Momo Yaoyorozu, a senior at the Adachi Hero Preparatory Academy, kept her eyes closed as she listened to the wheels of her private limousine crunch and shift into a gentle turn. The girl had her hands folded in her lap atop the fabric of her bright red school uniform skirt, and she wore a white buttoned blouse with a black suit jacket featuring Adachi's logo upon the lapel. Momo was quite tall for her age and had fair, dainty features that contrasted her massive amount of jet-black hair, which was pulled back into a messy whorl. Sitting next to her upon the leather seat was a black bound notebook, with a blue pen tucked carefully within the metal spiral at the book's edge.
The sudden sound of the window between the front and back halves of the limousine whirring softly as it lowered caused Momo to open her eyes. Her butler was looking at her through the rearview mirror as he gently guided the vehicle into a turning stop, just in front of the massive array of connected glass towers that formed the main building of U.A. University.
"We're here, Miss Yaoyorozu," the elderly man said in a soft voice. "Would you like me to accompany you inside?"
For a moment, Momo considered the notion. For the duration of her ride from Adachi to U.A., and in truth, the entire week beforehand, she had been on edge. Sleep hadn't come easily, she could hardly bring herself to eat, and for the first time in her life, Momo felt that she knew nothing. Rolling down the tinted window beside her to look at the U.A. towers ended up only reinforcing those fears and caused her throat to tighten involuntarily.
"…Miss Yaoyorozu…?"
"…n-no," Momo finally said as she forced herself to put one hand on the door handle as the other gathered her notebook from the seat. "No, thank you. I need to do this alone."
"As you wish. You'll do fine," the man encouraged with a friendly smile through the mirror. Momo returned the gesture with a weak one of her own before opening the door and stepping out onto the pavement.
The midday sun reflecting off the glass panels of the U.A. towers was absolutely blinding, and Momo had to raise a hand to shield her eyes as she approached the steps leading to the entranceway. The girl wrinkled her nose as she fought back the urge to sneeze, all the while making her way forward. As she began to carefully ascend the stone staircase toward the door, the sound of a second pair of footsteps behind her caused her to pause and look over her shoulder.
"Excuse me," a boy that seemed to be around her age with deep blue hair and slender glasses apologized as he sank into a quick bow. "I didn't mean to startle you."
"Hm?" Momo asked as she eyed up the teen, who was wearing a white formal shirt, dark purple tie, and a pair of black slacks. "Oh, you didn't. Are you… here on recommendation as well, by any chance?"
The other student's eyes lit up behind his lenses as he raised a neatly folded piece of paper between two fingers.
"I am, indeed!" the boy proudly proclaimed as he offered Momo a smile. "Tenya Iida, from Mori High School,"
"Momo Yaoyorozu. Adachi Prep," Momo replied as the two students began to walk beside each other. "Are you with the hero course, too?"
"I am!" Tenya assured. "It's a pleasure to meet you, Yaoyorozu, and it's lucky that we ran into each other so soon. I expect we'll be seeing each other quite often once the semester finally begins!"
Momo paused as she and Tenya reached the upper landing, just before the large glass doors at the entrance to the academy lobby. She turned to face her new classmate and offered him a friendly, if a bit nervous smirk.
"I… yes, I suppose we will. Do you know if we'll be meeting the two others today…?"
Tenya nodded sharply as he walked forward and held the door open for Momo while gesturing a hand across his stomach.
"According to my brother, we're likely to be brought together as a group of four and given instructions for what to do between now and the end of our senior year," Tenya explained. "I'm very much looking forward to finding out who the other two aspiring heroes that received special recommendations are."
"Well, I know one of them," Momo admitted as she walked into the lobby.
She looked around at the cavernous chamber with pointed interest, taking in the decorations on display. Several glass cabinets full of trophies and medals of all sorts were lined in a row on either side of a wide reception desk. At the center of the room was a gigantic golden statue of All Might, his hands upon his hips and his signature smile quite literally dazzling to behold as the sunlight reflected off his metallic teeth.
"Do you?" Tenya asked, his curiosity piqued. "Personally, or…?"
"…I'm not sure how to answer that, actually," Momo admitted as she turned toward Iida and folded her arms beneath her chest. "Shoto Todoroki- Endeavor's son. We've exchanged a few words here and there at parties, but I don't really 'know' him…"
Tenya's brow rose even higher than before, and he used a finger to push his glasses a bit farther up his nose.
"…Shoto Todoroki attends parties? I didn't think he would be the type…"
"Oh," Momo realized with an embarrassed smile as her cheeks flushed. "Not… those sorts of parties. Dinner parties. His family has brought him along to a few formal events that my family has hosted at our… mansion…"
"Ah, I see," Tenya replied with a nod. "Yes, that makes more sense. Well, in that case, we're certainly in talented company! Now, we have only to meet one more student."
"You're lookin' right at her."
Momo froze as a feminine voice came from just over her shoulder. She looked slightly sideways, only to see nothing at all behind her. Slowly, she did a full turn and stepped backward, her mouth agape at what she saw. A floating suit jacket in canary yellow and a black skirt were suspended in midair, with a folded sheet of paper floating next to them.
"I-I… what…?" Momo stammered as she took another step backward toward Tenya.
"Toru Hagakure," the voice answered, its tone dripping with amusement. "It's my Quirk-Invisibility. Don't act so surprised. We've all got to be working with pretty wild powers to make U.A. recommendation, am I right?"
"You're not wrong, Hagakure," Tenya replied as he immediately snapped into a formal bow, his arms rigidly at his sides. "Tenya Iida."
"…Momo Yaoyorozu," the girl followed up as she copied Iida's gesture. "And… I'm sorry, Hagakure. I wasn't sure what to think."
"Pfft," Toru said dismissively as her uniform jacket's sleeve made a waving motion. "You're not the first person to freak out when they first see me. I've gotten screams before, so you're good."
"That's… horrible," Momo offered. "I'm sorry."
"Nah, it comes with the territory. I take pride in being a freak among freaks," Toru boasted as she began to walk toward the reception desk. "Own your Quirks. After all, they're a pretty good indicator of who you are."
"Do you think so?" Tenya asked as he moved to follow with Momo in tow. "The notion of 'who you are' seems to be quite a broad topic…"
"Well, I'm quite a broad," Toru joked as she slid her paper across the desk to the receptionist. "Every person I've met has been a perfect match for their Quirk, even if they can't necessarily see it at first. I don't think that's an accident. What's your Quirk, Yaoyorozu?"
Momo kept her eyes away from where she assumed Toru's face would be as she removed her paper from inside of her notebook and passed it to the receptionist.
"…I call it 'Creation'. I can transform the lipids within my body into any other substance, so long as I know its chemical formula."
Toru and Tenya both paused, leading the receptionist to lean up and snatch Tenya's paper from his hand as he froze with it halfway held out to her.
"That's… incredible," the boy praised as he looked at Momo with a sense of wonder. "Most certainly a Quirk deserving of U.A. University!"
"It's about more than just having a powerful Quirk," Momo offered. "The Quirk doesn't make the hero…"
"Doesn't it?" Toru asked as she was handed back her letter. "We wouldn't be here without 'em. And you just told me more about yourself than you probably realize."
Momo opened her mouth to reply, only for the receptionist to interrupt while handing back her letter.
"Down the hall on the left, third door on the right side. Professor Aizawa and Professor Kan are waiting for you three."
"Then let's not keep them waiting," Tenya encouraged as he took his letter and offered the receptionist a nod. "This way!"
Toru was the first to follow, and then Momo. It wasn't long before she spoke up once again.
"…what does my Quirk tell you about me?"
Toru laughed lightly, the movement of her clothing suggesting that she might be skipping down the hallway behind Tenya.
"Lots of things. I'll let you know if I'm right after we've spent some time living together. Do you think they'll put the two boys on one team, and the two girls on the other?"
"Unlikely," Tenya said. "U.A. likes to keep an even distribution of both sexes and Quirk types across teams, apparently. I wouldn't be surprised if one of you is with me, and the other is placed with Todoroki."
"That's a shame," Toru muttered as she followed Tenya into the designated room. "So much for having an early advantage with roommates."
Momo made her way into the barren classroom silently as she listened to the conversation. The setup was quite like what she was used to at Adachi- rows of desks, a teacher's desk at the front, and a projector just above the whiteboard. Unlike a typical classroom, however, there were multiple adults waiting for her.
Shota Aizawa, the professional hero known as Eraserhead, stood behind the desk at the head of the class. On his right was Sekijiro Kan, otherwise called Vlad King. Eraserhead wore a simple outfit of plain black clothes and a bunched, incredibly voluminous scarf around his neck and shoulders. The man's shaggy black hair hung down around his face, and his eyes were bloodshot and tired. Vlad King was clad in a deep red jumpsuit and stood much taller than his colleague, his muscles bulging beneath the material of his outfit. Two pointed fangs protruded upward from his bottom lip, and his white hair stood on end in a wild, spiked style.
Though Momo had never met either man in person before, their presence within the room didn't come as a shock to her. What did take her by surprise was the presence of a third man standing on the opposite side of the room, his arms folded across his barrel chest and torrents of perpetual flame wreathed around his body. Enji Todoroki- the number two hero in Japan, Endeavor- stood glowering at the three students, with his son Shoto standing next to him. Shoto was a far smaller individual with hair neatly divided between white and dark red sections that hung down into his mismatched eyes. He had a nasty burn on the left side of his face that seemed to extend up into his hairline. Endeavor wore an aggressive scowl along with his dark blue hero suit. Shoto, in contrast, simply looked miserable in his white school uniform.
"Good. They're here," Enji growled, the flames around his shoulders intensifying slightly. "Let's get this started, already."
"We'll move at our own pace," Professor Aizawa said in a bored voice as he gestured toward the front row of desks. "Have a seat."
"Shoto Todoroki, from Imagawa High," Professor Kan began as the new arrivals each took a desk for themselves. "Momo Yaoyorozu, from Adachi Prep. Tenya Iida, from Mori High, and Toru Hagakure, from Ito Academy. Correct?"
"Yes, sir," the three students at the front of the room answered in unison.
"…Todoroki," Professor Aizawa called as he locked eyes with Enji. "Why don't you come and join your classmates at the front of the room?"
Shoto's frown only deepened, and his shoulders raised slightly as he watched the professor's eyes move in his direction. Wordlessly, Shoto looked up at his father, who stared down with a look of disdain.
"…hmph. Go."
Shoto made his way across the room rather quickly and took a seat beside Momo, though he said nothing as he slipped into his desk.
"Why are you here, Endeavor?" Professor Kan asked, dropping all pretense of civility as he nearly spat the words at the other man.
"I go where I want to go," Enji answered simply. "And I have a vested interest in my son's education. There are still three months to go until graduation, and another two or so after that before classes start here. If U.A. has slipped in recent years, Shoto could easily find a better university in that time."
Professor Aizawa's lip twitched, and he showed the slightest hint of clenched teeth.
"…how wonderful for him."
"Regardless- let it be known that I don't like you being here," Professor Kan continued. "This isn't normal, and you're making the other three students tense."
"The other three aren't my problem," Enji denied, unmoving. "Now, continue your session as planned."
Momo shifted uncomfortably in her seat, trying her best to ignore the professional hero standing far behind her. She chanced a quick look at Shoto, who had moved his desk slightly farther away from her and had busied himself with staring intently at the wooden surface.
Professor Aizawa made a low noise of frustration before turning his attention to the quartet before him.
"I guess congratulations are in order for making it this far, this early. So… congratulations."
"Thank you, Sir!" Tenya practically yelled with an enthusiastic nod over his desk, causing Toru to jump in her seat beside him.
"Tone it down…"
"I am sure that you have several questions, but I'll do my best to answer the most common ones now, before we open the floor to all of you," Professor Aizawa continued. "To start, as I'm sure you know, the first year hero course at U.A. is split into two classes- Class 1-A, and Class 1-B. Ten students each, across two dormitory floors. You'll be living together, eating together, and so on, but 1-A and 1-B will be in separate classes, for the most part. You four will be co-presidents of your respective teams."
"That means the four of you will be split across the two classes- Iida and Hagakure, you'll be in Class 1-A. Todoroki and Yaoyorozu, you'll be in Class 1-B," Professor Kan added.
"Excuse me?" Enji interrupted as he began to advance through the rows of desks. "You are not putting Shoto in 1-B!"
Professor Aizawa let out a haggard sigh and shook his head as he pinched the bridge of his nose.
"…Endeavor, 1-A and 1-B aren't divided by caliber of student, a-"
"You think I don't know that?" Enji asked as he came to a stop next to Shoto's desk. "The problem is that 1-B is run by him," he finished while pointing to Professor Kan.
"Yeah," Professor Kan answered with a devious smirk. "And that's why we did it. If you've got a problem, take it up with Nezu."
"…tch. Shoto- don't get comfortable."
Enji shook his head before heading for the door of the classroom and shoving his way through it, leaving the six remaining occupants in stunned silence.
"…I'm sorry," Shoto said quietly as he kept his hateful glare down upon the desk. "About him."
"…so am I," Professor Aizawa said icily as he watched the door swing back and forth upon its hinges. "Don't worry about it, Todoroki- we'll sort this out…"
Author's Note:
Quick warning I keep forgetting to post- this story will have manga/Season 5 spoilers, and they'll come a lot sooner than you might think. Some things about One for All specifically will be tweaked and 'spoiled' within 4-5 chapters or so, specifically from Season 5 of the anime. You have been warned. Get out now if you're anime-only and don't want some things spoiled. It probably wouldn't 'ruin' anything for you, but I know some people would be upset if I just started dropping things not in the anime yet into the story without warning.
Next week will see a return to Bakugo, and then some Kirishima/Ashido stuff.
