Chapter 149: Short And To The Punch!
Dawn, Denise, Brock and Pikachu rested in the ground while Prinplup and Vaporeon were swimming in the cool refreshing river.
While everyone relaxed by the waterfall, Ash tried training his Gible in order to master Draco Meteor.
"Alright, Gible!"Ash remarked. "While we practice Draco Meteor, you need to concentrate and focus on your dragon pokemon power."
"Gible."Gible said with a nod.
"Now concentrate that power in your sensor and fire!"Ash encouraged.
Gible's body then glows orange and it shoots an orange ball of light into the sky.
"Looking good!"Ash remarked.
However, Gible's Draco Meteor failed again causing Denise to become alarmed.
"Incoming!"Denise warned.
Vaporeon quickly dives into the river and the meteor again hits Prinplup, knocking him out.
"Prinplup!"Dawn gasped. "No!"
"Prinplup."Prinplup muttered in pain.
Vaporeon brings the knocked out penguin pokemon next to Dawn, Pikachu and Denise.
"You know Prinplup or Combusken are always on the wrong place in the wrong time."Brock complemented.
"Good thing I didn't bring Combusken out this time though."Denise said with a sheepish smile.
Denise picked up Vaporeon as Dawn looked at Ash.
"Ash, be careful, please."Dawn reminded.
"Sorry about that."Ash apologised and looked at Gible. "Gible, get the next one right. Okay?"
Ash calls for another try, but Gible then starts chomping a rock and due to his habit, he falls into the water.
"Gible!"Ash shouted and threw out a pokeball. "Buizel! Quick! I choose you!"
The pokeball opened causing Buizel to come out and land into the water.
"Alright, Buizel!"Ash commented. "Go into the water and save Gible!"
Buizel saluted. "Bui bui!"
The Sea Weasel Pokemon dived into the water and rescued Gible from drowning.
"Buizel, thanks!"Ash thanked and took out Gible's pokeball. "Gible, return!"
Ash returns Gible back inside his pokeball.
After the successful rescue, two shadowy figures emerged from the waterfall causing the group to become alarmed.
The figures that leaped through the waterfall were a stern-looking Black Belt by the name of Clayton and his Mr. Mime.
"Whoa."Ash said. "Check them out."
Dawn notice Mr. Mime next to Clayton.
"Whose that pokemon?"Dawn asked.
Dawn took out her Pokédex to scan Mr. Mime.
"Mr. Mime, the Barrier Pokémon."Dawn's Pokédex buzzed. "By rapidly moving its fingers, Mr. Mime can stop air molecules to create an invisible wall."
"I'm a trainer named Clayton!"Clayton declared. "I'm also the man with the supplied fists! They call me 'Clayton Sub-Fists'!"
"His kidding."Brock responded, raising an eyebrow.
"Clayton Sub-Fists?"Ash said in confusion.
"That's a weird name."Denise complemented.
"And this my pokemon!"Clayton admitted, gesturing to Mr. Mime. "In short, my po, Mr. Mime!"
Brock, Ash, Dawn, Denise, Pikachu, Prinplup, Buizel and Vaporeon continued looking at Clayton with unfazed expressions.
"He's weird."Dawn stated.
"Prinplup."Prinplup chirped.
"Now for you!"Clayton commented and pointed at the heroes. "You all look like Pokemon Trainers! Poke-ners in short!"
Denise sweat dropped. "Huh?"
"Poke-ners, right."Dawn said with an unsure expression.
"I would like to know where those previsions come from."Brock responded sheepishly.
"Alright!"Clayton replied. "Tell me your names!"
"My name is Ash."Ash responded. "And these are my pokemon; Pikachu and Buizel."
"Pika!"Pikachu said.
"Bui!"Buizel answered.
"My name is Dawn and I'd like you to meet my partner, Prinplup."Dawn remarked.
"Prinplup."Prinplup chirped.
"I'm Dawn's new sister, Denise."Denise responded as she held Vaporeon. "And this is my pokemon, Vaporeon."
Vaporeon smiled. "Vaporeon."
"Hello, I'm Brock."Brock added. "And I'm a Pokemon Breeder."
"I get it!"Clayton answered and started giving the heroes' nicknames. "AshPika! AshBui! DawnPrin! DenVap! BroBre! Got it! Nice to meet you all!"
"Uh, likewise."Brock answered.
"Nice to meet you."Dawn said with a nervous smile.
"Yeah."Denise grumbled.
"You see I'm a Pokemon Martial artist."Clayton declared. "Mr. Mime and me have been training for many years and this is my personal training field."
"A trainer and a martial artist!"Ash stated in an excited tone.
"Pika pika!"Pikachu said happily.
"That's right."Clayton agreed. "A Pokemon battle is worth skills and wills that come! For years I have travelled the world and learn Pokemon martial arts skills. After arriving here, I chose this lake because it is a perfect place to train and gain the highest of skill levels. So, I've been training right here ever since."
"I'm impressed."Dawn responded.
"So am I."Denise agreed bluntly.
"I'm thinking."Brock admitted.
"By the way! You, Buizel!"Clayton shouted, pointing at the Weasel Pokemon. "That heroic rescue was inspiring!"
"Hero rescue?"Brock said in confusion. "That's over the top!"
"You got potential and so..."Clayton started before he and Mr. Mime jumped down to land in front of the heroes. "I want to see how powerful you are! Would you like to battle against my Mr. Mime?"
"Bui bui!"Buizel answered with a confident expression.
"Yeah!"Ash sneered. "We'll show you alright!"
"Over here!"Clayton instructed.
Clayton and Mr. Mime rushed ahead causing Ash and Buizel to follow after them.
"Let's go!"Ash insisted.
Buizel nodded. "Bui bui!"
Dawn, Denise, Brock, Prinplup and Vaporeon followed after their two companions to see the upcoming battle.
The group arrived to a grassy field which was where the battle of Ash's Buizel against Clayton's Mr. Mime was going to take place.
"I wonder what kind of battle it's going to be."Dawn said.
"It all depends how Buizel goes up against a psychic type like Mr. Mime."Brock informed.
"Let's see how it goes."Denise murmured.
"Alright!"Clayton spoke up. "Give me your best!"
"Let's do it, Buizel!"Ash encouraged. "Use Aqua Jet!"
Buizel surrounds himself in water before launching himself forward to attack Mr. Mime.
"Mr. Mime use Psychic!"Clayton ordered. "Go!"
Mr. Mime counters Buizel's Aqua Jet with Psychic, sending his opponent into a tree.
"No!"Ash shouted in shock. "Buizel!"
"Pika!"Pikachu gasped.
"Buizel, are you okay?!"Ash asked.
Buizel got up his feet and nodded bravely at his trainer.
"Attacking his head on shows me you got real gut!"Clayton remarked. "I like that!"
"Whoa."Ash said with a glare. "They're strong, but I'm not going to lose!"
"Mr. Mime will just dodge Buizel's attacks."Brock stated.
Denise bit her lip as she continued to watch the battle.
"Okay, Buizel, use Sonic Boom!"Ash ordered.
Buizel leapt up as his two tails glow white and he flips around, sending a large, white shock wave at Mr. Mime.
"Double Team!"Clayton ordered.
Mr. Mime evades Buizel's attack using Double Team.
"Use Aqua Jet one more time!"Ash ordered.
Buizel uses Aqua Jet as he headed towards Mr. Mime, who stood in the sky.
A small grin crept up on Clayton's face causing Denise's eyes to widen.
"Ash!"Denise called out. "It's a trap!"
"So we finish this off with an explosive fist!"Clayton announced. "Mr. Mime, Thunder Punch!"
Mr. Mime attacks Buizel with a Thunder Punch, knocking him out in the process.
"Buizel!"Ash shouted.
"This battle is over!"Clayton declared. "And that makes it that over for sure!"
Buizel growled sourly at being defeated as Ash, Denise, Dawn, Brock, Pikachu, Prinplup and Vaporeon went to check on him.
"Buizel."Ash said as he bent down to touch Buizel. "Are you okay?"
"Pika..."Pikachu responded.
"Prinplup."Prinplup chirped.
"Vaporeon."Vaporeon sighed.
"I feel really bad losing, Buizel."Ash stated in shame. "I guess I got a little carried away."
Clayton and Mr. Mime stepped forward, earning Ash and Buizel's attention.
"So AshBui, tell me."Clayton insisted. "What is the most important thing in a Pokemon's battle? Now think. The secret lies deep within the lake and the capacity to stop."
"It's water?"Dawn assumed. "I'm clueless."
"He means the mind, sis."Denise suggested.
"That's correct, DenVap."Clayton agreed. "It's the mind. A mind that is undisturbed by the wind will conquer the flow of water. That is the secret art of the battle."
"I get it."Ash admitted. "Maybe."
"Bui bui."Buizel responded.
"Of course!"Clayton replied with a smile. "You wanted to train with me!"
"Yeah! I want to train too!"Ash stated as he stood up. "So can you please teach me everything you know, Chancellor?"
"He's serious."Dawn said in surprise.
Denise smiled. "Ash wants to make sure he becomes a trainer that will help his Pokemon become stronger."
Clayton smiled at Ash with his arms folded.
"It won't be easy."Clayton warned with a smirk. "Do you think you have what it takes, AshBui?"
"For sure!"Ash answered.
"Bui bui!"Buizel agreed.
"That's good enough for me."Clayton stated.
"Thanks, Clayton!"Ash remarked.
Buizel smiled. "Bui bui!"
Clayton takes the heroes to the cottage where he and Mr. Mime were living in.
"So what kind of training we are going to do?"Ash asked.
"Take a look over there."Clayton instructed.
Clayton points to a small waterfall that was covered by a wooden shelf on top causing Ash and Buizel to notice it.
"Yeah."Ash said.
Clayton and Mr. Mime landed near the small waterfall.
"You see a battle is a collusion of fists."Clayton explained. "So, AshBui will learn to master the move! Mr. Mime! Ice Punch! Let's go! Now!"
Mr. Mime and Clayton shows them what they can do, by punching the waterfall and turning it all into ice using an Ice Punch.
"Ice Punch!"Ash said in awe. "Wow!"
"That is awesome!"Denise complemented.
"All the water got frozen in just one punch!"Brock commented.
"Amazing."Denise stated.
Clayton then punches it and breaks the ice.
"AshBui, you punch the waterfall and tell your mind that your minds crosses a plaque! Then you'll be able to master Ice Punch! So your turn!"
"Right/Bui!"Ash and Buizel answered in unison.
Ash and Buizel began to practice by punching the waterfall, but Clayton scolds them for punching weak.
"Think about your form as well!"Clayton instructed. "You won't be able to master Ice Punch that way!"
"Yes, sir!"Ash answered.
Dawn, Denise, Brock, Pikachu, Prinplup and Vaporeon watched Ash and Buizel train.
"I thought this would be a new way to train."Dawn admitted.
"Looks that way, sis."Denise agreed.
"Pikachu."Pikachu said.
"Prinplup."Prinplup chirped.
"Vaporeon."Vaporeon responded.
"You're doing it all wrong."Clayton informed causing Ash and Buizel to stop punching the waterfall. "You won't be able to master Ice Punch, if you continue punching weakly like that."
"So how do you do it?"Ash questioned.
"Like this!"Clayton answered.
Then Clayton demonstrates again, punching the water without splashing and without his fist getting wet.
This caused everyone to become stunned.
"Look at the water!"Brock shouted. "It didn't even splash!"
"No way!"Ash said in amazement. "Your fist didn't get wet!"
"Mastering Ice Punch requires intensive concentration as well as speed."Clayton declared. "Simply punching away isn't going to do anything. You must keep that in mind, if you want to master Ice Punch you see!"
"I think so."Ash responded.
"Just keep training AshBui!"Clayton informed and looked at partner. "Mr. Mime! Let's go!"
After telling them they need to improve their concentration and speed, Clayton leaves Ash and Buizel to hone their skills.
"Concentration, speed..."Ash murmured quietly, holding his chin.
By evening, the others prepared the table to have dinner as Ash and Buizel continued their training.
Denise finished placing the chopsticks near the plates as she glanced at Ash and Buizel.
"Buizel! Concentrate and collect your strength into a single spot!"Ash ordered.
Buizel nodded at his trainer.
"Now punch!"Ash ordered.
Buizel punches the waterfall causing him to make a little splash.
"Do it again! This time give it all you can give it!"Ash ordered. "Buizel, concentrate. Just concentrate."
Buizelf focused completely at the waterfall.
"Now punch!"Ash demanded.
Buizel punches the waterfall again and has a spot on its had frozen.
Buizel's technique had dramatically improved, with the Weasel Pokemon finally succeeding creating some ice with a quick jab at the waterfall.
"It looks the punch has cooled down your fist."Ash complemented, looking at the small piece of ice on Buizel's paw. "Concentrate and you'll be able to improve for sure."
Buizel smiled. "Bui bui."
"Now what else we can come up with to get Buizel's concentration all charged up?"Ash murmured.
At dinner, Clayton and Mr. Mime were eating Brock's meals with a huge appetite as the heroes watched them.
"Looks to me you think Brock's cooking is pretty good too."Dawn chuckled.
"I like to think I'm a pretty good cook anyway."Brock admitted.
"Good?! Unbelievably good!"Clayton announced. "Unbe-good for sure!"
"Mr Mime."Mr. Mime agreed.
Dawn sweat dropped. "Unbe-good?"
"Considering we eat berries and nothing more."Clayton admitted.
"You seriously only eat berries?"Denise said in disbelief.
"Yes!"Clayton answered. "But this is delicious! Unbe-licious for sure!"
Clayton and Mr. Mime continue eating as Denise and Vaporeon glanced at each other.
"Still don't get the whole nickname phrases."Denise muttered.
"Vaporeon."Vaporeon answered.
Everyone continued eating their delicious meals.
However, Ash was oddly not eating and so was Buizel.
"You're not going to eat, Ash?"Dawn asked.
"Buizel, let's go."Ash suggested.
"Bui."Buizel replied with a nod.
Ash leaves the table along with Buizel and Pikachu.
"Ash, where are you going?"Denise called out.
"Ash is so preoccupied with mastering Ice Punch, he doesn't want to eat."Brock stated.
"AshBui has potential, so you don't have to worry about them. In short, I would say 'no-wo!"Clayton complemented and moved forward his empty bowl. "And I would like seconds please! And in short, that sec, please!"
Brock, Dawn and Denise all sweat dropped at Clayton's responds.
"No-wo?"Brock said.
"Sec, please?"Dawn asked.
"Still don't get it all."Denise grumbled.
Later that Night...
Ash takes a moment to gaze at the moon and watch as the wind carries loose leaves.
"You two still working hard on Ice Punch, huh?"
Ash, Buizel and Pikachu notice Denise approaching them with Gardevoir in tow.
"We sure are, Dennie."Ash replied. "What about you and Gardevoir?"
"Well, we decided to do a little bit of training for the Grand Festival."Denise said. "But judging by the blowing wind, it looks like it can wait since you and Buizel have to improve that Ice Punch."
Ash suddenly becomes inspired when he noticed the blowing leaves.
"That's it!"Ash remarked. "That will work!"
"Ash?"Denise asked in confusion.
"Being Buizel's trainer, I can't let things be stuck like this for long!"Ash stated. "That's for sure! We do this! We're going to improve that Ice Punch no matter how long it takes!"
"Bui bui!"Buizel remarked.
"Pika pika!"Pikachu agreed.
Denise and Gardevoir smiled at Ash's confidence.
"That's the spirit."Denise chuckled. "Then let's first give you a demonstration."
"Right."Ash agreed.
"Gardevoir, use Ice Punch!"Denise ordered.
Gardevoir's hand glows bluish-white before she uses her ice attack to punch a tree to make it icy.
"You got that, Buizel?"Denise asked. "To use Ice Punch is all about concentration and speed, if you ever want to use that move to attack an opponent during a battle."
Buizel nodded at Denise.
"Then let's do it!"Ash encouraged and looked at his water type pokemon. "Ready, Buizel?"
"Bui!"Buizel answered.
Ash drops a leaf, which goes to Buizel because of the wind and Buizel punches it.
"Just loose with a punch won't do anything!"Ash reminded. "You got to pinpoint your punch and increase your concentration like Gardevoir did! Try again!"
Ash drops another leaf towards Buizel.
Buizel almost used Ice Punch, so Ash drops another one, but the Weasel Pokemon almost hit and froze it.
"You are doing well, Buizel!"Denise assured. "Keep it up and you'll master Ice Punch before you know it!"
"Gardevoir!"Gardevoir answered.
After a few unsuccessful attempts, Buizel's fist starts glowing for a short time.
But still Buizel has to practice more in order to master Ice Punch.
The Next Morning...
Ash wants a re-match against Clayton and Mr. Mime to make up for yesterday's defeat.
"I want to challenge you to another battle Clayton."Ash stated.
"So your saying you mastered Ice Punch, AshBui?"Clayton assumed.
"Yeah."Ash answered.
"Pika/Bui!"Pikachu and Buizel responded in unison.
"Ash, are you okay?"Dawn asked.
"Yes."Ash answered with a smile. "Just you watch us."
Clayton was silent for a moment before replying.
"I accept!"Clayton declared. "Challenge on!"
Everyone returned to the forest area they were yesterday, but this time a storm was approaching in the area.
Team Rocket attempted to get Mr. Mime, only to get blasted off when struck by lightning.
"WE'RE BLASTING OFF AGAIN!"Team Rocket screamed and disappeared in the dark grey sky.
"Took off in the right moment."Denise thought in amusement.
"Alright, let's get going!"Ash announced with a confident smile.
"Yes!"Clayton sneered. "Ready when you are!"
"Use Aqua Jet!"Ash ordered.
Buizel starts by using Aqua Jet as he did in the previous battle.
"Mr Mime use Psychic now!"Clayton ordered.
Buizel gets once again stopped by Mr Mime's Psychic.
However, Buizel bounces off a tree instead of being hit.
"Yes!"Ash chuckled.
Dawn, Prinplup and Pikachu cheered as Brock, Denise and Gardevoir watched in approval.
"Wow!"Brock commented. "Buizel just avoided the effects of Mr Mime's Psychic!"
"Buizel use Sonic Boom!"Ash ordered.
Buizel leapt up as his tailed glowed white.
"Use Double Team!"Clayton ordered.
Mr Mime uses Double Team to create copies of himself to confuse Buizel.
Buizel uses Sonic Boom to hit the illusions caused by Double Team.
"Come on, Ash!"Brock protested. "You can't beat him by using the same moves as before!"
"Bro-Bre is right about that."Clayton informed. "The time has come show me your Ice Punch, AshBui!"
"Let's show them, Buizel!"Ash encouraged. "Ice Punch! Let's go!"
Buizel activates Ice Punch fully causing Brock, Dawn and Denise to become amazed.
"Yes!"Denise chuckled. "Buizel's Ice Punch is finally completed!"
"Now Mr Mime use Thunder Punch!"Clayton ordered.
Buizel and Mr. Mime get in collision by using Ice Punch and Thunder Punch.
This caused flashes of yellow and blue sparks to come out from their punches.
"Hurry up and dodge it, Buizel!"Ash ordered.
Though Mr. Mime was stronger, Buizel evades it.
"But you won't dodge our next move."Clayton warned.
"Mr Clayton has got a really strong Mr Mime that's for sure."Ash thought with a frown."But we're not going to give up! We'll nail our Ice Punch!"
Thunder started rumbling loudly in the dark sky as Ash feels a raindrop gently hit him.
Buizel and Ash share a smile since they have a secret plan in motion.
"Hey, Clayton."Ash said. "The real battle is just getting started."
Clayton smirked and nodded in agreement.
"I had a feeling you would say that, AshBui."Clayton stated. "I agree. So now we are battling fist to fist! Okay! Mr Mime and I are making the first move and that's Thunder Punch!"
Thunder crackling started appearing in Mr Mime's fist.
"Buizel get going!"Ash ordered.
Mr Mime uses Thunder Punch as Buizel charges towards him.
Buizel begins to run faster, as its ability, Swift Swim, was activated due to the rain.
"Where did that incredible speed come from?!"Clayton said in shock.
"Swift Swim! That is Buizel's ability!"Brock explained. "The rain increases Buizel's speed!"
"Buizel, I want you to get as close as you can!"Ash instructed.
Buizel got closer as Ash calls out his next attack.
"Alright!"Ash called out. "Buizel use Ice Punch!"
Buizel dodges Mr. Mime's Thunder Punch and freezes the Mime Pokemon using Ice Punch, defeating him.
"Alright!"Ash cheered in joy and rushed towards Buizel. "Buizel, we did it!"
"Buizel!"Buizel agreed.
Buizel and Ash fist pumped each other while Dawn, Prinplup, Pikachu, Brock, Denise and Gardevoir cheered at the Weasel Pokemon defeating Mr Mime.
"That was totally amazing!"Dawn complemented.
"Impressive Ice Punch."Brock agreed.
"It really was."Denise answered with hint of pride.
When it stopped raining, it was time for the heroes to continue their journey.
"A leaf?"Brock said in surprise.
"Yeah."Ash agreed with a nod. "Also with Denise demonstrating how Gardevoir uses Ice Punch."
"Happy to help."Denise answered as her cheeks became a bit pink.
"It was a great idea to focus Buizel's energy on a single point that constantly around."Brock remarked. "Buizel's concentration got sharper and that's why Buizel was able to master Ice Punch in such a short time."
"Though there's more to that, BroBre."Clayton admitted. "Ash used the sudden range towards his advantage and then they used Swift Swim to increase Buizel's speed. They defeated Mr Mime because Buizel was faster. And that's the reason why Pokemon battles are so extraordinary and thrilling."
"Clayton, thanks a lot."Ash declared.
"AshBui, you've made me proud."Clayton informed. "I knew you had it in you."
Buizel smiled. "Bui bui."
"But you still have a long way to go."Clayton reminded. "Make sure to continue your training all along your journey. Let's battle again. In short, let's bat-ain."
"Sure."Ash agreed with an excited smile.
Pikachu smiled. "Pika pika."
"Bui."Buizel remarked.
Clayton and Ash shook hands, promising they would battle once more.
Then the heroes waved goodbye to Clayton and Mr Mime to continue their journey to Daybreak Town.
