It's boring, Mike thinks. And stressful and tense, and... and... No one can do anything. So much is closed, or unsafe, and they have these tapings to consider, and Mania is days away now, and nothing feels right. He lays in bed and stares out of the window and just thinks. About how differently his life would've been if he'd gone into business like his father had wanted. He wouldn't have the houses, he wouldn't have the fame, or his friends, or the TV shows he's been on, and the things he's experienced. He wouldn't have AJ or the kids. His breathing gets a little rough then but he shakes it off, sitting up and stretching his arms out over his head. "It's ok," he murmurs to himself. "I'm ok."
Forcing himself out of bed and into some clothes, he pads through Zack's house until he finds John sitting by poolside, eyes closed and a peaceful look on his face. "Morning, Mike," he says, without even looking up.
"How'd you know it was me?" he wonders, settling in in a lawn chair close to him.
John chuckles. "I've known you for the better part of two decades, I well know how you walk by now."
Mike hums. "God, we sound so old."
John laughs for real at this, eyes twinkling as he looks over to wink at Mike. "We are old, man. But that's old. I age like a fine wine."
"Hmph." It's true. He still has the ridiculous abs, the long, wavy hair, the calm, deep brown eyes. "So do I," Mike chooses to say and John grins at him.
"Hell yeah, brother." He reaches over and drops a coconut water next to Mike before settling back in with a sigh. "At least the weather's nice."
"Yeah," Mike agrees, leaning back and staring up at wispy white clouds slowly creeping over the sky, lost in thought about all that's coming up. "Do you think we have a chance?" he finds himself asking, gasping and clapping a hand over his mouth as John glances over at him in confusion. "At Mania," he finally mutters.
"Of course we do," John says, words as easy as spreading butter over warm toast. "Why wouldn't we? We outlasted five other teams in Elimination Chamber, Mike. No matter what they throw at us for Mania, we've got this. As your friend Asuka would say, EZPZ."
Mike laughs at that and leans back with a sigh, feeling a little better about things. Not great, there's still too much to worry about and considering, but... yeah. Better.
Between the two of them, they decide to spend Smackdown on commentary. The Usos and New Day are competing to determine who should face them at Mania for the tag belts, and although Mike nor John want to seem like they have an agenda for being out there, they absolutely do have an agenda for being out there. And they take it the first opportunity they get, causing the match to get thrown out and no number one contender determined.
Mike and John laugh and half-hug each other in smug victory, when... when Cole interrupts and informs them that the higherups in the back, carefully sequestered away from everyone else in their fancy little offices, trying to avoid COVID-19, had decided that at Mania, the two of them would compete against Usos and New Day in a ladder match.
Mike's jaw drops, and he and John exchange worried glances. No good deed goes unpunished.
