In a bedroom somewhere,

Fuse

I woke up on a comfortable bed in a room I didn't recognize. Although, this room seemed very… Professional the first time I looked through it in a haze.

Well, it's a house made of stone, so I can only assume that we're not in a very modern world.

All there was in this empty room was a desk, some blank sheets of paper, some pencils, and not much else.

Also, judging by the fact I'm lying back first on the bed, I'm going to guess someone put me here because I fell pretty badly when I got here.

Speaking of, what the hell was that? Because that fucking HURT.

Never again am I trusting a god to transport me somewhere, because I hated falling like that and I really hated the fact that the falling effects looked so good and then all turned red like that.

Also, what was it that voice said? 'Let my ambition raze all it lays its gaze upon'?

That is… Super ominous.

I should also consider writing that down somewhere so I don't forget that. There's something very… Wrong going here.

Well, unless if Shapeshifter, that bastard, orchestrated all of that. Then in that case I'm not just a theist anymore, I'm an anti-theist. Screw that guy.

Then, I remembered, I have a new body now!

I started moving my body a bit to get used to the new proportions and body material, and I have to say, this feels pretty good! Doesn't feel like breaking a shoe in, it just feels normal. Now, some things I need to do real quick…

Getting up from the bed, I moved to the desk and picked up a pencil and some sheets of paper, and on one I wrote down '"let my ambition raze all it lays its gaze upon" what does that mean?'

Hopefully, the owner of this place doesn't mind that I took some of their stuff.

Then, I remembered that I have some kind of system now.

So, how does it activate?!

I look around for anything else that maybe gives me a hint, but nope. All I notice is that the architecture in this room is pretty nice. Although, considering it's made out of stone, maybe I was sent back to the past…

Regardless, I still need to figure out how to use that system…

I hesitatingly whispered out, "...Gamer system?"

[You have activated your system! Congratulations!]

[Before we continue, would you like to have an open voice or open mind settings?]

[Open voice requires your voice to be used to activate the system, open mind requires your mind.]
Luckily, there was nobody in that room to witness me jump back a solid foot in surprise from the sudden transparent and very futuristic screens appearing in front of me.

When I calmed down, I read the options, and it felt like a pretty obvious choice in favor of open mind, considering not speaking to myself seems like a good and obvious choice.

That being said, these option names suck ass. Why couldn't whoever name this get better?

I waited around as I made my choice, before realizing it's probably still on open voice.

"Uh, open mind setting?"

[You have chosen Open mind settings! To change your settings, visit the system status menu.]

[You now have access to your general menu.]

I look at the singular door in my room. I don't hear anything coming from the other side, so it theoretically should be safe enough to go through these menus before my… What do you call benevolent kidnappers? Or whatever this situation is?

Damn, I should've paid attention in english…

Well, whoever those people are, I think I have enough time.

I double check the room to make sure cameras aren't in here, though. You can never be too sure.

Okay, I'm a straight F student, then.

Also, I have mana now, that's super rad. I don't know what it does, but it sounds cool and important.

Also, lost patriot? I mean, kind of accurate, but come on man.

Also, Genshin Impact. Pretty sure that's a game I knew.

…I only watched like, a couple videos on it.

Man, if I knew I was going to live my afterlife here, maybe I would've played the game.

Anyways, what does that change button do?

Wow, okay, that just made everything worse.

Universal… I guess that means how I stack up against everyone outside of Genshin Impact?

Well, the minuses make me very depressed, I'm going to put that back to the Genshin setting.

After I do that, I expanded the ranking stuff.

…Still a straight F student.

Welp, looking at that rank point button, I might get points to level those ranks up in the future, but how? Maybe eating souls? How does that whole soul thing even work?

I decided I would figure it out later, and checked out my perks.

As it turns out, it includes all of my stuff that I got from gambling with Shapeshifter.

Also, an extra perk that I suddenly have.

[Lookin' Stylish! - A base perk for the stylist profession. Allows all armor to be hidden beneath your vanity items, turning them invisible while still keeping the effects.]

You know, this was probably something I should've thought about before becoming a stylist, but I'm very glad whoever made this thought about it for me.

Well, anyways, I will be very glad to profit off of this.

So, I move to my titles.

(Titles)

[Lost Patriot - title - A soldier lost from their homeland, searching for a way back. No bonuses.]

…Well, it's true.

I don't really know how to respond to that, though…

Maybe it's best if I just don't.

I took a look at my classes and professions, and nothing about my mercenary or stylist choices were changed.

So, self-status seemed like something I'll be looking at fairly regularly.

I… have nothing special to say about it though.

I looked into my inventory and-

Ah, hey, there's my first fortune!

I reread it, and yep, still as ominous as last I saw it.

I tried to put my paper into my inventory, and it quite literally disappeared in my hands.

Wow, magic.

Also, I noticed my starter weapons, it looks like.

[Iron sword - A sword made for beginners.] x2

[Colt M1911 - A classic pistol, perfect for beginners.] x2

[45 caliber A.C.P. - Bullets for your good friend, the pistol.] x25

Nice, nice. 25 bullets are really nice to have, but the fact that I only have 25 bullets sucks a lot. Does this world sell bullets for this gun so I don't run out?

Oh well, I'll figure that out later.

There's nothing else in my inventory, but I do remember something about soulbinding that I have.

So, uh, soul bind… The sword?

Please name your soul-bound item

Oh, uh, I didn't think it'd work like that despite it seeming really obvious.

I don't know how else it would work, but whatever.

…So, naming.

I… Don't have any good ideas on what to name them. Maybe something real edgy? Ugh, but that'd be embarrassing anytime I look at it.

…How about… I name them after someone else, like…

Presidents!

You know what, I'm going to name all of my soul-bound weapons after presidents.

So, I'm gonna name the 2 swords…

Eisenhower and Roosevelt!

[Roosevelt (Sword) - A sharp blade bound to Fuse's soul, allowing it to grow alongside him. This particular weapon is named after the 32nd president of the United States, Franklin D. Roosevelt]

[Eisenhower (Sword) - A sharp blade bound to Fuse's soul, allowing it to grow alongside him. This particular weapon is named after the 34th president of the United States, Dwight D. Eisenhower.]

And then I'm going to name my pistols Washington and Lincoln!

[Washington (Colt M1911) - A small pistol bound to Fuse's soul, allowing it to grow alongside him. This particular weapon is named after the 1st president of the United States, George Washington.]

[Lincoln (Colt M1911) - A small pistol bound to Fuse's soul, allowing it to grow alongside him. This particular weapon is named after the 16th president of the United States, Abraham Lincoln.]

Great, great. I fucking love America.

I also note that the weapons suddenly shifted into different shapes.

It also looks way cooler than it did before.

So, soulbound weapons shape to my aesthetics, neat.

So, now that that's done with, next is… Quests.

Okay, cool, I get rewarded for what I'm already doing. Also, gacha? I can't believe I'm gambling again…

The slight increase in ranks is cool. I have no idea what that means though, since my system doesn't have any actual numbers attached to it so I have no sense of scale.

And what the hell is locked? Because that's just menacing as all hell. Is it somehow related to that huge red thing that flew into me? And if that's the case, do I get to unlock it?

Eh, really ominous, but I'll figure it out later. For now, skills.

(Skills)

[Observe - Active - When used on anything, it will show you the object's status. Due to the consigliere perk, (Observe) will also show the opponent's class and/or profession.]

[Gamer's Mind - Passive - Grants you clarity when you are without it. Additionally, this will make you immune to any mind control effects on you.]

[Red Dot - Mercenary - Active - When this skill is used, a little red dot will appear in the location where one of your weapons is pointing. Disappears after firing 1 shot. Uses a minor amount of your stamina per use.]

[Minor Material Bending - Stylist - Active - When this skill is used, any material in your hands will slightly bend to the direction where you want it to go. Uses a minor amount of your mana per use.]

[Stylist Proficiency: Beginner - Stylist - Passive - Grants you a baseline amount of knowledge to help you start your craft. Improves after becoming more experienced in your craft.]

Okay, okay, this is actually pretty cool.

Observe will definitely be useful for basically my entire life. Probably, anyways.

Gamer's mind is a bit weird, but I guess that it basically means I'm eternally calm now. So, I guess it's good. Although, wouldn't that be a perk or something? Or maybe this system just has a different definition of a skill.

So, the red dot is… Some kind of aim assist, but it's cool that I can just make a red dot appear, all for the cost of making me a bit tired, from what I think stamina means.

And minor material bending is pretty cool too and it'll probably be really useful for when I need it.

With that being said, I get stylist proficiency, but not gun proficiency or sword proficiency or mercenary proficiency or whatever?

I know I didn't see it in perks, so does that mean I have to figure that out by myself? And if so, is proficiency a profession exclusive thing?

Actually, that sounds pretty plausible. I'll have to figure out later if I'm actually right about that, though.

I'll sure be excited to make some super fancy shit, though.

Now, what's next… Achievements?

(Achievements)

[When something noteworthy happens, you will gain an achievement and a reward for that achievement.]

Currently, you have [0] achievements.

Well… Okay, that's cool. But it's completely useless to me right now.

So, uh, next up is… World!

(World)

[You cannot travel in-between worlds until you have grasped destiny's blessing.]
[You are currently on: Luciel's World: Genshin Impact]

…What?

Who is Luciel?

Okay, Luciel's world, Genshin Impact. I'm going to guess that Genshin Impact is the world we're on, and Luciel is the… Person that owns the world?

In that case, why am I in their world and not, like, my own? Is that intended? Because I really don't think it is.

Wait, is this Luciel person also a gamer? And if so, did they just start out or are they like, a god now? Can I even answer that question right now?

What the hell even is destiny's blessing? Is that like a tangible item or something?

Heck, I'm so confused now.

Wait, will the system status menu tell me something about that?

Reward: Title: [Ambitious Regent]

Pretty sure this is a FUCK ME moment.

So, first of all, my system status menu shows up, tells me that something is wrong, and doesn't elaborate.

And then without warning, another menu appears with the title 'status of the soul' and looks different from every other menu I've seen to this point, and shows up with a soul.

And then a third, more normal menu shows up with some very ominous text about destiny and ambition.

And then just to rub salt in my wounds, I get 2 achievements that also tell me I'm super fucked in a super ominous way.

Instinct tells me that I'm so doomed somehow.

So, first, what the hell does the error menu tell me?

Literally nothing other than that something is wrong and the system can't fix it. Although I'm very glad to see that it says long live the United States of America. The system is probably a part of me and took all of my American patriotism with it.

Though, it's very weird that it would show up there.

So, what does the new status thing tell me? Firstly, there's an ambitious soul of the domino, and I have no idea what fucking domino, and it has that same 'let my ambition raze all it gazes upon' line from before.

So, that soul is probably what infused itself with me and bumped me off course when I was falling down here.

…Which must be why I ended up in someone else's world.

So, I can safely blame all my woes on this soul, yay.

Then it gives me some weird, but pretty cool paragraph about something about the universe being a prison, ambition spiraling out of control, and destiny awaits.

And lastly… I got a cursed gacha token from an achievement that also tells me something is wrong with my system. And then I get an achievement for my woes, then gives me a weird title. Speaking of, what does that title even do?

[Ambitious Regent - title - If our Emperor is unable to act, then we will do what we must. - When this title is equipped, the other fragments of the domino will fall into line. Additionally, while this title is equipped, you may have another title active.]

Do what we must? Dude, that is so ominous it's not even funny. Who's we? And do I even have other fragments of the domino? Are those even a real thing?

…I mean, I'll equip it, since I have nothing else other than lost patriot. Maybe it's useful?

You have equipped the title [Ambitious Regent]

…Yeah, I don't feel any different. Maybe if I get one of those other shard things, it'll be different. Or maybe it's just a sick ass title, and to be honest, since it allows me to equip another title anyways, I'll always keep it.

Now, I have literally no clue what this all means, other than that ambitious soul thing is the source of all my problems.

I also have literally no way to answer any of my questions, so that basically means I'm stuck with a thousand different questions and no answers to any of them.

…Wow, I really did hit the jackpot when it comes to this whole reincarnating thing. I don't even know much about Genshin Impact because I thought it was just another one-off Chinese knock-off of Breath of The WIld!

…I really do live in the worst timeline.

And then, without warning.

You have completed a quest: Baby Steps.

Your Power rank has increased to F+!

[Gacha Token - When this token is broken, a random item will appear in its place.] x1

Wow, that's… Cool. Also, that addendum thing, does it give me some motivational sentences everytime I finish a quest? That's cooler.

As for my ranks, F to F+ isn't that much of an increase probably, but it is an increase!

I can even feel myself getting slightly stronger, although I have no idea how to put that into words. Maybe I stand a bit more assured of myself?

Well, whatever, I did my quest, and now I can… Shit, what should I do now?

…I guess use those gacha tokens? Even the cursed one, I guess. Hopefully cursed doesn't mean instantly kill.

(Epic Perk)

[Sunshine Power - A perk that grants you additional power if you fight under the sun. The amount of power gained is based on how 'sunny' it is.]

(Epic cursed item.)

[Anemo Delusion - Allows you to use the power of Anemo when worn, at the cost of leeching the life out of you whenever you use its power.]

Okay, I got 2 epic things, that's nice.

One is… Well, I don't think I'm going to regret having it. And the other thing sounds really cool.

Too bad it's cursed.

I looked at the delusion, and well, to be honest, it looks pretty good. And the fact that I could use magic out of it at the cost of my life being leeched sure is something.

Something that I'm not doing.
I think I might just use it as a necklace. It would be a really cool necklace.

…Though, I don't have any string on me at the moment, so I just put it into my inventory for later.

Welp, maybe my quests have something for me now?

My initial reaction to seeing 3 different quests appear is 'Okay yeah I do have stuff to do now.'

But then I started reading the quests I had and I immediately wanted to shoot myself.

Can somebody ask God why the hell do I need to figure out myself why I have the soul? Can't this system thing figure it out for me? Can't Jesus Christ himself come down from the heavens and dispel all mysteries?

This shit is so eerie and I hate the horror genre.

And then I have to assemble all the pieces of a domino? And then the reward is just 'victory'?

I said I didn't like sandbox games, but even I would prefer that to this giant sign that says 'SOMETHING BAD IS GOING TO HAPPEN TO YOU.'

Gah, and who the heck is my benefactor anyways?

And then the door opened.

I suddenly snapped back to reality, as I turned to face the figure in the doorway and…

…Is that a child?

No, wait, do humans even have the ability to have completely pink hair?

Hold on, don't I have a skill for this? Like… [Observe].

Dori

Title: Lord Sangemah Bay

Professions: Merchant.

This little child is nicknamed 'Lord Sangemah Bay'?

Despite me wearing a mask, Dori wore an unimpressed face as she immediately read my thoughts, "I can tell what you're thinking. I'm short, not young."

Okay, correction. This small young lady is 'Lord Sangemah Bay'? Seriously? What did she do to get such a cool title?

Dori didn't answer that one though, as instead she says, "So, what brings someone down from a portal crashing straight onto the floor in my palace?"

I blinked, feeling extremely exposed because I hadn't thought of an answer to this question, causing me to scramble for an answer, and I quickly decided to avoid the question and focus on something else, "I crashed?"

I mean, that tracks. I was falling down. But… I don't feel sore at all?

Dori nodded, "You cracked my floor! By the way, you're paying for that."

"Hah?!" I wheezed, "Literally less than an hour at this place and I'm already in debt?!" I asked loudly in disbelief.

How the hell do I already owe money?!

Dori waved it off, "We can talk about you paying up later. Speaking of, I'm Dori. Now, what's your name?"

"My name's Fuse." I answered, before asking a very important question, "Uh, sorry about the floor. Can I uhh… I don't have any money on me, can you just waive that fee?"

Dori shakes her head and looks a bit miffed, "I don't let people not pay me mora. Speaking of, how did you even get here anyways?"

Is mora the currency here?

Yeah, that makes sense.

Now, how the hell do I answer that?

Option A would be to just tell her the truth and likely end up in a mental asylum. Although, I don't know if that's what actually would happen. Maybe people randomly appearing from portals is common in Genshin?

Actually, let me just ask, "Is falling from portals not very common around here?"

Dori just looks at me weirdly, "Is it normal from where you're from?"

Yeah, that's a no.

Option B would just be to make something up, but I have no idea if that A rank socials can expose me.

Although, if that fails, I could probably just tell the truth and then omit the fact that I died, got to meet a god, died again, and then got to go here.

Welp, time to see if I can bullshit this.

I cleared my throat, "Ahem, no, falling from portals is not common from where I'm from. However, I was fighting against an army of traitors from my home country, and then I…" I hesitated, because I was about to say that I won but I didn't want to make myself look stupid, and instead said, "Had to make a fighting retreat! At which point I… Fell into a portal and ended up here."

Wow, that was awful. The worst lying since Trump's presidency. How did I live 4 years under Trump's administration and not learn a thing about lying?

Dori seemed to agree with me as she looked very unimpressed, "Uhuh, and Rex Lapis will show up behind me and give me a billion mora. Some of your story sounded true, but you were really trying to stretch it."

My shoulders drooped at the criticism, "Look, the way I got here was super embarrassing. I don't want to talk about it."

Dori actually laughed at that, "You know what? Sure, I'll accept that!"

Wait, that actually got her off my back? I didn't even intend for that to happen!

Dori calmed herself and started to switch the conversation, "Now, can you at the very least tell me what nation you're from?"

"America, '' I said automatically without thinking of it, because why would I need to think twice about telling someone I come from glorious America? And it's literally just social etiquette.

And then I mentally killed myself because I've come to realize that I'm just a moron.

Dori's eyes flashed with confusion for a moment before widening and suddenly gaining insight into my soul, "Wait, tell me, did you come from another world?"

I AM THE WORST TIMELINE.

"...Uh…" I grasped at the air for answers that won't come, and then I eventually just settled for, "...Well… Do people from other worlds come around often?"

Dori's eyes flashed with something as she smiled, "Well, well, well, Mr. Fuse! It seems as if I've lucked out into becoming your very own personal tour guide across the continent of Teyvat! We can talk about money later, right now, you need to get familiar with my home!"

…What?

Your luck has increased slightly!

Your luck has increased to F.

"...What?" I blankly let go into the air. Did I just magic my way into a winning hand here?

Dori kept her smile, "It's not often that someone from another world comes around, you know! And all the business opportunities that might come from you are just unending! C'mon, I can see talent when I see it. Won't you accept my offer?"

"I…" I let more meaningless air out of my throat. What even is the correct answer here?

Well, yes is probably the only answer, considering the other option will likely make her very upset and put me in a grave somewhere.

I don't want to find out if Sangemah Bay is like a major crime gang or something. That would suck a lot.

"...Sure. I could use a tour guide."

Dori smiled even brighter as she took my hand and shook it, "Glad to see you see reason, Mr. Fuse! Now, I actually have a few appointments in the nearest city. Why don't we talk about Teyvat while we walk there?"

"Yeah, okay, sure. I can do that."

You have completed a quest: Lord Sangemah Bay.

Objective: convince your benefactor to let you stay [Complete]

Reward: Minor increase in confidence and charm, 1 gacha token, 1000 mora.

Addendum: We have passed!

Your Confidence has increased to F.

Your Charm has increased to F.

Oh, another one of those gambling things!

"Say, Dori, can I actually stay here for like a minute or two to gather my thoughts before I go out to join you?" I asked, wanting to open my token before getting my lore dump.

Dori nods, "Sure, I'll just stay outside your door. Take as much time as you need!"

And so, she left the room and shut the door, leaving me in silence.

Wow, I survived.

I mean, it was a really poor effort by me, but hey, I lived and that's all I needed!

Now, let's see this token…

Common Item obtained.

[Modern Desk - A modern-style desk, fit with 2 drawers in it. When you put this item in your inventory, anything on or inside the desk will stay with the desk.]

…Damn, okay. That's not really a great start.

I sighed, doing some light stretches just to hype myself up before opening the door to the world beyond.

Here's hoping that my journey won't end badly…

In the deepest parts of the void,

Shapeshifter.

As he waved off another gamer to another adventure, he felt a little bored while waiting for his job to give him another interesting person to mess around with.

…Damn, being stuck up here sucks. It's not the first time he's wished to be free from this job, but he and his siblings were all forced into it by the laws of the universe, and hey, that's something even he can't fight. All he wants is something interesting to happen!

…Although, speaking of interest, he wonders what that American is doing right now. Watching gamers start their journeys is almost always fun.

Although, the worst thing about gamers is that they're always the same when they eventually complete the tutorial and they get access to the skill creation ability. Then, it's all just boring from there. So the only part worth watching are their tutorials, where their options are limited and they aren't very experienced.

Sure, it's only been probably less than a day since he's started, but when you're stuck in a void, you take what you can get. The last time something interesting came in here was when that super rich guy was screaming and hollering about how he couldn't have made a mistake that got himself killed, only to immediately turn heel and say dying was the greatest thing that could've happened to him when he realized the gift he was getting.

Ah, good times. Now, about that American…

So, he peers into the universe and looks for a 'Fuse' and…

…Huh, that's weird.

…Where is he?

Did he… No, why would his soul already be eaten? That's the usual way someone evades his sight, by being literally erased from their world. But… On the first day?

Where did he even send Fuse anyway?

He checked his clipboard and… He was sent to World of Warcraft?

Well, maybe he really did live in the worst timeline and ended up in front of a soul-eating demon as soon as he spawned, but… Usually, the only time the universe did that was when the gamer was a prick, and Fuse was just dumb, not a prick.

…Maybe the universe is a Trump supporter?

Shapeshifter laughed a bit at his own joke. But even he couldn't stop himself from continuing to wonder…

…Where the hell is Fuse?

AN:

I was thinking about uploading chapter 1 on July 4th, but I was only 2 chapters into writing and I didn't want to show my hand that early and be stressed trying to write a chapter every 2 weeks.

…That sounds pretty possible, though.

But alas, it's July 7th now, and that opportunity has long passed.

Instead, I hope to upload this on Labor Day so that I can still upload this on an American Holiday.

Well, whatever, enjoy whatever day this happens to come out on!

[Did you see how I conveniently threw the god out of the story? I'm so genius, I know.]

[Also no Fuse's soul isn't being eaten.]

(I ended up uploading this a week early, mostly because I thought this chapter really isn't worth 2 weeks waiting for, and I managed to get a whole chapter done in like 5 days, which is great for me.)

(Anyways, 2 weeks from now, it'll be a new chapter and we'll go with our scheduled 2 weeks.)

(And though I may pre-write these, I only have 3 pre-written chapters as a buffer, which will probably be my average. So if you want to see something, I can probably fit it in depending on what you guys write in those reviews.)
