Chapter 150: Yes in Dee Dee, It's Dawn!
The day before the Daybreak Contest will take place, the group arrived in town.
Dawn and her Pokémon were enthusiastic to win their fifth Ribbon, so they all head towards the Contest Hall to practice.
"Now!"Dawn cheered, raising a fist. "Are you all ready for practice, gang?"
Prinplup, Cyndaquil and Mamoswine all cheered with their trainer, all feeling confident to practice for their next Pokemon Contest.
Denise smiled in approval as she walked with Combusken, Ash, Pikachu and Brock.
"That's the spirit, Dawn."Denise chuckled.
Combusken smiled. "Combusken."
"It's also time for you to work on that Flame Ice too."Ash remarked.
"Pika."Pikachu agreed with a nod.
"Of course, you'll be using other moves than Flame Ice."Brock commented. "So make sure they're all in tip top shape as well."
"You know I am going to be perfecting all my moves and win that contest for sure."Dawn replied brightly.
Dawn's mood suddenly plummets, however, when she spots a Coordinator's Plusle and Minun.
Her face goes pale and she slumps to the ground, loudly proclaiming her displeasure as Ash and Brock look on in confusion.
"Oh no!"Dawn panicked as she held her head and closed her eyes. "No! No! No!"
"What is it, Dawn?"Denise asked. "What's got you so-"
Denise notice Plusle and Minun causing her eyes to sparkle in admiration and blush a bit.
"Aw!"Denise cooed, holding her hands. "It's Plusle and Minun!"
The coordinator that was with Plusle and Minun turned around, revealing herself to be Ursula.
"You guys."Ursula said.
Ash, Brock, Pikachu, Combusken and Prinplup became surprised to see Ursula.
"You!"Ash and Brock said in unison.
"It's Ursula."Dawn murmured.
Denise frowned seeing Ursula being the trainer of Plusle and Minun.
"Her again."Denise retorted.
"Dawn and Denise."Ursula answered with a slight smile.
"Hey."Dawn greeted as she stood up and Ursula walked forward. "Long time no see."
"So you're actually competing in the Daybreak Contest too."Ursula assumed. "How many ribbons do you have?"
"Four of them."Dawn responded.
"Isn't that a coincidence I have four ribbons as well. I wonder who will get the fifth ribbon first."Ursula responded smugly and looked at Denise. "I assume you still have three ribbons, Denise?"
"Nope."Denise responded with a smirk and took out her ribbon, revealing her five contest ribbon. "I have now five ribbons."
"Five?!"Ursula said in shock and then huffed. "That doesn't matter. Since I will be able to beat you easily in the Grand Festival."
"Dream on."Denise scoffed. "I am looking forward to make us even."
"Also, for your information me and my team have been working hard for tomorrow, see?"Dawn informed.
Prinplup, Cyndaquil and Mamoswine all responded in agreement.
"Yeah. Yeah. You have practice well, Dawn."Ursula sneered rudely, waving her hand. "But your best won't be enough to beat us. So meet the ace Pokémon that I raised just for a double performance! I know present you, Plusle and Minun!"
Plusle and Minun came forward and cheered together as their little paws started forming short sparkling orbs.
Denise stared at Plusle and Minun lovingly while Dawn became scared once again.
"They're so cute!"Denise squealed in delight.
"No! No!"Dawn panicked while holding her head. "No! No!"
Ash, Pikachu, Brock and Combusken were once again confused to see Dawn completely scared of Plusle and Minun.
"Why are you so afraid of?"Ash asked.
"Look at how cute Plusle and Minun are."Brock said.
"This can't be the first time you have seen them, right?"Ash assumed.
"Plusle the Cheering Pokémon."Ash's Pokédex buzzed. "Plusle loves to cheer for its fellow Pokémon and it creates sparkling pom-poms by shorting out the electrical current released from its paws."
Ash then scanned Minun with his Pokédex.
"Minun the Cheering Pokémon."Ash's Pokédex buzzed. "Minun and Plusle's electrical current promotes blood circulation and energizes their target."
"No! This is serious!"Dawn panicked. "Anything but Plusle and Minun! Please!"
"Dawn! How rude can you get!"Ursula retorted. "If you keep this up, you'll hurt both of their feelings!"
Plusle and Minun both spoke, agreeing with their trainer.
Dawn looked down in shame.
"Sorry."Dawn apologised.
"I know. As a special treat of Plusle and Minun's double performance."Ursula suggested. "Now pay attention and you are bound to feel major happiness and joy."
Sparkling orbs appeared on Plusle and Minun's little paws as Denise looked at them in admiration and Dawn began to get scared.
"Alright, Plusle and Minun!"Ursula remarked. "Go!"
Plusle and Minun began perform their Contest routine.
Dawn shudders as they dance on either side of her, producing static electricity between them.
With a sudden explosion, Dawn's hair was standing on end, glittering with sparks.
"Not again."Denise groaned.
"Wow, Dawn!"Ursula laughed. "You look hilarious!"
"Your hair is sparkling like a diamond."Brock said.
"Diamond."Dawn muttered under her breath.
Dawn then blacks out and collapsed backwards, surprising her friends while Denise face palmed in disapproval.
"Dawn!"Ash gasped.
"Prinplup!"Prinplup chirped.
"Oh my..."Ursula said.
Afterwards...
Ash, Brock and Denise watch over Dawn, who still hasn't woken up.
"Prinplup."Prinplup chirped.
Prinplup shakes Dawn's arm worriedly before his trainer's eyes finally open and she quickly jolted into a sitting position to check her hair.
"Dawn, it's okay."Denise assured with a smile. "Your hair is back to normal."
"Great."Dawn sighed lightly.
"Dawn, are you alright?"Brock asked.
Ash brought a cup of warm milk while Denise brought a plate of her fresh made sugar cookies.
"I brought you some hot milk."Ash commented.
"And I brought my sugar cookies to cheer you up."Denise remarked.
"Thank you, Ash and Denise."Dawn thanked.
Ash offered Dawn a mug of warm milk, which she accepts after putting her hat back on.
Dawn takes a sip from her cup of milk and ate a sugar cookie causing her to smile.
"That was very thoughtful."Dawn complemented.
Denise smiled. "Your welcome."
"Thanks."Ash thanked. "Though it was Brock's idea."
"I figured if you drink something warm, it would calm you right down."Brock exclaimed.
Prinplup sat next to Dawn on the right side.
"Prinplup?"Prinplup asked with a hint of concern.
"I'm fine, Prinplup."Dawn assured. "Don't worry."
"So what happened to you before?"Ash questioned.
"It was weird the way you reacted to Plusle and Minun."Brock said. "You looked really scared."
Dawn looked down sadly causing Denise to put an arm around her.
"I know."Dawn replied.
"Do you want me to tell them, Dawn?"Denise suggested.
Dawn shook her head.
"I'll tell them, Denise."Dawn responded before looking at Ash and Brock. "I was going to tell you about it one day. So why not now? It happened when me and Denise were in kindergarten. Kenny, Leona and I were given the job of Pokémon Caretakers."
"Pokémon Caretakers?"Ash said.
"Our class had a Plusle and a Minun. So as Pokémon Caretakers, it was our job to give them Pokémon food, make sure they had fresh water and clean their playpen everyday."Dawn explained. "But then…"
Flashback…
Kenny and Leona were cleaning the playpen while Dawn was happily chasing Plusle and Minun.
"Plusle! Minun! Slow down!"Dawn giggled. "Come on! Just one little hug!"
Kenny and Leona frowned seeing Dawn busy playing instead of helping clean the playpen.
"Stop goofing off, Dawn!"Kenny complained.
"You are a Pokémon Caretaker too!"Leona reminded.
Dawn caught both Plusle and Minun before smiling at Kenny and Leona.
"Since you're both busy to give them their Pokémon food, I thought I keep Plusle and Minun out of the way."Dawn remarked before looking at Plusle and Minun, who were both struggling at her grip. "Come on, Plusle and Minun. You two can play later."
Plusle and Minun in Dawn's arms yell out in protest and struggle to get free causing Kenny to realise that the Cheering Pokémon don't like being handled in such a way.
"They don't look too happy."Kenny said with an unsure expression.
"No need to worry!"Dawn giggled as she hugged Plusle and Minun tightly, who struggled even more. "We're best buddies, right?"
Plusle and Minun, finally reaching their limit, unleash an Electric attack to get her to let go. The attack works, and as Plusle and Minun scamper off, Dawn looked completely stunned, her hair sticking out on end and glittering.
"Hey Dawn, are you okay?"Leona asked.
"No need to worry, Leona."Dawn chuckled with a nervous smile.
"Your hair is sparkling like a diamond."Kenny complemented.
"Like a Dandruff."Leona added.
"I'm calling you, Diamond Dandruff."Kenny declared.
"Diamond Dandruff? Good idea."Leona agreed.
"Dee-Dee for short."Kenny suggested. "Perfect."
The awful nickname soon stuck after Amy shouted it out in front of the whole class, leaving Dawn humiliated.
"Hey there, Diamond Dandruff Dee-Dee!"Amy called out.
This caused Dawn to look down while blushing as everyone in the whole class (except Denise and Lucas) started laughing at her.
"Diamond Dandruff?"
"Dee-Dee?"
Denise and Lucas glared at their classmates.
"Leave Dawn alone!"Denise scowled.
"You are all being mean!"Lucas retorted.
"I don't want diamond Dandruff!"Dawn sobbed as she held her head.
Dawn sighed sadly as she finished her humiliating story.
"So you got that nickname because of what happened with Plusle and Minun?"Ash said quietly.
"Prinplup."Prinplup chirped.
"Yeah."Dawn agreed. "Because I love them, I would never understand why they would do something awful to me like that."
"It's been like her childhood fear during kindergarten."Denise added. "Lucas and I were the only ones who didn't use that name on her."
Dawn and Denise became angry when they notice Ash, Brock, Pikachu, Prinplup and Combusken starting to laugh at the story.
"Okay, what's so funny?!"Dawn scowled.
"Sorry."Ash chuckled, struggling to contain his laughter. "The most fun thing is you."
"Prinplup!"Prinplup chirped.
"Prinplup! Not you too!"Dawn retorted.
"There is nothing to laugh about!"Denise snapped. "This is serious!"
Brock cleared his throat to speak to Dawn.
"A Pokémon wouldn't attack unless they were provoked first."Brock stated.
"Huh?"Dawn said in confusion.
"The reason Plusle and Minun zapped you because you were chasing after them first."Ash declared.
"Well, it was my fault."Dawn sighed. "I never thought of that before."
"Hey. No need to worry, sis."Denise remarked with a smile. "We were all still small kids that time."
"She's right."Brock agreed. "It was a big deal then. But if you look at it now, it's no big deal."
"I guess so."Dawn responded.
"So wipe out Ursula tomorrow's contest and wipe those bad memories too!"Ash added.
"Prinplup!"Prinplup chirped.
"Combusken!"Combusken said.
"This is a perfect opportunity to free you from the past."Brock admitted.
"Remember we'll be cheering you all the way, Dawn."Denise informed with a confident smirk. "You have nothing to fear."
"Thanks, guys."Dawn thanked and became confident. "I'll do my best!"
Across the room, however, Ursula has been listening in, and seems quite pleased with what she's heard as she laughs to herself.
"That story was quite a scoop."Ursula sneered. "Thanks a lot, Dee-Dee."
The Next Morning…
Marian welcomed everyone to the Daybreak Contest.
"The thrills and excitements are all here! And that could only mean one thing! So getting ready for the fabulous Daybreak Pokémon Contest!"Marian announced. "The wait is finally over and soon you'll see it is all worth it! Ladies and gentlemen! As you all know we are coming to you live from Daybreak Town! The Town of the morning light! It's been a while since we had a double performance, so sit back and enjoy the magnificent sights of our Pokémon task teams as they wow you with their extraordinary talents! Remember; Double performances mean double the dazzle! So, take a look at what our Pokémon Coordinators will receive the beautiful Daybreak Ribbon!"
Marian lifted up the Daybreak Ribbon for everyone in the crowd to see.
"Now it is my distinct honour to introduce our amazing annual judges!"Marian announced. "Here is our first judge Mr. Contesta!"
"Thank you and hello."Mr. Contesta greeted. "I am sure the Double Performances will cheer us all!"
"Next from the Pokémon Fan Club; Mr Sukizo!"Marian declared.
"Double performances are remarkable!"Mr Sukizo informed.
"And finally Daybreak Town's very own Nurse Joy!"Marian announced.
"I look forward for a great event and I wish everyone the best of luck!"Nurse Joy declared.
"Allow me to introduce myself!"Marian declared. "I am your humble host! Marian!"
At the Backstage…
Dawn smiled at Prinplup.
"Prinplup, it's time!"Dawn remarked.
Prinplup nodded. "Prinplup."
"And remember we have come along way since our double performance back in Hearthome City, you know?"Dawn said and held Prinplup's flipper-like wings. "Since then, we have made our skills sharper and we levelled up a tone! So, let's go out and have fun!"
"Prinplup."Prinplup said with a smile.
Dawn returns Prinplup in his pokeball before placing a capsule ball on it.
"We're going to win this!"Dawn vowed.
Plusle and Minun suddenly appear on Dawn's shoulders making her freak out and drop on her knees.
"Thanks."Ursula said rudely with a smile. "You've been playing with my Plusle and Minun. That's so nice, Miss Dee Dee."
Dawn glared at Ursula as she stood up.
"It's Dawn! Not Dee-Dee!"Dawn snapped and became surprised. "Wait. How do you know that name?"
"Who knows."Ursula sneered. "Aren't you going to sparkle your hair due?"
"Of course not!"Dawn snapped.
Dawn stood her ground while Jessilina watched on confident the infighting will give her a chance at victory.
On the Stage…
"And now ladies and gentlemen, let's begin with round one! The performance stage!"Marian announced. "And here is our first coordinator!"
The curtains opened revealing Jessilina and Carnivine.
"Hi, there!"Jessilina greeted. "It's Jessilina!"
The crowd cheered loudly at Jessilina.
Jessilina and Carnivine step onto the stage performing a synchronized arm-waving dance.
"Alright, Carnivine!"Jessilina remarked. "Let's get this party started!"
Carnivine went on the stage as Marian looked confused.
"Excuse me, but are you aware this is a double performance?"Marian reminded. "You do need two Pokémon."
"Patience."Jessilina instructed and took out a Arbok-shaped flute. "I am one step ahead of you."
Brock, Ash, Pikachu, Denise and Combusken sat among the crowd, watching Jessilina's performance.
"I wonder what she's going to do?"Ash wondered.
"Pika."Pikachu said.
"Maybe she won't be off beat this time."Brock commented.
Denise frowned. "Let's see."
"Combusken."Combusken replied.
"Alright, Carnivine. Ready?"Jessilina asked.
Carnivine nodded. "Carnivine."
Jessilina began playing a flute to summon Seviper from its Poké Ball which glowed brightly.
"Alright, Seviper!"Jessilina declared. "Your up!"
Seviper popped out of its Poké Ball and joined Carnivine.
"Unbelievable!"Marian announced with a smile."Seviper mysteriously appeared from inside Carnivine's mouth! Obviously, Jessilina played with Seviper's Pokeball there!"
"Awesome."Ash commented.
"She's come up with another performance style."Brock stated.
"That is impressive."Denise responded.
The crowd cheered at Jessilina's performance.
Backstage…
Dawn, Ursula and the other coordinators watched Jessilina's Pokémon perform a synchronised routine.
"I don't get it."Ursula said.
Dawn simply sweat dropped at the performance.
"It's just Jessilina doing the things she does best."Dawn remarked.
On the Stage…
"Seviper!"Jessilina called out. "Bring it on home!"
Seviper jumped into the air and spin in a circle.
"Now Carnivine use Bullet Seed!"Jessilina ordered.
Carnivine fired Bullet Seed towards Seviper, creating a fireworks display.
"Now there's a shimmering display combination by Seviper's spinning and Carnivine's Bullet Seed!"Marian declared. "Just gorgeous!"
Seviper then curled up and spins into the air, which transforms Carnivine's Bullet Seed into green sparkles.
For their finish, Seviper curls itself around Jessilina while she strikes a pose and Carnivine provided an added Bullet Seed sparkle.
The crowd cheered and clapped again at Jessilina and her Pokémon's performance.
"What did you expect?"Jessilina said with a smirk.
"A performance full of surprises."Mr. Contesta declared. "And no doubt a kick way for a double performance festivities with a bang."
"Carnivine and Seviper remarkable."Mr Sukizo added.
"What an unusual and wonderful way to show off Pokémon."Nurse Joy responded softly.
"And now our next entrance!"Marian declared.
After some performances, it was Dawn's turn to perform.
"Now here is our next coordinator!"Marian announced.
The crowd cheered as Dawn appeared onto the stage with a curtsy.
Denise smiled. "Dawn is up."
"Combusken."Combusken chirped.
"Prinplup! Buneary!"Dawn remarked. "Spotlight!"
Dawn brought out her two capsule balls causing colourful stars to burst out to reveal Prinplup and Buneary.
"Great!"Marian remarked. "Prinplup and Buneary give a wonderful and lively introduction to the crowd!"
"Now Prinplup use Bubble Beam!"Dawn ordered. "And Buneary use Ice Beam!"
Prinplup uses Bubble Beam and Buneary followed with Ice Beam, freezing the bubbles floating around the arena.
"Amazing!"Marian announced."Buneary's Ice Beam just froze Prinplup's Bubble Beam and now the bubbles are just floating around the arena like balloons!"
Denise and Combusken gasped in amazement at the beautiful floating ice bubbles.
"It worked!"Ash remarked.
"Pika!"Pikachu agreed.
"Yes, but where does it go from here?"Brock said.
"Buneary use Bounce!"Dawn ordered.
Buneary started use Bounce to leap in the frozen bubbles, displaying its footwork.
This caused the crowd to cheer at the Bunny Pokémon.
"Prinplup! Buneary! Good job!"Dawn chuckled. "Keep it up!"
"What a fancy footwork!"Marian admitted."Not only Buneary's Bounce and Prinplup's Bubble Beam is not only an unusual combination move! It's playing so neat!"
"Alright, Buneary!"Dawn called out. "Let's go!"
Buneary started spinning around and started bursting the frozen bubbles.
"Prinplup use Bubble Beam!"Dawn ordered.
Buneary and Prinplup spin together to burst the frozen bubbles for a glittery effect to send a shower of sparkles down to the crowd.
The crowd cheered loudly at Prinplup and Buneary.
Dawn smiled at Prinplup and Buneary for their performance.
"You two were awesome!"Dawn complemented. "I never seen such an amazing show!"
"That's my sister!"Denise laughed.
"Way da go, Dawn!"Ash chuckled.
"That performance gave Dawn's confidence a boast."Brock stated.
"I simply couldn't take my eyes off Buneary and Prinplup's performance."Mr. Contesta exclaimed. "What a tag team."
"Prinplup and Buneary."Mr. Sukizo commented. "Both remarkable."
"And who would've expected them to play a tune as well."Nurse Joy informed. "That was so much fun."
"Now let's keep on moving with more fun!"Marian announced and glanced at the stage. "You're on!"
The crowd cheered as the curtains opened to reveal Ursula next to perform.
"And here comes today's main attraction!"Ursula said with a smirk. "Okay! Gabite! Come out! Jigglypuff! You too!"
Ursula threw out her two capsule balls causing cherry blossom flowers to come out before Gabite appeared on the stage.
"Gabite!"
The second capsule ball released a dark red floating heart which burst into mini ones causing Jigglypuff to appear.
"Jigglypuff!"
Denise's eyes became pink hearts at seeing how adorable Jigglypuff looked.
"Aw!"Denise cooed in admiration. "Jigglypuff is so cute!"
"Yeah, but watch out when it sings."Ash warned with a sheepish smile.
After appearing, Jigglypuff did a rolling pose with Gabite.
"Gabite's speed and Jigglypuff's rolling makes quite a team!"Marian informed. "We are seeing quite a performance!"
Backstage…
Dawn, Prinplup and Buneary watched Ursula's Pokémon perform.
"A Jigglypuff?"Dawn said.
Dawn took out her Pokédex to scan Jigglypuff.
"Jigglypuff, the Balloon Pokémon."Dawn's Pokédex buzzed. "When Jigglypuff's big eyes begin to quiver, everyone becomes sleepy as it sings a lullaby."
On Stage…
"Jigglypuff use Rollout!"Ursula ordered.
Jigglypuff speeds into a Rollout while Gabite directs it with prowess.
"And Gabite gracefully rolls Jigglypuff using its shoulders!"Marian announced.
"Alright Gabite!"Ursula remarked. "Iron Tail!"
Gabite then tosses Jigglypuff high into the air with a flick of Iron Tail.
"Now Gabite!"Ursula said with a smirk. "Time to use Stone Edge!"
Gabite activates Stone Edge and sent it towards Jigglypuff.
"Jigglypuff use Hyper Voice!"Ursula ordered.
Jigglypuff destroys Gabite's Stone Edge with Hyper Voice giving a glittering view to the crowd.
"A bold performance all around and yet so beautiful!"Marian announced.
"That's a lot of power going on."Ash exclaimed.
"Ursula has trained those two very well."Brock complemented.
Denise frowned at the sight and didn't say anything.
"Jigglypuff use Gyro Ball!"Ursula ordered.
Jigglypuff then approached Gabite with Gyro Ball while spinning.
"Now Gabite use Sand Tomb!"Ursula ordered.
Jigglypuff used Gyro Ball to spin over the sand dunes created by Gabite's Sand Tomb, the clash generating rainbow-coloured dust.
"Unbelievable!"Marian announced. "The combination of Gyro Ball and Sand Tomb is creating a brilliant glow!"
"Time to finish this up!"Ursula sneered. "Gabite, Dragon Claw!"
The presentation ends with Gabite using Dragon Claw while Jigglypuff spins on her claw.
"Oh my!"Marian remarked. "Gabite has Jigglypuff gently on its claw!"
The crowd let out a loud cheer at the performance done by Ursula's Pokémon.
"And their performance comes end at a circle they started with!"Marian announced.
Ursula approached Gabite and Jigglypuff.
"Gabite, Jigglypuff, you were both great."Ursula complemented.
"Gabite and Jigglypuff were perfectly in sink."Mr Contesta stated. "It was truly brilliant."
"Not to mention remarkable too."Mr Sukizo remarked.
"I was so in odd that their combination that demonstrated their talent and poise."Nurse Joy commented.
"And here brings the end of Round 1!"Marian announced. "Next round will be the eight coordinators who made it to the second round! So be patient while the results are calculated!"
Backstage…
Ash, Brock, Denise and Combusken rushed towards Dawn, Buneary and Prinplup.
"Dawn!"Denise chuckled. "You were great out there!"
"Thanks, Denise."Dawn thanked.
Buneary started hugging Pikachu affectionately causing the Mouse Pokémon to blush a bit.
Combusken shook Prinplup's wing to congratulate him.
"Of course, Prinplup and Buneary were great too."Brock added.
"I feel a lot more confident for the double performance now."Dawn declared with a confident smile. "And I am going to win my fifth ribbon for sure."
Denise smirked. "That's the spirit."
"Well, we know your going to win for sure."Ash assured.
Brock nodded in agreement.
"My, what a friendly gesture."Ursula said.
Ursula approached the four heroes.
"Ursula."Dawn responded.
"Obviously I'm moving onto Round 2."Ursula replied. "But I could say your performance was at least energetic."
Both Dawn and Denise glared at Ursula.
"Our long wait is finally over!"Marian announced."It's time to find out who moved onto Round 2! The judges have decided the eight coordinators that are moving onto the next round are up on the screen!"
The screen showed the eight coordinators moving onto the Battle Rounds with Dawn, Ursula and Jessilina all advancing.
"You did it, Dawn!"Ash stated happily. "You're on the second round!"
"Well done."Denise agreed.
Dawn and Denise high five each other before looking at Prinplup and Buneary.
"Prinplup, Buneary, I have you two to thank."Dawn remarked.
Dawn hugs Prinplup and Buneary in joy.
"Make sure to not let your guard down during the battle round."Brock instructed.
"Right."Dawn said with a nod.
Dawn glanced at Ursula, who smirked at her.
"Yep. You listen your friends."Ursula advised. "And don't forget I'll be using Plusle and Minun and I can't wait to battle you."
"You'll lose too."Dawn added with a smile. "Don't forget my fifth ribbon is on the line."
"Remember that makes two of us."Ursula said smugly. "Make sure you don't lose until you battle me."
Dawn glared at her rival with her two Pokémon, but shrieked in fear when Plusle and Minun leap out of nowhere.
