Pokemon: Friends to the End
Chapter 100: Aiding the Enemy!
The Champion League battle between Cynthia and Sinnoh Elite Four member Aaron begins with Cynthia's Garchomp and Aaron's Drapion being used.
The match was being televised, and a group of trainers watch at a Pokemon Center, one of the observers being Paul.
"The title battle for the Champion has begun!"the Announcer stated. "In challenging Champion Cynthia, is Aaron of the Elite Four! Here's what at stake for our Bug Type Pokemon specialist's challenge! If he emerges victorious, the title of Champion Master will be his!"
Ash and his friends arrived to watch the battle as well.
"Whoa, they're just getting started."Dawn remarked.
"Pip piplup."Piplup chirped.
"Looks like we got in under the wire."Ash commented.
"Pika."Pikachu agreed.
"That's a relief."Denise said with a small chuckle.
On the television, Aaron orders Drapion to use Pin Missile.
The battle continues until it comes down to Cynthia's Gastrodon and Aaron's reacquired Beautifly.
"And Cynthia dominates the action!"the Announcer stated. "As Aaron's last pokemon, Beautifly, is in for a real tough spot!"
"Solar Beam, let's go!"Aaron ordered.
Beautifly was exhausted, but it had enough energy to attack with Solar Beam.
"Quick Stone Edge!"Cynthia instructed.
Gastrodon uses Stone Edge to negate the attack and knock out Beautifly at the same time.
"Beautifly is unable to battle and Cynthia keeps her title!"the Announcer said. "Is there anybody that Cynthia can't take down?"
Denise remained quiet at the announcer's question.
Aaron praises his Beautifly.
"You battled like a true champ, Beautifly."Aaron assured. "Thank you."
Aaron returned Beautifly back in it's pokeball.
"Cynthia's strong, but who knew she was that strong?"Ash asked. "Aaron was way over his head out there."
"And he was so excited of having his Beautifly back."Dawn said.
"Well, the Elite Four has been training, but so has Cynthia."Denise complemented.
"She's the Champion, alright."Brock agreed and folded his arms. "I don't see her losing that title along time."
The group became alarmed when Paul walked forward.
"How did everything end up?"Paul asked.
Ash looked at Paul in confusion.
"I mean with Chimchar's Blaze."Paul replied.
Ash frowned while an annoyed look grew on Denise's face.
They remembered how Chimchar went out of control and was completely raged when Blaze activated.
"Look I know Blaze is a strong ability!"Ash snapped. "But you never find me relying on something like that in the middle of a battle!"
Paul smirked and leaves without a word.
"Man, what's his problem?"Dawn asked.
"Not right in the head, remember?"Denise reminded with a frown.
Ash looked at Pikachu.
"Hey, why don't we train?"Ash asked.
"Pika pika."Pikachu remarked.
Outside...
Ash decides to train with his pokemon in order to prepare for the Hearthome Gym.
The Pallet Town Trainer had Pikachu, Buizel and Chimchar on his side while Denise had Grotle, Vaporeon, Luxio and Drifloon on her side.
Dawn, Piplup, Brock, Happiny, Croagunk and Sudowoodo stood watching with Turtwig, Staravia, Gliscor, Kirlia and Hoothoot.
"Alright, Pikachu, Chimchar, Buizel, let's run through our plan for the Hearthome Gym!"Ash stated. "I'm counting on you guys, okay?"
Pikachu, Buizel and Chimchar let out brave responds.
"Let's begin then!"Denise stated. "Grotle! Vaporeon! Luxio! Drifloon! Let's do this!"
Grotle used Solar Beam, Vaporeon fired Aurora Beam, Luxio used Spark and Drifloon sent Will-O-Wisp.
The pokemon send their attacks at Pikachu, Buizel and Chimchar while those three defend themselves.
Pikachu fired Thunderbolt, Chimchar fired Flamethrower and Buizel used Water Gun.
The attacks combined causing a big explosion.
"Awesome, but scary!"Dawn shrieked.
"Piplup!"Piplup agreed.
Denise covered her eyes to prevent the wind's blow from hitting her face.
Buizel, Pikachu and Chimchar landed back on the ground.
"Now that's exactly the way you do it!"Ash commented. "You use everything you got to send their attacks right back at them!"
Buizel, Pikachu and Chimchar cheered in agreement.
"So I assume your not backing down?"Denise asked.
"No way, Dennie!"Ash replied with a smile. "Give us all you got!"
"Then let's boost things up!"Denise admitted with a smirk. "Go for it, guys!"
Grotle fired Seed Bomb, Vaporeon used Shadow Ball, Luxio fired Spark and Drifloon used Ominous Wind.
Ash, Pikachu, Buizel and Chimchar defend themselves as a barrage of hard-shelled seeds fell down on them followed by Shadow Ball, Spark and Ominous Wind.
Nearby, Paul tried to read a book, but notices Ash and Denise's training.
Ash and Denise's pokemon continue to practice as Paul takes a closer look.
Another hit by Solar Beam, Aurora Beam, Spark and Thunderbolt caused Pikachu, Buizel and Chimchar sent back and drop on Ash.
Denise gasped as Grotle, Vaporeon, Luxio and Drifloon stopped their attacks.
"Everybody, okay?"Denise asked as she walked forward. "Ash?"
Ash rubbed the back of his head as he, Buizel, Pikachu and Chimchar stood up.
"We're fine."Ash assured with a smile. "Hey Dennie, you call those attacks? That was nothing!"
"Well Ash, nothing stops you."Denise chuckled in amusement.
Brock and Dawn walked up to the duo.
"Say Dennie, what was the new move Grotle learned?"Dawn asked.
"Seed Bomb."Denise responded. "I'm working on a contest combination using a grass type."
"Cool."Ash remarked.
"Using your own moves to defend against your opponent is a good strategy."Brock commented. "But Ash, you've got to hold some moves back otherwise you'll have nothing left."
"Yeah, we've also got a lot of work to do on our timing."Ash admitted. "Okay, let's do it again."
"Alright, but I'm doubling the storm."Denise stated before looking at Kirlia and Hoothoot. "Kirlia! Hoothoot! Come on in!"
"Kirlia."Kirlia giggled.
"Hoothoot."Hoothoot tweeted.
Kirlia and Hoothoot walked into the field.
"Hey, fine by me."Ash remarked.
Ash and Denise headed back to the field as Brock turned around and notice Paul watching.
"Paul, I thought you were already heading out of here."Brock said with a smile.
Happiny hopped out Brock's arms to walk up to Paul's Torterra, Magmar and Gliscor.
"If you've got something you wanna say to me, say it."Paul retorted.
"To tell the truth, your style of training is pretty interesting."Brock admitted. "I was wondering why you asked about Chimchar before."
Paul didn't reply and looked away.
"I'm starting to think Ash is getting to you."Brock commented.
"I can't believe he won't use Blaze that's all."Paul answered in disproval.
"That's just Ash, it's how he operates."Brock responded. "You see, Ash is trying to develop his own battling style. I talked to Reggie while we were in Veilstone City. He told me you were training hard and trying to come up with your own style of battling, is that true?"
"That brother of mine's got a big mouth."Paul commented.
"He worries about you, you know."Brock replied. "But I was a little surprised when he told me he challenged his way around a lot of regions and gyms. Let's see I think he was missing the Battle Frontier Brave Symbol, right?"
"Yeah that's the one."Paul agreed. "There he was winning symbol after symbol, until he loses one battle and gives it all up just like that. He should've been bitter but no. Instead he always smiling always happy. I'll never understand it. I'm not Reggie. I won't do what he did and I will not make the same pathetic mistakes."
Suddenly an explosion rang out causing Paul to glance and see Kirlia, Vaporeon, Luxio, Hoothoot, Grotle and Drifloon to hit the ground.
"Everyone, okay?"Ash asked worriedly.
Kirlia, Luxio, Vaporeon, Hoothoot, Grotle and Drifloon stood up and gave positive responds to Pikachu, Buizel and Chimchar.
"Looks like it."Denise replied with a smile. "Nice work, everyone."
Dawn, Piplup and the other pokemon walked forward.
"Awesome Ash."Dawn admitted. "You took it to a whole new level."
"You mean they took it to a whole new level."Ash corrected.
Luxio started growling in anger which alarmed Denise.
Ash notice Brock walked forward with Paul.
"Paul."Ash said.
Chimchar grew nervous seeing his former trainer causing Piplup, Turtwig and Kirlia to go in front of him.
"You're doing the exact same thing as me when you train."Paul replied.
"No way, Paul!"Ash snapped. "How's this just like you?"
"You're having other pokemon attack you so you boost your pokemon's moves."Paul answered with a smug look. "How is that any different?"
"At least he doesn't train using brute force or when his pokemon are in serious damage."Denise taunted bitterly.
"Lux!"Luxio growled in agreement.
Paul simply huffed and smirked for a moment.
"His training for his match at the Hearthome Gym."Dawn added.
"So your going to battle at the Hearthome Gym?"Paul said.
"Right."Ash agreed. "You battled there, didn't you, Paul?"
Paul scoffed and took out the Relic Badge from his pocket.
"Sure did and it's obvious that I've won."Paul replied.
"Okay, I may not have battled Fantina yet, but I did see her use Hypnosis a lot of times when she battled Denise."Ash admitted. "That's why I'm planning to counter her move as of now."
"So now you think that the first time is the charm?"Paul questioned. "All you have to do is to keep hammering away and all of her ghost type pokemon will fall over."
"I'll win it!"Ash vowed. "I happen to have faith in my pokemon and they've got faith in me too!"
"You're pathetic."Paul responded.
Ash glared and growled for a moment.
"Alright, we'll just show you what we've got!"Ash answered. "Let's have a battle!"
"All you had to say was that you were using Chimchar's Blaze."Paul commented. "That would've been enough."
"I already told you!"Ash shouted angrily. "I don't mess around with Blaze!"
The group glared at Paul, who simply smirked and took out a pokeball.
"Alright then but only one pokemon per side."Paul instructed. "That should be quite enough."
"Okay, fine with me."Ash answered.
Turtwig volunteered to battle and spoke to his trainer.
"Turtwig, what's going on?"Ash asked. "I get it. You wanna get in there too?"
Turtwig nodded. "Turtwig."
Turtwig went into the battlefield while Kirlia sat next to Denise to watch the battle.
"Alright Turtwig, it's all you!"Ash answered.
"Now Honchkrow, stand by for battle!"Paul ordered smugly.
The pokeball opened and Honchkrow appeared in the battlefield.
"Honchkrow!"
"A flying type."Ash said as he took out his pokedex.
"Honchkrow the Big Boss Pokemon and the evolved form of Murkrow."Ash's Pokedex said. "If one utters a deep cry, many Murkrow gather quickly. For this, it is called "Summoner of Night."
"Catchy title."Denise said sarcastically.
"Sounds like quite a pokemon to me."Dawn complemented uncomfortably.
"Pika."Pikachu agreed.
"Thing is Turtwig's a grass-type."Brock stated. "So Honchkrow will be a challenge. Ash will have his hands full."
"Turtwig, when it comes to pure speed, nobody can touch you!"Ash instructed. "So let's use that to our advantage and win this battle!"
"Alright, Honchkrow use Sky Attack!"Paul ordered.
Honchkrow prepared to use Sky Attack.
"Quick Turtwig, Energy Ball!"Ash ordered.
Turtwig fired Energy Ball.
This is great! Sky Attack takes some time to charge up!"Brock remarked. "Turtwig will land first!"
Honchkrow gets hit by Energy Ball, but it inflicts little damage.
"Like that did anything at all!"Paul shouted. "Go Honchkrow!"
Honchkrow charged towards Turtwig.
"Heads up, Turtwig!"Ash warned.
Honchkrow charges as Turtwig jumped and spun forward, dodging the attack.
"Awesome."Ash chuckled.
"Even against Honchkrow, Turtwig's amazing speed can't be beat."Dawn commented.
Piplup and Pikachu cheered in agreement.
"This is not going to end well."Denise thought.
"Use Night Slash!"Paul ordered.
Honchkrow flew forward as one of his wing glowed white.
"Dodge it and use Razor Leaf!"Ash ordered.
Honchkrow followed up with Night Slash, but Turtwig dodges again.
However, Honchkrow comes around with a second Night Slash and manages to hit Turtwig.
Ash and Pikachu gasped in shock while Denise bit her lip.
"You're going too easy!"Brock protested. "Stop dodging!"
"Come on!"Dawn called out. "You can do it!"
Turtwig brushed off the electricity on his body.
"Use Aerial Ace!"Paul ordered.
Honchkrow comes down with Aerial Ace.
"Now Turtwig use Bite!"Ash ordered. "Let's go!"
Honchkrow knocked Turtwig down before the grass type can attack.
"Hey Ash!"Denise shouted angrily. "Cut the cavalier dodging attitude and have Turtwig attack!"
"Not gonna happen."Paul stated smugly. "Use Aerial Ace one more!"
"Turtwig get up!"Ash protested.
Turtwig tries to get up, but Honchkrow hits with another relentless Aerial Ace.
"Can you still battle?"Ash asked.
Turtwig managed to get up and began to glow which shocked the group.
"What's going on?!"Ash demanded.
Dawn gasped. "Can it be?"
"Turtwig is starting to evolve!"Brock stated.
Everyone watched as Turtwig began to grow bigger and change form.
When the glowing stopped, it revealed Turtwig has evolved into Grotle.
"Grotle!"
Grotle stomped on the ground as Ash took out his pokedex.
"Grotle the Grove Pokemon and the evolved form of Turtwig."Ash's Pokedex said. "Grotle lives near water in forests, and leaves the forest during the day to allow light to shine on the tree on its shell."
"Wow!"Dawn replied with a smile. "Turtwig finally evolved! Great!"
"Plup!"Piplup agreed.
A worried look was on Denise's face.
"Yeah!"Ash remarked. "Alright Grotle, I say it's about time to fix it up!"
Grotle nodded. "Grotle."
"Use Aerial Ace!"Paul ordered.
Honchkrow charged toward Grotle.
"Perfect!"Ash complemented. "Now let's give them a taste of your new power by dodging and then using Energy Ball!"
Grotle tries to dodge, but it failed to move quickly enough and gets hit.
"I guess Honchkrow's fast after all."Dawn said.
"Your right, but it's more than Honchkrow's current speed."Brock answered. "It has something to do with Grotle evolving."
Denise didn't respond as she worriedly continued watching the battle.
"Sky Attack, let's go!"Paul ordered with a smirk.
Honchkrow charged up to do Sky Attack.
"Now's your chance, Grotle!"Ash stated. "Use Bite!"
Grotle tried to attack, but ended up stumbling.
"What's wrong, Grotle?"Ash asked.
Grotle managed to get up as Honchkrow charges up.
"Come on, Honchkrow!"Paul instructed. "Get going!"
"Grotle, you've got to turn this around!"Ash protested.
The newly evolved grass type tries to turn around but stumbles again, taking the Sky Attack.
"Come on, Grotle! You're super fast!"Ash reminded. "You should be able to dodge that!"
"A pathetic trainer with his equally pathetic pokemon."Paul insulted with a smirk.
"What?!"Ash questioned angrily.
"Grot?!"Grotle said.
"Alright so where's that faith? If you really think that you can win with faith alone, then you're no better than any lowlife loser trainer out there because you have no idea on how Grotle's changed."
Ash gritted his teeth and growled at Paul.
Denise frowned, but knew Paul was talking about Ash's lack of knowledge.
"Honchkrow use Dark Pulse!"Paul ordered.
Honchkrow fired a Dark Pulse, hitting Grotle on the head and knocking it out.
"Grotle, no!"Ash shouted.
A While Later...
Nurse Joy treated Grotle after the battle.
On the other side of the window, Dawn wonders why Grotle's speed went down.
"Ash, tell me if I'm wrong, but I thought a pokemon were supposed to get stronger when they evolve."Dawn replied. "So then what happened to all of Turtwig's speed?"
Ash looked down quietly.
"It's body did get heavier."Brock replied.
"That is true."Denise agreed. "When my Turtwig evolved into Grotle, he had difficulty moving and attacking. But after I changed the way I battle, my Grotle became better."
Ash looked back at his Grotle with a hint of guilt.
"Aw man."Ash said sadly.
In the Heroes Room...
Ash was trying to cheer Grotle up.
"Grotle, in case if you didn't know I thought that it was the coolest thing for you to evolve in the middle of our battle."Ash admitted. "It just felt like that nothing could keep us winning, you know?"
Grotle sadly looked at his trainer.
"It's like when you were being hit by that strong Dark Pulse and you didn't even budge one bit."Ash commented. "Man, you just stood there and took the whole thing. I'm sorry I didn't tell you to attack when you should've. Of course, your feeling a little off since you just evolved I know that."
Pikachu nodded. "Pikachu."
"But your power is way up and when your speed is too, no one will be able to touch you."Ash assured.
Grotle sighed sadly. "Grotle."
"I don't think Grotle is feeling too well."Dawn stated.
"Piplup."Piplup chirped.
"Don't worry Grotle."Ash assured confidently. "We are in this together."
Grotle looked down and didn't respond.
Later that Night...
Brock, Ash, Dawn and Denise were fast asleep.
Grotle was unable to sleep and stood up causing Chimchar to wake up.
"Char?"Chimchar said.
Grotle tried to leave the room, but his companions wake up and notice.
Pikachu, Kirlia, Piplup, Chimchar, Staravia, Gliscor and Buizel looked at Grotle.
"Pika?"Pikachu asked.
"Grotle."Grotle answered.
Grotle walked out of the room.
"Chimchar chimchar."Chimchar responded.
"Pika pikachu."Pikachu suggested.
"Piplup..."Piplup yawned.
"Kirlia kirl."Kirlia commented.
Pikachu nodded. "Pikachu pika pika."
Pikachu gets Gliscor, Kirlia, Chimchar and Buizel but Staravia and Piplup to follow.
Outside...
Grotle tried to train while running forward, but it stumbled and crashed into a rock.
Grotle gets up and keeps trying to build up speed, but it keeps tripping making it lose hope.
Pikachu, Kirlia, Chimchar, Buizel and Gliscor ran over to Grotle.
Then Paul's Torterra approached them.
Inside the Pokemon Center...
Staravia was pecking Ash with his beak to wake him up.
Piplup does the same to Dawn while Croagunk uses Poison Jab to rouse Brock.
Vaporeon used her paw to wake Denise up.
"Ugh, what is it Vaporeon?"Denise asked.
"Poreon vaporeon."Vaporeon responded firmly.
Ash noticed the pokemon are missing.
"Hey, where is everybody?"Ash asked.
Outside...
Torterra meets up with Pikachu, Kirlia, Chimchar, Buizel and Gliscor.
Chimchar, being personally familiar with it keeps the others from making any aggressive actions towards it, and Torterra displays no hostility.
Looking over the other pokemon, Torterra convinced Gliscor to help out with a demonstration.
Ash, Denise, Dawn and Brock arrived while Piplup was riding on Staravia.
Vaporeon stood next to Denise.
The heroes notice Torterra but stayed out of sight.
"A Torterra."Dawn said.
"Must be Paul's."Ash suggested.
"What is it up to?"Denise questioned.
Gliscor attacks Torterra with Steel Wing, but Torterra takes the hit.
"Wow, it absorbed it."Brock commented.
Gliscor hits Torterra with X-Scissor.
"Look at that."Dawn suggested. "Torterra can't dodge a thing."
"No, it can dodge but it's choosing not to."Brock replied. "It chosen to stand there."
"Standing?"Ash said. "But what for?"
Denise and Vaporeon looked at each other and then the fighting scene.
Gliscor hits with multiple X-Scissor attacks, but Torterra continues to stand strong as Ash, Denise, Dawn and Brock watch with awe.
"Wow."Denise whispered in surprise. "Even after all those hits, Torterra is still standing."
"Vaporeon."Vaporeon answered.
Gliscor attempted another X-Scissor, when Torterra stands on it's hind legs and comes down, pinning Gliscor to the ground before using Frenzy Plant.
Before the tree trunks hit Gliscor, Torterra stopped the attack and the tree trunks withdraw.
"Torterra was just waiting for the perfect moment to attack."Dawn said. "Just like when Piplup uses Bide."
"Piplup."Piplup tweeted.
"And also like a heavy weighted boxer."Brock admitted.
Ash gasped in realisation.
Letting Gliscor get back up, Torterra speaks to Grotle.
Grotle's face lights up with understanding.
"Torterra!"Ash called out.
Ash, Denise, Vaporeon, Dawn and Brock rushed forward.
"Pika pika."Pikachu greeted.
"Kirlia?"Kirlia said.
"Yes Kirlia, we saw everything."Denise answered with a nod and looked at Torterra. "That was an amazing example."
"Thanks, Torterra."Ash remarked. "You were giving Grotle some serious pointers on how to battle, isn't that right?"
Torterra nodded. "Terra."
"I know what exactly were you talking about."Ash responded. "First, you take your opponent's attacks and then when the time is right, whammo!"
"Terra."Torterra agreed and looked at Grotle. "Terra."
Grotle nodded. "Grotle."
Torterra praises Grotle before walking away.
"Using itself as an example was a great way to teach."Brock complemented. "Turtwig may have lost its speed when it had evolved, but the truth is, Grotle's power makes up more for it by a long shot."
"Yeah."Ash agreed and walked up to Grotle. "Grotle, you have your own battling style and my job as a trainer is to make it the best way it can be."
"Grotle grot."Grotle replied.
"Sorry, I got kind of crazed."Ash apologised. "It's my fault, for not knowing it. From here on out, we're gonna work together to build your battling style from the ground up."
Grotle smiled. "Grotle."
Denise smiled at the side where Torterra just left to.
"Since Torterra was Paul's very first pokemon, it properly knows more of it's trainer than anyone else."Denise thought with a small smile. "And yet I wonder sometimes..."
Torterra returns to camp as Paul approached his starter pokemon.
"Your certainly a curious one."Paul retorted wit his eyes closed.
"Torterra."Torterra replied.
The Next Morning...
The four heroes left the room they were in and run into Paul.
"Hey Paul!"Ash called out.
Paul turned around to look at the heroes.
"Last night was really something."Ash remarked. "We wanted to thank Torterra for everything that it did."
"Grot."Grotle agreed.
Paul scoffed and closed his eyes.
"I had nothing to do with what Torterra did."Paul responded rudely.
Paul left the Pokemon Center while Denise simply shook her head.
"What is wrong with you, Paul?!"Dawn scowled with a glare.
"Piplup!"Piplup chirped angrily.
Ash looked at Chimchar.
"Well Chimchar, I guess you can't always judge a pokemon by it's trainer, don't you think?"Ash asked.
"Chimchar."Chimchar replied with a smile.
Then Ash looked at Grotle.
"The next time we battle Paul, we're gonna win it."Ash assured. "I promise."
"First you have to deal with the Hearthome Gym."Brock reminded.
"And after that we do some training together."Denise commented with a confident smirk.
"Right Dennie, thanks."Ash answered with a nod. "It's about time we got our fifth badge and I can't wait!"
"Pika pika!"Pikachu agreed excitedly.
Denise smiled at her crush in approval.
