Chapter 120: To Thine Own Pokemon Be True!
Ash jumped out of the Pokemon Center with Pikachu right behind him.
"Alright, Pikachu!"Ash remarked excitedly. "Time for some Ping Pong training!"
"Pika!"Pikachu cheered.
Denise, Torchic, Kirlia, Dawn, Prinplup, Ambipom and Brock followed Ash outside as Barry rushed up.
"It's finally time for my Sinnoh Pokemon Ping Pong conquest!"Barry laughed proudly.
Ash and Barry started doing the same hitting motions as their friends watched.
"Guys? Not to slow you guys down, but I don't even really understand the rules of Pokemon Ping Pong."Dawn admitted.
This caused Ash and Barry to nearly drop on the ground while Denise sweat dropped.
"Sis, if you didn't know the rules why you didn't ask us what they were in the first place?"Denise questioned.
Dawn smiled sheepishly. "I forgot."
"Then I'll tell you."Barry responded. "Okay, so first of all you have a pokemon and it's trainer that form a team. While a trainer is only allowed to use a Ping Pong paddle, his or her pokemon are allowed to use a part of it's body instead."
"Is that it?"Dawn asked.
"Well other than the fact that the trainer always serves that's really about it."Barry commented. "First team with 11 points wins the game. First team to win three games wins the match."
"Cool!"Dawn remarked and jumped forward. "I'm going to enter too!"
"Now your talking!"Barry replied.
"Then let's do it!"Ash insisted.
"Right!"Denise chuckled with a smile.
A While Later...
Ash, Dawn and Denise fill out their paperwork to register outside of the Ping Pong Tournament hall.
Ash chooses Pikachu as his partner while Dawn picked Ambipom and Denise chooses Kirlia to be her partner.
"Now just write your name in here along with the pokemon you're going to be teaming up with."the lady explained. "After you turn in your paperwork, you're registered."
"Great!"Dawn, Denise and Ash thanked in unison. "Thanks for everything!"
Ash looked at Pikachu.
"Of course, I'll be choosing Pikachu as my partner."Ash said with a smile. "Right, bud?"
"Pikachu!"Pikachu agreed.
"I'll be choosing Ambipom."Dawn admitted. "I get the feeling that Ambipom really likes Ping Pong and Barry agrees."
"Ambi!"Ambipom cheered.
Denise and Kirlia smiled at each other.
"And I'll be choosing Kirlia as my partner."Denise responded kindly.
"Kirlia!"Kirlia giggled in delight and does a small spin.
Barry looked at Prinplup and Torchic.
"Okay, Prinplup and Torchic."Brock said. "Guess the bleachers are for you two and me."
"Prinplup!"Prinplup responded.
"Torchic!"Torchic tweeted.
The group walked to the other side of the tournament hall and notices there were free practice tables for trainers to use.
"Wow!"Brock exclaimed. "Look at all the practice Ping Pong tables they have available."
"And that means we'll be able to get a lot of practice in, Ambipom."Dawn admitted.
Ambipom smiled. "Ambi!"
"So Dawn since there's not much time before the competition, how about a practice match to warm things up?"Ash suggested.
"Sure, your on."Dawn answered and checked her Poketch. "Okay, Heads or Tails?"
"I go for Heads."Ash responded.
Dawn touched her Poketch and the coin landed on Heads.
"Alright!"Ash remarked as he and Pikachu headed to the practice table. "We serve first!"
"Pikachu!"Pikachu answered.
Dawn and Ambipom went to the other side of the practice table.
"Bring it on!"Dawn challenged.
"Ambipom!"Ambipom replied.
"You got it."Ash agreed. "Remember trainers do the serving."
Ash used his paddle to start his first move causing Dawn to hit it back with her paddle.
Dawn, Ambipom, Ash and Pikachu started playing against each other as Brock, Prinplup, Denise, Torchic and Kirlia watched.
As the match commences, a young man walked by noticing the match.
The little ball was getting close where Pikachu was.
"Hit it, Pikachu!"Ash encouraged.
Pikachu hits the small ball back with his tail.
Ambipom returned the ball with tremendous force, but it flew out of bounds past Ash, engulfed in flames and towards the young man.
"Look out!"Dawn called out.
The young man effortlessly caught the ball and was impressed by Ambipom's skill.
The heroes rushed up to the young man.
"Nice catch!"Denise complemented.
"Thank you."the young man said.
"Sorry."Dawn apologised. "Are you alright?"
"Ambi."Ambipom cried sadly.
"I'm fine."the young man answered and handed the ball back to Dawn. "That Ambipom of yours has excellent reflexes and and good thrusts in those power shots that I'm guessing comes from rigorous daily training right?"
"Well, actually if you really wanna know, this is her very first time."Dawn responded.
"Ambi ambi."Ambipom chirped.
"Impressive."the young man remarked. "It's great to see new teams involved, I would say the main thing is don't worry about making mistakes and do your best. Have fun."
"You bet."Ash and Dawn answered in unison.
The young man walked away from the heroes.
"Hey, look at this."Brock insisted and took out a magazine.
Ash, Dawn, Denise and their pokemon notice the magazine was showing the same guy that they were talking to.
"Whoa!"Ash, Dawn and Denise replied in awe.
Later in the tournament hall, all the teams gathered in preparation for the tournament.
"All athletes will please proceed to the arena!"the woman instructed.
Barry, Empoleon, Ash, Pikachu, Dawn, Ambipom, Denise and Kirlia went inside the hall before looking at the line ups on the huge screen.
The four trainers notice all of them were going to compete against different competitors.
"So it's tournament style, huh?"Ash said and looked at Dawn. "Dawn, that means if we both win in the first round, we get to go up against each other."
"Then I'll see you in Round 2."Dawn stated.
"Or maybe it could be me and Kirlia against one of you two."Denise suggested with a smirk.
"Kirlia."Kirlia replied with a smile.
"Right, Dennie."Ash responded.
"Well, looks like I won't be running into any of you unless you somehow make into the semi-finals."Barry bragged proudly. "Of course, we'll be fine but you guys it will be near impossible."
Ash and Denise frowned at Barry as Dawn smiled confidently.
"We'll see about that."Dawn said smugly.
Denise notice the young man on the huge screen with a Shiftry.
"Look guys, it's the man from before."Denise commented.
Barry immediately freak out when he saw the young man's face.
"Excuse me folks, but for your information that guy happens to be none other than O!"Barry admitted. "He's last year's winner with a rep of being the strongest ever! And the fans really respect him because he searches high and low for strong trainers and pokemon to help spread the good word of Pokemon Ping Pong and he does it all over the world!"
"Who knew? He sounds like a cool guy."Ash complemented.
"His a cool guy, alright."Barry agreed. "But we're gonna beat that cool guy and show him who's the strongest! Now please try and give it all you've got, okay?"
Denise suddenly pulled Barry hard by the ear to cry out in pain.
"Ow!"Barry cried out and rubbed his ear. "What was that for?!"
"A special warning to remind you to quit bragging or otherwise you'll end up losing an ear."Denise warned with a frown.
"Kirlia."Kirlia giggled while covering her mouth.
A whistle blows, calling attention to the announcer who informed the contestants it's time to begin.
"Attention, all Ping Pong athletes!"the announcer instructed. "It's time to begin! So gather if you would, please!"
In the stands, a disguised James meets up with Brock, who sat down with Prinplup and Torchic.
James initially panicked though Brock cannot see through the disguise and they started up a conversation.
"Alright, athletes!"the announcer stated and showed the prizes for the winner."The winner of this competition will receive these solid gold Ping Pong balls and a supplementary prizes of year's supply of special pokemon food! So best of luck at winning the prize! Alright then get to your tables and standby!"
Ash faced off against a guy with a Farfetch'd while Denise faced off against a girl with a Hitmontop and Dawn faced off against a scientist with a Alakazam.
"Okay Dawn, don't forget we're here to have fun!"Ash reminded nervously while holding a fan.
"Ash!"Dawn called out. "That's a fan!"
"Oh no!"Ash panicked and quickly picked up a tennis paddle.
"Come on, Ash!"Dawn said. "You've got to relax, please!"
Pikachu looked at his trainer in worry.
Denise looked at Kirlia.
"He was so confident and the next thing you know he is already nervous."Denise commented with a shrug.
"Kirlia."Kirlia responded gently.
"Each table will toss a coin to decide who serves first!"the Announcer explained.
The referees checked on their Poketch and flipped the coins.
Then Denise, Dawn and Ash started facing against their opponents.
Denise and Kirlia started their Ping Pong match against Jewel and her Hitmontop.
"Make sure to watch the ball carefully, Kirlia!"Denise instructed.
"Kirlia!"Kirlia agreed firmly.
When Jewel's Hitmontop hits the ball towards Denise, Kirlia quickly smacked it away from hitting her trainer.
The ball bounced on to Jewel's side causing Denise to earn a point.
"Team Denise earns a point!"the referee announced.
"Yes!"Denise chuckled in delight.
"Kirlia!"Kirlia giggled.
Denise and Kirlia high five each other.
Ash and Pikachu face Wilkinson and his Farfetch'd.
The two opponents started off a consistent round of exchanges which grow heated.
Wilkinson hits the ball and it passes Ash's head.
"Pikachu get it!"Ash ordered.
Pikachu uses his tail to hit the ball back.
"Okay!"Ash remarked. "I got it!"
However Farfetch'd managed to hit the ball and it bounced off the table.
The ball hits Ash's jaw which earns Team Wilkinson first point.
Pikachu looked at Ash to check if he was okay.
"Pikachu?"Pikachu asked.
"I'm fine."Ash assured with a smile. "Sorry."
"Wilkinson gets one point!"the referee stated.
Wilkinson and Farfetch'd grinned at each other.
Dawn and Ambipom were caught in a similar cycle to Ash's match.
The girl plays hard as the ball was hit to Alakazam.
Desperate to determine where the ball will come from, Dawn tries to read Alakazam's movement.
"Right or left."Dawn said quietly. "Which way will it go?"
Dawn sees Alakazam lift it's left hand and tells Ambipom to go to the left.
"Ambipom to the left!"Dawn ordered.
However Alakazam hits the ball to the right, soaring past Dawn and earning Team Scientist a point.
"Team Scientist, one point!"the referee announced.
"Guess I won't know which way will it hit."Dawn said quietly.
Dawn serves the ball to continue her match.
The ball goes towards Alakazam again and it hits it with it's right hand sending the ball past Dawn.
Though Ambipom saves by using her tails, giving Dawn an idea of how to win.
"Hey! That's an idea!"Dawn said happily. "We can return with your two tails!"
The ball goes toward the Scientist, who flinched and the ball blunts off his paddle and to Ambipom.
Ambipom hits the ball with similar force from earlier, setting it on fire and roaring pass Team Scientist earning a point.
"Team Dawn gets a point!"the referee announced.
"Thanks so much, Ambipom!"Dawn thanked.
Ambipom grinned. "Ambipom."
"Now let's keep this up!"Dawn encouraged with a confident smirk.
The matches continue with Ash having lost to Wilkinson while Dawn and Denise prevailed over Scientist and Jewel.
Ash, depressed that he lost, joins Brock, Prinplup and Torchic to watch as Dawn takes on Halverson in the third round.
"Man, we lost."Ash groaned sadly.
Pikachu went next to Prinplup and Torchic.
"Don't feel bad, Ash."Brock reminded with a smile. "It's your first time."
"Yeah, but I let Pikachu down."Ash commented as he rubbed Pikachu's head. "I'm sorry, buddy."
Pikachu simply smiled at his trainer.
"Pika."Pikachu replied.
"But on the other hand, both Dawn and Dennie have won the first and second round."Ash complemented happily. "They are doing great."
Brock nodded in agreement.
"Surprisedly, it is both Ambipom and Kirlia's first time too."Brock responded.
Prinplup and Torchic smiled at Pikachu.
"Prinplup."Prinplup chirped.
"Torchic."Torchic tweeted.
"Pika pika."Pikachu remarked.
With the third round underway and ten points, Dawn and Ambipom fiercely go against Denise and Kirlia.
The two teams each had 10 points, but one of them were trying hard to get their last point so that they move to the next round.
O watches from the side lines, still amazed at Dawn and Ambipom's skill given they were only beginners.
The ball goes pass Dawn and Ambipom saves before she hits the ground.
Ambipom hits the ball with tremendous force, sending it towards Kirlia.
Kirlia tried to hit the ball back, but the force was too much for her.
The ball knocks away from Kirlia's grip and ends hitting the bounds, earning Dawn and Ambipom the winning point.
"And the winner of that artistic round is the team of Dawn and Ambipom!"the Announcer announced.
Dawn and Ambipom cheered in joy as Denise comforted Kirlia.
"Don't feel sad, Kirlia."Denise replied with a smile. "I had a great time doing this tournament with you. We really did amazing playing for the first time, wouldn't you agree?"
A warm smile crept up Kirlia's face.
"Kirlia kirl!"Kirlia answered happily and hugged her trainer.
Torchic felt a bit sad to see that his trainer had lost the Ping Pong tournament.
"I can't believe how Dawn and Ambipom just keep getting better with every Ping Pong match."Brock commented.
Prinplup smiled. "Prinplup."
"Yeah, those two are looking great."Ash agreed and looked at Torchic. "Dennie and Kirlia were awesome too for their first time."
"Torchic."Torchic tweeted with a nod.
"Our two hardworking newcomers, Dawn and Ambipom have made it from the A Block all the way up to this point!"the Announcer stated. "But while they take a well-deserved breather, up next, we've got Barry and Empoleon versus O and Shiftry!"
Denise and Kirlia went to sit next to their companions.
"Barry versus the Ping Pong Champion."Denise said quietly. "Let's see how this works out."
Barry and Empoleon went to the other side of the table to face off against O and Shiftry while Dawn and Ambipom watched from behind.
"Dawn and Ambipom are really going for it."Barry said with a smirk. "But first up, we're gonna make quick work of O and then, we take those two on. After all that's what totally awesome champions do. Ready, Empoleon?"
"Empoleon."Empoleon answered confidently.
Barry hits the ball with his peddle and O hits the ball to Empoleon, who returns it above O's head.
"Way da go!"Barry remarked.
However O ducks his head as Shiftry comes in for the save and Shiftry sends the ball flying pass Barry and Empoleon.
"That's it!"the Announcer declared. "The famous delayed attack!"
"The O and Shiftry team, point!"the referee announced.
"Incredible technique!"Dawn said in awe. "Whoa!"
Dawn sits in astonishment at Shiftry's technique and Ambipom shadow boxes in preparation for the next round.
The match doesn't go much better for Barry and he was swiftly beaten by O.
"And the winner is the team of O and Shiftry!"the Announcer stated.
The crowd let out a loud cheer.
"The winner from the B Block has already been decided! The team of Theodore and Gliscor!"the Announcer announced. "We still have one match remaining in the A Block! It's the Dawn and Ambipom team versus the O and Shiftry team!"
Dawn's match with O begins and she and Ambipom give it their all, however their teamwork was slipping against someone who has a lot more experience with Pokémon Ping Pong.
This was indicated when Shiftry hits the ball causing Dawn and Ambipom to collide while trying to hit it back.
O and Shiftry win the game 11 to 6.
"Incredible!"Dawn thought with a glare. "They're just too strong for us!"
"O and Shiftry Team, game!"the referee stated.
"What's wrong with Dawn?"Ash asked. "They're not moving as well as they were before!"
"They've been completely dominated by the other side and their teamwork is falling apart."Brock admitted.
"No way."Denise said sadly. "And they were doing so well since the beginning."
"Dawn, relax!"Ash called out.
Prinplup, Torchic, Prinplup and Kirlia shouted at Ambipom to not give up.
Dawn slowly stood, but finds herself intimidated by O and Shiftry.
"Relax!"Dawn thought with her eyes shut."Relax!"
As Dawn tries calm herself down, Ambipom places her hand on her trainer's shoulder and reassures her with a motivational shadow boxing display.
"Okay, let's do our best!"Dawn replied confidently.
"Here it comes!"O warned with a smirk.
Dawn and Ambipom were ready to continue the match.
O serves and the ball goes past Dawn.
Luckily Ambipom saves and the ball goes towards Shiftry who hits it to back to Dawn.
Dawn swings and returns, but the force of the impact breaks her paddle.
"No!"Dawn said in shock. "My paddle!"
"Well, win is a win so I'll take it!"O responded.
Taking advantage of the situation, O hits the ball, but Ambipom manages to hit it back.
"How do they return my shot like that?"O questioned.
Ambipom faces off against both O and Shiftry using her two tails on her own very impressively.
"This is beyond belief!"the Announcer commented. "Ambipom is covering for Dawn, who broke her paddle, by taking on O and Shiftry at the same time!"
The Long Tail Pokemon evens the score up, gaining her and Dawn point after point.
With tears in her eyes Dawn yells her support to spur Ambipom onto victory.
"Ambipom!"Dawn cried out. "You can do it, Ambipom!"
Ambipom hits the ball pass O and Shiftry, gaining the eleventh point and winning them the game.
"Game!"the referee announced. "Dawn and Ambipom!"
The crowd cheered loudly at Dawn and Ambipom.
Dawn picked up another paddle and joined Ambipom again, filled with confidence and pride from her pokemon's efforts.
"Ambipom, thanks!"Dawn assured with a smirk. "Let's win this!"
Ambipom smirked as she looked at the opponents with her trainer.
"I'm impressed!"O stated smugly. "But I'm the Champion and there's no way I'm gonna let you win this match!"
O serves the ball to begin the next match against Dawn and Ambipom.
Afterwards...
Dawn sits anxiously outside the Pokemon Center's treatment room.
The girl listened to the TV overhead as it is announced that O and Shiftry won their second consecutive title after beating Theodore and his Gliscor.
"And so while once again dazzling all of their many fans, the experienced and skilled O and Shiftry team came back from one loss in the semifinals to win the match against the Theodore and Gliscor team and take their second consecutive championship!"the Announcer stated.
Then a melody played as the treatment sign dims and Nurse Joy exits with Chansey.
"Ambipom was extremely exhausted, but no real injuries."Nurse Joy responded. "You have nothing to worry about."
"Thanks so much, Nurse Joy."Dawn remarked with a bow.
Ambipom walked up to Dawn with a happy expression as her trainer bend down.
"Ambipom, I am sorry I put so much responsibility on your shoulders, while I did nothing."Dawn apologised with a guilty look.
"Ambipom."Ambipom answered with a grin.
Then O walked up to Dawn and Ambipom.
"Mr O."Dawn said in surprise as she stood up.
"I just witnessed tremendous skill in that last match."O explained. "I'd love to train what could be the most powerful Pokemon Ping Pong players yet."
Dawn was completely surprised as Nurse Joy and Chansey listened to the conversation.
"I do appreciate the offer, but it's Pokemon Contests that really interest me."Dawn replied with a shy smile. "Today, I realised that I still have a whole lot of training to do..."
"I'm sorry, but the truth is, it's Ambipom I wanna train with, not you."O replied with a apologetic look.
"Ambipom?"Dawn said.
Dawn looked at Ambipom as O smiled at the Normal Type.
"You see, I'm very impressed with your abilities."O complemented proudly. "I wanna take you to the very top of the Pokemon Ping Pong world."
"Ambi ambi!"Ambipom cheered as she jumped around swinging her tails in joy.
"Dawn, I do hope you think about it."O responded.
O walks away, leaving Dawn with a troubled look.
"Oh dear, I really don't know."Dawn said sadly.
Later that Night...
Denise was talking to Ash and Brock in one of the rooms while Pikachu, Prinplup, Torchic and Kirlia ate some food in their bowls.
"Barry loses and leaves without saying goodbye."Denise stated in disproval. "This guy really needs to work on being patient."
"I doubt that will happen, Dennie."Ash chuckled with a sheepish smile.
Dawn burst into the room with a frightened expression.
"Dawn, what's wrong?"Denise asked.
"It's Ambipom!"Dawn cried worriedly. "I can't find her anywhere!"
Prinplup, Pikachu, Torchic and Kirlia became stunned of what Dawn just said.
"What did you say?!"Brock questioned.
"Let's go look!"Ash suggested.
The group rush outside to begin searching for Ambipom.
"Ambipom!"Ash called out.
"Pikachu!"Pikachu shouted.
"Ambipom, where are you?!"Dawn asked desperately.
"Prinplup!"Prinplup chirped.
"Ambipom!"Denise shouted.
"Torchic!"Torchic tweeted.
"Kirlia!"Kirlia called out.
Suddenly a peculiar sound coming from behind the Center catches the group's attention.
"Hey, do you hear that?"Brock asked. "What's that noise?"
"It sounds like it's coming from the back."Ash commented.
The group investigate where the sound came from, only to find Ambipom playing with a ping pong ball against the wall.
"Look at how much fun Ambipom's having..."Dawn said with a weak smile.
"Yeah, I've never seen Ambipom so inspired."Brock replied.
"Wow, Ambipom seems to be totally hooked on playing Pokemon Ping Pong."Ash complemented.
Denise notice the troubled look on her sister's face.
"You look sad about this, Dawn."Denise replied.
"It's just that...I don't know what to do."Dawn admitted and looked down. "Earlier today, the guy named O I played against made an offer to train with Ambipom and make Ambipom a powerful Pokemon Ping Pong player."
"Of course, Ambipom looked super amazing out there today."Ash said in realisation.
Dawn looked at Ash.
"What would you do if you were me, Ash?"Dawn asked.
Ash reminisces his time as Ambipom's trainer, when she was just an Aipom before trading her to Dawn.
"What's important is what Ambipom wants to do."Ash answered with a smile.
"But there's a choice the trainer needs to make."Brock added. "Between what a pokemon wants and what's best for them. Part of your responsibility, see?"
Denise nodded in agreement.
A smile grew on Dawn's face as she watched Ambipom practice playing Ping Pong.
"Thanks, Brock."Dawn replied. "Your right."
The Next Morning...
O was preparing to leave in a coach bus until Dawn and the others rushed up to him.
"Mr O?"Dawn asked.
"Oh, hi Dawn."O greeted.
"I thought a lot about what you asked me last night and I've decided the best thing is to let Ambipom figure out what she wants to do."Dawn suggested.
O smiled. "That's great, Dawn."
Dawn looked at Ambipom intently.
"So Ambipom do you want to continue doing contests with me or do you want to play Pokemon Ping Pong?"Dawn asked before holding out Ambipom's pokeball in a Ball Capsule and a ping pong ball on her other hand. "Come on, choose."
Ambipom looked at the capsule ball and the ping pong ball quietly.
Then the Long Tail Pokemon grabbed the ping pong ball, which makes Dawn a little sad.
However, Ambipom grabbed the pokeball and then Dawn's hat and finally Ash's and begins juggling them joyfully as she considers her options.
"Ambipom?"Dawn said.
"Have you figured what your going to do?"Ash asked.
Ambipom gave Dawn and Ash's hats back.
"Which will it be?"Denise questioned quietly.
With Dawn's support, Ambipom hands her back the pokeball.
"So that means you want to do Pokemon Ping Pong?"Dawn asked.
"Ambi ambipom."Ambipom answered happily.
Dawn looked at O.
"Take good care of Ambipom."Dawn insisted. "Promise me?"
"I promise that something you won't have to worry about."O assured with a smile.
Ambipom goes next to O and gives a thumbs using her tail as Pikachu, Prinplup, Torchic and Kirlia wave goodbye to her.
"My Pokemon Ping Pong Training Center is located in Vermilion City in Kanto."O admitted. "Come visit anytime."
Brock, Ash and Denise smiled hearing this.
"It's in Kanto."Brock said.
"So it's not that far."Denise chuckled.
"That means we can go there anytime you want."Ash remarked.
Dawn and Ash walked up to Ambipom.
"Now you stay well and get strong."Dawn encouraged.
"Good luck."Ash commented.
Ambipom happily shook Dawn and Ash's hands with her tail.
Then O and Ambipom hit the road as the four heroes and their pokemon wave Ambipom goodbye.
"Make lots of new friends!"Brock said.
"Have fun playing Ping Pong!"Denise called out.
"And good luck, Ambipom!"Dawn shouted.
"See you soon!"Ash laughed.
Pikachu, Prinplup, Torchic and Kirlia shouted farewell at Ambipom.
Ambipom waved back at her friends as she leaves for her new future as a Pokemon Ping Pong Champion.
