Chapter 159: With the Easiest of Grace!
Ash and his friends leave a large forest to find themselves in a huge, grassy field.
Both Dawn and Denise were awestruck by the sight of the area.
"Whoa!"Dawn remarked."It's gigantic!"
"It is, sis."Denise agreed with a nod."Also a good spot to do some serious training."
Combusken nodded."Combusken."
Ash smiled at Pikachu.
"We should do some training too, Pikachu."Ash suggested.
Pikachu nodded. "Pikachu."
"I agree with you too, Dennie."Dawn replied and took out the Poké Ball that contained Togekiss inside."I wanted to train with Togekiss. So, here we go."
"Prinplup."Prinplup chirped.
Brock looked at the sky.
"These wide open spaces are perfect to train with Flying Type Pokémon like Togekiss and just in time for the Grand Festival."Brock remarked.
Denise brought her attention on Dawn.
"In that case, Dawn, how about we have a battle?"Denise requested with a smirk."We are both competing in the Grand Festival."
"Great idea."Dawn answered.
Ash, Pikachu, Brock, Prinplup and Combusken sat down near a small log to watch and Denise have their battle in the open field.
With the gang nearing Lake Valor and the Sinnoh Grand Festival soon to start, Dawn was eager to start getting to know her new partner.
"Okay, Togekiss!"Dawn remarked and threw out her Poké Ball."Go!"
Dawn's Poké Ball opened causing Togekiss to come out.
"Togekiss!"
Togekiss flew down to the ground and gives a bow to her companions.
Prinplup went over to Togekiss causing the Jubilee Pokémon to greet him.
Dawn smiled at seeing her new Pokémon getting along with her Starter Pokémon.
"That's so sweet."Dawn giggled.
"Alright, Gardevoir!"Denise insisted and tossed her Poké Ball forward."Out you come!"
Denise's Poké Ball burst open and Gardevoir appeared in the field.
"Gardevoir!"
Denise looked at Gardevoir.
"Gardevoir, get ready."Denise informed."This will be our special training before the Grand Festival. Let's make sure to do our very best."
"Gardevoir."Gardevoir responded gently.
Dawn smiled at Togekiss.
"Now let's work hard Togekiss."Dawn encouraged and rose her fist up in excitement."Since I want you to look your best at the Grand Festival."
"Togekiss."Togekiss said kindly while raising up her wings.
"This is ought be a great battle."Brock stated."Wouldn't you agree, Ash?"
"You bet, Brock."Ash remarked.
Pikachu, Prinplup and Combusken all cheered in agreement.
"Now then, Gardevoir, use Ice Punch!"Denise ordered.
Gardevoir rushed toward Togekiss as her arm began icy blue.
"Togekiss, use Sky Attack!"Dawn ordered.
Togekiss flew up into the air and starts to glow, but instead of coming straight back down to strike, she instead does a somersault.
This startled Dawn and caused her to hesitate with her commands.
"Whoa."Dawn said."What's with the sky dancing?"
Denise looked at Togekiss in confusion.
"I have no idea."Denise replied.
Denise then notice Togekiss going down and heading towards Gardevoir.
"Dodge it, Gardevoir!"Denise ordered.
Gardevoir does a graceful spin to dodge from being hit by Togekiss' Sky Attack.
"That Sky Attack looked really powerful."Brock complemented.
"Yeah, but why did Togekiss focus so much on dancing first before attacking directly?"Ash questioned with an unsure look.
"Pika."Pikachu responded.
"Prinplup."Prinplup chirped.
"Combusken."Combusken answered.
Togekiss then flew into the air and started to spin around gracefully.
"Gardevoir, use Magical Leaf!"Denise ordered.
Gardevoir twirled around and unleashed Magical Leaf towards Togekiss.
"Heads up, Dawn!"Brock warned.
"Prinplup prinplup!"Prinplup protested.
Dawn, however, wasn't used to this kind of battling, having never owned a Flying-type Pokémon before.
"I know, but this is my first time with a Flying Type."Dawn stated and looked up in the sky."Togekiss, dodge!"
Luckily, Togekiss was able to avoid Gardevoir's Magical Leaf much to Dawn's relief.
"Togekiss did it!"Dawn remarked."Well, she must've got her skills from Salvia's training."
"Hey, sis! Focus!"Denise called out."We're in the middle of the battle!"
"Oh, right! Sorry, Dennie!"Dawn apologised with a sheepish smile and got serious."Togekiss, use Aura Sphere!"
Instead of immediately firing Aura Sphere, Togekiss starts to twirl around again.
"What are you doing?! Come on, Togekiss!"Dawn complained."Hurry up, please!"
Denise sweat dropped at seeing Togekiss showing off.
"Togekiss sure loves dancing."Denise grumbled.
Gardevoir sighed."Gardevoir."
Denise then gives Gardevoir her next order.
"Gardevoir, use Trick Room!"Denise ordered.
Gardevoir's eyes glowed cyan blue and a large light blue rectangle with light blue transparent walls and ceiling appears around the battlefield.
Then, the light blue glow fades, and the walls and ceiling become invisible.
Togekiss finally started forming Aura Sphere with her wings.
"Hurry up, Togekiss!"Dawn protested."You're so slow!"
But rather than using Aura Sphere against Gardevoir, Togekiss instead starts to show off her moves with it.
"Dodge again, Gardevoir!"Denise ordered.
Gardevoir gracefully went out of the way to avoid being hit by Togekiss' Aura Sphere.
"Looks like we missed again."Dawn said sadly.
"You got it, Gardevoir!"Denise praised.
Gardevoir smiled."Gardevoir."
Dawn became more worried upon seeing Togekiss still flying gracefully.
"With all that prancing around, Togekiss gave Gardevoir the opportunity to dodge the whole time."Brock complemented.
"What do I do?"Dawn asked.
"Okay, Gardevoir, use Psychic!"Denise ordered.
Gardevoir's eyes glowed as she began to use Psychic to pause Togekiss from flying.
The Embrace Pokémon then moved her hand to send the Jubilee Pokémon crash into the field.
"Togekiss!"Dawn cried out.
Togekiss groaned in pain as she slowly got up from the ground.
"Quick, Togekiss!"Dawn insisted."Use Air Slash!"
Togekiss flew into the sky again and was expected to use Air Slash, but this was followed by more airborne dancing.
"Not again!"Dawn whined.
Togekiss sent Air Slash towards Gardevoir, only for the Psychic Pokémon to move out the way from being hit.
Denise groaned as she slightly face palmed.
"We are not getting anywhere, if we just keep dodging and barely give attacks."Denise retorted and glanced at Dawn."Hey, sis! How about we call this battle off?"
"I guess so."Dawn answered.
Togekiss flew back down to return to her Trainer.
Denise took out her Poké Ball to return Gardevoir inside it.
"Gardevoir, you were amazing."Denise chuckled."Return."
Denise returned Gardevoir back in her Poké Ball.
Brock, Ash, Pikachu, Prinplup and Combusken went up to Dawn, Denise and Togekiss.
"You were something, Togekiss."Ash remarked.
"Kiss."Togekiss said with a bow.
Later, Pikachu, Prinplup, Combusken and Togekiss were eating while their Trainers also have lunch.
Dawn let out a sigh since she was still worried about Togekiss.
Denise, Ash and Brock looked at Dawn.
"What's wrong, Dawn?"Denise asked.
Dawn watched as Togekiss wiped Prinplup's mouth with her wing.
"I'm glad to see that Togekiss is getting along with Prinplup."Dawn exclaimed."But I'm thinking I don't really understand Togekiss all that well."
"Togekiss was Princess Salvia's Pokémon before she became your own, sis."Denise reminded."It's just she will need a little bit more experience in battle since she very impressive for an Appeal Round."
"I'll tell you, Dawn."Ash declared."Togekiss sure impressed me too."
Dawn looked at Denise.
"I guess you're right, Dennie."Dawn answered and looked down with a troubled look."But I'm still confused."
"I know what you mean, Dawn."Brock stated and folded his arms."Togekiss did that loop just before thet Sky Attack. It took a long time before the Aura Sphere as well."
Brock looked at Ash and Denise.
"It was like Togekiss was trying to look good before launching all those attacks."Brock commented.
"That's true, Brock."Denise answered with a nod."Togekiss performed her moves like she was performing an Appeal."
"Just like she was in a Contest."Ash chuckled.
Dawn, Denise, Ash and Brock watched at Togekiss took off into the sky.
"With all that beautiful flying, there's no doubt in my mind that Togekiss will do really well in the First Round in the Performance Stage."Dawn explained and looked down."But after that…who knows?"
"I see your point, sis."Denise admitted."Togekiss is very elegant while flying and should do well while performing, but battling will be difficult if there is a delay between you commanding a move and Togekiss using it."
Dawn nodded in agreement.
"But look at it another way; you and Togekiss are new to each other."Brock complemented."Once you're communicating better, I'm sure everything will turn out just fine."
Dawn still remained very worried despite knowing what her twin sister and Brock were saying was true.
"Brock, I sure hope you're right."Dawn responded.
"Hey, don't worry."Ash assured confidently."You got plenty of time to make it all square it away."
"Just be positive and have patience, sis."Denise insisted kindly."Then everything between you and Togekiss will turn out alright before you even realise."
Ash nodded. "Yeah."
"Denise is right."Brock agreed.
Dawn smiled at Denise, Ash and Brock.
"Okay."Dawn answered.
Sometime after finishing lunch, Dawn, Denise, Ash and Brock watched with Prinplup and Combusken as Togekiss offered Pikachu a ride on her back while she flew in the sky.
"They sure having a good time."Ash remarked.
"Togekiss is really great in taking care of the little ones."Brock commented.
"You said it."Denise chuckled.
"Togekiss!"Dawn called out."Time to come down soon, okay?"
Togekiss heard Dawn's order and gracefully headed down causing Pikachu to get off her back.
Pikachu suddenly tripped causing Ash to bent down and check on him.
"Pikachu, are you alright?"Ash asked.
"Pika."Pikachu replied.
Togekiss then helped Pikachu off the ground before using her wings to wipe off the dust on his fur.
Pikachu smiled at Togekiss.
"Pika."Pikachu responded.
"Thanks, Togekiss."Ash thanked.
"Time for more training."Dawn insisted.
Togekiss smiled at her Trainer.
"Toge."Togekiss answered with a graceful bow.
Togekiss then headed off into the sky to fly gracefully once more.
"That's it!"Brock said in realisation.
Dawn, Denise and Ash looked at Brock.
"What is it, Brock?"Denise asked.
"Like you said before, Denise, Togekiss was raised by Princess Salvia."Brock exclaimed."Which is why it is second natured to show off that grace. In a battle situation, it may look like unnecessary movement, but it is simply part of Togekiss' upbringing."
"Wow."Ash complemented."So that explains why working with Togekiss has been such a difficult thing for Dawn."
"Yeah."Dawn replied and looked down with an unsure look."But I'll never be able to win a battle like this."
Togekiss then returned to the group and bowed at them.
"Now, Togekiss, please."Dawn spoke up."You know speed and time are crucial at a battle, right?"
Togekiss smiled at her Trainer.
"Togekiss togo."Togekiss remarked.
Dawn remained unsure causing Brock, Ash and Denise to look at her.
"Dawn, just train hard."Ash insisted.
"Remember, Dawn."Denise informed with a smile."Impatience gets you no where in life."
"No need to worry."Brock chuckled.
Pikachu, Prinplup and Combusken smiled at Dawn.
"Pika pika."Pikachu agreed.
"Prinplup."Prinplup chirped.
"Combusken."Combusken remarked.
Dawn smiled confidently at her sister and friends' words.
"You guys are right."Dawn responded."Let's try one more time!"
"Toge!"Togekiss cheered.
Suddenly, something was sent flying before crash-landing right in front of Ash and the others.
"What was that?!"Ash demanded.
The dust cleared away, revealing the ones that crash landed were Team Rocket.
"Team Rocket!"Ash, Dawn, Denise and Brock said in unison.
Jessie whispered to James and Meowth.
"We just drilled ourselves some twerp sight, brainiac."Jessie retorted.
"How am I supposed to aim that wash out?"Meowth questioned.
"Curses!"James complained."No shovel means no shovelling!"
"Stop complaining!"Jessie snapped."It's time for real messing!"
"What the heck do you creeps want?!"Denise scowled.
Team Rocket began reciting their motto.
"We want the world! And we wanted now!"
"Twerpish interference, we won't allow!"
"On the Wind!"
"Past the Stars!"
"Bing bang, pow!"
"Bringing chaos in a brick neck of pace!"
"Dashing hope and putting fear in its place!"
"A rose by any other name just as sweet!"
"When everything is worse, our work is complete!"
"Jessie!"
"And James!"
"Meowth! Now that's a name!"
"Putting the do gooders in their place!"
"Because we're Team Rocket!"
"And we're in your face!"
"Wobbuffet!"
Jessie smirked evilly at Dawn.
"Look, twerpette!"Jessie sneered."I know you're at wits end! Prepare to have your Togekiss taken off your pointless hands!"
Ash, Dawn, Denise and Brock were surprised at Dawn's declaration.
"What she say?"Dawn asked.
"Looks like Team Rocket is after your Togekiss!"Denise retorted.
"Well you can forget it!"Ash snapped.
"As if that will happen!"Jessie retorted and threw out her Poké Ball."Seviper, enlightened them!"
Jessie's Poké Ball opened causing Seviper to come out.
"Seviper!"
"Carnivine, you too!"James encouraged.
Carnivine came out of James' Poké Ball, only for him to come out and start biting his Trainer's head.
"Not biting!"James complained."Enlighten!"
"Seviper, Poison Tail!"Jessie ordered.
Seviper rushed forward as the end of her tail started glowing purple.
"Carnivine, Vine Whip!"James ordered.
Carnivine made his vines grow longer to attack using Vine Whip.
The two attacks head for Togekiss.
"Togekiss, get out of there!"Dawn ordered.
Togekiss escaped by flying into the air to avoid being hit by Seviper and Carnivine's attacks.
"Your twerpish plans fall on death ears!"Jessie scowled and took out her second Poké Ball."Yanmega, go after Togekiss!"
Jessie's Poké Ball opened causing Yanmega to come out.
"Yanmega!"
The Ogre Darner Pokémon quickly catches up to Togekiss.
Ash looked at Denise.
"Dennie, Dawn, you two help Togekiss!"Ash insisted."Me and Brock will take care of the rest!"
"Right!"Dawn and Denise answered in unison.
Dawn and Denise head off to help Togekiss.
"Sudowoodo!"Brock called out as he took out his own Poké Ball."Let's go!"
Brock's Poké Ball opened and Sudowoodo came out.
"Sudowoodo!"
"Use Double-Edge!"Brock ordered.
Sudowoodo used Double-Edge to attack Carnivine.
"Quick, Pikachu, use Thunderbolt!"Ash ordered.
Pikachu tried to use Thunderbolt against Seviper, only for him to dodge his attack.
Denise glared at seeing Yanmega confront Togekiss.
"As if I'll let you take what belongs to my sister!"Denise retorted and took out her Poké Ball."Flygon, go!"
Denise's Poké Ball opened causing Flygon to come out.
"Flygon!"
Togekiss and Flygon face off against Yanmega, as Dawn and Denise do with Jessie.
"Togekiss, Sky Attack, now!"Dawn ordered.
Togekiss powered up, but instead of immediately striking Yanmega with Sky Attack, she yet again started to fly around, showing off.
"Not again!"Denise scowled.
"Togekiss, there's no for you to do that!"Dawn shouted."So stop!"
Togekiss heard Dawn's sentence and starts flying straight.
"Go ahead, Yanmega!"Jessie cackled."Show them how its done!"
Yanmega unleashed a Sonic Boom towards Togekiss.
"No, you don't!"Denise snapped."Flygon, use Sandstorm!"
Flygon unleashed Sandstorm to block Yanmega's view before he and Togekiss went out of the way from being hit by the Sonic Boom.
"Yanmega, hit them with Silver Wind!"Jessie ordered.
Yanmega unleashed Silver Wind towards Flygon and Togekiss.
"Dodge it!"Dawn and Denise answered in unison.
Apparently now recognising that this battle was not a Contest Battle, Togekiss started quickly dodging the powerful attack with Flygon.
"Circle around!"Dawn and Denise instructed.
Both Togekiss and Flygon follow their Trainers' instruction to circle back and after strafing the ground, the duo quickly rises up and get to a higher altitude above Yanmega.
"Use Aura Sphere!"Dawn ordered.
Togekiss immediately charges downward toward Yanmega using Aura Sphere and spinning while rapidly firing the powerful move.
"Now, Yanmega use Steel Wing!"Jessie ordered.
"Now, Yanmega, use Steel Wing!"Jessie ordered.
Yanmega starts to spin around quickly while flying upward toward Togekiss, causing Steel Wing to easily deflect Aura Sphere.
Dawn and Jessie then realise that their Pokémon were heading for a midair collision.
"Look out!"Dawn and Jessie called out.
Both Togekiss and Yanmega dodge; barely missing each other.
"Our turn!"Denise complemented."Flygon, use Screech!"
Flygon unleashed Screech, hitting Yanmega directly.
"Impudent twerpette!"Jessie insulted."Yanmega, use Steel Wing!"
Yanmega unleashed her Steel Wing attack.
"Dodge it, Flygon!"Denise ordered.
Flygon spun around gracefully to dodge Yanmega's Steel Wing.
This gives Dawn an idea of how to battle with Togekiss.
"That's it!"Dawn thought in realisation.
"Let's wrap this up!"Jessie sneered."Yanmega, end the moment with Sonic Boom!"
Yanmega unleashed Sonic Boom towards her two opponents.
"Togekiss, do your dance!"Dawn ordered.
"Follow suite, Flygon!"Denise insisted.
Both Togekiss and Flygon able to twirl out of the way of Sonic Boom, confusing Jessie.
"What is this?!"Jessie complained and glanced at Yanmega."Sonc Boom! Instance play!"
Yanmega started to fire various Sonic Booms quickly at Togekiss and Flygon.
"Togekiss/Flygon!"Dawn and Denise called out."Style it with grace!"
Both Togekiss and Flygon avoided the Sonic Booms with beauty, much to everyone's surprise.
"Check it out!"Ash remarked.
Jessie got captivated by Togekiss and Flygon's moves.
"Aw, the beauty!"Jessie said in awe."It's like a ballet in the sky!"
Jessie then frowned and got serious.
"But my soul purpose is to catch Togekiss and defeat that annoying twerpette's Flygon!"Jessie retorted."Quick, Yanmega! Use Sonic Boom once more!"
Then came repeated streams of Sonic Booms from Yanmega.
"Dodge them and style with grace!"Dawn and Denise ordered in unison.
Both Togekiss and Flygon kept dodging their foe's attacks with style.
This caused Jessie to become more angry.
Jessie angrily tells Yanmega to finish Togekiss with Silver Wind.
"Style with grace?!"Jessie growled and gave Yanmega her next order."Yanmega, use Silver Wind! Right now!"
Yanmega unleashed Silver Wind.
"Togekiss/Flygon, ride the wind!"Dawn and Denise encouraged.
Both Togekiss and Flygon strike back by riding the Silver Wind and both make a direct line for Yanmega, to both Yanmega and Jessie's horror.
Denise smirked at Dawn.
"Shall we, Dawn?"Denise asked.
"You bet, Dennie!"Dawn answered and looked at Togekiss."Use Air Slash with grace!"
Togekiss hits Yanmega with Air Slash while dancing as she fires several times, each attack coming from a different angle and direction.
"Fly like the wind?!"Jessie shrieked.
Although Yanmega was able to dodge the first couple, the third Air Slash of Togekiss scores a critical hit.
"That's our cue!"Denise declared."Flygon, use Dragon Pulse!"
Flygon unleashes Dragon Pulse, sending Yanmega to the ground and knocking her out.
"You've got to be kidding me!"Jessie complained.
Togekiss and Flygon cheered at their victory as Combusken smiled at his flying friends for their success.
"Alright, return!"Jessie ordered.
Jessie returned Yanmega in her Poké Ball.
"Jessie!"James called out.
Jessie turned around, just in time to see James and Meowth carrying Seviper and Carnivine that have been defeated by Pikachu and Sudowoodo.
"Man, those twerps beat the pants off of us!"Meowth retorted."And we don't even wear pants!"
Brock, Ash, Sudowoodo and Pikachu chased after James and Jessie.
"Come back, you two!"Ash demanded.
Meowth glared at Ash.
"Hey!"Meowth retorted."I guess it's time for Plan C!"
When the trio reunites, Meowth announces a backup plan, and
Seviper uses Haze to distract Ash and Brock while mecha-hands grabbed Pikachu and Prinplup.
"Pikachu!"Ash shouted.
"No, Prinplup!"Brock yelled out.
The balloon starts to rise with Team Rocket aboard.
"Good attempt, Meowth!"James praised.
"And the velvet gloves are a nice touch."Jessie remarked.
"Like I always say, 'Be prepared for a perfect getaway!'"Meowth laughed.
James frowned."Perhaps, this should be our plan from the beginning."
"Lighten up and have fun."Jessie insisted.
"Yeah."Meowth agreed."At least, we get Pikachu and Prinplup."
Ash, Dawn, Denise, Combusken and Brock rushed forward as they watched Team Rocket take off in their balloon.
"Pikachu!"Ash called out.
"Prinplup!"Dawn shouted.
Pikachu and Prinplup called out to their Trainers.
However, before the evil trio can escape, Togekiss uses Sky Attack to free the two Pokémon and then catches them on her back.
"Togekiss!"Dawn remarked in joy.
Team Rocket decides to cut their losses and just make their escape.
"Horrors!"James scowled.
"Let's scram!"Meowth insisted.
"Not so fast!"Ash said with a smirk."Pikachu, Thunderbolt let's go!"
"Prinplup, use Bubble Beam and, Togekiss, use Aura Sphere!"Dawn ordered.
"Combusken, use Ember and, Flygon, use Dragon Pulse!"Denise ordered.
But Pikachu, Prinplup, Togekiss, Combusken and Flygon use Thunderbolt, Bubble Beam, Aura Sphere, Ember and Dragon Pulse to destroy the balloon and send Team Rocket blasting off.
"Our plans have been foiled again!"James complained.
"Our sky dancing is fluky, but flying!"Jessie retorted.
"I guess being a klutz has something to do with it!"Meowth assumed.
"Wobbuffet!"Wobbuffet agreed.
"WE'RE BLASTING OFF AGAIN!"Team Rocket screamed and disappeared in the sky.
Togekiss delivers Pikachu and Prinplup to their Trainers, who congratulate them on a job well done.
"Awesome!"Ash praised."Great job, Pikachu!"
Pikachu smiled."Pika!"
"Prinplup and Togekiss, you guys were amazing too."Dawn remarked.
"Prinplup."Prinplup chirped.
"Kiss."Togekiss said with a bow.
Denise looked at Combusken and Flygon.
"Same goes for you two as well, Combusken and Flygon."Denise chuckled.
Combusken and Flygon smiled at their Trainer.
Later that day, the sun started setting for the evening.
"With that quick Air Slash and Togekiss's Sky Dancing, Yanmega couldn't dodge it."Brock remarked."So when did you figure all this out?"
Dawn smiled at Denise.
"I got it during the battle and following your advice, Dennie."Dawn stated kindly."You helped me come with an idea on how to use Togekiss' extra graceful moves since they were really meant for my eyes."
"Aw, thank you, sis."Denise chuckled."It was really impressive how we beat Jessie's Yanmega together."
Flygon smiled in agreement.
"So that's how it happened."Brock responded.
Dawn brought her attention on Togekiss.
"Togekiss has a unique way of doing things."Dawn replied."But the problem was I couldn't see until now. So there's need to worry!"
"You two make a great team for sure."Ash stated."Same with you and Flygon, Dennie."
"Pika!"Pikachu agreed.
"Prinplup."Prinplup chirped.
"Combusken."Combusken remarked.
"And the timing couldn't better since its off to the Grand Festival."Brock declared.
"Yep."Denise answered with a brave smile."And we'll make sure to do our best, right, Dawn?"
"Yeah!"Dawn agreed.
Togekiss and Flygon then set off flying in the sky.
Soon, the group set off and continued their return journey to Lake Valor.
Next chapter will be 'Last Call, First Round!' meaning the beginning of the Grand Festival!
