Chapter 127: Evolving Strategies!
At Lake Acuity...
Ash and Paul continue their Full Battle with both sides having one pokemon down and left with only five.
The next part of the match was Pikachu facing off against Paul's Magmortar.
"Magmortar..."Ash said quietly and looked at Pikachu. "Pikachu, don't let your guard down!"
Pikachu nodded. "Pika."
Dawn took out her Pokedex to scan Magmortar.
"Magmortar the Blast Pokemon and the evolved form of Magmar."Dawn's Pokedex buzzed. "It launches fireballs that can reach temperatures over 3,600 degrees from the ends of its arms and lives in volcanic craters."
"It looks powerful."Denise complemented.
"Since Paul knew Ash was going to use Pikachu, why he isn't using a Ground type pokemon instead?"Dawn asked.
"He may be thinking that using a Ground type won't matter cause Ash could simply switch to a Water type like Buizel anytime."Brock explained.
"Paul is just not thinking about types, he is two steps ahead."Reggie admitted. "I'm sure as the battle progresses, we'll find out why Magmortar is up."
"Pikachu, let's go!"Ash ordered. "Use Quick Attack now!"
Pikachu rushed towards Magmorator using Quick Attack and successfully hits him.
However, after Pikachu lands, his body suddenly goes up in flames.
Denise, Torchic, Lucas and Riolu became shocked at the sight.
"Pikachu!"Ash gasped.
"Magmorator hasn't done a thing, so what's going on?"Dawn asked.
"That is Magmorator's special ability called Flame Body."Brock replied. "It's a move that makes direct contact with Magmorator which gives the chance for the opponent to be burned."
Paul smirked at the sight.
"Pikachu, are you alright?"Ash asked.
"Pika!"Pikachu responded as a bit of electricity appeared on his cheeks.
"Alright then Pikachu, Thunderbolt!"Ash ordered.
Pikachu fired Thunderbolt towards Magmorator.
"Magmorator, Flamethrower!"Paul ordered.
Magmorator unleashed Flamethrower causing it to combine with Pikachu's Thunderbolt which create a strong gust for a moment.
"Man...that's powerful."Ash thought and called out Pikachu's next attack. "Alright! Volt Tackle, go!"
Pikachu charged towards Magmorator.
"Use Rock Tomb!"Paul ordered.
Magmortar fired Rock Tomb attacks in Pikachu's path, stopping his Volt Tackle cold before he takes even more damage from his burn.
"Pikachu, you gotta hang in there!"Ash protested.
Pikachu slowly stood up from the ground.
"Use Smog!"Paul ordered.
Magmortar releases a poisonous cloud that heads straight towards Pikachu.
"Pikachu, Thunderbolt!"Ash ordered.
Pikachu uses the Thunderbolt Counter Shield technique that he mastered for the Gym battle against Fantina which successfully repels the Smog.
"What?"Paul said in surprise.
"I never see that Thunderbolt attack before."Lucas responded.
"Pikachu's Counter Shield!"Dawn remarked. "Awesome!"
"It's amazing how it got rid of the Smog."Reggie complemented.
"That is the technique Pikachu used when Ash was battling Fantina in the Hearthome Gym."Denise commented with a smile.
Pikachu stopped doing the shield, only to get damaged by his burn again.
"Its Magmortar's Flame Body."Reggie said. "The burn effect is still going on. This is looking bad. The longer this battle continues, the greater disadvantage for Pikachu."
"Magmortar, Flamethrower!"Paul ordered.
Magmortar blasted Flamethrower towards Pikachu.
"Use Iron Tail from above!"Ash ordered.
Pikachu jumped out of the Flamethrower's path and successfully strikes Magmortar across the head with Iron Tail, but he subsequently takes more burn damage after landing.
"Quick Pikachu, come here!"Ash ordered.
Pikachu rushed up to Ash as he bent down to talk to him.
"You battled hard so take a rest, okay?"Ash asked.
"Pikachu."Pikachu responded.
"Now Buizel, I choose you!"Ash declared and threw out his pokeball.
The pokeball opened causing Buizel to appear in front of Magmortar.
"Bui bui!"
"You can do it, Buizel!"Dawn called out.
"Prin prinplup!"Prinplup encouraged.
"Buizel is up and Paul still has Magmortar out to battle it."Denise thought in concern.
"Aqua Jet!"Ash ordered.
Buizel used Aqua Jet which hits Magmortar on the chest and sends it reeling back.
"Water Pulse!"Ash ordered.
Buizel sent Water Pulse towards Magmortar.
"Now Rock Tomb!"Paul ordered.
Magmortar creates a shield of rocks to protect itself from the Water Pulse.
"They're using Rock Tomb as a shield!"Brock exclaimed.
"That move has no chance against a water type attack."Ash responded confidently. "Alright, Buizel use Aqua Jet!"
Water Pulse smashes through the rocks, but Buizel halts his Aqua Jet to find Magmortar was nowhere to be seen.
"Smog, let's go!"Paul ordered.
Buizel looks up to see a now airborne Magmortar execute the move, which hits Buizel and poisons him, causing him to reel in pain.
"Buizel!"Ash shouted.
"That Rock Tomb was to keep Buizel from seeing what Magmortar was up to!"Brock stated.
Magmortar landed and Paul recalls it, surprising Ash and Buizel.
"Returning now?"Ash said in surprise.
"Ursaring, stand by for battle!"Paul ordered.
The pokeball opened causing Ursaring to appear and let out a roar.
"Buizel use Water Gun now!"Ash ordered.
Buizel fired Water Gun towards Ursaring.
"Ursaring, Hammer Arm!"Paul ordered.
Ursaring used Hammer Arm, which successfully counters the water attack.
"How did he counter Ursaring's Hammer Arm?"Ash asked quietly.
"Now Bulk Up!"Paul ordered.
Ursaring uses Bulk Up, which increases it's attack and defence.
"Ursaring just increased its defence and attack."Ash responded. "Who cares? Buizel use Aqua Jet!"
"Ursaring, Slash!"Paul ordered.
Ursaring, with its buffed power and resistance, powers through Aqua Jet and hits Buizel hard with Slash.
"Man, Ursaring's attacks are a lot more stronger than Buizel's."Lucas responded with a frown.
Buizel slammed onto the ground.
"Focus Blast!"Paul ordered.
Ursaring fired Focus Blast towards Buizel.
"Spin, Buizel!"Ash ordered. "Use Aqua Jet!"
Buizel use an Aqua Jet Counter Shield, which creates a typhoon of water upon which Focus Blast backfires onto Ursaring.
"So tell me Paul, how do you like the taste of our counter shield?"Ash asked. "Pikachu is not the only who can use it."
Paul doesn't reply as Ash calls out Buizel's next attack.
"Buizel use Sonic Boom!"Ash ordered.
Buizel fired Sonic Boom towards Ursaring.
"Ursaring, Hammer Arm!"Paul ordered.
Ursaring runs through the Sonic Boom and lands a direct hit on Buizel, smashing him into the ground.
"Buizel, return!"Ash ordered and took out Buizel's pokeball.
Buizel gives Ash a thumbs up and insists he was fine to stay in.
"I gotcha! Aqua Jet!"Ash ordered.
Denise bit her lip as Buizel charged forward with Aqua Jet.
"Focus Blast!"Paul ordered.
Buizel's Aqua Jet gets halted by Ursaring's dead on Focus Blast, which takes the Sea Weasel pokemon out of the battle.
"Buizel is unable to battle!"Olivier announced. "Ursaring wins!"
"Poor Buizel."Dawn said sadly.
"Prinplup."Prinplup chirped.
"Alright Buizel, return!"Ash ordered and Buizel returned back into his pokeball. "Thanks Buizel. Now take a good rest."
"Buizel got eliminated because of Ash's poor judgement."Reggie commented.
"Yeah, he really should've return Buizel when he had the chance."Denise agreed.
"Alright, Staraptor! I choose you!"Ash declared.
Ash throws out his pokeball causing Staraptor to appear in the air.
"Staraptor!"
"Staraptor use Aerial Ace!"Ash ordered.
Staraptor flew forward using Aerial Ace.
"Ursaring, counter it with Hammer Arm!"Paul ordered.
Ursaring counters with Hammer Arm, but Staraptor dodges and scores a clean hit with Aerial Ace.
"Focus Blast!"Paul ordered.
Ursaring fires Focus Blast, which hits Staraptor in mid-air, although he manages to shake it off.
"Close Combat!"Ash ordered.
Staraptor flew towards Ursaring with it's claws out.
"Ursaring use Slash!"Paul ordered.
Staraptor prepared to use Close Combat, but Ursaring's Slash attack stops him cold.
"Hammer Arm!"Paul ordered. "Let's go!"
Ursaring then Hammer Arms Staraptor into the ground, taking him out of the match.
"Staraptor!"Ash yelled out. "No!"
"Staraptor is unable to battle!"Olivier announced. "And Ursaring is the winner!"
"Now Ash has three pokemon left."Lucas complemented.
A worried look appeared on Denise's face as Ash returned Staraptor in his pokeball.
"Staraptor, return!"Ash ordered and looked at the pokeball. "Thanks, Staraptor. Take a good rest."
Paul returned Ursaring into its pokeball and took out his next pokeball.
"Electabuzz, stand by for battle!"Paul declared.
Electabuzz appeared in the battlefield.
"Okay! If its Electabuzz then Chimchar I choose you!"Ash stated and threw out his pokeball.
The pokeball opened causing Chimchar to appear in front of Electabuzz.
"Chimchar!"
Chimchar shoots a menacing look at his former Trainer.
"Here we go!"Ash replied. "Flamethrower!"
Chimchar fired Flamethrower towards Electabuzz.
"Protect!"Paul ordered.
Electabuzz uses Protect to evade any damage from Chimchar's Flamethrower.
"Now Light Screen!"Paul ordered.
"Another defence move?"Dawn said in confusion.
Electabuzz put up another Light Screen before Paul immediately recalling him.
"Whoa, Electabuzz just used Protect and then Light Screen on top of that."Brock responded.
"I'm certain Paul's strategy all along was to first use Protect to cover Electabuzz and then Light Screen to cover his next pokemon."Reggie explained.
"I can't believe I'm saying this, but that is a really good idea."Denise thought honestly.
"Torterra, stand by for battle!"Paul ordered.
Paul's pokeball opened causing Torterra to appear in front of Chimchar.
"Terra!"
"Paul knows we have the advantage, but he is still using Torterra."Ash said. "Use Flame Wheel!"
Chimchar spun towards Torterra to hit him with Flame Wheel.
"Stone Edge!"Paul ordered.
"Dodge it!"Ash ordered.
Chimchar immediately dodge the Stone Edge by changing the direction of the Flame Wheel.
"Change up!"Paul ordered.
Torterra made his Stone Edge move towards Chimchar was which shocked Ash.
"No way!"Lucas said in shock.
"Change direction?"Dawn asked.
"His ability to change Stone Edge is incredible!"Brock admitted.
Chimchar couldn't outrun the stones and therefore suffered a super-effective hit.
"Flamethrower, go!"Ash ordered.
Ash has Chimchar use Flamethrower, but Electabuzz's Light Screen protects Torterra.
"Aw man."Ash muttered bitterly.
"Light Screen half the damage from that Flamethrower, Chimchar has the advantage as a fire type but this is getting difficult."Brock said.
"True, but Torterra is also a Ground Type and has advantage on Chimchar too."Denise added.
"Torchic."Torchic tweeted.
"That's true, Denise."Reggie agreed. "On top of that, the danger of getting hit by Stone Edge. If Chimchar gets hit too close, leaving both Ash and Chimchar with precious few options."
"Chimchar, return!"Ash ordered and recalled Chimchar into his pokeball before taking out his next one. "Gliscor, take over!"
"Gli!"
"Of course, I know Torterra is protected by Light Screen but Torterra also took a lot of damage."Ash said. "I'll finish it off with one shot. X-Scissor!"
Gliscor activated X-Scissor and flew towards Torterra.
"Frenzy Plant!"Paul ordered.
Torterra uses Frenzy Plant, hitting Gliscor dead on and immediately taking it out of the battle.
"Gliscor!"Ash shouted.
"Pika!"Pikachu gasped.
"Gliscor is unable to battle!"Olivier announced. "The winner is Torterra!"
"Gliscor, return now!"Ash ordered and returned Gliscor in his pokeball. "Now you get a good rest. Thanks."
Ash looked at Torterra.
"Torterra was Paul's first pokemon."Ash thought. "Man, Torterra is strong."
Pikachu looked at Ash.
"Pika pika."Pikachu suggested.
"That's great, Pikachu. But electric type moves won't work."Ash reminded.
"Pikachu."Pikachu assured.
"Okay, then everything is on your speed and Iron Tail."Ash declared.
Pikachu rushed to the battlefield to face off against Torterra.
"I'm counting on ya!"Ash stated.
"Pika!"Pikachu answered firmly.
Paul suddenly recalled Torterra back in its pokeball.
"What?"Ash said in confusion. "Switching again?"
"Ursaring, stand by for battle!"Paul stated.
The pokeball opened and Ursaring appeared in the battlefield once again.
"Ursaring up again."Ash thought. "Paul's pokemon know what are they supposed to do and they're doing it down the ladder. So that's gotta be Paul's battling style."
"Pika Pikachu."Pikachu reminded.
"This is mine."Ash responded. "Pikachu, Quick Attack!"
Pikachu charged towards Ursaring using Quick Attack.
"Use Hammer Arm!"Paul ordered.
Pikachu hits with Quick Attack, but Ursaring's Hammer Arm knocks the wind out of Pikachu and sends him flying in the air, sending Dawn into a panic.
"Pikachu!"Dawn yelled out.
"Prinplup!"Prinplup chirped.
"Yes! Good one!"Ash remarked. "Now use Iron Tail!"
Despite the powerful blow, Pikachu recovered and his tail glowed white.
"Quick! Focus Blast!"Paul ordered.
Paul orders Ursaring to counter with Focus Blast, but to his surprise, Ursaring ends up with paralysis from Pikachu's Static Ability, keeping it from using any moves.
"Could that be..."Dawn started.
"Right."Brock replied with a nod. "Pikachu's Static Ability."
"Static can cause your opponent to become paralysed when direct physical contact."Reggie explained. "So it looks like Pikachu's got the upper hand."
Pikachu hits Ursaring with Iron Tail to score a clean hit, although he subsequently takes even more burn damage from Magmortar's Flame Body earlier in the battle.
"Yikes, Magmortar's burn is still there."Denise scoffed.
"Pikachu is going to become weak if Magmortar's Flame Body if he keeps battling."Lucas retorted.
Torchic and Riolu looked at each other with worried expressions.
Just then, Ursaring's eyes began to glow red which causes Paul to get a satisfied look on his face while Ash gets a concerned look on his.
"Finally."Paul said smugly.
"Look out."Reggie warned.
Pikachu looks up to see Ursaring glowing red and screaming with rage, its enhanced power pouring out.
"Now Hammer Arm!"Paul ordered.
Ursaring lifted up its arms as they glowed white.
"It's coming!"Ash shouted. "Thunderbolt, go!"
Pikachu hits Ursaring with a massive Thunderbolt.
The electric attack worked for a few seconds, but Ursaring powered through it and hits Pikachu with Hammer Arm hard enough to heave him into Lake Acuity, where after disappearing under the water, he lets out a huge burst of electricity.
"Pikachu!"Ash yelled out.
Ash runs into the lake worried sick for his partner and Ursaring lets out a loud battle cry.
"Pikachu..."Dawn said worriedly.
"Prinplup."Prinplup chirped.
"But why Ursaring is mad all the sudden?"Denise questioned.
"Ursaring's gut ability activated."Brock answered. "It's attack stat boosted when infected with paralysis and other status effects as well."
"I bet Paul was only waiting for that ability to get activated all along."Reggie responded.
Paul casts a glance towards the lake where Ash was looking.
Pikachu emerged from the water and slowly approached Ash.
"Pikachu, are you alright?"Ash asked.
"Pika-"Pikachu started.
Pikachu suddenly fainted into his trainer's arms because all of the damage he endured from Magmortar and Ursaring was just too much for him.
"Pikachu is unable to battle!"Olivier declared. "The winner is Ursaring!"
Ash headed out of the lake with Pikachu in his arms.
"You battled really hard, Pikachu."Ash assured. "Sit down and watch. I'll nail it this time."
Ash carried Pikachu to the side lines before looking at the screen which showed he had only Chimchar left.
"I got only one pokemon left while Paul still has got five."Ash thought and glanced at his rival. "Although Paul's pokemon has taken damage, but it's not over yet. We can still do this."
Ash took out his last pokeball as Pikachu looked at him in worry.
"It's all up to you, Chimchar!"Ash stated and threw out the pokeball.
The pokeball opened and Chimchar appeared in the battlefield.
"Chimchar!"
"It's going to be hard for Ash to beat all five of Paul's pokemon with just Chimchar."Brock commented.
"Chimchar, let's show them how powerful you can be!"Ash encouraged. "Use Flame Wheel!"
Chimchar spun and charged towards Flamethrower.
"Ursaring use Slash!"Paul ordered.
Chimchar uses Flame Wheel, but Ursaring knocks it back with Slash.
"Chimchar, Flamethrower!"Ash ordered.
Chimchar hits Ursaring with Flamethrower, which scores a direct hit.
"Now use Dig!"Ash ordered.
Chimchar dug into the ground.
"Use Hammer Arm on the ground!"Paul ordered.
Chimchar uses Hammer Arm on the ground like before, but this time, Chimchar emerged from the ground before Ursaring can pull it off and causes it even more damage.
"Keep it up!"Ash encouraged. "Use Flamethrower!"
Chimchar uses another Flamethrower, which hits Ursaring dead-on and finally brings it down.
"Ursaring is unable to battle!"Olivier announced. "The winner is Chimchar!"
"Chimchar, you were awesome!"Ash remarked.
Chimchar happily danced with joy for his victory.
Paul returned Ursaring back in its pokeball as Ash let out a sigh and smiled at Chimchar.
"Thanks Chimchar, you rocked."Ash thanked.
"Chimchar."Chimchar responded.
"So let's keep this going."Ash encouraged. "Let's turn it around."
Chimchar nodded his head in agreement and then started to evolve causing everyone to become surprised.
"Chimchar is evolving!"Brock responded.
Everyone watched in amazement as Chimchar undergoes the evolution and becomes Monferno.
"Monferno!"Monferno shouted.
"That's great!"Ash commented with a smile. "You've evolved into Monferno!"
"Monferno."Monferno sneered with a thumbs up.
"Cool, Chimchar evolved."Lucas chuckled.
"He finally did."Denise remarked.
Riolu let out a small respond as Torchic happily tweeted.
"Amazing, Chimchar has answered Ash's call and gain new power in order to rise to the challenge."Reggie exclaimed. "The trust between Ash and his pokemon is demonstrated right before our eyes."
Monferno started rapidly swinging his fists which start glowing before swinging one and sent a gust of wind at Paul, who stood unflinching by the sudden move.
"Wow! Monferno, you learned Mach Punch!"Ash complemented. "That's a brand new move!"
Monferno happily jumped a little bit.
"Electabuzz, stand by for battle!"Paul ordered.
Paul sends out Electabuzz, who was initially surprised to see Chimchar has evolved, but was still more than ready to battle its former teammate.
"Chimchar wasn't really compatible with Paul's training style, but with Ash's training style is a perfect fit."Reggie explained. "Simple as that. Just as some pokemon's compatibility there can be the same issues in pokemon and trainer. That makes Chimchar's evolution a great example. Its not a matter of right and wrong. This battle has both Ash and Paul's pride on the line. That's why this battle will both trainers and pokemon stronger in the long run."
"Hey that's you wanted a full battle."Brock said in realisation.
Reggie nodded in agreement.
"Alright, Monferno use Mach Punch!"Ash ordered.
Monferno speeds towards Electabuzz and socks it square in the gut, sending it hurtling back and smashing into a rock.
"Alright!"Ash remarked.
"Pika!"Pikachu said with a smile.
"Monferno is super fast, Prinplup!"Dawn said happily.
"Prinplup."Prinplup chirped.
"Thunder!"Paul ordered.
Electabuzz fires Thunder, which hits Monferno and makes it scream in pain.
"Monferno, hang in there!"Ash protested. "Use Flame Wheel!"
Monferno charged towards Electabuzz using Flame Wheel.
"Use Protect!"Paul ordered.
Electabuzz uses Protect, sending Monferno flying back.
"Now Flamethrower from up there!"Ash ordered.
"Thunder Punch, quick!"Paul ordered.
Monferno tried to attack with Flamethrower, but Electabuzz dodged and goes in for a Thunder Punch.
Monferno dodges the Electabuzz's attack in mid-air.
"Monferno, Dig!"Ash ordered.
Monferno tunnels underground and hits Electabuzz when resurfaced from the ground.
"Use Flame Wheel!"Ash ordered.
Monferno spun forward as he activated Flame Wheel.
"Thunder!"Paul ordered.
Electabuzz fired Thunder towards Monferno.
"Monferno use Flamethrower!"Ash ordered.
Monferno use Counter Shield with Flamethrower, and as a result, the Thunder is deflected, allowing Flame Wheel to score a direct hit.
"Keep it up, Monferno!"Ash encouraged.
"Pika!"Pikachu cheered.
"All Paul can do right now is defence."Reggie commented.
"Your right."Brock agreed.
"Ash has got his momentum back because of Monferno's unbelievable speed."Dawn remarked.
"But let's hope it can last."Lucas reminded.
A worried look appeared on Denise's face since she knew the results were going to be.
"Monferno, Mach Punch! Go!"Ash ordered.
"Protect!"Paul ordered.
Monferno launched himself forward to use Mach Punch, but Electabuzz uses Protect which causes Monferno's move to fail.
"Thunder!"Paul ordered.
Monferno got hit by Electabuzz's Thunder.
"Monferno!"Ash shouted. "No!"
"Quickly switching gears between Protect and Attack shows how impressive Paul's Electabuzz is."Brock admitted.
"Monferno! Hang in there!"Ash instructed. "Use Flamethrower!"
Monferno tried to attack, but couldn't since he got paralyzed by Thunder.
"I knew it!"Ash scowled. "It's paralysed!"
"Thunder does paralyse the opponent if the user uses that attack twice."Lucas complemented.
"Oh boy..."Denise said nervously.
Knowing Monferno is at his limit, Paul and Electabuzz smile in confidence.
But the former's expression turned into a surprised one when Monferno's tail flame starts to burn more fiercely.
"Oh no!"Dawn gasped. "Is that Blaze?"
"Thats Monferno's determination not to be beaten manifesting in his flame."Reggie answered.
"That's Monferno!"Ash laughed. "We are not giving up no matter what! Alright Monferno, Mach Punch!"
Monferno ran towards Electabuzz to hit it with Mach Punch.
"Electabuzz, Thunder Punch!"Paul ordered.
Electabuzz ran toward Monferno to use Thunder Punch.
The two Pokemon run towards each other full of fury and both attacks connect at the same time, causing a massive explosion in the middle of the battlefield.
When the smoke clears, Monferno and Electabuzz stare each other down for a few seconds.
While Electabuzz was very weak, it smiles, knowing Monferno has taken far more damage; it is proven right as Monferno collapses to the ground, badly injured, to Ash's horror.
"MONFERNO!"Ash yelled out.
Monferno lied on the ground, unable to battle anymore.
"Monferno is unable to battle and the winner is Electabuzz!"Olivier announced and moved his hand to Paul's side. "Which means that the victor is Paul!"
"Oh no..."Dawn said quietly.
"Prinplup."Prinplup chirped.
Paul had won the match while Ash had suffered his worst loss ever.
Afterwards...
The sun started to set on Lake Acuity as Paul returns Electabuzz to its pokeball and Ash cradled Monferno in his arms, telling him that he did a great job.
"Monferno, thank you."Ash thanked with a small smile.
Monferno looked at Ash with a weak smile.
Reggie, Olivier, Denise, Lucas, Brock and Dawn walked up to Paul.
"That was a spectacular battle you two."Reggie stated. "Many thanks."
"Yeah."Paul agreed with a smile. "It sure was."
Denise stared at Paul with a surprised expression to see him actually smiling for the first time.
Ash looked down and gritted his teeth a little, but didn't say anything.
"It's been a while since I saw that look on your face."Reggie commented.
"I'll sent you my pokemon."Paul stated.
Reggie nodded. "Got it, Paul."
Paul looks at Olivier and bowed at him before he started to walk away.
Denise glanced at Ash seeing him almost in tears and looked devastated by this landslide defeat knowing he was far outclassed by his rival.
"Ash..."Denise said sadly.
"Torchic."Torchic sighed.
Torchic closed his eyes, feeling sad as well that Ash lost even though Chimchar evolved during the event.
