Chapter 69: Trials and Secrets
Kankuro's POV
After learning the truth I somehow found myself deep in the Sunagakure's law books. The answers I wanted to look for wasn't something simple and too specific I couldn't rely on someone else to help me look.
The answer I have spent the last few days losing sleep over has been for a way to legitimize Yukino's first child. Although the council may tolerate her for the betterment of the Kazekage family they would most certainly oppose a stranger's child being welcomed into the family especially one with zero blood ties to us. I could already see every single way they would be able to ostracize them or push them away. I wouldn't even put it past them to come up with some sort of excuse to send them to a different nation just so they wouldn't be a threat to the twin's positions. No loving mother would want that kind of life for their child. Yukino certainly didn't. Which is why leaving was so appealing to her.
Which was even more of a reason for me to look for answers that could appease both sides. I'm all my scenarios I kept going back to the mystery father of that child. 'Who were you to be more important than the Kazekage?' No matter how fondly they seemed to look at each other the moment their eyes met there was always that small lingering sadness when she looked away. The way her hand covered her necklace and heart in guilt always protecting it. I knew of its significance and whose gift it was he knew that look of longing and mourning all too well. 'You remind me more of that old man in the worst of ways.'
Feeling my eyes fall close I succumbed to it for a moment before snapping awake. Noticing my empty hands I quickly bolted up and spotted the book on the floor. Picking it up I was about to flip back to the page I was on when the word "child" caught my eye.
In the case of unfaithfulness on the part of the wife, the bastard child is to be given up to the orphanage. To prove their devotion to the family they shall never see or make contact with the bastard child the moment they are given up. If this simple act is not followed, the child will be relocated outside the village. If their loyalty is broken again relocation to another nation is not an option for one of the Kazekage's bloodline.
Reading the case it was tied to and led to the creation of this law I snapped the book shut and saw this as a sign to continue tomorrow. Hopefully, an amended version of this law was somewhere I just had to find it. But looking at the large library I looked down at the book I found with the tiniest crumb of information that related to my question and I felt like crying. If this was a sign of what my search would be like I could kiss a good night's sleep goodbye for the next few months.
・・・
Quietly entering my home I locked the doors behind me as all I had in mind right now was my bed and alarm I would have to wake up for in 4 hours.
"Staying up late is not the smartest move before a mission. "
Suddenly a lamp by the corner of the room flicked on revealing my brother. "Gaara wha-what are you doing there in the dark? It's late." I quickly said, taking a few careful steps towards the stairs hoping he would just let me pass.
"Kankuro."
"Yes?"
"I know about your recent research."
"I-I can explain-"
"It's alright. You weren't being subtle." Gaara interrupted him, "If you have a child I was unaware of you should have told me." Standing up he walked up to me placing a tense hand on my shoulder in an act to be reassuring but nervous in this new territory. "We can work together to come up with something. Kankuro I'm your brother you don't have to worry about me judging you." Tired eyes looked up trying to be positive and reassuring. Oh how little he knew about who this was really about.
"I…" Staring at my brother's eyes… the sincerity he showed… It was too much. "I can't do this." I cracked breaking the agreement I made with her. "Gaara… the kid isn't mine… it's yours."
"What?"
"Listen I didn't mean to keep it a secret I wanted to tell you-"
"How long have you known?"
"I found out a few days ago when they did the checkup. I overheard the head priest chastizing her for being reckless. Listen I was going to tell you-" Pulling away the stunned look in his eyes as he turned to the hall behind me told me he was going to get answers from the source. Quickly reaching out to stop him to give me a chance to hear me out I ended up with my palm on his shield. Feeling my palms sweat as my brain racked through ideas on how to de-escalate the situation I was not willing to send him in there to argue only to end up in her fleeing and never seeing her again. "Gaara please hear me out… or you two might end up saying things you'll regret."
"...Alright."
Yukino's POV
As the days passed Nori's words echoed in the back of my mind as the stress of not knowing when or if Gaara would find out. I know Kankuro couldn't keep this a secret from his brother for long. The guilt would eventually eat at him and confess but I knew him well enough to be able to explain things better to Gaara than I would.
Knock knock
Snapping out of my own thoughts I bolted up and tensed up once I took a second to sense who was on the other side of the door. Taking a deep breath I opened the door. As much as I tried to meet his eyes my eyes couldn't even go past his chin. "Close the door." I wanted to say meaning to be firm but speaking as softly as a mouse in a library. Sitting before my loom as if I had been doing this all along I traced my work noticing the tremble in my fingers twitching at the contact almost as if it was burning to the touch. No matter how much I expected this outcome I still wasn't ready. What was he going to say? How was he going to start? She was ready to be honest but she was afraid of how he would react. Wait. Was he waiting for her to start?
"Do you–"
"Am I–"
"Ah sorry. You go first." I offered.
Hearing the couch shift under his weight I heard his sigh. "Am I that unreliable?" He asked his voice so hurt and pitiful I couldn't help but turn my body to him.
"No no! Not at all I trust you but it's the council I can't trust." Taking in a deep breath I recounted the things that created that distrust. "In just a decade alone just how many council members had to be replaced because they were in some scheme to assassinate you? They created you and yet still want to get rid of you and for what? Just to put your unwilling brother as the Kazekage?" Scoffing at the ridiculousness of it all I was left speechless at the political situation in Sunagakure. Never in my life had I seen a nation's own elders conspiring so much and so often to eliminate their head of state. It wasn't odd in history for them to do so to a puppet, tyrant, or someone weak. No matter how I looked at it Gaara didn't fit the usual reasons. He was well-spoken, strong, and even merciful even though he had the power to literally bury anyone in sand and leave no evidence. Hand on my chest I shook my head at what I knew. There was no rationale for it.
"Yukino," kneeling before me he held up my hands and stared at me, "it's an age of peace now things may turn out differently."
"Gaara." Turning away from his eyes full of hope I bit my lip gathering the guts to state what we both knew. "I may have been asleep these last few years but I know exactly what they think and what lengths they are willing to go to get their way. If they can't get to you, they will go after those closest to you, just like they did to the bride THEY chose." Letting out a frustrated sigh I stated the obvious. "Kankuro is safe because they need someone from the Kazekage blood to take your place and there is no way they will put Temari in that position now that she is married to another village." Before I could stop myself the words spilled out. How many years had I spent in this village watching it hate a boy they created? Now that they had grown beyond their intended role they wanted to get rid of them. I would understand if it was for his cruel acts of the past but the fact that he had punished himself and sacrificed his life and health over and over again for this village was enough to show that the bloodthirsty boy of the past had been shed long ago.
"I know…" he spoke softly knowing the nature of his relationship with the council and those who still hated him in the village. Although on the surface the village adored him he knew in the shadows that were there some couldn't forgive him for the kills of his past. He understood that and was alright with it so long as it was only directed at him and no one else.
"..." Hesitating as silence filled the space between us I took one look at his expecting eyes and caved. "I… why? I thought you didn't want to be a father."
"You're right. I'm not ready." Looking down his hand shakily reached out to my flat stomach his fingers barely putting any pressure. His eyes were full of awe before he pulled away as if he would do harm if his hand lingered for too long. "I'm afraid beyond words. But I love you and now you carry my children. It wouldn't be right of me to leave this responsibility on your shoulders alone."
"You know I won't be alone. I have my summons, my friends, my clan, and even the shrine. I am miraculously lucky to have them if it weren't for them I may have considered my stay in Suna or Konoha. But you know as well as I do that the great nations are just too risky. They may provide safety and wealth but they are also targets."
"I know…" Looking down at his hands. I could feel his reluctance in his next words. "I can't follow you to where you will be going… I know it's the safest option for you but I still want to help. I almost lost you… I don't want something to happen to you knowing I could have helped… or just done something." Looking up slowly I met his bright eyes that shone with determination. How could I not smile at the sight of those seafoam eyes?
"Well luckily for you we'll soon be bound. That won't only tell you when I leave my home, but also where I am and in the worst case tell you when I've been seriously injured. I'll make this promise to you if my home is ever in danger I will leave the confines of my home and let you know." Placing a hand on my stomach I hummed in thought. "As for them, the best way to keep them safe is if…" Making a mental connection with him I told him.
"I know…" Having seen firsthand her methods of protection he knew what he stood to lose. "I know you would think like this. Is that the only way?" He asked knowing well it the best option they had on hand.
"You are too caring. I know you, won't have it in you to remain contactless. Eventually, someone will find out."
"I know." Thinking he came up with an idea of his own. "Like you said my brother isn't a threat in fact they want him to succeed. So let him be our intermediary." He offered knowing full well if someone discovered exchanges between me and Kankuro especially if children were involved that they would assume the children were his.
"Alright, that would work. But Gaara… will you be alright with this much?"
"I will." He said with a soft smile on his face as if trying to reasure me. But I knew better just how much this would hurt someone. "Just…" His words came out quietly before clearing his throat, "please keep your end of the promise."
"I will. I will ensure you know of every momentous occasion even if you don't know why I'm doing it. I know it will hurt you deeply so please at the end of this imprisonment blame it all on me. Don't harbor any ill will towards your brother."
"Alright." Reaching out I gently stroked away the hair from his scar. With a smile, I held his face and chuckled as a name came to mind. "Airi. If we have a girl I'll name her that."
Understanding its meaning a small loving smile bloomed on his face. "I thought you were planning on being discrete."
"Well, I have to give you a hint somehow. You may forget but that doesn't mean you won't be able to remember." Holding his face I stared at his seafoam eyes for a moment more burning his smile into a memory knowing that he may never look at me the same way ever again once this was done and the reality of the situation and what he missed in the years to come finally settle. "Seal," I whispered as his body slumped forward.
Knowing the confusion and hurt he will go through once he wakes up and heard of the news with no idea of what the truth really was. I knew I would have to bite my tongue to keep the secret and so would his brother. "When this is all over direct all your hatred to me and forgive Kankuro." I whispered this in his ear hoping he would subconsciously remember it for when the day came.
Creating a few water tendrils I gently picked him up and took him back to his room.
・・・
As I left his room I saw Kankuro standing by the stairs. His eyes were furrowed and his jaw was tight. Without saying a word I walked past him as I took a step down he spoke. "I will never forgive you for this."
"I know." I lowered my head. "But it's what had to be done." I kept repeating sticking to my decision feeling it was right. Hoping it was. "Right now my only mission is to protect them. As I promised I will involve you in every important possible milestone. Just name it and I will try to comply without question."
"Every possible milestone." He mocked repeating my words, "Every first should be his to see but I know he won't even get to see half of them without exposing you or them."
"You're right. Pictures can only do so much even if I make sure to remember everything even down to the last detail it is not the same as experiencing the moment itself. So let's talk later about our arrangements and what we can do to close the gap as much as possible."
A week later…
Receiving the go-ahead for the trial not long after Nori and Kichi returned to the island I did some final prep and began to empty and clear out my room. Putting on my garments I started with some baggy pants before putting on the robe I designed with the silk I was given. Putting on an obi belt with my pouch of tools and tiny scrolls I adjusted everything on my person from my gloves to my sleeves as I sat on the bed and waited patiently for sunset to approach.
As I did a knock at the door drew my attention. Opening the door Gaara poked his head through. "Are you ready?" he asked.
"Almost." I responded as I got up and approached him almost ready to be taken to the village entrance.
"Yukino." He spoke my name as he grabbed my hand as I was making my way out of the room. "...I'll wait for you."
"And so will I," I confessed turning my body to face him and to take in his clueless eyes. " You know there are times when we have to make tough decisions… I hope you will be able to forgive me for them. But know you have no obligation to do so."
"What are you–?"
"Just some ramblings don't pay too much attention to my words." Looking down at his hands I pulled up one of his sleeves and traced the veins feeling the shiver his body gave at the slight graze. With one hand I performed the necessary signs and placed the seal on his arm showing as a mark on both our arms. "It's time."
"I know." Looking at the mark briefly before pulling the sleeve back into place. He put it behind his back before offering his other hand. "Will you hold my hand until the last minute?" He asked as a teenage boy would ask a girl for a dance.
"How could I deny your request Kazekage-sama." I teased reciprocating, this small private gesture until the moment we would have to inevitably let go when we had to exit the manor.
・・・
Meeting up with Kankuro at the village entrance I gave a brief explanation. "Now that we both have been marked I put a time activation limit on it of 20 days. I will let my summons elaborate as the time is approaching. Summoning my foxes without assistance I was greeted by two grey foxes I've never seen before.
"Perfect time." One said while the other opened up a cloth and held it up lowering their head.
Looking down at what it was offering I took the familiar spiral stone that would prevent me from using my portals. "As per the rules allow us to remind you. Due to your compromised condition, you have been given a small extension. What would be a 2-week allowance is now 20 days to return home. You pass the first trial if you can avoid capture or getting mauled by us. You must also ensure that the stone you hold makes it back to the shrine to pass. Understood?" Nodding in confirmation they then held out a piece of paper. "This is the location to the only thing that will aid you this whole trial." Looking at it carefully I saw a drawing of a map with a drawing of a cozy coast with a boat. "Remember it." Holding it out to their companion they took it and it went up in flames before my eyes. "The trial will begin when you hear this sound–"
FWEEEEET
Their companion let out a loud sharp whistle that pierced our eardrums. Bearing through the pain I endured it and waited for it to end.
"On another note, Kuzunoha-sama has this message for you. Ahem. My tiny kit how much you've grown I remember the days when you ran free among the trees until you grew tired and retreated to your burrow…" Feeling something was off as they talked without a point to the story I realized how stupid I was.
"Kankuro, Gaara. Thank you both for everything so please don't look for me. I will reach out somehow." Putting on my veiled hat as the fox kept rambling about some other aspect of my childhood knowing it made me lose precious minutes, I gathered as what moisture I could from the air. Making small water platforms to hide my steps, I ran toward the desert knowing that on the other side of the valley, the foxes hunting me down were already on their way.
3rd POV
A day into the desert Yukino took refuge in some ruins as the sand began to pick up, closing up any holes with ice she leaned against the wall to calm her breathing. After sprinting the whole way here to regain her headstart she made sure to keep a good pace to not to tire herself out. Remembering where the stars were before the sandstorm hit she estimated she had a day and a half days worth more of travel until she reached the land of river's border.
"I found you. You red-headed vixen."
"!" Feeling the ground shift the ruins around her she quickly called back her water forming an ice shield around her as she watched the ruins collapse around her dragging her down below. Happening in a matter of moments she loosened her body before her shield reached the bottom. Covering her head she flinched as she heard the ice crack but not break.
Slowly getting up she cupped her hands in front of her face and hissed ice into her hands. Molding the ice into water she lit it up and pushed up it through the ice encasing her. Lighting up the dark cavern she lowered her ice shield knowing the identity of the one who dragged her down here.
The first thought that crossed her mind was to bow down and pretend to be someone who had no idea about what was happening but the choice words she heard before the fall here made it pretty clear they knew exactly who she was. Before she could even speak however she heard a familiar hissing sound and quickly curled up. Reflexively the water shot towards her and quickly hardened encasing her in a protective shield as sand encased her once more.
Curled up in the dark her eyes widened keeping her eyes trained for the tiniest sliver of light. Controlled breathing she waited guessing for their next move as she heard the sand slitter around her trying to find a weak point in her shield. Gathering herself for a fight the sand parted enough for her to stare up at the yellow eye staring her down.
"Stop cowering and fight me."
She would have done so but right now she wasn't in the mood for a fight to ruin her headstart. "Did the future play out as you expected?"
"You vixen you purposefully didn't tell me I would lose to the fox and his brat!" He yelled, his grip closing in on her little protective dome. "How did you go back? Do it again and warn me! Now that fox's ego is bigger than ever before!" Yapping about the fight Yukino nodded as she sat in her shield nodding along as the one tail's voice pounded at her head. Holding in the pain from their close proximity she waited for that brief moment when they stopped to breathe.
"I'm sorry but I can't do that. Not out of choice but because of an inability to do it. Although the ability is mine the choice isn't. It's been like that my whole life and I don't know who is making the calls." She confessed word vomiting a quick and simple explanation feeling time slip through her fingers like sand the more she entertained the giant tanuki.
Quiet for a moment she felt their eyes stare her down trying to guage the truthfulness of her sentence. "How useless."
Sand enveloping her vision once more she sat in the dark waiting for any signs of pressure and mentally preparing herself to fight until she was shot out from the ground. Spinning in the air the brief glimpse of the sky was enough to know the outside was safe. In seconds she timed the flips and uncurled herself. Turning her ice into a pair of water wings she began to glide the rest of the descent pushing the encounter she just had with the one tails to the back of her mind as all she cared about was to cover as much distance as she could as quickly as possible now that the skies cleared. With the stars out and her returning to ground level, she only hoped the little detour and flight would be enough to throw off her pursuers a little bit, or at least hoped they hadn't spotted her yet.
Yukino's POV
A day into the land of rivers I stuck to my plan and hunkered down near a river gathering as much food as I could. From gathering wild berries and fruits to catching fish and smoking them to preserve them longer I began to salivate at the calories and protein I had been missing the last few days of my travel.
Holding one of the many fish I caught I pulled out my tanto to gut it wanting to grill this one. Stomach grumbling at the juicy fish before me I froze as the birds flying away in the distance caught my attention. Lifting my blade I turned it to look at the trees behind me as my eyes scanned the direction the bird flew from. Hearing metal cutting through the air I quickly dodged as a shuriken hit the fish I was going to gut. Hearing the wind rustle the leaves I kept my eyes on the trees.
"Stop playing who is there!" I yelled out to the trees sensing a presence there but not sensing their chakra. Either she was unfortunate enough to run into a stranger or they found her. Either way, she was unhappy about the new presence interrupting her.
"Hehehehe" Hearing chuckling from five sources around me including the other side of the river I raised my blade quickly blocking three incoming shuriken, noticing the wires they were attached to I quickly jumped up drawing some water from the river to create platforms. 'To hell with the food.' Lifting the water from the river I flooded the area latching to anything that moved. Snagging a few I lifted them up, and encased the grey foxes in a shield of ice like I've done to myself just a few days ago. "Mercy please!" They yelled between whines and curled themselves into each other. Seeing the helpless sight before me I faltered for a moment as I saw in them the foxes I grew up with.
But that moment was enough.
Stab
Swaying forward I held my footing and turned to look at my back seeing a grey fox smiling as I was struck through with their katana.
POOF!
Grilling my fish I flinched as the memories and experiences of my shadow clone returned to me. 'So they're southwest. I better head northeast to avoid them then. The rivers were obvious anyways I'll have to dump my river routes for a while. Hah… there goes my rendezvous with my clones to get food. I guess I'll have to lay low in crowds. Hopefully, the various scents throw them off for a bit.' Remembering my routes, Konoha was fortunately not too far of a detour. I had to say I was a bit curious as to how everyone was faring. I knew I couldn't meet everyone but I could just meet one it would be worth it. 'If I do drop by Konoha… the training grounds should be safe. If the food there is scarce I could always play my shamisen for some extra cash.'
That was the point of the trial, self-sufficiency to see if I wanted the position I was striving for. To get there I had to use my head. I could use a scroll's worth of space and anything I chose to carry on my person so I had to plan accordingly. Thinking of the wording using my body as a vessel counted as on my person. With the fox saying nothing before I left Sunagakure I took that as a sign that it was allowed. However, with all that space there was one thing I was allowed to carry, money or jewelry. It made sense really if it was about self-sufficiency and determination then all that goes out the window when you can easily pay someone to get to your destination or hire mercenaries to defend you. Even if I wasn't going to sell my necklace due to sentimentality I still took it off to follow the rules. Just in case I even asked about certain items I would be packing that could be sold for cash easily such as my shamisen. The answer? They laughed saying that such a quality of kouki wood, one gifted by Haruko-sama, would not be bought by a merchant due to fear that it was stolen and no noble would buy it from a rando in the street. Which meant I could use it and my skills for some extra cash. Of course, with my abilities and connections, it won't be difficult to find a quick job doing some light ice sculptures for an event or something.
Finishing my food I checked how the smoked fish were coming along giving it a minute before they were ready. Unsealing a place I staked the fish and stored it before cleaning up the area of any traces that I was there.
・・・
Leaving a few obvious marks of travel thanks to my shadow clones every time one disappeared I got updated on the status of my pursuers and their locations. Of course, now that they knew the general locations of those shadow clones I made a few more to replace those lost, sending them in the opposite direction of the first group of clones even including one following my path. The reasoning behind that move was simple. With some thinking, they would realize that the path the clones weren't taking was my path so I left that clear path for them to follow and waste their time on.
Jumping through the branches a flash of red hair in the distance caught my eye. 'Well well someone seems to be going the same way.' Already hiding my presence I suppressed it even more as I happily snuck up to the woman I've come to enjoy taunting. Hanging from above as she held a branch over her head I knew she must've sensed me already and been trying to avoid me.
"Hiding from someone?" I whispered in her ear as close as I could.
"Eeek!" Jumping away she fell and dragged herself away. "How do you always find me!?"
"Well, it's hard to forget a friend." I stood up and extended a hand with a smile on my face.
Wrinkling her nose she swatted my hand away. "Who says we're friends you've been nothing but a headache to me." She grumbled as she stood up, brushing her clothes off the dirt that got on them.
"Come on Karin don't say that." I chuckled my eyes drifting to the package she held tightly to her chest, as if it was her own heart. "You have to admit it was a nice break from the routine." Rolling her eyes she continued walking as if she wasn't hiding in the bushes a minute ago. "You know since he is now under surveillance what do you say about looking for employment elsewhere? I promise the place is calm and peaceful, and… away from all this." I gestured around us.
"No way. I'm not interested in accepting an offer from someone who dyed their hair to look like me."
"What? It's all-natural. It's a normal change just like how kids born with blonde hair may end up with brown hair as they get older. Also, you can't say my offer is worse than Orochimaru's what does he even offer that is so much better than a place filled with people like you–"
"People like me? I doubt it." Speeding up she jumped up into the trees and I followed right behind her. "Stop following me!"
"Hard to do that when we're both headed in the same direction."
"You." Pressing her lips together she huffed in annoyance. "Fine do what you want it's not like you ever listened when I told you to stop. Why are you here anyway? I thought you were supposed to be under house arrest."
It didn't even come as a surprise that she knew after all her employer/master had one of the best information networks. "I'm just postponing my punishment a bit," I told her honestly. "Right now I'm taking part in a test and I'm a bit preoccupied with my own summons hunting me down."
"Hah," she sighed side eyeing me, "What did you do to make them upset?"
"That's the test."
"Ugh forget I even asked." Turning away she didn't ask for more clarification but didn't tell me to leave again so I tagged along for the company even if said company hated me.
Enjoying the quiet trip I took a good look at the surroundings trying to ingrain it into me, some things looked vaguely familiar. 'Three years were more than I anticipated. Good thing I don't have to rely solely on my memory for this.' Looking over at Karin and her new half-shaven hairstyle my eyes drifted to her reddish eyes.
From her hair and eye color, to her healing ability. I don't know how I did not connect the dots before but she was so similar to Ryota. There was a chance they could be related. I just needed a bit of her blood. "So…" seeing her shoulders drop in annoyance I still continued. "You sure you don't want to take my offer?"
"No." She flatly refused.
"Alright, but can I at least have a sample of your blood? You see–"
"What? No!" Coming to a stop she spun around and quickly backed up.
Trying to salvage this I tried to explain. "Wait-wait-wait it's not like that. I know a guy who's just like you, he even has the same ability."
Narrowing her eyes as she glared at me and held the package tighter. "So what, you think he's family or something, well forget about it. I don't ever remember having a brother or an uncle."
"Alright… forget I even asked." I sighed giving up. The woman was hardheaded I will give her that, it was very hard to make her sway her opinion in certain settings that would be commendable but she had a habit of being stubborn over wrong things. One day though I would have to get a DNA sample from her just to check with Ryota's.
After a day we arrived at one of Konoha's small gates. Aside from our chat the day before we barely spoke but we weren't hostile as we camped out. I could have gathered the sample I wished for but I first needed to focus on gaining her trust if my suspisions were true.
In my own thoughts, I heard a name. "Sakura!" Looking up I saw Karin bolting to the pinkette. Once she was within reach she gave her a look over like a frantic mother. "How are you doing? You look so tired. Have you been resting? What about Sarada?" Asking a whole bunch of questions I was left speechless never expecting them to be so amicable not after the whole Sasuke incident between them.
Putting on a smile I approached and wrapped my arm around Karins's shoulder. "Hey–!"
"Hey Sakura long time no see!"
"?" Confused for a moment, her eyes looked me over before they landed on my eyes. Her mind then made the connection. "Ah Yukino, your hair…"
"Genetics are a funny thing its been doing that slowly over the years. But enough about me congratulations on the baby I didn't bring a gift but just ask for whatever you want and I'll get it for you in a month." I said, based on Karin's worries and questions this Sarada must have been her daughter.
"Don't listen to her here!" Karin's shoulder bumped me to the side as she handed over the package she held like a treasure. "Sarada must've outgrown her last set so I made her new ones they're a bit big but in a few weeks, she'll grow into them."
"Thank you, Karin." Opening it she gasped and cooed at the clothes. "They're beautiful thank you!" Hugging the excited redhead I stood to the side and took a good look at her. Her hair although styled had a few strayed hairs and visible strands as if she combed it with her hands in a rush. The bags under her eyes looked heavy and her body slumped into the hug. Partially covered by Karin's body I could notice the changes to her stomach's shape and slightly enlarged breasts. Key indicators of a recent birth. 'Motherhood must be hard on her and with everyone having their kids at the same time everyone has their hands full at the moment.' Taking the opportunity while they were distracted I walked right into the village giving the guard a wink. In their moment of embarrassment, they forgot to ask for my identification.
・・・
After some instrument playing for enough money to buy some Ichiraku ramen. I was surprised to see Ayame running the shop alongside two employees she was still training. Thankfully Teuchi was now enjoying retirement something I honestly never expected to hear but was happy to know. After a warm meal I found myself under a tree's shade in Senju Park. Although I came here to see how people were doing I knew it would be odd for me to pop up on people's doorstep for a quick hello. Not to mention I had remembered that Temari was now in Konoha and I did not want to run into her in case Kankuro or Gaara had shared news of our relationship. Oh I could imagine now how furious she would be.
Then there was Naruto. Not too long ago I gave a dramatic farewell to him and Hinata didn't even remember me. Now that they married they most likely moved to a new place instead of his old apartment or the Hyuga's manor. I was out of leads in a place that had dramatically changed in just three years and there was no way I was going to summon anyone anytime soon in fear of being found. "Hah…"
"Well well, aren't you supposed to be in Sunagakure?"
Opening my eyes I looked up with squinted eyes seeing a familiar head of silver hair blocking whatever light streamed through the trees. "Kakashi, what took you so long?" I joked knowing that he was also the one I could ask to know about how everyone was doing. Sitting up I noticed what he was wearing. "Wait not you too? You married!?" Quickly standing up I saw the top of the baby's black hair. Tearing up at how small it was I whispered. "I never thought I'd see the day congratulations."
"Sorry to crush your dreams but I'm just babysitting for Sakura."
"Really? What about her dad is he off on a mission?"
"Well… you could say that." He looked away, a bit too suspiciously if I might say. Narrowing my eyes I knew I would have to add investigating Sakura's husband or boyfriend or whatever to my watchlist. Whoever he was I didn't care Sakura was a friend of Naruto's and therefore someone who I would protect if I could. Looking at the baby I inched slowly to Kakashi testing the waters to see if I was allowed. "You could look no one is stopping you." He chuckled.
Feeling a smile break through I gave a firm nod and quickly skipped to his side to get a better look at the baby's face. Reaching out my index carefully brushed away her hair. "Sarada was it?" I cooed seeing the baby react to my voice. "Who's your daddy? That hair doesn't belong to you…" Saying that my eyes bulged as I recognized the shade. The shade of hair I grew up surrounded by.
"It's who you think it is."
"Wha-How!?"
"Hm… you know how life is you leave on a year-long mission with him and come back one day a changed person. In this case with a baby."
"After everything, I'm surprised she even gave him a chance." Looking at the baby I poked her chubby cheeks and brushed my finger lightly over her lashes. "There's no mistaking it's his alright." Seeing her made me think of my own making me wonder if he would come out looking like a copy of his father.
"Yukino." He said my name dropping the cheerful tone.
"Hm?" I hummed feigning ignorance knowing full well he must be getting tired of me moving around how I like ignoring the rules. Practically showing favoritism to those who just looked at our interactions on the surface.
"What brings you to the village?"
"I'm a person of my word don't worry. I'm just passing through just to see how everyone is doing then I'll be off to seal myself away for the next 13 years. I won't stay long just a day or two nothing more I promise. Is… can I have that much please?"
Letting out a sigh he gave a nod much to my relief.
"Thank you." Slowly pulling away I took out my scroll and took out my camera. "I know this may be a selfish request but can I take a picture with her?"
Hesitating for a moment he looked down at Sarada before he began to unbuckle the carrier. Handing her to me he took the camera during the exchange. Hearing Sarada groan at the shift I took a seat in the shade and hummed a lullaby that I once heard while crossing through the ruins of Roran.
The light rising above the tower,
Thoughts boil and run high,
Dragon path to be protected,
Pierce with shining blade look at the sky
Hearing her soft giggles as she reached out to my face I adored her small toothless smile. As my view of her turned blurry I turned my head up to pull back the tears. Having a good memory was a curse sometimes. At the most random of things, I would suddenly be flooded with the most random things some of which would have been things someone would have forgotten long ago. But because of my damned memory regret, anger, hatred, and love resurfaced. Regret for the missed opportunity for Mikoto missing the girl she always wished for. Anger for the choices made in the past. Hatred for this village that forced a young 13-year-old's boy hand to do the unthinkable. And love for a new family member. Hearing her babbles as she reached up to catch the falling tears and gems and ice I brushed them away from her. "I'm fine Sarada. I'm just glad you inherited her heart." Remembering where I was I quickly wiped the tears. "Hey, Kakashi take the pictures already."
"Already did." Hearing the smile in his tone he handed me the pictures and as part of our silent deal I let go of my niece.
Feeling her weight and warmth leave my arms there was an emptiness I felt. Looking down at the pictures I was happy at the results, they were of me singing, smiling, and finally crying. It made me feel warm and that was enough.
"Kakashi-sensei!" Perking up at the familiar voice I kneeled down and quickly packed up, wiping my face I kept my head low. 'How embarrassing being caught crying like this. Seriously Naruto do you have a third sense or something?' Getting up I put on my veiled hat and turned around. "How are you doing Kakashi-sensei?" Sucking in air I practically held my breath as I saw Hinata and her child in her arms. Remaining quiet I tipped my hat as a show of respect.
Hearing Shizune calling for Kakashi in the distance. He let out a heavy sigh and apologized excusing himself to go see what issue popped up.
Seeing my opportunity to get away as well I turned back to Naruto and Hinata to give them one last good look before I froze as the memories of one of my shadow clones flooded my mind. This one was different than the others. They had lasted a few days out there. Processing the new information I seemed to zone out in their eyes.
"Huh?" Coming to I flinched as blue eyes looked through the crack in my veil. "Yukino-chan! You came back." He beamed.
Chuckling I shook my head. Somehow he recognized me yet couldn't remember. "Fufu you're the first to recognize me at first glance. How are you doing? I heard you got married and to lady Hinata at that, so lucky."
"Hehe beat you to it."
Smirking at his teasing he put a hand on my back and pushed me towards her. "Sorry about missing the wedding I've always been hard to track down," I said quickly coming up with a topic to avoid having to explain the whole fact that she no longer remembered me and we weren't friends anymore based on her new memories.
"It's alright that's how you've always been Yukino-chan," Hinata chuckled.
"Yeah… sorry–" Playing back her words in my mind I froze as I processed them. "Huh?"
"Boruto greet your auntie." With a gentle smile, she picked up her young son and handed him to me.
Extremely confused I looked down at the baby and let out a small laugh. "Haha, took after your dad huh? Whiskers and all." Reaching for my veil with his tiny hands I tossed my hat to the ground and rocked their baby. "He's so cute it's almost a shame I can't see you for long."
"Then why not stay the night at our place Yukino-chan?"
"I would love that!"
・・・
Before I knew it I somehow found myself standing in their entryway. Swept up from the joy I was in bliss unaware of my surroundings as I snapped back to reality finding myself in their entryway still holding their child.
Hearing the wood creak my eyes darted to the hall as Hinata came back. "I'm surprised Boruto has been calm this long he's been crying from the heat all day."
"Sorry about that," I heard Naruto yell from what I assumed was the kitchen. "The air conditioner broke and the repairman won't be here until tomorrow morning."
"Oh," looking down at the snoozing baby I couldn't help but chuckle as my naturally cooler body temperature came in handy. "I'll stay the night then I don't mind the temperature." Handing Hinata back her kid I sat down in the step and took off my shoes and hung up hat.
With the wood creaking under her shifting weight Hinata spoke softly. "Yukino-chan, I remembered. I remember my best friend."
Feeling like crying all over again I nodded silently and wiped my eyes with my palms. "I'm glad. You kept your promise."
"I had some help. I'll show you tonight."
Giving a nod I heard her retreat. Right now I couldn't look at her face I know I made her forget upon her request and I was happy to know she was able to break the seal on her memories but that broke my heart. By some method she remembered and yet the people I once called family forgot and just simply never showed signs of breaking free of their false past. Now throwing in the deal she made she felt her heart drop at the thought of Gaara remembering before the time was up. Her children were not hers to possess she would have to eventually let them go if they asked… even if it meant letting them go to the things she was afraid of. But that was for another time. She didn't want whatever god was listening in to toy with her more than it had.
"Hah…" Wiping my eyes. I joined the couple in the kitchen seeing the Uzumaki family chatting happily on the engawa.
"–Naruto, if we have a daughter I want her to look like you." Walking in on a conversation I listened in and carefully approached.
"But if she takes after you she will end up pretty cute."
"But you're more handsome."
Walking into the couple flirting with each other I chuckled. "I agree with Naruto I want a mini Hinata to spoil rotten." Chatting away on the balcony I eventually succumbed to the warmth of the sun and fell asleep and with it came the refreshing cold air the Uzumaki family craved as they scooted closer like they would to the air conditioner. My extra chakra seeping out in the form of ice I slept soundly for once not having to worry about getting my throat cut, or chest stabbed as I slept as my many shadow clones had in this short but awfully long journey.
3rd POV
Eyes snapping open Yukino took in her surroundings wincing as her hair got pulled. "Boruto," Naruto panicked trying to unclench his son's tight fist around a long strand of hair he found fun. Giggling at his reaction he tugged seeing his father panic even more making the small baby who didn't know any better than to laugh more.
"What do we have here? Seems I caught something in my web." She smiled groggily.
"I'm so sorry Yukino-chan." Naruto sighed.
"Here let me show you a trick." Reaching over the couch's side she took hold of their little wrist. "When they do this, gently bend their wrist down," doing it Boruto let go automatically, "see? Next time he tugs on Hinata's hair do this alright?"
"Thank you Yukino-chan." Sighing in relief he reached for a toy and handed it to the baby to entertain themselves. Looking around she could sense Hinata on the floor above. Guessing by her chakra flow she could tell she was resting.
"Go join Hinata. I'll babysit for you." She suggested. Surprised he considered it but as he was about to reject it she put her hand on his shoulder. "Naruto go rest you both need it." Sighing he gave in. A few minutes ago sleep took over and even though he dozed off for a minute it was enough for his son to already start causing mischief. Not to mention if his arms had relaxed for even a moment… he shivered at the thought as he handed over his son.
"Try not to cause too much trouble for Auntie Yukino-chan." Kissing the top of his head he looked at Yukino with teary eyes and pulled her into a hug being careful to not squish his son between them. "Thank you Yukino-chan. I'm glad you're back I mean it."
"The best way you can thank me is by taking care of yourself and your wife first. If you can do that you'll be able to take care of your son better." Giving a firm nod he let go and quickly and quietly went up the stairs.
Looking down at their three-month-old old Yukino gently rocked them singing a few lullabies. With so few medics in Uzushio the maternity ward was an area she wasn't much of an expert on but took to learning to be of help to the midwives who were training to be medic-nin. Teaching them they taught her some things in turn.
Holding up a crinkly toy to grab their attention she smiled gently as he reached up trying to grab it. "Haha, you can do it–" Feeling another clone disappear she did her best to push away from the new memories that flooded her mind but felt her body sway. Leaning into the couch's side for support she closed her eyes tightly seeing the shadow clone's memories and experiences flood her brain in seconds.
Feeling the wave pass she took in a deep breath and shook her head bringing herself back to the moment. Luckily when she froze up she really froze up and that included her hold on small Boruto. Looking down at him she smiled. "Sorry did I worry you?" Rocking him to sleep she single handedly took out her camera and took a picture of them both. A little something to add to her album.
As a couple of hours pass and the couple remained fast asleep. She could also tell the baby stirring in its sleep was becoming hungry.
Filling up a pitcher of water she infused her chakra into it before pulling it out and shaping it into a floating bassinet. Placing the baby in it she adjusted the shape so they would be comfortable and wouldn't roll out. Testing it out for a bit she let it rock gently behind her, before turning her attention to the small kitchen.
・・・
A few more hours in the Uzumaki couple bolted up from their sleep at the new scent. Thinking the worst and that the stove was left on they both bolted downstairs.
"Woah there you two ok?" With wide eyes Yukino e held up a pan with the cooked fish. "Didn't expect my food to summon you two like this. Take a seat." Letting out a small laugh she smirked teasing the two. Serving the fish on the plates she placed it on the table dragging the two sleepy parents to enjoy their food. Bringing over the side she placed down the rice, miso with tofu, and some springrolls before them to choose. "Boruto and I already ate you two were the only ones left."
Bringing over the cradle she checked in on their son and chuckled at how soundly they slept. Having bottle fed him earlier, burped him and even changed his diaper he slept full and soundly. Going back to the kitchen she cleaned up the dishes she had used.
"Thank you Yukino-chan." The couple echoed, relief finally settling in that there was nothing to be worried about. Eating calmly their eyes every so often turned to their son ready to attend to their needs worried at every little sound would lead to some crying.
Meanwhile Yukino cleaned up she let out a proud huff as she was done with her clean up of the entire first floor. It took a while with no shadow clones and tending to the baby before it could cry but she managed thanks to her cradle doing the rocking for her. Something the couple unfortunately won't be able to use once she left. 'At least its one kid and not three.' Realizing that she let out a heavy sigh at what awaited her. She studied enough to know it probably won't go that smoothly. But for all this trouble she knew one thing for sure the foxes of Inari will definitely feel a bit guilty and try to help her out even though it was their job to take part of the trial. Chuckling to herself she sucked in her breath and tightly held the rag in her hand. A clone she had made a few days ago to them off was now returning an with it all of its experience from those days. Thanks to it she noticed that her persuers had decided to split and with their lowered numbers she noted that they had begun to stalk her waiting for an opening. 'Huh I guess they must be looking to cut down on the clones to find me.'
With her in the village it would be dumb to send out clones risking her getting caught by those on patrol or worse making it easier for the foxes chasing her down to corner her in the village. It was only a matter of time before they took them all out and shared their intel at the next fox shrine. As much as she wanted to spend a little more time to catch up she had to pack up and leave first thing tomorrow morning.
Noticing the furrow in her brow Hinata turned to her husband and nudged her head in her direction. Understanding he took her empty plate to do the dishes. "Yukino-chan," Hinata spoke breaking her from her thoughts. "We have extra towels in the bathroom you can use. Let me prepare you a bath so you can relax."
"Oh no there's no need I'll do it." Pushing the cradle to Hinata, Yukino quickly ran to the bathroom before poking her head out. "Rest," she ordered before going in. Chuckling at her care she looked to her son and lifted him out hearing his groans for more food. "Did you fun with auntie Yukino?"
Having spent her days in the woods the privacy of the wall around her were a nice change of pace. Relaxing there longer than intended she quickly got out and pulled out the water from her long hair before wrapping it in a towel.
Leaving satisfied she reached for her clothes only to find a neat stack of a pair of pjs waiting for her. Putting on her friends clothes she walked out finding Hinata burping her son with Naruto no where to be seen or sensed in the house. "Where'd he go?" She asked curious.
"Naruto went to the grocery store."
"But your fridge is full?" She pointed out before realizing she sent him out as an excuse. "Well then, now that we're alone I guess I can ask how you remember."
Giving a nod she spoke softly. "I know you'll leave soon. You never stayed for long and I… I don't want to spend all the time we have explaining that day so I'm giving you permission to look in my head."
Feeling a bit guilty about that she knew it was the truth for being a friend she was pretty absent most of her life. "Alrigth uhm… can you remember what day it was?"
"The day the moon fell and the day when the earth was saved." Face flushing slightly she turned her face away. "It was also the day when Naruto and I kissed.
"Hmmm." Teasing her I couldn't wait to see to see that. Placing my hands on her head I closed my eyes as I entered. Scanning her memories I found the day she spoke of and the ones before, opening her eyes Yukino held a memory marble the size of a billiard ball. "My that was quiet the eventful week." Spinning the marble, she quickly skimmed through the events of those days and reached the end seeing Hinata going through some sort of genjustu memory tunnel. Catching glimpses of their shared memories between her and Naruto as well as memories of those who tried to push them together I could see her sealed memories peeking through the false ones. 'Of course that makes sense such a contradiction would begin the unraveling process.'
Knowing this Yukino held it close and smiled. Creating a copy she turned to her friend and brushed her bangs away getting the memories of her wedding day as well. Placing the slightly large marble on the table she smiled. "I know its late but please accept it as my wedding gift for you two. You know it will never melt and if you place it on a mirror it will be like watching a movie. Of course this is based solely on your memories so it will be one sided but next time I see you I'll add naruto's and fix the arrangement–"
"Thank you," Hugging her tightly as she could while holding a baby Yukino returned the hug.
"Don't mention it." Enjoying the hug she reluctantly pulled away as the heat of the place was more noticeable now. Cooling the air a bit she still felt hot. Wiping her hands on her pjs she cleared her throat. "Also… I'll be expecting so… so if its not too much to ask do you think you would like to come visit my home again sometime in the future?"
"I would love to!" Wearing a soft smile as sweet as cotton candy she couldn't help but smile as well. She didn't ask for more knowing her childhood friend enough to know anything she didn't say was something that would come out another day. But to think she was going to be a mother too. Now that she didn't expect from the lone wolf.
For the remaining night Yukino gave her friend one last gift before she left. A good's night sleep.
Yukino's POV
"Are you sure that's all you'll need?" Hinata asked looking into the bag filled with fruits and dried food.
"Don't worry." Tightening her arm protectors she talked to her friend from the entrance. "I'll only be traveling for a few days this is more than enough." Adjusting her pouches she graciously took the bag. "I'll be fine don't worry. I'll send a letter once I reach my home."
"Alright, are you sure you don't want to tell Naruto goodbye?"
"Nah it's ok he's a surprisingly heavy sleeper so I don't want to bother you with that." Chuckling she pinched Boruto's cheeks. "And I'll make sure to send you gifts." Looking around for any Anbu I leaned in close and whispered. "Can you also pass my gifts to Sarada for me?"
"I will but Yukino please be safe."
"Haha don't worry about me I've survived worse."
・・・
Two days into the wild forests of Konoha on foot I chose to limit my chakra usage. With the finish line so close it would make sense for them to be near. Taking the merchant roads I could travel with ease knowing my tracks would get buried under the many cart tracks and animal tracks from the many people who crossed these paths daily.
Feeling another onslaught as information flooded my brain I buckled and staggered to a tree to not lose my balance as the information came this time much harder. Based on the memories I could tell they stopped attacking and instead resorted to taunting me for the last two days before deciding to attack simultaneously. My plan although good to throw them off my path had a flaw and they took full advantage of it. Somehow they must've figured it out before me and decided to wear me down by trying to drain me mentally.
'This isn't normal… what happened?' For some reason, I could not just process the information normally and at a glance as had before and analyze it internally on my own. 'It wasn't like this before… before the seal…' Coming to that realization I groaned at the splitting headache I felt as my brain tried to process the two points of views in a matter of seconds. Having only one chance to take in any bit of information as it flew by me of course my mind rewired itself to be able to take in as much of that information in. I should've guessed there would be adverse effects once I returned and had no use for that anymore. With me up and moving my mind was processing whatever I experienced but the additional information from the clones… I hadn't noticed before because since I'd woken up I hadn't had a shadow clone out for more than 24 hours but the information overload was staggering, especially with so much going on before they chose to eliminate the clone.
"Are you alright miss?"
Looking up at the traveling merchants I was about to reject their help when I thought of something. "Where are you guys heading?"
Hitching a ride with the kind group to the land of hot springs. I promised not to eat any of their things and to get off halfway, which would have been perfect for me to get off and be on my merry way to the boat that waited for me. Volunteering my protection as a shinobi at first they were wary until I mentioned I was also a medic nin. Luckily for me and them, someone in the group was sick putting my services to use immediately.
After a day of travel, they ran into friends of theirs who were heading south of the land of hot springs to one of the land's most popular beach resorts, a location not too far from a cove where my boat would be waiting. Having helped them out they hooked me up and I hitched a ride with the new group.
After two days of travel per the agreement, I got off at the halfway point all while feeling nauseous as my final shadow clones were eliminated. With the finish line so close I took the off-beaten path when an idea struck me. Going over my memories of the animals I've seen passing through the area I remembered the sika deer. Waiting until the headache passed I ate the last few bits of my rations before I was ready. Gathering a few safe leaves I crushed and rubbed the juices over my skin as well as some dirt. Sniffing myself I hoped it would be enough to mask my scent knowing well based on a certain knucklehead's fight with the Inuzuka boy a weakness to this technique barely anyone thinks about.
Concentrating on the small deer I've sometimes seen in this land and in deer town in the land of hot springs I relied on my memories before transforming my body to appear like the small creature's. 'Small… right no hunter will go after me if I'm considered a bit small.' With all the information I needed I transformed.
Poof
Opening my eyes I looked back and at my successfully transformed body. Stomping a bit to get a feel for this height and new way of walking I soon got comfortable with it and soon navigated the forest with ease with this new small body. As I paced memories of my youth flooded my mind, feeling the wind on my face I picked up the pace the more I reminisced. Feeling free at last I jumped over a creek with ease. 'Life would be so much easier like this.' I thought to myself feeling whatever burden I had seeped away among the trees.
Stopping to catch my breath I looked around for any dangers before relaxing. 'Stop daydreaming you can do that once you return home.' Looking up at the sky I couldn't really pinpoint how far I'd gone. Not knowing exactly I slowed my pace and kept walking straight.
・・・
Doing everything to survive until night came my ears perked up at every noise noticing the wolves watching me with hunger but knowing better they trusted their instincts that something was just not right with this deer so they opted to watch. Unsure of what methods they'd been using to track me down I acted normal in case word spread among the creatures of a weird deer spotted in these parts of the woods. Walking away I looked at the sky and smiled. After I sleep all I would need was to walk calmly in the direction I've been going all night and morning and I was sure to reach the shoreline by noon.
Walking until I found another creek this one much deeper I hunked down near it and made my bedding at the base of a tree. Curling up I closed my eyes. Not long after I woke up I noticed the ice covering parts of the creek. Carefully making my way across trying not to get wet and unmask my scent, I turned around stomped on the ice eliminating my signature trace.
Come morning I reached a thick river it looked calm but I knew how deceiving it could be. Picking up a small branch I threw it in and watched as it was quickly sucked in and swept away. Knowing this small body would not be able to cross safely I undid the transformation and made small platforms to cross. Once I was on the other side I knew it was a matter of time. Having not found a single shadow clone the last few days they were most likely suspecting I was nearing my destination. Although they weren't given an exact one like I was they were given a general idea of where my finish line would be. Already 12 days in the excitement of the finish line being so close made me jumpy. With my disguise gone, I took to the trees hopping from branch to branch with ease knowing that at my pace I would get to the location in two hours.
3rd POV
They were always so crafty. Having waited their whole lives to take part in the trial the young foxes were over excited to take part of the hunt. Going over her file they studied every bit of information available to them. Likes, dislikes, friends, skills, and abilities. They learned who she was and made predictions on what her movements would be based on that.
Tailing her the moment they heard the whistle they still managed to tail her among the shifting sands by following the light signs of moisture in the sand. Her technique although worked in hiding her steps had a chance of leaving a few droplets or shards of ice that would soon melt. Drawing close they lost her trail completely the moment the sandstorm started. Knowing she would eventually have to leave the land of wind we went ahead and moved onto the land of rivers looking for any trace of her to follow. And that we did but instead of finding a simple concrete sign we found multiple. Slipping through our fingers we eliminated each of her clones as we came across them hoping to tire her out but she surprsaed our prediction on just how much chakra she had. We though it would be pointless until we split up and one team noticed the zoned out look from the clone. Practically standing behind her without reaction a new plan came to mind and waited until the other team found another before testing our theory.
Now after eliminating every clone we could we found ourselves following her scent on the merchant paths in the land of fire. "Let's head to the goal." Abandoning all routes we headed to the end of the finish line. There were a couple of locations where we guessed her boat to be but only one direct area where we could suspect her to pass through based on her tracks.
Little did they know she guessed right that they would lay in wait for her. Knowing one of the exits from Mt. Inari was in a hidden clearing with hot spring water flowling through it she set up a stun barrier before laying in wait in the trees. Thanks to the mineral scent and steam of the springs they were perfect enough cover. Unmoving and patient she waited for an hour knowing, feeling certain that they would appear. How? Well with her shadow clones disappearing she kept track of exactly where they all where and seeing how they had practically been hopping around from place to place it wasn't hard to guess they they had been too reliant on the exits of Mt. Inari.
"–at the pace she's going she'll be passing by any day now." Watching closely she counted the foxes as they began to appear through the steam. Looking them over carefully she made sure they weren't clones. "We should find that boat before she does–" seeing them all in place she simultaneously manipulated the water at their feet and froze them in place as she activated the stun barrier. With them in place and touching it she jumped down and looked at each of the foxes.
"I'll admit this was easier than I expected." The foxes surprised at her appearance tried to speak but were unable to as she freely walked around them taking their weapons before she slapped a tag on their back. Picking them all up and moved them put them in a circle facing each other making sure to freeze their wrists behind them before raising the water and encasing them in a dome of thick ice. Outside of said dome she ran away undoing the stun barrier.
"Hey!" Yelling from inside the dome they all realized their hands were free and began doing hand seals for their ninjutsu. To their surprise, nothing came of it. Quickly inspeacting each others backs they found a charka seal. The same they heard had been used on her for training at a young age. Irked at being caught in such a simple trap they threw themselves onto the ground letting the warm water tricking thorough the area to slowly melt away the ice.
Meanwhile Yukino began to full on sprint to her destination. Heart racing in excitement she let out a laugh at the rush she felt in seing their shocked expressions. She never saw them before growing up but they should have known better than to not underestimate her. They had all of Mt. Inari and yet not one of them chose to ask those she intaraced with most about how she was or how she fought. She was slippery and liked being crafty. Even thought most shinobi liked entering combat first and being crafty during it she learned that approach just dragging things on and led to unnecessary injuries. Had a proper trap been placed ahead of time such injuries could be avoided. Hearing the waves crashing against each other she picked up her pace releasing her chakra. In a flash her body shot forward as she jumped out through the trees to the beach ahead. Manipulating her water she reated a platform to land on and made a few smaller ones heading up. Swinging from platform to platform she reached the top and peered down at the trees and water below her. With a quick scan of the area she found the cove her boat would be in. With that she jumped down and glided to its location.
Learning from her last experience she was prepared this time. Entering the cove she gasped at the double canoe that waited. Swept up in the beautiful design she quickly snapped out of it remembering the task in hand. Creating a few shadow clones they began to inspect the boat and get it ready to set sail. Once everything was properly checked and in place she got on and got pushed out into sea. With no wind on her sails she scooped out some water from the ocean and simply made some fan blades. Spinning it like crazy she held on as the boat began to push against the waves into the ocean. Looking ahead she readied her hand, pushing away the waves allowing her boat to break through. Remembering how her last trip went she calmed her beating heart. Albeit a bit nervous about coming across another whirlpool she knew she was stronger. No matter what got in her way she'll find a way out of it. 'Things will work out.' She prayed.
A/N: Sorry for the slight delay began my job again and I got caught up with work.
