Lesson

It was time for a lesson.

The Courier held Maria at the ready at his side. Across from him stood the entirety of team CRDL. None of the students were happy considering this was an extracurricular activity and extra work outside their classes.

But he couldn't get out of doing this, so neither can they. Six motioned them to attack him and they all charged.

The group was in a secluded part of the academy that Six had discovered by going over the school's blueprints. It was a relatively small field of grass that was walled in on all sides by buildings. Fortunately, the walls didn't have windows which meant no onlookers generally.

Now, this wasn't the first lesson he'd given. Over the last three weeks he had been giving his time to many of the first-year students at Ozpin's request. In that time, he had become well known.

His time there had been boring but relaxing. Something he had never gotten to do in the Wasteland, relax.

Cardin came at him first, swinging his oversized mace overhead like a toothpick. Six merely stepped to the side of such a broadcasted attack, the ground around the two shaking with the impact.

Maria was aimed at Russel and fired. The bullets that flew at the student kept the dagger-wielding boy away for now as Sky tried to creep up behind him.

He had several feelings about these boys. Most of them were negative. Bullies, idiots, doomed for failure, all of these were apt descriptions of the group.

Sky: blue hair, a pretty boy, and wielded a halberd. The kid made a sweeping motion with his halberd at Six who in turn grappled Cardin.

The Courier kicked out Cardin's leg while grabbing his arm. Then in one fluid motion he pushed the larger teenager towards Sky. This caused the halberd to connect with Cardin's head, knocking him to the ground.

The shock of realizing he had just hit his own teammate gave Six the opening he needed to move in and kick Sky right between the legs.

As the kid leaned over in pain, Joshua brought his gun up to his forehead and fired off a few dust rounds. Lowering the kid's aura enough that he was out of the fight.

Ulysses House had come to be known as the "Untouchable Instructor" among his students or "Mister Untouchable." Not a single trainee had managed to land a blow on him yet. This was in part because he didn't want them to figure out he had no aura. Though he still hadn't faced off against the two most promising first-year teams, teams RWBY and JNPR. This also gave him the perfect excuse to not sync his aura to a scroll.

Six had learned through some trials and errors that while proximity was one of the triggers for him getting through a Huntsman's aura there was something else too. He figured it was either intent or emotion that—when coupled with proximity—meant he could punch right through aura.

That made this convenient for this fight as he didn't have to worry about accidentally blowing Sky's brains out.

By now the last member of the team was closing in on him. Dove was an average looking student that wielded a sword-gun. The entire team was subpar but Dove was the weak point.

Still, any student that made it into Beacon wasn't to be underestimated. Dove and Russel had him in a pincer attack.

Russel was the biggest danger, he was quick, fast, and wielded daggers that complemented his style. Still, compared to Six's experience, they might as well be children. It helped that he had been trained by Rangers and Frumentarii alike.

Dove swung at the instructor who in turn stepped back to avoid the blow. This brought him right into Russel's range which gave him the opening to lunge at Six.

The two students were the most team-orientated of the group. Still, Joshua knew this and had planned accordingly.

Russel's eyes opened in surprise as Six ducked down which caused the student's attack to go over him. This was followed by House gripping his wrist and placing a hand on his chest before vaulting him over. This sent the student straight into Dove which brought them both crashing to the ground.

By this time, Cardin had gotten back to his feet and was charging Six from behind. The instructor only needed to bait out a specific attack.

Joshua turned and stepped back at the larger student's swing; not only avoiding the blow but moving towards the two students on the ground.

The mace was brought back around as Six backed up out of the way again. This pissed Cardin off who brought the mace above his head again to crush his instructor.

This was the plan. Joshua successfully baited out the overhead attack and merely stepped to the side again. Too late did Cardin realize both his teammates were still getting up as the attack nearly shattered both their auras. What he lacked in tactics, Cardin more than made up for in strength.

Six made a few low clicking sounds as the now enraged student turned to him. "What a shame, I thought you'd do better," Joshua commented while firing a few rounds at Cardin.

The student didn't bother to dodge and simply took the bullets as he charged. His aura was quickly depleting as he wildly swung at Six who deftly dodged every attack.

Finally, Cardin managed to grab the Courier by the neck which brought a smile to the boy's face. This smile quickly faded as Six jumped up before wrapping his legs around the offender's arm.

With a quick twist of his body, Cardin found himself being yanked down to the ground and landed face first.

A few more well-placed shots to the face was all it took for the fight to be over.

"So, what have we learned," Six commented as he stood up and brushed off his uniform.

There were a few groans in response before one of them muttered the words, "that you're an asshole…"

"True, but not what I meant." Six took the time to straighten out his uniform. After all, he had spent a good deal of time on it.

During his free time, Six recolored the vest and helmet of his uniform. It now matched the same light grey with teal highlights as the rest of his uniform.

"You all need to work more as a team. Dove and Russel had the right idea but need to work on their reaction times." As Six began lecturing them, another chorus of moans escaped the group.

"Don't blame me because you're smacking each other around in a fight where you're supposed to be working together." As he spoke, the students slowly began sitting up.

Yes, they were bullies. Yes, the group wasn't the best. Everything he had thought about them before was true. But the biggest disappointment to Six? The wasted potential. He could see skill that needed discipline to refine it. Strength with no code to guide it.

"Other than that… You all need more discipline, some of your attacks were sloppy. Too slow and predictable. I'm looking at you Cardin." The student in question rolled his eyes.

"Power doesn't matter if you can't land a hit. Plus, I easily made you angry which made you stupid. Also, note that I turned your strength against you." As Six spoke, he walked towards the leader of Team CRDL.

Once close, Six leaned down and continued speaking, "oh, and stop picking on Jaune or any other students. It makes huntsman and yourself look bad. Have some respect for what you're aspiring to be."

It was easy to tell Cardin's personality would make him target Jaune. But Six didn't even need to do that level of deduction when he watched several encounters between the two over cameras. It was disgusting the staff weren't stepping in to stop it.

"If you don't stop," Six began as he let his façade slip for a moment. "This will look like a pleasant time compared to what I'll do to you." He pointed towards the kid's face before continuing, "I like starting with the eyes."

The intensity was there one moment and gone the next as Six leaned back up. "Alright, you're all dismissed. Get out of here. Next time we'll work on drills to strengthen team bonding."

The group quickly left the vicinity, with Cardin out the door before anyone else. Maybe Six would be nicer on the kid next time. Probably not.

It was better to keep the Cardin bullying problem on the down-low. There was no reason to confront him in front of a crowd about it. Be polite, be professional, but put a stop to it.

This gave Six a few moments to relax as he thought on the past few weeks. The workshop at the academy was fantastic. He doubted there was a better one in the entirety of Vale.

This meant that work on the transportalponder had continued. Especially with the raw materials he could purchase with the funding from both Roman and Ozpin.

That was where the good news ended. Even with the better facility, it didn't compare to the technological marvels of the Think Tank. While Six, given time, could likely figure out how to make everything, he didn't have the tools necessary to make the most complex parts. Nor the materials.

That still didn't address the power issue he was still having. His mixtures of ice and wind dust only meant the power source lasted for a few seconds longer before exploding. Six would have to find something else.

After team CRDL left, a familiar face walked towards him. Jaune looked a bit nervous as he approached.

Some of the students had taken to sitting against a wall and watching his training or more accurately the fights. People were interested in the man that used such a simple weapon. After all, almost all huntsman weapons doubled as close-quarters tools as well. Except his.

"Something you need Jaune?" Six's question caused the nervous young man to clear his throat.

"Y-You see, I was actually here to ask for a favor but I overheard what you said to Cardin." The blonde paused again while looking away, rather nervous. His head turned back to Six as he continued, "I just wanted to say thanks for that. Although you didn't have to threaten him."

"No problem. What was the favor you wanted to ask?" It wasn't that Six didn't appreciate being thanked but he didn't really want to get into Jaune's problems right now. And he'd ignore that last little comment Jaune made.

"Oh, right," Jaune said seemingly remembering his favor. The teenager pulled out his sword and shield before saying," I know you use simple weapons as well and… I was wondering if you could train me? I mean, Pyrrha asked to help but she's my teammate and…"

Six got it, he was an instructor meant to train them. Pyrrha was his partner and had better things to do than baby him.

"Sure, but do you just want to wait until your team has a session with me?" Six's question caused the boy to shake his head.

"No, I'm behind everyone so I have to work harder than everyone too so I can catch up." Jaune's words made sense to Six although the boy would come to regret it.

While Joshua didn't know why Ozpin had let Jaune in despite being completely incompetent, maybe he could do something to change the incompetent part.

"Sure thing," Six replied a smile spreading across his face. "Ready to start?"

"W-What," Jaune asked as his mouth and eyes opened wider

"You wanted to improve, and we're starting now." Six wouldn't lie that he did enjoy the look of pure dread on the student's face.
