Chapter 76: Staging a Heroes' Welcome!
A week has passed and the day of the Wallace Cup has arrived which everyone was getting excited about.
"Live from Lake Valor, it's Sinnoh Now!"Rhonda reported. "Just twenty four hours before the Wallace Cup gets underway, the excitement is building by the second, like a perfect day on the beach!"
The screen showed the location of where the Wallace Cup was taking place.
"Fans and Coordinators are beginning to like, gather in this lakeside resort!"Rhonda remarked."For the next three days, this peaceful community will transform into a hotful activity! So if you plan on coming do it now!"
Meanwhile...
May, Denise, Munchlax, Kirlia and Piplup were eating giant cookies while Dawn looked quite worried while holding her cookie.
Brock held the female cookie vendor's hands and started flirting with her.
"Lovely lady, if only I could be wrapped up in your perfect grace, I feel so free!"Brock flirted.
Croagunk then poison jabbed Brock causing him to drop on the floor before dragging him away.
"What do you know?"May chuckled while sweat dropping."Croagunk is doing Max's job."
"Yeah."Denise agreed and looked down. "Um, May there is something I've been wanting to ask you."
"Sure, go ahead."May remarked happily as she bit on her cookie.
"Is Ash your boyfriend?"Denise asked.
May spat out the cookie crumps in her mouth and coughed a bit.
"What?!"May said in shock and cleaned her mouth with a napkin. "Oh no! Ash and I are just friends nothing more, why do you ask?"
Denise's cheeks flushed a bit.
"Nothing just wondering."Denise replied shyly.
"You like Ash don't you?"May giggled.
"Well yes, maybe, I don't know."Denise answered as her face turned more red. "I think I do."
"You wanna know a secret?"May asked.
"Okay."Denise replied. "What is it?"
"I like Drew."May whispered with a smile.
"Whoa, seriously?"Denise asked in surprise. "But isn't Drew, one of your rivals?"
"Yes, but though most of the times he taunts me, he provides a helping hand whenever I need it."May admitted. "When credit is due, he occasionally gives me a rose."
"That's nice."Denise commented and took a bite on her cookie. "Roses usually symbolises love and feelings that are usually beyond friendship."
May blushed and smiled. "I guess your right about that."
Denise notice Dawn barely ate or took a bite on her giant cookie.
"Hey sis, are you alright?"She asked. "You hardly touched your cookie."
"My appetite is a little lost today."Dawn replied sheepishly.
Munchlax, Kirlia and Piplup looked at Dawn in curiosity.
Ash finished registering for the Wallace Cup.
"Yeah, I'm already registered."Ash chuckled.
"Pika!"Pikachu remarked.
"Hey Ash."Zoey greeted as she came forward. "Long time no see."
"Zoey."Ash responded.
"Pika pika!"Pikachu responded.
"Now don't tell me your entering the Wallace Cup too."Zoey stated.
"Yeah, Denise told me to enter it with Buizel after we met Wallace."Ash admitted.
"You met Wallace? Incredible."Zoey complemented.
"I wanna try out some new battle moves while entering the contest with Buizel."Ash explained.
"I see. I realised I need to figure out both contests and battles in order to get to the top."Zoey exclaimed with her eyes closed. "Guess I've kinda been in denial and here, you have been saying that all along. Sorry."
"No big deal."Ash assured.
"Pika pikachu."Pikachu spoke softly.
"Zoey!"
Ash, Pikachu and Zoey turned around, seeing Dawn, May, Denise and Brock coming up to them.
"You made it."Dawn said with a smile.
"Dawn and Denise, hi."Zoey greeted.
"Nice to see you."Brock admitted.
"Zoey, meet our friend, May."Denise introduced. "She is going to be in the Wallace Cup too."
"I heard a lot about."May remarked. "Hi, there."
"Back at you."Zoey chuckled and shook May's hand before looking at Dawn. "So Dawn I assume you registered right?"
"You bet."Dawn replied with a smirk.
"Way da go."Zoey admitted.
The Next Day...
The Wallace Cup has started.
"Welcome to the Wallace Cup!"Marian announced. "Hosted by the Master himself, Wallace and this year's special event is taking place at the picturous Valor Lakefront!"
The crowd cheered loudly at the announcement.
In the Changing Room...
Zoey, Denise and May were ready for the contest.
May wore an Arabian style dress. It was a pink top with a yellow heart on it with yellow border on the sleeves and neck. She also wore a peach-pink veil with a green gem on top and a light purple long skirt with a piece of pink fabric at the waist. Her entire midriff is exposed here. She also wore brown sandals and a yellow necklace with a red heart.
Denise wore a mint green dress that had black lining and a sweetheart neckline trim with ruffles and a black ribbon going down the left, tied into a bow. The rounded shoulders and included sleeves match, as does her two-layered skirt. The lower layer was emerald. She also wore black spandex tights and a pair of green low-heeled shoes. Her dark blue hair was in a curly style with a matching green bow at the back of her head.
A smile sprung on Denise's face when she saw her reflection.
"Perfect."Denise remarked and looked at Dawn."Dawn, it's almost time. Are you-"
Denise sweat dropped when she notice Dawn was frantically brushing her hair while Piplup stared at her.
"Give me the brush."May instructed.
May began to brush Dawn's hair.
"Thanks, May."Dawn remarked.
"Dawn, you were nervous like this at your debut."Zoey reminded.
A sad look grew on Dawn's face.
"Are you nervous?"May asked.
"I'm just wondering if I'll do a good job or not."Dawn replied sadly.
"Dawn, don't worry."Denise assured as she placed a comforting hand on her twin sister's shoulder. "You now learned that the Pokémon are the main stars in a contest, so you will do just great."
"Piplup pip!"Piplup agreed.
"Come on, Dawn."May encouraged. "No need to worry. Not with pretty hair."
A blush sprung on Dawn's face.
"Gee, thanks."Dawn thanked.
"Have fun with your Pokémon, okay?"May asked.
"Okay."Dawn answered.
Back at the Stage...
"And now for the introduction that you've all been waiting for!"Marian announced. "Sometimes he's a gym leader other times, he's the former champion master and still other times, he's a top coordinator and you all know his name!"
Water spurts out to the air and Milotic appeared.
The Milotic then splashes huge waves onto the stage immediately followed by Wallace appearing beautifully on stage.
"He's a true genius!"Marian announced. "The Contest Master, Wallace!"
"Hello Sinnoh and good morning!"Wallace greeted.
The crowd cheered loudly for the top coordinator.
"I'm happy to welcome you to the Wallace Cup at beautiful Lake Valor!"Wallace remarked. "Everyone stand back!"
The audience cheered as more water spurted out around the stage.
In the Waiting Room...
Ash and his friends were awe struck from the Wallace's extravagant entrance while Jessilina's eyes sparkled in admiration.
"There he is!"Ash chuckled.
"Pika!"Pikachu cheered.
"Milotic looks beautiful."May admitted.
"They are even more amazing when they are on stage."Dawn complemented.
Denise nodded in agreement.
Back on the Stage...
"So who will show us the most appeal in all of Sinnoh?"Wallace asked. "I'm here to find out!"
The crowd cheered loudly in excitement.
"Thank you, Wallace and Wallace has graciously agreed to assist our evaluations of our mini-performances by taking role of special judge of the day!"Marian remarked. "Now I'd like to introduce to you our other wonderful judges! First for all you know, Mr Contesta!"
"I bid you good morning and I'm looking forward to a spirited performance to everyone!"Mr Contesta greeted.
"Next up is the President of the Pokemon Fan Club, Mr Sukizo!"Marian stated.
"Lake Valor is remarkable!"Mr Sukizo admitted.
"And finally, the Lake Valor's very own Pokémon Center nurse, Nurse Joy!"Marian continued.
"My heart here is just beating a little faster being here with Wallace, thank you!"Nurse Joy commented while blushing.
"And I'm your announcer, Marian."Marian informed. "It's a pleasure to be here with you today!"
The crowd cheered happily at Marian.
"So let's show you what the winner of the Wallace Cup will receive! Presenting the fabulous Aqua Ribbon!"Marian remarked and held up the Aqua Ribbon."Of course, this incredible prestigious Ribbon counts as a win in Sinnoh, but it also counts in Kanto, Hoenn and Johto too! So to put it in another way, this victory is just one giant sized step to the winding path to the Grand Festival!"
Nurse Joy began to blush when Wallace sits down next to her.
"As you all know in order to compete in the Grand Festival, the coordinator needs to earn five contest ribbons from a region, so you're going to see passion!"Marian announced."Alright then! Let's do it! Let's see what our coordinators and their pokemon have got as we head onto the performance stage with our first entrance!"
The curtains went up and May appeared.
"And here she is!"Marian remarked.
"Wartortle now, on stage!"May ordered as she threw out her pokeball.
Her pokeball opened causing pink bubbles to come out and Wartotle appeared.
In the Waiting Room...
"Wartortle!"Ash complemented. "Cool!"
"Pika Pika!"Pikachu said happily.
"To think that used to be May's little Squirtle."Brock admitted.
"Wartortle, awesome."Dawn remarked.
"Let's see."Denise said.
Denise took out her Pokédex.
"Wartortle, the Turtle Pokémon and the evolved form of Squirtle."Denise's Pokédex said."Its furry tail is very popular as a symbol of long life."
On the Stage...
"You can really see it, sharing the love between those two and those adorable appealing has captured our audience!"Marian stated."Of course, water pokemon are all welcoming challengers at the Wallace Cup! So let's all watch it and enjoy!"
"Wartortle, Rapid Spin, go!"May ordered.
Wartortle uses Rapid Spin on the water while bouncing along the surface of the water, splashing water towards the audience causing them to cheer.
"What a creative way to use Rapid Spin!"Marian commented. "Wartortle is literally skipping across the water field and those fans in the bottom rows are all being treated to a refreshing and beautiful spray of water!"
"Aqua Tail!"May ordered.
Wartortle used Aqua Tail, sending a spinning vortex into the air.
"This is amazing!"Marian remarked. "After leaving high in the air, Wartortle's Aqua Tail is spreading out the whole stadium!"
In the Waiting Room...
"May and Wartortle look fantastic out there."Ash stated.
"Pikachu!"Pikachu agreed.
"They've got that timing of the Aqua Tail down pat."Brock remarked.
"And May's doing a fabulous of showing off her Wartortle's beautiful tail."Zoey added.
Dawn squeezed harder on Piplup, clutching it uncomfortably against her chest, showing signs of nervousness making Denise place a comforting hand on her twin's sister shoulder.
On the Stage...
"Finish it up!"May ordered.
Wartortle lands on its tail, does a back flip and fluidly lands on his feet.
The crowd cheered loudly at the performance.
"And an elegant splash of water for a striking finish!"Marian announced."That's May and Wartortle!"
"Excellent work!"Mr Contesta admitted. "Great technique and artistry and I loved how Wartortle kept smiling the entire way through!"
"Yes, remarkable!"Mr Sukizo agreed.
"Along with that lovely tail and shell, it was obvious how well trained May's Wartortle is truly is."Nurse Joy stated.
"Ah, the technique of using water and an active way to bring out the best in Wartortle, is the feast for the eyes!"Wallace remarked as he stood up.
"Wow!"Marian praised."Coming from a Champion like Wallace that's a highly known praise!"
In the Waiting Room...
"May's gone off to a great start hasn't she?"Brock asked.
"Yeah."Ash agreed.
Pikachu smiled. "Pika Pika!"
"Seems that she trained Wartortle really well."Denise said softly.
On the Stage...
"So now that the Wallace Cup is whipped up to a frenzy, let's keep it going!"Marian stated proudly.
A brief montage of nameless players ensued showing of their own contest prowess.
After it was Jessilina's turn.
Jessilina released her Wobbuffet who does a less than graceful landing, but somehow the audience still cheered.
Wobbuffet used Counter, which accidentally hits Jessilina, sending her flying high up into the air.
The crowd stared in amazement while James, Meowth and Mime Jr looked on with a stunned expression.
Jessilina then comes crashing down onto Wobbuffet much to the disapproval of the audience.
"You liked me!"Jessilina laughed. "You really liked me!"
Neither of the judges were impressed.
"Okay…moving right along."Marian said while sweat dropping."Here's our next entry, let's go!"
It was now Zoey's turn to perform.
In the Waiting Room...
"Yay, I finally get to see Zoey."May said with a smile.
On the Stage...
"Finneon, ready, go!"Zoey declared.
Her Capsule Ball opened causing small fire balls to come out and Finneon appeared before jumping into the water.
In the Waiting Room...
"Wow."Ash said as he took out his Pokédex. "Zoey's new Pokémon."
"Finneon the Wingfish Pokémon."Ash's Pokédex buzzed. "Because of its twin-tail fins that flutter like wings when swimming, Finneon has been called "The Beautifly of the Sea."
"Beautifly of the sea?"Dawn repeated. "Then it is true."
Brock, May and Denise looked at Dawn, who now looked more worry.
Back at the Stage...
"Use Silver Wind!"Zoey ordered.
Finneon used Silver Wind sending a shimmering gust across the water.
"You can all understand why it's called the Beautifly of the Sea with this lovely Silver Wind!"Marian admitted.
"Now use Safeguard!"Zoey ordered.
Finneon used Safeguard creating a spectacular shine reflected in the water surface.
"Gorgeous! Spectacular!"Marian commented. "The sparkle and the shine from its body combined with the glow of Safeguard really shows off Finneon's beauty and elegance!"
"Waterfall!"Zoey ordered.
Finneon used Waterfall which creates a large torrent to rise out of the water's surface.
The Wingfish Pokemon then travels up the water in a spiral fashion, leaped up above and shines dazzlingly.
"Now there's an action and it's waterfall for a beautiful finish!"Marian remarked.
The crowd cheered at Zoey.
"Zoey and Finneon!"Marian said. "What a tremendous performance!"
"I really love as their amazing way of artistic efforts built on itself."Mr Contesta stated.
"Me too."Mr Sukizo added. "Just remarkable."
"Her Finneon is as well trained as I've ever seen."Nurse Joy admitted.
"Indeed, a truly lovely sight."Wallace agreed as he stood up. "Today we have been given a real gift."
In the Waiting Room...
"What a way to show Finneon off."Brock said.
"His right."May stated. "It was stunning."
"Incredible."Dawn mumbled.
Dawn then notice Piplup was suffering in pain because of her vice-like hug causing her to stop.
"Sorry Piplup."Dawn apologised.
"Dawn, are you okay?"Ash asked.
"Pikachu."Pikachu said.
"Me? I'm fine!"Dawn assured with a nervous smile. "No need to worry, Ash!"
Back on the Stage...
"Now presenting our next performer!"Marian announced.
The curtains went up, revealing Denise causing the crowd to cheer at her.
"Alright Vaporeon, stage on!"Denise remarked.
Her Capsule Ball opened causing blue stars to come out and Vaporeon appeared.
"Vaporeon!"
The Bubble Jet Pokémon landed into the water.
"Vaporeon use Shadow Ball!"Denise ordered.
Vaporeon used Shadow Ball on the blue stars causing them to turn purple and float above her.
"Amazing!"Marian praised with a smile."Vaporeon used a ghost type move on stars to create a mysterious atmosphere!"
"Now Vaporeon, Water Gun!"Denise ordered.
Vaporeon fired Water Gun causing the ghost stars to connect with it causing blue purple sparkles to shimmer around slowly.
In the Waiting Room...
"Check out that move!"Ash commented.
"Pikachu!"Pikachu cheered.
"Denise chose wisely evolving her Eevee into a Vaporeon."Zoey stated.
Dawn looked at her twin sister's performance quietly.
Back on the Stage...
"Let's finish it up!"Denise admitted."Aurora Beam!"
Vaporeon leapt up from the water and fired a rainbow-coloured beam causing the ghost blue stars to melt away making a beautiful misty background and the sparkles to connect with her fur.
The Bubble Jet pokemon landed on the ground, shining like a star.
The crowd cheered loudly at Denise and Vaporeon while the judges looked impressed.
"There you have it, folks!"Marian announced."A fantastic water combination from Denise and Vaporeon!"
"I must say this performance was truly unexpected achievement."Mr Contesta commented.
"Besides remarkable!"Mr Sukizo said.
"Seeing Vaporeon's creativity of her performance was just wonderful."Nurse Joy admitted.
"I have to say, I truly loved the way Vaporeon used her moves to show off her hidden power and beauty."Wallace stated while standing up."Exactly what I really love to see in a water Pokémon's performance."
Denise and Vaporeon let out happy gasps at the judges' respond.
Vaporeon then bowed her head while Denise did a curtsy at the cheering crowd.
In the Hallway...
Denise headed back to the waiting room as Ash rushed forward.
"Hey Denise!"Ash greeted. "Awesome performance!"
"Thanks, good luck with yours."Denise said kindly.
The two trainers high fived at each other.
On the Stage...
"Now time for our next entry, go!"Marian announced.
"That's me!"Ash said proudly and took out his pokeball. "Buizel, I choose you!"
Lightning bolts came out of the pokeball and Buizel punched them away before landing on the ground.
"Aqua Jet!"Ash ordered.
Buizel uses Aqua Jet on the water to show off its speed and power.
"Buizel's using Aqua Jet to really show off his speed and power!"Marian stated.
In the Waiting Room...
"Wow, Ash looks great as well."May commented.
"I knew he would be."Denise admitted lovingly.
Dawn stared at Ash in amazement.
On the Stage...
Buizel was swimming underwater, waiting for his trainer's signal.
"Put on the brakes!"Ash ordered.
Buizel brakes by using the air sac around its neck, resulting in a complete stop.
"And Buizel shows off his trademark inflatable collar by a perfect stop in the water!"Marian said.
"Sonic Boom!"Ash ordered.
Buizel used Sonic Boom while underwater to propel itself out into the air.
"First the style and its grace of its Sonic Boom and now the power of a Sonic Boom!"Marian remarked. "That's incredible!"
"Use Water Gun!"Ash ordered.
Buizel used Water Gun in the air and splashed the water towards the judges, the water dispersed into a glittering mist.
"How's that for a dramatic Water Gun finish, folks?"Marian asked."Absolutely dazzling, and absolutely gorgeous!"
Buizel and Ash cheered together while raising their fists up in the air.
"Sensational!"Wallace remarked. "A performance showcase with a power of battle and a nice doze of an appeal!"
The crowd cheered at Ash and Buizel.
"Thanks a lot!"Ash admitted. "Thanks for the applause!"
In the Waiting Room...
"He heard Denise's suggestions and put them into practice perfectly."Brock explained.
"The way Ash and Denise trained their Pokémon so well is terrific!"May chuckled.
"Hey Dawn, your up next."Zoey reminded.
"Dawn, can you please calm down!"Denise begged.
Brock, May and Zoey notice Denise looking at Dawn, who was frantically checking her hair in the mirror.
"I can't believe my hair is nervous too!"Dawn panicked.
Zoey sighed. "What are you up to?"
"My final check."Dawn replied nervously. "Is my hair? Is anything sticking out?"
"Dawn, chill out, you look perfectly fine."Denise assured. "But remember the Pokémon are the real stars like your sister said."
"Denise is right, be confident."Brock agreed.
"But everyone performed so well, I believe I would embarrass myself."Dawn said sadly.
Piplup scolded Dawn and fires BubbleBeam at her face and finally succeeds in calming her down.
"Whoa, Piplup..."Dawn said as she took a deep breath before smiling. "Thanks Piplup, I needed that."
Piplup smiled. "Piplup."
"Way da go, Piplup."May commented.
"So who are you with on the first stage?"Brock asked.
"After the Solaceon Contest, I am going with Ambipom."Dawn replied.
"Piplup!"Piplup cheered.
"I am really looking forward at the two of you going at it."May giggled.
"And we wish you the best of good luck."Denise said kindly.
Dawn nodded in agreement.
On the Stage...
"Now, it's time for our next entry, go!"Marian announced.
The curtains went up as Dawn took out her pokeball.
"Alright, Ambipom! Go- Ah!"Dawn started and began to trip.
"Are you alright?"Marian asked worriedly.
"Yep, I'm fine!"Dawn replied while holding her Capsule Ball.
In the Waiting Room...
The others sighed in relief as Dawn began to do her performance.
On the Stage...
"Ambipom, spotlight!"Dawn called out.
Hearts came out of the Capsule Ball causing Ambipom to appear as she landed on the ground.
"Ambipom's just as ready to perform as the audience are as ready to watch!"Marian commented.
"Double Hit, go!"Dawn ordered.
Ambipom began to use Double Hit.
"That Double Hit can hardly be seen by the naked eye!"Marian stated. "A great, amazing way to show off that tail!"
Ambipom hit the hearts, creating pink sparkles on her body.
In the Waiting Room...
"That's the way."Zoey commented. "Show off Ambipom's true nature! Keep it simple and beautiful!"
"It's so inspiring to see how Aipom's evolved and is working with Dawn so well."May stated.
A proud look grew on Denise's face.
On the Stage...
"Now use Swift!"Dawn ordered.
Ambipom used Double Hit in succession with Swift onto the water.
"Finish it up with Focus Punch!"Dawn ordered.
Ambipom used Focus Punch onto the river causing water to splash against the wall.
"They finish with a flurry!"Marian said."Using a Focus Punch that covers the whole field!"
"Well, the control power with the Coordinator's flawless timing was amazing to behold!"Mr Contesta admitted.
"And remarkable!"Mr Sukizo responded.
"They really showed off on how adorable Ambipom can be."Nurse Joy commented sweetly.
"Power and technique even cuteness!"Wallace stated while standing up. "Thank you for a delightful show!"
The crowd cheered at Dawn and Ambipom.
"And with that performance, we come to the conclusion of our thrilling first round!"Marian announced. "So stay tuned for the announcement of the judges, I wouldn't want their job right now!"
In the Waiting Room...
Piplup jumped into Dawn's arms as she came into the room.
"So how did I do?"Dawn asked.
"Piplup piplup!"Piplup replied.
"Awesome, you and Ambipom really nailed it."Ash complemented.
"Pika pika!"Pikachu agreed.
Ambipom spoke happily.
"You were both amazing out there."Denise chuckled.
"Thanks to Piplup, you two relax into it and have fun."Brock said.
"His right and we were able too."Zoey agreed.
"It was so fun to watch."May commented.
"Thanks a lot, everyone."Dawn responded and a troubled look grew on her face.
"What's wrong, Dawn?"May asked. "Still uneasy?"
"It went fine, but it's just the scores scare me."Dawn admitted.
Denise walked up to her twin sister and placed a hand on her shoulder.
"Dawn."Denise said softly. "Have faith in yourself, we are in this together."
"You are right."Dawn agreed with a small smile.
"Sorry to have kept you all waiting!"Marian called out.
The heroes turned to the monitor to see the screen.
"It's about time."Brock said quietly.
"But the judges did come to a decision!"Marian announced. "And the coordinators that are moving onto the next stage are..."
The cards showed that Ash, Zoey, Dawn, Denise, May and 11 other coordinators have passed the first round.
"These 16 lucky coordinators!"Marian remarked.
"See?"Brock asked. "You are all moving onto the second stage."
"I made it?"Dawn said in surprise. "I really did?"
"Of course you did!"Denise laughed and hugged her twin. "You've done it, Dawn!"
"Alright, Dawn!"Ash chuckled.
Pikachu smiled. "Pikachu!"
"No need to worry."May reminded kindly.
Piplup and Ambipom cheered in happiness.
"Your right, May."Dawn replied. "Thanks to all of you."
"Thanks, but you did it yourself."Ash said and looked at Pikachu. "Right, Pikachu?"
"Pika Pika!"Pikachu agreed.
"Just remember, don't be overconfident."May reminded.
"Right, the real competition starts."Zoey informed.
"I made it this far to win."Dawn remarked and looked at Piplup. "Are you ready, Piplup?"
"Welcome back, sis."Denise said in amusement.
"Right, that's for sure." Zoey admitted and smirked. "I haven't forgotten we're competitors, so don't think I'll go easy on you, Denise."
Denise smirked before looking at Dawn.
"I know and I won't go easy on you either, sis."Denise sneered.
"Right."Dawn answered.
"Isn't this interesting?"Brock chuckled. "Tomorrow all of you are rivals."
"You bet!"Ash agreed.
"Yeah and with one winner!"Dawn stated confidently. "And that's me!"
