Chapter 145: Mastering Current Events!
In a Forest…
Ash, Dawn, Denise and Brock were walking to head to Daybreak Town, but soon found themselves lost on a route.
"Aw man, I think we're lost."Ash exclaimed.
"How big is this forest anyway?"Dawn asked.
"I don't know, sis."Denise answered while looking around. "But I have no doubt that we are lost."
Brock took out his Pokegear to check which he and his companions should go.
"Heading over this way, should get us out of here fast."Brock stated.
"Gliscor!"Ash called out and threw out his pokeball. "I choose you!"
Ash sends out Gliscor to check out the surrounding area.
"Gliscor!"
"Gliscor, have a look."Ash ordered.
Gliscor flew up in the sky to lead the group out of the forest before the Fang Scorpion Pokemon called out to his trainer and companions.
"Gliscor!"Gliscor called out. "Gliscor!"
The group followed Gliscor's call, only to come out of the forest and see many cliffs below them.
"Check it out."Denise complemented. "There are so many cliffs."
"Hey!"Ash said. "It's a Scizor!"
The group then saw Gliscor being chased by a Scizor in the sky.
"Up there!"Brock commented.
The heroes then saw a Chimecho show up and start chasing Gliscor with the Scizor.
"It's a Chimecho!"Dawn stated.
The Chimecho and the Scizor started battling in full speed.
"Whoa!"Denise responded in surprise. "They're fast!"
Scizor flew forward as his claws started glowing.
"Look!"Brock said. "Scizor is using Metal Claw!"
Chimecho's body then became outlined in light blue before its mouth released multiple light blue rings to attack Scizor.
"And Chimecho is using Psywave fast!"Ash added.
Chimecho's Psywave clashed with Scizor's Metal Claw, sending the Pincer Pokemon back.
Scizor recovered before its claws started glowing purple as Gliscor and the group continued watching the battle.
"Now it's Double Hit!"Denise exclaimed.
Scizor hits Chimecho with Double Hit causing the Wind Chime Pokemon to be thrown back.
Gliscor, Pikachu and Combusken quickly moved out of the way causing Chimecho to crash into Prinplup, knocking both Pokémon out.
"Prinplup!"Dawn gasped in shock.
"Prinplup..."Prinplup chirped in pain.
Dawn quickly checked on Prinplup as Chimecho's Trainer, Maya, soared down in her air balloon.
"Sorry."Maya apologised. "I never got people or pokemon would be way out here like this."
Maya went off her air balloon to check on her Chimecho.
"Chimecho, are you alright?"Maya asked.
Chimecho flew up from the ground and smiled at its trainer.
"Chimecho."Chimecho answered gently.
Dawn took out her pokedex to scan Chimecho.
"Chimecho the Wind Chime Pokémon."Dawn's Pokedex buzzed. "Its cries, which reverberate in its hollow body, emerge as notes of beauty, which drive off its opponents."
"Oh and its the evolved form of Chingling."Denise remarked, looking at her twin sister's pokedex. "So cute."
The group then saw Maya's grandfather, McCann come down with his Scizor.
"Well I be."McCann responded. "I'm shocked to find sign of life in this big forest."
"Excuse me."Ash spoke up. "It's that your Scizor?"
Denise's eyes widen a bit as she quickly realised Maya's grandfather.
"Wait a minute, I remembered seeing you in Sinnoh Now."Denise declared with a smile. "You're that Air Battle Master known as McCann, right?"
"That's right, young lady."McCann agreed, giving a nod.
"I thought you looked familiar."Dawn commented. "You appeared in TV."
"Air Battle Master?"Ash said in surprise.
"That's right."Maya remarked. "When it comes to air battle, my grandfather McCann is undefeated and unbeatable. But now that his retired, he lives a quiet life up on the mountains near here. Sometimes, he even lets me battle him."
"I see."Brock complemented. "So that's what that Air Battle was all about."
McCann lightly nodded before pointing at the cliffs with his stick.
"Now the thing is; the way the wind blows around here makes this valley quite unique."McCann declared. "It's about perfect for air battles as you're going to get."
"Every so often, someone asks grandfather how to teach them everything he knows."Maya admitted. "So many want to learn every last one of his secrets. Just yesterday, a student asked to make his Crobat stronger."
"So did you help him out?"Dawn asked.
"Nah."McCann replied, moving his hand a bit. "I've decided to give him a chance."
"Right."Maya agreed. "See most people don't have a chance. But even if they can't become students, they bring their pokemon to be trained. Am I right, grandpa?"
"Yes, dear."McCann answered.
"So, most requests turns out right from the start."Maya explained.
"I figure there's no chance for them to become strong and it's a waste of my time."McCann stated.
"Gliscor!"Gliscor spoke up.
"Gliscor, do you wanna try?"Ash questioned with a smile.
"Gliscor, gliscor."Gliscor answered.
Ash looked at the old Air Battle Master.
"Mr McCann, would you consider battling my Gliscor, please?"Ash asked. "You see, we're on a journey together to win the Sinnoh League."
"Are you saying your Gliscor is strong?"McCann said.
"Yeah."Ash agreed confidently. "Gliscor is a huge help in my gym battles."
"Well."McCann spoke up, looking at his granddaughter. "I wonder about that."
"It would be great for Gliscor to test out his abilities, Mr McCann."Denise agreed.
"Please, say yes."Dawn insisted.
"It sure would."Brock added.
Pikachu, Prinplup and Combusken all responded in agreement.
"Pika pika."Pikachu replied.
"Prinplup."Prinplup chirped.
"Combusken."Combusken responded.
"Why not?"Maya asked. "Since you retired, there's not much to do."
"Perhaps, it might be a nice way to kill some time."McCann admitted.
Ash, Denise, Dawn and Brock sweat dropped at McCann's words while Gliscor frowned a bit.
"Kill some time?"Ash repeated.
"Scizor, let's go."McCann ordered.
McCann pressed the button of his pokeball and Scizor appeared next to him.
"Scizor!"
Denise took out her Pokedex to scan Scizor.
"Scizor the Pincer Pokémon."Denise's Pokedex buzzed. "It threatens enemies with its eye-patterned claws, which can swing with tremendous force when used in battle."
"Whoa."Denise chuckled in curiosity. "It sounds strong."
Ash nodded. "Yeah."
In the Sky…
McCann decided to have one-on-one fight with Ash's Gliscor against his Scizor, but the match was going to be an Air Battle.
Ash and his friends were in the air balloon. on the right while McCann and his granddaughter were on the one on the left.
"Alright then, shall we begin?"McCann asked.
"You bet!"Ash remarked.
"Let's go!"McCann declared.
Scizor took off in the sky with a whip of the air lifting up higher.
"You go too!"Ash encouraged.
Gliscor took off in the sky as well to start his battle against Scizor.
The opponents get into their starting positions while riding the winds and the Air Battle begins.
"You go get Scizor!"Ash ordered.
Scizor flew past a cliff while Gliscor ends up bumping into it causing Denise and Combusken to wince at the sight.
"Come on, Gliscor!"Ash called out. "You know you can't turn with that speed!"
"Gliscor, you gotta wake up!"Dawn protested.
Gliscor opened his eyes and removed himself from the cliff to go after Scizor.
"Now use Steel Wing!"Ash ordered.
The Fang Scorpion pokemon rides the wind and goes to use Steel Wing, but Scizor flew faster to dodge the attack.
"Scizor use Metal Claw!"McCann ordered.
Scizor activated Metal Claw and directly hits Gliscor.
"Amazing."Brock complemented. "Scizor doesn't waste a single move."
"It's obvious that Mr McCann has trained it very well."Denise stated.
Ash gritted his teeth a bit before calling out Gliscor's next move.
"Come on, Gliscor!"Ash shouted. "Fly up the wind!"
Gliscor rode on a wind wave and regained stability as Scizor flew behind him.
"Now Double Hit!"McCann ordered.
Scizor's claws glowed purple and Gliscor gets wounded by its' Double Hit, stunning Ash and Pikachu.
"It's predicting all of Gliscor's moves!"Brock stated.
A wind wave brings Gliscor on a cliff as Scizor stood behind him.
"Quick, Gliscor!"Ash ordered. "Use Sand Attack!"
"Wait!"Denise protested. "Don't-"
Gliscor stood up and used Sand Attack, but the wind sweeps the sand away.
"Now Scizor use Metal Claw!"McCann ordered.
Scizor flew forward and hits Gliscor with Metal Claw, sending the Ground/Flying type back.
"Double Hit, go!"McCann ordered.
The Pincer Pokemon activated Double Hit and crashed Gliscor into a cliff.
"Gliscor!"Ash shouted.
"That Scizor is amazingly tough."Dawn admitted.
"Scizor really uses the wind as its advantage."Brock declared.
Denise didn't say anything as she continued watching the battle.
Gliscor removed himself from the cliff and took off in the sky again.
"Now Gliscor, Fire Fang, go!"Ash ordered.
Gliscor opened his mouth as his fangs caught fire.
"Quick Scizor, Double Team!"McCann ordered.
Scizor releases clone copies of itself to confuse Gliscor
Gliscor used Fire Fang and banished Scizor's illusion of Double Team.
"Gliscor use Steel Wing!"Ash ordered.
Gliscor used Steel Wing, but Scizor swiftly dodged it by riding the wind.
"No good."Ash muttered.
"It seems like Scizor has come up with some sort way to dance with the wind."Dawn admitted.
"Scizor has an Air Master for its trainer, sis."Denise remarked. "If it didn't, it wouldn't be able to know how to dodge the cliffs and fly so quickly to attack its opponent."
Gliscor continued flying in the sky as Scizor chased after him from behind.
Maya notice her grandfather wasn't calling out Scizor's next attack.
"Grandpa, shouldn't you wrap this up soon?"Maya asked.
"I suppose no sense in wasting anymore of my time."McCann declared and gave Scizor its next attack. "Scizor, Hyper Beam! Let's go!"
Scizor puts its claws together and hits directly Gliscor with a Hyper Beam.
"Gliscor!"Ash shouted and realised the Pincer Pokemon will be in a momentary delay after using Hyper Beam. "Wait! If they used Hyper Beam, then they won't be able to attack us right away! Gliscor, wake up and use Fire Fang!"
Gliscor opened his eyes and came back up to hit Scizor with a Fire Fang.
However, Scizor used the currents to climb higher thus avoiding any possible counterattacks while it recharged from using Hyper Beam.
This caused the heroes to become stunned at what they were seeing.
"Oh no!"Brock declared. "As soon as Scizor used Hyper Beam, it climbed to a safe distance from Gliscor by riding wind!"
"Alright, Scizor!"McCann called out. "Now steep dive and then use Double Hit!"
Scizor comes down on Gliscor with a steep dive and knocked him out with a Double Hit.
"Gliscor!"Ash shouted.
With the battle over, the two air balloons landed back down on the ground and the heroes rushed forward to check if the Fang Scorpion Pokemon was alright.
"Gliscor."Ash said, bending down to his Ground/Flying type pokemon. "Are you okay?"
Gliscor slowly opened his eyes after his trainer's voice.
"That was tough."Brock declared.
"Yeah."Ash agreed. "Poor Gliscor wasn't even able to give a single hit."
Gliscor began to tear up, feeling terrible and ashamed that he did so poorly in the Air Battle.
"Hey."Ash said with a warm smile. "Don't cry, Gliscor."
McCann and Maya walked up to the heroes.
"You're Gliscor is kind of a weakling."Maya declared.
"Too bad."McCann stated. "There's better way to kill some time."
"His right."Maya responded, agreeing with her grandfather.
"Look kid."McCann exclaimed. "If you want your Gliscor to become strong, it's going to take a lot of effort."
Ash gritted his teeth and looked down at the Air Master's words.
"So, let me teach him the ways of air battling."McCann suggested.
"Huh?"Ash said in confusion.
"The key to air battling is reading the wind."McCann stated, pointing at the sky with his staff.
"Reading the wind?"Ash repeated.
"Right."McCann agreed. "You need to know what wind is blowing where, where the wind is subsiding and where the wind has gotten stronger. And where the wind is binding which way. That is called reading the wind."
"Wow."Ash said in surprise. "Reading the wind, huh?"
"A Pokemon learns to read it with its entire body."McCann declared. "The wind never blows the same way twice; sunny days and rainy days. Each day brings different curves. And since they're always changing, learning how to read them is the secret in winning an air battle."
Everyone watched as the wind in different ways around the cliffs.
"That's amazing."Ash murmured.
"Isn't that what makes it interesting, Maya?"McCann asked.
"That's right, grandpa."Maya agreed.
McCann brought his attention on the heroes.
"The sun is going down; we've got a lovely guest house and you're welcome to stay there."McCann remarked.
Afterwards…
Ash, Dawn, Denise and Brock were eating lunch at the guest house as Pikachu, Prinplup and Combusken ate from their bowls.
However, Gliscor wasn't eating since he was still upset from losing match against McCann's Scizor.
"Gliscor."Ash said, noticing his pokemon's sad expression. "Not much of an appetite, huh?"
"You've got to eat, if you wanna get stronger."Dawn reminded.
Pikachu, Prinplup and Combusken agreed while eating their pokemon food.
Gliscor sighed sadly while slowing eating his pieces of food from his bowl.
When it was night time, the heroes prepared themselves to go to bed.
"Okay, Gliscor."Ash declared, holding out his pokeball. "Return."
Gliscor scoffed and glanced away from his pokeball.
"But Gliscor, you gotta get some rest."Ash reminded.
"Guess Gliscor has a lot to think about."Brock admitted.
"That's true."Denise agreed. "It's obvious that Gliscor's not impress over the way it battled today."
"Guess so."Ash answered.
Later that night, the heroes put off the light and went to sleep after saying goodnight to each other.
Pikachu wakes up and goes out where Gliscor was gazing at the moon.
The Mouse Pokemon tried to cheer his friend up while Ash also shows up, admitting he couldn't sleep as he was still feeling bad about his loss.
"Gliscor."Ash spoke up. "Too upset to sleep, huh?"
"Scor."Gliscor agreed with a sad expression.
"Hey, what do you say we do some night time training to read the wind just like McCann say.
"Gliscor!"Gliscor agreed with a confident smile.
"That's the spirit!"Ash remarked and took out a pokeball. "Staraptor, I choose you!"
The pokeball opened and Staraptor appeared in the sky.
"Staraptor!"
Staraptor then helped Ash and Gliscor as he used a piece of ribbon tied to him for the Ground/Flying type to navigate through the wind.
"Gliscor! That's it!"Ash encouraged. "Just keep chasing after the rope!"
Gliscor followed the wind pattern as Staraptor flew forward in sky.
Then Denise showed up holding a paper bag with Combusken at her side.
"Here, Ash."Denise replied. "Try using this."
"Dennie?"Ash said in surprise.
"I took a bit of tin foil and used it to make confetti."Denise explained as she open the paper bag to show the confetti inside it. "Watch this!"
Denise threw some confetti in the air and got blown away from the wind, making it look like a shooting star.
"Wow! It's like you can see the wind!"Ash chuckled and then called out to Gliscor. "Okay, Gliscor! Follow that trail!"
Gliscor followed after the confetti as Denise handed Ash the paper bag.
"Thanks a lot, Dennie."Ash thanked.
Denise smiled and her cheeks turned a bit red.
"What are friends for."Denise answered kindly.
"Gliscor, look down!"Ash called out and threw more confetti. "Here's more!"
Ash threw more confetti in the air causing Gliscor to follow after it.
"It's working!"Ash stated proudly. "Gliscor is riding the wind!"
"Pika!"Pikachu cheered.
"Combusken."Combusken remarked.
Team Rocket flew in the balloon and got the fake confetti onto their faces.
"What's with the sparkles?!"Meowth demanded.
"Looks like tin foil."James commented.
"For what?"Jessie questioned.
"That!"Meowth declared.
Team Rocket then got knocked out by Gliscor, who was following the tin foil trail.
"This Gliscor is from the twerps."Meowth explained. "What are you doing in a night like this?"
"Gliscor gliscor."Gliscor explained.
"Translation."Jessie insisted.
"Gliscor is trying to learn how to read the wind, so it can battle Scizor for the wind."Meowth translated.
"I see not."James replied.
Ash, Denise, Pikachu and Combusken became alarmed seeing Team Rocket's balloon coming their way.
"Team Rocket!"Ash and Denise shouted in unison.
Team Rocket began reciting their motto.
"Listen. Are those twerps I hear?"
"They're snoopy without a second gear."
"On the Wind!"
The wind started blowing on Team Rocket's balloon and began to be swept away causing Gliscor to fly away from them.
"Past the stars!"
"In your ear!"
"On the left!"
"On the right!"
"WE'RE TEAM ROCKET AND WE'RE IN YOUR FACE!"Team Rocket screamed and got blasted off in the night sky by the wind.
"What were they doing in the middle of the night?"Ash asked.
"Probably trying to mess things up as usual."Denise suggested. "Luckily, the wind prevented that from happening."
Ash then proceeds throwing more confetti to help Gliscor his flying and understand the wind more.
The sun began to rise for a new day as the Fang Scorpion Pokemon continued to follow the tin foil.
"Gliscor, way da go!"Ash remarked proudly.
"His really getting the hang of it now."Denise stated with a smile.
"You're right."Ash agreed. "And after we get some sleep, we'll take on McCann one more time."
The Following Morning...
Denise informed McCann that she and Ash have been training all night, trying to read the wind.
"Really?"McCann said in surprise. "You want an air battle with me again?"
"Even though Gliscor wasn't able to land a single hit before?"Maya questioned.
Ash and Gliscor both closed their eyes and bowed their heads.
"Yes, we do."Ash answered. "We're asking for another chance, please."
"Pika."Pikachu responded.
"Combusken."Combusken chirped.
"Please, Mr McCann."Denise insisted. "Ash and Gliscor have worked really hard all night long learning to read the wind."
"They seem to get it now."Dawn assured.
Brock nodded in agreement.
"Course, we might not be able to beat Scizor after all of this, but still."Ash explained. "We really wanna check how far we've come, and look at Gliscor's progress."
"Gli!"Gliscor sneered with a determined look.
McCann thinks about Ash's offer as he looked at Maya to ask if he should accept.
"Dear, what should I do?"McCann asked with an unsure look.
"Well, there's always more time to kill, so why not?"Maya remarked.
A moment later, Ash's Gliscor and McCann's Scizor were prepared for their rematch.
"All right, then."McCann announced. "Ready to go?"
"Yeah."Ash replied.
"Do it, Gliscor!"Dawn encouraged. "Good luck!"
"We believe in you!"Denise assured.
Pikachu, Prinplup and Combusken all cheered at Gliscor to show their support.
"Pika, Pika!"Pikachu said.
"Prinplup!"Prinplup chirped.
"Combusken!"Combusken called out.
The battle begins and Scizor flew around using the currents.
"Gliscor use X-Scissor!"Ash ordered.
Gliscor successfully followed Scizor but didn't hit a cliff this time.
"Way da go, Gliscor!"Ash remarked. "Use X-Scissor!"
Gliscor tried to hit Scizor with an X-Scissor, but wasn't able to.
Ash gritted his teeth at the sight, knowing Scizor was still fast for Gliscor.
"Scizor is so fast!"Dawn complemented. "Amazing!"
"Metal Claw!"McCann ordered.
Scizor comes behind Gliscor trying to land a Metal Claw which the Ground/Flying type was able to dodge.
"Oh, so Gliscor can dodge now."McCann said with a hint of surprise. "Scizor, Double Hit! Let's go!"
Gliscor used the currents to climb but Scizor manages to land a hit on it.
"Gliscor, get back up!"Ash ordered.
"Remember your training!"Denise protested.
Gliscor opened his eyes as he flew down the cliff.
"Sand Attack!"Ash ordered.
Gliscor quickly countered with a Sand Attack landing a hit on his opponent.
"That was awesome!"Ash exclaimed. "Gliscor use Fire Fang now!"
Gliscor then directly hits Scizor with a Fire Fang.
"Not too bad."McCann admitted. "Scizor, Double Hit once more!"
Scizor hits Gliscor back with a Double Hit.
"Come on, Gliscor!"Ash encouraged. "You gotta dig down deep! Fire Fang, go!"
Gliscor activated Fire Fang as McCann called out Scizor's next attack.
"Use Double Team!"McCann ordered.
"Good job, Gliscor!"Denise chuckled.
The Fang Scorpion pokemon then flew up the sky with Scizor.
"Here we go!"Ash announced. "Gliscor do it!"
Gliscor rides an air current upwards before making a speedy descent which builds into a new move, Giga Impact.
"What's that?!"Ash said in surprise.
Gliscor hits Scizor with Giga Impact.
"That was Giga Impact!"Brock declared.
"Gliscor learned Giga Impact!"Ash remarked.
"That's great!"Denise laughed.
"Scizor!"McCann called out. "Now that Gliscor has learned Giga Impact, it won't be able to learn a new move for a while! Counter attack quick!"
Using McCann's own tactic, Ash had Gliscor ride the winds to keep away from his opponent as he recharged.
"Yes!"Brock said in approval. "After using Giga Impact, keep Gliscor away from Scizor using the wind!"
"That's the exact same combination of McCann had Scizor use!"Dawn admitted.
"Gliscor, way da go!"Ash stated happily.
"Gliscor has become pretty good."Maya complemented.
"Yes, but play time is all over now."McCann replied.
Scizor flew toward Gliscor. causing the Ground/Flying type to return with added momentum, effectively blocking Scizor's next move.
"Here it comes!"Ash warned. "X-Scissor!"
"Use Metal Claw!"McCann ordered.
Gliscor proceeded to use X-Scissor, but Scizor's Metal Claw lands first.
"Hang in there, Gliscor!"Ash encouraged. "Use Giga Impact!"
Gliscor flew ahead to hit Scizor.
"Hyper Beam!"McCann ordered.
Gliscor tried to use Giga Impact, but Scizor hits him with a Hyper Beam before Gliscor was able to react.
After an intense shot from Scizor's attack, Gliscor plummeted to the ground, losing for a second time.
"Gliscor!"Ash yelled out.
"No..."Denise said sadly.
With the second match over, Ash goes over to Gliscor to tell him his proud of him even though they lost again.
"Gliscor, you okay?"Ash asked.
"Gli..."Gliscor answered in shame.
"So we lost again."Ash admitted.
"Gli."Gliscor sighed.
"But not only did you learn how to read the wind, you learned a brand-new move, too."Ash declared proudly. "And that's really good, you know?"
Gliscor smiled. "Gli."
"Sure is, it's great!"Dawn chuckled.
"You've done way better in the rematch!"Denise remarked.
"That's real progress."Brock commented.
"Pika, Pika!"Pikachu agreed.
"Prinplup prinplup."Prinplup chirped.
Combusken nodded. "Combusken."
"Yeah, that performance really wasn't bad at all."Maya stated.
"Indeed."McCann answered. "Tell me, Ash. How would you like to leave Gliscor with me for a little training?"
"Leave Gliscor here?"Ash said in surprise.
"If your Gliscor was able to read the wind that well in just one night, there's a making of a great pupil here."McCann explained.
An astonished look grew on Ash's face.
"Whoa, I don't know what to say."Ash responded.
"It's quite amazing how this reminds me of the very first time I met Scizor."McCann admitted. "It's been a long time since I've met a Pokémon I wanted to train."
"Gliscor?"Gliscor said in shock and stared at the ground, thinking. "Gli..."
Suddenly faced with the possibility of separating from Ash, Gliscor recalls its time traveling with Ash.
"Gliscor, do you wanna come with us or do you wanna stay with McCann to train?"Ash asked. "It's totallu up to you."
Gliscor gets teary for a few seconds, but then shakes them away and walks to McCann, indicating it wishes to train.
"Got it."Ash assured.
"Ash..."Brock started.
"It's fine."Ash remarked and smiled at Gliscor. "If that's what you decided, that's that."
"Well, what do you know."Brock said. "Gliscor decided to stay and train with McCann."
"Gliscor has grown a lot."Dawn remarked.
"More better than when he was a Gligar."Denise agreed.
"The truth is both trainer and pokemon desire to become stronger."McCann declared.
"In that case, McCann."Ash said, taking out Gliscor's pokeball to give to the Air Master. "Please take good care of my Gliscor."
"Thanks."McCann thanked.
"You just leave it all up to my grandpa."Maya insisted. "He will do well training Gliscor."
The group later say their farewells to Gliscor as Ash tells the Fang Scorp Pokemon that he was certain they'll meet again.
"Good luck with your training, Gliscor."Dawn declared.
"Work hard."Denise instructed.
"And be well."Brock added.
Pikachu, Prinplup and Combusken all responded in agreemnt.
"Gliscor, I'll be sure to see you again real soon."Ash vowed with a wink.
"Gliscor."Gliscor agreed.
"Now all of you take care of yourselves."McCann ordered.
