Chapter 122: Battle on Ice!
In the Snowpoint Gym...
Denise was preparing to face off against Candice while Zoey, Ash, Dawn, Lucas and Brock sat down to watch the battle.
"I hope you're as good as Zo-Zo says you, Denise!"Candice said with a smile. "Because I wanna see what you've got!"
"Don't worry, Candice!"Denise assured confidently. "I'll show you how me and my pokemon battle and win!"
"You really want to challenge me, Denise?"Candice asked with a smirk. "Sure thing! I was waiting for someone tough! But I should tell you, I'm tough because I know how to focus. Pokemon, fashion, romance...It's all about focus! I'll show you just what I mean. Get ready to lose!"
Denise looked at Candice quietly.
"The Gym Battle between Denise the challenger and Candice the Gym Leader is about to begin!"Mr Honcho announced. "Both sides will use four Pokémon each and the battle will be over when all four Pokémon on either side are unable to continue! In addition, only the challenger is aloud to make substitutions!"
"Alright Sneasel, let's show them some kiai!"Candice stated as she threw her pokeball.
The pokeball opened and Sneasel appeared on the battlefield.
"Sneasel!"
"A Sneasel, Huh?"Denise asked as she brought out her pokeball. "Kirlia, come on out!"
Denise's pokeball opened causing Kirlia to come out.
"Kirlia!"Kirlia said happily with a bow.
"You can do it, Kirlia!"Dawn cheered.
"Show them what your made of!"Ash called out.
"Go for it!"Lucas chuckled.
"Pikachu!"Pikachu called out.
"Prinplup!"Prinplup chirped.
Riolu didn't say anything as he focused how the first match would turn out.
"A psychic type against my Sneasel?"Candice said in surprise and smiled. "Sneasel use Fury Swipes!"
Sneasel started skating towards Kirlia as her claws started glowing white.
"Kirlia, dodge it!"Denise ordered.
Kirlia skated on ice as well as she did a twirl to dodge Sneasel's Fury Swipes.
"Sneasel use Icy Wind!"Candice ordered.
Sneasel attacked Kirlia with Icy Wind.
"Kirlia!"Denise shouted.
"Sneasel, Faint Attack!"Candice ordered.
Sneasel prepares to hit Kirlia with Faint Attack.
"Counter the attack with Ice Punch!"Denise ordered.
Kirlia hits Sneasel on the stomach before skating back to her trainer.
"Aerial Ace!"Candice ordered.
Sneasel skated towards Kirlia in quick speed.
"Did she just say, Aerial Ace?!"Ash said in shock.
"Pika!"Pikachu gasped.
"Kirlia, dance on the ice to dodge it!"Denise ordered.
Kirlia countered Sneasel's fast ice skating technique by skating and dancing beautifully around the icy battlefield like a ballerina.
"Wow, Denise's Kirlia sure loves to dance even during a battle."Zoey remarked with a smile.
"Well, Kirlia does dance when Denise is happy and she is filled with energy."Brock complemented.
"Just like in a Pokemon Contest."Lucas chuckled.
"Don't let this stop you, Sneasel!"Candice called out. "Use Faint Attack again!"
Sneasel started skating towards Kirlia and getting closer towards her.
"Kirlia, spin to dodge!"Denise called out.
Kirlia leapt up and did a big twirl to dodge Sneasel's attack that was close on hitting her.
"Sneasel use Fury Swipes!"Candice ordered.
Sneasel skated quickly before leaptung into the air to hit Kirlia with Fury Swipes.
"Sneasel use Icy Wind!"Candice ordered.
"Kirlia use Confusion!"Denise ordered.
Kirlia hits Sneasel with Confusion to confuse and prevent her from using Icy Wind.
"Huh?!"Candice said in surprise.
"Now it's your chance, Kirlia!"Denise said with a smirk. "Use Ice Punch!"
Kirlia hits Sneasel with Ice Punch causing the Sharp Claw Pokemon to be slammed against an ice rock and fainted.
"Sneasel!"Candice called out.
"Sneasel is unable to battle!"Mr Honcho announced. "Kirlia wins!"
"Great work, Kirlia."Denise remarked proudly.
Kirlia smiled at her trainer.
"Kirlia."Kirlia responded gently.
"Rest for now."Denise instructed and took out her pokeball. "Return."
Candice returned Sneasel into her pokeball.
"Denise, you're kiai is strong. But let's see how you do with my next pokemon!"Candice declared and took out her second pokeball. "Piloswine, show us your kiai!"
The pokeball opened and Piloswine appeared in the battlefield.
"Piloswine!"
"Alright, Luxray!"Denise stated and threw out her next pokeball. "Your on!"
The pokeball opened causing Luxray to appear and land in the battlefield.
"Luxray!"
"Denise is choosing Luxray?"Dawn said in disbelief. "But electric types have a disadvantage against ground types."
"Prinplup."Prinplup chirped.
"True, but this isn't Luxray's first time battle against a pokemon that he has a disadvantage to."Brock reminded.
"Oh yeah!"Ash responded in realisation. "Luxray defeated Roark's Geodude when he was still a Luxio."
"Then let's see how Luxray does against a ground type which is also a ice type."Lucas suggested.
"Piloswine use Hail!"Candice ordered.
Piloswine used Hail to make a hailstorm happen in the battlefield.
"Snowing in the Gym."Zoey commented.
"It's so cold!"Dawn whimpered as she rubbed her arms.
"Prinplup!"Prinplup agreed.
"Luxray use Shock Wave!"Denise ordered.
Luxray fired Shock Wave towards Piloswine.
"Dodge it!"Candice ordered.
Piloswine dodged Luxray's Shock Wave.
"That Piloswine has speed."Denise mumbled with a frown. "Luxray, Night Slash!"
Luxray rushed forward and hits Piloswine with Night Slash.
As it continued to hail, Luxray started to get buffeted by it.
"Luxray, are you okay?"Denise asked.
"Luxray."Luxray growled softly.
"Piloswine use Avalanche!"Candice ordered.
Piloswine's body glows light blue and a dark cloud appears above Luxray.
Chunks of ice then rain down from the cloud and strike Luxray causing him to cry out in pain.
"Luxray, hang in there!"Denise protested. "Use Wild Charge!"
Luxray charged towards Piloswine as he surrounded himself in electricity.
"Piloswine use Earthquake, please!"Candice ordered with a smile.
Piloswine started making the battlefield shake violently causing the Gleam Eyes Pokemon to be sent back.
Denise, Zoey, Ash, Dawn, Lucas, Brock, Pikachu and Prinplup watched the sight in shock.
Luxray hit on the icy ground and began struggling to get back.
"Luxray, return!"Denise ordered quickly and took out her pokeball. "Take a good rest. You'll need it."
"Denise, it looks like I have got a little hint about the way you battle."Candice admitted. "You most of the times use the pokemon that have disadvantages towards their opponents and I gotta say it's interesting. But that style can be a little troublesome, you know?"
"I know that."Denise assured and took out a pokeball. "But I'm not giving up! Go, Torchic!"
The pokeball opened and Torchic appeared in the battlefield.
"Torchic!"
"Denise is using Torchic."Ash remarked. "Fire types have an advantage against ice types."
"Pikachu!"Pikachu agreed.
"Piloswine use Earthquake!"Candice ordered.
Piloswine started making the battlefield shake violently again, but Torchic was ready.
"Torchic, jump on the ice rocks to dodge!"Denise ordered.
Torchic quickly jumped on the ice rocks to avoid being hit by the ground type move.
"Use Avalanche, Piloswine!"Candice ordered.
"Hit Piloswine with Fire Spin!"Denise ordered.
Torchic opens his mouth and a ball of fire appeared in it.
The Chick Pokemon then shoots a vortex of fire at Piloswine from his mouth, defeating her.
"Piloswine is unable to battle!"Mr Honcho declared. "Torchic is the winner!"
"Torchic, you did great out there!"Denise chuckled.
"Torchic!"Torchic tweeted happily.
"Yeah!"Dawn cheered. "Torchic did it!"
"Prinplup!"Prinplup chirped.
"Yeah, but Ms Senior still got two pokemon left."Zoey stated. "And I got a strong feeling who is coming up next."
Ash, Dawn and Brock looked at Zoey in confusion while Lucas and Riolu focused on the match.
"I guess fire can still beat the ice, no matter if the ice is too big."Denise sneered.
Candice returned Piloswine in her pokeball.
"Your Torchic's Fire Spin was impressive, Denise."Candice responded and took out her third pokeball. "But don't get too comfortable! Froslass, show'em your kiai!"
Candice threw out her pokeball and Froslass appeared in the battlefield.
"Froslass."
Denise looked at Torchic.
"Torchic, do you want to still battle?"Denise asked.
"Torchic."Torchic chirped confidently.
"Torchic use Peck!" Denise ordered.
Torchic charged forward with his beak glowing.
"Froslass use Psychic!"Candice ordered.
Froslass stopped Torchic from attacking with Psychic.
Denise gasped in shock.
"No way!"Ash exclaimed.
"They stopped Torchic in his tracks!"Brock said in surprise.
"Now use Blizzard!"Candice ordered with a smirk.
Froslass blew Torchic away and he smashed into an ice rock.
"Torchic!" Denise cried out.
Torchic got back up and glared at Froslass.
"We're not down yet!"Denise stated with a glare. "Use Ember!"
Torchic fired Ember.
"Froslass, give them a Blizzard!"Candice ordered with a wink.
Froslass raised her arms into the air and releases a blizzard from her hands into the air.
The blizzard shoots up, then curls around and circles around Torchic.
"Oh my gosh!"Denise whispered in disbelief. "Torchic! Use Ember quick!"
"Double Team!"Candice ordered.
Froslass made copies of herself and avoided Torchic's Ember.
The copies surrounded Torchic, causing the Chick Pokemon to become worried.
"Which is the real one?"Denise asked worriedly.
"If they don't find the real Froslass soon, they could lose!"Lucas warned.
"Hurry up and attack, Torchic!"Dawn called out.
"You've gotta make your move now!"Ash protested.
"Pika pika!"Pikachu encouraged.
"Prinplup!"Prinplup shouted.
"So Denise, what are you gonna do now?"Candice asked with a smirk.
Denise bit her lips before she came up with an idea.
"Torchic use Hidden Power!"Denise ordered.
Candice was confused after hearing that.
"Hidden Power?"Dawn repeated.
"But Normal type moves have no effect on a Ghost type like Froslass!"Lucas commented.
Torchic blasted all of the Froslass copies with Hidden Power.
The real Froslass was revealed to be on Torchic's left.
"There it is!"Denise said with a smile. "Use Ember!"
Torchic blasted Froslass with Ember.
"Froslass!"Candice called out. "No!"
"I get it!"Zoey answered in realisation. "They used Hidden Power to knock down all the Froslass copies and find the real one!"
"Awesome job, Denise!"Ash complemented.
"Pikachu!"Pikachu remarked.
"Quick Froslass, use Shadow Ball!"Candice ordered.
Froslass fired Shadow Ball towards Torchic.
"Dodge it, Torchic!"Denise ordered.
Torchic jumped up and dodged the Shadow Ball.
"Use Peck!"Denise ordered.
Torchic continually pecked Froslass on her head.
"Use Psychic!"Candice ordered with a frown.
Froslass blasted Torchic with Psychic and sent him back to Denise.
Torchic and Froslass got back up and panted.
"Time to finish this!"Denise stated. "Torchic use Fire Spin!"
"Use Shadow Ball, Froslass!"Candice ordered.
Torchic and Froslass fired their attacks at each other and they both made contact.
When the smoke cleared, both Torchic and Froslass were still standing.
"Torchic's Fire Spin made contact!"Ash said in awe.
"But so did Froslass' Shadow Ball."Zoey added.
But then Torchic and Froslass collapsed and fainted, much to Denise and Candice's shock.
"Torchic and Froslass are both unable to battle!"Mr Honcho announced.
"Poor Torchic."Dawn said sadly.
"Prinplup."Prinplup chirped quietly.
Denise returned Torchic into his pokeball.
"You were amazing today, Torchic."Denise assured kindly. "Rest well, okay?"
Candice returned Froslass into her pokeball.
"I'm going to break the ice and bring out my last resort pokemon!"Candice declared and took out her fourth pokeball. "Abomasnow, show them your kiai!"
The pokeball opened and Abomasnow appeared in the battle.
"Abomasnow."
"Whoa!"Zoey chuckled. "It's now Abomasnow's turn! She's Miss Senior's top pokemon!"
"Abomasnow was pretty hard for me to beat."Lucas stated.
"Noctowl, come on out!"Denise stated and threw out her pokeball.
The pokeball opened and Noctowl appeared in the air.
"Noctowl!"
"So now you're using a Flying type?"Candice asked. "I've gotta admit, you sure like using Pokémon that aren't good match ups."
"I have no worries!"Denise responded. "Noctowl, Heat Wave!"
Noctowl activated Heat Wave and flew towards Abomasnow.
"Abomasnow, Ice Shard!"Candice ordered.
Abomasnow releases a glowing light blue ball of ice from her mouth at Noctowl.
Both attacks collided with each other and created a smoke cloud.
"Now, use Aerial Ace!" Denise ordered.
Noctowl flew towards Abomasnow and hit her with Aerial Ace.
"Abomasnow, Ice Punch!" Candice ordered.
Abomasnow was about to hit Noctowl with Ice Punch.
"Block it with Reflect!" Denise ordered.
Noctowl created a glass wall to protect himself, but Abomasnow smashed through it with sheer power and punched Noctowl.
"Noctowl!" Denise shouted in worridness.
Noctowl recovered from the attack.
"Alright, use Supersonic!" Denise ordered.
Noctowl used Supersonic and caused Abomasnow to become confused.
"Great!" Denise remarked. "Now use Heat Wave!"
Noctowl fired Heat Wave at Abomasnow and caused some super effective damage.
"Snap out of it, Abomasnow!" Candice encouraged. "Use Blizzard!"
Abomasnow snapped out of the confusion amid fired Blizzard.
"Noctowl, dodge it!" Denise ordered.
Noctowl flew out of the way.
"Hit Abomasnow with a bunch of Aerial Aces!" Denise ordered.
Noctowl hit Abomasnow with quick speed from every angle.
"Abomasnow, get ready to hit Noctowl with Wood Hammer!" Candice stated.
Abomasnow carful watched Noctowl's movements before hitting him with Wood Hammer.
Denise and the others became shocked as Noctowl crashed into the ground and fainted.
"Noctowl!"Denise shouted.
"Noctowl is unable to battle!"Mr Honcho announced. "Abomasnow's the winner!"
"Alright!"Candice cheered in delight.
"Noctowl too..."Ash said in disbelief.
"Pikachu."Pikachu whispered.
"That was pretty quick."Lucas admitted.
"And Noctowl tried so hard."Dawn said sadly.
"Prinplup."Prinplup chirped.
"Denise now lost two pokemon and has decide which one she'll need to win this match."Brock stated.
"But the question is which one?"Zoey questioned.
Denise returned Noctowl to his pokeball.
"You did really great, Noctowl."Denise assured. "Get a long rest."
Denise looked at Abomasnow as she became lost with her thoughts.
"Now I lost two pokemon."Denise thought. "Luxray wouldn't be a good match against Abomasnow, so I'll have use the pokemon I used at the beginning."
Denise took out Kirlia's pokeball.
"Kirlia, it's all up to you!"Denise declared.
The pokeball opened and Kirlia appeared.
"Kirlia!"Kirlia greeted with a bow.
"Hey Denise! I can sense your will to win, but I promise you I'm not about to lose!"Candice replied. "Ambomasnow use Blizzard!"
Ambomasnow fired Blizzard towards Kirlia.
"Kirlia, spin and dodge it!"Denise ordered.
Kirlia twirled and dodged Abomasnow's Blizzard before skating and dancing on the icy battlefield again like she did before.
"Use Wood Hammer!"Candice ordered.
"And dodge every one of them!"Denise ordered with a smile.
Abomasnow tried hitting Kirlia with Wood Hammer, but the Emotion Pokemon kept on dodging.
"Now Kirlia use Magical Leaf!"Denise ordered.
"Abomasnow counter it with Razor Leaf!"Candice ordered.
Kirlia and Abomasnow fired their Grass type attacks and created a big smoke cloud.
Kirlia looked around for Abomasnow.
"Use Ice Shard!"Candice ordered.
Out of nowhere, Abomasnow fired Ice Shard and sent Kirlia crashing into the cold freezing floor.
"Kirlia!"Denise cried out. "You have to move!"
Kirlia tried to get back up, but Abomasnow grabbed her and held her in the air.
Denise, Ash, Lucas, Dawn, Zoey and Brock gasped at the sight.
"Get yourself loose, Kirlia!"Denise encouraged.
Kirlia struggled in Abomasnow's grip.
"Guess it's time to finish this!"Candice remarked with a smirk. "Abomasnow, use Ice Punch!"
Abomasnow prepared to finish Kirlia with Ice Punch.
"We're not losing this!"Denise shouted determinedly. "Kirlia, block that Ice Punch with Psychic!"
Kirlia stopped Abomasnow from attack with Psychic, much to Candice's surprise.
"Now, use Ice Punch!"Denise ordered.
Kirlia was able to free one of her arms and hit Abomasnow with Ice Punch.
Abomasnow let go of Kirlia and the Emotion Pokémon landed on the ground.
"We've still got some kiai left!"Candice said sternly. "Abomasnow, Wood Hammer!"
Abomasnow ran towards Kirlia to hit her with Wood Hammer.
"Kirlia, dodge now!Denise ordered.
Kirlia jumped high into the air and Abomasnow hit an ice rock instead.
When the dust cleared, Abomasnow had her hand trapped in the ice rock.
"No way!"Candice said in disbelief.
"Finish it off, Kirlia!"Denise instructed with a smirk. "Use Magical Leaf!"
Kirlia fired Magical Leaf at Abomasnow which created a huge explosion.
"Abomasnow!"Candice called out.
When the smoke cleared away, it revealed that Abomasnow had swirls on her eyes.
"Abomasnow is unable! Kirlia wins!"Mr Honcho announced. "Which means the victory goes to Denise the challenger from Twinleaf Town!"
Denise gasped in amazement and rushed up to Kirlia.
"Yes!"Denise cheered as she gave Kirlia a big hug. "We did it, Kirlia! We won! I'm so proud of you!"
Kirlia smiled and hugged Denise back.
"Kirlia!"Kirlia giggled happily.
Ash, Dawn, Lucas, Pikachu, Prinplup and Riolu cheered at Denise and Kirlia's victory as Zoey and Brock smiled in approval.
Later that Day...
Outside the Snowpoint City Gym, Candice congratulated Denise as Kirlia, Noctowl, Torchic and Luxray stood next to their trainer.
"Wow! You and your pokemon are great, Denise! You've earned my respect! I think your focus and will bowled us over totally!"
"Miss Senior."Zoey responded. "Are you forgetting something?"
"Oh, that's right!"Candice giggled and took out the Icicle Badge. "I'm supposed to give you this! You've earned it."
Denise smiled as she picked up the Icicle Badge.
"Thanks, Candice!"Denise thanked gratefully and held up the Icicle Badge. "We did it! We earned our seventh gym badge! The Icicle Badge!"
Kirlia, Noctowl, Torchic and Luxray cheered at their victory.
"Your gym battle was awesome as always, Dennie."Lucas commented.
"You said it, Lucas."Dawn agreed.
"Without a doubt."Brock complemented.
Prinplup nodded. "Prinplup."
Ash smiled at Pikachu.
"I guess that means tomorrow we're up next."Ash chuckled. "Right, Pikachu?"
"Pikachu!"Pikachu cheered excitedly.
