Chapter 151: Playing the Performance Encore!
The crowd cheered loudly as Marian announced the double battles on the stage.
"The Double Performances that we have seen here in the Daybreak Contest have been absolutely thrilling!"Marian declared. "Now on our second stage is our Pokémon Double Battle!"
The Battle Stage of the Daybreak Contest started with Jessilina using Seviper and Yanmega against Ursula's Plusle and Minun.
"On my right is Ursula!"Marian announced. "And on my left is Jessilina! We have five minutes on the clock! Begin now!"
5:00
"Seviper!"Jessilina called out. "Let's use Haze!"
Seviper unleashed a Haze towards the battlefield.
"Yanmega! Quick!"Jessilina ordered. "Use Sonic Boom!"
Yanmega unleashed a Sonic Boom which created a beautiful spinning move on Seviper's haze, taking a few points from Ursula's score.
"Ladies and gentlemen!"Marian spoke up. "As you all know the audition of the second round is to perfectly execute through the five minutes limit with such elegance and beauty which is actually taken away from their opponents!"

Ursula simply smirked before giving her orders to Plusle and Minun.
"Plusle! Minun!"Ursula called out. "Use Spark!"
Plusle and Minun use a combined Spark to break the sparkling haze into a dazzling shower of sparkles, deducting more points from Jessilina's score.
Jessilina became shocked at what she just saw as Ursula simply smirked.
"Nicely done."Ursula sneered.
"And that was a beautiful combination by Plusle and Minun!"Marian remarked. "Wow! So, the spectacular battle of Ursula and Jessilina rages on!"
"Side of the bad news is I'm just getting warmed up."Ursula commented. "So get ready for a real surprise!"
"So put your money where your surprise is!"Jessilina insisted. "Yanmega lift up Seviper!"
Yanmega lifted Seviper into the air.
"Now use Helping Hand!"Ursula ordered.
Both Plusle and Minun used Helping Hand to power themselves up.
"Plusle and Minun are using Helping Hand on each other to power up!"Marian announced. "You've got to be impressed by their amazing performance!"
Brock, Prinplup, Pikachu, Ash, Denise and Combusken stood together among the crowd, watching the battle.
"What kind of move is Helping Hand?"Ash asked.
"Helping Hand increases the strength of your partner's move and by using it on each other, they're learning something more."Brock explained. "Points for their cuteness."
Denise simply frowned at seeing Ursula's Pokémon abilities, but still had confident that Dawn would win this contest.
"Seviper use Poison Tail!"Jessilina ordered. "Yanmega! Silver Wind!"
Yanmega used Silver Wind and Seviper sent a Poison Tail.
Silver Wind hits Seviper's tail, sending a twirl of poison beams at the Cheering Pokémon and deducting Ursula's points.

"Plusle! Minun!"Ursula ordered. "Spark! Let's go!"
Plusle and Minun use Spark and negate another attack which made them look sparkly.
This caused Jessilina to become nervous while
"Amazing."Denise commented. "That spark looks somehow different."
"Alright, Plusle and Minun!"Ursula encouraged. "Go!"
Plusle and Minun use a combined Spark attack powered by Helping Hand, creating an explosion followed by a shower of blue and green sparkles, leaving their opponents vulnerable.
"And that's the power of Helping Hand!"Marian stated. "The combination of Seviper and Yanmega's attacks, leaving them vulnerable!"
Jessilina lost more points at Plusle and Minun's attacks.

"Alright, Yanmega!"Jessilina shouted. "Release Seviper!"
Seviper was released towards Plusle and Minun.
"Use a spin attack formation, so it doesn't escape!"Ursula ordered.
Plusle and Minun began to twirl into a tumbleweed-like formation using Spark.
Then at the last second they split, Plusle lunging towards Seviper while Minun launched in the air towards Yanmega.
Two great balls of light appear with a popping sound.
Both of Jessilina's Pokémon fall, unable to battle and Ursula wins the match.

"And that's it! Time's up!"Marian announced. "And the coordinator moving onto the next match is Ursula!"
Ursula's face appeared on the screen as the crowd cheered loudly at her.
"But of course."Ursula responded smugly. "Right, Plusle and Minun?"
Plusle and Minun both smiled before posing together.
"I hate to admit it, but that was perfect sync."Denise stated with a small frown. "Ursula has really impressed herself than the last time we saw her."
"Yeah."Ash agreed. "She looks tough to beat."
Brock nodded in agreement.
"Someone's going to have to figure out how to stop those combinations to have any chances in beating Plusle and Minun."Brock commented.
After many Pokémon battling, it later showed part of a battle between Dawn with Mamoswine and Cyndaquil against an unnamed Coordinator with a Mightyena and a Houndoom.
"Mamoswine and Cyndaquil!"Ash called out. "Go get them!"
Pikachu, Prinplup and Combusken cheered together for their friends.
"Let's show them how much we trained!"Dawn insisted. "Cyndaquil use Flame Wheel!"
Cyndaquil leapt up into the air and used Flame Wheel.
"Quick, Mamoswine!"Dawn ordered. "Use Ice Shard!"
Mamoswine uses Ice Shard, pulling off the first stage of flame ice.
"And now flame ice!"Dawn remarked.
However, the ice melts halfway through, shocking Dawn and Mamoswine.
Cyndaquil collided with Mightyena and Houndoom, creating a fire yet sparkly explosion.
"Simply amazing!"Marian complemented. "We're witnessing a powerful flame and ice combination! What a flame wheel!"
Dawn sighed sadly to see that the fire and ice combination still didn't work.
"Not exactly what Dawn and her Pokémon attended."Brock said with a frown. "Not at all."
"But that's okay."Ash assured. "She was in a tight spot which she used in her advantage."
"True, Ash."Denise said with a nod and thought with a hint of worry. "I just hope my sister will able to master that combination when fighting Ursula."

"Time's up!"Marian announced. "And the coordinator moving onto the next stage…is Dawn!"
The crowd cheered at Dawn as she smiled at Mamoswine and Cyndaquil.
"Mamoswine! Cyndaquil!"Dawn cheered. "We did it!"
Dawn won and moved on in the competition, but she was still disappointed that her attempt at Flame Ice was unsuccessful.
Afterwards…
"Flame Ice!"Dawn ordered.
Dawn practiced the move, but once again the ice melted too early.
"Dawn, what's wrong?"Ash asked. "That combination was great if you ask me."
"Pika."Pikachu agreed.
"But that is now how flame ice is supposed to look like."Dawn commented.
"And there is no guarantee is going to work correctly the next time."Brock said. "Dawn, why don't you put it away for now and work on a more reliable combination?"
Dawn looked down, feeling a bit dishearten before Denise clasped her hands gently.
"Hey. Don't worry, sis."Denise assured kindly. "Whatever combination you will come up with, it's going to be awesome. Remember we'll be cheering for you right until the end."
A smile sprung Dawn's face at hearing her twin sister encourage her.
"Thank you, Dennie."Dawn thanked.
Unaware to the group, Ursula was hiding behind the door, grinning smugly and then walking away.
Later…
Both Dawn and Ursula were winning their matches against the other coordinators, putting them in the finals together.
"Our second matches to the final stage are done and the coordinators moving onto the final round are Dawn and Ursula!"Marian stated.
At the Changing Room…
Dawn and Ursula were preparing themselves for their upcoming battle.
"Boring!"Ursula retorted. "Facing you in the final round? What a yawn? You must know what I mean, Dee-Dee!"
"It's Dawn!"Dawn snapped.
"Whatever!"Ursula sneered. "But you beat Plusle and Minun? As if!"
"Of course, I can beat them!"Dawn scowled.
"Really?"Ursula mocked. "I can't wait to see you try, Dee-Dee!"
Ursula smirked and left the changing room, leaving Dawn and Prinplup by themselves.
"Calm down."Dawn murmured softly. "No need to worry."
A While Later…
It was time for Dawn and Ursula to battle each other.
"And now the moment you've all been waiting for! The Daybreak Contest final battle stage!"Marian announced before introducing the two coordinators. "On my right, Ursula! And on my left, Dawn!"
Denise, Vaporeon, Combusken, Prinplup and Pikachu were dressed in cheering outfits to support Dawn.
Denise was dressed in a pale pink cheerleader outfit with her dark blue hair braided in two ponytails.
Vaporeon was wearing a matching pale pink cheerleader that was a bit more stylish.
Combusken wore a bright green outfit just like Pikachu.
"It's finally Dawn against Ursula, everyone."Denise informed with a smile. "Make sure to cheer loud enough so that Dawn can cheer."
Vaporeon, Combusken, Prinplup and Pikachu all began to cheer for Dawn and their other two friends.
"Five minutes on the clock!"Marian declared. "Begin now!"
5:00
"Mamoswine and Cyndaquil!"Dawn remarked and threw out her two capsule balls. "It's time! Spotlight!"
Dawn sends out Mamoswine and Cyndaquil, the Ele-Seals on their Ball Capsules creating a torrent of lightning bolts, then Cyndaquil falls playfully on Mamoswine's tusks, beautifully blasting fire.
"Plusle and Minun!"Ursula said smugly before throwing her two capsule balls and doing a spin. "Let's fight them!"
Ursula sends out Plusle and Minun, surrounded by petals created by Flora Seals.
At first, no one could see her Pokémon, but then the petals scattered, revealing Plusle and Minun.
When they landed, the Cheering Pokémon touched their tails together, creating sparks everywhere.
"Now Mamoswine, Ice Shard!"Dawn ordered.
Mamoswine started creating an ice shard between his tusks.
"Go, Cyndaquil!"Dawn encouraged.
Fire burst out from Cyndaquil's back causing the ice shard to float up above Mamoswine.
"And that Flamethrower makes that Ice Shard shine a shining crimson!"Marian declared. "What a lovely combination! Perfect for this double performance!"
"Mamoswine!"Dawn called out. "Go for it!"
Mamoswine leapt up into the air, shocking Ursula.
"What?!"Ursula said in disbelief. "With that huge body?!"
Mamoswine ate the Ice Shard like Ash's Grotle did with his Energy Ball.
"That's it!"Denise encouraged. "Go, Dawn!"
Vaporeon, Combusken, Prinplup and Pikachu cheered at Dawn, Mamoswine and Cyndaquil.
Sparkling ice spikes grew on Mamoswine's back causing Ursula to lose a few points.
Ursula smirked. "Not bad."
"Alright! Cyndaquil! It's now your turn!"Dawn encourages. "Use Swift!"
Cyndaquil leapt up and used Swift to surround Mamoswine.
"The stars from that Swift are now circling Mamoswine!"Marian announced.
Ursula started to lose a few more points.
Cyndaquil then landed on the ice spike, blasting fire.
"Now Mamoswine use Take Down!"Dawn ordered.
Mamoswine used Take Down as he and Cyndaquil charged towards Plusle and Minun.
"Mamoswine is using Take Down with Cyndaquil on its back!"Marian declared. "Cyndaquil's flames are glowing beautifully against the ice!"
"Go for it, Dawn!"Ash encouraged.
"Plusle and Minun!"Ursula said. "Get ready to dodge!"
Plusle and Minun jump up to dodge their opponents' attacks causing Dawn to lose points.
"And with a leap, Plusle and Minun dodge the Take Down!"Marian admitted.
"Plusle and Minun use Encore!"Ursula ordered.
Plusle and Minun subsequently use Encore at Mamoswine and Cyndaquil causing them to glow a dulled colour.
This caused Dawn to lose a few more points.
"Perfect."Ursula complemented.
"What happened?"Dawn said in confusion.
Ash, Denise, Vaporeon, Combusken, Prinplup and Pikachu were confused to see Mamoswine and Cyndaquil both glowing in a strange colour.
"What kind of move was that?"Ash asked.
"It's a move called Encore."Brock declared. "And it can be bad news for Dawn."
"Well, Dee-Dee. Looks like this is the end."Ursula said smugly, earning a glare from Dawn. "Now Plusle and Minun let's give a show!"
Plusle and Minun's little hands began to form small sparkling orbs.
"Any move they'll use will just reflect back!"Dawn stated and gave her Pokémon their next attacks. "Now Mamoswine use Hidden Power! Cyndaquil use Flame Wheel!"
Dawn commands Mamoswine to use Hidden Power and Cyndaquil to use Flame Wheel, but instead they use Take Down and Swift because of Encore.
"Why are they using Take Down and Flame Wheel again?!"Dawn demanded in shock.
"Scary, right?"Ursula sneered. "Because using Encore, this caused all of your Pokémon to repeat their last moves. Get it?"
Dawn became more shocked at Ursula's reply.
"As long as Encore is in place, why give the trouble of calling any attacks?"Ursula commented with a smirk.
"So that means no matter what, we won't be able to do anything."Dawn scowled.
"Now Plusle and Minun, Helping Hand!"Ursula ordered.
Plusle and Minun use Helping Hand causing them to glow together.
"Plusle and Minun use Helping Hand at the face of their opponents' Take Down and Swift!"Marian announced.
"Spark, go!"Ursula ordered.
The Cheering Pokémon then used Charge Beam, hitting Dawn's Pokémon and taking away more points from her.
"Mamoswine!"Dawn yelled out. "Cyndaquil!"
Mamoswine and Cyndaquil hit the ground while Plusle and Minun land with their adorable poses.
"And finishing with a daring pose, Plusle and Minun use Charge Beam to give out a stunning attack!"Marian informed.
Both Ash and Denise began to realize the severity of the situation Dawn was in.
"Mamoswine and Cyndaquil are stuck with repeating their previous moves thanks to Encore."Denise retorted.
"So that means Dawn and her Pokémon can't use any other moves."Ash added.
"Right."Brock agreed with a nod. "And since they're stuck in a five minute time limit, Encore is a scary attack as you can get."
"Plusle and Minun, Spark!"Ursula ordered. "Let's go!"
Then the Cheering Pokémon use Spark to attack Mamoswine and Cyndaquil, deducting more points.
"Mamoswine and Cyndaquil are blocked from using their moves and can't do anything to stop those sparkling attacks!"Marian announced.
"Mamoswine! Cyndaquil!"Dawn panicked. "Dodge those sparks!"
Mamoswine and Cyndaquil attempt to dodge, but go back to their regular attacks, leading to both of them taking direct hits.
"Guess they'll take away as many points as they like."Ursula said with a smirk. "Now Plusle and Minun, dodge those attacks with Spark!"
Plusle and Minun use Spark once again, making Dawn drop to 1/2 of her total points and causing her Pokémon to fly back into her.
As the dust settled, Dawn, Mamoswine, and Cyndaquil's hair have all lit up causing laughs from Team Rocket.
"That is some hairdo."Ursula remarked mischievously. "To think I got to see Diamond-Dandruff in person!"
Denise became raged at seeing Ursula humiliate her twin sister and her Pokémon.
"You spoiled brat!"Denise snarled in anger. "Why don't you pick on someone your own side?"
Denise attempted to jump into the battlefield to give Ursula a piece of her mind, but Brock and Ash immediately grabbed her from interfering.
"No, Denise!"Ash protested. "Don't!"
"You can't interfere!"Brock protested. "This is Dawn's battle!"
Dawn realised what had happened and screamed in horror, hiding her head below her hand as the crowd was viewing exactly what she hoped would never be revealed.
"Dawn! You gotta get up!"Ash yelled out. "It's not over yet!"
"Don't let something from the past interfere with your battle!"Denise snapped with a glare. "Focus on the here and now!"
"I can't believe it!"Dawn thought in shame as trapped inside a nightmare. "It happened in front of all these people!"
Dawn then heard Mamoswine and Cyndaquil's voices telling her not to give up.
Mamoswine and Cyndaquil's voices manage to snap Dawn out of it, their hair dying down.
"Right."Dawn said with a nod. "It's not over yet. They can still move."
Dawn then realised that they can still move before standing up and straightened her hair.
"Mamoswine use Take Down on Cyndaquil!"Dawn ordered as she stood up. "Cyndaquil use Swift on Mamoswine!"
Dawn commands, to everyone's shock, for Cyndaquil and Mamoswine to attack each other.
"Eh?"Denise whispered in surprise.
"Huh?"Ursula said in disbelief.
"What's up with that?!"Ash questioned.
"Why do such a thing?"Brock murmured.
Dawn smiled confidently at Mamoswine and Cyndaquil.
"No need to worry."Dawn assured.
Cyndaquil and Mamoswine began to attack each other causing Dawn to lose more points.
"Still trapped in Encore, but now Cyndaquil and Mamoswine are now attacking each other!"Marian announced. "They're just losing it all!"
Ursula smirked. "Well, this is a mess."
Cyndaquil and Mamoswine continued hitting each other, bringing Dawn down to 3/8ths of her original score.
"This is nuts!"Ash retorted. "If this keeps up, Dawn will use all of her points!"
Denise continued watching the scene, but didn't say anything.
But then Encore wears off, much to Ursula's surprise, which Dawn attributed to Encore's inability to block a Pokémon's spirit.
"That Encore is now history!"Dawn sneered, surprising Ursula and the Cheering Pokémon. "Since Encore can only block a Pokémon's moves, Cyndaquil and Mamoswine only needed a fighting chance to break free! And that fight came from the heart!"
Ursula smirked and snidely praised Dawn's resourcefulness.
"Not bad at all."Ursula admitted. "You used the only moves you could to bring your Pokémon out of it."
"Dawn's strategy worked."Denise chuckled.
"That was awesome."Ash remarked. "Great idea."
"Yeah, but she's running out of time."Brock reminded.

"Charge Beam!"Ursula ordered. "Let's go!"
Plusle and Minun use Charge Beam, but Cyndaquil and Mamoswine dodge by jumping in the air, much to Ursula's chagrin.
"If we're going to win, we are going to use Flame Ice!"Dawn complemented. "And I need the two of you to do it for sure! Cyndaquil, Flame Wheel!"
Cyndaquil launched into the air and activated Flame Wheel.
"Mamoswine use Ice Shard!"Dawn ordered.
Mamoswine unleashed Ice Shard towards Cyndaquil's Flame Wheel.
"Do it!"Dawn ordered.
This caused the two to pull off the combination perfectly, making Ursula to lose nearly a quarter of her points.
"Alright!"Dawn remarked. "That is a perfect flame ice!"
"Incredible!"Marian stated. "Cyndaquil's Flame Wheel is actually inside the Ice Shard! Shining in a dazzling light! Absolutely beautiful!"
"No way!"Ursula said in shock.
Ash, Denise and Brock praise Dawn's comeback move.
"Dawn, can still win this!"Ash chuckled.
"A perfect Flame Ice and appearing in the nick of time."Brock exclaimed.
"Go, Dawn!"Denise cheered, moving up her pom-poms. "Go! Go!"
Vaporeon, Combusken, Prinplup and Pikachu cheered at Dawn and her two Pokémon.
"Cyndaquil, go!"Dawn encouraged.
Cyndaquil shoots fire and launched itself forward faster, managing to smash directly into Plusle and Minun, who were thrown into the air.
"Plusle!"Ursula called out. "Minun!"
The screen showed that Ursula's points dropped to 1/2 of her original value.
"Quick, Plusle and Minun!"Ursula ordered. "Use Spark in the air!"
"Now Cyndaquil use Smoke Screen!"Dawn ordered.
Cyndaquil used Smoke Screen to break Plusle and Minun's combination.
Plusle and Minun hit the ground as Denise and the others continued cheering at their friends.
"Plusle and Minun!"Ursula shouted. "Stay strong!"
"Mamoswine, Hidden Power!"Dawn ordered.
Mamoswine used Hidden Power on Plusle, launching it backward.
"Cyndaquil use Swift!"Dawn ordered.
Cyndaquil used Swift on Minun, scoring another direct hit.
"We're not finished yet!"Ursula retorted. "Use Spark!"
"Here they come!"Dawn warned.
The Cheering Pokémon start to charge up for a double Spark, but time runs out before they can execute the attack.

"Time's up!"Marian declared. "And the Winner of the Daybreak Contest is…"
As everyone looked at the scoreboard, Dawn's comeback has been achieved: Ursula only has 1/4th of her points remaining while Dawn still has 3/8ths left.
Then Dawn's face appeared on the scoreboard.
"It's Dawn!"Marian announced. "Our champion managed to pull off an brilliant and outstanding double performance victory!"
The crowd cheered loudly at Dawn as she becomes overjoyed before going over to Mamoswine and Cyndaquil.
"We won!"Dawn cheered happily, smiling at her two Pokémon. "Mamoswine! Cyndaquil! We've won! Thank you so much!"
Ash, Denise and the other Pokémon cheered at Dawn's victory while Brock smiled proudly.
"Dawn!"Ash remarked. "You did it!"
"Yes! That's my twin!"Denise cheered proudly. "She won her fifth ribbon at last!"
Dawn hugged Mamoswine and Cyndaquil at their victory.
"Thanks to the both of you, I was confident enough for my double performance!"Dawn giggled. "And I don't even care if someone calls me, Dee-Dee!"
Ursula picked up Plusle and Minun from the ground to comfort them over their loss.
"Oh, Plusle and Minun. You two are the best."Ursula cooed and glared at Dawn. "Once again, she made the time limit work for her."
Dawn and her two Pokémon glanced at Ursula, who turned her back on them with an annoyed glare.
Dawn, Mamoswine and Cyndaquil were then presented the Daybreak Contest Ribbon by Mr. Contesta.
"And now the judge Mr Contesta will present Dawn with the beautiful Daybreak Contest for her great performance today."Marian announced.
Dawn picked up the Daybreak Ribbon as Mr. Contesta congratulated her on earning her fifth Ribbon.
"Dawn, I understand this is your fifth ribbon?"Mr Contesta assumed.
Dawn smiled. "Yeah."
"That means the Grand Festival is your next stop and we'll all see you there."Mr Contesta informed.
"Thank you so much! I can't wait!"Dawn thanked and walked away. "No need to worry! I got the Daybreak Ribbon and it's all mine!"
Dawn rose up the Daybreak Ribbon up high while Mamoswine and Cyndaquil cheered at their victory while the crowd cheered at them.
"That brings this year's exciting Daybreak Town Contest to a close!"Marian informed. "Thank you so much for coming! And remember until then as always, we'll see you next time!"
In the Changing Room...
As Dawn began to change out of her clothes in the dressing room, Ursula walked in with an angry look on her face.
"Ursula, hi."Dawn responded.
"I let you win this time, but you or your sister won't be so lucky in the Grand Festival!"Ursula warned.
Dawn nodded. "Okay…"
Jessilina then walked in and mocked Ursula, saying that she will be the winner.
"Oh yeah? Speak for yourself!"Jessilina sneered. "Because yours truly will be the grand winner!"
"You've gotta be kidding, Jessilina!"Ursula laughed. "I'll be the grand winner!"
"No!"Jessilina argued. "I will!"
"I will!"Ursula snapped.
Ursula and Jessilina continued arguing with each other, much to Dawn's embarrassment.
Later that Evening…
Dawn headed out with Prinplup after getting dressed up in her travelling clothes.
"Congratulations, Dawn."Denise remarked joyfully as she hugged Dawn. "You finally won your fifth ribbon."
"Combusken."Combusken remarked.
"Thanks, Dennie."Dawn thanked and took out her fifth ribbon. "This ribbon is the best of all."
"Prinplup."Prinplup chirped.
"Yeah."Ash agreed with a smile. "It sure is."
"Pika."Pikachu agreed.
"Your Flame Ice was great."Brock added. "Perfect timing. It sure will come in pretty handy in the Grand Festival."
"Thanks. I have caught up with Zoey as well."Dawn chuckled and looked at Prinplup. "Right, Prinplup?"
Prinplup smiled. "Prinplup."
"Now it's your turns, Ash and Denise."Dawn informed. "For you both to win at the Sunnyshore City Gym. Are you both ready for that?"
"Yeah."Ash agreed confidently. "Our eighth badge is waiting for us over there."
"And we are going to train hard to make sure that we will win it!"Denise stated.
Combusken and Pikachu cheered in victory, already looking forward for their next gym battle.
