"Why do people always talk about 'the middle of nowhere'?" Dee mused, leaning back on his elbows, chewing on a stalk of grass. "I mean, it can't be nowhere, gotta be somewhere 'cause otherwise we couldn't be here. Right?"
Lying beside his lover on the picnic blanket, Ryo dragged his attention away from cloud watching to give the question some thought. "Maybe they just mean being somewhere that doesn't have a place name."
"Sure, but even then, most places are called somethin'. State parks have names, so do mountains, lakes, rivers, and forests, even if the only people know those names are the locals."
Ryo chuckled. "Maybe the person who coined the phrase just got completely lost and didn't know where the hell they were."
"Yeah." Dee took the grass stem from his mouth and pointed it at his partner. "Now THAT explanation makes sense. Get lost in the wilderness, you wouldn't be able to tell anyone where you were, or where you'd been, just out there somewhere, tryin' to find the way back to civilisation." He turned to Ryo, looking thoughtful. "Do we know where we are?"
"Out here, somewhere," Ryo teased. "Enjoying the sunshine."
"That sounds about right."
