A/N : Last small chapter, I promise ! This is just a nice day with everyone, mostly Jet and Haru. I just felt like I wanted to write on that so...
Enjoy !
A few weeks later, the famous Fairy Tail's 24-hour race was coming up. Everyone was getting excited, except for one person: Jet. Every year since he joined, he had won the race. I mean, he focuses on speed, so that explains it. But since a certain phoenix slayer joined the guild, things were not really going his way...
"What's with the look, Jet?" asked Levy, noticing his sour expression.
"I still don't know how to win against that brat," he mumbled, earning a smile from Levy.
"You mean Haru? You think you can't beat him?"
"Levy, please, he nearly teleports. I'm fast, but hell, I'm way too slow for that guy," he grumbled.
"Hey, it's the brat! Good luck with the race!" Jet heard a voice behind him. Turning around, he saw me waving teasingly at him.
"God damn you, Sparky," Jet muttered.
—
Race day had come, and it was time to see who was the fastest between Jet and Haru. In fact, the rivalry was so strong that even the others weren't as determined as in previous years.
"Do we even need to race?" asked Gray, leaning against a post.
"Yeah, I don't get the point" added Gajeel. "This isn't even fair."
"Come on, guys, stop slacking" said Erza, already stretching and warming up.
"Today is the day, children," announced Makarov. "The race will be starting soon!"
Everyone got into place. Jet and I stood next to each other on the front line.
I looked at Jet, grinning. "Good luck, bud."
He grimaced in response.
"START!" said Makarov.
Both Jet and I disappeared. Literally. The others were still on the starting line, sweatdropping.
"That was to be expected," said Mira with a sigh.
"Well, see you at the finish line, guys!" added Erza, sprinting off.
As anyone could expect, Jet and I didn't need even an hour to finish the race. And also as expected, I was faster than him.
Once I reached the first checkpoint, I grabbed my wyvern scale and rushed down the other side to get back to the finish line. The forest blurred around me as I sped through the trees, electricity crackling at each step, my senses sharp and focused. The thrill of the race pumped adrenaline through my veins, but a part of me couldn't help but think about Jet's determination.
I sprinted down the forest, the finish line finally in sight.
"Huh, they left about 17 minutes ago, Master..." said Kinana.
"Yeah, I know..." Makarov answered, frustrated. "I might have to rethink the rules. These kids are getting way too strong. Talk about a 24-hour race..." he added.
I had slowed down a bit so that Jet could catch up. I knew he could see me from where he was, and that's why I skidded to a stop just before passing the line.
Jet was so surprised he also stopped. "Huh? Why'd you stop?" I asked.
"Why did YOU stop? You were gonna pass the line," he growled, panting.
I smiled. "Because I'm not gonna finish first," I answered bluntly.
Jet raised an eyebrow. "Why would that be?"
"Listen, I saw you. I saw you train, day and night, working on your speed. And to be honest, I didn't do shit. And this is not to be cocky, for real."
Jet was taken aback. "What's your point? I don't get it."
"You deserve to win this way more than I do. That's why my plan always was to stop before the line so you could win," I simply smiled.
Jet was speechless. "R-Really? You really planned that all along?"
"Yeah. You gave up your days to train for this race, and I just slacked at the bar. You deserve this way more. So chop chop, pass that line," I grinned.
Jet finally smiled. "I see... In that case," he grabbed me when I wasn't paying attention and passed the line holding me close.
"Well, I guess it's a tie!" declared Makarov.
I blinked in surprise. Jet smacked me on the back. "Ya know, winning isn't the most important thing after all. I'm glad you're that kind of guy, Haru. Thanks again," he said, reaching out for a handshake.
I grinned, clasping his hand in mine. "Anytime, Jet."
And the last ones were Natsu and Gray. Like we ever doubted.
The post-race celebration was a lively affair. Fairy Tail members gathered around, sharing food and drinks, recounting their favorite moments from the race. Haru and Jet, the stars of the event, were surrounded by friends and well-wishers.
Gray and Natsu, having finally caught up, stumbled across the finish line together, both exhausted and bickering as usual. "I told you I'd beat you, ice-brain!" Natsu gloated, despite them tying for last place.
"In your dreams, flame-breath," Gray retorted, rolling his eyes.
Meanwhile, Levy approached Jet with a proud smile. "You did great, Jet. Even if it was a tie, you showed everyone your dedication."
Jet blushed slightly, scratching the back of his head. "Thanks, Levy. It means a lot."
Erza, ever the motivator, clapped her hands to gather everyone's attention. "Alright, everyone! Let's make this a day to remember. We've shown our strength and spirit today, and that's what Fairy Tail is all about!"
"They really use anything to party, don't they? '' said Lucy, exasperated.
The guild members cheered, lifting their mugs in a toast. "To Fairy Tail!"
As the sun began to set, casting a warm glow over the guild, Jet and I sat together on the guild's roof, watching the festivities below. "You know," I began, "this race is more than just about speed."
Jet nodded, a content smile on his face. "Yeah. I know" he said, clearly understanding my point
The night went on, to the warm cheers and laughs coming from the guild.
And just like that, everyone finished the race, a smile on their face. Except Natsu and Gray, of course.
A/N : Done ! Now, for the next chapter... Well, you'll see, but I'm mixed between fear and excitement !
Until then, see ya !
