Title: Mudblood
"All right, Evans?" James asked, the tone of his voice suddenly changing to a more pleasant, deeper, and mature tone, as if he was trying to hide the fact that he had Severus bound in a thick length of rope that surrounded his body.
Lily could see that the rope was tight enough to cut off Severus' circulation as his hands started to turn a light purple color. Lily rolled her eyes, annoyed by James' demeanor. She continued to stomp her way over until she was afoot away from James and his gang of misfits.
"Leave him alone," Lily repeated, looking at James with every sign of great disgust. "What has he ever done to you?" Lily asked, hating the way her friend was being treated. Severus does nothing but mind his own business, yet James took great pleasure in making his life missable.
"Well," James said, appearing to deliberate the point, "it's more the fact that he exists more than anything else, if you get what I mean…" James laughed along with many of the students who were watching this take place, including Sirius and Peter who liked to follow James around like little puppies.
Lily shook her head, repulsed by the whole thing. "You think you're funny?" Lily asked coldly. "I got news for you, you're nothing but an arrogant bullying toerag, Potter. Now, leave him alone!" Lily ordered as she pressed her lips firmly together.
"I will if you go out with me, Evans," James said snarkily. "Go on…go out with me, and I'll never lay a wand on old Snivelly again," James chuckled as behind him the impediment jinx was wearing off. Severus was beginning to inch towards his fallen wand once he was able to wiggle free of his binds.
"I wouldn't go out with you if it was a choice between you and the giant squid, I pick the squid," Lily spat. "I'm sure he makes better company than you."
"Bad luck, Prongs," Sirius chuckled, turning back to Severus, "OY!" But it was too late, Severus managed to grab his wand and directed it straight at James. There was a flash of light and a gash appeared on James cheek, splattering his robes with blood. James whirled around; a second flash of light, and Snape was hanging upside down in the air, his robes falling over his head to reveal skinny, pallid legs and a pair of graying underpants. Many people in the crowd started cheering as Sirius, James and Peter roared with laughter.
Lily let out a breath between her clenched teeth, furious. "Put him down. Now!" Lily yelled over the laughter of students that were supposed to be their peers.
"Certainly," James said as he flicked his want upwards, smiling as Snape fell to a crumpled heap on the ground.
Disentangling himself from his robes, he quickly got to his feet, wand up in the air, but before he could cast a curse back at James, Sirius raised his wand. "Locomotor Mortis."
Severus fell to the ground, knees locked together as another burst of laughter filled the area, adding to his humiliation.
"LEAVE HIM ALONE!" Lily shouted, getting her own wand out and aiming it at Sirius and James.
"Ah, Evans, don't make me hex you" James said with a bit of an eyeroll.
"Don't test me Potter! I will send you to the infirmary for a week. Now, take the curse off of him unless you really want to see what I can do," Lily threatened, having every intention of showing James just how powerful she was.
James let out a loud sigh, making a big show of it as he turned towards Severus and muttered the countercurse. "There you go," James said, placing his wand back in its holster as Severus struggled to his feet again. "You're lucky Evans was here Snivellus—"
"I don't need help from a filthy little mudblood like her," Seveus spat out of anger, his eyes widening once he realized what he had just said.
Lily blinked. Out of everyone, she never thought Severus would be the one to call her a mudblood, a word that meant she was impure, a word that made her feel like she didn't belong in the magical world.
"...fine," Lily said coldly. "I won't bother in the future…and I'd wash your pants if I were you, Snivellus," Lily said before storming off.
Severus couldn't believe what he just said to Lily, to the one person who ever cared about him. "Lily, wait!" Severus called out as he chased after her. "Lily! Wait! I never meant to call you that, it just.."
"Just what?" Lily shouted as she turned around to face Severus, "Slipped out? Is that what you were going to say? MUDBLOOD DOESN'T JUST SLIP OUT!" Lily screamed as tears started to fall. "I have done nothing but make excuses for you believing that there was some small part of you that was good. A part of you that I could reach out to you but now…now I see."
"What does that mean?" Severus asked.
"Are you, Severus Snape, planning on becoming a Death Eater, a group of people whose goal is to kill off people like me? People who want to see all Mudbloods dead," Lily spat. "Are you planning on getting the mark when you come of age?" Lily asked, and the silence that followed was more than she ever wanted to hear.
"I guess I have my answer then…I'm done, Severus. You had one friend in this world, and you destroyed it. You've chosen your way, I've chosen mine. Don't ever talk to me again," Lily ordered before turning around and walking away forever.
