CHICAGO MED
In Kim's hospital room, Jay stood by her bedside. Despite her groggy state, Kim was alert enough to hold a conversation.
"Did you find Kent?" she asked with a weak voice.
Jay inhaled deeply, his shoulders dropping as he exhaled.
"We didn't, Kim," he replied softly.
Understanding the gravity of the situation, Kim simply nodded and settled back into the pillows.
Jay's phone pinged with a text from Erin.
He looked at Kim and said in a low voice, "I have to go now, get some rest."
Kim nodded, and Jay gave her a kiss on the head. "I love you," he said quietly.
Kim made a kissing gesture back at him, and Jay left the room with a smile.
As the door closed, Kim felt the medicine start to work, making her sleepy.
Jay left the hospital and hopped into his truck. He let out a sigh and headed for the precinct.
BULLPEN
Erin was waiting for Jay, who she had feelings for, to come up the stairs.
"About time! I was getting tired of Adam's chatter," Erin said with a laugh.
Adam pretended to be upset but just laughed along.
Erin looked at Jay seriously. "You left early, is everything alright?"
Jay just nodded with a smile. "Yeah, I went to check on Kim," he said.
Erin nodded back. She sensed there was more to it but didn't press further.
Is she doing alright?" Adam questioned.
Jay took a seat, confirming with a nod.
"Yes, she's deeply asleep. The nurse gave her some medication,"
Acknowledging with a nod, Adam's eyes fell to the floor.
CHICAGO MED
Kim was ready to leave the hospital after her last check-up.
"Everything looks good, you're free to go," said Connor with a smile.
Kim nodded and started to get dressed.
"I'll go get your discharge papers ready," Connor offered before leaving the room.
Kim grimaced a bit as she put on her leggings.
"Nice to see you're moving around," someone whispered.
Turning towards the door, Kim saw Pat standing there.
"What do you want, dad?" she asked him.
Pat crossed his arms and leaned against the door frame.
"Voight told me you were kidnapped. Why didn't you tell me?" he questioned.
Kim just kept packing her bag and replied quietly, "You never asked."
Pat let out a sigh and looked at the floor.
"I want to fix things, Kimberley, with you and your brother," he began.
Kim just scoffed and faced Pat.
"That ship has sailed, dad," she said softly.
Pat made his way to the bed and took a seat.
"Let me drive you home, at least?"
Kim shook her head, replying softly,
"I've got an Uber coming."
With a sigh, Pat rose to his feet.
"You're not taking an Uber home, Kim."
Her gaze met her father's as she retorted,
"Since when did you start caring about what I do?"
Slipping her bag over her shoulder, Kim stormed out of the room.
21ST DISTRICT
Platt was at her desk, sorting through papers.
"Kim!" Platt shouted.
With a sigh, Kim approached.
"What is it, Sarge?" she inquired.
Taking off her glasses, Platt leaned forward.
"Voight says you're on desk duty until you're fit for the field again."
Kim let out a frustrated sigh.
Desk duty is not what I need.
"But Dr. Rhodes said I'm good to go!" Kim protested.
Platt leaned back with a sigh.
"Can't help it, kiddo," Platt said apologetically.
Kim nodded and headed upstairs.
BULLPEN
The usual crowd of detectives and officers were busy around their desks.
"Hey, Baby!" Adam greeted with a smile.
Kim returned the smile, finding comfort in her husband's embrace.
"Yo! Burgess!" Kevin shouted out.
Erin gave a warm, sisterly hug while Jay stood by Hank's side.
"Jay, can we talk?" Kim asked.
Jay agreed and they moved to the break-room.
"What's going on?" Jay queried as the door closed behind them.
Kim began uneasily, "Dad showed up at Med…"
Anger flared in Jay's eyes. "What does he want now?"
Kim could only shrug. "He said he wants to make things right."
Jay snorted in disbelief and looked away.
Seeking solace, Kim wrapped her arms around Jay, whispering urgently,
"Just promise me he won't get near me or my child."
Jay nodded, sealing his promise with a kiss on her forehead.
SURVEILLANCE
In their respective vehicles, the intelligence unit was on the move. Jay settled into his truck alongside Voight, the air thick with unspoken tension.
Jay brought up Kent. "Where did you hide Kent's body?" he asked.
Voight's gaze met Jay's, his expression unreadable. "In a place that's not easily discovered…"
Jay's brow furrowed in confusion. "What does that mean?"
With a weary sigh, Voight turned to face Jay squarely. "Halstead, there's an appropriate time and place for these questions—this isn't it. Let's stay focused on our actual purpose here," he commanded, putting an end to the conversation.
Jay nodded and looked out the window.
"Sarge, I got Baker heading down fifth." Kevin's voice, crackling over the radio.
Hank pulled up his radio.
"Have you got eyes on him?"
"Negative, Sarge." Kevin sighed.
Erin noticed Baker coming towards her.
"I got Baker heading my way, I can box him in." Erin radioed.
"Got it. Ruzek, move in now!" Hank commanded.
"On it, boss!" Adam responded.
Erin successfully cornered Baker and took him into custody.
"Offender in custody." Erin radioed.
Erin walked Baker towards her truck and shoved him into the backseat.
"I got Baker, we're heading back to the district now." Erin radioed.
"Copy that." Kim radioed.
Erin started the engine and drove off.
ERIN AND JAY'S APARTMENT
Erin and Jay walked into the bedroom and Erin got into the bed.
"Night, babe." Erin whispered.
Jay smiled and replied back.
After Erin fell asleep, Jay lied down, wide awake.
Voight's words echoed in Jay's mind, which kept him up all night thinking.
"In a place which is not easily discovered,"
Jay threw back the blankets and made his way downstairs.
He slumped into the couch, selecting a guilty-pleasure show.
As Jay cradled his mug of coffee, he became engrossed in the movie's plot.
2 Hours later…
The credits rolled and Jay was making a fresh cup of coffee for the morning.
