I do not own any of the Star Wars and DC characters and ideas represented in this work.
Luke walked with Diana and Bruce through the sidewalk as casually as possible. Though it was night making it easier for them to be seen less, the constant patrols of Thanagarians didn't help. They walked by a window in a building that was playing a Thanagarian video broadcast, something that reminded Luke of the same type of propaganda the Empire would usually employ.
"We are here to serve the people of Earth," the Thanagarian said in a peaceful voice, "We serve the people by making certain that you do what is in your best interest. What is in your best interest is to do as we say." The broadcaster said the last part in a passive demanding tone. "Only by obeying us can we serve you."
This message was playing over and over again throughout the city. Luke ignored the Thanagarian propaganda as they made their way out of the city. Three of them paused as they took notice of two Thanagarians ruffing up a defenseless couple.
"Your identification," the soldier coldly demanded.
One of the soldiers took the woman's purse by force for a closer inspection. The man next to her, likely her husband, went to protect his wife from the soldier and yelled out, "Hey, leave her alone!"
The soldier who took the purse swatted the man away like a bug to the sidewalk's ground. Luke felt Diana wanted to do something, however, Bruce grabbed her by the arm and warned out, "Diana, No."
Diana looking very frustrated that she won't do anything about it, "You would stand here and do nothing?"
Bruce sharply replied, "We can't risk a confrontation here."
While they both stared at each other over the dilemma, Luke took note of the alleyway behind the backs of the Thanagrians which also had a trash can at the end. Luke came up with a little idea to have the best of both worlds.
"Wait," Luke stepped into the raven-haired couple, "Who said we can't do both?" Luke ended with a smirk.
Both of them raised an eyebrow at Luke's comment. Luke looked around to make sure no one was paying attention around them. When the coast was clear, while keeping it inconspicuous he waved his hand in the direction of the trash can. The trash can lifted off the ground and flew further into the alleyway, making a loud crash. The two soldiers heard the disturbance as they took their attention to the alleyway. Both of them looked at each other and nodded, the one with the purse dropped it as they made their way to investigate the alleyway.
Bruce and Diana looked back at Luke with surprised expressions, Bruce's was more irritated. Luke with a grin replied their looks with a "See?"
Diana let out a thankful sigh, "Thank you, Luke," then made her way to check on the couple. Luke followed her as well with Bruce behind, still irritated.
The man of the couple was kneeling with his wife, helping her pick up the contents of her purse that the soldier lazily dropped. Diana went to the couple and concernly asked, "You two alright?"
Both of them looked at each other and nodded, the wife responded, "Yeah, I think we're fine."
Luke went beside Diana also wanting to check on them, he let out a relieved sigh, "That's a relief." He then looked around for any Thanagarians and stepped closer to the couple, "Listen it's kinda dangerous out here, you two should head home till things calm down," Luke suggested to the couple.
The couple looked back to Luke, the man replied, "Yeah, you're probably right, thanks for your concern."
Diana said, "No problem," Luke responded, "Anytime."
The couple got up and made their way out of the streets. Luke looked back to Diana and Bruce who went beside them. Luke thought at this rate, they'd get caught in no time. Even when he and Han were in Stormtrooper armor onboard the Death Star, it didn't take the Imperials long to look through them. They needed a faster way out, "I don't think we can keep this up for long, they'll eventually find us if don't find a faster way to Gotham City."
Bruce nodded to Luke's concern, "Agreed."
Diana looked in between them, "Any ideas."
And just like if the Force answered her question, someone hailed a taxi next to them. There they spotted a parked taxi on the edge of the street while the other drove off with its new passenger. While Luke did know planets with large cities had taxi services, he doubted this planet would take the Credits he had. He looked to Diana and Bruce, "You guys have any money?"
Diana shook her head, Luke and Diana looked over to Bruce. Bruce jokingly answered in a sarcastic tone, "Sorry, left the Bat-card in another suit."
Luke knew that Bruce meant he had no money as well, but he wasn't sure if Bruce was serious about the Bat-card part. Luke sighed, while not the only option, it's the best sort of transportation that won't get attention like a public train. He'll have to mind trick the driver. Luke didn't like mind tricking people who had no intentions of hurting him and had nothing to do with his situation. But Luke also knows that they can't get caught again.
"Alright," Luke spoke, "I have a way, but I only do it sparingly and when the situation calls for it."
Both of them looked at Luke, wondering what he was planning to do, "And exactly what that might be?" Bruce asked with.
Luke breathed in and out to let the Force flow through him and replied, "Just follow my lead," then proceeded to make his way to the parked taxi. Diana and Bruce looked at each other and then followed Luke.
Luke went up to the parked taxi at the front passenger side, he noticed the cab driver was eating a piece of food. Luke gently tapped on the window's glass to get the driver's attention. The driver stopped eating his food with a grunt, and then let the window down, "Can I help you?"
Luke wanted to at least ask the driver first before using the trick. "Excuse but I'm wondering if you can take us to Gotham City, we'll pay extra of course." He looked back to the disguised superhero duo, Bruce nodded that he'd pay the cab driver extra for taking them there.
The cab driver scoffed at the request, "Gotham? Sorry bud, but I'm only in Metropolis city limits, company rules."
Luke politely asked once more time, "I understand, but we can still pay extra and talk to your supervisor real quick."
The cab driver shook his head, "Sorry, no can do, now if you don't need a ride within city limits, then go away." The cab driver went back to his meal.
Luke sighed as his way wasn't working, he focused on the Force, and went through his mind what to command, "Wait a second, sir."
The cab driver dropped his food onto his lap and looked at Luke with an annoyed expression, "I thought I said to get lost."
Luke with a gesture said his command, "You will take us to Gotham City."
The driver's eyes widened and replied his command back with a monotone voice, "I will take you to Gotham City." The driver started his cab and unlocked the doors for the trio to get in.
Diana was surprised that Luke did that while Bruce's eyes narrowed to Luke, he could already feel the man's paranoia for Luke. "When you explained your powers, you never said you could do that."
Luke honestly forgot to tell them that when they were asking about the Force. "I'm sorry," Luke apologized, "I forgot to mention that, don't worry it only works on the weak-minded."
Bruce accusingly replied, "Seems like a big thing to gloss over."
Diana stepped into the conversation, "Bruce," she pleaded "He had plenty of times to betray us."
Bruce let a noticeable huff at Diana then turned towards Luke, "Just don't do that to us, understood?"
Luke nodded to Bruce's demanding request, "I only use it if it's absolutely necessary."
Luke and Bruce stared at each other for a couple of seconds before Diana broke the tension, "We probably should get going."
Luke looked at her, "Right," then went to open the back door to sit in a seat. Luke sat on the right side with a window, Diana sat in the middle to keep Bruce from killing the Jedi, and then Bruce sat on the left passenger side. The driver then drove out of the parking spot and made his way to the streets. Luke on his side viewed the window next to him, he could still see Thanagarians with their tanks patrolling the streets for them. He can only hope they didn't set up checkpoints.
He looked to the duo next to them, "You guys don't happen to know if we can go to some back roads? I'm worried that we'll run across to a checkpoint." Luke voiced his concerns to them.
Diana looked at Bruce on the left who might be knowledgeable about the route to Gotham, "It'll take longer but It might be worth the wait."
Luke nodded, "Alright," he then asked the driver who was busy looking on the road, "Excuse me but I'm wondering if you can take us to a back road route that can still take us to Gotham."
The driver looked back at Luke from the mirror, "No problem," replied as almost if he didn't realize he was mind-tricked.
Luke went further to the seat to get comfortable. He remembered that Bruce said earlier that it would take somewhere around 30 miles from here to Gotham, Luke asked Bruce, "How long do you think we'll be there?"
Bruce gave some thought before replying, "Since we're taking a detour maybe 40-ish minutes."
Luke nodded to Bruce's prediction, "If you two don't mind," Luke asked, "I'm gonna meditate until we get there."
Diana replied, "Of course, we'll wake you up when something happens." Bruce didn't say anything and stared at his window, still not liking the Jedi's presence.
With them ok with it, Luke crisscrossed his legs despite the lack of room in the back seat. He then relaxed his thoughts and started to clear his mind as the meditative trance took hold of him. The only thing he remembered before waking up in Gotham was the car's engine humming.
To Luke it felt cold, really cold. In the Force that is, it didn't seem right to him. At some point in his late meditation, Luke felt a portion of the Dark side around him. The emotions he felt through the environment during his meditation were like any other emotion you would feel in larger cities with crime. Greed, lust, suffering, begging, hatred, and distrust. Those emotions were naturally occurring in larger cities, especially in the lower levels of Coruscant. But it felt wrong, it didn't feel natural, it felt manufactured.
Somewhere in the maelstrom of dark energies was something old, it was waiting in the abyss. He couldn't figure out if that was the source or a byproduct of the emotion emitting from it's inhabitants. But Luke knew one thing for certain, the Force abhorred whatever lay in that darkness. It was an abomination, something that went completely against what the Force stands for.
Luke woke up from his unpleasant meditation and found himself still in the cab. He looked over to his left and still saw Diana and Bruce in their seats. Bruce still looking through his side of the window and Diana was asleep. The car hit a bump and knocked her out of her rest. Luke reeling in what he felt earlier noticed the direction of the source through the window. He saw the car was going through a forest, but while the trees mostly blocked the view, he could tell there was a city beyond.
It was no doubt Gotham City Bruce mentioned earlier. It was still night with the skyscrapers lit up like lighthouses. He was certain that the source of bad emotions and eeriness was coming from the city, whether it was the location or the people, he couldn't say for sure. That dark abyss is somewhere in that city beyond the trees. Somewhere only the Force knew. Luke knows that he'll have to investigate it at some point after the Thanagarians are dealt with. Something the League will have to know about for sure.
Luke's concerns were stopped when the cab was pulling up to some kinda estate. The property itself was surrounded by a lavish metal fence. In the property itself was a large mansion on the edge of a cliff. Luke looked over to Bruce, he didn't remember telling the cab driver to come here.
Bruce noticed Luke and Diana had woken up, "I told the driver the directions to my house when you too were out."
Luke nodded to Bruce's explanation. "Bruce, you don't mind if you pay him a good amount, I already feel bad for doing this to him." Luke voiced his mind to Bruce, feeling guilty of using the Force to mind trick a random person in their mess.
Bruce replied, "Sure," then looked back at his window. The cab stopped at what was the entrance of the estate. All three got out of the cab while Bruce went to the driver's side. "If you don't mind, can you wait here while we can your money?"
"Sure thing," the cab driver casually replied.
Bruce went up to the side of the concrete part of the fence that had an intercom, "Alfred, it's Bruce, we took a cab to get here, can you get some cash for the gentlemen?"
An old voice responded with an accent that reminded Luke of an Imperial officer who would have, "Of course, Master Bruce."
The gates to the estate opened when the intercom went out. The trio entered through the gate and walked to the first steps of the mansion's steps. The mansion's door opened and it showed an elderly balding man with a suit behind it. "Good evening, Master Bruce, I have the money ready with me."
Bruce stepped forward, "Alfred this is Luke Skywalker, he helped us get away from the Thanagarians," he turned to Luke, "Luke this is Alfred Pennyworth, my butler."
Luke nodded, "It's a pleasure Mr. Pennyworth."
Alfred kindly responded, "Likewise Master Skywalker, though I would prefer you would call me just Alfred."
Luke smirks at the overpolite gentlemen, "Of course, Alfred."
Bruce turned back to his butler, "Alfred, more of the League should be here soon."
"Very well, Master Bruce."
Alfred went out of the doorway to pay the cab driver, the trio entered into Bruce's mansion. Luke thought the mansion was very nice, with heirloom furniture, a huge dining hall, exquisite paintings, and a lot of filled bookshelves. Bruce guided Luke and Diana to a grandfather clock, where he opened the piece of glass, and moved the rod. The entire clock shifted to the right revealing a hidden passageway. Bruce entered with Diana and Luke behind him. They went through the passageway and entered a giant cavern.
The cavern had multiple things in it, walkways, equipment storages, a black land vehicle on the side, a display case showing colorful suits, and a large computer at the end of the cavern. Bruce and Diana made their way to the computer as Luke silently observed the cavern. He took note one part of the cave had some sort of trophy section. What caught his attention was a giant bronze circular slab that might've been a form of currency and a giant replica of some reptile.
Those weren't the only things Luke discovered, he felt through the Force that this place was very gloomy. He can tell in the force that the cavern was stained with sorrow, doubt, pity, and anger. Though Luke wasn't alarmed since he knew Bruce wasn't some darksider. Still, he wondered why the man was in a place drenched in it and whether he was the cause of it.
Luke cut his observations later as he remembered he still wanted to fix his comlink to get in contact with Artoo. He walked over to the large computer where the other two were. Bruce was sitting in a chair at the controls while Diana was behind him.
"Bruce," Luke caught the two's attention, "You have an impressive place here, do you think you have any spare parts I can use to fix my communicator?"
Bruce rubbed his chin, "Maybe, I do have some parts over there," he gestured his head to his right. "You think you'll be able to fix it? I don't know if your tech will be compatible with mine."
Luke sighed, "The worst-case scenario is that it's fully fried, and I have to find another way to get back to my friend."
Bruce nodded, "Follow me," Bruce got up with Diana and guided Luke to what looked like the equipment section of his lair. From mynock-shaped sharp objects to spare parts.
Luke went to the parts area and ruffled where he might need to fix his comlink. Thankfully, when he checked what broke earlier it was just one wire that was torn. He found a leftover radio box and took it apart for a specific set of wires. If Earth knew the fundamentals of electricity then it shouldn't be a problem. Going throw trial and error, he managed to find the right one to fix his comlink.
He put back the comlink and looked back at Bruce and Diana, "Well, here goes nothing."
"Claw-7, do you have a visual of the target?" Claw-7 was patrolling his section of the Canyon walls. They were assigned for a search and destroy mission several hours ago for a rogue AI sentient ship. However, they're coming up empty-handed now. He used the ship's searchlight to help him see. He noticed the mouth of a cave, though he just searched the area around it. "No ship that size could make it through that cave," he thought. When he finished his search he reported back to his wing leader, "Nothing in my sector, Claw-9."
"Copy, head to sector 2, we might have picked up a trail," Claw-9 ordered.
"Copy."
Claw-7 then made his way out of his section of the Canyon and back to where he was ordered to help continue the search.
"That was a close one," R2 thought in his processor. Since he detected the Hawkmen coming to find him in the Canyon, he managed to put the X-Wing in a cave that was just able to hide the ship. They have been searching for him since after the chase though he is still hiding his signal from their trackers. The problem wasn't leaving the Canyon, the problem was where to go. His master was still with the Thanagarians and R2 has no idea where he could be. That was when R2's question about his master's safety was answered.
"Artoo? You there? Artoo?," R2's comlink opened with Luke's voice.
"He's Alive He's Alive!" R2 excitingly said in his processor.
R2 sang an assortment of beeps and whistles to show he was there and was relieved that his master was ok.
"Oh good to hear, did the Thanagarians capture you?" His master asked about R2's situation
R2 replied with beeps saying that he managed to escape the Hawkmen and jammed their signals from finding him.
"Good job buddy," that line made R2's circuits spark with joy, "Listen I'm with a group called the Justice League, I helped them escape and they said they can help us repair our ship." The last part made R2 happy that they could get their ship fixed.
"But the Thanagarians are up to something no good, I agreed to help, you in?"
R2 replied with excited beeps saying he wanted to kick those Hawkmen in the wings.
"That's my Artoo!" A proud Skywalker replied to his Astromech's answer, "Can you track my location without being caught?"
R2 calculated the possibility of them catching him if he were to be seen. His piloting and his jamming of their signal made R2 think he could reach Luke.
R2 responded with a confident beep to Luke.
"Alright buddy, be careful," Luke warned his companion, "Let me know when you get close."
R2 whistled a beep to Luke to show his understanding. R2 didn't waste any time and fired up the X-Wing. The ship's engines roared to life as R2 scanned for any of the Thanagarians around. He found them that they were momentarily at the other side of the Canyon. With his window of opportunity to reach Luke, he carefully glided the X-Wing out of the cave. He managed to do so and took off from the Canyon to Luke's direction, keeping a low profile on the ground.
Luke was relieved that one of his longest friends was alive and well, he turned off the communicator and turned to the duo that was watching his conversation. "He's ok and he said he's coming here. Don't worry he said he's managed to jam their signals from tracking him."
Bruce nodded as Diana stepped to ask Luke a question, "The person who you were talking to on that communicator, you understood him?"
Luke chuckled at her question, "A lot of people don't understand binary unless you're used to working with Astromech droids like I do." Luke explained though he may have further confused Diana and made Bruce raise an eyebrow at his explanation. He realized they probably hadn't ever seen or heard an Astromech droid before. "Oh right, he's a Droid, about this tall," he raised his hand to show Artoo's approximate height. He looked at Diana, "You'll like him," and looked over to Bruce, "And don't worry about him telling anyone about you guys, he can keep a secret."
Diana smiled at Luke, Bruce replied, "Right," though he could tell he wasn't 100% convinced.
Their conversation about Artoo ended when Alfred stepped inside the cave's entrance with Clark and J'onn, "You guests are here, Master Bruce."
"Thank you, Alfred," Bruce replied to his butler as Alfred went to exit for his duties. Clark and J'onn made their way to the staircase and to the large computer to meet the trio.
"Guessing you guys had no complications?" Clark asked his friends.
"For the most part, no," Diana responded.
Bruce sat down on his chair at the computer, "Luke managed to fix the communicator to contact his friend." Bruce caught up with Clark and J'onn on the current situation.
Clark looked over to Luke with concern, "Is he fine?"
Luke smiled, "He is thankfully, the ship too, he's gonna come over here. He said he's been jamming their signal ever since he escaped that cruiser."
Clark nodded, "Glad to hear."
30 minutes passed after Clark and J'onn got to the cave. They all huddled around the bat computer, Luke did thought that was a weird name and looked over the several broadcasts the Thanagarians were making. They were all still broadcasting Thanagarian propaganda throughout the planet. Whatever they're planning, they're trying to get planet's attention to somewhere else.
Luke's comlink buzzed with R2's beep, telling Luke he was close now, "Great, Buddy give me a moment."
Luke looked back at Bruce, "Is there anywhere he can land the ship?"
Bruce replied, "Depends, can it fit through that waterfall?" Bruce pointed to the section of the cavern that had a waterfall. Next to it was a landing platform with a black ship.
Luke looked back at Bruce, "It should," Bruce nodded so that Luke could tell his friend. "Alright Artoo, when you get to my location, there's gonna be a mansion on top of a cliff. There's a waterfall next to it, go through it don't worry there's a cave in it and a platform you can land on. Got it?" Luke instructed Artoo.
Artoo replied with an understood beep. Luke made his way to the platform as he could hear the X-Wing's engine roar close. The X-Wing carefully glided out of the waterfall and onto the platform with his landing gear deployed. Once on the platform, Luke went over to the X-Wing. Artoo with uncontrollable excitement undocked himself from the ship and thrusted out of the X-wing with his rockets. He landed and wheeled over to Luke as fast as he could. Luke hugged Artoo as the Astromech was shaking with his legs and beeping on how he missed Luke.
Luke chuckled at his friend, "It's good to see you too again, Artoo." Artoo whistled a beep agreeing, Luke placed his forehead onto Artoo's dome where his photoreceptor eye was, showing a strong connection the Jedi and the Astromech have.
Luke got up and noticed the League were staring in awe at how much he missed his friend, and also they didn't expect his friend to look like a trashcan. Luke turned around and introduced Artoo to the League, "Artoo, this is the Justice League, I helped them escape from the Thanagarians." He gestured his hand from the heroes to Artoo, "Justice League, this is R2-D2, we've been through a lot in the years I have been with him."
Artoo let a greeting beep to the heroes, though none of them understood him. Luke chuckled at the language barrier, "He said it's a pleasure to meet you all."
"Nice to meet you," J'onn greetly said.
Clark nodded, "Same," while Bruce and Diana politely kept it to themselves.
Luke smiled but changed it back to a serious look, "We probably should get back on topic on the Thanagarians."
The League nodded to Luke's comment on getting back on the main situation. They headed towards back to the computer, "Come on, Artoo," Luke followed them as Artoo deployed his third leg to wheel behind Luke.
The league went to the front of the computer, Bruce going back to his seat, Clark leaning next to the computer, with Luke, Diana, and J'onn standing. With Artoo closely beside Luke. "So," Clark spoke up, "Since we're waiting for John and Wally, anyone got ideas on what the Thanagarians are really up to?"
Bruce spoke his findings, "Before we were captured, I managed to disguise myself on their command ship, Talak was on a voice call giving a report, if anything the Gordanians were nowhere near Earth."
The League nodded, and Luke stepped in to say his point of view, "When I was close to Earth, the Thanagarians hailed me to land in their ship or they'll shoot me down. They said I was in restricted Thanagar space. When I landed, Lieutenant Kragger accused me of working for the Gordanians."
Bruce continued with his own findings, "When I was onboard, the leaders Talak was reporting to said they were on a tight schedule and the Gordonians are renewing their offensive to Thanagar."
"So the Gordanians are involved just not directly," Diana explained.
Bruce nodded, "If they were jumpy at the idea of Luke being a spy, then they don't want the Gordanians to know. A military operation they're trying to keep a secret."
"Real question is," J'onn said, "What exactly are they keeping a secret?"
Luke gave some thought to his knowledge. The Thanagarians trying to keep it on the down low reminded Luke of the Empire's superweapon projects. The Empire would usually build them in reaches of space that are far from the Core or any prying eyes, The Death Star II on Endor came to mind.
Luke stepped in, "Maybe the force field generator is actually a superweapon," he got the group's attention, "In the Galaxy, some governments making superweapons would construct them in deep space so no one would know. If we think it has something to do with the Gordanians, then maybe it's to help them win the war."
Everyone in the group gave Luke's idea some thought. Alfred entered the passageway again, Wally and John behind him, "Your guests have arrived, sir."
Alfred guided both of them down the stairs, John went to the group while Wally went to look at the trophy section of the case. Bruce stated, "You're Late."
John replied with a quip, "Nice to see you too."
Wally got done noticing the reptile and Alfred went back upstairs. Wally went to the group and saw Artoo and said, "So what's with the white and blue trashcan."
Artoo offended by this, sounded off a sassy beep and deployed his taser towards Wally who pointed a finger at him. The taser shocked Wally, making him pull back his hand to his chest and comfort it. Wally let out a, "Damn!"
J'onn stepped in, "If you're done making fun of Luke's friend, we were just speculating why the Thanagarians are here."
"Luke thinks it's a superweapon," Clark informed the two of the current theory.
Luke stepped in to say his evidence, "Before the Thanagarians captured me, I got a warning from the Force saying they were doing something dangerous." He looked between the group, "I feel that they're gonna do something that can destroy the planet."
"So whatever they're building is most definitely not a shield generator," Diana said.
That was when Artoo let out beeps to Luke about his scans when flying the X-Wing. The group other than Luke understood it though, "What's he saying?" Bruce asked to Luke for a translation.
Luke paused for a second to think about Artoo's finding then back to the group. "Artoo said when he was flying, his scanners picked up the structure they were making. It's not a shield generator," Luke confirmed their theory about the Hawkmen.
John stepped in, "So if it's not a shield generator, then what is it?"
Artoo beeped out his answer, Luke translated, "He isn't for sure, but he said it was like some kind of Hyperspace Anchor." The group raised an eyebrow at Luke after translating Artoo for them.
Luke's sense flared up as he realized someone was in the caven with them. He could feel them, they weren't there to hurt them, but Luke didn't know who. He turned his head in the direction of their new guest, "We're not alone."
The group saw his reaction and turned in the direction where he was facing. The spot they were looking at was a dark hallway made inside the cave's walls. The figure stepped into the light, revealing a female Thanagarian warrior. Luke was confused, the woman wasn't attacking nor was the League. Though he can feel their anger from the Force. He remembered Diana telling him back on the ship that one of the League members, Shayera Hol, was a Thanagarian spy who was sent by Thanagar when the League started. He safely assumed this was the same Shayera Hol.
He noticed all the members tensed up, ready for a fight. Clark stepped up taking off his glasses, "You've got a lot of nerve, showing up here."
Diana stepped closer to Shayera, "We should thank you, It saves us having to hunt you down." She said in a threatening manner. J'onn, Diana, Wally, and Clark got closer to her. He wasn't sure what to do. He could sense she wasn't there for a fight, but he felt something similar. The League on the other hand might not think things through. He felt she was torn between two worlds, he felt she had regret. He could see the conflict in her.
"I didn't come to fight," Shayera explained herself, "I came to help." Luke believed her from the Force. He could feel she wanted to put something right, that she made a mistake and is now rectifying it. Something he sensed in his father years ago.
"Wait," Luke intervened between the League and Shayera, using his hands to stop them. They stopped in their tracks but didn't lose their sights on Shayera. "I believe her," Luke said making some of the League look at the Jedi with disbelief, "I can feel it in her, she's here to help."
"Hawkpeople all over the planet," Wally angrily said, "Martial law, us getting chased like dogs. I don't think we can take much of her help, Luke." Wally crossed his arms.
Shayera looked at Luke, "Your friend is right, it's not a shield generator, the situation is worse than you think." She started to walk towards the group, though he could feel they wanted to attack, they were choosing not to. Shayera walked passed them, "They are building a Hyperspace bypass," she got closer to Bruce who got up from his seat, "When it's activated, it'll destroy the planet and everything on it."
She took a small holo disk from her hip and gave it to Bruce, "Here, this has all the information on the project." She held the disk towards Bruce. Bruce on the other hand was staring daggers into Shayera, she pleaded to him, "Believe me, I didn't know the magnitude of Talak's plans."
From the start of the confrontation, Shayera only stated the truth. Luke believed her all the way through, but he doesn't know if he can fully trust her. He can feel they all are still doubtful of her intentions but also know she was saying something if she came here to warn them or if she was just suicidal.
Bruce still looking at Shayera took the disk from her hand. "We'll check it out," he said as he turned around. He then coldly ended the conversation, "There's the door."
He made his way to the computer as well with the other League members, Luke with Artoo behind him followed them. They passed Shayera before she stopped to him to talk. "Wait, Skywalker," Luke turned around as Artoo stopped with him. Shayera went up to him with an apologetic look. "I know it might mean nothing to them or you right now, but I'm sorry that you were tangled in this mess."
Luke started to choose his words carefully, he could say he was angry at her for being involved in this, he could say she was an untrusting person who was wrong to betray her friends like that. He could spew negativity that would make her rethink her life. However, he also knows she was doing the right thing, that she's risking herself against her people to help her friends save Earth. Despite their scornful tastes for her now, she wanted to make amends.
Luke knowing what to say, placed his arm on Shayera's shoulder, he could tell she was expecting something unpleasant, but that is not what she got. "I believe you Shayera." Luke calmly said to her.
Shayera herself was stunned and didn't know what to say. Luke wanted to ask her a question that bothered him. "Shayera," she snapped her focus back, "Why? Why are the Thanagarians doing this?"
Shayera looked down to give some thought and back up to Luke to answer, "It's the Gordanians. Thanagar has been at war for some long now," she stated. "The Gordanians are pushing towards Thanagar soon, Talak and the leaders think making the bypass would cut through their defenses and attacking their world would end the war." Shayera paused before continuing, "But they all think destroying Earth is a necessity to win the war."
Luke listened to her explanation and asked a follow-up question, "Do you think it's worth it?"
Shayera quickly responded with an answer she knew, "No, it's not. There's another way, there has to be."
Luke nodded to her answer, she was telling the truth to him. He wanted to know why would the Thanagarians do this, why go through the trouble and sacrifice of an entire planet. It didn't improve his opinion of the Thanagarians anyway, but he now knows their situation.
"Thank you," Luke said to Shayera, who he could tell was a little confused. "I just wanted to know why."
Luke then noticed John was the only League member who didn't head back to the computer. He was staring holes into the back of her head. He was angry like the others, but Luke could feel he was more distraught than any of the League. Luke remembered when discussing the betrayal back in the store, how Lantern seemed like he lost someone he dearly loved. He did lose someone, just not how Luke first imagined.
He could tell John wanted to say something personal to her, though not giving the sign to Luke intentionally. Luke thinking they should talk alone, left Shayera with John looking at her back. Artoo closely followed Luke back to the computer. He tried to not listen to the conversation, but he noticed that Shayera gave John something and flew up out of the cave with her wings. John only stared at her exit.
While Bruce was at the computer, Luke started to think. The Thanagarians were so desperate to end the war and protect their people that they would sacrifice an entire planet to do so. He felt uncomfortable about the idea despite going through a war himself. He understood the sacrifices one has to make in a war, but this wasn't a sacrifice, it was murder plain and simple.
Luke then thought of all of the examples he knew of people being desperate to sacrifice their morals and even people. The Old Jedi were desperate for an army during the start of the Clone Wars so they accepted the Clone Army from Kamino. They didn't question the morality of a Clone army itself. Beings born into a sterile environment, with no family other than themselves. Being trained and deployed into a war they did not choose to be in. Slavery, some might call it, but the Old Jedi didn't call it that though. They paid the price of sacrificing their own morals when it metaphorically and literally blew up in their faces.
He then remembered the Empire and them being so desperate to end the Rebellion that they were willing to sacrifice entire star systems to keep the Galaxy under their grip. Luke doubted that the Empire had any morals to begin with. It was just a tool for Sidious to play with, feeding him suffering and agony by the Empire's actions.
The Thanagarians though were a group of people, an entire race. They had their own culture and practices. They weren't slavers or dark side users from Luke's encounters with them. They were so desperate for a war that they would destroy a planet that would have no chance against them. If the Thanagarians had honor in their culture, then they would be sacrificing that too.
Shayera was piloting her ship back to the command ship. She got done by talking to her friends (if they would call the same for her) about Talak's plot. She pleaded with them to believe her, they might not for her but also suspected Talak was up to something. She can only hope they can figure out a way to destroy the bypass before it starts. They are the Justice League after all.
There was one thing that was stuck in her mind while she was coming close to the ship. Out of everyone who wasn't mad and didn't want to kill her was the one pilot, Luke Skywalker. He was the only one there who showed her compassion, though she thinks she doesn't deserve to have any at the moment. She betrayed their trust and she's starting to accept that. But still, it bothered her that a stranger believed her and wasn't giving her looks like he wanted to kill her.
She paused the thoughts as she landed her ship in one of the hangar bays. The ramp opened as she walked out, she was greeted by none other than Lieutenant Kragger. Kragger himself was grinning like he heard a joke.
"Welcome back, Lieutenant Hol," Kragger greeted her though he was standing in front of her.
"You're in my way," Shayera remarked.
Kragger continued with his grinning, "Likewise, I'm sure," he turned around to guide her, "Come with me."
Shayera was starting to get tired of Kragger's crap. It's one thing she had to deal with him occasionally, but now recently he was getting into her business like a snake. He's been driving a wedge between her and Hro ever since the operation started. She wasn't gonna take it anymore.
"I don't take orders from-," Shayera was boldly gonna stand her ground before two guards landed beside her. Both have weapons at the ready.
She feared this would happen, though she couldn't fight them, or at least not yet. She wanted to play dumb first. "I don't understand, Kragger. What's going on?"
Kragger smirked back at her, "Oh that act won't get you anywhere Lieutenant Hol, we've both know that little "inspection" on the bypass generator was a lie." Kragger stepped close to confront her obvious lie.
Shayera trying to play innocent barked back, "Like you got proof."
Kragger kept smiling at her, "Oh you'll see, Lieutenant." Kragger gestured to the guards, one of them searched her while the other took her helmet off. Then the other placed cuffs on her, where she won't be able to do anything. Kragger ordered the guards, "Take her to Commander Talak, I'm sure he'll love to see it himself."
"Bastard," Shayera growled as one of the guards made her move to the bridge, Kragger following behind her.
The guards took her to the bridge, she had her head down in defeat all the way there. When entering the bridge, Talak had just finished talking to Paran. When close to Talak, the guards threw Shayera to Talak's feet carelessly. Shayera grunted as she fell to her knees, Talak went to pick her up. She can tell Talak wanted answers, "What do you think you're doing?"
Kragger came into the bridge and went to Talak, while Talak himself was holding the sill-bound Shayera. Kragger went to Talak to answer his actions, "I'm sorry, Sir. She's guilty of high treason, espionage, and consorting with the enemy."
Talak stared at Kragger in utter shock and looked back at Shayera. She didn't say anything as she was too ashamed of herself.
Kragger went to the control console and entered a video disk into the computer. The screen went alive as it showed Shayera's true whereabouts to Talak. It was a recording of Shayera talking to the Justice with Luke Skywalker. It was Shayera explaining to the Justice League their plan to build the hyperspace bypass.
Talak looked back at Kragger, "Where did you get this?"
Kragger smirked again, grabbed Shayera's Thanagarian symbol in her chest plate, and took it out. Revealing a hidden hologram recorder. Shayera contorted her face into anger at Kragger.
Kragger looked at Talak to answer him, "From the hologram I planted on her." Kragger turned to the screen to gesture to his commander to look at it, "Wait, it gets better."
The screen then showed Shayera giving John Stewart his power ring back. Talak looked at it with a face that didn't show any emotions anymore.
Shayera stared at the floor, not wanting to make eye contact with him. She loved Hro, but the same man she fell in love years ago was fading away. He was becoming obsessed with getting back at the Gordanians that he was something completely different.
Kragger and Talak looked at Shayera, she didn't pay anyone attention other than her Talak. Shayera looked at Hro, she wanted to say something, to explain herself why. Maybe they could both let it go if he would just listen to her voice. "Hro…"
Talak coldly cut her off before she could finish, "Get her out of my sight."
Shayera didn't even plead back to him. She didn't struggle when the guards took her out of the control room. She didn't yell out to Kragger that she would cut his head off the next chance she got. She let the guards drag him through the ship like a ragdoll with her thoughts to keep her company. The guards put her in through a force field cell unit and left her behind a spiked security door. She was alone, just left to collect herself in her thoughts. She wasn't a Thanagarian anymore and she wasn't part of the League either. The only thing she can hope is that her former friends can stop Hro Talak.
The bat computer showed a simulation of the planet being warped and disfigured as the hyperspace bypass was activated. Something that would be the next step for the Thanagarians to win their war, just at the cost of billions of voices crying out in terror and being suddenly silenced.
"Ingenious," Bruce commented. Luke wasn't sure if he meant the technology or how someone could perform such a crime.
"Yeah, I'm impressed," Clark sarcastically said as he took off his glasses. "Let's go wreck it."
"How? It's behind a forcefield." John stated.
Bruce then voiced his answer to John, "A forcefield controlled from the command ship." Bruce presses several keys on his computer to show the simulated ship's appearance. It showed at the bottom of the hull was a section of the cruiser that housed the forcefield control generator.
"Go shut it down," Bruce said his plan, "I'll take care of the generator."
Wally remarked on Bruce's plan, "That thing's the size of a city. What are young going to do, throw a batarang at it?"
Bruce replied, "Something like that."
Artoo beeped with a remark to Luke on why Bruce would call a weapon a Batarang. Luke shrugged to Artoo. Then suddenly Luke got a warning from the Force. He reached out and sensed multiple people willing to kill them. He noticed he was coming from above, close to the mansion. "Bruce," Luke stepped forward as everyone including the Dark Knight looked over to the Jedi, "We're gonna have company soon."
A loud crash echoed throughout the cave as the entrance from the mansion to the lair was flooded in by Thanagarian soldiers led by Kragger. All of them glided through the air as most of them entered the cave, "Spread out," Kragger ordered.
Kragger landed with a pair of soldiers carrying heavy blaster canons. "They're hiding here somewhere," he voiced his suspension as his strike team started their search. A group of six were in a group looking in the trophy section, and one of them spotted a weirdly white shape trashcan. One of them got interested in it and poked it with his axe.
When the axe gently touched it, the machine glowed alive as it started to shriek to the Thanagarians. It started to shake its body and spin its head. The compartments had started to open up, revealing multiple tools and devices to confuse the Hawkmen. It then started to spew out thick white smoke that consumed the soldiers. None of them could see what was going on while some coughed at the smoke.
Before any of them could properly react, they all heard a pair of boots land gently in the middle of them. There they heard the shriek of a green beam of energy appearing from the middle. While some caught wind of this and let out one or two bolts from their weapons, they were quickly sent back to their shooters by the beam.
The rest tried to storm the figure with their melee weapons, though not successful. Two of them were pushed back by an unseen force and were knocked out by colliding with the cave's walls. The last two managed to reach their opponent with their weapons raised but were blocked. One soldier had his leg grazed, dropping his weapon as he held the area of the wound. The last soldier got his weapon knocked out of his hand and got his arm sliced, doing the same as the other one.
After the last soldier dropped in pain, the smoke cleared revealing the figure. It shows Luke Skywalker, now dressed in his all-black Jedi outfit. Wearing black boots, black pants, a belt with a large silver buckle, and a black long-sleeve tunic, with his lone glove. He went to the defensive position as he saw the Thanagarians look at him.
"Skywalker!" Kragger accused, "Shoot him!" Before the soldiers can follow his command, they are struck by an energy beam.
"You forgot the rest of us?" the figure who shot the soldiers came out of the dark revealing Green Lantern.
Kragger only focused on Skywalker and took flight to engage the Jedi while the other soldiers went to attack the Lantern. They were however ambushed by the rest of the League. Wonder Woman lassoed one soldier and threw him to Martian Manhunter, J'onn knocked out the flying Hawkmen with just his arm raised. Flash used his speed to dodge and engage the soldiers. Superman used his strength and flight to knock out soldiers from the air.
Kragger was then heading towards Luke like a bullet, the Jedi sidestepped the passing Lieutenant. Kragger course corrected and swung around to strike Luke with his axe. Luke blocked the attack with his lightsaber and the two exchanged blows for a few seconds. Kragger wanted to do a heavy strike and attack Luke from the side to hit his torso. Luke seeing this backfliped into the air as the axe hit nothing. Luke having the advantage of Kragger open, Force pushed the Lieutenant to crash into a trophy case.
Luke landed as he still had his lightsaber at the ready, "It's over Kragger," Luke stated to the fallen Thanagarian.
Kragger now on the ground with his axe nowhere in sight, saw a gun and picked it up to shoot Luke. Luke seeing this quickly reached out to the Force to crush the gun. The gun was torn and crushed as it exploded in front of Kragger with an icy storm. Luke saw that Kragger was frozen solid with a surprised look as the snow settled.
Luke was surprised but thankful for it. He turned to the Justice League as they were done knocking out the rest of the Thanagarians. Artoo was thankfully not hurt, hiding behind a display case. Luke followed the League out of the cave and to the mansion. They all walked down the stairs where the main hall had scattered glass around made by the Thanagrians. Alfred was calmly brooming the glass, "Mind the glass, sir."
They went by the door as Batman stopped Green Lantern and the League the plan, "I want you, Superman, and Wonder Woman to go to the command ship and shut down the force field." He turned his gaze to Luke with his R2 unit. "Still wanna do this?"
Luke looked back at Batman and confidential replied, "I'm not going to do nothing and let the Thanagarians destroy the planet, count me in."
Artoo let out an excited beep to show he wanted to go as well. Luke smirked and translated back to Batman for his friend, "And Artoo as well."
Batman nodded, "Alright then, You can go with Green Lantern and them."
"Right," Luke responded, then looked back at Artoo, "Artoo, start the ship," Artoo said a beep that he'd do it.
Batman stepped closer to Luke to give him an ear communicator. "Here you'll need this, it's a communicator," Batman explained.
Luke grabbed the communicator and placed it in his ear, "Thanks."
Both Luke and Artoo started to hurry back to the cave where the X-Wing was at. Luke stopped for a second to say something to Superman, "I'll meet you guys outside, don't worry it won't take long."
Superman nodded, "Alright Luke."
Luke continued to make his way back to the cave with Artoo.
J'onn asked about the rest of the League, "And the rest of us?"
Batman turned to J'onn, "You're going to help me retake the watchtower."
Flash heard this and argued, "It's crawling with Thanagarian soldiers, how are you planning on getting inside?"
Batman then looked outside to gesture to the League to look at, what was outside was a small Thanagarian transported ship used by Kragger's strike team. "With that," Batman answered.
Luke got into the cockpit of his X-Wing as Artoo used his rocket to boost up to the docking port. There they fired the X-Wing's engined up. The X-Wing started to hover up as the landing gear was being recalled. Luke guided the X-Wing out of the waterfall and entered outside. There he saw Green Lantern, Wonder Woman, and Superman flying up. He piloted the X-Wing behind them as they went in the direction of the Thanagarian cruiser.
Luke wasn't entirely sure how long they'd be there, but he wanted to meditate to regain focus on the Force for the upcoming fight, "Artoo, take control of the ship" he asked his Astromech, "When we're at a good distance from their ship, wake me up."
Artoo let out a couple of beeps to show he'll warn Luke to wake up when the time comes up.
Luke then started to relax his mind and body as he closed his eyes. He let the Force engulf him, to guide him for the fate of this planet. He could feel it, it was different yet he wouldn't let that stop him from doing what his duty as a Jedi, was to preserve life. And he could feel the Force will help him with that tonight.
Shayera sat on a circular seat that was built into the floor as she was stuck in the forcefield cell. Still with her head down and her eyes closed, in her thoughts since she was imprisoned for treason. She heard several buttons being pushed then the security barrier to the room that was made up of spikes retracted. She looked up to see who is it and it was none other than Hro Talak. He walked to the forcefield to look Shayera straight in the eye.
"Why Shayera?" Shayera got the courage to walk up to Hro on her side of the shield, "Why would you do this?" Talak pleaded to Shayera for an answer to her betrayal of her own people.
Shayera boldly said, "I'm trying to save lives."
Talak responded, "So am I," he leaned towards her, "Tens of billions of Thanagarians."
Shayera already knew that, she knew why Talak was doing this. She knew the torment Talak went through went he got captured by the Gordanians. He only wanted to keep their people from that. "But to sacrifice Earth for that?" she thought in her head.
Shayera questioned Talak's wicked sense of morality, "So we trade the humans' lives for our own?"
"War makes for hard choices, Lieutenant. It's them or us."
"Lieutenant," she repeated his words back in her mind. Earlier he had an outburst of her not following his orders. Stating he is her commander and she will obey him. If he only sees it that way between them and nothing else, then so be it.
"The man I fell in love with would have found another way," Shayera stated.
Talak looked at her with his eyes narrowed, "Are you talking about me, or Green Lantern?" Talak coldly accused.
Shayera, taken back by the question, dropped her head down. She didn't have an answer nor not wanting to say it.
Talak still was looking at her, "I didn't want to believe it." He started to plead to her, "Shayera, I love you. I can forgive your treason. I can forgive everything." He placed his hand onto the energy shied. The shield glowed at the area he touched as it prevented him from reaching out to Shayera. "I can make this all go away."
Talak then leaned in forward wanting his lover to answer, "Just tell me what I need to hear. It was a meaningless flirtation, you were lonely! Tell me I'm the one you love, not him!" Talak demanded Shayera to state her feelings towards him.
Shayera spoke the truth, "If you want me, I'm yours." She stepped closer to Talak, "All you have to do is spare the Earth," she gave Talak an offer of her love to him.
Talak stared at Shayera for a few seconds. He bashed the shield in frustration, "Perhaps you'll forget him once Earth is nothing but a memory." Talak turned his back from her as he exited the room, the spikes closing behind him.
Shayera only stared at the door where Talak left. The only thing that was with her at the moment was the humming of the force shield around her. She sat down back on her chair and left to contemplate her thoughts. She lost her only friends on Earth for betraying them, she betrayed her people, and now she may she lost the first man she ever loved. At that moment, Shayera was truly alone.
Luke woke up from his meditation as Artoo warned them that the cruiser was coming in close. Luke looked around the cockpit and spotted Green Lantern, Superman, and Wonder Woman flying next to his X-Wing. He observed the city below and saw the cruiser was stationed above it. That's when he got a warning from the Force that a fight would occur soon.
"Skywalker to Superman," Luke voiced notified Superman through the comlink Batman provided. "Think they know we're here. I'm going to dismount my X-Wing from above their ship and see if I can board them from the top hull."
"Copy, Luke," Superman replied, "Just be careful."
"Artoo," he caught the droid's attention, "Fly the ship above their cruiser, I'm gonna get out of the cockpit."
Artoo acknowledged Luke's commands and drove the X-Wing higher in the sky. When the X-Wing got to a higher elevation, Luke noticed the massive storm of Thanagarian interceptors coming out of the cruiser like an enraged bee swarm. The swarm was hurrying towards the trio of superheroes and a good amount of them split up to engage with the X-Wing above.
Luke paused as he decided to take deep breaths and recite the Jedi code to help him become closer to the Force for this battle. Luke took deep breaths again as he cleared his mind, feeling the Force surge into him like rushing water going into a dry river bed. There he found balance within him when he recited these words.
"Emotion, yet peace. Ignorance, yet knowledge. Passion, yet serenity. Chaos, yet harmony. Death, yet the Force."
Luke with an unbreakable connection to the Force, opened the cockpit. The rushing winds howled as the X-Wing tore through the sky. Luke got out of his seat and made his way to the middle of the X-Wing's elongated nose. Artoo closed the cockpit as the Astromech engaged the S-foils to open. When the ships came towards the X-Wing and the cruiser came into view, Luke looked back at his friend.
"Artoo, When I'm gone, try not to cause too much damage to their ship," Luke jokingly pleaded to his Astromech.
Astoo whistled that he'd do his best. Luke smirked as they were close to the front hall of the cruiser. The Thanagarian interceptors turned their ships to be behind the X-Wing. When Luke knew the time was now, as they were straight above the cruiser, he force-jumped straight into the air. The X-Wing passed below him at great speeds as the interceptor in pursuit whizzed down below him. While free-falling he noticed the League were engaging with the main swarm of fighters. Despite being outnumbered from 3 to hundreds, the League so far was standing their ground in the fight.
He turned his attention to the cruiser as it was getting bigger and bigger. When he knew it was now, he used the Force to cushion the fall for him. When his boots landed, he activated his lightsaber and stabbed the ship's hull with it. With the lightsaber cutting the thick hull of the ship, Luke started to cut a circle around himself. When fully done, he stomped down on it, making the circle go into the ship with him on it.
Luke landed in a long narrow hallway with the cut circular hull on his feet. He then saw a group of Thanagarians turning around to him, not inspecting him to show up anywhere. When no time to waste, Luke used Force to push the soldiers down the hallway. They were all thrown back as they collided with one another down the hallway's dead end.
Thinking it was now or never to find the shield generator room, Luke dashed to one corridor of hallways as he attempted to find the generator. The ship rocked back for a moment, but this didn't stop Luke's search. He guessed it was either Artoo making a mess outside or the League boarding the ship as well.
The Force reached out to him, reminding him a familiar presence was near. Though he wasn't sure who felt their pain and regret. Then it hit him, it was Shayera. He followed her feelings to a hallway that contained the Thanagarian. She was in a room trapped in a ray shield-holding container. The room was separated between her and him with multiple spikes acting as a security door. She was paying no mind, with her head down sitting on a metal slab that was part of the floor. He could sense she wasn't in the best of thoughts.
He paused for a second to ask himself a question. "Should I free her?" Luke's only interaction with Shayera Hol is in the Batcave, despite it being short and tense no due from the Leagues looks at her. She lied on her part, she betrayed their trust, and that was something in between them. If anything, Luke has more reason to leave her there.
Luke also remembered the first time sensing her emotions. She carried guilt and regret with her back in the cave. She broadcasted that she was lost, alone, and struggled with everything. He could feel in the back of her head that she wanted to do something, to fix her mistakes, she wanted redemption. If his father wanted redemption and helped him with it, then what gave him the right for Luke to deny hers?
Luke only looked at the unobservant Hawkgirl through the security spikes as he made his decision.
Shayera was rocked back from the ship being shaken by the battle. She heard the multiple footsteps of Thanagarian soldiers rushing into a single hallway with weapons at the ready. She wasn't surprised that the League was storming into the ship to deactivate the shield generator.
She only sat there in the cell room as the battle outside occurred. She put her head down to stare at her feet as she retreated to her thoughts. "Should I help them?" she questioned herself not knowing what to do. She helped them earlier by telling them of Talak's true plan and a holodisk to look at. She did her best to fix the mistake she had made earlier. She wanted to redeem herself and she wanted to help. But with Kragger's deception to track her back at the Batcave, it seems like everything she does, she makes it worse.
Earth being invaded, the League imprisoned, her people thinking now she's a traitor, her friends not trusting her anymore, and the men she held dearly might not love her ever again. All of that was her doing, all of that was her fault. Earth paid for her mistakes, the League will have to fix them, and Thanagar will be in ruins all because of her. If anything, she shouldn't even escape, she should save everybody the trouble and stay with the ship to burn.
Shayera was put out of her thoughts when the security spikes opened. What puzzled her was that there were no buttons pushed on the other side nor even any physical force to break them. The force field around her starts to shimmer and then completely fades around her.
She looked up to see her new rescuer and recognized the face. It was the pilot, Luke Skywalker. A self-proclaimed Jedi Knight. She saw the security footage back on the prison shuttle, if he had magic abilities or just telekinesis she couldn't tell.
She noticed the younger man had changed his outfit. Everything he wore was black, boots, pants, the tunic shirt, and the only glove on his right hand. Everything was except the flap that was opened revealing it to be white inside and the silver buckle part of his belt. He had his sliver tube-like weapon deactivated in his right hand.
He stepped closer to Shayera as the shield barrier was gone between them. She noticed he looked relatively calm despite the battle he was probably in. The battle that she caused.
"You alright?" Skywalker asked Shayera.
Though she was physically fine, the same can't be said about her thoughts, "Yeah, I'm fine."
Then she heard multiple Thanagarian soldiers clash with another assailant outside in the hallway. They were all thrown back across the hallway as they grunted and were laid unconscious on the floor. The figure walked up to the cell's door facing the hallway revealing it to be Diana. She looked back at Skywalker first, then changed her direction to Shayera. Her face changed to a look of anger, though it wasn't the same face that seemed like she wanted to split open Shayera with an axe back at the cave. She didn't know if Diana would have left her if the ship crashed, but Shayera didn't want to know the answer.
The two stared at each other for a few moments, Skywalker looking in between the two. Diana then made her way across the hallway to battle. She sat back down in defeat as Skywalker still stood there looking at her. They didn't need her, they could do this without her. Besides, all she would do if she helped was make things worse.
"Just go," Shayera tearfully said to Skywalker, "You guys can save the world without me, I already done enough." She warned Skywalker that her involvement would just be their undoing.
She sat there, putting her arms on her legs and staring down at her feet. The only thing she heard was the sound of battle around and in the ship, as she desperately waited for Skywalker to leave her. She waited, she waited, and she waited for him to leave the room. But he didn't instead he walked towards her. She didn't want to see what he was doing or would do to her. She already gave him plenty to kill her if that's what he's asking.
Then he did something she never expected. She would never guess that a stranger like this, who had more reasons to hate her for all the things she'd done to everyone, would do something like this. He reached out his hand below her face, gesturing for her to use it to stand up. She looked at him confused. He looked down at her, he gave her a smile and a compassionate look for her. Then he said something she didn't fully understand at that time.
"I'm not going to do anything before I save you first, Shayera Hol." He stated to Shayera.
She looked confused at him, "Saving? Saving me?" Shayera thought, "I'm the one that needs saving and not the Earth?"
"I can see that you don't know what to do," he continued his statement puzzled Shayera. "You think everything you did was your fault and you're the one to be blamed."
Luke said that made Shayera feel like she had just been hit with a bat to the stomach, "But believe me when I say this, not all of this is your fault."
Shayera reacted to him with shock, "What?"
Luke explained, "I don't think you did this on purpose, you were doing it for what you thought was best for your people. Despite being given a reason to have your people build that generator to end the war. You still thought it was the right thing to stop it because it would destroy this planet. You couldn't turn your back on the people of Earth. You never knew that it what end up like this, so like back in the cave, and thats why I forgive you."
Shayera looked at Skywalker as if he spoke to her in another language she didn't understand. Out of all of her friends and the people she knew, this stranger forgives her for this she made a mistake. She was speechless.
"Just because you made a mistake," he continued, "Doesn't mean you should let it define who you are, you shouldn't let it destroy the good in you, Shayera." Skywalker looked into Shayera. "It's never too late to set things right, no matter how bad it seems."
Despite all of the mayhem and chaos outside of the room. For Shayera there was nothing else in the universe in that moment other than her and Luke Skywalker. She tried thinking about what he said. He said she shouldn't give up, she shouldn't drop down in defeat despite everything that happened. She needed to help the League stop Hro, whether they needed help or not.
She took Skywalker's gloved hand and used it to help her up despite not needing it. Skywalker's smile grew as he nodded which seemed like he was proud, proud of her. She looked to Skywalker with a new mission, "You guys need to turn off the shield generator, right?"
Luke nodded, "Yes, do you know where it's at?"
Shayera responded, "I do follow me," she dashed out to the room with Skywalker behind her. She noted that she would need a weapon, she looked around and saw one of the maces on the ground that the downed soldiers dropped. She quickly picked it up as she led Skywalker down the hallway to the generator room. When crossing an intersection, the hallway next to them was filled with soldiers. They took note of them being then and began to open fire on the duo.
Skywalker activated his green energy sword as he deflected most of the shots at them with efficiency. "Go!" Luke told Shayera, "I'll cover you, just head to the generator room!"
Shayera nodded as she rushed to the hallway to the generator room. She can still hear Skywalker's weapon crackle and whoosh in the air from his fight with the soldiers despite her running away from the action. She heads to the doors of the generator room and notices the doors have been bent inwards to the room.
She crosses through the misshapen doors and goes straight into a fight she never wants to be a part of. Hro and John were fighting, though John was already on the ground unconscious. The main control of the shields was still intact. It was behind a ray shield that protected the controls from the bottom of the room to the roof. The rest of the generator room was a mess. The circular control room for the shield had a huge dent in one side of the room. Parts of the control consoles that hugged the room were slashed or beaten in.
All of this damage was caused by the two men she loved. Two men who are doing what they thought was right, doing their duty. The same two men fought and brutalized each other in this room. The two men she betrayed and tore her apart between two worlds that can never forgive her. One man was standing victorious while the other lay on the hard floor. She thought that they didn't have this brutal fight for Earth or Thanagar, it was for her. Ever since both of them heard of her conflicted feelings for the other man, they both had the look that they wanted to murder each other.
She didn't know what to do, just moments she was set to protect Earth from her people. She was on a purpose thanks to Skywalker, now another decision came up to her with no one to support her. Who will she choose? Hro Talak, Commander in Thangar's military, her engaged, lover, proud warrior. Or John Stewart, Green Lantern, soldier, strict but soft-hearted. It was a decision that she wished would never pop up.
It was a decision of love, despite her betrayal of both of them, one of them might forgive her and spend the rest of her days with her. She stood there for a moment, with no clarity. She could let Talak kill John, it was the easiest decision, and she could just stand there. But then she could never live with herself afterward, letting Earth and John get murdered. At that moment, she lost hope in her mission of redemption.
Then she remembered Skywalker's words earlier, "It's never too late to set things right, no matter how bad it seems." His voice echoed into her mind as she found the answer.
She needs to save John, she needs to save Earth, she needs to save Hro. Somewhere in there the man that survived the Gordnaians and let his hate blind him was the man she fell in love with years ago. With her resolve rekindled, she quickly reaches out to Hro before he can deliver the final blow to John.
"Hro, enough!" She demanded her commander and engaged to stop his axe from killing John. Talak drops his attack stance and faces Shayera.
Shayera pleaded with him, "The fight is over. You're a soldier, not a murderer." She goes to him face to face, to tell the man she still loves the truth. That he can still be reasoned with.
All of the crumpled when Talak backhanded her across the room. Shyayera is now on her knees as she wipes some blood from the edge of her mouth.
"I'm a fool!" Talak snapped, "For ever loving you!" That stung Shayera more than the hit could ever feel.
She gets back up, but Talak will not nicely take reason. Though she never wanted to do this, she must fight Hro. She readies herself as the mace she held started to spark with electricity. "It didn't have to be this way."
Talak readied his axe as he stared back into Shayera, "Yes, It did." He charged with his flight as well did Shayera. Both weapons clashed as they battled with each other. The heavy weapons beamed sparks and lights across the room.
They went further into the air, weapons repelling each other with heavy strikes and blocks. Shayera managed to get an opening and hit Talak in his shoulder then continued by hitting him in the face. For a brief moment, Talak started to fall. Shayera thinking now's the best chance to land a critical strike to end the fight, flies down to deliver her mace to Talak. He however managed to recover quickly and block her mace with his axe. They engaged for a few seconds before Talak got an advantage by bashing her with the nth axe.
Shayera fell before getting back into the air and continuing the fight to Talak. Right before she raised her mace, Talak struck her down to the room's walls. He braces his axe handle to her throat like a vice. "What he worth it!?" Talak asks his former lover in the eyes.
Shayera struggling at the other end of his axe responds, "This isn't about him, it's about us." She begs him, "Don't kill these innocent people, Hro. Find another way!" She begs him from her heart. "It's not too late to stop this! Please!" Shayera begs from her heart to Talak. Telling him what Skywalker taught her just earlier when it felt like there was no way to go.
Talak takes back to her to think about her pleading. He drops his axe's handle from her throat and releases Shayera. Temporality, Shayera thought Hro finally reached his senses. That they don't need to sacrifice these people. That moment vanished when Talak tightened his grip on the axe and shocked Shayera with it. She screams in agony as the electric current goes through her body like venom. Done with his attack, removes his axe and picks up Shayera by the head. Shayera being stunned was hanging from his hand like a ragdoll.
Talak takes Shayera closer to his face with an answer to her begging, "There's no us anymore, Shayera." He coldly told to the still-stunned Hawkgirl. He then throws Shayera to Green Lantern who was just about to get up. Shayera collided with John, now pinning him back on the floor.
Though Shayera was discombobulated from the shock, she realized she was with John. Green Lantern has no ring to fight back and is still dazed from the fight earlier. Both downed heroes looked up to see Talak looking down below them with his axe ready. "Just a fallen traitor and a man who hides behind her." He coldly said as he just raised his axe to deliver the final blow. "You two wanted to be together, I'll give you that wish."
Shayera closes her eyes as both and John won't be able to defend herself. She thought that this was it. She was going to die by the man she once loved. She was going to die as a betrayer to Earth, to Thanagar, to the Justice League, and to the men she loved. Shayera Hol, the woman who betrayed everyone she knew.
She waited for the axe to do its job and end it. But it didn't, instead Talak was pushed back across the room by an extreme invisible force. Talak crashed into the control panels and into the wall. Both she and John were surprised by the event, though they still weren't in full recovery to get up.
Shayera looked at the direction of the force that pushed Talak. It was Luke Skywalker, standing in the doorway with his weapon off in his right hand. He slowly walked up to them, then stood in front of them to make him in between them and the now recovering Talak.
Though Shayera was about to pass out, she heard Skywalker say something to Talak in a stern but calm manner before she lost consciousness. "I think they had enough, Talak."
Luke confronted Talak as the commander was getting up from Luke's force push. Luke looked behind John and Shayera to make sure they were right. Shayera was knocked out while John was awake but in no condition to fight. They will have to wait till Luke is done with Talak. Luke gestured his hand to use the force to gently move the duo to the other side of the room, where they'll be safe from the upcoming fight. John was surprised at him hovering with Shayera on the other side and tried to get up to help Luke.
"Stay down, John," Luke halts John with his hand across the room, "It won't take long," Luke said as he turned back to Talak, now clenching his teeth at the Jedi.
"You!" Talak said with venom, "This doesn't involve you, boy!"
Luke with his lightsaber still in his hand and in a ready-to-draw stance, kindly replied, "It involved me when you plan to destroy this planet and its people for your own benefit."
Talak narrowed his eyes, "If you think I'm not gonna serve my people by some cowardly pep talk then you're making a fool out of yourself like Shayera."
Luke kept his stance, he'll offer Talak to surrender and see the errors of his way one last time. From the looks of the situation when he came into the room, Shayera tried to reason with Talak and failed. Luke will be generous, "I will give you a chance to surrender and not continue with this plan, commander," Luke pleaded to Talak with some respect, "Earth doesn't need to be destroyed to win the war."
Talak kept looking at Luke, "The last time I surrendered I was sent to a Gordanian prison camp for years," he readied his weapon as it started to spark, "I won't make the same mistake twice."
Luke felt he was not going to back down. He could feel it in him, the anger, the rage in Talak was like a storm that didn't want to stop. Luke took a deep breath to calm himself to be with the Force and replied, "Then so be it."
Luke then activated his lightsaber with a two-hand grip and turned his torso to his left as he solidly planted his legs with a wide stance on the floor. Applying his form to the opening stance of Aturu to fight the Thanagarian commander. From what he can gather from the previous fights with the Hawkmen, they were heavy hitters but slow to react and to counterattack. The aggressive force-based style worked great back on the prison ship, the bat cave, and now on board the cruiser.
Talak charged with a flight to Luke, Luke then dashed to engage with Talak. Talak readied his strike above his head to deliver his axe to Luke. The Jedi saw this and quickly sidestepped right before the axe missed him. With a short opening, Luke grazed Talak's the outer side of his thigh to stun his movement. Talak let out a shout of pain and frustration as he tried to hit Luke where he was. Luke saw this and front-flipped over Talak's swing to get him.
Talak's response was slow as Luke managed to graze Talak's arm that was holding the axe. Talak's arm went limp as he tried to use his good arm to strike at Luke. Luke quickly ducked and force-pushed Talak across the room. Talak went into the wall again as the consoles sparked and groaned from the collision.
With Talak in the smoldering broken wall and panels, Luke turned around to what he assumed was the master control of the shields. The master control itself was protected by an active ray shield that was emitting from the top of the room to the bottom. Luke didn't have time to find the off switch to the ray shields, he didn't have time to ask the still-recovering Shayera. He needs to destroy the ray shield and fast. He calmed himself and reached out to the force to crush the shield emitters to the controls. The circular shield emitters started to groan but were stopped when Luke was warned by the Force.
He reached out to his senses and realized Talak managed to recover from the force push and was coming to him with his axe raised. With no time to lose at the last second, Luke force-jumped into the air as a backflip across the room. Talak's nth axe collided with the ray shield instead of his intended target. The sparking nth metal axe and the energy ray shield caused a massive overload of electricity that lit up the room. The energy surged through Talak's body as he yelled in pain. The energy surge was too great for the shields and finally gave out to an electrical explosion that threw Talak across the room for the final time.
Talak went into the wall like a bullet. Luke on the other side had to cover his face the entire time from the intense amount of light. When the light gave out, the shields were no more. Without a second thought, Luke force-crushed the master controls with his handballing in a fist. The master control was crushed like a piece of paper in 3 seconds. The controls sparked as its connection to the shields to the bypass was disconnected.
Luke pressed his communicator to inform Batamn of the shields being down, "Skywalker to Batman, I've just destroyed the shield controls to the bypass, do you read?"
Luke's call to Batman was replied to by a garble of static that was eventually cut out. Luke turned his attention to Shayera and John who were now getting up. Luke rushed to the duo to make sure they were ok, "You two alright?"
Shayera gets up with the help of John and groans in response, "Yeah, I'm fine," she looks at the Jedi, "Thank you, Skywalker."
Luke knew she lied, partially. She told the truth that she was physically fine, and his senses confirmed that. But emotionally, she was running wild despair and regret, though she was good at hiding it through her face. Luke guessed her inner pains were coming from her confrontation with Talak. Luke rightfully guessed that Shayera had feelings for Talak as she did with John. From her mind, Talak's words cut deeper than his axe could ever do to Shayera. It felt the same set of emotions she was feeling when she and John looked at each other for a brief second. This was part of the struggle he felt from her earlier. She wasn't just struggling to find her place in between worlds, she was also finding her love between two men. Two men who just now showed their true colors to Shayera.
Luke's observation was paused as a view screen on one of the panels showed an outside image of the bypass generator. The screen alerted that there was a large object heading a collision course with the generator. The object itself was the large station Luke remembered seeing when he arrived on the planet. It was burning from its entry out of the atmosphere and quickly heading towards the generator. Luke guessed this was the weapon Batman was talking about. The station violently smashed straight into the large generator and the collision caused a massive mushroom cloud that engulfed the area.
The fires and smoke took some time to calm itself after the collision. In the aftermath, the screen showed a massive crater where the generator used to be. Luke looked back to the duo and they too were watching the explosion. He sensed and saw that Shayera was genuinely happy that the generator was destroyed. She looked at John again and that happiness disappeared. John and Shayera looked at the ground after both of their eyes were engaged with each other. He could tell they still had feelings for each other despite what happened. Whether they want to make amends with each other is up in the air.
Luke sensed more Thanagarian soldiers were hastily approaching the room. Luke went in between the injured duo as he engaged his lightsaber in a defensive stance. Thanagarians rushed into the room as they readied their weapons towards the three. Luke wanted to protect the injured and unarmed two prepared to fight the Thanagrians and escape the cruiser when the opening was clear for them.
Luckily, Luke's plans of fighting his way out of the cruiser didn't happen. Thanagarians in the hallway grunted in pain as they were thrown into the room by none other than Diana. Diana herself was badly damaged, from messed up hair, cuts, and bruises all over her body. Yet from all of her physical torment, the Amazon readied her weapon to the soldiers that surrounded Luke, "Who's next?!"
Some of the soldiers prepared to fight Diana until they were stopped by their commander, Talak. "Stand down!" He came to order his soldiers, "Lower your weapons." Talak came closer to his men with his lightsaber cuts to his arm and leg, limping but going through the pain. He was more badly bruised than Wonder Woman, with a stream of blood running down from his helmet, electrical scars, and purple splotches of flesh that were bruised and tender.
"Our mission is a failure," he states to his soldiers, "There's no more reason to fight. Let them go." That was his final command before heading towards Shayera.
The soldiers obeyed his command and lowered their weapons. Luke did the same by turning off his lightsaber and clipping it on his left side and Diana sheathed her sword to her hip. Luke sensed the approaching Talak didn't want to fight anymore and wanted to only talk to Shayera. Knowing his intentions, Luke stepped aside to let Talak face Shayera, though still watching him if he did anything.
Talak stopped in his tracks from a step away from Shayera. Talak, looking into her eyes as he gritted his teeth, "I hope you're pleased with yourself. It will take years for us to rebuild elsewhere."
Shayera looked back into him, Luke sensed Shayera still retained feelings for him, however, those feelings were overshadowed by the truth of Talak's real personality. Shayera knowing what to say kindly replied, "Then you'd better get started." She then leaves him, probably the last words she will ever tell him.
Shayera made her way out of the room, with John and Diana following. Luke mirrored their actions as the huddle of Thanagarians made a hole to let the group through. It was silent through the ship and going out of it. He doubted the three talked to each other as he had Artoo pick up him.
Notes
Sorry if I changed the POV format here, tried to enter the story from my spacebattles thread but it wouldn't work. If you guys have any suggestions or even who should be Luke's love interests let me know. Note that I will not be doing a harem plot, there's nothing wrong with Luke having some women falling for him but it's completely different if he goes with multiple women at the same time, it would be out of character in my mind.
