Chapter 4: Fitting In
Agent BM: Thx
Mr. Martinez had instructed Kevin and Lucy to act as Sophie's guides. The twins showed her the cafeteria, library, and the playground.
"So is this any different from your old school, Sophie?" asked Kevin.
"Not really. A school is a school." Sophie replied.
"Well I'm sure you'll like this school." Lucy told her.
"I think I will."
When school was over, Sophie, Kevin, and Lucy waited in the car rider area to be picked up.
"I had a nice day you guys." mentioned Sophie.
"Glad to hear that." Kevin said.
"And you'll like Mr. Martinez too. He's a good teacher." added Lucy.
Then Zeke pulled up in his car, Sophie said goodbye, and got in the car.
"Hi, Dad. Hi, Zack." she greeted.
"Fifi." said Zack.
"Hey, Sophie. How was your first day?" Zeke questioned.
"It was pretty good. My teacher's nice and so are my classmates."
"That's good. Now we don't we go see your mom, and you can tell her all about it?"
"Yeah."
And off they went.
At the hospital, Sophie told Honey all about her first day at school.
"(Coughs) Your new school sounds nice, Sophie. I can't wait to see it." Honey told her.
"And I also made a couple new friends, and my teacher is nice." Sophie explained.
Honey smiled.
"I'm proud of you, sweetie."
"Thanks, Mom."
When visiting hours were over, Zeke took Sophie and Zack home.
"I think Mom's looking better, Dad." Sophie told him.
"Yes, her doctor says she's responding to the medicine." Zeke informed.
That made Sophie smile.
As the days went by, Sophie adjusted to her new school. She did her assignments, played with Kevin and Lucy, helped out around the house. One day, the Shaws went to the grocery store.
"Okay, do you think you can grab some mashed potatoes?" Zeke asked.
"Sure, Dad." Sophie replied.
Zack then reached after his sister.
"Hey, buddy Sophie's will be right back."
"He can come with me."
"Okay, but keep an eye on him."
Zeke took Zack out of the little cart seat, put him on the ground, and Sophie grabbed his hand and led him away. They went to the aisle with the mashed potatoes, and looked around. Suddenly, Sophie heard familiar voices.
"Hi, Sophie."
She looked up, and Kevin and Lucy walking towards her.
"Hi, guys." Sophie greeted.
"Hey Sophie, funny running into you here." Kevin told her.
"Dad and I are just grocery shopping."
"We're here with our mom. You know how it is. Talk about boring am I right? Being dragged shopping." Lucy told.
"Yeah, a little."
Zack then toddled up to Sophie.
"Fifi." he said.
"Fifi? Kevin wondered.
"Is this your little brother you told us about?" Lucy wanted to know.
Sophie looked slightly embarrassed.
"Yeah, this is Zack."
"Fifi." Zack said again.
The twins gave a quick giggle as Lucy kneeled down.
"Learning to talk I see." she observed.
Sophie nodded.
"Zack's too little to say my real name so he calls me Fifi. Zack this is Kevin and Lucy."
Zack touched Kevin's chest which made him giggle.
"He seems curious." said Kevin.
Zack then tried to touched Lucy's chest, but Lucy was quick to cover her necklace.
"Please don't touch that, it's special to me." Lucy told him.
"He's a toddler it's his job to be curious." Sophie explained.
Zack pointed at Kevin.
"In."
And then to Lucy.
"C."
The twins looked confused.
"He's saying your names." Sophie explained.
"Oh, well that's kinda cute." Lucy replied.
"Not what I expected him to say. But he'll learn more in time." Kevin said.
The kids then parted, and Sophie got the potatoes and she and Zack went back to their dad.
One day at school, the kids had P.E. class.
"All right, everyone. Time to head to the gym. And if you have any jewelry or any other accessories please leave them here in the classroom." Mr. Martinez instructed.
Some of the students took off their stuff, and even though she didn't want to, Sophie took off her mom's pearls.
"Nice granny necklace, Sophie." teased one of the girls.
Sophie just scowled, she wasn't going to let some smart remarks bother her.
"Hey, leave her alone." called a voice.
The girls looked to see Lucy, looking angry.
"Jewelry is jewelry. It doesn't matter what it is."
The girls just huffed off, and Lucy walked over to Sophie.
"Don't let them bother you, Sophie."
"I don't."
After they took off their jewelry, and left the classroom.
During P.E., the kids played dodge ball and when it was over, they went back to the classroom. As Sophie put her pearls back on, she glanced over at Lucy, who had just put her earrings back on. She slipped her jacket back on before rummaging through her desk, getting a worried look on her face after a moment.
Her hand then shot up in the air, she seemed scared.
"Alright class, for our next lesson we will, yes Lucy?" said Mr. Martinez.
"Mr. Martinez, my necklace is gone. I think someone took it." Lucy told him.
Mr. Martinez then walked over to Lucy's desk to have a look.
"Let me take a look here. Isn't that it right there?" he wondered.
"No that's my bracelet. My necklace isn't here. I need my necklace, it's important to me." Lucy explained.
Sophie started to grow concerned for Lucy, she seemed really distressed. She wondered what was so special about that necklace, was it her moms too? Was it expensive? Mr. Martinez then stood in front of the class.
"Alright class, it seems we have a thief among us. Need I remind you I have a strict no stealing policy in my class. But I'm a reasonable guy, so whoever has Lucy's necklace please return it right now, and I'll let you off with only a warning." he told.
No one in the class answered or stood up.
"So it's gonna be like that huh? Look I know Lucy's necklace is beautiful and all but it ain't yours to take whoever has it. Starting right now I'm gonna search everyone's desks and bags one at a time. And if I don't find it by the time I finish my inspection, no recess for three weeks for any of you."
The class didn't take that news very well and started talking amongst each other.
"You sure it's not in your backpack, Lucy?" asked a girl named Trixie.
"Or in those pockets on your jacket?" asked another girl named Jenny.
"It's not in my bag, I left it hidden behind my books. And I don't use these front pockets." explained Lucy.
Sophie went up to comfort Lucy.
"It's okay Lucy, we'll find it, it has to be here somewhere." Sophie comforted.
"How do we know you don't have it, Sophie?" Jenny interrogated.
"Why would I want Lucy's necklace? I don't even like the style of it." said Sophie.
"So you wouldn't mind being checked if Mr Martinez checks you next?" suggested Trixie.
"I welcome it, because I'm not a thief. I was raised better than that." Sophie replied.
Mr. Martinez then went over to Sophie's desk, and looked in it.
"Nothing in here." Mr. Martinez said.
He went around the desks, but didn't find the necklace. Lucy got even more upset and angry. Kevin tried to keep her calm, but she ended up having a tantrum. As Kevin and Mr. Martinez tried to calm her down, Sophie saw something odd.
She noticed something sticking out of Jenny's backpack.
"Hey Jenny, what's that?" she asked, pointing to her backpack.
Jenny quickly noticed what Sophie was referring to, and quickly covered it up.
"Nothing."
Mr. Martinez noticed her strange behavior, and walked over.
"Jenny, would you mind opening your backpack?"
She was about to protest, but Mr. Martinez gave her a stern look. Jenny unzipped her backpack and there was the necklace. It turns out Trixie and Jenny had been in on it together. Trixie took out of Lucy's desk before leaving, then gave it to Jenny to put in her backpack when they came back.
Mr. Martinez sent both girls to the principal's office where they would get their detentions. Kevin and Lucy thanked Sophie, and they could see that this was the start of a great friendship.
