Lena was in the ambulance as paramedics tried to maintain Jesus' breathing and heart rate. As they were driving to the hospital he was struggling to stay awake. However Lena kept trying to keep him awake. She kept telling him everything was going to be ok and that he needed to stay awake.
Lena couldn't understand why something terrible happened to him. Tears left her eyes as she tried to keep him awake. She was heartbroken.
Jesus was trying to focus on Lena's words however he was struggling against exhaustion. He was only able to hold off a few minutes longer, then darkness filled his vision.
Katie was taken to the hospital and Jessica was getting her ankle looked at. Jessica saw Mariana looking around then seeing her. Mariana walked over.
Meanwhile Stef was also coming out from the rubble with Zachery and a few survivors. She saw Mariana walking over to Jessica and decided to check on them. "Are you ok?" Mariana asked. "I'm sorry…I shouldn't have made her promise." Jessica apologized she really was regretting leaving Callie down there alone, especially since she's the one who got them to safety.
"Are you talking about Callie?" Mariana asked. "She went back for Ronny…" "So Ronny's ok?" They both turned around to see Ronny's parents and Stef walking up to them.
"Callie's ok?" Stef asked. Jessica looked at all the parents with a sad guilty expression. "Ronny didn't make it…" Jessica finally broke the news. Ronny's father looked confused.
"Then why did she go back for him?" He asked while consoling his crying wife. "Yeah, and was she ok?" Stef asked again, wanting answers.
Jessica was overwhelmed, she didn't know how to tell Ronny's parents. She also wasn't sure if Callie would make it back.
Jessica ignored all the questions and walked toward the entrance of the collapsed mall.
Stef started talking with Mariana to see if Jessica had told her anything. While Ronny's parents decided to follow Jessica.
Jessica looked through the hole she had been carried out of and finally saw her. Callie was slowly and carefully making her way to Jessica. Lilith was still holding one of Callie's hands while still having her eyes closed. Then Jessica saw what she had in her other hand. It was covered with Callie's jacket but she knew what was underneath it.
Once they were out Jessica introduced Callie to Ronny's parents.
"I'm sorry…I didn't want his casket to be empty…and I couldn't leave him down there…" Callie said as the mother cried harder realizing what it was Callie was holding.
"Thank you." The father said as he grabbed Ronny in his arms with the jacket still covering him.
"LILY." Zachery called out when he saw his little girl. "That's daddy, can I open my eyes now." Lilith asked. "Yeah, you win the game. Congratulations." Callie said before Lilith took off towards her dad.
Stef, Mariana, Brandon and Jude's attention was caught when Zachery yelled. They saw the little girl run to her father and they saw Callie there standing. They were all relieved and began running towards her.
Jessica looked at Callie and noticed something. "Callie? When did you take out the rod?" Jessica asked concerned. Callie looked down, she didn't remember taking it out, but she also didn't remember it falling out. She really couldn't remember much of the trip up here. "I don't know." She answered right before she blacked out.
Stef was trying to figure out what Jessica said to Mariana about Callie. Mariana told her what she said and they were both confused and more worried. They had concluded that Jessica, Katie and Callie had crossed paths but before they could figure out anything else someone caught Mariana's attention. Stef followed her gaze and noticed Zachery and his daughter reuniting and Callie next to them.
Callie's ok, Stef thought as her and Mariana began to make their way toward Callie. They noticed Jessica looking at her with a horrified expression. She said something and Callie looked down and responded. Then Callie passed out.
"CALLIE!" Stef yelled as she ran to her.
Mike, Brandon and Jude stopped what they were doing and caught Stef running toward Callie. Jude instantly took off toward his sister. "CALLIE!" He also screamed. Mike and Brandon rushed to them after a few seconds as well.
Stef was the first to arrive at Callie, the first thing Stef noticed was all the blood she was covered in. She knelt down to start examining her for injuries. "She had a metal rod in her side." Jessica told her. Stef looked at her signaling for her to explain. "After the building collapsed she had a small metal rod stuck into her left side. Her back was also bleeding and she carried Katie all the way. I think the rod might have fallen out whenever she went back in." Jessica explained.
Jude was already near Callie but the paramedics began working on Callie. She was still breathing barely but she was. The paramedics rushed her into the ambulance and Stef hopped in.
Mike ushered the rest of the kids into his car and gave them a ride to the nearest hospital.
Meanwhile in the ambulance with Stef and Callie. Callie was taking short shallow breaths while unconscious. The paramedics were doing the best they could however there wasn't much they could do. They needed to get her to the hospital fast.
All Stef could do was watch her daughter struggle. She watched as paramedics worked on Callie. She didn't understand why she went back for a second trip. She couldn't because she wasn't there for her. She was alone even after her and Lena had promised she would never be alone.
Callie's heart rate spiked up then went down. This happened two more times before she started having a heart attack. Then silence…
Jesus was standing in the middle of the mall. It wasn't like the last time he saw it, it was intact. As if the collapse didn't happen, it was even as busy as usual. Jesus was so confused, he decided to ask where he was.
"Excuse me." He tried the person that was passing next to him. The man ignored him and Jesus decided to try another person. 'That guy was rude.' He thought to himself. "Hey…" The woman didn't acknowledge him either.
He looked around and began to notice there were fewer people than before. As he scanned the crowd he spotted Callie looking around as she walked toward him.
"This makes sense." She said as she stopped in front of him. "What?" He asked, confused. "This is the last place you remember so it's the place your mind went to." Callie explained. "That still doesn't make any sense. Where's moms and our siblings?" He asked.
Callie took a deep breath. "They're not here. No one is." Jesus looked around and all the people who were there before weren't. It was only Callie and him.
"It's only us because…well…we're both dead." She told him. His heart dropped, he now was able to remember Lena and him in the ambulance. However he doesn't remember ever seeing Callie.
"What? We didn't make it?" He asked, worried and confused.
"We survived the mall collapsing but…we're both in different ambulances right now. Mama's with you and mom's with me. I only know that because Mom was trying to get me to wake up. Oh and don't worry we somehow happen to be dead at the same. To the rest of the world it seems like we've been dead for a few seconds. Now we have to decide who wants to live more because one of us has to wake up." She explained.
"Why just one of us?" He asked, confused.
"We can both wake up and we can both die but at least one of us should stay because they won't be able to handle both of us dying." She said.
"How can you be ok with all of this? Doesn't this bother you, at all?"
"Of course it bothers me but I know that they are safe. I don't need to protect Jude anymore because he has a family now. Anyways, I should get going. Good luck, you'll need it." She said before she walked away and disappeared. "Callie?" Jesus called out but now he wasn't in the mall anymore.
He did recognize the place he was at. He saw his younger self and Mariana's younger self. He was reliving the traumatic life before they met their family.
Meanwhile Callie left him to relive his hell while she also re-lived hers. From her mother's death to all the foster homes they had been in.
