Albus Dumbledore was in a snit as he read the latest report by the guards posted around Privet Drive before dumping it on the table next to the newspapers that had piled up for the week. The topmost page held the headline that he hated the most.
Harry Potter Speaks Out!
Dumbledore: Demented or hidden war-monger?
The article essentially talked about how the boy came forward to the Daily Prophet after four days of the newspaper smearing his name to have an interview regarding the rumours surrounding the fourth year and the tumultuous tournament. With aid from two Aurors, Amelia Bones and selected witnesses for authentication, Harry gave a vow to answer truthfully before explaining what had happened, and more importantly, tell the populace that he never once mentioned anything about Voldemort's resurrection, and that it was all hearsay from Dumbledore. A fact that he proved with Veritaserum and Pensieve memories which he was allowed to grant because the tournament had emancipated him. The final bit of the article listed out questions on why Dumbledore was intent on dragging Harry's name into the mud by claiming the boy told him about Voldemort when he was taken straight to the hospital and not asked once by the Aurors.
"Damn that boy!" Dumbledore sat down in his chair harder than he thought and cupped his face. This was not what he had in mind when dealing with the war with Voldemort, and that boy was ruining it with his rebellious behaviour.
~ooOOoo~
His plans started getting derailed around the summer before Harry's third year. The boy had gone to the Leaky Cauldron after blowing up his aunt and somewhere along the line found out his heritage through the goblins. In the 3 weeks he was at the Leaky Cauldron, he got himself healed up and conducting himself in a pure-blood manner that had Molly sending him a report a day before departure to Hogwarts of how much more aware he was of his place in the wizarding world, and that he had changed all the security of the vaults supposedly on some new policy changes by Gringotts. Dumbledore had some doubts on that given the letter he got the day before that his rather limited access to Harry's trust vault was removed and they had also retrieved the amount that was meant to be for his upkeep but used elsewhere.
The start of the year began with Dementors entering the train and affecting Harry as badly as he thought, but the retaliation in the form of fire spells was not expected. Then there was the boy's request to change his electives during the summer, a request Dumbledore denied since it was necessary for Harry to believe in prophecies and he did not need the boy to know anything too useful for his plans. The boy had dared to defy him by not going to the Divination class, instead heading to Arithmancy and Ancient Runes for his choices. When Dumbledore tried to force him back, the boy pointed out the other students allowed to change along with allowing Hermione Granger to take up all electives despite the impossibility of being in two different places at once. He even got Augusta Longbottom who was on the school board to let him do so since it was ultimately his choice to do the subjects and not Dumbledore's despite the claims of him being the magical guardian for Harry.
Dumbledore did not like the gleam in their eyes when he had claimed that, but at the time he was more miffed at the fact he had to let Harry have that minor victory. He won't admit that he was petty enough to include a condition that if he failed those subjects, he would be forced back into Divination and Care of Magical Creatures.
The boy had then spent the year excelling with his subjects and getting ahead of the pack, something the other professors were happy to note outside of Severus's usual nitpicking, and even the latter was reluctant to admit that a Potter was getting better in Potions to the point that he was forced to grade him higher, but not an Outstanding. Hermione Granger did not like that but as the professors had already started a new method of testing students by going out of order instead of following the textbook, she could not show that she was the best student, nor can she help to keep Harry under control by being the know-it-all. Ronald Weasley tried to keep the boy distracted and lazy, but with Harry in different electives from him, he could only do so during regular hours and even then the Potter brat was not toeing the line as he should.
Remus Lupin was brought in to deal with Sirius and to act as the link for the boy to connect with while in capacity of a professor for the DADA position, but Harry rebuffed him after heavy questioning that showed his loyalty towards Dumbledore and made it clear that Lupin had lost all rights to be his pseudo uncle. It did not help that the werewolf was pathetic even by Dumbledore's standards that had the wolf listening to his every word. He had hoped the Dementors attacking him on the Quidditch Pitch would direct the boy to Lupin for the Patronus Charm and open up another route of information, but the boy went to Filius instead for the training, and he got it right by the first Quidditch Match when the Dementors came to feed only to be repelled by his patronus in the form of an eagle.
Another point of contention was the boy reaching out to other students, such as Neville Longbottom and Luna Lovegood, and crossing the house boundaries to talk with those Dumbledore did not want him to associate with, such as Susan Bones and Daphne Greengrass. He even arranged for the goblins to deal with the Basilisk's corpse and compensate some of the victims with the sales while keeping the majority of the sales and materials locked up. Severus was most displeased at the knowledge of all those materials kept away from him, but the boy refused to hand them over out of childish spite.
They barely got to Christmas when Harry caught Peter Pettigrew and delivered him to Amelia Bones personally. The boy then proceeded to leave Hogwarts for the holidays for the first time, and when he got Minerva to try and stop him, the boy made it clear that they had no right to do so since he was heading back to the muggle world. Trying to claim magical guardianship brought back that weird gleam before he said something to Minerva that had her blanching before letting him go. When asked, she revealed that Harry knew about her role in placing him with the Dursleys, and given what she did or did not do the past two years, he was not going to bother listening to her excuses or words.
That was not good for his plans if the boy knew about it. That would mean Harry knew about his own role in his placement. At least he would not know about the prophecy.
At least, that was what Dumbledore was hoping.
It said something about the matter that Dumbledore was happy Peter had managed to escape Ministry custody before being transferred to Azkaban, courtesy of certain people wanting to keep their business private, thus having Cornelius insist on the Dementors sticking around. That also allowed Dumbledore to work on possible plans if the boy attempted to leave his scope of control, something that could not be allowed to happen at all costs.
The boy continued with his work studies and defying his implied rules, and it was clear to many that he held Minerva in deep contempt, not only for her role in his placement with the Dursleys, but her attitude and actions during the first two years of Hogwarts. He was respectful to a point but when she tried to enforce his rules, he would show his understanding of the rules and how she was breaking them just so she could mess with him to the point that he had prepared a list of violations ready to be sent to the board of directors.
His friendship with Hagrid was still there but diminished, and he was also very careful with his words around the giant given the latter's loose lips. Based on one evening of questioning with Dumbledore, Harry knew that Hagrid was involved to some extent.
The boy ended up doing the usual end of year trials by capturing Pettigrew again while fending off multiple Dementors, a werewolf and a deranged Sirius Black. The boy still managed to accomplish it and get Pettigrew to Amelia Bones who arrived on his call. With both him and Sirius in her custody, she made sure both were not moving anywhere and she was going to get answers one way or another. Cornelius tried to keep this under a Dementor's cloak and Kiss, but the woman bouldarised him and did an emergency trial to get Sirius exonerated along with Peter having his credentials removed and sent to the same prison cell as Sirius.
The year ended with the boy leaving for another location shortly after arriving at the Dursleys, and not even Fawkes could tell where he was. Sirius was not contactable at the moment since he was under observation by Amelia, and his junior spies were not getting any letters from him. The few properties left of the Potters had also become Unplottable which made it harder for him to determine his whereabouts. Fawkes would not take him to wherever Harry was, and his repeated attempts had the bloody bird flying away to Merlin knows where. And if that was not enough, barely a week after his disappearance, Dumbledore had to read in the papers of Harry doing his OWLs for Transfiguration and Charms along with other subjects not taught at Hogwarts.
That boy was getting out of hand, he needed to be controlled!
~ooOOoo~
The fourth year started with the news of the boy having achieved Outstandings for his OWLs regarding certain subjects, which was a spark to the tempers of Weasley and Granger, the former being angry at the thought his meal ticket was getting away while the latter was angry at his intellect. Everyone was there to see the breakdown of the Golden Trio, only for Harry to calmly tear down their insecurities before moving on to Luna and Neville. The end result was Weasley and Granger looking like jealous idiots who could not fathom the thought that their once companion/spy subject had accomplished so much without their notice.
The Goblet of Fire should have provided Dumbledore the means to drive a wedge between Harry and the school, but the boy had given a comprehensive oath stating he had never approached the goblet with the intent to enter, nor did he ask anyone to do so, and he had no idea, before firing off a Patronus carrying the message to Amelia for aid. Dumbledore was unable to stop that and ended up having her and the Aurors coming in with scowls on their faces.
That oath cut off any momentum of harassment at the knees and made it harder to target him, especially when Harry gave the permission for Amelia to administer Veriterserum to help prove his oath. At least Weasley and Granger were on hand to start it up with his approval to put the boy in his place while ensuring that the boy had to go back to them or him for aid. Harry however made it clear that he would not be giving anyone a second chance to attack him like they did in second year and saw to it that the two along with a select few got caught in the act with a few bruises and hexes before sending them to the "proper" professors for their punishments. When Minerva tried to do the same to Harry with point deduction and detention, the boy did the unthinkable and tore off the house badge from his robes while declaring himself to have resigned from Gryffindor House before ripping into her verbally over her incompetence, all done in public view in the Great Hall, and then leaving the place in figurative chaos in his wake.
Harry having removed himself from Gryffindor and openly approving Diggory got the Hufflepuffs aiding the boy when dealing with the ex-house members, along with the Ravenclaws and some of the Slytherins. It also strengthened his ties with those he befriended the previous year, and that was not what Dumbledore wanted! It said something about the situation when Gryffindor became the new Slytherin in terms of being unpopular with the rest of the school and their international guests.
The only possible upside was Harry not getting support from the main heads other than Filius, but Professors Babbling and Sinistra were keeping strong contact with him and making it clear to the other heads that they were not standing by to watch him get attacked by them or their students.
The First Task may have made the warning from the professors moot with how Harry had gotten the egg with a mixture of spells and combat runes, and later dominated the Hungarian Horntail when the chain broke. Everyone laid witness to how the boy managed to ground the dragon with selective spells before forcing it to submit to him with flaming chains around it. With the amount of power being exuded and the manner he subdued the dragon, it did not take much for those who had antagonised to go out of their way to try and apologise or stay out of his way. The boy however did not forgive those who had bullied him for a second year and snubbed those who tried to apologise. Weasley and Granger could not get back into his circle of friends, not after how they had been behaving in the period between the name drawing and the First Task.
Dumbledore told Sirius about the tactics he used and the insubordination being displayed, to which Sirius apparently responded with a Howler sent to Harry. The boy shot a spell to keep it silenced and in stasis to read it in private, only to appear later in the afternoon with a blank expression showing the usage of Occlumency. It would be 2 days later when Dumbledore got a letter from Sirius begging for his aid as Harry somehow managed to declare the godparent ritual binding the two to be invalid and that boy had declared Sirius Black and Remus Lupin to be dead to him and traitors to the memories of his parents. Dumbledore had to sigh when he got the events that led to that, Sirius clearly was still the hothead, and this was now costing him more, damn it!
The second task was a problem since the boy made it clear that he would not save Ronald, Ginny or Hermione as they were considered dead to him. Dumbledore would have tried to insist on the Weasleys to attempt reconnecting them to Harry and to give the impression that he still cared for them, but even the idiot Bagman could tell that Harry was more likely to leave them to drown in the lake and to save another hostage instead just to spite them. So they had to use his date who was Daphne Greengrass, but that almost did not take hold when her father came along to make sure that they had permission from him and other parents while making sure the spells in question were the proper ones and to sufficient strength to last the time in the lake. Dumbledore cursed at the missed opportunity to cast other spells on the girl especially with Amelia watching over the process.
On the Second Task, Harry defied expectations again by pulling a Merlin, or a "Moses" based on what the muggleborns were shouting, by parting the lake in half to grant him and the champions enough of a footpath to get to their hostages before dropping the lake back without hurting the guards. That earned Harry more respect and some attention by the French competitor since her sister was her hostage. The boy merely stuck around long enough to check on Daphne and get her to her parents before disappearing again without getting the scores.
When the students were having their final exams for the year roughly a week before the third task, many did not expect Harry to appear to take the exams since he would have been granted an automatic grade for being in the tournament. None definitely expected him to take OWLs for his remaining subjects and three NEWTs for Transfiguration, Charms and Potions for that year, but he did take them with additional subjects, and because of the non-interference policy set for OWLs and NEWTs, no one could go near him during the exams, and the very second it ended, he would disappear without a trace. Dumbledore would try to delay the results if not cancel his exams completely, but Griselda Marchbanks was not a fan of him and would not let him interfere with the boy's results.
Dumbledore tried to get the boy to the family meet-up before the Third Task so that he would interact with Sirius Black, Remus Lupin and Molly Weasley in hopes of getting him back in control, but Harry told Minerva that he has no family and disappeared shortly after, making it a very awkward session where the foreign champions and parents got to see a Molly Howler in person as she ranted about Harry only to be silenced by an irate Cedric Diggory who proceeded to verbally tear strips into her, aided by an irate Fleur and stoic Victor. Fleur even walked up to Sirius and introduced her kicking strength to Sirius's nuts before walking away, huffing about needing a bath to clean her legs.
The Third Task came and the boy breezed through the maze and obstacles without stopping, reaching the cup and getting portrayed elsewhere as Dumbledore had predicted based on the situation. It was a few minutes later that Harry appeared with Peter Pettigrew bound in ropes. He kept demanding for Aurors despite Dumbledore's attempts to keep this private, and that got Amelia to check on the situation that resulted in the reveal of his friend Alastor who was actually Barty Crouch Junior in disguise. Strangely, the boy kept saying that it was just Pettigrew trying and failing to resurrect Voldemort, but Dumbledore knew that he did come back thanks to Severus, and went about telling Cornelius about it with the implication of Harry telling him so, knowing the cowardly man would not believe him and would insist that they were lying to get his job, and thus begin the smear campaign shortly after.
Dumbledore also used the opportunity to force the boy back into Privet Drive with wards and guards to ensure that he would stay there until Dumbledore let him out as punishment for his insubordination the past two years. He would have tried Sirius's home, but Amelia was already alerted about the annulment of the godparent ritual and the reasons behind it, and it would likely throw a red flag up if the boy was forced in with Sirius even if the man wanted to get back into the boy's life out of some mistaken emotion.
And that boy still managed to defy him with that interview! Combined that with Veritaserum, Pensieve memories and Amelia's original testimony, the boy had turned the tables on Dumbledore and made him the villain of the story, with Cornelius doubling his efforts to focus on him while trying to get back on Harry's good books, a futile effort given the newspaper through Cornelius having lambasted the boy on it.
Damn that boy! How did he even manage to get past the guards? It had to be Mundungus, that bloody thief could not be bothered to keep watch even if he was being paid by the hour! All he had to do was keep the boy in Privet Drive long enough for Dumbledore to force him back into Hogwarts before he could get away, and that stupid thief could not even manage that!
~ooOOoo~
His thoughts were broken when a patronus messenger came through the door and spoke in Nymphadora's voice. "Professor, Dementors have just entered Privet Drive, we need assistance!"
An attack on Harry? That might work in his favour, even though the boy was emancipated, Dumbledore had worked to maintain the Trace network around the area so that he could at least monitor the boy when he was able to force him back with the Dursleys. And with the latest upset, some from the Ministry might push to get the boy on charges, and he could swoop right in to save him with concessions to boot.
He should however make sure the boy was not kissed, he can't afford to have the boy die just yet.
Dumbledore took his time to prepare himself for the fight, he needed to make an entrance to impress on the boy for his safety. Then with a hand reaching out to Fawkes, he flamed away to the location, only to encounter the one person he was not expecting. "What?"
"Hello, Albus. How nice of you to drop in." Amelia's voice was the type one would allocate to a spider having caught a juicy fly in its web after long hours of patience. Behind her, Dumbledore saw Nymphadora Tonks, Mundungus Fletcher and Dedalius Diggle cuffed and waiting in one corner with their heads down and silenced, while another Auror was handling some paperwork before handing it to two others who apparated away with very angry faces.
"Amelia, I was told by Nymphadora about some Dementors attacking Mister Potter. If I may ask, where is Mister Potter and why is she arrested like a common criminal?" Amelia tilted her head at him in a manner that was rather rude in his opinion.
"In no definite order, she is arrested for working for a vigilante group that seems intent on keeping a young man in duress despite the restraining order involved. Secondly, the Dementors had been dealt with and we are currently dealing with the person who sent them here." Amelia answered firmly, with Dumbledore noting with a little unease a few of the Aurors surrounding the two of them.
"And Mister Potter? He should be living here." Amelia raised an eyebrow at him.
"Whatever gave you that impression?"
"For his safety, he should be living here to maintain the wards protecting his family." Dumbledore answered with a sinking feeling in his stomach.
"Yes, funny thing about that. He told me that you forced him here and got your order to keep him under watch to make sure he cannot leave. Said members include my Aurors who are apparently acting as your spies and illegally working to keep a boy imprisoned when he is already emancipated and considered an adult after taking his NEWTs." The glare from her monocle was quite damning. "Too bad for you, he was never here for that long, and he had granted me his memories of what you did, before leaving the country."
"What!" Dumbledore lost it at that point, making a couple of the Aurors behind him to raise their wands in preparation to help their boss.
"He was only here for one day before he left while bypassing your prison ward and your guards. He has been doing the interviews with me and showing all those wonderful memories for that article in Gringotts. So you and your little Order are going to be having some quality time in the DMLE cells along with the one who sent the Dementors here, and I intend to have my answers from you and likely Sirius Black since he was recently his godfather until he blundered that up with his attitude." Amelia offered one hand to him while her other hand held her wand. "Now hand over your wand and come quietly. Do not make more of a scene than you already have."
"Fawkes!" Dumbledore called out to his phoenix only for one Auror to fire off a spell that caused the phoenix to turn to stone and fall to the ground hard. That momentary distraction was enough to have Amelia and the others to disarm him of his primary wand, a secondary wand from his other sleeve, several portkeys, and other knick knacks, before he had cuffs slammed on to his wrists. Amelia looked almost predatory at his capture.
"Albus Dumbledore, you are under arrest for attempting to resist arrest and conspiracy to imprison an emancipated adult. We will add on more charges later. Take him away." Her Aurors did so with a fair bit of shoving for Dumbledore and Nymphadora, likely betrayed at the notion that one of their own was doing this.
This cannot be happening to him! Voldemort would win if he was not there to stop him!
Curse you Potter!
~ooOOoo~
(Undisclosed location)
"Ahcoo!"
"Bless you, Harry Potter Sir." Dobby did not stop his work of storing the globes of earth and stone into the expendable trunk nearby while speaking.
"Thanks, Dobby." Harry sniffed as he took a few steps away from where he was clearing out chunks of earth to check on the cloth he had around his mouth. "Ah darn it, I'm going to need to change this. The dust is clogging it up." Thinking on his feet while checking the time, Harry turned to Dobby and two other elves helping out. "Hey guys, let's take a break for the day. It is coming up to dinner. No Buts." He added seeing their expressions at the idea of resting. They left what appeared to be a tunnel they were excavating and went up a ladder to enter what was a better lit chamber that was sturdier and neater as well. Harry paused to get his wand to clean up when Dobby snapped his fingers to clean him up. "Thanks Dobby."
"No problem, Harry Potter Sir." The group moved on to a spiral staircase cut into the stone and moved upwards, with Harry pausing to place a rope by the wall to signify where the construction was being done. The group then stopped at a level that opened out to a corridor made of polished stone with some pictures and proper lighting at the top. Harry moved a few feet down the corridor before moving to the side entrance where a dining room was with the table being set up for the evening.
"Pop!" Another house elf appeared as he approached the table, arms crossed and giving him a glare. "What is the young master thinking he is doing?"
"Erm, coming for dinner?" Harry blinked.
"Nope, Young Master is dirty, go and wash up!" The female elf pointed a finger. For most purebloods, that would have been grounds for clothes or other forms of corporal punishments. For Harry, he just grumbled in good nature and moved out of the dining area to walk to his room. He could apparate there but he could use the walk to stretch his legs while checking on the other rooms in the facility he was building. He especially went to check on the two rooms that were meant to power the place he was in, one being a room housing a few blocks of etched stones that generate electricity mainly for the lights and some ventilation, and the other housing an old generator that could be used as a backup.
He arrived shortly at his room, a very big room that was 16 by 20 feet in dimension and painted mostly white except for the ceiling that had a light shade of blue for some colour. There was a long free standing stone table crafted out of one side of the room for his work, a large king size bed on the other side and a wardrobe built into the wall near the bed. A dome roof-light brought in natural lighting from above to reduce the need for electricity to light the room up in the daytime, and small potted plants helped to liven up the room along with a small window opening to what appeared to be a grass plain. Harry went to the ensuite bathroom built for his use, a decent 60 square foot bathroom that had a bathtub if he wanted to relax, a standard shower cubicle in one corner with a glass covering, a toilet near that, and a sink with a mirror on one side of the bathroom, but the selling point of this bathroom in his opinion was the window taking up one side of the room that opened up to a fantastic view of the bay with waves crashing against the rocks, the spray reaching to hit the windows from the action. The glass was heavily tempered and reinforced with runes to ensure they won't break during heavy storms.
Harry took a moment to appreciate the view before stripping and entering the shower cubicle to wash himself off. After making sure no speck of dirt or the scent of earth was on him, Harry put on a fresh set of clothes and returned to the dining room where the elves were waiting for him. "Young Master is here. We will begin dinner now!" With that claim, the table was soon groaning with delicious food that made Harry's stomach growl with anticipation. And he was willing to indulge his stomach for that matter.
"Thank you for the dinner, Winky." Harry took a bite of the fish dish in front of him and let out a contented sigh. "Damn, this is nice. My compliments to the chef." Winky blushed brightly at the praise from him and the other elves as they dug into the hearty meal.
"So how are we doing with progress?" Harry asked as he paused to try the salad.
"Tunnels are dug and the extra rooms are almost complete." Dobby took over for this. "The gardening room is also ready for us to plant different vegetables and maybe trees. But Pecky is wondering if we should make it bigger." Harry turned to the named elf on that bit.
"Pecky thinks we can plant fruit trees if Master Harry does not want to go outside." The elf with the gardener's cap answered his unspoken query. "We can make an outdoor farm but need to have a building to show it is a farm." Harry hummed as he took a sip of his drink.
"Depending on what you want to grow, I can make the garden room bigger or even create a separate space for larger scale farming, but if the items to be grown are going to be big, maybe a separate space topside might work better. Let me know what you want to grow so that we can discuss." Pecky nodded at that.
"Winky thinks we should continue eating, and not waste food." Winky raised a wooden spoon at that, with Harry and the others looking at each other nervously before doubling down to eat the food. As he watched the elves interact and laugh at something, his mind started wandering over all that had happened.
All of this would have been impossible if Harry did not go to Gringotts to get some money to get his books and to ask some questions on their services. He would not have known the true value of his worth to society, his legacy, the treachery that he barely avoided, and the machinations of the wizard he had briefly looked up to for aid to get away from the Dursleys. It took a fair amount of manoeuvring but Harry was finally getting away from the madhouse that was Hogwarts, the mess of the Triwizard Tournament and the smear campaign that came on because of Dumbledore's implication of him stating Voldemort's return despite him saying it was not so. Harry made sure to sic the lawyers on the old wizard for slander and misinterpretation of his words.
Oh, he did know about Voldemort's resurrection since he was forced into the ritual with his blood, but he also knew the boat that was British society. They could not decide whether he was their hero, an attention seeking brat, or an upcoming dark lord. That was why he was careful with the memory being shared and with the questions being asked, thankfully that was done right thanks to Amelia Bones. She herself had the feeling that the man was back and promised to do what she could on her end to get him away from the country, and possibly join him with her niece in the near future.
A refreshing and very different perspective compared to Sirius Black, the man who was an absolute disappointment.
"Young master?" Harry blinked at the voice interrupting his thoughts. "Is the dish not to your liking?" Winky looked very afraid of this.
"Oh no, the food is great. Just thinking about all that has happened so far." Harry went to reassure the female elf who perked up at that, reinforcing his thoughts that Crouch Senior was a fool to let her go and that anyone making her cry was due a major ass-whooping. It was thanks to her that he, Dobby and the other elves were able to hang on so long to create a home for themselves, and if the upcoming events were of any indication, others would be coming over for a long term visit.
Harry was done with a country that kept on taking everything from him or his family and merely giving him minor trinkets like he should be grateful for them. He was done with people who could not decide if he was their hero or villain, done with those who bring out like a trained monkey to perform for them before shoving him back into the cage that was the Dursleys.
No more.
He was looking out for himself and those he can genuinely call friends. And this place he was building was just one way of protecting them all from the war that was coming.
He could use a name once he got the place up to code, put the Fidelius up and be ready for guests.
Underhill Escape Resort? Not a bad ring to it.
