Chapter 23
Summary:
March
Helena has the Ice Princess and uses it to control Lucky. She wages war with Luke. Luke argues with Laura about Lucky and his concerns about Lucky still being under Helena's control. Lucky overhears and says Helena doesn't affect him. Helena boasts that the programming was going well and that phase two had been implemented. Lucky will become violent when angry but won't remember anything and will always think of himself as the victim.
Sorel's men kidnap Zander. Emily calls Jason for help. Jason finds and rescues Zander. He chastizes Zander for his stupidity. He must stay alive to testify against Sorel. Zander hides in a safe house until the trial.
After a day in the park, Lucky approaches Jason and Elizabeth. She says, "Lucky, whenever I turn around, you are up in my face. Stop stalking me."
Lucky replies, "I was wrong to push you into modeling. You helped to free me from Helena, but now we belong together."
"No, we don't."
Jason says, "Lucky, I think you should leave." Lucky takes a swing at Jason and misses. He tries to push Jason, but Jason won't budge. Lucky yanks Elizabeth's arm, and Jason smacks Lucky in the jaw. He wrenches Lucky's arm behind his back and throws him to the ground. "Never touch Elizabeth like that again. You won't win a fight with me. Leave her alone."

At Jake's, Jason is angry because Carly is hurting Elizabeth. He asks her point blank to ease up on Elizabeth, but Carly continues to criticize her. Jason cannot understand Carly's need to beat up on Elizabeth and dictate his personal life. Jason asks, "What is your problem? If you can't have me, then nobody can."
"That's not true. I'm only looking out for you. Elizabeth is not the right woman for you. She will break your heart and choose Lucky. I want you to find someone who loves you and only you. I want you to have what Sonny and I have. I am just trying to be a good friend here."
Jason asked Sonny if he could keep Carly off Elizabeth's back because she doesn't need the grief. Sonny said he would do his best. Jason slammed the door as he left. Carly argued that she was only trying to save Jason. Sonny said, "Why do you care who Jason is seeing?"
"We must look out for Jason because we are his best friends. We must protect him."
"Carly, you need to back off with the games. If you don't, you might lose Jason."

The Docks:
Lucky was heading back to Kelly's, hoping to find Elizabeth, when he ran into Helena. "Helena, I don't have time to play your games. I won't let you destroy my love with Elizabeth."
Helena took out the Ice Princess and held it before Lucky. "Lucky, you will attack Jason Morgan the next time you see him. He's an obstacle in your love with Elizabeth. Once you've maimed or killed him, you won't remember what happened. You will tell everyone you were protecting yourself from him." Helena hands Lucky a knife. "You know what to do, Lucky."
"Yes, my Queen."
Lucky waits for Jason, hiding in the shadows. He jumps Jason and holds the knife to his throat. Jason fights back and maintains a chokehold on Lucky. Elizabeth walks out of Kelly's and yells, "Lucky!" Lucky snaps out of his trance, and Jason pushes Lucky to the ground. Lucky accuses Jason of being the instigator. Elizabeth looks at Jason, and he shakes his head. "Jason doesn't lie; you do. I believe Jason." Lucky continues to bad-mouth Jason. "Lucky, you attacked Jason in the park almost two weeks ago. Why should I ever believe anything you say?"
Lucky tells Laura that Jason attacked him without provocation. She is concerned for Elizabeth, but Lucky says, "Don't bother; she is siding with Morgan. She's betrayed me again."
Emily confides in Elizabeth about her mother's Cancer. "Jason has Zander in some safehouse; if you see Jason, can you tell him for me?"
Elizabeth hugs her best friend. "Of course, Em. I am so sorry." Elizabeth reaches Jason and tells him about Monica. She offers to go with him.
April 2001
Summary:
Jason visits Monica. They have a loving moment. She has a biopsy. The results are benign.
Zander arrives to testify against Sorel. The verdict is guilty on all counts, and Sorel is sentenced to death. Zander and Emily start a new beginning.
Luke, Laura, Lucky, Nikolas, and Helena. Luke tries to convince Laura that Lucky is still in danger.
Carly, Sonny and….
Rae Cummings arrives with her daughter Skye and announces that Alan Quartermaine is the father. Monica doubts this reveal, but Alan thinks it's possible.
4/1-15/2001
Jason visits Monica in her hospital room and offers to wait with her for the biopsy results. " It's not necessary. It means a lot to me that you came." Jason leans over and kisses his mother's forehead.
Elizabeth is waiting outside the room with Emily. Jason talks to Emily about their mother and tells her to let her know if she needs anything.
Jason and Elizabeth walk to the courtyard across from GH. He says, "You look upset; did something happen with Lucky?"
"He's telling everyone you attacked him, and Laura found me expressing concern. She thinks you would do something to hurt me. I told her you would never hurt me, and something was off with Lucky. I told her about his attacking you in the park. During the knife attack, I saw him struggle with you, and he looked like he was in a trance. He snapped out of it when I yelled his name. Maybe he's not free from Helena after all."
"What will you do about it?"
"I told Laura. She and Luke have experience dealing with Helena. I'm sorry you got wrapped up in this drama."
Jason leans in and kisses her. "I don't want you to feel sorry. I don't like how Lucky hurt you. Don't you know what you mean to me?"
Elizabeth kisses him back. "I'd love for you to show me tonight."
Jason confides to Emily that something is wrong with Lucky, and he is not himself. His main concern is that he believes Elizabeth could be in danger with Lucky.
4/16
Lucky and Nikolas went down to the Wharf. The two brothers vented mutual anger over their family situations, not realizing that Helena was out of sight listening. When Lucky told Nicholas that his father was planning a move against Helena, Nicholas expressed his approval. After Nicholas left, Helena exited the shadows and triggered Lucky's programmed response by showing him the Ice Princess. Helena pulled out the Ice Princess, and Lucky started to reel. He tried to fight it, but his headaches became too painful.
Helena was smug, boasting how much she would enjoy taking Luke down with his own son. After she left, Lucky fell off his feet onto the bench and sat in a trance until Elizabeth and Emily arrived. They startled Lucky, but he did not come out of the lock for a few minutes. They tried questioning him, but he became defensive, so they backed off. Emily wants him to come with her to Kelly's. Lucky said no because he had something to do but could not tell her what. Elizabeth and Emily wondered as Lucky walked away. Emily says, "Liz, don't follow him. Jason told me he's concerned for your safety, and you should not be alone with Lucky."
"Em, I have no intention of putting myself in danger regarding Lucky. I think Helena is still controlling him, and I deserve better. I don't owe him anything."
At the park, Jason asks Elizabeth if she wants something more. She admits she wants something more than friendship, too. They share a kiss.

The Wharf: Elizabeth arrived, finding Jason and Carly in a heated discussion. Jason kisses Elizabeth. Carly rips into Elizabeth, calling her a spoiled rich girl who couldn't decide what she wanted.
Before Jason can intervene, Elizabeth counters back. "Spoiled rich girl? Please. Carly, I've primarily supported myself this past year. I've made decisions. I turned down the opportunity to become the Face of Deception. I didn't have a kid by AJ Quartermaine, who provides thousands of dollars a month in child support. I didn't marry Sonny, who is as rich as the Quartermaines. I live in a studio apartment, which is also my art workshop. You live in a lavish PH. I drive a used car; you have a limo and driver. Who is the spoiled rich one?"
"Well, you are indecisive."
Jason blocks what is about to become a catfight. "Carly, I told you to lay off Elizabeth. Leave her alone; you won't like my answer if you ask me to choose."

Sonny receives a package on his birthday. He stops Michael from opening it. He opens the package and quietly asks Johnny to get Carly and Sonny out of the building. Carly protests, but Sonny says, Now is not the time to argue. Do this for Michael." Johnny manages to get them out of the building. Minutes later, Jason enters, and Sonny tells him he is holding a bomb that needs diffusing. Sonny talks Jason through diffusing the bomb. The 'present' came from someone in Sorel's organization.
Jason says, "Sorel is on death row."
"You need to dismantle his organization one by one."
"I can cripple it, but it will be challenging to take down his entire network."
"Get it done."
"I will be gone for a while. I'll need to leave town to create deniability. I can leave by tonight or tomorrow."
4/21-30/2001
Jason watches as Elizabeth shuts Lucky down again.
Jason asks Elizabeth if she is okay, and she nods. "Let's go for a ride; I want to talk to you." She gets behind him on his bike, and they take the Cliff Road to the edge of nowhere. She gets off, removes her helmet, and brushes her hand through her hair. Jason holds out his hand and helps her across a small bridge. He stands behind her, wrapping his arms around her. She leans back against him.
"Elizabeth, I need to leave Port Charles for a while. There is something real between us. It doesn't matter why it started; we have to decide what to do with it. I don't like how Lucky hurts you. I want to hear you laugh and smile the way you do when you are free. I want to show you that light is different in Italy. Will you come with me?"
She turns to face him, "To Italy? Seriously?"
"If you want. I have some business to address, but then we can go anywhere. I'll walk away if you change your mind or get sick of me."
She hesitates briefly and says, "Yes. I need to pack a few things."
"Elizabeth, whatever you need, we can get along the way."
"I need three things from the studio." They stop off, and Elizabeth collects her passport, the red glass, and the jacket Jason gave her for Christmas in 1999. Before they ride away, she says, "When we return, I want a full tour of that estate."
They arrive in Manhattan, and Jason rents a room. "Are you hungry?" She nods, and they get on the bike; he takes her to an Italian restaurant Sonny recommended. They return to the hotel. While she is in the bathroom, he calls Sonny. "Yeah, I'm in the city. I'll start here before going to the next city. Don't tell Carly anything until I'm out of the country. I'll be in touch." Elizabeth exits the bathroom. He asks, do you want to call your family?"
"I'll call my dad. Can I call Emily? She would want to know."
Sure, you can call your dad and Emily. You can even tell her you're with me, though for your safety, Lucky shouldn't know."
Elizabeth leaves a message for her father, promising to call later and explain. She reaches Emily. "Em, it's Elizabeth, I'm leaving town with Jason. I don't know when I'll return. No, please don't tell Lucky. Don't mention it to Nikolas either; he may tell Lucky. I'll find a way to contact you when I can. Do you want to talk to Jason?" Elizabeth hands the phone to Jason.
"Em, Emily, calm down. I'm fine; Elizabeth is safe. Keep an eye on Lucky. He is unstable. If you ever feel in danger, go to Sonny. I love you."
Jason says, "We have until tomorrow before my business here is concluded. They hastily undress each other; fruitfully, they make love.
As they lie in each other's arms, Elizabeth asks, "Am I allowed to ask a few questions?"
"Within reason."
"What's next? I assume this has to do business with Sonny."
"Yes, tomorrow I need to take care of some things." He hands her a credit card with her name on it. Elizabeth sits up with the sheet wrapped around her breasts. She looks at him quizically, "Jason, how long have you had a card in my name?"
"Since last month. I always hoped to take you away for a trip and wanted you to have access to things in case we got separated, or something happened to me. Tomorrow I need you to take care of some errands. Buy what you need for two weeks in the US, and we'll shop for clothes when we travel abroad. Can you purchase two laptops with this card and ask for these specifications?" He hands her a pre-paid card and a list of instructions.
Elizabeth laughs, "Were you this sure I'd say yes?"
"No, if you said no, I'd take care of everything for one. I trust you, Elizabeth. I want you to trust me." Her heart is racing, and Elizabeth says he can trust her.

After breakfast, Jason drops her off at a local mall. "Please take care of your errands and get a cab back to the hotel. No questions asked, please."
While Elizabeth shops, Jason meets with his sources. He shakes their hands and says, "Make it happen."
Elizabeth arrives at the hotel with packages. Jason helps her inside and kisses her. He throws the bags on the bed. He checks the laptops and hands her one. "Since when did you become an expert in computers?"
"I picked up a few things while I was away. Besides, they set up everything I requested. Encrypted emails, firewalls, and the works."
The following morning, Jason rents a car under an assumed name. They load up the car and drive to Philidelphia. As they drive away, Elizabeth asks about his bike. He says someone will pick it up and return it to Port Charles. They spend two days in Philidelphia, and Jason finds out who sent the Birthday Bomb to Sonny. He places a call and asks, "Sit on the guy for a week. Find out who he meets with. Don't make a move unless he does. When he is alone, grab him and wrap him up in a present for Mr. Corothinos. Place a call when it's time." Jason places a second call, "Johnny, can you get someone to Philly to drive a car back to New York? It's not under my name and needs to be returned. I'll leave the keys at the drop site."
Jason curls up next to Elizabeth, kisses her neck, and says, "How would you like to fly to Amsterdam for a few days before going to Italy?"
"Does that mean your business is finished?"
"Yes, for now."
